Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time specific purpose position as a Research Assistant - Quantum Algorithms Scientist with the Irish Centre for High End Computing (ICHEC) at the University of Galway, Ireland. The position is available immediately, with flexibility to partly work from home in Ireland at our Dublin or Galway office.

Irish Centre for High-End Computing (ICHEC)

ICHEC is Ireland’s national centre for High-Performance Computing (HPC) providing digital infrastructure capabilities and expertise through R&D engagements and skills development programmes to academia, industry and public sector organisations.

With a highly ambitious leading-edge Strategy for 2021-2025, ICHEC provides infrastructure services and expertise in HPC and data intelligence to develop efficient platforms, solutions and services based on technologies including AI, high performance data analytics, Earth Observation, quantum computing and cybersecurity across several sectors including environmental sciences, healthcare, agriculture, energy, financial services and ICT.

ICHEC works in close partnership with a number of national and international researchers, enterprises and public authorities for joint R&D, skills development, and provisioning HPC and data services to accelerate their digital transformation and green transition.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work on current or future projects as a part of the ICHEC Quantum Computing Activity which is one of the leading Quantum Computing Programmes in Ireland and Europe, working in close collaboration with national and international research groups and enterprise partners in quantum computing technologies and its application.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • work in R&D projects focusing on quantum-enabled algorithms and software libraries;
  • work in close collaboration with external partners from research organisations and industry;
  • interact with other tasks and project partners to gather requirements, discuss design and implementation;
  • contribute to developing learning material and tutorials for training courses;
  • contribute to other quantum computing projects and skills development activities at ICHEC at national and European levels.
  • Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post.

This is a role for a highly motivated problem-solver, with a creative and analytical mind to build new solutions that will have a global impact.

Qualifications/Skills required: 

Essential Requirements: 

  • A Bachelors or Masters degree in a domain relevant to quantum information, quantum computing, quantum algorithms, or similar (including tutoring, teaching).
  • Experience with quantum algorithms: QFT, HHL, VQE, QAOA, Quantum Monte Carlo, Quantum Random Walks, machine learning, graph analytics, etc.
  • Experience in at least one quantum programming or software development toolkit/framework such as IBM Qiskit, Atos QLM, Intel-QS, Google Cirq, Xanadu Pennylane, or others.
  • Experience in at least one of the following languages: Python, C, C++, Julia, or similar.

Desirable Requirements: 

  • Experience with modelling and simulating physics-based systems, or quantum computer/simulator modelling or noise characterisation.
  • Experience with classical machine learning – deep learning, reinforcement learning, etc.
  • Knowledge of working on HPC systems, CI/CD pipeline and tools.
  • Exposure to Agile/PRINCE2 project management frameworks.

Salary : Research Assistant salary scale €30,025 - €39,908 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.  

The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the payscale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.

Demonstrates proficient use of computer hardware and software, telecommunication, and other office equipment and ability to navigate multiple systems simultaneously. Is accountable for ensuring accuracy and completeness through attention to detail.

  • Position requires high school diploma or G. E. D. with a minimum of two years’ experience in an administrative support role OR one-year degree/diploma in an administrative, business, or medical-related program with a minimum of one-year experience in an administrative support role, OR an associate’s degree in an administrative, business, or medical-related program. 
  • Administrative support role experience must include performance of responsibilities such as meeting management and calendar coordination, creating/transcribing correspondence/documents, and utilization of business-related software to produce databases, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.
  • Possess high-level skills in organization, customer service, professionalism, interpersonal relations, written and oral communication, and the ability to prioritize, frequently and quickly shift tasks, and adapt to a rapidly changing environment. 
  • Demonstrate effective and appropriate decision-making, judgment, and confidentiality as well as attention to detail and follow-through. 
  • Experience with coordination of travel and expense management.
  • Proficient application of English grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. 
  • Prefer work-related experience within the last ten years.

The position is available from 15 September 2023 to 15 November 2023 to support cardiovascular health-related clinical research studies. 

Job Description:  

This is a fixed term full time (1 FTE) position as a research assistant with the School of Medicine. The post is designed for clinical research and data management activities for cardiovascular health related clinical research studies. The research assistant post is available to support the portfolio of cardiovascular research studies under the leadership of Principal Investigator (PI) Professor Faisal Sharif, Consultant Cardiologist and Director of the Cardiovascular Research and Innovation (CVRI) Group, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Galway. 

The successful candidate (s) will be part of a multi-disciplinary team who engage with researchers and clinicians to support the portfolio of cardiovascular health- related clinical research activities. The research assistant(s) will work under the direction of the senior clinical research nurse but will have close interaction with the Director of the CVRI, Professor Faisal Sharif.  

Main Duties and Responsibilities:  

The post-holder(s) will:   

Assist the clinical research nursing team to conduct the research activities within the scope of the portfolio of cardiovascular research studies under the leadership of the PI. 

Coordinate and perform a variety of independent tasks and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation, and some interpretation of information.    

Coordinate the development of forms, questionnaires, and the application of qualitative and quantitative research techniques.   

Present information on research progress and outcomes to others responsible for the research project.  The Research Assistant will make use of standard research techniques and methods.    

Conduct literature and database searches and interpret and present the findings of the literature searches as appropriate.   

Write up results from clinical research activity (e.g. as project report) for review by PI, including conclusions and recommendations.    

Undertake a variety of independent research activities including data entry (e.g upload data to a study Electronic Data Capture (EDC), resolve EDC queries), statistical and qualitative analysis and write-up of results. 

Search, review, and summarize relevant literature for publications and reports as required; Assist in the writing up of papers for publication and ensure timely completion of all research activities. 

Record minutes of research meetings as required and circulate them to collaborators in a timely manner. 

Assist with other reasonable, research-related tasks as requested by the PI. 

Any other duties assigned commensurate to this level of post 

Essential Requirements: 

Level 8 Degree in a science or health-related field   

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills with attention to detail  

Capable of working collaboratively and effectively within a research team  

Evidence of capability of working independently and autonomously  

Excellent IT skills to include Word, Excel   

Highly motivated and passionate about developing high quality research.  

Desirable Requirements 

Experience of conducting quantitative research including producing literature review, data collection using questionnaires & scales, statistical data analysis, and writing-up to publication standard  

Experience in developing a search strategy, database searching & involvement in systematic reviews  

Proven track record of ability to meet deadlines, to initiate, plan, organise and deliver programmes of work  

Experience in conducting qualitative interviews  

Experience in qualitative analysis.

We have developed meaningful and strategic research alliances with economic, social and cultural partners in areas of regional and national importance. Informatics, Data Analytics, Physical and Computational Sciences Science

NUI Galway’s researchers in informatics use their world-wide network of partners to take part in global standardisation efforts and to improve the way people and businesses communicate and interact. Research also addresses the problems presented by vast data sets flowing from imaging activities that need significant computing power to reduce, analyse and visualize and further research looks at modelling and simulation, which are integral to almost all physical and biological sciences.

This research area covers environmental change and modelling, atmospheric studies, biodiversity and bioinformatics, marine science and law, and sustainable energy. Humanities at NUI Galway is a vibrant research rich area for scholarship and debate. Location  

Galway takes centre stage on Ireland’s western seaboard. A spectacularly beautiful county, it is a medley of contrasts - the wildest and remotest of countryside teamed with one of Europe’s most vibrant and popular cities.
