GRADUATE SCHOOL OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

The Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Kagoshima University was founded in April 2007, becoming the first independent clinical psychology graduate school at a Japanese university, with the aim of contributing to the psychological health of Japan’s citizens in the 21st century.

We have formulated a curriculum that integrates theory and practice, and we aim to cultivate clinical psychologists with a high level of professional expertise who can contribute to the strengthening of the education, welfare, healthcare, and judicial and correctional fields. Clinical psychology graduate schools are required to undergo certification assessment by the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists every five years. The Graduate School of Clinical Psychology, Kagoshima University passed certification assessment in both 2011 and 2016.

Our graduates are eligible to take the Clinical Psychologist Examination. Students who took the classes required for National Certified Psychologist as part of their undergraduate degree who then go on to take the required national certified psychologist preparatory classes at the Graduate School of Clinical Psychology are also eligible to take the National Certified Psychologist Examination.

Overview of the doctoral degree of the clinical psychology program

psychology phd in japan

Characteristics of this program

This program is one of few doctoral programs in Japan specializing in clinical psychology, and its objective is to train highly specialized professionals and independent researchers in fields related to psychology. In addition, this program has designed classes that allow working adults to earn a doctoral degree while continuing their professional activities.

Curriculum Characteristics and Methods for Taking Classes

The doctoral degree of the program trains researchers who are responsible for progress in academic research in clinical psychology. It also deepens the master’s course education in accordance with the goal of cultivating clinical psychologist leaders. To provide technical specialization, it has opened up six required classes for 12 credits and eight elective classes for 16 credits. To complete the course, a person must earn a total of eight classes for 16 credits from different subjects; they take six compulsory classes for 12 credits, and two elective classes for 4 credits.

Compulsory subjects The compulsory subjects consist of the following: “Clinical Psychology Research Methods I and II” to learn the clinical psychology research methodology,” “Clinical Psychology Evaluation and Interview Research I and II” to cultivate clinical research skills through case studies, and “Clinical Psychology Research I and II” that teach the required abilities for publishing research results or theses in journals.

Elective subjects There are eight elective classes offered for 16 credits; these courses cover basic research areas and on-site research. Thus, students will choose two classes from these that cover both areas. [Basic research area] Personality psychology research, developmental psychology research, abnormal psychology research [On-site research] Five classes on psychotherapy research (I-V) are being offered under the following titles: Play therapy, miniature garden therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, integrated psychotherapy, and supervision techniques

Research guidance When the students are initially admitted, they choose a research advisor from the professors who are in charge of advising research. During their first year, students take the abovementioned compulsory and elective classes based on the advice of the research advisor. They also conduct surveys and experimental research as necessary to write their thesis for graduation. During the middle of the latter half of their second year, students take a midterm examination. At the same time, they are required to submit their paper on an area of clinical psychology to an academic journal that publishes using a peer review process and have it accepted. If their work is acknowledged in the midterm examination, it becomes the draft of their thesis for submission. In their third year, the students continue their activities in clinical psychology while carefully working on the areas pointed out in their midterm examination and the reviewed draft. This leads them to complete their doctoral thesis. An oral examination on the thesis that was submitted is then conducted on a designated date.

To complete this course, a person must have acquired 16 course subjects stipulated by the program, received the necessary research guidance, and passed the review of their doctoral thesis. The individuals who have satisfied these requirements are awarded a doctorate degree (in psychology).

Department Features

The purpose of psychology is to explore the human mind with a scientific approach. To emphasize human dignity and help people live better lives, it is important to accurately grasp the function of one’s own mind, to observe the movements of others’ minds calmly and with care, and to reevaluate contemporary spiritual and social issues. We believe that the foundation for this is to reexamine the relationship between oneself and others by relativizing one’s own values and gaining a deeper understanding of others.

The Department of Psychology aims to cultivate the ability to explore and stay up to date with new knowledge of the “mind” and to nurture individuals with a comprehensive understanding of the human mind.

Certified Public Psychologist and Clinical Psychologist

psychology phd in japan

The Department of Psychology at Sophia University was the first of many universities in Japan to establish a Psychology Clinic and boasts a proven track record of producing a large number of professionals. The department also meets the standards for the national qualification of Certified Public Psychologist and the Foundation of the Japanese Certification Board for Clinical Psychologists’ qualification of Clinical Psychologist, and provides a rich learning environment for clinical practice and research.

Attractive Environment for Experimental Psychology

psychology phd in japan

The Department of Psychology is also characterized by its proactive education and research in basic psychology using experiments and surveys. In addition to social psychology and developmental psychology, the curriculum includes experiments using rats and measurement of higher brain functions using NIRS (optical topography), enabling students to approach the human mind from a wide range of perspectives.

The program is unique in that students can study both experimental psychology, which uses experiments and surveys to deepen their understanding of how the mind works based on scientific considerations, and clinical psychology, which seeks to understand the various difficulties and problems people face with their minds and how to help them.

In the first year, students learn statistics and data processing methods along with the history and ideological background of psychology. In the second year, they learn data collection, analysis, and interpretation, as well as the relationship between psychology and society, to acquire the foundation for conducting research and exercises. After attending lectures on a variety of specialized fields in the field of psychology, in the third year, students belong to a seminar that matches their interests and begin research. Students will conduct their graduation research on a theme of their own choosing, using the knowledge and data-analysis techniques they have cultivated up to that point.

* Please refer to the  syllabus  for more information on the courses.

As preparation for the specialized study of psychology, this course examines the origins of psychology and the interrelationships among the various fields, using historical transition as a point of reference. Students will not only acquire the basics, but also refine their own interest in psychology.

After understanding what scientific thinking is, students will review the nature of researching a topic, research methods and their characteristics in psychology. Students will then learn research methods experientially by organizing and analyzing data using the questionnaire survey method and writing a research paper.

Students are divided into groups to undertake practical psychological experiments, data collection and analysis. In addition, students will deepen their understanding of people in need of psychological support through role-playing and experiences as test subjects, assuming specific support situations.

Students will develop their literature search and presentation skills while considering their connection to society after studying psychology. Interviewing, one of the research methods, will be practiced through interviews with alumni.

Leading experts in various fields of psychology are invited to give in-depth lectures on their areas of expertise.

Research guidance will be provided to students for the writing of their graduation thesis. This may be done individually or in groups.

Overview of the School of Psychology

This program offers an outstanding curriculum for two qualifications: Certified Professional Psychologist and Certified Clinical Psychologist. (Further education in Graduate School is also required.) Our undergraduate school was founded in 2000 as the first school of psychology in Japan. We focus on the following four areas as the core elements of psychological research: experiment, application, clinical practice, and development. We have maintained facilities such as laboratories, data analysis labs, a reference room, and a counseling room. Our excellent off-campus, hands-on instruction includes practical training at support facilities and companies as well as the study abroad program in Australia. Students who have completed the correspondence courses in our affiliate schools are eligible for a teacher's license for elementary school or school for special-needs education.

Areas of Study

Experimental Psychology

Students learn the mechanisms of human perception, cognition, memory, and learning both theoretically and experimentally. They are expected to scientifically examine the human mind's information processing system, such as how we see, remember, and learn. For example, why films seem to move or how people remember and recall information.

Clinical Psychology

To support people's recovery from various mental and behavioral problems, students identify the underlying factors of psychological problems, acquaint themselves with theories on understanding personality, and acquire skills in psychological testing and counseling. These skills are the core elements that underpin interpersonal supports in healthcare, education, welfare, etc.

Applied Psychology

This area intends to provide solutions for human behavioral problems in industries and society. Not limited to social psychology and industrial-organizational psychology, students also learn traffic psychology, which is applied in driver aptitude tests and traffic accident prevention measures, as well as color psychology, which explores the relation between colors and human perception.

Developmental Psychology

This area investigates human development from birth to infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. This field is related to the human lifespan and is significantly affected by one's historical context, thereby requiring students to have broad perspectives and flexible ideas.

  • A Master’s degree from a clinical psychology school at a Japanese university is one path to this accreditation. You must be conversant in Japanese to get these degrees.
  • You must also be fluent in Japanese to work in this environment. If you are not Japanese, you will almost certainly face a language barrier as well as strong objections from a Japanese establishment to the fact that a non-Japanese person may work well as a non-Japanese person. Being a member of their team puts you in the quandary of figuring out how to get started in a position that provides malpractice insurance but necessitates difficult-to-obtain experience. While becoming a clinical psychologist in Japan demands clear and serious attention to one of the above-mentioned courses, there have been a few Western non-Japanese people who have conquered these obstacles over the years. So, while it is challenging, it is not impossible if you have sufficient language abilities and can locate the right mix of circumstances in Japan.

Is it possible to be a psychologist in Japan, as a foreigner?

Yes, that is feasible. Especially if you speak Japanese fluently. We once went to see a psychotherapist who was originally from America but had migrated to Japan. He specialized in treating foreigners and also worked extensively in collaboration with the JET Program, providing treatments to military people.

Living with no regrets: a journey through japan.

International Study Trip explores cultures, innovation and key industries

  • April 20, 2024
  • Alice Vega MBA 24

Alive Vega giving a peace sign in the streets of Tokyo

"You‘ll never regret going!"

That is what my family said as I contemplated traveling to Japan as part of my MBA experience. Studying abroad was a dream of mine. I missed the opportunity as an undergraduate at San Jose State University.

While researching business schools, I kept my eye out for study abroad courses. I found UC Davis Graduate School of Management to have a vast offering of global opportunities through their International Study Trip, International Exchange Program , and a summer session abroad at LUT University (Lappeenranta University of Technology) in Finland .

As a working professional, I found that the UC Davis MBA program’s International Study Trip to be the best choice as it only required a week away from work. The quarter-long course is led by a faculty advisor, who lectures on international business and the specifics of the targeted country. After nine weeks of studying and teamwork at UC Davis, the course culminates with a whirlwind tour of the selected country that offers firsthand exploration of how companies are impacted by global market dynamics.

Associate Professor Joseph Chen prepared us well for our trip, covering the economics of international trade, business etiquette, cultural norms, and navigating Japan.

In class, we researched and presented the businesses or organizations we would visit. We were expected to act as a resource during the tour.

On the Ground in Japan: Exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka

By mid-March, we were ready and excited to start the journey. I arranged to travel with my friend and classmate, Marissa Hernandez MBA 25. After taking off from San Francisco, we landed in Narita on the following day and made our way to Tokyo.

Upon arriving, Marissa and I settle naturally into our roles. She was our navigator and effortlessly traversed the complicated Japanese subway system. I, on the other hand, served as an interpreter who relied on Google Maps and Google Translate for help.

During our first leg of the trip, we went to Kyoto and Osaka. In Kyoto, we saw the Nishiki Market, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and Fushimi Inari Shrine. I found the Fushimi Inari Shrine to be my favorite site to visit. I was amazed by the shrine's size and the surrounding mountain scenery.

Alice Vega wearing a purple and pink kimono and holding a parasol

Upon our return to Tokyo, we settled into the Royal Park Hotel Shiodome in the Ginza District., Marissa and I started our morning with an immersive cultural experience at the Tokyo Maikoya Kimono Tea Ceremony. I was deeply grateful to experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony while adorned in an intricate purple and pink kimono.

Later we met up with our classmates for a tour hosted by Jordan Metzger, the Austral Group program manager, and Tsugue (Sue) Naga, the tour guide. Sue was an amazing resource as we toured the Imperial Palace Grounds, Asakusa Temple, and the Senso-ji Shrine.

Insights from Industry

We navigated the metro to the American Chamber of Commerce thanks in part to Yuri Takahashi, program coordinator. There, we met Executive Director Laura Younger . She brought us up to speed on how the American Chamber of Commerce supports U.S. business in Japan. Younger provided us with valuable career advice about networking and also emphasized the importance of volunteering as a means to gain skills and connect with people.

The following day we took a bus to Balanced Inc. , where we met Mike Eidlin , a 2014 UC Davis graduate, who founded the cannabidiol startup in Tokyo. According to Mike, Japanese consumers are curious about CBD products. Unlike in the states, he said CBD products are very niche. Mike's motivation and passion for startups was inspirational.

Our trip continued and we met Mayu Yoneyama , account manager at Cisco Systems Japan . Yoneyama recalled with fondness studying abroad at UC Davis in 2015. We learned that Duo, the authentication tool used by UC Davis, is a part of Cisco Systems.

On our last day,  we visited the Nissan Motor Corporation for their Yokohama Plant Tour. We took a well-organized tour of the showroom and engine assembly line.

After, we headed back to Tokyo to visit Bel Japon , part of the Bel Group, which makes quality cheese products. Upon our arrival, our host, HR Director Nisha Gordon, offered us Kiri cheese samples. Kiri is the local sweet and savory cheese brand popular with women. It was strange to try sweet cheeses. Everyone found the sweet cheese flavors of peach and yuzu lemon to be delicious. We were honored to have a Q&A session with Aytekin Yildiz , president of Bel Japon.

Memorable Moments: Reflections on Japan and Farewell to Tokyo

Our trip concluded with a farewell dinner at Nobu Toyko. As a group, we had grown much closer. We reminisced on the past week's events. Toasts were held for our gracious hosts Jordan and Yuri. It was bittersweet to hear about everyone's next adventures. We wrapped the trip in style with Karaoke at Big Echo.

The key takeaways from visiting Japan were timeliness, respectfulness, and politeness.

Overall, my highs were building friendships and my lows were not eating enough ramen! Going to Japan was a transformational experience!

I am extremely appreciative of the UC Davis MBA program for offering these opportunities. I'm thankful for my family's support without which I could not have gone.

My family was wrong though, I did have one regret after all—I wish I had taken advantage of more study abroad opportunities. See our International Study Trip: Japan 2024 Travel Itinerary

Assess Your Goals When Considering an Advanced Counseling and Psychology Degree

Completing your bachelor’s degree opens many new paths on your way to a career in counseling and psychology. With so many options, it’s important to assess your goals when selecting which program of study is the best fit. Consider your career aspirations, academic interests, and lifestyle needs as you embark on this journey toward finding an education that will set you up for success in this fascinating field.

Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota offers outstanding programs to help you earn an M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services  or a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology  degree. Below, we discuss several options for those looking to advance in their counseling and psychology education and career.

What Can I Do With an M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services?

A M.A. in Counseling and Psychological Services provides students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to become licensed practitioners, such as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). Licensed graduates can provide mental health services, including individual counseling, and work in a variety of healthcare and human service settings. This type of work requires patience, empathy, and compassion as well as technical expertise. Mental health counselors are labeled as a “bright outlook” job by the U.S. Department of Labor and are in high demand.

What Can I Do With a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology Degree

Pursuing a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology degree offers graduates the educational requirements and opportunity to make an impact as licensed psychologists. Licensed psychologists often work in clinical practice settings, such as community mental health centers or private practices, where they provide psychotherapeutic services to individuals or families. This type of work is both challenging and rewarding. It is also highly sought-after due to its potential for long-term growth and professional development opportunities.

Earning this degree can also open students up to a wide range of opportunities. Students gain many transferable skills that apply in different practice settings, including advocacy, consultation, critical thinking, and leadership.

University of Wyoming psychology graduate student Jaylan Aliev, of Boise, Idaho, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

As a second-year graduate student in the psychology and law Ph.D. program, Aliev’s research interests include juror perceptions of marginalized victims, how these perceptions affect legal decision-making and how to mitigate juror biases.

“Child sexual abuse is a national health crisis, and the process of seeking justice for victims can often be retraumatizing,” Aliev says. “Countless child sexual abuse narratives do not follow the popular culture prototype that suggests victims are young girls and perpetrators middle-aged men, and it is important to investigate how older or male victims of child sexual abuse are treated in the legal system -- and how such demographic factors may influence mock juror decision-making in these cases.”

Aliev’s current work examines the impact of victim physical maturity on legal decision-making in cases of child sexual abuse. Her secondary line of research focuses on analyzing racial, socioeconomic, geographic and policy disparities in the U.S. juvenile legal system.

“Receiving the news that I was a 2024 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship awardee felt like a dream,” she says. “I am a first-generation high school and college graduate, as well as first-generation American. My initial thought was, ‘Things like this don’t happen to people like me.’”

In May, Aliev will graduate with her master’s degree in psychology, and she looks forward to beginning her graduate fellowship research plans.

“As I have gained more experience working with community partners, I have become extremely interested in disseminating psycho-legal research in a way that informs public policy and aims to improve our current criminal legal system,” she says.

After earning her Ph.D., she hopes to continue her work at a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization as a researcher or data analyst.

“It still has not fully sunk in that my application was one of the 2,000 that was selected as a recipient out of tens of thousands of applications,” Aliev says. “I immediately started crying and then called my adviser, Kayla Burd (UW assistant professor of psychology), and my parents.”

To learn more about Aliev’s research, email her at [email protected] .
