Use this calculator if the numerators or denominators are very big integers.

3 over 8

Unlike adding and subtracting integers such as 2 and 8, fractions require a common denominator to undergo these operations. One method for finding a common denominator involves multiplying the numerators and denominators of all of the fractions involved by the product of the denominators of each fraction. Multiplying all of the denominators ensures that the new denominator is certain to be a multiple of each individual denominator. The numerators also need to be multiplied by the appropriate factors to preserve the value of the fraction as a whole. This is arguably the simplest way to ensure that the fractions have a common denominator. However, in most cases, the solutions to these equations will not appear in simplified form (the provided calculator computes the simplification automatically). Below is an example using this method.

This process can be used for any number of fractions. Just multiply the numerators and denominators of each fraction in the problem by the product of the denominators of all the other fractions (not including its own respective denominator) in the problem.

An alternative method for finding a common denominator is to determine the least common multiple (LCM) for the denominators, then add or subtract the numerators as one would an integer. Using the least common multiple can be more efficient and is more likely to result in a fraction in simplified form. In the example above, the denominators were 4, 6, and 2. The least common multiple is the first shared multiple of these three numbers.

The first multiple they all share is 12, so this is the least common multiple. To complete an addition (or subtraction) problem, multiply the numerators and denominators of each fraction in the problem by whatever value will make the denominators 12, then add the numerators.

Subtraction:

Fraction subtraction is essentially the same as fraction addition. A common denominator is required for the operation to occur. Refer to the addition section as well as the equations below for clarification.

Multiplication:

Multiplying fractions is fairly straightforward. Unlike adding and subtracting, it is not necessary to compute a common denominator in order to multiply fractions. Simply, the numerators and denominators of each fraction are multiplied, and the result forms a new numerator and denominator. If possible, the solution should be simplified. Refer to the equations below for clarification.

Simplification:

A fraction calculator is a free online tool that shows how to do mathematical operations on fractions. The Fraction Calculator speeds up the calculation process by highlighting the steps you need to take when performing arithmetic operations. This article will cover how to use this particular fraction calculator correctly, as well as the fundamentals of fractions, including their type, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as rules and examples.

A fraction reveals how many parts of a whole are available to you. You can recognize a fraction by a slash drawn between two numbers. The number on the left or in the upper part is called the "numerator." The number on the right or in the lower part is called the "denominator." For instance, \$\frac{2}{4}\$ is a fraction with two as the numerator and four as the denominator.

There are different types of fractions: proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed fractions, unit fractions, and complex fractions. Some fractions in relation to each other can be equivalent fractions, like fractions, and unlike fractions.

Input the fractions into the boxes that have been made available to you (formatted like \$\frac{4}{9}\$, \$\frac{25}{6}\$, or \$\frac{8}{3}\$).

There are various options of operators that you can select from. These operators include addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. You can also use an "of" operator when multiplying fractions. Choose the operator needed to solve the math problem.

After you have entered the fractions and selected the appropriate operator, the final thing to do is click on the "calculate" button to reveal the answer.

Problems this fraction calculator solves

This fraction solver saves you the time you would have spent manually performing the mathematical operation. The fraction calculator helps add, subtract, multiply, divide, and find a fraction of another fraction.

Below is a practical illustration of how the fraction calculator operates. For instance, you want to perform an addition operation with the following fractions: \$\frac{2}{6}\$ and \$\frac{1}{4}\$.

Let's begin with the fraction on the left side of the addition operator: \$\frac{2}{6}\$ (where 2 is the numerator and 6 is the denominator). Input 2 (numerator) in the numerator box provided and 6 (denominator) in the denominator box.

The fraction calculator provides two boxes on the operator selector's right side. The fraction on the right side of the addition operator is \$\frac{1}{4}\$ (where 1 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator). Input 1 (numerator) in the numerator box and 4 (denominator) in the denominator box.

After successfully entering the fractions and selecting the appropriate mathematical operator (in this case, addition), the fraction calculator will perform the calculation and display the output in the answer box.

You can also perform other math operations on this fraction calculator. All you have to do is select the operator that suits your intended procedure.

One interesting thing about this math fraction calculator is that it gives you a detailed explanation of how you can perform the operation without using the fraction calculator.

Performing mathematical operations on fractions without the use of a fraction calculator

Adding fractions.

Adding fractions that have the same denominator is relatively stress-free and straightforward. You have to sum up the numerators and retain the same denominator.

For example,

$$\frac{5}{9} + \frac{2}{9} = \frac{(5+2)}{9} = \frac{7}{9}$$

Unlike adding fractions with the same denominator, adding fractions with different denominators is more complicated. When adding fractions with different denominators, the first thing to do is to find a common denominator for both fractions.

You can achieve this by finding the lowest common multiple (LCM) of the two denominators. You can also multiply the denominators and break down the fraction later.

After you have gotten a common denominator for the fractions, you can then add the numerators.

$$\frac{4}{5} + \frac{3}{7} = \frac{(4×7)}{(5×7)} + \frac{(3×5)}{(7×5)} = \frac{28}{35} + \frac{15}{35} = \frac{(28+15)}{35} = \frac{43}{35} = 1{\frac{8}{35}}$$

One way to add two mixed fractions is to convert them into improper fractions and add them in the usual way. Another way is to add the whole numbers and the fractions separately and write the answer as the sum of the two.

The steps to take when subtracting fractions are similar to the actions you take when adding fractions. When the fractions are of the same denominator, you can proceed to subtract the numerators and retain the same denominator.

$$\frac{4}{5} – \frac{1}{5} = \frac{(4-1)}{5} = \frac{3}{5}$$

When solving problems that involve subtracting fractions with different denominators, repeat the same steps stated in the previous section. But this time, you will subtract the numerators instead of adding them. For example,

$$\frac{2}{5} – \frac{3}{10} = \frac{4}{10} – \frac{3}{10} = \frac{1}{10}$$

Multiplying fractions is straightforward. All that is required is to multiply both numerators together and multiply both denominators together. In some scenarios, you may have to simplify your result.

$$\frac{2}{3} × \frac{5}{6} = \frac{(2 × 5)}{(3 × 6)} = \frac{10}{18}$$

You can further simplify the example above into \$\frac{5}{9}\$ by dividing the numerator and the denominator by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF), which in this case is 2.

When faced with the problem of multiplying mixed fractions, always remember to convert the mixed fractions to improper fractions. Then you can multiply both numerators together and multiply both denominators together in the same way as mentioned above.

When diving fractions, you have to invert the fraction on the right side of the operator by swapping the numerator with the denominator. Doing this will cause the division operator to change to a multiplication operator. You can now proceed to multiply both numerators together and multiply both denominators together.

$$\frac{\frac{1}{2}}{\frac{4}{5}} = \frac{1}{2} × \frac{5}{4} = \frac{(1 × 5)}{(2 × 4)} = \frac{5}{8}$$

The process of finding the fraction of a fraction is the same as that of multiplying fractions.

$$\frac{2}{5}\ of\ \frac{4}{5} = \frac {(2 × 4)}{(5 × 5)} = \frac{8}{25}$$

Fractions Types

A fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator is a proper fraction. For example:

$$\frac{2}{3}, \frac{10}{20}, \frac{13}{57}$$

An improper fraction is a fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator. For example:

$$\frac{5}{2}, \frac{21}{10}, \frac{48}{12}$$

A mixed fraction is basically an improper fraction. It is a combination of a natural number and a fraction. For example:

$$2\frac{1}{2}, 3\frac{5}{14}, 17\frac{2}{7}$$

The fractions that have the same denominator are like fractions. For example:

$$\frac{1}{8}, \frac{2}{8}, \frac{5}{8}$$

Fractions that have different denominators are unlike fractions. For example:

$$\frac{1}{2}, \frac{3}{7}, \frac{7}{11}$$

If we can simplify fractions to make them equal, they are called equivalent fractions. For example:

$$\frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{6}, \frac{4}{12}$$

You can simplify all these fractions to \$\frac{1}{3}\$.

A complex fraction has a fraction in its numerator, denominator, or both. For example:

$$\frac{\frac{x+1}{x}}{\frac{x-2}{4}}$$

A fraction with 1 as its numerator and a whole number for the denominator is a unit fraction. For example:

$$\frac{1}{3}, \frac{1}{8}, \frac{1}{24}$$

What is a fraction?

A fraction is the result of a division of two whole numbers or in other words a mathematical representation of a number that expresses a part of a whole. It consists of two numbers separated by a horizontal or diagonal line (fraction bar), with one number above the line and one below. The number above the fraction bar is called the numerator, and the number below the fraction bar is called the denominator.

The numerator represents the number of equal parts or portions you have, and the denominator represents the total number of equal parts into which the whole is divided. Fractions are used to describe quantities that are not whole numbers and can represent values that are smaller or larger than one. The denominator can not be zero. If the numerator is smaller than the denominator, the fraction is located between 0 and 1.

How do I calculate fractions

To calculate fractions you will use a very simple and straightforward methodology, which will depend on the operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) you want to conduct. Each operation will have its own logic.

In simple terms, additions and subtractions require finding a common denominator , whereas multiplication and division operate directly numerators and denominators. More details about that in the paragraphs below.

How to add fractions?

Adding fractions is one of the most crucial and basic skills you will use when calculating fraction operations. Usually, you need to start with finding a common denominator, but often times you will use the following formula for fraction addition:

What are the steps for adding fractions?

  • Step 1: Identify the numerator and denominator for the first and second fraction
  • Step 2: Assume that a and b are the numerator and denominator of the first fraction, and c and d are the numerator and denominator of the second fraction
  • Step 3: Use the addition formula: The resulting fraction has ad + cb as the numerator, and bd as the denominator

Subtracting fractions is just derived by the sum of fractions: To subtract two fractions, you just multiply the second one by -1, and the add it to the first .

How to multiply fractions?

The second corner stone to conduct general fraction calculations is multiplying fractions. In this case, there is no need to find a common denominator, you will just multiply the numerators and denominators together:

What are the steps for multiplying fractions?

Similar to what happened with addition and subtraction, dividing fractions is just derived from the multiplication of fractions: To divide two fractions, you just multiply first one by the inverse fraction of the second one (the inverse fraction is obtained by swapping the numerator by the denominator in the fraction).

Decimal to fractions

You can convert any decimal to fraction using a simple trick. Some decimals will be easier to convert, specifically those that have a finite number of decimals. Periodic decimals can also be converted. These are the steps to follow:

  • Step 1: Identify the type of number you are working with, and identify if it has decimals digits or not. If D it has decimals, assess how many decimals it has
  • Step 2: If D does not have decimals, the conversion to fraction is direct, as we know \(D = \frac{D}{1}\)
  • Step 3: If D has a finite number of decimal digits, say it has k decimals. In case you multiply D by \(10^k\) to eliminate the decimals, and then you find that \(D = \frac{D \times 10^k}{10^k}\), and then you reduce the fraction as needed.
  • Step 4: If D has an infinite number of decimal, so it is periodic, you do the following trick: Multiply the number by a power of 10 that when doing 10D - D eliminates the periodicity, and then you get that 9D is a finite decimal, which you deal with using Step 3.

For example, you could ask what is 1.214285714 as a fraction, and we notice that D = 1.214285714 has 9 decimal digits. So we observe that

For a period number, say you have D = 2.349999999.... The periodic part starts that the third decimal digit position, so we multiply D by 100. We get that 100D = 234.999999....

Now, we subtract D from 100D we get \(100D - D = 234.999999.... - 2.349999 = 232.65\), which implies that \(99D = 2.3265\), which can be processed as follows:

Relationship Between Percentages and Fractions

As you probably suspect, percentages and fractions are tightly related. For example, a percentage of 80% is simple 0.80, which is a decimal, and using the steps above you can directly convert it into fraction.

Then, since decimals and fractions are so intimately related, a percentage calculator and a fraction calculator are also tightly related.

Why would care about computing fractions?

Fractions are one of the corner stones of algebra and of any general algebraic expression to calculate . Fractions are simple operands, but which can be compounded into more complicated terms using operations like sum, multiplication, etc., and then using functions we can construct even more advanced expressions.

The center of all algebraic calculator starts with the power of basic numbers of fractions.

Fractions

Example: Calculating the sum of fractions

Calculate the following: \(\frac{1}{3} + \frac{5}{4} - \frac{5}{6}\)

We need to calculate and simplify the following expression: \(\displaystyle \frac{1}{3}+\frac{5}{4}-\frac{5}{6}\).

The following calculation is obtained:

which concludes the calculation.

Example: Another fraction calculation

Calculate \( \left(\frac{2}{3} \times \frac{6}{5} \right)+ \frac{2}{5} \).

We need to calculate and simplify the following expression: \(\displaystyle \left(\frac{2}{3}\cdot\frac{6}{5}\right)+\frac{2}{5}\).

Other useful fraction calculators

Fraction calculations are crucial in Algebra. Other useful operations include simplifying a fraction by reducing to its lowest terms. Also, you can convert fraction to percentage or fraction to decimal , as those have an intimate connection.

Also, you may be interested in a mixed fraction calculator , depending on your learning setting. In more elementary settings, mixed numbers are treated as important entities, whereas in more advanced settings, mixed numbers are just presented in their fraction notation..
