The goal of the MIT Sloan PhD Program's admissions process is to select a small number of people who are most likely to successfully complete our rigorous and demanding program and then thrive in academic research careers. The admission selection process is highly competitive; we aim for a class size of nineteen students, admitted from a pool of hundreds of applicants.

Admissions for 2024 is closed. The next opportunity to apply will be for 2025 admission. The 2025 application will open in September 2024.

Students in good academic standing in our program receive a funding package that includes tuition, medical insurance, and a fellowship stipend and/or TA/RA salary. We also provide a new laptop computer and a conference travel/research budget.

Stern’s Ph.D. program in management prepares students to understand how organizations need to compete in challenging and volatile business environments and how managers must manage in complex and changing workplaces. The training is broad based and interdisciplinary, drawing on the fields of economics, psychology, and sociology. Areas of focus within the management doctoral program at Stern include strategy, the study of the competitive dynamics of firm performance; organizational behavior, the study of the behavior of individual employees and managers within organizations; and organization theory, the study of organizational structures and processes.

GMAT & GRE

All applicants are required to take either the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Submitted test scores are valid for no longer than five years. If you are applying for admission for fall 2024, you may submit scores from tests taken no earlier than January 5, 2019. There is no minimum test score requirement, and admissions committee does not have a preference in tests.

Submitted scores are valid for no longer than two years. If you are applying for admission for fall 2024, you may submit scores from tests taken no earlier than January 5, 2022. The committee prefers scores of at least 100 on the the TOEFL internet-based test and at least 7.5 on the IELTS test. Applicants are strongly encouraged to choose the TOEFL internet-based test when possible.

Applicants who applied last year are considered reapplicants. Those reapplying must submit a completely new application. The new application must include all required documents to be provided by the applicant - we will not re-use material previously submitted. Please note, Harvard University will accept no more than three applications from any one individual over the course of their lifetime. • Kellogg’s distinguished faculty includes trailblazing scholars whose research has redefined the study of management and has set a standard for new ideas and innovation. Currently there are 139 tenure-track, research-based faculty, of whom 68 hold endowed chairs. The faculty’s commitment to scholarly inquiry is evidenced by the school’s many research centers, as well as by sustained scholarly output. Their work is published in peer-reviewed journals , and many Kellogg professors serve in editorial positions at leading research journals.  The Kellogg faculty is deeply committed to PhD education. Within the past five years, over 60 different faculty have served on at least 3 PhD dissertation committees, and a phenomenal 26 faculty have chaired at least 2 committees!

If you are committed to pursuing an academic career and advancing your knowledge in the discipline of management, we welcome you to apply for your place in the IESE’s PhD program in Management.

Admission to the IESE PhD is contingent on first completing the Master in Research in Management or already being in possession of a postgraduate degree in research methodologies for business and management sciences.

Applications for the September 2025 intake will be accepted from September 2024 on. The first-round deadline will be then January 20, 2025, the second-round deadline will be April 20, 2025. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Your application needs to be completed online.

To be eligible for admission you should hold at least the equivalent of a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. A non-refundable application fee of $ 50 will be payable online.

2. Admissions pre-committee

Once a complete application is received at IESE (application online, three recommendation letters, GMAT, TOEFL, and photocopies of university transcripts and diplomas), the Admissions Committee will review the application and invite you to a personal interview, or notify you that your admission has been denied on this occasion.

3. Personal interview

If, after an initial review of the application, the Admissions Department decides to invite you to a personal interview, you will be notified in writing. Interviews will be held at the IESE campus in Barcelona. In the event that you are unable to travel to Barcelona, you will be asked to arrange your interviews with an IESE representative through videoconference or Skype.

4. Admissions Committee

Once the interview report is received at IESE, the Admissions Committee meets again to review the application as a whole in order to reach a final decision. Decisions will be sent by email. The Admissions Committee never communicates decisions over the telephone.

PhD in Management Tuition

The financial support package includes the annual tuition fees of € 30,000 for the MRM and € 5,000 for the PhD and a yearly stipend to cover living expenses of € 19,920 (gross amount). This aid is renewable upon satisfactory progress in the program for up to 5 years.

To qualify for financial support, students are required to work as research assistants for at least 10 hours a week from their second year onwards.

Fall 2025 applications will open in July

Submit your application through the Graduate Application website. Completed applications and all credentials, including letters of recommendation, must be received in the School of Management by  January 15  to be considered for admission. Applicants are encouraged to submit application materials in advance of the deadline date.

Note: Incomplete files will not be reviewed. It is expected that early applications will be complete within 30 days of original online submission but all applications should be complete by the deadline date.

Be sure to upload required documentation as instructed. When uploading materials to your application, upload them as PDF documents. Please be sure to remove password protection from all documents prior to uploading them. Do not mail or email materials, as they will be discarded.

Application Checklist

1. graduate management admission test (gmat) or graduate record examination (gre) is recommended, but not required.

Applicants to the School of Management’s PhD in Management program are not required to take the GMAT or GRE. If you wish to submit a GMAT or GRE score report, you may upload an unofficial score report with your application materials and send the official score reports to the university. For GMAT reporting, search the “University at Buffalo”. For GRE reporting, the institution reporting code is 2925. 

2. Recommendation letters

As part of the application process, you must supply the email addresses of two recommenders. They will receive an email asking them to submit a letter on your behalf, detailing how long they have known you, in what capacity, and your strengths and weaknesses. 

The best recommenders can comment on your academic and professional qualifications. Current and former professors and employers are desirable.

Recommendation letters must be uploaded as PDFs and received directly from the recommenders. Letters sent from applicants will not be considered valid. You will be notified by email when your recommenders have completed the process.

We must receive two letters of recommendation for your application to be considered complete. No exceptions.

3. Writing sample

Your writing sample should provide evidence of your ability to reason coherently and express yourself clearly. The sample presented must be in English , should not be co-authored and should not be more than five pages in length . A term paper or research project is ideal.

Your writing sample must be uploaded as a PDF . Be sure to include your full name identical to that used on the application site and indicate that the document is your writing sample.

Writing samples that do not meet ALL of these criteria will be rejected.

4. Statement of purpose

For your statement of purpose, tell us, in approximately 700 words, your reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree. This is not the same as your writing sample. Be sure to include your full name, identical to that used on the application site, and upload it as a PDF.

Submit a résumé showing relevant education and work experience. Include months and years of employment (i.e. MM/YY - MM/YY) along with telephone and email contact information for the two most recent workplaces shown on your résumé. Upload your résumé as a PDF and be sure to include your full name identical to that used on the application site.

6. Transcripts

Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded as a PDF for admissions review. Upload the front and back of transcripts (if back is blank, you do not need to upload the back). The site checklist has more than one line item for transcripts. If you only attended one undergraduate institution, you may ignore the second item. Transcripts for all undergraduate and graduate credits (including transfer credits) must be uploaded for admissions consideration.

For international transcripts, we will accept a transcript issued in English by the university. If the university does not provide the transcript in English, you must submit a copy of the transcript in your native language and an English translation. If you have attended an Indian university, you must upload transcripts, mark sheets and proof of degree.

If offered admission, you must submit an official, final transcript from every post-secondary institution attended to finalize admission.

Domestic applicants:

• Ask all colleges and universities you have attended to send official, transcripts in sealed university envelopes to the Office of Strategic Marketing and Enrollment Management, 150 Jacobs Management Center, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260.
• For students enrolling during the fall semester, official, final transcripts showing proof of degree attained must be received by August 1.
• For students enrolling during the spring semester, official, final transcripts showing proof of degree attained must be received no later than January 15.
• UB students may print their transcripts from the HUB system. The School of Management will not request transcripts for UB students.

7. Calculus requirement

A two-semester introductory calculus sequence covering topics in differential calculus, integral calculus, simple differential equations and basic matrix algebra is required to be accepted into the PhD program (example: Math 141 and 142 at the University at Buffalo).

Announcements, deadline extended to 29 january 2024, for doctoral programme admissions, ph.d. experiences, my two years journey at iim ahmedabad has been very rewarding. professors, here, are very knowledgeable and supportive. there are abundant research opportunities with hundreds of research seminars occurring every year. campus has excellent infrastructure including classes, sports facilities, hostels and the library is probably the best in india with plethora of resources. ph.d. office, library and administration staff is also very friendly and cooperative. apart from academics, there are plenty of avenues to explore cultural and sports interests..

What is Ph.D. Programme in Management?

Ph.D. Programme in Management at IIMA consists of 11 different areas of high levels of specialization of Management. What is the average completing time for the Ph.D. Programme in Management?

The average completion time is between four to five years.

Is it possible to complete the Ph.D. programme on a part-time basis?

No. However, a student may seek employment at the end of four and a half years with the concurrence of his / her thesis advisory committee and Ph.D. Programme Chair.

Who should apply? What are the typical backgrounds of Ph.D. students?

Ph.D. programme looks for highly motivated students interested in pursuing research careers in high levels of specialization requiring high scholastic aptitude. Typical students have varied backgrounds. Please follow the link to know about backgrounds of current students.

What are the qualities which IIMA is looking for in applicants to the program?

The Programme looks for highly motivated and disciplined candidates with strong academic preparation who exhibit curiosity, desire to learn, and have an inclination towards high levels of specialized research.

How will I sustain myself for 4-5 years, if I have a family?

IIMA provides sufficient fellowship (including fees, boarding, lodging and stipend) for five years to doctoral students. Please refer later section for details.

Does it help to have an MBA degree before entering the Ph.D. program?

Not really. From the first year itself the student takes Ph.D. level courses alongwith some PGP courses as recommended by his/her Academic Adviser. Hence, a student coming from non-management background is equally placed with those having a management background. Please check the area pages in the Ph.D. Prgramme in Management Brochure for specific requirements. For example, P&QM area encourages students who have a quantitative training from various disciplines to apply for their programme. Similarly, students with a background in Psychology may find the work done in the Organizational Behaviour useful.

How do I apply? What is the process of admission to the programme? Where can I get the forms? Can I apply online?

Application form can be filled-in online. Application fee of Rs. 500/- can be paid through IIMA payment gateway. Candidates have to attach copies of academic certificates/testimonials and qualifying examination score card along with the application. The qualifying exams are: Scores on standardized tests ( CAT / GATE / UGC JRF / GMAT / GRE / ICAR-SRF)

What are the important deadlines?

What is the purpose of the interview? What is expected at the interview for IIMA? Does it help if I come prepared with a research proposal?

The purpose of the interview is to gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for her/his chosen high level of specialized area in the programme. It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

The key stages are

1. First year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses and some recommended PGP course/s),

2. Second year coursework in area of high levels of specialization,

3. Area comprehensive examination,

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. Details are available in the Ph.D. Programme manual.

How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

What support is available for presenting research papers in indian and international conferences.

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

How do I find a job, after completing my Ph.D. studies?

Jobs depend on a student's competence and high level of specialization achieved during the programme. There are recruiters coming to the campus, faculty advisors provide references, and also through other informal/formal channels.

• Admission: The call for applications shall appear in second week of October / March every year. Please refer the IIT Delhi website periodically. An advertisement will appear in the Employment News as well. The department offers PhD programme in two streams: full time and part-time.
• Eligibility Criteria: Applicants are requested to check the eligibility criteria published in the latest Information Brochure given in the IIT Delhi website. IIT Delhi Home page - Admission - PG Admission.

          As per the IIT Delhi norms, the applicants are expected to fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

• Part-time candidates- Only employees of Public Sector Undertakings or Government Departments or Research and Development Organizations or Private Industries (approved by Faculty Boards) are eligible for admission to these programmes. Minimum qualification for these candidates is the same as for full-time candidates except that the requirement of qualifying in a national examination is waived off.
• Sponsored (full-time) candidates seeking admission to a Ph.D programme on the basis of study leave, must submit a “Sponsorship Certificate” on a proper letterhead from the appropriate authority in the organization clearly stating the following: For the period of his/her studies in the programme, the candidate would be treated as on duty with usual salary and allowances, and  That he/she will be fully relieved and granted study leave for a minimum period of 3 years ( 2years for M.Tech. and equivalent degree holders). You are required to submit a “No Objection Certificate” on a proper letterhead from the appropriate authority in the organization clearly stating the following: The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis; That his/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research; Facilities for research in the candidate’s field of research are available at the candidate’s place of work; and he/she will be fully relieved from duty and permitted to reside at the Institute for the period required residency (This is not a requirement for candidates who are working in NCR or in organizations located within a distance of 50 KMs from the Institute).
• Short listing Criteria: After receipt of the applications, the department shall apply additional criteria, also called as short listing criteria to select candidates to be called for a written test and personal interview at the department. These criteria are likely to change in every cycle and shall be published in the department website. The short listing criteria shall be published in the department website, at least two weeks before the interview date. Please see the short listing criteria used in the last cycle, July 2015, below.
• Written test & Personal Interview: The written test and personal interview shall be done on the same day. Both the test and interview will examine the candidates' communication skills - oral & written, academic disposition, aptitude for management research and research co-curricular activities. The test shall be for sixty minutes and of descriptive questions. Please do not ask for previous year exam papers as they could be completely different in every cycle.
• Results: The list of provisionally selected candidates shall be displayed in the department notice on the same day of the interview. The same information shall be uploaded in the department website the next day. 
• Programme Structure: The doctoral programme broadly consists of the following stages:
• Completion of Coursework Requirement - You are expected to complete certain number of credits / advanced level courses (Students with MTech / MBA / MPhil / Equivalent - 9 Credits; Students with BTech / Other Master's Degree - 18 credits) related to your area of research.A course of one credit means fourteen hours of classes, with one hour per week. Normally courses are of three credits. Your thesis supervisor shall advise the same.
• Comprehensive Written & Oral Exam - After completion of course work, you will need to clear comprehensive written & oral exam to undertake independent research.
• Presentation of Research Proposal - Presentation shall be done in front of a committee and the institute.
• Research work - Undertaking of research work as proposed.
• Presentation &Submission of Synopsis -Post research work, you will present the findings / contributions in front of a committee and the institute.
• Final Submission of the thesis - Submission of hardcopy of the thesis for internal and external evaluation.
• Thesis Defense - Open defense of thesis in front of the external examiner and the institute. 
• The presentation of research proposal should be completed within 18 months and 24 months from the date of registration for full-time and part-time doctoral students respectively.
• The student is allowed to submit his/her thesis when two articles are published in peer-reviewed journals (or accepted for publication in journal). The student is required to do original work and contribute to the body of knowledge in his/her respective area. The thesis submitted will be evaluated by two examiners (one within India and other outside India). Favorable comments and approvals from the examiners are mandatory for the students to defend his/her thesis publicly. 
• Programme Duration: The duration of the programme is 4 years with an option of finishing in 3 years. The maximum duration of the programme is 7 years.
• Classes: The classes shall be held as per the schedules announced by the department. The classes are held only in weekdays, Mon-Fri. and are conducted during the day and in the evening. There is no concession / exemption of part -time students from attending the classes. You may need to attend the classes during the day. If a course is of one credit, then you will have fourteen weeks of classes, with one hour class / week. The fourteen weeks shall be spread across the semester. The time table in terms of classes and exams are uniform for the MBA, PhD and UG programmes.
• Fee: Please refer the Information Brochure for details on the fees. In July 2015 cycle, the semester fee was INR 17835for General/OBC/PH and INR 12835 for SC/ST. The mess fees are extra.
