phd in behavioral economics in india

The Ashoka approach to Economics is fundamentally about bringing together cutting edge economic theory and rigorous data analysis to address questions at the frontiers of research. Our faculty members are engaged in active research in applied microeconomic theory, game theory, decision theory, development economics, labour economics, health economics, public economics, political economy, behavioural economics, experimental economics, economics of discrimination, macroeconomic theory, empirical macroeconomics, monetary economics, and international finance.

Programme Requirements

The first two years are primarily focused on coursework and developing a research plan. From the third year onwards, PhD candidates will present their work at seminars, and write up their research in the form of research papers that together form a draft PhD dissertation.

In the first year, students will focus on building a strong foundation. In the first year, students must take six courses: a year-long sequence of each of the three core courses: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics/Econometrics.

Monsoon Semester

  • Microeconomics I
  • Macroeconomics I

Spring Semester

  • Microeconomics II
  • Macroeconomics II Econometrics I

In order to meet the requirements for the PhD, students must maintain a minimum grade of B or 3.0/4.0 in these courses.

A first-year course requirement may be waived in specific circumstances, usually subject to passing a qualifying exam in a given subject, and with the permission of the PhD coordinator(s). However, students must ensure they take at least 6 courses in their first year by taking elective courses or PhD reading courses in lieu of any first-year core courses for which they get a waiver.

Appointment of faculty mentor(s)

Up to two faculty mentors will be appointed by the PhD Coordinator(s) of each individual department while taking into account (a) match between supervisor’s (and co-supervisor’s) specialization and area of proposed research, (b) student preference(s), and (c) number of students being supervised by individual faculty members. The mentors’ key role is to encourage and assist the students to find a faculty advisor, and to help the students navigate through the program requirements.

In the second year, students will develop their research interests by taking a total of three elective courses in their second year (across the monsoon and spring semesters). In order to meet the requirements for the PhD, students must maintain a minimum grade of B or 3.0/4.0 in these courses. In case students have already taken elective courses in their first year in lieu of core courses for which they have received waivers, they can take more elective courses in their second year, but they will not be required to take any more than 6 elective courses across both years.

The list of elective courses offered in any semester will be announced closer to the date. Amongst others, students can expect elective courses in the following areas: Advanced Game Theory, Advanced Macroeconomics, Behavioral Economics, Decision Theory, Development Economics, Economic and Social Networks, Experimental Economics, Health Economics, History of Economic Thought, Industrial Organization, International Economics, Public Economics, Political Economy, Time Series Analysis.

Students already holding an MPhil degree prior to admission at Ashoka University may apply to have the elective course requirements waived, and move directly to submitting a research plan.

Finding an Advisor

Students are strongly encouraged to find a potential advisor(s) within 1.5 years into the program, that is, after their third semester. This will ensure that the students have adequate guidance while writing the proposal for candidacy and will be able to submit it on time. The PhD mentors assigned to the students will facilitate them in finding the advisors.

Admission to Candidacy

To attain candidacy, students must submit a research proposal working towards the final dissertation. The deadline for the proposal is the beginning of their third year, that is, after the second year summer before the start of the Monsoon semester. The proposal should include a well developed research plan. The details of the proposal will be determined by the respective advisor and the Student Research Committee.

Students will then be called upon to orally defend their research plan before their Student Research Committee (SRC), specifically constituted for each PhD student. The Student Research Committee will be appointed by the Program Coordinator of the Department before the student plans to defend their Research Plan. It will be chaired by the student’s faculty advisor (must be a permanent faculty (tenured or non-tenured) of the Economics department at Ashoka University) and will include as members: (a) co-advisor, if any, and (b) at least one permanent faculty member (tenured or non-tenured) from Ashoka University Economics Department, and at least one external committee member who is from outside the department (may be from any other department within the university or outside the university) who specializes in a related area. Post candidacy, students can change the composition of the Student Research Committee after getting approval from the PhD coordinators and the Research office.

Students may apply to be formally admitted to PhD candidate status once they have completed their coursework requirements and successfully defended a research plan.

The university requires that an incoming PhD student holding a MPhil/MTech degree need to fulfill the candidacy requirements within 1.5 years.

Presentations

After candidacy, students are expected to present at least once every year in the Graduate Event which is annually organized by the Economics Department. Besides presenting at Ashoka, students are encouraged to present their research in seminars or conferences outside the university.

Research Committee review

Students who have been admitted to PhD candidate status must meet with their Student Research Committee (SRC) to review their progress once a year.

PhD Grad Event

The department, every year, will organize a PhD grad event which will consist of student presentations and faculty panels.

  • Student Presentations: The upper year PhD students who have been admitted to candidacy will present their work. The content of the presentation will be mutually decided by the student and the faculty advisor.
  • Faculty Panels: Besides student presentations, there will be faculty panels to guide the PhD students. This will provide the PhD students an opportunity to interact with faculty, exchange ideas, and in general prepare them to become a professional economist.

Dissertation defence

Once admitted to candidacy, students will write up their research in the form of research papers, which together form a draft PhD dissertation. Students will be required to subject the draft dissertation to a check for plagiarism using standard software.

Students will submit the dissertation to his/her SRC for its internal assessment. With the approval of the SRC, the dissertation will be submitted to at least two external examiners and to the Faculty supervisor(s) for their formal assessment and recommendation. On the independent recommendation of each external examiner, supervisor and co-supervisor, the SRC will formally conduct a viva voce examination in the presence of at least one, but preferably both, external examiners. The examination will be open to all faculty members and students from Ashoka University.

After the viva voce, a copy of the dissertation is deposited with the INFLIBNET, and with Ashoka University Library.

Students must submit their final dissertation within six years of the date of admission to the PhD Programme. Based on need or justification, an extension of up to 1 year may be recommended by the SRC, and granted by Dean (Graduate Programs).

Centre for Behavioral Economics (CBE)

Behavioral Economics offers realistic psychological foundations to economic decisions and can increase the explanatory power of economic theories. Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes were among the pioneers who discussed path breaking concepts in behavioral economics like lack of self-control, pain of loss, overconfidence. The subject regained its power after the Nobel Prize winners Daniel Kahneman, Amos Tversky and Richard Thaler empirically explained various anomalies in standard economic and finance theories with the help of psychology.

The insights of behavioral economics are assisting corporations across the world to improve employee productivity and hiring and promotion policies, increase efficiency of marketing and investment strategies. Similarly, Governmental bodies of various countries are introducing behavioural interventions and nudges to improve public policy outcomes in the context of tax compliance, retirement planning and charitable behavior.

Experimental Economics has offered unprecedented power to test human behavior in a controlled laboratory setting or in the field. Carefully designed experiments have contributed significantly to the advancement mainly in development and behavioural economics.

The Gokhale Institute Of Politics And Economics establishes the Centre for Behavioral Economics with the vision of teaching the subject in scientific way and conducting evidence-based behavioural research to transform society.

The Centre for Behavioral Economics aims to

  • Develop expertise in the subject among students, researchers and professionals
  • Develop research capacities to augment the subject knowledge
  • Inform and influence public policies

Message from the chairperson, the doctoral programme in management at iim ahmedabad (iima), one of the country's first doctoral programmes in management, remains the first choice for students interested in pursuing a career in management in india. iima aspires to be a leading school in management research. to that end, we seek researchers with the potential to become global knowledge creators and research leaders in methodology and practice. the emphasis is on knowledge creation and knowledge expansion. our doctoral students are expected to demonstrate independent research thinking by publishing in prestigious academic journals and giving scholarly presentations on their work. we encourage and support collaborative research with faculty from other universities. we encourage students to join academic, research, and professional networks as early in their careers as possible. the iima doctoral programme offers specializations in agriculture, economics, finance and accounting, human resource management, information systems, innovation and management in education, marketing, organizational behaviour, operations & decision sciences, public systems, and strategy. we strongly encourage multidisciplinary research. we have excellent research facilities, including a library with an impressive collection of management literature, journals, and databases. we provide high-performance computing capability, subject-specific research centres, fellowships, and financial assistance for research and conference attendance. if this excites you, we invite you to apply to the doctoral program and become a member of the iima community., diptesh ghosh chairperson, ph.d. programme, why ph.d. at iima.

Thinking of doing your Ph.D.? If you have outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity, discipline required for deep and meticulous research then the Ph.D. Programme at IIMA is where you should be. You will acquire a solid foundation within your discipline, exposure to new ideas, and mastery of the tools necessary to engage in research as you investigate in-depth today’s most challenging problems.

Vision of the Programme

The objective of the Ph.D. Programme in Management is to equip students with necessary skills to identify and carry out research on complex issues in a specialized field of management. The programme is strongly committed to preparing thought leaders, both for the academic and corporate world. Graduates of the Ph.D. Programme in Management are placed in world class organizations in teaching, research and consulting positions. A total of 422 doctoral students have graduated from IIMA so far.

The Ph.D. Programme in Management seeks candidates with outstanding academic credentials, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contributions that advance the frontiers of knowledge. It provides a diverse set of opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and research. The student opts for one of eleven functional/sectoral areas and acquires super specialized theoretical knowledge and mastery of practical aspects of the area.

The small class size allows close interaction with faculty members, who provide the intellectual stimulus and help develop the student's research interests and professional goals. Students generally spend a little over four years to complete their Ph.D. which includes two years of rigorous course work.

Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analyzing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced Ph.D. level courses in their areas of high levels of specialization. After completing the course work, students have to pass an area comprehensive examination to demonstrate that they have reached a level of proficiency in the area of high levels of specialization.  The Ph.D. dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines. Students admitted to the Ph.D. Programme receive a comprehensive fellowship that covers all costs and in addition provides a modest living allowance.

My experience with IIM A, till now, can be summarized in three words - rigour, learning, and development. The coursework is vast and intense. I would admit that the first year of coursework has helped me take a quantum leap into the world of academics. The faculty members are extremely supportive and patient. Additionally, there is ample scope, here, to pursue one’s extra-curricular interests. The community is very tightly knit and my batch profile is so diverse that the past one year was peppered with numerous instances of peer learning - academic as well as non-academic.

It also gives the candidate an opportunity to find out if the programme meets the requirements of the student. The student is not expected to have prepared any research proposal. In addition to interview, some of the Areas may conduct written test.

Does the programme accept international students?

Yes, the programme accepts international students. The eligibility requirements are the same as for domestic students. Please write to us specifically for details on the admission process and fees.

How selective is IIMA? What are my chances of getting admitted? How many students are admitted each year?

The selection process is very rigorous and involves four levels of screening and interviews. The number of seats are not fixed for the programme and depend upon the calibre of the applicant who goes through a fair and rigorous selection process.

Do you have an option of doing high level of specialized inter-disciplinary research?

Yes. You could specify this at the time of application. However, you will be housed in one area of specialization. You could take courses on highly specialized areas of study from a variety of areas and choose your thesis topic that cuts across disciplines.

Is the courses work at IIMA very difficult?

The institute expects high levels of specialized academic rigour and integrity. It has stringent requirements at specified stages of the programme, and there are fair and open processes to check that each student passes these at every stage of the programme. The candidates who are unable to meet these requirements are asked to leave the programme without any prejudice. The process of natural justice is followed in each such case.

What are the important stages in the Ph.D. program?

The key stages are

1. First year coursework (Ph.D. Programme Compulsory courses, Area Ph.D. Courses and some recommended PGP course/s),

2. Second year coursework in area of high levels of specialization,

3. Area comprehensive examination,

4. Thesis Proposal defense,

5. Thesis seminar,

6. Thesis defense

How much flexibility exists in the Ph.D. program? Can I change my area of research during my stay at IIMA?

IIMA Ph.D. programme offers a mix of flexibility and rigidity to the students. Students are allowed to change their chosen area of specialized work during the first year at IIMA, if they fulfil specified criteria. Specific deadlines for doing so are provided in the Ph.D. Programme Manual. IIMA offers high degree of flexibility in choosing areas of research. However a student is required to complete his/her area comprehensive exam by beginning of third year and thesis proposal defense within 9 months of the completion of area comprehensive examination. Details are available in the Ph.D. Programme manual.

How do I choose my research topic?

A research topic requires interest and motivation of student and availability of a suitable guide interested in the area of high level of specialization. Each Ph.D. student forms a Thesis Advisory Committee with whom the student has to work towards her/his thesis.

Are Ph.D. students required to teach?

What support is available for presenting research papers in indian and international conferences.

IIMA offers full support for attending up to 4 domestic conferences during the course of the programme. Competitive Travel Grants are available for attending international conferences as per the prevailing policy.

How do I find a job, after completing my Ph.D. studies?

Jobs depend on a student's competence and high level of specialization achieved during the programme. There are recruiters coming to the campus, faculty advisors provide references, and also through other informal/formal channels.

Gaurav Vohra

Co-founder & CEO,

Jigsaw Academy

We had contacted BEAST to help us better understand the primary drivers and motivations behind one of our key learning programs.

What impressed us the most was their ability to dive right into the project and quickly pick up on nuances, which they used to identify the correct research methodology and focus that on deriving the insights that we were looking for.

Their professionalism and the research experience gave us immense confidence, and we look forward to working with them again.

Diptarag Deb

National Manager - Family Banking, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank

9 months after we had initiated a big change in our sales approach and we wanted to understand the adoption rate and impact of these changes across the organization.

We invited the BEAST team to support us by giving insights on adoption and ideas to nudge the team in accelerating the desired behavioral change.

What impressed me was Karan’s ability to see the big picture quickly, gain a clear understanding of our needs, perform quality research, and generate effective behavioral insights and solutions.

BEAST is a young team of highly committed, focused and passionate professionals and it was a pleasure to work alongside them. Well done and look forward to working with you again!

Sushma Bharath

Head of Program & Marketing,

 Hero Vired

BEAST conducted a comprehensive and in depth market and consumer evaluation for our new venture into the ed tech space.

The research approach, execution, insight generation and solution design was commendable, and really contributed to the successful roll out of the venture. In addition, they have also been actively involved with us in conducting bespoke research for many of our new programs on different aspects -  outcomes, positioning, fit, communications.

I wish Karan and the team all the best and look forward to strengthening our partnership over time!

Naveed Zaheer,

Marketing Head,

Shri Educare Ltd.

Karan has a deep, working knowledge of how nudging elements influence business decisions.

His research and experience is extremely valuable to any business that is seeking to improve the method and science behind making customer decisions. His work represents a critical insight to consumer mindset and his inputs are valuable to implement both innovative and practical changes to decision systems resulting in better branding and customer conversion over time.

Shri Educare Ltd (SEL) has worked with BeastNudge on a couple of K-12 and Pre-School projects whereby the nudge elements have proved very effective.

Karan also has a strong grasp of this subject matter across many industries.

I would recommend BeastNudge Global to any business that is seeking valuable insight and consulting to help them get more value from their customer decisions.

Deborpita Nandi,

Program Manager, Corporate Units, Amdocs (India Division)

Karan Arora facilitated 4 sessions for the employees of Amdocs spread across 2021.

The sessions threw brilliant insights about behavioural economics, exploring our irrational decision-making choices, and becoming aware of our own impulsiveness in crisis, finances, productivity, and life choices in relation to personal gratification.

The sessions were fun, informative, with the right balance of theoretical understanding with nudges for application in daily life.

Karan’s expertise on the subject backed with data-based evidence made the program highly engaging and interactive for the attending employees.

Abstract The central implication of maximising behaviour amid competition is that rates of return tend toward equality. We test that implication in a market whose participants have the traits that behavioural economics suggests should make it hardest to find evidence of maximisation: the market for panhandling at Metrorail stations in Washington, DC. We find that stations with more panhandling opportunities attract more panhandlers and that cross-station differences in hourly panhandling receipts are statistically indistinguishable from zero. Panhandling rates of return thus tend toward equality. Extreme ‘behavioural’ traits do not prevent maximisation in this market.

Political Economy Inside the Strategy of Line Game

In today's world, the concept of the game and game theory is turned into new methods of knowing and understanding some of the human behaviours followed by society. In the 21st century, behavioural economics plays a major role in understanding the concept of the `line' game and hence the strategies followed by it. It is a country game played in many parts of India. It is a two-person game with very simple rules and moves. It can be played indoors. Students play the game during the break-outs. The game keenly and minutely determines the objectivity of the game and the behaviour of the players involved inside the game and the way one starts moving helps the other players to understand what one is trying to portray through the game whether it is winning or losing. The strategies involved can be put forth and looked upon from different perspectives. Referring to one such perspective, it can be looked at from a concept of Pareto efficiency, a microeconomic concept. It helps develop logical skills and learn winning strategies.

HOW BEHAVIOURAL ECONOMICS CAN SUPPORT SCHOOLS IN THEIR FUNCTION OF BUILDING CHILDREN’S SOCIAL CAPITAL – PROBLEMS OF IMPLEMENTATION

This text describes the difficulties in implementing those activities of the model which are directly aimed at children. Most of them are carried out at school, but require the cooperation of many institutions at the same time: a social welfare centre, school, library or museum. This is one of the challenges of implementation. Another difficulty is the development of mechanisms at school through which teachers will be able to recognise that a pupil's problems in learning or in his/her relations with peers are due to certain negative patterns at home, and as a result he/she cannot count on the kind of support that children of parents who are higher in the social structure receive. In other words, the measures designed are intended to support the school to the extent that it provides social capital to children from disadvantaged families. The very specific circumstances of testing the above-mentioned actions were not without significance. This coincided with the period of the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic, which challenged the school's discharge of its basic duties towards its pupils. It is worth noting here that the school of the time of the pandemic has even fewer tools for equalising opportunities for children than in normal times.

The Dutch “Digi Commissioner” (2014-2018)

The Dutch governmental digital infrastructure (Generic Digital Infrastructure; GDI) is a vital element of state functioning. This article investigates the governance of the GDI as exemplified by the activities of the Digi Commissioner (officially the ‘National Coordinator Digital Government’). In 2014 the Digi Commissioner was made responsible for coordinating and re-structuring GDI-governance. Early 2018 his tasks were transferred to the Ministry of Interior Affairs. Some progress was made, but according to the Digi Commissioner himself the GDI still leaves much to be desired and is far from future proof. The article will discuss the Dutch digital infrastructure by adopting several perspectives. First, by defining and describing the development of the GDI. Second, by analysing the activities and achievements of the Digi Commissioner. Third, by applying behavioural economics and securitization concepts offering relevant insights with regard to the (lack of) GDI-progress.

Conceptual Framework of Behavioural Economics

The main purpose of this paper is to systematize the characteristics of behavioural economics, and, on this basis, to highlight the differences between behavioural economics and neoclassical economics. Special emphasis is placed on the differences between the real and the rational economic man. Attention is focused on economic choice modelling under the influence of behavioural economics and the emergence of the so-called limited rationality. The paper also presents the methodological tools of behavioural economics, as well as the principles on which it is built as a modern branch of economic theory.

Lecture 10: rhetoric and behavioral economics.

Although behavioural economists are not rhetoricians, and rhetoricians are not behavioural economists, they are both interested in persuasion, even as they come at it from different points of view. Lecture 10 argues that behavioural economics examines our choice-making practices and considers how a range of influences works in concert with conventional economic interests to shape the procedures by which we come to decisions. These influences use rhetoric to nudge people to adopt particular beliefs, engage in specific behaviour, and endorse ideas believed to be in the public interest.

Discussion of citizen behavioural change using the nudge effect: a perspective based on social policy interventions.

PurposeThis study aims to present a communication model for promoting value co-creation between citizens and policymakers and to draw out proposals on the rationale in implementing nudge effect as well as key policy implications. The paper also revisits the close relationship between information senders and receivers (citizens) from the perspective of “citizen behaviour change” and focuses on the nudge effect, which strengthens the communication skills of policymakers (information senders) and accelerates the behaviour change of citizens (i.e. the recipients of information). Based on the study, the authors propose a conceptual framework to explain the spontaneous incentive structure of citizens.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a conceptual discussion based on a literature review. It examines the nudge effect on citizen behaviour based on information and communications models and theories. From critical discussions of literature, it proposes an analytical model that focuses on the nudge effect put forward in behavioural economics and takes into account the importance of measures to increase the sensitivity and empathy of the recipients of information.FindingsThe authors revisited the relationship between information senders and receivers from the perspective of citizen behavioural change and focus on the nudge effect, which strengthens the communication power of policymakers and accelerates the behavioural change of citizens (i.e. the recipients of information). According to the study, the authors propose a conceptual framework to explain citizens' spontaneous incentive structure. The dual perspective of policymakers and citizens should be central to the collaboration between citizens and policymakers to enhance the effectiveness of social policies, where the scope and type of value generated and the perspective of social value are essential.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper bridges the interdisciplinary research fields of behavioural economics and social policy. It is hoped that the model proposed in this paper will be an effective discussion framework for relevant researchers and practitioners when considering human resource training and system building related to information dissemination. In addition, it is hoped the model will be an effective tool for deepening discussions on topics that help to facilitate information transfer and communication within organisations.Practical implicationsThe realisation of policy intentions within the core elements of the social policy process, such as the definition of key objectives, policy mechanisms and legislation, are central elements of policy formation and are said to be highly similar across countries. The framework proposed in this study is a valid resource that can be applied in other countries and can be expected to act an effective guidepost for policy makers and other stakeholders engaged in social policy.Originality/valueUp to this point, in examinations of encouraging behavioural change in information recipients, attention has been focussed on the aspect of increasing the sender's ability to transmit information. Interventions, such as increasing the energy of the delivery, increasing the frequency and diversifying the media to make a strong impression on the receiver's consciousness, have been considered and implemented. However, this study suggests that, in addition to such efforts on the part of the sender, it is important to increase the sensitivity and affinity of the receiver to the message as preliminary preparation to receiving it.

PhD-in-Economics

A PhD in economics program typically takes five to seven years to finish. During this time, aspirants will take classes and research papers contributing to their dissertation. This dissertation is usually a written piece that answers a specific question or presents a new theory or way of looking at something which could be useful to other researchers.

An Overview of the PhD in Economics Degree

If you’re new to the field of PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in economics , you might be surprised to learn how many different paths are available for a career. In fact, there are a variety of sub-fields and specialties that can feel more like they belong in other disciplines.

  • Many people in the field focus on economic theory, where you look at existing economic models and try to improve them. For example, if a model has never considered the effects of climate change, an economist working in this area could create a model that does consider these effects and see how that changes the outcomes.
  • Other areas of specialization include quantitative methods (using mathematical tools like regression analysis to understand better what’s happening), econometrics (using data from other fields to test economic theories or answer different questions), development (studying developing countries and what causes their economies to grow), or policy evaluation (trying to determine which policies have the most positive effect on the economy).
  • Whatever path you choose, it’s important to remember that your career isn’t determined by your degree; any PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) will give you the tools you need to enter one of these fields, but it’s up to you whether or not you want to start exploring right away. Your goal is probably more relevant than your degree.
  • So what’s it like? Can someone studying PhD degree in economics have any life outside of it? What do you do with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in this subject?

Can someone studying economics have any life outside of it?

The first thing people think of when they hear the word Economics is money. The second is probably the economy, which is something that economists study.     The truth is, Most aspirants are business majors who chose to study PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in economics to help them understand the world in which they live better (and to help them get jobs in business).

Perspectives of a PhD in Economics In India:

What do you want to be when you grow up? If you’re a kid, your answer might be that you want to be a fireman or an astronaut. But what if your goal is to get an advanced degree and pursue a career in academia? What kind of job could you have after getting a PhD in Economics In India ?

In a nutshell, economists do research and teach. While the specific focus of their research may vary depending on their field of study, all PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in Economics will learn to apply the methods of economic reasoning to real-world problems. They’ll study how human behavior affects the economy and how government policies can affect the lives of real people. Because economics is a social science, there are different fields of specialization within the discipline.

But let’s say you want to teach other people what you’ve learned about economics . How does one get into academia? To earn an Economics PhD , students must complete coursework, write and defend a dissertation based on original research, pass oral exams in front of their peers and mentors, and teach classes.

PhD in Economics aspirants will get classroom experience teaching undergraduate courses while they’re earning their master’s degree. A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) student might also have opportunities to conduct independent research with professors or at other institutions through fellowships and assistantships.

What does a PhD in Economics Offer?

  • A PhD in economics offers an opportunity to learn about some of the most complex economic issues and create solutions for them, with the end goal being to make an impact on society. With this degree, you have the chance to move between many different fields—academia, government, nonprofits and the private sector—and you will be expected to apply your understanding of the economy to come up with innovative solutions.
  • The path toward a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) in economics is a long one, taking at least five years of graduate school. During this time, you will need to take part in both coursework and research.
  • Coursework will generally revolve around microeconomics topics (focusing on how individuals and firms make decisions) and macroeconomics (decisions made by governments or central banks). At the same time, research will be directed toward an area that interests you.
  • The most common paths include working with data or creating new ways to analyze economic phenomena. You may also choose to specialize in certain areas such as finance or labor economics.

What does a PhD in Economics In India consist?

The subject matter of a PhD in Economics In India covers the full range of human behavior under the lens of economic theory. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) admission program involves systematically studying one or more economic disciplines, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, financial economics, industrial organization, international trade and development economics.

  • A thesis – this is submitted at the end of the second year with an oral defense during which you present your research project to your supervisor, committee members from other departments at CUED (e.g., statistics or econometrics) and your peers.

Subjects of Research in a PhD in Economics In India

The subjects you study will depend on your personal interests and what you find interesting. It is also important to consider whether your studies will be relevant to the real world.

Subjects include:

Economics – this is the broadest subject, covering everything from microeconomics. (the study of individuals and firms) through to macroeconomics (the study of aggregate demand, supply and output). You might also want to do a research project on a particular topic in economics.

Tepper School of Business

Tepper School

Requirements

This program is rather flexible, allowing students to redefine their educational goals as their interests grow and change. The design of this Ph.D. program is based on a full-time commitment, including summers, and on the completion of the activities listed below.

The key requirements for completing the degree are:

  • Course work
  • First-Year and Second-Year Summer Research Paper
  • Qualifying Examination
  • Dissertation Proposal & Defense

Details on each of these, as well as additional information on degree policies, are below.

-Course Work-

12 semester-length Ph.D. courses, with at least four of these courses being methodology courses.  Students may use at most one independent study towards completion of the non-methodology coursework.  Courses must be completed by the end of the 5 th semester and only grades of B or better will be counted towards this requirement.  Students must also attend the SDS Ph.D seminar during their first year of residence in the program.

-Pre-Candidacy Research Papers-

During their first two years of study, students are required to write summer papers on an original research topic that interests them. The papers will normally be completed during the summer of their first and second years of the program.  Each paper needs to be approved by a three-person committee.  The second paper needs to be successfully defended to a quorum of faculty (a quorum consist of more non-committee members than committee members in attendance).  The papers must have co-chairs from Tepper and SDS (tenure-track or research-track).

-Qualifying Exams-

On the SDS side, students must pass the SDS "Psychology of Decision Making" (Judgment) and "Behavioral Economics " (Choice) qualifiers.  They are expected to do so at the end of their first summer, but they will have the option to retake a failed exam by the end of January in their second year.  This would replace the Advanced Economic Analysis exam normally required of Tepper students.

On the Tepper side, students will be required to pass the Microeconomics (Micro 1, 2, and 3) qualifiers and 2 out of the 3 Macroeconomics Qualifiers questions.  They are also expected to pass the Tepper qualifying exam in econometrics, or they may take the Heinz quantitative requirements course sequence and take a qualifying examination based on that course sequence.  Tepper qualifying exams are given in the second full week of January and should be taken no later than the student’s second year of study.

All qualifying exam procedures are subject to administrative adjustment according to standard University and College procedures.

Because the “Behavioral Economics” exam (also known as the “Choice” exam) and the “Psychology of Decision Making” exam (also called the “Judgment” exam) taken by students in the Behavioral Economics joint program are given outside of the standard early-January timeframe for all Tepper qualifying exams, the following policy is in effect for students in this area of study:

  •  Students will be given a one-month extension of the due dates associated with the Tepper 1 st and 2 nd   year papers for either of the above-referenced SDS exams taken during a summer in which one of these papers is due, when the exam is given in June .  This extension would thus make their paper draft due on August 31 and the final version due on September 30.
  • Students will be given a two-month extension of the due dates associated with the Tepper 1 st and 2 nd   year papers for either of the above-referenced SDS exams taken during a summer in which one of these papers is due, when the exam is given in July/ August .  This extension would thus make their paper draft due on September 30 and the final version due on October 31.
  • Students taking both exams in the same summer will be given a three-month extension of the above-mentioned deadlines, i.e., paper draft due October 31 and final version due November 30.

This extension structure would also apply in cases where qualifying exams need to be retaken.

-TA Requirements-

TA requirements depend on which program a student is admitted to.  Students admitted (and funded) through SDS must TA a semester-length course for SDS in each semester they are enrolled.  Students admitted and funded through Tepper must complete 14 units of TAing/Teaching for Tepper prior to graduation.  TAing is permitted only with special approval prior to the 4 th semester.  Students admitted through Tepper must also teach one Tepper course, typically during their 4 th summer. The course counts for 4 units towards the aforementioned Tepper TAing/Teaching requirement.

-Dissertation-

Students must successfully propose their dissertation by the end of the 7 th semester.  The proposal must meet the applicable rules of the admitting unit (Tepper or SDS).  The dissertation committee must have co-chairs from Tepper and SDS (tenure-track or research-track.)  With approval of the student’s dissertation co-chairs, a student may petition the chair of the PhD committee at Tepper and/or the Graduate Education Committee at SDS for a one-semester extension to this deadline.  Students must defend their dissertation by the end of the 7 th year.

-Review of Students-

Every spring semester, both SDS and Tepper will separately evaluate the students to determine their standing. Each unit can separately decide to keep or dismiss a student.  Both Tepper and SDS must approve to retain a student to remain in the joint program.  One department may decide to dismiss a student from the joint program.  In this case, the other unit can agree to retain the student but the student will no longer be in the joint program.  Both units may wish to dismiss the student, and in this case the student will be dismissed from CMU.

Creating a sustainable growth strategy for India

Date: friday 3 may, 18:00 - 19:30 venue: online and the old theatre, lse.

Lifting millions out of poverty in India requires rapid economic growth and energy use. At the same time, environmental pollution and climate change create significant barriers to success.

Understanding how to overcome both these challenges at the same time is one of the most important policy problems facing India. It is also a problem that confronts many other developing countries whose policymakers may look to India’s choices for guidance. Any solutions will require increasing support for innovative, applied research and building collaborative international networks of researchers interested in this problem.

The India Sustainable Growth Conference at LSE provides a forum for sharing ideas in this space, as well as inviting discussion and debate. Jointly organised by the International Growth Centre (IGC), LSE STICERD’s Economics of Environment and Energy Programme, University of Warwick and Indian Statistical Institute, the conference aims to bring together PhD students from across the world working on environmental economics, and leading faculty also working at the intersection of environment and economics in India, alongside policymakers in India. It follows on from LSE’s Environment Camp designed to provide PhD students from all fields of economics the opportunity to present new research on environmental issues.
