Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an international higher education better than studying at a domestic university.

The common notion is that foreign universities are expensive, although with scholarships this is an exaggerated issue. What many fail to consider are time and effort. Studying in an Indian college leads to a lower average salary than earned by our western counterparts. This salary sets the tone for all future promotions since companies often look at your previous salaries during compensation appraisals. Additionally, most senior positions tend to be scooped up by individuals who have an international outlook through global exposure.  Finally, studying in a foreign country is an incredible learning experience helping students get a better academic as well as soft skill development.

Why has Canada become such a popular destination for education?

Canada has been one of the market leaders in education for decades. However, what currently sets Maple Country apart is immigration. Canada is wholeheartedly inviting students to study in their universities to fill job vacancies that are always growing in the country. Students who study in Canada (especially a Master’s Degree) are practically assured of a Permanent Residency Visa.

Is a good entrance test score important for a scholarship?

A good score doesn’t automatically qualify a candidate for a scholarship, however, it is one of the primary factors that the admissions department looks for in a scholarship application. There are other attributes such as a candidate’s academics, extra-curricular, financial background, and application essays (SOPs).

How do I choose the right university for me?

We get this question a lot. Many candidates know which career path they want to take, but are at a loss for how to take that journey. Understanding the job role and the industry that you want to get into is the first step to picking the right university.

Where should i study abroad?

Carefully consider the immigration options of the country that the university that you are considering is in. This is more important when you intend to stay back in the country after the completion of your course.

Also, review the placement history of the university as well.

The first step is to list your preferences. By listing your preferences and strengths, describe your course of preference. Extensive research on the modules, software and its length for your preferred subject is necessary.

Table of Contents

Why Ph.D. After B.Tech?

Ph.d. after b.tech: how to apply, how to do ph.d. after b.tech.

  • Specializations

Documents Prerequisites

  • Important Points
  • Universities

It is known that the Master’s program can get very expensive. Usually, students interested in a research program enroll for the same, i.e., a Master’s program, later converting it to a Ph.D. But a direct admission to any of the well-known Ph.D. courses after a Bachelor’s degree is also an option, as a student can do it, provided when they work hard. There are specific criteria that the applicant needs to meet. Hence, you need to check for each university to apply for a Direct Ph.D. admission after a Bachelor’s, i.e., a B.Tech or a B.E program.

For directly joining Ph.D. after B.Tech, you have to follow the below mentioned steps:

  • First you have to crack the GATE examination.
  • Your B.Tech CGPA must be at least 8.0 out of 10.
  • You must have a good “SOP” (Study of Purpose) and a good “SOR”(Statement of Research).
  • Then you need to prepare for the interview calls of various Institutes like IITs, IISC and others
  • After clearing the interview, you can join your dream University as a direct PhD student.

Whenever you try building a profile for a Ph.D. application, having a Master’s is the key. In most current scenarios, work experience in the field of interest for at least a year or two is good. The student can carry out whatever research work they require in the relevant area while doing their Bachelor’s program.

  • Students can also learn how to work under their guides after graduation to show different experiences in research.
  • A paper publication that is otherwise called a technical paper presentation is in the form of seminars and other projects during your Bachelor’s program that you need to do, reflecting your aptitude and interest in research.
  • The final year project topic given to you at the end of the day can be selected as per your future research target.
  • There is also a particular concept of Majors and Minors that students do not know about.
  • It is better to choose your majors to try to make your profile stronger for a direct Ph.D. application.
  • Care should be taken to ensure that the coursework is covered in proper time and that the Bachelor’s program is equivalent to the corresponding program in the US.

Ph.D. Entrance Exams

There is usually an entrance exam, whether you go for a Ph.D. from IIT, IIM, or any other higher education institution, to qualify for a Ph.D. Here's a breakdown of some of the top Ph.D. entrance exams that you should be familiar with:

  • UGC Net Exam
  • CSIR-UGC NET exam
  • ARC Ph.D. Admission Test
  • DU Ph.D. Entrance Exam
  • IGNOU Ph.D. Entrance Exam

Ph.D. Specializations after B.Tech

Suppose you are currently prominent in the field of Mathematics and Finance. In that case, your chances of getting an admit for a Ph.D. in Quantitative Finance, which is otherwise called only Finance, can get better. Some of the Ph.D. specializations after B.Tech are:

  • Ph.D. in Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Fluid mechanics, Turbomachinery and Energy Fluid
  • Material, Mechanics, and Design
  • Ph.D. in Information Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Management and Manufacturing
  • Ph.D. in Graphene Technology
  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Robotics Engineering
  • Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence
  • Ph.D. in Computer Engineering

Apart from all of the points mentioned above in the paragraph, the essential factors you need to take care of while backing a profile are the documents you need to have that go along with your application.

  • A Statement of Purpose (SOP) might be required, and it must be well written. It should describe why you want to make it and your reason behind pursuing a Ph.D. and stuff like your area of interest, application, and contribution of the research you wish to carry out, how you see yourself progressing with the research work, etc.
  • An SOP can either make or break the deal for you. Your caliber and aptitude need to be exemplary in the SOP that you write.
  • The next set of essential documents that you need to have is Letters of Recommendation from professors. These should come from your guides or your mentors from your university. Your equation and the work that you do with the focus matter a lot here. Hence maintaining a healthy rapport with staff and the hard work you need to do are a must.

Therefore, applying for a Ph.D. after a Bachelor’s program without ever needing to do a Master’s program is entirely possible. It involves a lot of hard work from your side over 3 to 4 years of Undergraduate life, but it works in your favor at the end of the day.

Minimum Qualifications for admission to Full-time PhD Programmes

Table 1 defines the minimum qualifications required for admission to full-time Ph. D. programmes at IIT Delhi. Please note:

These are Institute minimum requirements and any Department/Centre/School operating through their DRC/CRC/SRC can specify higher short-listing criteria than what is specified here.

This table includes most of the degrees, but each DRC/CRC/SRC is free to specify the qualifications and disciplines acceptable for admission to their programmes.

Candidates in the final year of their programmes and who expect to complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the date of registration are also eligible to apply for admissions. For short-listing purposes, their performance until the preceding semester (preceding year if their programmes are year based) would be considered but their admission would be provisional, subject to their meeting the minimum eligibility criteria after their final qualifying examination results are announced. In any case, all admissions are provisional at first and it is confirmed only after all certificates and previous records are duly checked and verified, a process which may take a few weeks into the starting semester.

Table 1: Minimum Qualification for Admission to full-time PhD Programmes

Exemptions, relaxations and clarifications:.

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (S. No. 1 & 2 in Table 1) is relaxed from 60% to 55% (CGPA relaxed from 6.00 to 5.50).

For SC/ST/PwD category candidates , the minimum performance in the qualifying degree (Sr. No.3 in Table 1) is relaxed from 70% to 65% (CGPA relaxed from 7.00 to 6.50).

Qualifying degree performance is computed by aggregating performance over all the semesters/years of the qualifying degree, as per the credit or weightage system approved in the institution/ board where the degree has been completed.

Requirement of qualification in GATE / National Exam is waived for the following categories of applicants:

Currently registered students in Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) pursuing B.Tech./B.E./ Integrated M. Tech/ Integrated M.Sc. Programmes (or any other programme of minimum four year duration, admission to which is on the basis of JEE), who have completed 6 semesters or more, and have CGPA of 8.00 or above (on a 10 point scale). Such students must obtain a CGPA of 8.00 or above at the time of graduation, and before they formally register for the Ph.D. programme (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

Graduates of CFTIs (in the programmes marked under (i)) with a final graduation CGPA of more than 8.00 (80% aggregate marks, if marks are the primary mode of evaluation);

M.A or M.Sc. graduates from IITs with CGPA 8.00 or above.

For purposes of shortlisting, the primary method of evaluation (i.e., CGPA/CPI, or aggregate percentage, whichever is appropriate) followed by the institution where candidate has obtained his/her qualifying degree will be used by IIT Delhi for determining whether the candidate meets the final shortlisting requirements.

For assistantship purposes only (and not for qualification), candidates with M.B.B.S. qualification will be considered equivalent to M. Tech., for admission to Ph.D. programme in Centre for Biomedical Engineering;

For candidates with M.A. degree in English, a 5% relaxation in marks or 0.5 relaxation in CGPA may be permitted for admission to the Ph.D. programme in Humanities and Social Sciences;

Candidates holding an MBA degree are eligible for applying to the Ph.D. programme in the Department of Management Studies.

PhD after B.Tech or B.E.

Pursuing a PhD after completing a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree is becoming increasingly popular in India. With the rise in research and development (R&D) centres, research organisations, and technology companies in India, the demand for highly skilled research professionals is increasing rapidly. This has led to many engineering graduates considering pursuing a PhD after completing their engineering studies.

A PhD degree is considered the highest academic qualification and is highly valued in academia and industry. Pursuing a PhD in India after a B.Tech or B.E. degree allows one to specialise in a particular field, conduct cutting-edge research, and contribute to developing new knowledge. A PhD also offers an opportunity to work in academia as a professor, researcher, scientist or in industry as a research and development professional or a high-level executive.

The education system in India is divided into different levels: primary, secondary, higher secondary, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral. B.Tech and B.E. are undergraduate programs that offer a four-year degree in various engineering disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science engineering, civil engineering, and more. Doctoral programs are the highest level of education in India and are usually pursued after completing a postgraduate degree.

As we state that it is possible to pursue a PhD directly after BTech, it is essential to explain how. There are several universities that offer an integrated PhD program whereby you can combine your MS and PhD programs. The course duration will be 3-6 years. You should first choose your specialisation and identify the topic in which you want to pursue your Doctorate. The other method is to apply for a PhD directly after your BTech. You can consult your faculty members or supervisors for a direct recommendation. It is to be noted that you are expected to have thorough knowledge and prior experience in the field you wish to pursue your PhD in. It will be beneficial to have research papers or publications to boost your chances of getting admission. It is also good to have your BTech final year project aligned with the topic of your PhD research.

You can submit Letters Of Recommendation (LORs) to uplift your application. If you are proven to have at least a surface knowledge of the subject that is taught in the Master's program, it will make things easier for you. If you attach a distinguished Statement Of Purpose (SOP) with it, you are sure to get admission to your desired program.

If you are planning to pursue a PhD right after your BTech, it is essential that you have a good profile. Your application should stand out from the others, and it is always good to have a few years of work experience. After completing your BTech, you can work for a year or two or extend your work under your project guide. You can also choose to do an internship. All these will help uplift your application. PHD after B.Tech: Complete Guide 2023

PHD after B.Tech are for students who completed their undergraduate in Engineering and wish to continue their education directly with a doctoral program.

' data-srcset=

Are you a recent B.Tech graduate who is looking for the best way to further PHD after B.Tech ? A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) might be the perfect degree for you. Even if you do not have any prior research experience, it is possible to pursue a Ph.D., provided you meet the necessary criteria. But first, let’s take a closer look at the different types of Ph.D. options available after a B.Tech degree.

Post Graduate Degree Programs after BTech

Direct phd after b.tech, integrated phd after b.tech programs, course duration, phd course work, phd admissions.

  • Background & GPA Requirements

How to do a PHD after B.Tech in India?

Universities offering phd programs: abroad, do we need to write gate for phd, how much time it takes to complete phd in india, can we get phd without gate exam, can i proceed with phd without net.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has proposed revised norms for PhD admissions under the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020, according to which those holding four-year undergraduate degrees with a minimum CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 7.5 with 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme (after 4-year undergraduate degree) with at least 55% marks in aggregate will be eligible for admission to PhD programmes.

A BTech degree will give students a solid foundation in their field of study, but it’s important to note that this education does not necessarily qualify them for graduate school. In fact, many students need additional coursework or even an undergraduate research project before applying for graduate programs at universities or colleges around the world.

There are some exceptions to this rule: If your bachelor’s program required you to complete an intensive research project or thesis paper during your undergraduate studies, then you may already be eligible for acceptance into doctoral programs without needing additional coursework or research experience beforehand.

If you want to get a PhD after your B.Tech, then it is important to prepare for GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering). GATE scores are used by various institutes and research institutions to shortlist candidates for their PhD programs.

You can directly apply for a PhD after your B.Tech if you have a good GATE score. You can get a direct PhD by taking GATE subject exams, getting a good rank, applying for direct PhDs in various IITs and NITs, qualifying the interview process and getting selected.

Direct PhD courses are designed for students who have recently completed their undergraduate in Engineering or Technology and wish to continue their education directly with a doctoral program without having to obtain any additional qualifications or go through preparatory steps such as course work. Most direct PhD courses involve research-based curricula where students learn theory and application under the guidance of experienced academics and researchers in their chosen field of interest.

These programs allow you to take advantage of your previous studies in order to gain an edge on the competition, as well as giving you the opportunity to specialize in a specific area of study that interests you most.

Integrated PhD programs are a great way to transition from your undergraduate studies into doctoral studies seamlessly.

By allowing you to immerse yourself in doctoral studies right away, these programs give you the opportunity to experiment and research like never before, while also giving you the chance to network with other students and professionals in your field.

These types of programs can help aid your career development later on in life by providing valuable networking opportunities that can be hard to find elsewhere.

The minimum period of Ph.D. programme shall be two years, which excludes the course work and a maximum of six years. Extension beyond the above limits will be governed by the relevant clauses as stipulated in the statute/ordinance of the individual institution concerned but not beyond more than two years.

Getting an advanced degree can be a great way to advance your career, but if you are like many people, you may not have the right background knowledge or subject-specific qualifications. In this case, course work might be ideal in order to prepare yourself before embarking on research-oriented degrees such as a Doctoral program.

If you decide to go this route, you will learn comprehensive theoretical classes taught by experienced faculty members as well as more about current research trends within the chosen field of study. This could either be done on campus or online depending upon what setting is adopted by certain universities worldwide today.

Any student who wishes to pursue their PhD must first pass a National Eligibility Test (NET). The exam is conducted by the UGC, and it is open to all candidates regardless of their academic background. The test covers all subjects taught in universities across India.

The NET score determines whether or not a student can proceed with their PhD studies. The score is calculated based on the number of correct answers given by the candidate and his/her speed of answering questions. Once a student has passed the NET, he/she can register for admission at any university in India.

A total of 60% of seats available at each university are reserved for students who have passed the NET exam; the remaining 40% are reserved for students who have passed an entrance test at their own university or through a common entrance test. In case there are unfilled seats in either category, they will be filled by students from either category based on merit, with priority given to those who have already been admitted into the program.

Background & GPA Requirements

In order to be considered for admission to most programs of PhD after BTech, you have to have a strong background related to the specific intended field of study. Common requirements include familiarity with advanced mathematical concepts like algebra, calculus etc, economics, software proficiency, statistical tools amongst others. A strong score throughout all post-secondary qualifications is highly recommended. However, if you have a score belonging to the less than the recommended section, you can compensate it by stating the activities you undertook, assistantships, projects completed, languages learnt during that time etc.

International Tests like GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS etc. A huge majority of institutions as part of the application process for PhD after BTech either require or recommend submission of scores of various international tests such as GRE/GMAT/TOEFL/IELTS/PTE etc.

Letters of Recommendation/Statement of Purpose/Resume These form an essential supplementary part of an application that elaborates on the motivations and interests of candidates and how they are suitable for the program. Further, Letters of Recommendation/Statement of Purpose/Resume helps the admission

At least 8.0 CGPA out of 10.0 is mandatory for students belonging to Non Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). Whereas those who belong to CFTI may not be required to present a score in GATE or any other national level exam.

If you’re looking for a PhD program to study the sciences, there are many universities offering PhD programs around the world. This highlights leading academic institutions and research universities across the world that offer a wide range of programs for those wanting to pursue a PhD after BTech or their bachelor’s degree completion. Here is a list of major global research universities providing plentiful PhD programs in Science and Technology-related fields and specialisations.

Columbia University, USA

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA

Stanford University, USA

University of Illinois at Chicago, USA

University of Manchester, UK

University of Sussex, UK

Are you a recent B.Tech graduate who is looking for the best way to further your education? A Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) might be the perfect degree for you. Even if you do not have any prior research experience, it is possible to pursue a Ph.D., provided you meet the necessary criteria. But first, let’s take a closer look at the different types of Ph.D. options available after a B.Tech degree.

A Doctorate in Engineering (EngD) is another one-year program that consists of two semesters: one focused on research and one focused on teaching. Students can choose between two disciplines: mechanical engineering or chemical engineering (or related fields). However, these programs are offered exclusively by universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland; those interested in an EngD should note that they will not receive any teaching training unless they already hold an accredited teaching qualification or have previous experience in teaching at university level.

Writing a gate is an important part of the PhD process. It helps to assess a student’s research abilities, knowledge, and critical thinking skills. The gate also gives a clear indication if the student has sufficient preparation for writing their dissertation. Finally, it gives faculty and reviewers an idea of what topics and questions the student wants to pursue in their doctoral studies.

It typically takes 3 to 5 years to complete a PhD in India, depending on the field of study and the university. The typical educational requirements for a PhD are completing courses and qualifying exams, writing a dissertation, defending it within a viva voce, and attending an orientation & registration session.

It is possible to get a PhD without taking the GATE exam, but it will be much more difficult. It is much easier to get accepted into a PhD program if you have taken and passed GATE as it shows that you have a greater knowledge of the topic or field you are wanting to do research in. Without this, you may need to take more classes at a postgraduate level to show your depth of knowledge.

Pursuing a PhD without net is possible, but it will be far more challenging and may require some creative solutions. Without access to the internet, it will be difficult to keep up with current research in your chosen field or find resources for your dissertation.

Routes of applying for phd after btech.

  • How to Apply for a PhD Program after B.Tech or B.E.?

Eligibility for a PhD program after B.Tech. or B.E.

Documents required for a phd program after b. tech or b.e, frequently asked questions.

If you want to pursue PhD courses after BTech, you can follow two options: to apply directly for admission or via a recommendation by academic faculties. Although the former process has been discussed below in this section, the latter involves directly reaching out to your faculty members of the university department. Typically considered as an informal path, the method of direct recommendation can lead to an admission offer if the research interests align, the professor is impressed by your projects and is willing to recommend the candidate to the admissions department of a university. Many professors at elite institutions invite candidates through this method.

How to Apply for a PhD Program after B.Tech or B.E.?

Can we do PhD after B. Tech or B.E. programs? Many institutions offer integrated MS and PhD courses with extensive research-based curricula. They have tenures of three to six years on average. Some courses have tenures going up to even ten years as well. These programs also integrate professional exposure via projects, fellowships, and research assistantships. The first step in the application process is to explore different PhD programs and find your niche or topic that interests you and aligns with your B.Tech degree.

Those looking to apply to colleges offering PhD after B.Tech can choose direct recommendations from faculty members or adopt the conventional application route. The latter method involves approaching the supervisor directly through the mail via an application for recommendations. Follow up with the supervisors to know the status of your application. These may lead to offers of admission for PhD programs. However, the research field must be in sync with the program while the professor should be impressed by the candidate’s academic background and projects.

Getting into universities offering PhD after B.Tech requires prior specialization and coursework in disciplines like mathematics , natural sciences , physical sciences, and varied branches of engineering . Candidates should possess industry or professional experience along with a record of extra-curricular activities and research projects.

Most universities require solid academic credentials in the study area. Candidates are expected to be proficient in engineering principles, mathematical subjects such as calculus and algebra, and proficiency in software and analytical/statistical tools. They should have good undergraduate scores, projects, assistantships, and relevant experience. Some other requirements include the following:

  • Good GMAT / GRE scores.
  • Scores in English language proficiency tests like TOEFL or IELTS .
  • SOP (Statement of Purpose) and LORs (Letters of Recommendation) .
  • Many institutions require a research proposal from the candidate, outlining his/her research interests, specific areas of study, and so on.
  • Candidates may also get admission into PhD programs with double/triple majors in relevant academic/research fields.

Candidates should attach the following documents with their applications (varies across institutions) in most cases:

  • Well Written Academic transcripts
  • Score sheets of GRE /GMAT and IELTS /TOEFL
  • Proof of Funds (if required by the institution)
  • Research Proposal (if required)

Good academic credentials can help students get direct admission into Ph.D. programs after completing their B. Tech or B.E. degrees. They can also directly reach out to professors at university departments for recommendations, as mentioned. At the same time, they can pursue integrated/combined courses that help them complete their doctoral degrees over an extended time period. Subject selection plays a vital role in admissions.

Simultaneously, a track record of published papers, research projects, and other relevant experience is always recommended. A good statement of purpose also helps immensely in this regard.

Can I do a PhD directly after B.Tech?

Yes, it is possible to directly do a PhD after a B. Tech course. The first way out is to apply for an integrated or combined course that fuses both the master’s and PhD programs. The second way is to look for direct recommendations from professors and departments to pursue PhD programs at leading institutions. In India, for instance, PhDs can be done directly after B. Tech without requiring a Master’s degree.

Can we directly do PhD after B.E.?

Yes, a PhD course can be directly done after B.E. or B. Tech. You can look for direct PhD programs in this regard. You can apply for an integrated/combined course at some institutions, while others may allow direct admissions without a master’s degree. You can also get recommendations from professors, provided there is a convergence of research interests.

Is Gate compulsory for PhD?

No, Gate scores are not compulsory for admissions into PhD programs. Some colleges offer PhD admissions directly to B. Tech graduates with required academic and research credentials. Others offer combined or integrated MS and PhD courses. Gate scores are mandated only by a few institutions.

How many years does it take to do a PhD in India?

PhD courses require at least three years in India. This includes coursework and other related activities. The maximum duration for a PhD in India is six years. M. Phil courses require a year or two semesters in succession at least. The maximum duration is two years or four semesters in succession.
