Adding video to an OpenOffice Impress presentation (Shallow Thoughts)

Fri, 05 mar 2010, adding video to an openoffice impress presentation, (and how to convert mpeg video to animated gif), impress woes, inserting a movie, plan b: animated gif, the moment of truth.

Or just use HTML. The great irony of this whole story is that some of the other presenters used their own laptops, so I probably could have used my HTML version (which had none of these problems) had I asked. I will definitely remember that for the next Ignite! Meanwhile, I suppose it's good for me to try OO Impress every few years and remind myself why I avoid it the rest of the time.

OpenOffice Impress Review

Open PowerPoint files for free and create your own presentations

open office presentation supported video formats

  • Emporia State University

OpenOffice Impress is the free presentation software included in OpenOffice , which is an office suite that also has a word processor , spreadsheet program , and database software.

There are tons of great presentation making features in Impress, and it supports all the common file formats that other presentation programs use. It runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Automatic spell check as you type.

Intuitive interface.

Tons of basic and advanced features.

Doesn't require installation (there's a portable version).

The whole office suite must be downloaded just to use Impress.

Boring program interface; not the most user-friendly program.

Large setup file, so download may be slow.

Other office tools try to install alongside Impress.

Can't save to PPTX or POTX.

OpenOffice Impress Supported File Formats

Below are just some of the file formats supported by OpenOffice, specifically the ones that work with Impress. If you're using Impress as a replacement for PowerPoint, you'll be pleased to know it can open PPTX files.

Open Formats

PPTM , PPTX, POTM, POTX , PPT, PPS, POT, ODP, OTP, SXI, STI, SXD, CGM, UOP, UOF, ODG

Save Formats

PPT, POT, ODP, OTP, SXI, STI, SXD, UOP, ODG, as well as HTML, PDF, SWF, and image formats like JPG, GIF, SVG, TIF, PNG, RAS, BMP

As you can see, Impress can open PPTX files, but it can't save back to that same format. A free document converter can help if you need the file to exist in that format.

Our Thoughts on OpenOffice Impress

The wealth of features in Impress make it a great program for making presentations. Not only is it great for creating a new slideshow or editing an existing one, but it has all the bells and whistles you'd expect for presenting the file, too.

We especially like that you can use it in a portable form from something like a flash drive. However, we don't  like that you're required to download the whole suite just to use this one program. This means you're downloading and storing files that take up around several hundred megabytes of storage even if you only want to use the presentation software.

Similarly, if you download the installable version, you have to download the whole suite at once which might take a while to get if you have a slow internet connection. However, once you begin installing it, you're given the option to only add Impress to your computer if you don't want the other office tools.

We like that Impress can open such a large number of popular file formats. Some of the more common ones include those found in PowerPoint like POTM, POTX , and PPTM.

The interface isn't too hard to navigate through but we find WPS Office's Presentation program to be much easier, and it even includes many of the same tools and features.

Ask LibreOffice

What video formats does LibreOffice Impress support?

I had an mp4 video file that wouldn’t work. It said that the video was not compatible. I converted it to a Windows movie file, and it allowed me to put it in my presentation. When I viewed it in presentation mode however, it crashed my LibreOffice. I was wondering what formats are supported to avoid having to randomly convert to formats that I am not sure will work. Thank you for your help.

I am using 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium.

It depends on the installed codec support and what the platform-dependent multimedia frameworks (used by LibreOffice) support in the way of codecs:

  • On Windows , LibreOffice can open anything for which DirectShow filters are installed ( list of default formats ).
  • On Linux , LibreOffice uses gstreamer , so whatever you can play using gstreamer can be used with LibreOffice ( list of defined types ).
  • On Mac , it uses Quicktime ( list of media formats - Apple has now killed this link. Internet archive version here ).

LibreOffice by itself doesn’t support any media files (it could play WAVs directly, but that is of limited use, and not sure whether this is gone as well now).

LibreOffice relies on the operating system’s installed media support.

OP: @cloph . Minor edit to add links to the various pages listing the default media support and to clarify the initial sentence.

For increased compatibility across all operating systems where LibreOffice can be used, I would suggest using the Ogg Theora free, open format. This means anyone editing your Impress files will need to install such codecs under Windows and Mac OSX but under Gnu/Linux systems that format is always supported by default.

You can see list of supported video formats, when open the drop-down list of file types near the bottom of the Insert Movie and Sound dialog box. I have no problem with playing video of different formats in my LibreOffice Impress. I suggest you install last codec pack, for instance K-Lite Codec Pack .

on linux install package: libreoffice-avmedia-backend-gstreamer . This solve any problem!

Thanks a lot, this worked fine for my LinuxMint18!

That worked for me on Libreoffice 7.0 installed on Ubuntu 20.04. Thank you!

I installed the pack, but I didn’t seem to work. I installed the “mega” version.

It plays it if I am not in slideshow mode for some reason.

I think the video format is not the issue here. I’ve used varius formats in earlier versions without problems. But the latest LibreOffice 3.5 Impress version seems to crash when displaying movies of any format in presentation mode. I’ve already posted this earlier ( Impress crashes when playing movies ). My guess at the moment is that this is a bug in Impress which will be fixed hopefully soon.

I had similiar problem. And I saw that preferred java is Sun , so I installed openjdk-7-jre java package and it works well for now. And approximately 15 hd format videos are added to the presentation. And no crash. Next week I have a presentation and am preparing for it. I hope everything works well. By the way my OS is Linux. So I don’t know if it helps or not. But, I hope so.

Just adding experience: I have a .mov file (QuickTime).

On Ubuntu, I can play it directly in the mediaplayer. And also embed it in Impress.

On Win 7 (VM) I also can play it directly in the mediaplayer. But when trying to embed it, I get the error “unsupported format”. Though .mov files are available in the drop-down list of file types in the dialog.

Hello I have the same issue here… I created a presentation in Linux and embedded a few vorbis audio and video files. All plays well in Linux, the separate files play wel in Windows with the installed VLC media player and in WinAmp but when running Impress with that file no embedded sound or movie, they seem to have vanished from the .odp altogether and it is impossible to add the .ogg although they do show up when I start to embed. The .oga video file does NOT show up in the dialog box at all. This truly is a VERY bad bug in LibreOffice, this way I cannot possibly defend to anyone to ditch MSoffice for LibreOffice. The only way to see the full presentation is to use Linux… That is simply a bridge to far for most users.

Just tried: .wav works and .mp3 works… But NO free format…:-((

I have a presentation that runs in LibreOffice 3.6.3 Impress with Ubuntu Linux 10.04 and 12.04 but running the same presentation with LO 3.6.3 in W7_32 bit the embedded audio and video files do not play and even seems te have vanished form the file. They are Vorbis and Theora files and both play in WinAmp, IrfanView and VLC media player so this cannot be a codec issue! Trying to embed gives the “unsupported file” issue for .ogg and .oga is not shown in the dialog at all. So I will not be able to distribute it for having someone to install LO is one thing but installing Linux is definitely a bridge too far for most users, however hard I try to convince people… This simply MUST be fixed. Pity that I am not a programmer myself. Pjotr

Well, I now installed the K-Lite Codec pack and: Lo and behold, it works, my embedded .ogg and .ogv files play in LO in Windows as well. So just having VLC installed seems not to be the answer unless I forgot to add something during installation. The basic version was sufficient. Thanks Irishman!

open office presentation supported video formats

Insert and play a video file from your computer

Depending on the version of PowerPoint that you're using, you can insert an embedded video (the default behavior) or link to a video file stored on your computer.

Inserting an embedded video is convenient, but it increases the size of your presentation.

A linked video keeps your presentation file smaller, but links can break. We recommend storing presentations and linked videos in the same folder.

In the Insert Video dialog box, you choose between Insert (which means "Embed") or Link to File.

Supported video formats

We recommend that you use .mp4 files encoded with H.264 video (a.k.a. MPEG-4 AVC) and AAC audio.

For more details, see Video and audio file formats supported in PowerPoint .

Embed a video stored on your PC

In Normal view, click the slide that you want the video to be in.

On the Insert tab, click the arrow under Video , and then select This Device (or Video on My PC ).

In the Insert Video box, click the video that you want, and then click Insert .

Link to a video stored on your PC

To help prevent broken links, we recommend copying the video into the same folder as your presentation, and then linking to it there.

In Normal view, click the slide where you want the link to the video to be in.

In the Insert Video box, click the file that you want to link to, click the down arrow next to the Insert button, and then click Link to File .

Shows Insert Video dialog in PowerPoint

Newer versions of PowerPoint support the playback of video with multiple audio tracks. They also support closed captions and subtitles that are embedded in video files.  For more information, see Make your PowerPoint presentations accessible .

Find out where a linked video is stored

If there's already a video on a slide and you want to know where it's stored, go to File > Info . Under Optimize Media Compatibility , there will be information about all media files in the presentation—whether they are linked or embedded in the file.  If there are any linked videos, PowerPoint gives you a View Links hyperlink. Click it to open a dialog box that shows the storage location of any linked files.

YouTube video

If you want to insert a video on YouTube, switch to Insert or link to a video on YouTube .

Preview a video

When a video is selected on a slide, a toolbar appears below the video that has a play/pause button, a progress bar, incremental forward/backward buttons, a timer, and a volume control. Click the Play button at the left of that toolbar to preview the video.

The playback controls for a video on a PowerPoint slide

Play a video automatically or when clicked

By default, in Slide Show, the video plays as part of the click sequence.    That means that when you click anywhere on the slide to advance to the next step (or when you press the Spacebar, Right arrow key, or other key that advances to the next step) the video plays. This Start option is called In Click Sequence .

But if you prefer, you can make the video start automatically as soon as it appears onscreen, or make it play when it is clicked:

Select the video frame.

On the ribbon, on the Playback tab, open the Start list and choose the option you prefer:

The Playback options for a video from your PC are: In Click Sequence, Automatically, or When Clicked On

For more details about the options for playing the video in Slide Show, see Set the 'Play' options for a video .

To get the correct instructions, select the version of PowerPoint that you're using:

Insert a video stored on your computer

In Normal view, select the slide you'd like to add a video to.

On the Insert tab, click Video , then click Movie from File .

In the Choose a Movie dialog box, select the file you want to insert.

If you want to embed the video on the slide, simply click Insert .

If you want to put a link to the video on the slide, click Options at the lower left corner of the dialog box, and then select the Link to file box, and then click Insert .

Once you've added a video to your presentation, you can add effects and choose whether the video plays automatically or when it is clicked.

Tip:  You can play back video that has multiple audio tracks. Closed captions and subtitles that are embedded in video files are also supported.  For more information, see Make your PowerPoint presentations accessible .

Insert a video stored on your computer

Open a new or existing presentation in PowerPoint for the web.

Select Insert > Video > This Device .

Insert a video from PowerPoint Web screenshot one

Select the video you want and select  Open  to insert it in your slide.

Insert a video from PowerPoint Web screenshot two

After your video has been inserted and appears on the slide, you can move, resize, or apply shape effects to your video.

Insert a video from PowerPoint Web screenshot three

PowerPoint for the web supports insertion of video files up to 256 MB.

We recommend using .mp4 video file format for best presentations quality and experience. We also support the following file types: .mov, .wmv, .avi, .m4v, .mkv, .asf, .ts.

The speed at which videos from your computer or laptop are inserted is dependent on your network connection.
