Editor’s Note: We know that many of you are looking for help writing travel experience essays for school or simply writing about a trip for your friends or family. To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

You Can Do It: Turning Your Trip into a Great Travel Experience Essay

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

Vietnam My Next Holiday Destination Essay 200 Words

Vietnam may appear small on a map , yet this remarkable country contains lots of beauty that can fill an entire continent. Vietnam is a fascinating Southeast Asian country known for its great food, historical landmarks, stunning natural landscapes, friendly people , and fascinating culture.

Vietnam has become a regular tourist destination since the late 1990s . The greatest places to visit in Vietnam range from jagged mountains in the north to tropical beaches in the south , with a lot of history and culture in between. However , this country is still connected with a large sense of discovery, and it arises a question in every visitor’s mind whether or not it is safe to travel to Vietnam.

Recently I am planning to visit this place . After doing research on it I came to know that, Vietnam is a pleasant and secure destination. There is barely any crime because local people are very serene, non-violent, and nice. While terrorism is a threat in practically every country , Vietnam has been an outlier until recently. The only form of crime you are likely to experience is petty stealing. Pick-pocketing is possible in various tourist places and so in Vietnam.

Vietnam My Next Holiday Destination Essay 300 Words

Vietnam is located in South-East Asia’s Indochina Peninsula , bordered by Cambodia to the southwest, Laos to the northwest, and China to the north . It also borders Thailand to the west across the Gulf of Thailand, while its east coast leads onto the South China Sea, north of Malaysia , northwest of Indonesia, and west of the Philippines.

Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi, is in the north, while the country’s largest city , Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), is in the south. Vietnam is a pleasant and secure destination . There is barely any crime because local people are very serene, non-violent, and nice. While terrorism is a threat in practically every country, Vietnam has been an outlier until recently.

The only form of crime you are likely to experience is petty stealing . Pick-pocketing is possible in various tourist places. When I recently visited the Taj Mahal I was not concerned about my safety and so I am not in Vietnam.

For my next vacation, I am planning to visit Vietnam . I have also planned not to avoid Ha Long Bay. The widespread commercialization of this natural wonder may have made it into a bit of a cliche. For a good experience with a little less rush and activity, I am also planning to visit the adjacent Bai Tu Long Bay.

Vietnam My Next Holiday Destination Essay 500 Words

Stretching down the southeast coast of Asia, Vietnam is full of gorgeous emerald highlands, bustling cities, lush forests, laid-back river villages, and rich historical heritage . With so many experiences to be had, there are lots of ways to immerse yourself in this wonderful land.

Vietnam is enthralling . It is one of the most beautiful places that you will surely enjoy if in case you are planning to go. Few nations in the world can provide a broad spectrum of culture , history, and gorgeous landscapes, as well as opportunities to both explore and unwind, and Vietnam is one among them.

Recently I visited the Taj Mahal in India and now planning to go to Vietnam . I have done lots of research on it and would like to share it with you all.

About its land

Vietnam has an area and structure similar to Norway , extending about 1,025 miles (1,650 km) north to south and being about 30 miles (50 km) wide east to west at its narrowest point. It is bounded to the north by China, to the east and south by the South China Sea, to the southwest by the Gulf of Thailand (Gulf of Siam), and to the west by Cambodia and Laos. The capital, Hanoi, is located in the north, while Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) is located in the south.

Some of the experiences you should have in Vietnam as a traveler:

In central Vietnam, there is a series of caves to explore . Let me tell you that here, we’re not talking about little, uninteresting caves. We’re talking about the world’s largest cave which is Son Doong Cave. It was discovered in 1990 by a local Vietnamese peasant. This identical cave was rediscovered in 2009 by British caving experts. Son Doong Cave is so big that a jungle grows inside of it, and a 747 could fly through it. But getting here is not easy. However, Oxalis is the only tour organization that will take you on a four-day journey to explore this cave. They also provide shorter excursions to other caves in the vicinity.

Another place is Halong Bay. It is one of Vietnam’s most recognizable attractions . The bay’s emerald waters are dotted with towering limestone mountains. Two and three-day cruises are offered.

Vietnam’s cuisine is amazing. The cuisine varies from north to south , with different cities specializing in distinct cuisines. Sweet, sticky rice, turmeric fish bn cha (grilled pork and noodles), and fried dumplings are all popular dishes in Hanoi. We can dine on bĂĄnh m (Vietnamese baguette sandwich) or bĂĄnh tam b in Saigon (thick noodles with pork and coconut cream sauce). I will also try the Cao Lau in Hoi An and the Bn b Hue in Hue. And the Pho is great wherever I go!

During the Vietnam War , the Viet Cong used a vast network of tunnels known as the Cu Chi Tunnels. The strategies and procedures utilized by the Viet Cong to confound and baffle American forces are incredible. A visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels is an intensive history lesson that even children would enjoy.

Another part of Vietnam that needs to be discovered is Sapa , in the north, which is cool and misty. This is the location to go trekking across rice terraces and discover the hill-tribe villages.

I have also decided to visit Phu Quoc. It is a small tropical island closer to Cambodia than to mainland Vietnam. Vietnam has many gorgeous beaches , but this is the location to truly escape the hustle and bustle of the rest of the country. Phu Quoc is not entirely a tropical paradise. It’s worth it to spend the extra money to stay at one of the fancier resorts, where the beaches are larger, more attractive, and free of litter.

Vietnam My Next Holiday Destination Essay 800 Words

Vietnam is a long-time favorite for cultural and traveling holidays , and an exciting nation to discover. Many visitors begin their Vietnam vacation in one of the country’s bustling cities. I have also decided to visit this place on my vacation. After so much research I have decided to start in the north in the capital Hanoi — on the banks of the Red River with a mix of well-preserved temples , lively markets, and skyscrapers — before heading down south to Ho Chi Minh City, famous for its French colonial heritage and the historic Cu Chi Tunnels that were utilized during the Vietnam War.

Some dos and don’ts to follow in Vietnam:

Vietnamese people wear conservative clothing. Despite the heat, it’s best not to show off too much skin. When visiting pagodas, dress appropriately. Shoes are OK , and rarely will you have to remove them. If unsure, just follow what the natives do. Everyone should drink plenty of bottled water, especially when strolling about sightseeing. There’s no need to carry large bottles around with you; a vendor is never far away, and they’ll almost certainly find you before you find them. While visiting different places, Keep cash, credit cards, airline tickets, and other valuables in a secure location.

Bag snatchings, while still uncommon, are the most likely crime a visitor will encounter, and the likelihood increases dramatically if someone is showing a camera or a laptop in the wind . It is saith that one should not wear singlets, shorts, skirts or dresses, or revealing attire to temples or pagodas. Physical shows of affection between couples in public are frowned upon. That is why I may see couples holding hands but not hugging or kissing.

Some highlights of travel in Vietnam

Beaches in Vietnam

Vietnam has also become an increasingly popular beach vacation spot and for this, thanks to a top mix of family-friendly coastal resorts . Most of the nicest beaches are in the southern part of the country; Danang, right in the center, offers calm waters which make it an ideal site for kayaking while adjoining Hoi An’s city core is close to the famed An Bang beach. Further south, there’s Ninh Van Bay , a fantastic refuge only accessible by boat, and Nha Trang, a popular beach resort with 19 offshore islands that are only a 45-minute drive from Cam Ranh, another coastal city that’s home to the elegant and tranquil Fusion Resort Cam Ranh, Nha Trang.

Vietnam offers some of the most gloriously busy markets in South-East Asia. Tailor shops will produce pretty clothing in no time. I will find handicrafts such as bamboo items , lacquerware, ceramics, silk, and jewelry. Antiques are available, although they can be difficult to bring back to my country and also, especially for those who are from the UK due to customs issues. Except in state-run stores where prices are fixed, I can bargain with locals for the best deals.

Diving & snorkelling

Although the marine life in Vietnam is not as diverse as in other South-East Asian destinations such as Thailand or Malaysia, diving and snorkeling are nonetheless enjoyable. Nha Trang on the central coast is recognized as the country’s diving hub due to its gorgeous clear waters and various snorkeling opportunities in the South China Sea . Here I will have the chance to witness unusual species including frogfish and cowfish. Phu Quoc is regarded for having the best hard coral growth in Vietnam, and you can snorkel at Turtle Island off its northwestern coast, while the Con Dao Islands are the only snorkeling destination where you can observe sharks, rays, turtles, and sea cows.

Food and beverages

Vietnamese food is comparable to Chinese cuisine in that it includes a lot of noodles and rice, as well as seafood and fish from the coast. Fresh herbs and produce, such as basil and peppers, are used extensively in hotel cuisine and also in street food – locals serve tempting dishes such as pho , the pork noodle dish Cao Lau in Hoi An, and bot Chien.
