1. Answer any one of the following questions in about 40-60 words.

(a) The temperature in Leh was 9°C below zero while in Amritsar it was 1°C above zero. At the same time the temperature in Mount Abu was 2 °C . Represent the temperatures of these places on number line.

(b) A rectangular sheet of paper 44cm × 18cm is rolled along its length and a cylinder is formed. Find the volume of the cylinder.

2. Answer any one of the following questions in about 40-60 words.

(a) Diagonals of a quadrilaterals PQRS bisect each other. If ÐP = 40° determine ÐQ.

(b) Determine the ratio in which the line 3x + y – 9 = 0 divides the segment joining the points (1, 3) and (2,7)

3. Answer any one of the following questions in about 40-60 words.

(a) The length of a rectangle is 12 m more than twice the width. The area of the rectangle is 320 Square meter. Write an equation that can be used to find the length and width of the rectangle. Also find the dimensions of the rectangle.

(b) There are two rectangular paths in the middle of a park as shown in the adjoining figure. Find the area of the path, it is give that

AB = CD = 100m

AD = BC = 70 m

HE = SR = 5 m

4. Answer any one of the following questions in about 100-150 words.

(a) Kamla invested Rs. 8000 in a business. She would be paid interest at 5% per annum compounded annualy. Find (i) The amount credited against her name at the end of the second year.

(ii) The interest for the third year.

(b) If the bisector of an angle of a triangle bisects the opposite side, prove that the triangle is isosceles.

5. Answer any one of the following questions in about 100-150 words.

(a) If 6 times the 6th term of an A.P is equal to 9 times its 9th term, then show that its 15th term is zero.

(b) The angle of elevation of the top of a tower 30 m high from the foot of another tower in the same plane is 60°, and the angle of elevation of the top of the second tower from the foot of the first tower is 30°. Find the Distance between the two towers and also the height of the other tower.

6. Prepare any one project out of the given below:

(a) Conduct a survey of atleast 50 households from your locality/village, regarding population and family income.

(i) Present the data related to family members in tabular form mentioning frequencies.

(ii) Calculate the average family size. How many families are above the average family size?

(iii) Draw the Bar graph for top 10 earning families.

(b) Observe a cricket match to be held in the current year. Prepare a project report indicating comparison of performances of the two teams with respect to :

(i) data of individual scores. (ii) team-wise average score per over (iii) run rate of individual batsman who did batting (iv) run rate of individual bowler who did bowling (v) draw a bar graph displaying the 5 top scoring batsman of the winning team.

How I tackle an Open University Tutor Marked Assignment (TMA)

I’ve been studying with the Open University now for six years; the first three years studying at undergraduate level, and the past three years at postgraduate level. Over this time I have developed what I feel is quite a nice system for tackling the Tutor Marked Assignments (TMAs) that OU students regularly complete, so I thought that documenting this process could be helpful to others who are new to distance learning or still thinking about starting the journey.

General housekeeping

Tma template.

For my first ever TMA (back in 2009) I started by creating a generic document template using Word. I gave it a front page containing the module title and code, my name and personal identifier (PI), and the date that the assignment was last saved. I used page footers so that my name, PI, and the page number are at the bottom of each page.

I have used this basic template for every TMA and End of Module Assessment (EMA) since. Current count is 40 TMAs and 7 EMAs!

Tip 1: Check the assessment guide for your specific module to make sure you have included the correct information.

Tip 2: Remember this is a creative process. You can make the template look however you wish. You don’t need to copy someone else!

File storage and disaster recovery

I’m sure there is a quote somewhere that relates having a messy work area with having a messy mind. Personally I find this to be true, and having a nice logical directory structure means that I don’t have to waste time panicking over where I put “that important paper that I read four months ago”.

When I attended a bricks and mortar college it was handy to keep all of my coursework on a USB storage drive. That was until the drive died and I lost all of my work.

So now I use a combination of Dropbox and OneDrive to keep all of my important work backed up online and accessible across all of my devices. Whatever tech ecosystem you’re using (Apple, Android etc.), you will have a similar service available. I highly recommend making use of it.

Time management

I love to have visibility of a project because it helps me to sleep at night (most of the time).

As an engineer my tool of choice for this is typically a Gantt chart, although there are many other popular methods you can read about online. You don’t need any fancy or expensive software to do this; I just use a spreadsheet as in the example below.

I use them for everything: my overall degree progress, planning individual assignments, revising for exams, even when planning DIY jobs around the house.

Planning and developing a TMA

I’ll now describe the seven main stages that I use for planning and developing my TMAs.

1. Copy the TMA questions into your assignment document

There is nothing worse than staring at a blank page!

When you need to start a TMA, don’t procrastinate, just take your generic TMA template and start customising it for the assignment at hand. Start with the module title, assignment number and date.

Next I copy in the question headings (separated by page breaks) to give the document some structure. Microsoft Word has a “heading style” feature that you can apply to each of these headings which gives you a table of contents for free:

2. Calculate the word counts for each question

Here is a simple rule of thumb that has worked wonders for me over the years:

Take the word count that you have been given for a particular part of the TMA and divide it by the total number of marks that are available for that part. I’ll demonstrate with this example of a typical TMA question (note this is not an actual TMA question, as those are subject to copyright):

Using [the framework covered in Block 2], assess the extent to which it applies to your chosen organisation. There may be no exact match, of course, in which case you need to explain and justify why you draw such a conclusion. Your review should include: – The results of your analysis (20 marks) – A summary of your conclusions (15 marks) – Reflection on the use of this framework as an analytical technique (10 marks) (Guide length: 800 words)

So there are 45 marks available here, spread across 800 words. This suggests that we should be writing roughly 17 words per mark (800 words / 45 marks, rounded down).

Now we can scale this number up to get a rough guide to the word count for each part of the question:

Analysis: 340 words (17 word per mark * 20 marks) Conclusions: 255 words (17 words per mark * 15 marks) Reflection: 170 words (17 words per mark * 10 marks)

3. Estimate the number of topics to cover for each question

I love data. I’ll show you why.

During several of my past assignments I collected data on how many points I could make in a given word count, the number of paragraphs this consumed, and how long it took.

When I say “points” here, I mean points within the argument (not to be confused with the marks available). These points could be references to a particular concept or topic from the module material, or maybe a point based on my own experience of the subject.

I have used this knowledge to create a simple estimation spreadsheet. I plumb in the number of words required for a question, and out pop the relevant stats.

Bear in mind that this is a guideline only, albeit a very useful one. Also bear in mind that the data will vary for each student, and between different types of module.

As with all types of estimation, you should continually check how accurate your estimations are and correct the process if necessary.

4. Develop skeleton answers

Once I know roughly how many points I need to make in an answer, I then create a list of candidate things to talk about (i.e. a skeleton answer).

I find that I don’t need to be sitting at my laptop to do this; inspiration for the logical structure usually hits me when my mind is on other things (e.g. sleeping, in the shower, or driving). So be prepared to quickly write down the list wherever you are.

It is important to cover enough concepts from the module material to demonstrate that you have actually read it (and thought about it), but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to cover everything that you have read.

Also don’t feel that your list has to have exactly the same number of points / topics that were estimated earlier. Remember it’s all just a guide at this point, I never know exactly how deep I will go on each topic before I actually start writing.

5. Flesh out the skeleton using a throw-up

Often I will put the skeleton aside for a few days and let my subconscious work on the TMA for me. Again, the inspiration from this process can hit you at any time, so be prepared to capture it.

At this point I use what I call a throw-up (some people call it a brain dump). This involves letting my thoughts flow through my fingers onto the keyboard, fleshing out the bones of the skeleton.

The aim is to get the full flow of thought out quickly without analysing. Don’t stop to reword sentences or correct typos, you will lose the flow. For this reason I just use plain old Microsoft Notepad because it comes with no distractions.

6. Create the first draft

To create what I consider to be the first draft I copy the throw-up into a word processor, chop it up, change some parts around, and do minor rework of others.

At this point you can get a good feel for whether you are on the right track. It’s pretty obvious if some sections (or the entire document) have not met the suggested word count.

I will also make sure that all points in the questions have been answered and that all references have been cited correctly.

7. Iterate to perfection

It now becomes an iterative process of tidying up the document so that it reads as a coherent piece.

1. Copy the TMA questions into your assignment 2. Calculate the word counts for each question 3. Estimate the number of topics to cover for each question 4. Develop skeleton answers 5. Flesh out the skeleton using a throw-up 6. Create the first draft 7. Iterate to perfection

Try to have fun!

We wouldn’t typically read an academic paper for fun; often they are far too dry. There have been rare occasions however where an author has brought some personality and flair into the writing, for example relating the subject at hand to wider world events and historical context.

After several years of being an OU student I’m only just reaching the point where I am confident enough to try to start emulating this myself. It’s definitely a tricky balance to achieve, but this wouldn’t be a very useful learning process if it was easy now would it ☺.

Hi David just found your blog, i am really struggling with the open university i have now failed 2 assignments and feel my tutor isn’t giving me enough credit, i am trying so hard i even have a one to tutor and even he is not sure on what exactly my tutor wants from me. I have DSA needs also, and my tutor really doesn’t seem to be very sympathetic to my needs. Wondered if there is a simplistic way of navigating what is needed from me before i loose the will to live, and probably just give up as really am struggling with assignments. Maybe i am over thinking the way to do them, and that is what is making my work load so very unbearable. Would appreciate it if maybe you could possibly just break things down for me in simple terms on how to produce a good assignment

(a) If 6 times the 6th term of an A.P is equal to 9 times its 9th term, then show that its 15th term is zero.

(b) The angle of elevation of the top of a tower 30 m high from the foot of another tower in the same plane is 60°, and the angle of elevation of the top of the second tower from the foot of the first tower is 30°. Find the Distance between the two towers and also the height of the other tower.

6. Prepare any one project out of the given below:

Conduct a survey of atleast 50 households from your locality/village, regarding population and family income. (i) Present the data related to family members in tabular form mentioning frequencies. (ii) Calculate the average family size. How many families are above the average family size? (iii) Draw the Bar graph for top 10 earning families.

(b) Observe a cricket match to be held in the current year. Prepare a project report indicating comparison of performances of the two teams with respect to : (i) data of individual scores. (ii) team-wise average score per over (iii) run rate of individual batsman who did batting (iv) run rate of individual bowler who did bowling (v) draw a bar graph displaying the 5 top scoring batsman of the winning team.

Apart from affiliated schools, NIOS is presently having Study Centres (AAs, AIs, & AVIs ) in Jails of India also. It was observed that more number of jail inmates wanted to join NIOS courses but because of their poor financial condition, they were unable to do so. Accordingly, it was felt that if NIOS could offer the courses to jail inmates free of cost, it would enable them join NIOS courses for getting themselves educated. Also, if they are provided quality education during their stay in jails, it would certainly help them in earning their livelihood and bringing them into the mainstream of society after they are released from jails.

There will be two options for the payment of fee, supporting documents required.

The learner has to be ready with the Scanned copy/soft copy (jpg, jpeg files) of the given below documents which will be required to be uploaded while registering for the Admission to Secondary and Senior Secondary courses

Passport/Statement of Operational Bank Account/Appointment Letter from the Employer on Printed Letter Head, if living in rented accommodation - copy of any proof of permanent address along with present Rented Agreement

updated in NIOS result. If TOC Board marked with (*Other) is selected then the Result should be available on the Concerned Board Website or Learner has to submit result verification letter from Concerned Board as per NIOS norms

Transfer of Credit (TOC)

Ex-Secondary/Senior Secondary learners of the following Boards of School Education who have passed in at least one subject, but have not qualified in the course, may seek admission in the respective course at NIOS and avail facility of TOC.

A learner should seek Transfer of Credits (TOC) at the time of admission in the subjects which are included in NIOS scheme of studies.

The learners who had applied for Transfer of Credit (TOC) have to send original failed marksheet mentioning the Reference Number on the back of Mark Sheet to the concerned Regional Centre.

Dual Enrollment and Part Admission

Under this provision, if in case a learner is studying in a regular school, or has already passed Secondary/ Senior Secondary examination or any other higher course from any recognised Board/University, he/she may opt for upto four subjects of his/her choice, to update knowledge and educational qualifications. However, on passing, only the Marksheet will be issued and no other Certificate will be issued. The entry requirement for dual enrolment and part admission will be as per NIOS admission rules (Table-3 Entry Requirements).

Instructions for online Admission to Secondary and Sr. Secondary courses in NIOS for the year 2023-24

  • 1 After successful submission of Online Application Form for Admission to Stream 1 Block 1, you will get a confirmation on your email address and Mobile Number submitted during registration process.
  • 2 You can make the Payment during the registration process or you can also make the payment later by login into Student Panel using the user name and password sent to you in your email.
  • 3 After successful payment of the Admission fee, you will be communicated through email with payment receipt. You can also print/download your payment receipt and your Application Form from your dashboard after login.

You are registering for On Demand

On-line admission for learners who want to appear under the on demand examination system (odes) of nios for secondary level (stream-3)or sr. secondary level (stream-4).

Stream for On-line admission is open throughout the year for those learners who have already passed the Secondary Examination from the recognised Board and wish to take part admission in one subject or up to 4 subjects for updating their qualification, or learners who had appeared but could not clear, or who were eligible but could not appear in the Public Examination of the Secondary level from any recognised Board and want to appear through On Demand Examination System of NIOS for the Secondary level only and entry requirement of age, address proof as per table 3. The learners may upload the failed marksheet/Admit Card (Hall Ticket) alongwith relevant/supporting document and photograph on appropriate space available in the Online Admission Form for confirmation of the admission. The learners who had applied for Transfer of Credit (TOC) have to send original failed marksheet mentioning the Reference Number on the back of Mark Sheet to Online Cell, NIOS, Room No. 408, A-24-25, Institutional Area, Sector-62, NOIDA-201309, Uttar Pradesh. The Subjects available for appearing through ODES at Secondary level are Hindi (201), English (202), Sanskrit (209), Mathematics (211), Science & Technology (212), Social Science (213), Economics (214), Business Studies (215), Home Science (216), Psychology (222), Indian Culture & Heritage (223), Painting (225) and Data Entry Operations (229).

1. Answer any one of the following questions.

(a) The temperature in Leh was 9°C below zero while in Amritsar it was 1°C above zero. At the same time the temperature in Mount Abu was 2 °C . Represent the temperatures of these places on number line. (See Lessson-1)

Numbers with a negative sign are less than zero

Right of zero represented by ‘+’ sign and to the left of zero represented by ‘–’ sign.

+ Sign numbers can be denoted as simply numbers  

On a number line the number increases as we move to the right and decreases as we move to the left.  

1: Draw a line and mark some points at equal distance on it

Mark a point as zero on it. Points to the right of zero are positive integers and are marked simply 1, 2, 3  and so on , while points to the left of zero are negative integers and are marked – 1, – 2, – 3 and so on

(b) A rectangular sheet of paper 44cm × 18cm is rolled along its length and a cylinder is formed. Find the volume of the cylinder. (See Lesson 21)

Let the radius be r

We know that the length of the sheet = circumference of the circle and height of the cylinder = 18cm

Circumference of the base = 2πr=44

=> 2 * 22/7 * r = 44

=> r = 7

Again, 

Height of the cylinder=breadth of the rectangle = 18cm

Volume of cylinder = πr 2 h

 = 22/7 * 7 2 *18

= 2772 Cm 3

2. Answer any one of the following questions.

(a) Diagonals of a quadrilaterals PQRS bisect each other. If ∠P = 40 0 . Determine ∠Q . (Lesson-13)

Ans: If the diagonals bisect each other than it is a parallelogram.

Now, Sum of adjacent angles of a parallelogram is 180°  

So, Angle P + Angle Q = 180°

Given, Angle P = 40 0 

Then, Angle Q will be =180 0 – 40 0 = 140°

(b) Determine the ratio in which the line 3x + y – 9 = 0 divides the segment joining the points (1, 3) and (2, 7) (See Lesson-19)

Let the line divides the points in k: 1 ratio according to section formula 

(2k+1/k+1, 7k+3/k+1) = (x, y) It must satisfy the given equation so => 3(2k+1/k+1) + (7k+3/k+1) = 9 => 6k+3+7k+3/k+1 = 9 => 13k+6=9k+9 => 13k-9k=9-6 => 4k=3 => k=3/4

Hence, required ratio will be 3:4.

3. Answer any one of the following questions.

(a) The length of a rectangle is 12 m more than twice the width. The area of the rectangle is 320 Square meter. Write an equation that can be used to find the length and width of the rectangle. Also find the dimensions of the rectangle. (See Lesson-6)

Let the width of the rectangle be X mtr

Then Length of the rectangle will be = (2X+12) mtrs

Area of the rectangle = 320 square mtr

Area of Rectangle = length × width = 320

=> (2X+12) × X = 320 

=> (X + 6) x X = 160 (dividing both side by 2)

=> X 2 + 6X 160 = 0

=> X 2 – 10X + 16X - 160 = 0

=> X(X-10) + 16(X-10) = 0 

=> (X-10) (X+16) = 0

=> Either X-10=0 or X+16=0

=> X = 10 or X = -16

=> X should be positive value, X = 10

Therefore Width of the rectangle = X = 10 mtr

And Length of the rectangle = 2X + 12 = 2×10+12 = 20 + 12 = 32 mtr

(b) There are two rectangular paths in the middle of a park as shown in the adjoining figure.

AB = CD = 100m

AD = BC = 70 m

HE = SR = 5 m

Width of 1 st road (SPQR) =5 m

Length of first parallel road 70 m

Area of first road 70×5=350 sq m

Width of 2 nd road (HEFG) = 5 m

Length of second road 100 m

Area of second road =100×5=500 sq m

Area of the common part of cross road with 5 m width that lies at the center of the park 5×5 = 25 sq m

Area of Path = Area of first road + Area of second cross road−common area

= (350+500) − 25

Consider the ∆ABC, let AD be the bisector of ∠A and BD = CD. It is required to prove ∆ABC is an isosceles triangle i.e. AB = AC. For this draw a line from C parallel AD and extend BA. Let they meet at E. It is given that ∠ BAD = ∠ CAD    ... (1) CE||AD ∴ ∠ BAD = ∠ AEC  (Corresponding angles)  ... (2) And ∠ CAD = ∠ ACE (Alternate interior angles)  ... (3) From (1), (2) and (3) ∠ ACE = ∠ AEC In ∆ACE, ∠ ACE = ∠ AEC ∴ AE = OAC (Sides opposite to equal angles)  ... (4) In ∆BEC, AD||CE and D is the mid-point of BC using converse of mid-point theorem A is the mid-point of BE. ∴ AB = AE ⇒ AB = AC  [Using (4)] In ∆ABC, AB = AC ∴ ∆ABC is an isosceles triangle. NIOS Solved TMA Class – 12: Mathematics

Nios solved tma 2023 class 12 maths.

The National Institute of Open Schooling(NIOS) every year ask students to submit TMA online. Mathematics is also one of them. If you will be able to submit your assignment on time, you will be awarded with 20 marks. This marks will be separately visible to your report card. NIOS TMA help students to score high marks.   • Two students solve a quadratic equation \[x^{2}+bx+c = 0\]. One student solves the equation by taking wrong value of b and gets the roots as 2 and 5, while second student solves it by taking wrong value of c and gets the roots as – 3 and – 4. Find the correct roots of the equation.
  • A survey was conducted in 1000 families of a city, from which the following information was obtained. i. 40% of families read newspaper A. ii. 20% of families read newspaper B. iii. 10% of families read newspaper C. iv. 5% of families study both newspaper A and newspaper B. v. 3% of families study both newspaper B and newspaper C. vi. 4% of families study newspaper A and newspaper C. vii. 2% of the families read all the three newspapers.
