Writing a "study plan" for Keio & Waseda applications

I actually have a J.D. and have been a practicing attorney for the last year and a half. Because of my husband's job, we are moving to Tokyo in June and with the job market being as it is, I am going to be able to do what I've dreamed about for awhile - do an intensive study program. I'm currently applying to Keio and Waseda and both require a "study plan". Both basically ask why you are applying to the program and what you plan to do during and after. Writing it in Japanese and coming up with some plausible reason behind why I would want to study (other than just so I can watch anime without the subtitles =), but how important is this statement and how should I structure it. I think both schools have competitive programs and I really would like to study at one of these schools (preferably Keio, although Waseda has a renowned program) - so I don't want to screw this up. I never did study abroad in undergrad or law school and this seems a little bit different than a personal statement. Any help/guidance/comfort would be appreciated. dana

I applied for and was accepted to both schools. If I remember correctly, the keio application could be written in English without penalty, so certainly do that if you are not confident in your Japanese. I ended up turning down both schools and coming to Waseda as a graduate student on a MEXT scholarship, so ironically I have still been able to study at Waseda's same language school (gets good marks in my books, I will continue to take classes there next semester). Since we can't tell you why you would like to go to these schools, you'll have to figure that out yourself or give more details. I will, however, post copies of the essays that I wrote as possible examples. Obviously these are not intended for anyone to copy (mandatory disclaimer). Accordingly, America needs experts on specific countries in Asiaﾂ―people who have lived there, speak the language, and understand the culture. Furthermore, America needs individuals who can look at Asia with a broader lens, who are experts not just on one country but on regions in Asia, and therefore able to understand the complex interactions between multiple countries within those regions. America needs these people. Yet despite all of the indications that the new world order will revolve around Asia, in America there is still a dearth of expertise on the region. From primary school through postgraduate programs, America still focuses on Europe and ignores Asia. In short, America is headed for a personnel crisis. I believe I can help. I want to use the skills that I acquired studying English at university and teaching English in Japanﾂ―writing skills, critical thinking skills, Japanese language skills, intercultural communication skills, and flexibilityﾂ―and become a regional specialist on East-Asia. I will finish my term on the JET Program in August and hope to enter Keio University's Japanese Language Program (JLP) in September. Furthermore, the Mita campus is located in close proximity to the International House of Japan (Roppongi), which contains myriad English language resources on Japan, and which I would like to join as a library member. Studying at Keio would give me access to resources that studying at other language schools could not. Furthermore, I am excited by the possibility of taking international studies courses at Keio University. Although my Japanese may not be sufficient for auditing normal university classes during my first semester at the JLP, I am confident that I will be ready by my second semester. I am also excited by the courses taught in English by the International Center, especially ﾂ'Japanese Foreign Policy,' ﾂ'Japan in the Foreign Imagination,' and ﾂ'Special Study of International Relations in East Asia.' Taking such courses would be the prefect prelude to entering graduate school at Waseda, while taking normal university classes would allow me to simultaneously improve my academic Japanese while broadening my knowledge of East-Asian studies. If accepted, I would make use, not only of the academic resources at Keio, but also its social resources. To learn a language, one has to actively incorporate it into one's daily life, not just study out of books, and to that end I would embrace the opportunity to become a member of Keio's vibrant university community. I am interested in basketball, cycling, and film; in order to practice Japanese and to meet like-minded students, I would like to join one of Keio's many clubs. While at Keio, I would like to spend as little time as possible in my apartment, and as much time as possible studying in the library, participating in clubs, meeting with professors, and exploring Tokyo. As an English teacher, I have refrained from using much Japanese with students or fellow English teachers, as my role has been to help them improve their English. But when I finish JET, I am dying to use Japanese all day, every day. For the next year, I want to live Japanese, and Keio's JLP would be the perfect place to begin that life. As I said at the beginning of this essay, I see the JLP as the perfect bridge between my past and my future. It would connect my life as a teacher in rural Japan to my life as a graduate student in Tokyo. It would connect my Japanese self-study with academic study in a graduate program. It would connect me to resources, people, and opportunities that would allow me to pursue my dream of building connections between Asia and Japan. In short, I strongly believe that my participation in the JLP would help me grow personally and professionally and that I would be an asset to the Keio University community.

Wow - your essays are beautiful. I've written both of mine in Japanese (with as much kanji as I can); Keio has an 800 character limit. Would you recommend that I write a longer one in English (which I can get away with) or submit the Japanese version even though it would be shorter, but in Japanese. Congrats on the MEXT scholarship - those are hard to come by. Since I'm already out of graduate school though, I will just have to pay this one out of pocket.

Thanks for your help again. You gave me a lot of good insight into how I should approach it. Unfortunately, since I'm only JLPT 3, I can't do any of the graduate programs I'm qualified for (law) and I really can only take a year off to do this, so I guess I'll be the oldest one in the program. I just hope that the fact that I am older doesn't work against me. hontoo arigatoo gozaimasu. (not having japanese input on the computer I'm using is

I'm applying to the Keio's JLP for Spring 2010.. and I'm worried about my gpa and essay.. I think I'm more worried about my essay now (after reading yours). My mother and my uncle have attended Keio in the past so I want to apply here too.. Anyways, do you have any suggestions regarding to the application process? After reading your essay, I feel like my essay is elementary in comparison to yours... T____T I'm so worried. And my GPA is pretty bad.. Should I even bother?

I'm applying for the International Program at Keio right now and I'm kind of confused, since my Japanese is far from being sufficient enough to actually convey all my goals in the study plan. Sending it in English only is okay too, as I have seen here? I can't get an official translation right now, since due to the current situation, the embassy here is busy with a lot of other things... does anyone know if it's okay to send the plan in English only? After all, Japanese proficiency is not a requirement for the program..  

@cosoli I wrote mine in pure English, and got the admission.

Note: the following forms are for use in applying for fall 2024/spring 2025 admission..

Please use the designated forms for: (b) Student Exchange Application Form; (c) Study Proposal; (e) Proficiency in Japanese Language; and (g) Certificate of Health.

All of the documents must be written either in Japanese or in English. A Japanese or English translation is required if the text is written in any other language.

• Official nomination letter (cover letter) from home institution
• Student Exchange Application Form
• This study proposal is required for all applicants, including graduate students who would like to focus on taking courses rather than conducting research while at Keio. If you are a graduate student and wish to concentrate on taking classes, please indicate what courses you would like to take and what you would like to learn from these courses.
• Please refer to the Study Information to fill in this Study Proposal.
• This academic reference should be written, signed and dated by a professor at your home institution within the past 3 months.
• An academic reference written by a TA (Teacher’s Assistant) or used for internal selections at your home university is not acceptable.
• If the latest transcript is not available at the time of the application, your home university needs to submit the original copy as soon as it is issued.
• If you are a Graduate student, please submit the official transcript of Master’s semester.
• No background, color, taken within 6 months, printed on glossy paper, upper body with head uncovered, and facing forward. Up to 49 KB.
• Proficiency in Japanese Language (self-evaluation sheet)
• Must be filled in and signed by a medical practitioner, NOT by the student.

Noriko Endo

Dr. Noriko Endo is an expert in energy policy and risk governance, specializing in nuclear energy liability. She is currently project professor at Keio University, and lectures on environment and energy theory. She also has lectures at Nuclear Law Association India regularly. 

The Japanese government appointed her as a member of the Industrial Structure Council in July 2013, Fiscal System Council in March 2014, Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy in May 2014, Special Committee on New Clear Compensation Scheme in April 2015, Space Policy Committee in July 2016, and Steering Committee of Nuclear Damage Compensation and Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation in March 2018.

She also sat on the board of NTT DOCOMO, Inc. in June 2016, and assumed a member of Management Advisory and Evaluation Committee of Japan Bank for International Cooperation in January 2018.

She draws on her experience as a journalist with a career spanning nearly 20 years, and she served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of The Diamond Weekly (2006-2011). Prior to joining The Diamond Weekly, she worked for Kinzai, an affiliated research body of Japan’s Ministry of Finance where she gained first-hand experience in understanding government policy.

In 2015, she started a research project concerning risk communication and public acceptance, and currently leads round table discussions with women leaders in the Japanese industrial world to address the issue of environmental policy sustainable for future generations. As an extension of the project, international discussions are also held. 

She obtained her PhD in Energy Science at Kyoto University. Her thesis, which proposes innovative approaches to disaster risk management after Fukushima entitled “The Study of Japan’s Nuclear Damage Compensation Scheme” was published on September 27th by Iwanami Shoten, Publishers. It was awarded the 34th Energy Forum Grand Prize. She was the recipient of the Osaragi Jiro Prize for Scholarly writing, and is a prominent critic in Japan.

In today’s competitive environment where education has moved beyond the traditional sphere, the UCEAP Program offered by the Keio University in Tokyo explores the vast and growing field of Psychology. I have successfully completed a two year course in Psychology from a community college majoring in Psychology. I am passionate about pursuing a profession that utilises the diverse psychological streams. Growing up in Japan has acquainted me with the culture and society but only on a superficial level; the UCEAP course at the Keio University would give me an opportunity to imbibe the rich culture and values of Japan. Being a Korean, living in Japan I am fascinated by the influential combination of the two cultures.

The Keio University is one of the most popular institutes in Japan with a world-class academic infrastructure, proactive educators and a personalised curriculum that addresses specific needs of the students. What sets the Keio University apart from other institutes is the sensitivity to performance of each student. The aim is to build strong and wholesome personalities on the way to wholesome education. I have received education in Japanese language till sixth grade; I want to learn Japanese to be able to get a strong hold over the advancements in the field of Psychology. The best way to learn about a culture and society is to learn the native language as it the best form of expression and communication. Being a determined and hard working individual I have made persistent efforts to learn about the Japanese heritage from friends and peers in Japan. Their inputs have strengthened my aim of pursuing further education in Japan. The UCEAP program is an international forum of education; I will get an opportunity to interact and communicate with International and native students. The very fact that the entire process would enrich me not only professionally but personally too makes me more determined. Keio University has personalised courses in Psychology with interesting options like Behaviour Modification, Clinical Psychology, Economic Psychology and Organisational Theory. The course is conducted in smaller batches in comparison to other universities to give personalised attention to students to adapt to the challenging international environment.

Proactive educators like Professor Umeda at the Keio University make learning an enriched and interesting process full of practical examples as it teaches students to apply the theoretical concepts in the real world. I have keenly followed all his enlightening discourses and articles. I am enthusiastic about putting in hours of hard work and managing my current academic pursuits with the above course. I am seeking assistance from native friends to improvise my Kanji so that I am well prepared to attend the program. Japan is one of the leading countries that have the best industrial mechanism worldwide. It has set an example for the world in terms of effective utilisation of resources and time management. I hope to learn these attribute from the Japanese culture and complement them with my Korean roots. I wish to became a successful professional and utilise my academics in the international arena; USA is one them. In the age of globalization where organizations have employees worldwide; Kieo University will give me an edge through its practical, experimental and international program. I hope my application substantiates my eagerness to pursue the UCEAP course from your esteemed university. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Part 8: Using ChatGPT

Thinking of using ChatGPT? If you ask Chat GPT to write your statement for you, it will simply make stuff up; a whole statement full of lies. However, engage with it as if it is your counsellor, and it can be extremely helpful. In this part I suggest a couple of really useful prompts, and give some further helpful tips on how to use AI usefully and ethically.

Part 7: Writing a Personal Statement for two subjects

Are you applying for two different subjects? How to write a statement that covers two different courses could be the most asked question in university admissions history, and the answer is not straightforward. There are a number of possible scenarios, and in this part I suggest how to approach these.
