The BEST Kindergarten Halloween Activities
- October 2, 2021
At the beginning of my teaching career, Halloween made me nervous thinking about how crazy of a day it could be with silly kids. I learned quickly how to keep my day structured on Halloween so as not to have a crazy day, but still plan lots of fun Halloween activities for my students. Read below for a bunch of great kindergarten Halloween ideas.
Kindergarten Halloween Reading Activities
During our reading block, I read my students a great Halloween book and had them do a reading response. My favorite book to read them was Ghosts in the House . This is such a cute story and is perfect to complete a beginning, middle, and end graphic organizer . It has a clear beginning and ending with many events in between. You can purchase our beginning, middle, and end graphic organizer included in our story elements products as seen below in the picture. Read our blog to learn about how we teach story elements in kindergarten . Click on the title of Ghosts in the House to purchase from Amazon.
* This page contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase we will get a small commission with no additional cost to you.
Ghosts in the House by Kazuno Kohara: Your kids will love this story about a girl and her cat who went to live in a big old house with just one problem… it was haunted! Fortunately, this girl isn’t just a girl. She is a witch, and she knows just what to do with all the ghosts!
During independent reading time, introduce this fun easy reader to your students. Model how to read the book, then find and circle the sight words and/or number words in the book. Your students will love reading, finding sight words, and coloring this cute Halloween book .
Kindergarten Halloween Writing
This Halloween writing activity was always so much fun for my students. They wrote about what they were going to be for Halloween. I first modeled it by telling them what I was going to be and then drawing a picture of myself and writing a sentence. Next I had students turn and talk to a partner about how they were going to dress up. I created a Halloween word bank on the board by writing their responses. Then I had students complete a Halloween writing worksheet like the picture below. If a student wasn’t going trick or treating, they could write about any costume they wanted.
Kindergarten Halloween Math Activities
Math was always exciting on Halloween, because it was pumpkin math! It’s so much fun to bring a pumpkin to your class and investigate it with your students. You could also get enough small pumpkins so your kids can have their own pumpkin to investigate. (I always asked parents to donate about 2 or 3 weeks before needed.) I used the math manipulatives in my classroom to measure our class pumpkin. After completing the fun Halloween math worksheet (see below), my students voted on what they wanted the face of our class pumpkin to look like. I either carved the face that won the vote, or drew the face with a black sharpie marker.
Kindergarten Halloween Science
This fun and easy Halloween science experiment is perfect for Kindergarten. You will love how simple this is, and your students will love how fun it is. I had my kids sit in a circle, so they could all see the experiment. I used a small bag of Reese’s Pieces candies, a plate, and warm water. First, I arranged some of the orange candies in the shape of a pumpkin on the plate. Then, I asked my students to hypothesize what will happen when I pour the warm water on the plate with the candies. After discussing their hypotheses, I pour the water on the plate and we watch the colors run. Then we talk about what we learned when the warm water got on the candies. We have a free simple scientific method chart which is great for this experiment.
Kindergarten Crafts for Halloween
Creating ghost mosaics was fun and a great decoration for the classroom. I gave my students a piece of black construction paper, a few white strips of construction paper and three black small squares of construction paper. Using a white crayon, I had them draw an outline of a ghost (big hump with squiggly line at bottom). They tore the white strips into squares. I had them start gluing their white squares on the ghost outline. Then they filled in the rest of their ghost by gluing white squares in the middle. Finally, they cut the corners off of the small black squares and glued these on for the eyes and mouth of the ghost.
Kindergarten Halloween Snack Ideas
There are so many wonderful Halloween snack ideas. One of the easiest and fun snacks I’ve found is banana ghosts. I cut some bananas in half and gave my students three chocolate chips. I had them push the chocolate chips into the banana to make eyes and a mouth to create a ghost.
Kindergarten Halloween Songs
These YouTube kindergarten Halloween songs are great when you have some extra time in your day.
Five Little Ghosts (2:10)
Halloween Stomp (2:40) – Your kids will be up and moving and dancing along with this Halloween video.
Ten Little Monsters (1:49)
More Kindergarten Halloween Books
I read Halloween books throughout the day. One book I made sure to read at some point during the day was The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything . Your students get to stomp, stomp, shake, shake, clap, clap… all the way through the book. See below for this great Halloween book and some of my other favorites. Click on the titles to purchase from Amazon.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams, illustrated by Megan Lloyd
Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman, illustrated by S. D. Schindler

Hands-On Halloween Centers for Kindergarten
October 3, 2022 misskindergarten Leave a Comment
One of my favorite ways to keep students engaged in literacy and math practice is to bring some seasonal fun to the classroom. Using themed literacy and math centers is an easy way to do this! If you’d like to add some holiday learning activities to your classroom this fall, check out these hands-on Halloween Centers for Kindergarten !
Halloween Literacy Centers
Literacy activities with a special Halloween twist will keep your students engaged in practicing a variety of skills. These Halloween theme activities are always a hit with kindergarten students!
Phonemic Awareness
A fun literacy game for young learners is this Trick or Treat Beginning Sounds activity! Your students can take turns with the letter spinner, then cover the Halloween candy with a corresponding beginning sound. The game continues until all of the candies have been covered. You’ll probably find that your students will want to play again when they’re finished!
You can also continue the Halloween theme to syllable practice with the Stirring Up Syllables activity. Students will determine how many syllables they hear as they name the picture on each spoon. Then they will match the spoon to the cauldron with the correct number.
Letter Recognition
A pumpkin patch letter match game is a fun way to help your students practice identifying letters. This activity can be customized for the needs of your class. Students can either use a spinner that shows both uppercase and lowercase letters together, or a spinner that only has uppercase letters.
They will use a plastic marker or mini eraser to cover the letter on their pumpkin mat that matches each spin. The game continues until they have four in a row or fill in their whole card. Students will want to play this game again and again, so it’s an excellent option for practicing literacy concepts!
Word Families
If your students are ready to practice short vowel word families, they’ll love the Spooky Spider Sort! This activity focuses on word families containing short a and short i. Students can match picture cards to the word family shown on each spider web. For more accountability, you can add a recording sheet! Students can color the spider with the correct word family for each picture.
Sight Words
Bobbing for apples is a traditional Halloween activity that you can also use for literacy practice! Prepare multiple apples with sight words that you’d like your students to practice. (The apple cards for this activity can be edited!) Place the prepared apples in a bowl, a bag, or face-down on the table. Students can then pick up an apple card, then read and write the sight word.
Halloween Math Centers
Your students will also love to have some Halloween fun with these festive centers that focus on a variety of math skills and number concepts.
Number Identification & Counting
Your students will love this candy counting activity that practices counting, one-to-one correspondence number recognition, and number formation! Students will roll a die with different combinations of candy. After rolling, they will count the candy and write the corresponding number on the recording sheet.
By October, kindergarten students are more comfortable with counting and ready to add! In the Potion Commotion center, young learners will be able to roll two dice and add the numbers together. They can place Halloween mini erasers or other game pieces on the answer until they have covered all of their numbers!
Another activity that can be used for addition or counting is the Gone Batty center! In this game, students will take turns choosing a card with an addition sentence or a collection of moons. Students will place a small manipulative on the bat with a corresponding number. (Googly eyes are perfect for Halloween math manipulatives!) If they choose the “Gone Batty!” card, they can choose to cover any number. The game continues until all of the bats have been covered.
Comparing Numbers
Students can compare numbers using the Ghost with the Most center! Students will take turns choosing a ghost card with a number. The student with the larger number will place a manipulative on their game board. The game continues until a student covers all of their ghosts. For an additional challenge, students can switch to identifying the smaller number.
Measurement
Your students will be able to practice non-standard measurement with monsters! They can use a line of monsters to measure the height and width of a variety of Halloween items. Each card even contains a guide line to help students practice measuring independently!
More Uses for Halloween Centers
You can use these centers in many different ways! They don’t have to be confined to literacy and math stations.
- Morning Work – Add these hands-on activities to your morning work tubs to ease into a day of learning.
- Small Group Interventions – Keep your students engaged in extra math and literacy practice!
- Early Finishers – These literacy and math activities can keep your students engaged in meaningful work until the next task begins.
- Homework – Some recording sheets can be used as stand-alone worksheets that can be sent home for extra practice.
- Halloween Party Alternative – You don’t need a dollar store shopping spree to have a festive Halloween celebration in your classroom! Create a fun day full of low-prep and engaging learning activities.
Printable Halloween Centers
The hands-on activities shown above (and more!) are included in a collection of Halloween centers for kindergarten. Each activity comes with a recording sheet and a child-friendly, illustrated instruction card. The recording sheets can be used to increase accountability for the center or as an informal assessment afterward.
These centers are designed to be ready to go with minimal prep . Simply print, laminate for durability, and add some simple Halloween manipulatives to bring some extra fun to your classroom this October. These activities are easy to store, so they will be a big hit with your students year after year! Click below to take a closer look at this set of Halloween centers.

Let’s have a look at a sample of these Halloween Math activities in action.
You can count on these number and counting Halloween math worksheets to be your go-to resource for covering foundational number skills. Beginning with counting to 5, the activities progress through counting to 10 and then 20, followed by skip counting, number comparison, tally marks and number words. With the range of worksheets included, differentiation is a breeze.
In the Halloween Count & Color worksheet students count Halloween objects and color the matching number.
For a more hands on counting activity, students will love completing the counting 1-10 number puzzle. Students cut the mixed up picture into strips and re-arrange the strips into the correct number order.
The picture puzzle is a great way to support students that are still mastering counting 1 to 10. The students can use the picture to self check that the numbers are in the correct order.
The Candy Corn Count printable is also great for reinforcing counting from 1 to 10. Students cut and paste the missing candy corn numbers to complete the number sequence in each row.
This activity is great for reinforcing counting on from different numbers. The Halloween Math Activities (Kindergarten) packet also contains Candy Corn printables for skip counting by 5s and 10s.
Counting past 10 and recognition of teen numbers is covered with this ten frame counting printable. Teen numbers combined with ten frames will further develop the students number sense skills. The ten frames visually demonstrate that teen numbers always have 1 completely filled ten frame or a group of 10.
Skip counting is also important for developing number sense. This skill is a predecessor to multiplication and division in later grades. The Halloween Math Activities (Kindergarten) packet contains numerous skip counting printables for skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s.
In the Witch’s Shoes worksheet, students practice skip counting by 2s.
Students cut and paste the numbers to skip count by 2s. Students can use the shoes to check that the skip counting order is correct.
Tally marks are a great way to demonstrate the relationship between sequential counting and skip counting as the tally marks group together on every 5th one. In the Magic Potion Tally Count, students count the tally marks to see how many potion bottles the witch made from her brew in each cauldron.
To show their answer, students cut and paste the potion bottles to the cauldron with the matching number of tally marks.
The Halloween Number Words worksheet is designed to help Kindergarten students with reading number words. With this Halloween themed printable, your Kindergarten students will love learning their number words.
Once Kindergarten students start mastering their numbers and counting, they can be introduced to addition and subtraction. When introducing addition, the emphasis should be on using math counters or real life objects for a concrete hands on activity.
The Scary Addition Puzzle printable is a great math activity for combining with counters to practice addition to 5. Students cut out the puzzle strips and solve the addition problem on each strip.
Students paste each puzzle strip on the matching answer. The result is a cute Halloween picture that students can color.
For more hands on addition practice, students can complete the Halloween addition worksheet. In this math activity, students are provided with bat counters to help them solve the addition to 10 problems.
This is an ideal no prep math activity for use in math centers, small maths groups, with substitutes, or for homework.
An essential math outcome in Kindergarten is for students to be able to decompose the number 10. The Magic Potions math activity is a great way for students to visually explore ways to make 10. Using 2 different colors, students color the potion bottles to create different combinations that add to 10.
Number bonds are a great activity for creating fluency for composing and decomposing numbers for addition and subtraction. In the Batty Bonds activity for reviewing number bonds to 10, students find the missing number to complete the bond and write it in the blank bat wing.
The number line is a great tool for supporting students in their journey to mastering subtraction. Solving the subtraction facts with the number line helps kindergarten students move from understanding this concept in a concrete way to an abstract way. The Halloween Subtraction worksheet works on subtraction within 5.
Measurement, Patterns and Graphs
Telling time using an analog clock is a skill that young students need to master. The Witching Hour printable is a quick activity for reinforcing telling time to the hour on an analog clock.
Students cut and paste the digital time to the matching analog clock.
Measuring with non standard units is the first step Kindergarten students take to learning measurement. Measuring with non standard units means measuring with any object as long as the items used are the same size. The Scary Measurements math activity includes a Witch’s hat ruler for students to use in measuring Halloween objects.
Students cut the ruler out and use it to measure the Halloween objects. They record how many witch’s hats each object is in length or height.
A line is provided to support students with their measurements. Students record their answers in the boxes beside the lines.

15 Kindergarten Videos for Halloween – Read, Move and Learn!
Want to find kindergarten-friendly videos that hit the mark in October? Here is a list of teacher-recommended videos for Halloween .
It can be fun to change up our normal routine in the classroom on a holiday and add a video or two into our lesson plans.
For example, you just might need a learning video that can help bring the level of excitement down from a holiday party or a brain break video that can help get the wiggles out.
Whatever you need – here are Halloween-themed books read aloud, brain break videos, and some learning videos that can help you teach.
Halloween-themed stories
These stories are good read-alouds for Halloween. They are fun and keep the holiday age-appropriate.
I’ll be sharing affiliate links and more information about each book (in case you want to read a hard copy) so you can check things out for yourself.
Big Pumpkin
My personal favorite Halloween read-aloud is Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman.
This book is fantastic and if you can play the audio version for your party while you hold up the book (or have a parent volunteer do it) – even better!
Get the book >>
The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything
The most classic Halloween read-aloud is probably The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything .
It’s a great pattern-based story that will have kids chiming in. Plus it’s easy to add motions for the repetitive parts to help keep the wiggles under control during a sugar-filled-kind-of-day.
Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete?
We’re all fans of Pete the Cat in kindergarten. So, why not Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete ?
This read-aloud video is super quick – so if you only have a few minutes for a transition or while waiting for something – show this one.
Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Spookley the Square Pumpkin could also be considered a pretty classic story to read to your class. The lesson about learning to not judge is a sweet one and be great to tie into the funny pumpkins project.
Crankenstein
If you want to read something that feels Halloween-related but refreshingly isn’t – go for Crankenstein .
Because… we all feel a little cranky sometimes and you can call in what they learned in this book on the day they come back after Halloween {wink}
Ten Timid Ghosts
Go full-on Halloween with Ten Timid Ghosts . It’s quick, cute and full of classic, Halloween-y things without being scary .
These books are also pretty good read-aloud books kindergarten teachers read to their classes:
- Creepy Carrots
- Creepy Pair of Underwear
- There’s a Witch Under the Stairs
- Room on the Broom
- Go Away Big Green Monster ( and activity )
Brain breaks
Brain breaks give students the opportunity to break from focusing by moving to music in order to recharge.
Halloween Stomp
This movement video is designed to get kids moving and done in under 3 minutes. Students move like a monster, witch, skeleton, werewolf, spider, zombie, ghost, and vampire.
Students “move” in place to replicate the movements in the video.
But you might also like this “Halloween Stomp” version –
This stomp song is more directed for students to follow. They will like the costumes and the dance moves. This one is just a bit over 3 minutes so it’s still perfect for a brain break.
If You’re a Kid… Halloween Remix
What would a video series be without a Harry Kindergarten video? {wink}
Students listen to the directions and move to match the description with a free-dance break in between each set of directions.
Halloween Freeze Game
Students listen to the Halloween-themed directions and move until they hear “Boo!” and then they freeze. In just over 2 minutes students fly, march, shake, tiptoe, and crawl.
Monster Moves
This Go Noodle-style song has a “let me see your monster moves” repetitive section and then simple dance moves that students can do while staying in place. It’s just over 3 minutes.
Learning videos
These videos are meant to help you teach mini-concepts in the classroom.
Trick or Treat – What Types of Food?
If you’re trying to teach about food choices in connection with Halloween – this song quickly covers good, sour, and sweet foods. It’s a quick video (less than 2 minutes) so you can use it as a springboard for discussion.
Five Little Ghosts – Subtraction
This Five Little Ghosts video is just like the Five Little Ducks fingerplay many of us are familiar with. Use this to talk about taking away one and using subtraction.
Let students show how the numbers change using a five frame and little ghost marshmallow cereal manipulatives (available around Halloween time) or drawing the story out on whiteboards. You can model the subtraction sentence in between each section of the video.
Count to 10 Halloween
This video uses groups of ten Halloween characters to practice counting to 10. Count witches, ghosts, monsters, vampires, and werewolves.
If your class is beyond counting objects one-to-one up to ten, I would pick a color for each group of characters and model how you can count by tens.
Draw a ten frame for each group and then use a bingo dauber (dot maker) to quickly show how many. Then count by tens (to fifty) to show how you can quickly count all of the Halloween things together.
Alphabet Halloween ABC Song
See a list of Halloween things from A to Z while listening to letter sounds. This quick alphabet song is very kid-friendly (except I don’t think most kinders will know who the Addams family or Uncle Fester is… the selections for Aa and Uu).
But it’s a fun way to review letter sounds with some Halloween fun.
Let’s wrap it up
There you have it – videos that teachers are using for Halloween in their kindergarten classrooms.
I hope that these books read aloud, exercise videos, and learning videos are helpful as you teach.
Thanks to all of the kindergarten teachers who chimed in to share their favorites on the KindergartenWorks facebook page !
