Green Marketing: A Study of Consumer Perception and Preferences in India

  • Bhatia, Mayank ;

Published Web Location

Concerns have been expressed by manufacturers and customers about the environmental impact of products during recent decades. Consumers and manufacturers have directed their attention toward environment friendly products that are presumed to be “green” or environment friendly like low power consuming (energy-efficient) electrical appliances, organic foods, lead free paints, recyclable paper, and phosphate free detergents. Indian marketers are also realizing the importance of the Green Marketing Concept. Although a variety of research on green marketing has been conducted across the globe; little academic research on consumer perception and preferences has been carried out in India. This research provides a brief review of environmental issues and identifies the green values of the consumers, their level of awareness about environmental issues, green products and practices. This paper highlights the consumers’ perception and preferences towards green marketing practices and products with the help of a structured questionnaire. A study was conducted on 106 respondents. High level of awareness about green marketing practices and products was found among the consumers. Green values were also found to be high among the respondents. Research has given good insights for marketers of the green products and suggests the need of designing the marketing communication campaigns promoting green products due to high green value among the consumers. Results of regression analysis reveals the view that overall green values, awareness about green products and practices and the perception regarding seriousness of marketing companies towards green marketing had positive significant impact on consumer persuasion to buy and prefer green products over conventional products.

Topic 1 - Marketing and its link to sustainable development

The concepts involved are those of marketing and sustainable development. Over the years, they have become closer and closer, with any business looking to implement greener marketing. Problem: how is sustainable development beneficial to the use of greener marketing on a daily basis? Talk about sustainable development in companies, ecological products and their impact on consumer choice. Also, deal with greener communication and everything relating to the environment and its protection in the actions carried out by the groups. Give specific examples.

Topic 2 - Communication and green marketing

The two concepts have been linked for a short time, especially since communication and sustainable development can be seen as sometimes contradictory concepts. Problem: how to use communication in the implementation of green marketing? Talk about business communication methods, their impact on green marketing, and their usefulness. Talk about awareness factors in companies and what exactly is meant by green marketing. What are its advantages and disadvantages? What are the differences with more traditional marketing?

Topic 3 - New technologies and ecology in companies for more responsible marketing

These two notions are paradoxical, new technologies are often not compatible with ecology. The constructions of men on the planet to allow the development and operation of new technologies clearly appear to be in contradiction. Problem: how to combine new technologies and ecology within companies as part of more responsible marketing? Talk about the concept of green marketing, define the nuances and responsibilities of each player in the context of environmental protection. What new technologies are used, and how do they serve the objectives of green marketing on a daily basis?

Topic 4 - Reconciling the ecological argument in a new green marketing

The ecological argument has become essential in companies, both for managers and for new candidates from the younger generations, who are increasingly interested in the ecological question. Problem: how are ecological arguments essential for the well-being of a company and the development of more reliable marketing? Talk about consumers and their new vision of advertising communication. Why do the old ways no longer work? How to implement more responsible marketing, and for what objectives? How to combine ecological objectives and commercial objectives? What influence does ecology have on consumers and on business partners?

Topic 5 - Green marketing: a real issue or a fad?

The question that many consumers or even professionals ask is whether green marketing is just a trend of the moment or a real commitment. Problem: is green marketing a new way of considering communication or a purely commercial opportunity? Talk about the contributions of green marketing compared to traditional marketing. What are the changes? How is green marketing defined? Give examples of green marketing campaigns and their influence on the merits of the company. Why do some people call green marketing an opportunistic method? Sources : Codeur, Vie publique, Acteur durable

Kontic, Ivan, and Jasmin Biljeskovic. "Greening the marketing mix : A case study of the Rockwool Group." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, EMM (Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Management), 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-12777.

Purpose: To explore how a company can make its marketing mix, the four Ps, greener. This is done with a case study of the Rockwool Group.

Background: The Rockwool Group is the world’s leading producer of stone wool. It consists of twenty-one factories in three continents and its primary business area is within insulation. The Rockwool Group’s products improve the quality of life and helps to alleviate environmental problems, such as the greenhouse effect, smog and acid rain.

Problem: Today many companies want to improve their greenness. A way to do this is by greening the marketing mix. The current green marketing literature only touches upon certain aspects of the marketing mix, but there are no recognized studies that provide guidelines on how to green the marketing mix.

Methodology: The data collection consists of several semi-structured interviews with employees from different departments. The authors interviewed employees from three subsidiaries from different parts of the world – Scandinavia, North America and the Balkans.

Conclusions: Through the case of the Rockwool Group the authors have explored how to green the marketing mix. This has shown that product, place and promotion have several factors that can be greened. However, this specific case study only shows how prices set a premium are greened. Another case focusing on standard prices can provide further suggestions to green the price.

To Create a Greener Future, the West Can’t Ignore China

green marketing thesis topic

Fighting climate change is a promising area for engagement between Western companies and China. However, geopolitical strains, the disruption of business relationships by the Covid pandemic, and domestic Chinese policies all make engagement complex. In this article the authors examine the complexities of the current climate-change opportunities in China and present practical strategies for businesses ready to enter the market.

There is a twofold opportunity, they explain. First, China offers a vast market for Western-developed solutions. The Chinese government has set ambitious targets, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. That goal creates significant opportunities for firms with cutting-edge technologies. Second, businesses have an opportunity to integrate China’s own advances in climate-related technology.

The authors go on to outline four strategies, all of which involve partnering in some way. They advise companies to make sustainability a global theme, to join or form coalitions to find safe spaces for technological development, to forge partnerships with local companies for market access, and to insource technology.

Four ways for companies to safely engage

Idea in Brief

The opportunity.

Fighting climate change is a promising area for engagement between Western companies and China. After all, China is responsible for 27% of global emissions and offers a vast market for green tech.

The Challenge

Geopolitical strains, the disruption of business relationships by the Covid pandemic, and domestic Chinese policies all make engagement complex.

The Solution

To engage effectively with China, consider forming coalitions for safe technological development, forging local partnerships for market access, and insourcing innovative technology.

In the current geopolitical landscape, marked by escalating tensions between Western nations and China, it’s a challenge to identify potential areas of collaboration between East and West that would yield mutual benefits and foster trust. But fighting climate change is one. Climate change is a problem that affects every nation, and it cannot be solved without China’s involvement because the country contributes 27% of global emissions, according to the World Bank.
