fellowship for phd in english literature in india

The Ph.D. in English at Ashoka University is designed for students who are passionate about literature as well as the wider world. The curriculum exposes students to diverse modes of analysing texts that collapse the traditional disciplinary silos of historical period and language. Students are asked to formulate questions that are firmly grounded in academic rigour while pushing the boundaries of current scholarship. Teaching and research are seen as mutually constitutive, and students receive extensive training in pedagogic practice, underscoring the dialogic nature of all learning and writing. As they progress in the programme, students are encouraged to experiment with their teaching in the classroom. The Ph.D. in English thus aims to produce colleagues whose work is academically rigorous, but who are also not afraid to inject intellectual adventurousness into their theory and practice.

The English Department at Ashoka University has strengths in literary theory, Indian literatures (including Dalit and Sufi literatures), Translation Studies, global medieval and early modern literature, Indian Shakespeares, Precolonial literature of European-Indian encounter, Queer Theory, Digital Humanities, Performance Studies, Postcolonial Literature, Modernism, Film Studies, and Ecocriticism.

Students thinking of applying to the Ph.D. programme in English at Ashoka are advised to first visit the university website and acquaint themselves with faculty specializations before devising a possible topic of research. The programme will only accept students whose specific research interest makes a clear fit with the scholarship of one or more members of the faculty.

All our PhD students are fully funded for a period of five years. In addition, we also offer funds for books and travel, including for international conferences.

Requirements

Requirements to Apply

डॉ. बी. आर. अम्बेडकर विश्‍वविद्यालय दिल्ली Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University Delhi Established by The Government of NCT of Delhi

Indian Flag

PhD English

Any student with a postgraduate degree from a recognized university and a minimum of 55% (or as per Ambedkar university rules) can apply for admission.

Eligibility

The distinguishing feature of the Research programme offered by the English faculty of Ambedkar University Delhi (AUD) is that students shall be encouraged to pursue inter- or multidisciplinary research based on the assumption that concerns raised in literary texts often find resonances or analogies in other disciplines. The faculty shall make every effort to create an intellectual environment in which a researcher has the confidence and freedom to challenge canonically accepted critical positions and methodologies. The rationale behind any research undertaken in this programme shall be to understand how a literary or cultural text is profoundly influenced by art, politics, style, history, psychology, image-making, translations and technologies that define the spirit of the age in which literary production happens. Literary research in the contemporary world should, therefore, be inspired sometimes by present anxieties and discontents, sometimes by new areas of knowledge and visions of a different future; it should re-establish, for its own time and location, the truth or the enigma of any text; and, finally, it should claim its place in the same cultural and moral habitat in which other acts of reason and imagination take place

PO-1 Apart from the outcomes that are already listed, the English PhD programme seeks to train scholars in inter-disciplinary methodologies and engaged research

PO-2 It trains them in thorough understanding of the critical and theoretical paradigms related to their area of research

PO-3 It helps them develop an ability to read, question, and critically explore and formulate one's responses to all forms of cultural productions and the processes behind these productions.

Entrance Process

Eligibility: Any student with a postgraduate degree from a recognized university and a minimum of 55% (or as per Ambedkar university rules) can apply for admission. Entrance Examination: The written entrance examination shall evaluate a candidate’s research aptitude, capacity for critical thinking and the ability to write a coherent argument in English. A section of the entrance test will be based on the readings uploaded on the website.

Proposal: Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the entrance examination will be asked to submit a research proposal within a very short notice period after the admission test result is displayed on the website. They shall then appear for an interview which will be based primarily on their research proposal.

The Research proposal (2000-2500 words) should follow the following format:

1. Introduction: Research Area

2. Aims and Objectives

3. Research question 2

4. Existing Research in the area

5. Research Approach/Methodology

6. Bibliography A provisional admission to the PhD programme will be offered to candidates fulfilling the minimum requirements. The proposal will carry a weightage of 25%, the entrance examination 50% and the interview 25%.

CASI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program

The CASI Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program provides dynamic early career researchers with a one- to two-year opportunity to establish their profile as scholars of contemporary India. The fellowship has no teaching obligation, providing young scholars with valuable time to advance their own research agenda. The Center also provides support in connecting Fellows to its considerable networks among scholars and policymakers both in the U.S. and in India. Ideally, Fellows will pursue their research in conjunction with CASI’s own projects, which they are frequently given the opportunity to lead. Fellows also often receive modest funding support for pursuing their own independent projects.

Fellows are also expected to play a key role in the Center’s thriving intellectual community. Fellows organize the academic year seminar series , plan workshops, and contribute to the Center’s working paper series . They also serve as mentors to the incoming CASI-affiliated graduate students and on selection committees for CASI Student Programs’ annual competitions .

In 2021-22 CASI offered two such fellowships, and now three in 2022-23, an expansion it seeks to make permanent. CASI has supported seven young scholars through this program since 2010. Four hold academic positions, tenure track and tenured, in India, Singapore, and the U.S. Most have continued their CASI affiliations as key research collaborators on the Center’s current research themes including agricultural markets and urban India.

Applications and recruitment occur during the Spring Semester starting in January. Please do not write to CASI Faculty about the Center’s Fellowship Opportunities. If you have questions about Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program, please email: [email protected]

Department of English

The Doctoral degree in English is one of the strong programmes currently being run by the Department.  Ever since the programme was introduced in the year 1964, the Department has continued to insist on maintaining extreme rigor and high standards in its research scholars: from the time that scholars are admitted to the programme through the period of research to the time of completion of the project and the process of evaluation.  As a result, among those who have obtained their PhD degrees from the Department, several have gone on to make a significant mark in diverse fields at national and international level.

Over the years, in response to global shifts, the thrust areas of doctoral research at the Department have both shifted and evolved.  Earlier the Department used to promote researches in canonical areas.  Since the archival resources for such researches were located in England and America, the prospective doctoral scholars were encouraged to go abroad to conduct their research. However, with growing archival material available online, this too has altered. In addition, the Department has also taken cognizance of newer areas such as researches across the media, post-colonial studies and Literature in English, Translation Studies and Cultural Studies with their interdisciplinary orientation, and research in these areas are being encouraged.  Consequently, we at the Department have opened our Doctoral programme to newer areas and methodologies and welcome a greater numbers of research scholars from India and abroad.

We have also begun encouraging relatively younger scholars to get enrolled as doctoral students.  An indication of the last mentioned shift is the recent restructuring of both the M.Phil and PhD programmes. An M.Phil student can now directly enroll in our PhD programme before completing his/her M.Phil in the first semester provided he/she meets the eligibility criteria laid down (please see guidelines for M.Phil Ordinance, VI-A).
