Garbage poses a serious danger to a country's growth and it is also a major threat to success in the modern economy. Industrialization and commercialization have only served to aggravate this issue. Ironically, life depends on the greenhouse effect, which is a natural occurrence. If this phenomena didn't exist, the earth would swiftly lose heat and freeze. However, if substantial amounts of these gases continue to exist, the greenhouse effect will be amplified.

This may lead to an increase in global average temperatures and the melting of the polar ice caps. As a result, both individuals and the ecosystem suffer from this. The ecology may become unbalanced and endangered animals may go extinct. It can also have negative effects on the climate, often leading to loss of life and property destruction.

It is our duty to keep our surroundings clean, especially any public areas like parks, tourist attractions and restrooms. We should refrain from dumping trash everywhere, whether on the ground or in public spaces. Dustbins should be used in their place to maintain such areas clean. The ideal method to develop this habit is to launch a cleaning campaign in our home, kitchen, living space, and community. Pollution had existed long before humans evolved. For instance, volcanic eruptions commonly pumped massive amounts of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere, causing acid rain. The greenhouse gas, ozone, forms from natural, photochemical reactions in the atmosphere.

However, significant levels of pollution occurred only after the Industrial Revolution, when untreated exhausts and toxic waste products were released into the environment. Air pollution was rampant, with thick, toxic smog covering most towns and cities. Water pollution affected many water bodies. Toxic substances leached into the soil, hampering the soil quality.

Today, there have been many measures to curb the effects of pollution, but its repercussions can still be observed. For instance, the land and sea ice near the poles have been decreasing at an alarming rate. This has led to the debate regarding climatic factors and their impact on our environment. There was a time when lead used to be added to motor fuel. This substance, combined with the world’s increasing demand for motor vehicles, caused a spike in air pollution. What made this air pollution more dangerous is the fact that the air had high levels of lead.

Lead is toxic and can cause a vast array of health problems. The most common illnesses are neurological in nature. Lead can also travel through the placenta, between a mother and her unborn child. Moreover, young children and infants are even more sensitive to lead. They can develop learning deficits, behavioural problems and also a low IQ.

Furthermore, some studies have arrived at a “lead-crime postulate”, where children who were exposed to high levels of lead were more likely to indulge in criminal activities. This correlation was made as to the crime rates during the 1980s, and early 1990s were rather high. Lead can also cause neurological effects on vertebrates and impair the reproductive capabilities of plants. More ominously, lead can be absorbed into the tissues of such organisms, and they can pass it on to us when we consume them.

Technological progress also brings newer forms of pollution. Radioactive pollution is one of the rarer types of pollution. This type of pollution occurs naturally as well – elements such as uranium and thorium are present in rocks and soil. Carbon-14 is a radioactive isotope of carbon naturally present in all living organisms. It is created by cosmic rays. However, these natural sources of radiation are of little concern. Only anthropogenic sources of radioactivity are considered lethal sources of pollution. For instance, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is the most publicised nuclear disaster ever to occur. The total death count was documented to be at 16,000. However, unofficial reports indicated that the death toll was much higher. Most deaths occurred due to acute radiation poisoning and many other deaths were caused due to radioactivity-induced cancer. Though it has been more than a few decades, radioactivity still persists around the site of the nuclear reactor. Efforts to contain the radioactivity included building the Shelter Structure, more popularly known as the “sarcophagus”. It was built in December 1986 and enclosed the reactor, preventing radiation from leaking through the building.

Though the levels of pollution have dropped down since the industrial revolution, we still see many repercussions to this day. Following are some extreme cases of pollution caused by anthropological activities.

The Great Smog of London was a severe case of air pollution that occurred in 1952. The event caused massive disruption by severely affecting visibility. It also caused a variety of respiratory illnesses in 1,00,000 individuals and the death of over 4,000 as a direct result of the smog.

In India, pollution is even more rampant. Delhi has recorded one of the worst cases of air pollution, with the air rated as “hazardous” in November 2017.

It is an issue that creates economic, physical, and social troubles. The environmental problem that is worsening with each day needs to be addressed so that its harmful effects on humans as well as the planet can be discarded.

Causes of Environmental Pollution

With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution.

Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution.

Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in today’s world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. The dry-farm waste, dry grass, leaves, and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to an excess of sulphur dioxide in the air.

Automobile pollution

Industrial air pollution

Burning garbage

Brick kilns

Indoor air pollution

Decomposed animals and plants

Water Pollution: Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues. The waste products from the growing industries and sewage water are not treated properly before disposing of the wastewater into the rivers and other water bodies, thus leading to water pollution. Agricultural processes with excess fertilizers and pesticides also pollute the water bodies.

The Main Sources of Water Pollution as Follows:

Marine commerce.

Industrial effluents joining seas and oceans.

Dumping of radioactive substances into seawater.

Sewage is disposed of into the sea by rivers.

Offshore oil rigs.

Recreational activities.

Agricultural pollutants are disposed of into the water bodies.

Soil or Land Pollution: Soil pollution or land pollution results from the deposition of solid waste, accumulation of biodegradable material, deposition of chemicals with poisonous chemical compositions, etc on the open land. Waste materials such as plastics, polythene, and bottles, cause land pollution and render the soil infertile. Moreover, the dumping of dead bodies of animals adds to this issue. Soil pollution causes several diseases in man and animals like Cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid, etc.

Noise Pollution: With an increasing population, urbanization, and industrialization, noise pollution is becoming a serious form of pollution affecting human life, health, and comfort in daily life. Horns of vehicles, loudspeakers, music systems, and industrial activities contribute to noise pollution.

The Main Sources of Noise Pollution as Follows:

The machines in the factories and industries produce whistling sounds, crushing noise, and thundering sounds.

Loudspeakers, horns of vehicles.

Blasting of rocks and earth, drilling tube wells, ventilation fans, and heavy earth-moving machinery at construction sites.

How Pollution Harms Health and Environment

The lives of people and other creatures are affected by environmental pollution, both directly and indirectly. For centuries, these living organisms have coexisted with humans on the planet.

Smog is formed when carbon and dust particles bind together in the air, causing respiratory problems, haze, and smoke. These are created by the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial and manufacturing facilities and vehicle combustion of carbon fumes.

Furthermore, these factors impact the immune systems of birds, making them carriers of viruses and diseases. It also has an impact on the body's system and organs.

2. Land, Soil, and Food Effects

The degradation of human organic and chemical waste harms the land and soil. It also releases chemicals into the land and water. Pesticides, fertilisers, soil erosion, and crop residues are the main causes of land and soil pollution.

Water is easily contaminated by any pollutant, whether it be human waste or factory chemical discharge. We also use this water for crop irrigation and drinking. They, too, get polluted as a result of infection. Furthermore, an animal dies as a result of drinking the same tainted water.

Furthermore, approximately 80% of land-based pollutants such as chemical, industrial, and agricultural waste wind up in water bodies.

Furthermore, because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly.

Crops and agricultural produce become poisonous as a result of contaminated soil and water. These crops are laced with chemical components from the start of their lives until harvest when they reach a mass level. Due to this, tainted food has an impact on our health and organs.

Climate change is also a source of pollution in the environment. It also has an impact on the ecosystem's physical and biological components.

Ozone depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and global warming are all examples of environmental pollution. Because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly. Furthermore, their consequences may be fatal for future generations. The unpredictably cold and hot climate impacts the earth’s natural system.

How to Minimise Environmental Pollution?

To minimise this issue, some preventive measures need to be taken.

Principle of 3R’s: To save the environment, use the principle of 3 R’s; Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.

Reuse products again and again. Instead of throwing away things after one use, find a way to use them again. Reduce the generation of waste products.

Recycle: Paper, plastics, glass, and electronic items can be processed into new products while using fewer natural resources and lesser energy.

To prevent and control air pollution, better-designed equipment, and smokeless fuels should be used in homes and industries. More and more trees should be planted to balance the ecosystem and control greenhouse effects.

Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.

To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.

Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.

The melting icebergs in Antarctica resulted in rising sea levels due to the world's environmental pollution, which had become a serious problem due to global warming, which had become a significant concern. Rising carbon pollution poses a risk for causing natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, and other natural disasters.

The Hiroshima-Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters in Russia have irreversibly harmed humanity. Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible.

Pollution is a vice that is affecting the world that we are living in. The forms of pollution include soil pollution, water pollution, air pollution and noise pollution.

Pollution is mainly caused by vehicles and industrial waste. Industries release chemicals to water bodies and release harmful gases to the atmosphere.

Pollution is caused by poor farming methods. This is where farmers use harmful chemicals to farm and they later find their way into water bodies and in the air.

Another cause of pollution is sea spills . Ships leak oil in the oceans which affects marine life.

Wildfires also cause pollution. When a lot of trees burn in or forests, the gases released cause environmental harm.

Poor disposal of waste is also another major cause of corruption. This waste causes pollution to the water bodies and in the soil.

Pollution is a major factor that has caused global warming. There are many causes of pollution and we should ensure that we protect the environment from being affected by these pollutants.

By this, our country becomes pollution free.

Besides, the noise pollution caused due to them can have an adverse affect especially on the new born babies, elderly people and animals.

We must say no to crackers to avoid pollution and its harmful after affects. We should also inspire those around us to refrain from bursting crackers.

Spread Love Not Pollution

The beauty of festivals is that they bring our near and dear ones closer. As a part of the Diwali celebration, people visit each other and exchange gifts. Many people host parties on this day to celebrate the festival with their relatives and friends. The celebration begins by offering prayers to Lord Ganesha and Laxmi. This is followed by lighting diyas and candles and illuminating the house. A round of card game adds to the festive mood.

We must take this festival as an opportunity to bond with our loved ones by spending quality time with them. Having dinner, cracking jokes and sitting in the company of our friends and family members can be far more enjoyable than bursting crackers and adding to the pollution.

Diwali should be the time to spread love and joy not pollution.

Diwali is a beautiful festival and we must retain its beauty and sanctity by saying no to crackers. We must all pledge to say no to crackers to save our environment. A pollution free Diwali can be the best thing.

Fire crackers are known to produce deadly smoke. The smoke emitted by the bursting of certain crackers is said to be much more harmful than that produced by factories and vehicles. It impacts the atmosphere far more adversely and causes numerous air-borne diseases. People suffer from breathing problems and many other health issues because of this hazardous smoke. Animals, birds and other living organisms are affected as badly.

Small Steps can make Big Difference

Bursting crackers does not do any good to anyone. It only deteriorates the air quality and causes health hazards. Why must we indulge in such an activity and put our lives at risk?

We can contribute our bit towards a healthier environment by celebrating Diwali without fire crackers. Diwali is a beautiful festival. Several customs and traditions form a part of this festival. From decorating and illuminating our place to wearing ethnic clothes, from meeting our near and dear ones to playing cards, from preparing homemade sweets to making colourful rangolis – there are so many enjoyable things to indulge in during this festival.

Striking off fireworks from the list should not impact the fun at all. However, it can do a lot of good to the environment. We must also inspire those around us to refrain from bursting crackers. Children must especially be educated about the harmful effects of crackers on the environment. Such small steps from our end can make a big difference.

Diwali is the time for celebration. It is the time to spread smiles and laughter. We must not ruin the fun by polluting the environment and incurring health problems. We must remember that this trivial act of ours is becoming a cause of global concern. It is contributing to global warming which is one of the biggest threats to our environment. We should act wisely and say no to crackers.

This festival falls just before the beginning of the winter season. The atmosphere around this time is misty. The smoke released by fire crackers gets trapped in the mist and this augments the impact of pollution.

Effect on People

As the pollution level rises, the human health is impacted negatively. The air is filled with harmful pollutants that cause problems such as shortness of breath, choking of lungs, burning sensation in the eyes and redness and rashes on skin. Those already suffering from health problems such as asthma, heart problem and lung infections are worst affected by the aftermaths of burning crackers as their problems augment during this time. It gets difficult to breathe. Besides, the noise pollution caused on Diwali is unbearable and can cause deafening effects.

Effect on Animals

Just as the human beings, the increase in the air pollution level after Diwali celebrations makes life difficult for the animals too. They find it difficult to breathe and suffer from various other illnesses caused due to the smoke emitted by fire crackers. They are also immensely affected by the noise pollution caused due to bursting of crackers. These innocent creatures are seen running around looking for places to hide to escape these loud noises.

Measures to Control Diwali Pollution

Here are some of the measures to control Diwali pollution:

Sensitize Children

Children are particularly excited about burning crackers. They begin bursting fire-crackers days before the festival. Parents must take this as their responsibility to sensitize children about the harmful effects of burning crackers rather than merely asking them not to do so without giving any reason. Children these days are smart and will definitely understand why they must refrain from burning crackers.

Ban on Firecrackers

The government must step in and put a ban on the manufacturing of firecrackers. This can be an effective way of controlling Diwali pollution. The problem cannot be curbed without the intervention of the government. If this is not possible then at least there should be a check on the manufacturing of crackers. Crackers that produce high amount of air and noise pollution must at least be banned.

Go for Low-Noise/Low-Smoke Crackers

If we do have to burn crackers then we must choose them cautiously. It is a good idea to purchase those crackers that do not produce much noise and also do not emit much smoke.

We must act like responsible human beings and put an end to this inane practice of burning fire crackers. It is time to understand that this is not adding to the celebration, this is only adding to the pollution and causing serious harm to our planet.

Clean energy’s dirty secret: the trail of waste left by India’s solar power boom

As vast solar plants multiply, so does the scrap, set to reach 19m tonnes by 2050. But disposing of the waste often falls to informal traders who risk injury when dismantling broken panels

U nder the scorching sun, a sea of solar panels gleams in the semi-arid landscape. Pavagada, 100 miles north of Bengaluru in southern India, is the world’s third-largest solar power plant , with 25m panels across a huge 50 sq km site, and a capacity of 2,050MW of clean energy.

India has 11 similarly vast solar parks, and plans to install another 39 across 12 states by 2026, a commitment to a greener future.

Yet this solar boom has a downside: the waste it generates from the panels, made of glass, aluminium, silicon, rare-earth elements; as well as power inverters and wiring.

“While manufacturers claim decades of longevity, degradation of these panels sets in much sooner,” says Atif Mirza, director of Fusion Sprint Recycler, a solar-farm waste contractor in Uttar Pradesh. Panels can break during installation and transport or through exposure to monsoons and typhoons.

India’s solar ambitions come with a hefty amount of waste. With the nation targeting output of 280GW of solar power by 2030 , of which 70.1GW is already installed, one study forecasts an accumulation of more than 600,000 tonnes of solar waste by then, with this projected to increase 32-fold to more than 19m tonnes by 2050.

About two-thirds of the waste is expected to originate from five states – Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh – which house eight of India’s 10 largest solar parks.

Naranaiah Amaranath, general manager at Karnataka Solar Power Development Corporation, which oversees the Pavagada solar park, acknowledges that while there are basic regulations regarding waste management, the responsibility largely falls on the private firms that own the solar plants.

Protocol dictates that solar waste from the plants must be transferred to e-waste contractors, authorised by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), within a specified timeframe, typically 90 or 180 days.

However, practical and economic challenges abound. Site managers in Pavagada note that the selection of contractors is centralised, one company manages logistics for plants across India

“Most solar plants are located in remote areas, so the logistics and transportation is expensive, and once dismantled there is hardly any money from each individual part,” says Srinivas Vedula from EPragathi, a Bengaluru-based e-waste recycling company. “Plus, the solar glass has no value.”

Mirza, who is the official contractor for Ayana Renewable Power’s plants across India’s solar parks, including in Pavagada, says he sells dismantled parts to traders but admits: “We don’t know what they do with it.”

Because authorised e-waste contractors are often unwilling to handle the waste in accordance with the CPCB protocol, a network of informal operators – who dismantle, aggregate, transport and recycle panels – have stepped in to fill the gap.

T ayyab* and his family work at the tail end of this waste-management chain. In a dimly lit and poorly ventilated room in Bengaluru, the 20-year-old and his younger siblings spend their days dismantling broken panels for their valuable metals and other materials.

“I take apart the metal frame, separate the glass and sort out different metals that can be sold separately,” says Tayyab. There is no safety equipment in sight to prevent cuts from glass and sharp metals.

At a clandestine worksite in Goripalya, just outside Bengaluru, Tayyab skillfully manoeuvres through the hazardous process with bare hands and crude tools. His friend and siblings pitch in wherever they can.

Using a small three-wheeled auto-rickshaw, Tayyab’s friend Imran* makes the rounds of warehouses, collecting about 50 solar panels a week.

Tayyab’s story is just one among many in the informal solar-waste sector, where workers find ways to extract value from the under-regulated but booming renewable-energy sector.

Hussain* is from a family of e-waste dealers in household appliances, computers and televisions, but has carved out a niche for himself handling solar waste. He operates a factory on the outskirts of Bengaluru, described online as a solar manufacturer.

“There are few [people] who actually do this work,” says Hussain. “These big recyclers, who claim they deal in e-waste and solar waste, often offload their waste on to us.”

Despite lacking a licence, Hussain collects solar waste from plants across the country. “Sometimes they [plant managers] do not ask for any papers,” he says.

Hussain has more than 50 workers dismantling panels to sell the individual components to traders. “Silver is most valuable to us,” he adds.

India’s E-Waste Management Rules 2022 , which came into force last April, require solar-panel manufacturers to oversee the return of their products’ waste by arranging collection, storage and dismantling, as well as the recycling facilities. They also need to store panel and cell waste up to 2035, according to CPCB guidelines.

Solar detritus was included for the first time in the 2022 e-waste rules but Rudresh Murthy, environmental officer at Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, admits: “There is still a lot to be done.”

“Economic viability remains a critical concern,” he says, citing the abrupt closure of a solar-waste recycling firm in Tamil Nadu in 2021 due to the economic downturn during the pandemic.

Murthy is unsurprised an informal solar-waste sector is thriving, claiming e-waste dealers often “don’t even properly manage e-waste, let alone solar waste”.

Srinivas says: “The government policy on solar waste is: let’s cross the bridge when we come to it.”

For people such as Tayyab, Imran and Hussain, the chance to make a living outweighs the risk of injuries. “We have gotten used to it,” says Tayyab.

Groundwater;

Groundwater is the water present below the earth’s surface and is a vast resource of water.
Almost 22 percent of water is below the surface land in the form of groundwater.

Importance of Groundwater:

Groundwater is the backbone of India’s agriculture and drinking water security in rural and urban areas
It meets nearly 80% of the country’s drinking water and two-thirds of its irrigation needs.
Groundwater is pivotal to India’s water security.

According to the World Resources Institute : 17 countries face ‘extremely high’ levels of water stress which is threatening to result in conflict, unrest and peace among people.

Background :

India houses 18% of the world’s population on 4% of the earth’s surface area and has just 4% of global freshwater resources.
Nearly half its rivers are polluted, and 150 of its primary reservoirs are currently at just 38% o f their total live storage capacity.
Three-quarters of India’s districts a re hotspots for extreme climate events.

Relation between Water and Economy:

Water connects hydrological, food, and energy systems, impacting millions of people.
Precipitation is the primary source of soil moisture an d water stored in vegetation (green water) and the water available in rivers and aquifers (blue water).
This sector employs the most and is increasingly climate vulnerable.
The India Employment Report 2024: It shows that agriculture still employs around 45% of the population and absorbs most of the country’s labor force.
with 55% of ‘tehsils’ or sub-districts seeing a significant increase of more than 10% in southwest monsoon rainfall in the last decade(compared to the previous three).
The increased rainfall is frequently coming from short-duration, heavy rain, affecting crop sowing, irrigation and harvesting.
Making the agricultural sector more resilient to climatic and water stresses matters for jobs, growth and sustainability.
Water is a key component of the world’s clean energy transition.
It is produced using water and electricity sourced from renewables.
It is an important component o f a clean but reliable power system.

Climate crisis and its impact on hydrometeorological disasters:

According to the UN World Water Development Report 2020: Almost 75% of natural disasters i n the last two decades were related to water.
According to CEEW analysis(between 1970 and 2019): the number of flood associated events (such as landslides, thunderstorms and cloud bursts) increased by up to 20 times in India.
Freshwater , one of the nine planetary boundaries, has been transgressed (2023 study).

The ingredients of water security

● attaining water security will need a mix of the right policies, judicious use of water, including reuse of urban wastewater, and finance for adapting to a changing world., ● effective water governance needs policies that recognise its interactions with food and energy systems., ○ ceew and international water management institute (iwmi) analysis s hows that although india has adopted several policies, ■ most do not recognise this nexus while planning or at the implementation stage., ■ scaling up of green hydrogen is desirable, the link with water availability is not always considered., ● the impact of scaling up solar irrigation pumps on groundwater levels must be analyzed to deploy the technology where there is an optimal mix of solar resource and higher groundwater levels., ● policies should incorporate the food-land-water nexus through localized evidence and community engagement., ● india needs to focus on the judicious use of blue and green water t hrough water accounting and efficient reuse., ● the national water mission targets increasing water use efficiency by 20% by 2025 ., ● the atal mission on rejuvenation and urban transformation (amrut) 2.0 calls for reducing non-revenue water, which is lost before it reaches the end user, to less than 20% in urban local bodies., ○ these are not backed by any baseline set u sing water accounting principles that will help quantify the “ 20 percent” change in freshwater use., ○ in the absence of water use data(for the reference year): it is difficult to quantify the potential water saving in one sector, such as agriculture, that can then be diverted to other sectors, ■ such as industries or domestic purposes, which will drive india’s water demand., ● water accounting is essential for promoting water use efficiency a nd creating incentives for investments in treated wastewater reuse..

Way Forward

We must move from panic reactions when disaster strikes (like the water crisis in Bengaluru), to understand and respond to the chronic nature of risks we face.
Nor can environmental sustainability be reduced to sapling plantation drives over a few days.
India’s climate action h as been largely focused on mitigation in the industrial, energy, and transport sectors.
strengthening wastewater management
providing incentives to promote climate-resilient agricultural practices (micro irrigation and crop diversification)
scaling up desalination plants as an alternative water source for thermal plants and green hydrogen production.
Investment in wastewater treatment
desalination plants
agricultural extension services.
Considering the investments in India under Corporate Social Responsibility (between 2014-15 and 2020-21) , there is a potential to leverage about ₹12,000 crore worth of investments every year.
A water-secure economy is the first step towards a climate-resilient one.
