The Super Bowl, Society, and Culture Essay (Critical Writing)

Although the Super Bowl is not an official holiday in the USA, it is celebrated all over the country. It is the final game at the end of an annual football season, which is broadcast on television and watched by over 100 million viewers. Even though it is a sports event, it attracts the attention of not only football fans but also people not interested in the game itself. The Super Bowl Sunday, which takes place on the first Sunday each February, has become an American tradition involving family gatherings and watching matches on television. This paper will consider the celebrations of this event and their social meaning.

Since the Super Bowl is a large-scale occasion, it should be regulated by specific rules to avoid chaos. Therefore, the festival Sunday requires increased attention from law enforcement bodies. Since the celebration involves the consumption of a great amount of alcohol, police officers often have to arrest people for disorderly conduct and drunken driving. Furthermore, there are regulations placed on sports betting since it is a popular activity during the game. Viewers are not the only people controlled by laws and social norms. Football players are subject to the game rules formulated by the National Football League.

As for traditions associated with the Super Bowl, this event serves as a suitable occasion for family gatherings and meetings with friends. People often go to bars equipped with TV sets and watch the game there. The celebration also involves eating many festive dishes and drinking alcohol, especially beer. In fact, the Super Bowl is distinguished by the increased consumption of food and is comparable to Thanksgiving in the number of eaten products (Wenner & Billings, 2017). For people not interested in football, the celebration is associated with watching commercials, which cost large sums of money to advertisers.

During the Super Bowl, people are divided into two types according to the roles they play in the event. The first group is viewers, who watch the game and consume various complementary goods, such as clothes and souvenirs with football teams’ logos, food, and beverages, tickets, and commercials. The second type is service providers, advertisers, and goods manufacturers, who aim to satisfy the needs of the consumers and make a profit. These groups are interrelated since the existence of customers has generated producers. Among viewers, it is also possible to draw a distinction between the roles of men and women. Since the male audience is more interested in football, its representatives tend to celebrate the event among their friends. Female viewers are inclined to stay with their families and engage in festive preparations.

Overall, the Super Bowl Sunday may seem strange to an onlooker unacquainted with the tradition. If aliens came to the Earth and observed the celebration, they would think that football is a kind of a sacred game on this planet. Millions of people staring at the screen and watching players roll the ball across the field would be a puzzling sight for them. However, they would think so if they landed somewhere near a place of gathering of the game viewers. Otherwise, they would believe that the Earth became desolated since shops and other establishments are closed early on the day of the celebration, and spectators are busy watching the annual match. Generally, the view of many people gathered in one place and engaged in the same occupation would give them an assumption that the Americans are a friendly and united nation.

In conclusion, it should be said that analyzing the Super Bowl from a sociological perspective helps to explain what role sports play in the life of society. Since men are more engaged in the event than women, it may be assumed that sports serve to emphasize masculinity. By observing people’s tendency to join the community of the Super Bowl fans despite their disinterest in football, sociologists may conclude that society exerts pressure on its members. This phenomenon suggests that people always want to belong to a group. It also explains why most individuals are inclined to behave like other members of their community.

Narrative Story Point of View: Writing a Super Bowl Story

 alt=

Imagine it’s your job to tell the story of what happened in the Super Bowl football game. Naturally, the more you know about the game of football, and the more you know about the players, the better your story will be. Also, you’re going to want to choose the right type of narrator.

Are you confused about the different types of narrators? Well, you came to the right place! We are going to learn all about narrators and points of view. Let’s get started!

Mind Reading: Does the Narrator Know What the Characters Are Thinking and Feeling?

Now, imagine that you can read the players’ minds as they play the game. Would you be able to tell a better story or a different kind of story if you knew every thought and feeling that every player had? I think so! Well, that’s exactly what a “Third-Person: Omniscient” narrator can do.

In contrast, a “First-Person Narrator” cannot read the minds of the other characters any more than you or I can in real life. Although we all make guesses at what people are thinking and feeling, we don’t truly know.

For more on narrator mind-reading, be sure to read Narrator Point of View and Mind Reading .

The Two Types of Narrators

We have two types of narrators: 1) first-person narrator and 2) third-person narrator. We can break those two types of narrators into six kinds of narrators.

1. Narrative: First-Person Point of View: Central Character 2. Narrative: First-Person Point of View: Peripheral Character =============================================== 3. Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Objective Point of View 4. Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Omniscient Point of View 5. Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Limited Point of View (aka Close Third) 6. Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Shifting Point of View

Although we do have second-person pronouns, there is no second-person point of view. Be sure to read The Two Types of Narrators or Speakers in Writing .

Our Super Bowl Narrators

Once again, in our Super Bowl story, we can use two basic types of narrators:

1.  First-Person Narrator: A first-person narrator is both a character in the story and tells the story from his or her point of view. Readers see the story through the eyes of this first-person narrator. As the writer of the story, you are that first-person narrator.

In our Super Bowl story, our first-person narrator is a player on the football field playing the game. Our first-person narrator is a part of the game and the action and a character in the story. As the writer of the story, you are that player.

2.  Third-Person Narrator: A third-person narrator is an “eye in the sky” observer that tells the story. In effect, we don’t know who the narrator is because the narrator is not a part of the story. Third-person narration is a matter of grammar choices in that the narrator does not use any first or second-person pronouns (outside of quotation marks). The third-person narrator uses only nouns and third-person pronouns.

In our Super Bowl story, our third-person narrator is an “eye in the sky” watching the game on TV. This helps us grasp that our narrator is removed from the story’s action and is an observer. Our third-person narrator is watching and telling what happened. As the writer of the story, you are that eye-in-the-sky observer.

We will now break these two types of narrators into our six types of narrators ! We must choose a type of narrator to bring consistency to our piece of writing. As writers, we want to have a clear vision for our piece of writing before we begin writing. We create this clear vision in prewriting, which saves us a great deal of time in rewriting!

First Person: The Narrator is a Player on the Field

We have two types of first-person narrators.

1.  Narrative: First-Person Point of View: Central Character: You’re a player on the field. You know what you think and feeling as you play the game. Additionally, you can see the other players’ actions and behaviors in great detail, and you can hear what the players around you say.

2.  Narrative: First-Person Point of View: Peripheral Character : Everything from above applies here; however, you (the narrator) focus on the star quarterback’s game. It’s his final game, and he’s playing with an injury, and he’s breaking every record in the record book. As Sherlock Holmes once said, “Genius needs an audience.” You are a witness to his playing genius!

Third Person: The Narrator is Watching the Game on TV

In grammatical third-person narratives, the narrator never uses the words “I” or “we” outside of dialogue or quotes. The third-person narrator is not a part of the story; the third-person narrator is simply an observer and storyteller.

The Power of Third-Person: Jumping to What’s Interesting and Exciting?

The third-person “eye in the sky” is in a powerful position. In short, this narrator is in charge of all the TV cameras in our Super Bowl story. Our third-person narrator can zoom in to any part and every part of the field and watch and listen to anything the narrator chooses. Put simply, our third-person narrator can observe anything it wants to!

To tell a great story, the third-person narrator will only report what is most interesting and exciting, especially the action and the various forms of conflict.

Let’s Explore Our Three Types of Third-Person Narrators

Remember when we talked about mind reading at the beginning of all of this? Well, the one thing that makes these three types of third-person narrators different is their ability to mind read. For more on narrator mind-reading, be sure to read Narrator Point of View and Mind Reading .

Let’s take a look!

3.  Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Objective Point of View: As a third-person objective narrator watching the Super Bowl game on TV, you can report on what you know, what you see, and what you hear people say. Remember, you can see and hear everything you want to. Our goal is to tell a great story! However, you can’t read any of the players’ minds. You are simply observing and telling the story that you see in front of you. Once again, the more you know about the game of football and the players, the better your narrative story will be.

4.  Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Omniscient Point of View: As a third-person omniscient narrator watching the Super Bowl game on TV, you can report on what you know, what you see, and what you hear people say. Remember, you can see and hear everything you want to. Our goal is to tell a great story! However, you are also an all-knowing mind reader! This means that you can report on what all of the players are thinking and feeling and their entire life experiences. After all, by definition, omniscient means all-knowing .

5.  Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Limited Point of View (aka Close Third): As a third-person limited narrator watching the Super Bowl game on TV, you can report on what you know, what you see, and what you hear people say. Remember, you can see and hear everything you want to. Our goal is to tell a great story! To be honest, mind reading is hard work. It isn’t easy to keep track of everyone’s thoughts. Therefore, with limited viewpoint, you mind-read only one player: e.g., the star quarterback who is playing his final game. As narrator, you stick close to this one player, which is why “Limited POV” is also called “Close Third POV.”

6.  Narrative: Third-Person Point of View: Shifting Point of View: Shifting Point of View is usually a “Limited Point of View” that shifts to different characters in different chapters or sections of a book. Be sure to read the section above again if you’re not sure what “Limited Point of View” is.

Since the Super Bowl has four quarters, we can easily divide our Super Bowl story into four sections. Our third-person narrator will follow or “stay close” to one quarterback using “Limited Point of View” in one quarter, and the next quarter, the third-person narrator will change and “stay close” to the other quarterback. We will start a new section or chapter of our writing at each quarter break.

Quarter 1: Follow Quarterback #1

Quarter 2: Follow Quarterback #2

Quarter 3: Follow Quarterback #1

Quarter 4: Follow Quarterback #2

That’s how we write Shifting Point of View .

Good Critical Thinking On Advertising During The Super Bowl

Super Bowl events offer large firms a massive opportunity to improve their market position through reaching a massive number of customers to offer memorable awareness campaigns. Companies are able to make significant impact among millions of viewers across the globe and, hence, in the long run, it becomes possible to expand market scope easily as well as retain the current customers. However, there are several drawbacks that include the cost involved in purchasing advertisement time, time constraint since an ad only takes place within a short time and aggressiveness among consumers who are unmoved by memorable adverts.

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of the Hardees ad and Super Bowl advertisements. According to (Brassington & Pettitt, 2012), the most effective criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of advertising depends on a number of variables, such as the type media used, the advertising goals, the cost of evaluation, the level of reliability and precision required, the value that the business places on evaluation measures, the audience for the evaluation, and the budget.

Sean McDermott: It’s narrow-minded to say Bills haven’t succeeded without a Super Bowl

  • Michael David Smith ,
  • Michael David Smith

Bills head coach Sean McDermott knows that a Super Bowl is the ultimate goal, and his team has fallen short in each of his seven seasons at the helm. But don’t tell him Buffalo hasn’t had success.

McDermott told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network that the Super Bowl isn’t the only measure of a coach’s accomplishments, of quarterback Josh Allen’s accomplishments, or of the team’s accomplishments.

“I think like anything, when you talk about the Bills, whether it’s Josh, myself, our team, we’ve had so much success ,” McDermott said. “What’s left for Josh and for all of us is to take that one more step that we need to take. To say we haven’t had success or Josh hasn’t had success, I think would be kind of narrow-minded. It’s hard to win in the NFL, so you kind of regroup every year, and you take it one game at a time. But we’re all looking for Josh to really be that face of the franchise, like he’s been, and continuing to evolve, like he’s always done.”

McDermott has made the playoffs in six of his seven seasons as head coach, so in that respect it’s fair to say they’ve had success. But teams and coaches are ultimately judged on championships, and McDermott doesn’t have one yet. Until he’s been to a Super Bowl, and won a Super Bowl, he hasn’t had the success every coach is seeking.

In Kansas City, a Festive Yet Cautious St. Patrick’s Day Parade

A sizable but smaller crowd gathered one month after the Super Bowl parade shooting. Some were wary, but many were determined to not let the tragedy disrupt a treasured tradition.

A group of bagpipe players, wearing uniforms, marches down the parade. Three people wearing green cowboy hats and sitting in lawn chairs are in the foreground, watching the parade.

By Colbi Edmonds and Lauren Fox Kanan

Colbi Edmonds reported from New York, and Lauren Fox Kanan reported from the parade in Kansas City, Mo.

Irish dancers, Gaelic football players, green everything: Thousands of spectators gathered for the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Kansas City, Mo., on Sunday, the first citywide parade since a deadly shooting last month roiled the city’s Super Bowl celebration.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade, the city’s 50th this year, is regarded as one of the country’s largest, with crowds known to reach hundreds of thousands. On Sunday, a sizable — but notably smaller — crowd sporting green beanies, vests, cowboy hats and sweatshirts came together, even under high winds and chilly temperatures.

The parade showcased Gaelic Athletic Club members demonstrating their hurling skills, bagpipe players, antique fire trucks and lots of green items, including cotton candy, plaid hats and stuffed animals. There was a stand with T-shirts that read “Kansas City has our own St. Patrick,” with a photo of the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes — which at one point were almost blown away by the fierce winds.

But the festivities were not without the somber reminder of a shooting at the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade on Feb. 14 that left one dead and 22 injured, rattling the community. Two men, Lyndell Mays, 23, and Dominic Miller, 18, were charged with murder in connection to the shooting, and two teenagers were charged with resisting arrest and “gun-related” offenses .

Still, many on Sunday were determined to not let last month’s tragedy disrupt a treasured tradition.

“I don’t live my life through fear,” said Tiffany Hermann, 40, at the parade, who also attended the Super Bowl celebration. “I’m going to enjoy my life to the fullest.”

There was a heavy police presence, with more than 400 officers, including some in plain clothes in the crowd, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino of the Kansas City Police. He added that was about a 10 percent increase of officers from the year before. Several police cars lined the parade route.

Whether it was wariness over last month’s shooting, or the colder weather, or some other reason, attendance at the parade on Sunday appeared to be much smaller than that of past years. Some spectators noticed there were significantly fewer people this year.

“Normally you have to look through people. You would never find an area like this where there’s a big gap between people and nobody standing in front of you,” said Sadie Sanchez, 60, an engineering manager.

Ms. Sanchez’s daughter, Cherri Sanchez, a 36-year-old paramedic, said her brother decided not to come after being at the scene of the shooting. “He’s a little bit traumatized still.”

A group of friends who attended the Chiefs parade said they felt safer coming to Sunday’s event because the crowd was smaller. Sarah Jones, 23, a copywriter, still felt unease but ultimately decided to attend.

“I just don’t want people to think of Kansas City and think of” the shooting, Ms. Jones said, adding, “There’s so much more that’s special about here.”

For some, the cheerful and wholesome atmosphere was enough to come celebrate, despite the recent shooting.

“When the town gets together, it’s nothing but fun, love and friendship. It’s family,” said Autum Diggs, 28, who works in sales and as a medical assistant. She added, “I’m not going to let one bad apple spoil it all for us.”

A little girl holding a green hat danced to a marching band making its way through the parade. Even as her family was leaving the parade grounds, she kept dancing, as the music faded.

Nebraska Football Bringing 8-Time Super Bowl Champion to Lincoln

  • Author: Maren Angus-Coombs

In this story:

Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers announced on social media Tuesday morning that former New England Patriots head coach and eight-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick will headline as a guest speaker at the Nebraska Football X&O’s Clinic.

The clinic takes play April 5-6 at the Hawks Championship Center in Lincoln.

Belichick won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots from 2000-23. He finished his future Hall-of-Fame career with a 266-121 record in New England and won the AFC East 17 different times.

Belichick holds several coaching records, including most playoff wins as a head coach (31), and most Super Bowl appearances as a head coach (nine).

Before his time in New England, Belichick was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns and defensive coordinator with the New York Giants. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants.

He has coached in the NFL every season since 1975 and unfortunately, he hasn't been hired since he and the Patriots parted ways after the 2023 season.

The clinic with Belichick marks the first of many that head coach Matt Rhule will be running this season.

Registration for the event costs $50 and you must be at least 18 years old to attend. High school students are not permitted to attend.

A third man was charged with second-degree murder Thursday in connection with the shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl rally that killed a woman and injured nearly two dozen others.

Terry Young, 20, of Kansas City, Missouri, was also charged with unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action. He is jailed on $1 million bond and doesn’t yet have an attorney. Phone messages left for his family weren’t immediately returned.

Lyndell Mays and Dominic Miller were also charged with second-degree murder and several weapons counts soon after the Feb. 14 shooting at a parade attended by an estimated 1 million people as Kansas City celebrated the Chiefs’ second straight Super Bowl win. Two juveniles are also in custody, and three other men face gun-related and resisting arrest charges , accused of illegal purchase of high-powered rifles and guns with extended magazines, including weapons used at the rally.

Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Jean Peters Baker said the investigation has reached an important milestone.

“Everyone we’ve identified who discharged a firearm in response to the verbal altercation detailed here has been taken into custody,” she said in a statement.

Though all of the suspected shooters are accounted for, Baker said additional charges are expected.

Police and prosecutors have said the gunfire broke out when one group of people confronted another for staring at them. Authorities have said a bullet from Miller’s gun killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan , who was in a nearby crowd of people watching the rally. She was a mother of two and the host of a local radio program called “Taste of Tejano.” The people injured range in age from 8 to 47, police said.

The latest man charged and two others approached someone in the other group, and an argument broke out, according to a probable cause statement. When someone else pulled out a gun, the man pulled out his own weapon, the document stated. Surveillance video showed him appearing to shoot several times.

The man’s social media postings showed him wearing the same distinctive backpack seen in the surveillance video, and his phone data showed the device was in the area of the shooting when it happened, according to Baker and the probable cause statement.

Court documents unsealed earlier this month said 12 people brandished firearms and at least six people fired weapons at the rally. The guns found at the scene included at least two AR-style rifles, court documents said. U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore has said at least two of the guns recovered from the scene were illegally purchased.
