Meaning and Scope of e-Business e-Business refers to “carrying on business activities through internet”. Business activities comprise of Industry, Commerce and Trade. So e-commerce means conduct of industry, trade and commerce activities through commerce. Firms use not only general internet facilities for e-business but they also prefer to have their private and personal internet facilities for their internal functioning. Slide 1-1

There are various people and parties involved in electronic transactions. These transactions are extended into four directions. These are: Slide 2-1

Meaning and Scope of e-Business • B2C Commerce: The transactions taking place between business units and customers are known as B2C transactions. B2C enables the businessmen to remain in touch with his customers on round the clock basis. B2C also gives scope for C2B transactions also i.e., the customers can also make use of call centres set up by companies to make toll free calls. • Some promotional activities such as: use of music, films to attract customers are also used in B2C segment. Meaning and Scope of e-Business • C2C Commerce: the transactions taking place between customers and customers are known as C2C. In this set up business firm i.e.,seller is also customer and buyer is also customer. It provides secured market system foresale of used goods or services. • In C2C, various consumer forums are also formed. Through C2C transaction can be aggrieved or cheated customer can warn other customers not to buy such products in which he was cheated. Slide 6-1

Meaning and Scope of e-Business • Intra B-Commerce: This refers to transactions between the parties or persons who are the part of the one firm only. It is transactions within the firm that is why its is called intra-firm. Generally, a firm has to deal with its suppliers, customers, employees, etc. These are called Intra B-Commerce interactions. • The Intra B-Commerce transactions make it possible for firms to improve their speed and efficiency. For example, if marketing department wants to make some changes in the design of product on the basis of department through Intra B-Commerce transactions with no delay and immediate action can be taken by production department. Meaning and Scope of e-Business • Intra B transaction improves coordination, faster decisions and speedier work flow. Intra B-Commerce also helps the firms to interact with their employees, recruitment and selection of employees, etc. they can send reports to office through e-mail. e-Business v/s e-Commerce • e-Business is a wider term. It includes e-commerce. As commerce is one of the branches of e-business. e-Commerce deals exclusively in distribution of goods and services whereas e-business involves production, sale, distribution, after sale, inter and intra firm business transactions such as accounting, management, etc. Slide 1-2

Benefits of e-Business • Convenience: With the help of e-commerce, shopping can be done conveniently sitting at home. Millions of people exchange information in the world through e-commerce. Slide 1-2

Benefits of e-Business • Cost Saving: Trading through e-Commerce is more economical as compared to other trading because in e-Commerce, the businessmen are not required to own a showroom for display of their goods. No middlemen are required. There is direct sale to customers. Cost involved in advertisement is saved, also cost involved in carrying the products for display purpose is also saved. Slide 5-2

Limitations of e-Business • The major drawbacks of e-Business are: • Low Personal Touch: e-Business is not suitable for purchase of commodities which require personal touch such as garments, etc. Slide 1-3

Limitations of e-Business • Delay in delivery: In e-Business, order is placed by a single click of the mouse. But it takes time for vendor to process the order and deliver the goods. This may frustrate the buyer. Slide 2-3

Limitations of e-Business • Requirement of Hardware: A proper hardware set up of computer networks is necessary for e-Business and even the seller and the buyer both know the operations of internet. Slide 3-3

Limitations of e-Business • Risk: In e-Business transactions there is no direct relation between the two parties so there are more chances of frauds. There are also problems of virus, brand hijacking, hacking, etc. Slide 4-3

Outsourcing of Services • Over the last decade, a new type of business within service sector has become popular in the world. It is called Business Process Outsourcing (B.P.O) • B.P.O refers to getting a business task accomplished through an outside agency. Initially only few companies in united states adopted the practice of outsourcing by assigning the routine jobs to outside agencies so that company can concentrate on critical issues without waiting time on routine work. Later on it became popular in other countries also. Earlier companies used to hire outside agencies to perform tasks which used to come up occasionally. Slide 1-5

Outsourcing of Services • Now the trend is changed. The companies have started hiring outside Agencies to perform the routine jobs such as after sales service, maintaining Books of Accounts etc. Slide 2-5

Advantages of B. P. O • Concentration on Core Competence: By outsourcing the routine job the companies can concentrate on more crucial matters. For example, by outsourcing the sales promotion function to an advertising agency, the company can concentrate on quality and on increasing the production capacity. • Reduction in Cost: The outsourcing agencies perform the task for different companies. O • Help to Avoid Labour Problem: The outsourcing services reduce the need for employing more number of employees as the outsourcing agencies take up the responsibilities of performing routine jobs. • Benefits of Latest Development: The outsourcer maintains world class information technology infrastructure. All the modes have their own features and advantages, let us study them in detail. 

E-business is one of the biggest examples of how the business world has evolved in modern times. The conduct of trade, commerce and industry via the computer network using the internet is called e-business or electronic business. It is a broad term that encapsulates all business functions and transactions that are conducted electronically, and not merely sales. From e-commerce to digitally-conducted product development, production, inventory management, finance, human resource management, and accounting – all come under the purview of e-business.   

Discussed here are the key features of e-business that students will learn in class 11 emerging modes of the business chapter:

• Easy Distribution Process: Through e-business, many different sorts of information and services may be obtained on a computer. This has streamlined and reduced the cost of the distribution system.
• Lower Investment required: Business owners and business people do not need a large showroom or a large investment to run an e-business. All you need is a computer and access to the Internet.
• Elimination of Middlemen: Wholesalers and merchants have been vanishing since the advent of e-Commerce. The majority of manufacturers have now begun to have direct contact with clients. As a consequence, consumers pay less for items.

Despite being one of the fastest emerging modes of business, e-business has some drawbacks as well. The limitations of e-business according to emerging modes of business are:

• Lack of Trust: The disadvantage of e-business is it lacks direct communication between the seller and the buyer. The consumer is unable to touch and feel the product in real-time. This can result in distrust and apprehensions
• Security Threats: The personal and financial data of consumers are always on stake if the e-business does not have proper security measures. It is easier for scammers to lure online buyers into a lucrative deal and do fraud
• Delivery Issues: Longer delivery times than traditional business is another limitation of this model

Successful e-Business Implementation

The resources that are required and are essential for the successful implementation of e-business are listed down below:

• Access to the internet 
• Computer system 
• Webpage 
• Effective telecommunication system 
• Social presence 
• Online payment mechanism 

Receiving information about items, placing an order, receiving delivery, and making payment through the internet are all examples of online transactions. This method allows for the purchase of any sort of product, information, or service.

Payment for purchases made through online shopping may be made in the following ways:

• Cash on delivery (COD): Payment in cash is possible at the moment of physical delivery of goods.
• Net-banking transfer: A consumer can use the internet to make an electronic funds transfer (EFT) to an online vendor’s account.
• Credit/debit cards: The client can pay for any online purchases with a debit or credit card by providing the card’s number and the name of the issuing bank.

What is e-Commerce?

Another important topic in class 11 emerging modes of business is e-commerce or electronic commerce that refers to the process of trading over the internet and encompasses diverse concepts like online shopping, digital banking, online ticket booking, social networking , etc. Setting up an e-commerce business requires a website (e-commerce store) where products are displayed with descriptions, and buyers can purchase through payment gateways like Razor Pay, CC Avenue, Authorize.net, etc. 

According to this chapter, mentioned below are the types of e-commerce businesses that students will learn. Let us have a look at them-

• Business-to-Consumer (B2C): In this e-commerce model, business transactions are conducted directly between the company and customers who are the end-users of the products and services. For Example : Amazon, Wal-Mart, Flipkart, etc. 
• Business-to-Business (B2B) : When digital transactions or trading happens between two businesses, it is termed as B2B e-commerce business. For Example: inviting tenders, commercial negotiations, collaborations, etc. 
• Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C): When both the parties to e-commerce trading are customers – with no established marketplace – it is called C2C commerce. For Example : Quikr, OLX, etc.   
• Consumer-to-Business (C2B): In this type of e-commerce business,  the business transaction happens between the customer to the business. Customers can even make use of call centers to make toll-free calls to make queries and lodge complaints.
• Intra-B Commerce or Within Business Commerce: The parties involved in the computerized transaction are two sections of the same firm, according to it. For example, using the internet, the marketing department may continually communicate with the manufacturing department and have personalized items created to meet the needs of clients.  

The chapter of class 11 on Emerging Modes of Business is incomplete without mentioning the differences between the two forms of business. Hence, the salient differences between traditional business and e-business are listed down below in a tabular format. 

Outsourcing 

Once you are familiar with e-commerce and e-business, the 5th chapter based on emerging modes of business brings on the discussion on outsourcing. Understanding the concept of ‘outsourcing’ is important as an emerging model of business, and therefore, it is a vital topic of business studies. Outsourcing is the process of contracting a specific business function or operations to specialized agencies. Typically, non-core areas like software development, content writing, client communication, etc. are outsourced to a company that holds more expertise and resources. This enables the company to focus better on its core business and improve the bottom line.

• Cost Advantage: By outsourcing, companies can save their cost, time and effort in hiring and training a permanent in-house skill.

• Passage to High-Quality Services: Only skilled individuals are assigned to specific tasks, resulting in better service and fewer mistakes.

• Poor Quality: Not hiring the right outsourcing company can often result in inferior-quality services and extension of project delivery deadlines

Introduction to E-Business

The business is ever evolving. As the market sphere increases in size, not only in terms of physical shape but also in terms of reach of customers the business or the market expands its usual meaning. Now, business is not restricted to a land, rather it spreads all over the world where the customers can access the market space with the help of the internet.

This new form of market is the emerging mode of the business, known as E-Business. We will further our discussion on the same topic that is – Emerging mode of Business.

What is E-Business?

Electronic Business Refers to business that is conducted online. The e-business processes include buying and selling goods and services. Through this e-business the model customers are given services, the payments are processed, the production control is managed and all of these are done over the internet, along with the collaboration of the business partners .A range of functions is included in the E-business mode, which includes the development of intranets and extranets. In recent times, e-business has grown in leaps and bounds and has given rise to new requirements of this new business.

Types of E-Business

Business-to-Business (B2B) is the most common type of Business, where transactions occur between two businesses with their goods and services. 

Business-to-Consumer (B2C) is the most popular among other e-business models. The transactions occur online.

Business to Business E-Commerce

B2B e-commerce or business-to-business electronic commerce is the sale of goods or services between two or more businesses via the online platform. This is actually used to enhance a company’s sales effort. Sales Representatives manually attending calls from the telephone are digitally replaced by e-mail orders received electronically. This is also effective in reducing the over-all over-head costs. 

B2B business means business transactions between two businesses rather than business and customers. In the wholesale lot, the transaction is usually Business to Business while in retail level, the transaction is from a business to an individual consumer. Business to Business is recognised by the fact of the high value of transactions both in terms of goods or services and in terms of money value. While the business to consumer consists of less value than the B2B.

We see, the module of a business is ever emerging. Now we have an e-business that caters to the need of online shopping and selling. Digitization, Outsourcing, and Globalisation are some of the strongest trends that are shaping business across the world. The way business is done has undergone some fundamental changes, in the last decade or so we are introduced to some different types and modes of business. ‘Mode of Business’ can be defined as the manner of conducting business. Digitization of business has helped sellers to reach new highs in terms of reach and no physical barrier.

Electronic Business (E-Business):

E-Business can be defined as the conduct of Industry, Trade & Commerce using the computer networks. It includes all the electronically conducted business functions such as production, inventory management, product development, accounting & finance, and human resource management.  

E-Commerce: It can be defined as the firm’s interactions with its customers and suppliers over the internet. E-Commerce is a part of E-Business, E-Business is a broader term than E-Commerce.

Scope of E-Business:

The scope of E-Business is quite vast. Almost all the business & management functions can be carried out over computer networks. Viewing from the perspective of people and parties involved in the electronic transactions and networks the scope of E-Business is further visualized into four directions. They are-

1. B2B Commerce : B2B refers to Business to Business. Here, the parties involved in the E-Commerce transactions are business firms.  With an injection of the internet into business, a network of computers is used for placing orders, monitoring production, delivery of components, and making payments between two businesses.

2. B2C Commerce: As the name implies. Business Commerce transactions have business firms at one end and its customers on the other end. B2C Commerce entails a wide range of activities including marketing, promotion, and delivery of the products. Further, the B2C variant of E-commerce enables a business to be in touch with its customers on a clock basis. 

3. Intra-B Commerce: Here, the parties involved in the electronic transactions are from within the organization. E-Business is a much wider term and includes the use of intranet for managing interactions and dealing among various departments and functions within the organization. The use of computer networks makes it possible for the firm to go in for flexible manufacturing, marketing department to interact constantly with the production department or any other department for effective and efficient management.  

4. C2C Commerce: Consumer to Consumer business originates from the consumer and the ultimate destination is also consumers. When there is no established market mechanism for a product, the vast space of the internet allows persons to globally search for potential buyers on their own. Additionally, E-Commerce technology provides market system security to such transactions.

Benefits of E-Business:

1. Ease of Formation and Lower Investment Requirement: E-Business is relatively easy to start, it doesn’t require heavy investment on the procedural requirement for setting up an industry.

2. Convenience: The Internet offers the convenience of time and place. You can use the internet from anywhere and at any time. So, E-Business is enabled and enhanced by electronics and offers the advantage of accessing anything, anytime and anywhere. 

3. Speed: Much of the buying and selling through the internet involves the exchange of information that is allowed at the click of a mouse. Cycle Time i.e. the time taken to complete a cycle from the origin of demand to its fulfillment is substantially reduced due to the transformation of the business processes from being sequential to becoming parallel or simultaneous.

4. Global Reach/Access: The Internet is true without boundaries. It allows the seller access to the global market and it also affords the buyer the freedom to choose products from all over the world.

5. Movement Towards Paperless Society: The dependence on paperwork has been considerably reduced with the increase in the use of the internet. Maintaining records, getting permissions, approvals, licenses, etc. all are done through computers and electronic filing which helps reduce the use of paper.

Limitations of E-Business:

1. Low Personal Touch: E-Business lacks the warmth of interpersonal interactions. So, it is low preferable for products that demand high personal touch.

2. Order Fulfilment Speed: Information can flow at the click of a mouse but the physical delivery of the products takes time. So, the incongruence between order taking/giving and order fulfillment speed is a major hindrance. 

3. Need for Technology Capability and Competence: E-Business requires a fairly high degree of familiarity with the world of computers, this imposes a digital divide among people.

4. Increased Risk: Due to the anonymity and non-traceability of parties, there is an increased risk. 

5. People Resistance: The process of adjustment to new technology and a new way of doing things causes stress and a sense of insecurity. People may resist accepting new things.

6. Ethical Fallouts: The Internet can cause a breach of privacy. Any organization can keep an electronic eye on everything that is happening on its portal, which can go out of the boundaries sometimes.

Online Transactions:

The exchange of information in the traditional business model can only be done at severe time and cost constraints but in the presence of the internet, information or delivery of any information-intensive products and services such as software and music can take place online. There are three steps involved in online transactions. Firstly, the pre-purchase/sale of the stage includes advertising and information seeking, secondly, the purchase/sale stage is comprised of steps such as price negotiation, the closing of purchase/sale deals and payment, thirdly, the delivery stage. 

1, Registration: Before online shopping one has to register with the online vendor by filling up a registration form, this process is done to have an ‘account’ with the online vendor.

2. Placing an Order: We can select items that we want to buy and place them in the shopping cart. A shopping cart is an online record of what you have picked up while browsing the online store. After being sure of what you want to buy, you can ‘checkout’ and choose the payment option.

3. Payment Mechanism: The payment for the purchase can be done in several ways-

• Cash on Delivery(COD)- Payment of goods ordered online may be made in cash at the time of delivery.
• Cheque-   The online vendor may arrange for the pickup of the Cheque from the customer’s end.
• Net-Banking- Payment can be done through electronic transfer of funds over the internet.
• Credit or Debit Cards- Also known as plastic money, the majority of online transactions are done through credit or debit cards.
• Digital Cash- It is a form of electronic currency that exists only in cyberspace. This type of currency has no physical property but offers to use real currency in an electronic format.

Security and Safety of E-Transactions: E-Business Risks-:

Online transactions unlike physical transactions are prone to several risks. Risk refers to the probability of any mishappening that can result in financial, reputational, or psychological losses to the parties involved in a transaction. We will discuss them one by one-

1. Transactional Risk : Online Transactions are vulnerable to the following types of transaction risks-

• Seller denies that the customer ever placed the order or the customer denies that he ever placed the order. This is called ‘default on order taking/giving’.
• The delivery does not take place or the wrong product was delivered. This is a case of ‘default on delivery’.
• Seller does not get the payment for the goods supplied but the customer claims that the payment was made. This may be referred to as ‘default on payment’.

2. Data Storage and Transmission Risks: Data stored in the systems and en-route is exposed to several risks. Vital information may be stolen or modified.

3. Risks of Threat to Intellectual Property and Privacy: Once the information is available over the internet, it moves out of the private domain. It then becomes difficult to protect it from being copied. 

Outsourcing:

Outsourcing refers to a long-term contracting out generally the non-core and of late even some of the core activities to captive or third party specialists to benefit from their experience, expertise, efficiency, and even investment. Its features include:

• Outsourcing Involves Contracting Out
• Generally, Non-core Business Activities are Outsourced
• Processes may be Outsourced to a Captive Unit or a Third Party
