Custody movie review: Torn between being a campy Venkat Prabhu film and a formulaic star vehicle

Custody review: venkat prabhu directorial custody doesn’t decide what type of movie it wants to be till the very last scene of the film..

custody tamil movie review

There’s a surprise entry of a character towards the tail-end of Custody , which is like a hat-tip to Kamal Haasan’s Vikram. The scene kind of breaks the fourth wall–one of those Venkat Prabhu things–because the filmmaker is now just playing to the gallery. Of course, audiences immediately react. It’s fun, but at the same time, it is incongruous. There are many such trademark quirks of the director spread across Custody, which don’t sit well with the sombre tone of the story and the motive of the protagonist. However, it is those quirks that stay with us after the film, because the rest is just a formulaic everyday action story with contrived emotions.

When we first see Shiva ( Naga Chaitanya ), a small-time police constable, he is seen stopping the convoy of the chief minister Dakshayini (Priyamani) to make way for an ambulance. Dakshayin lauds his action and says that he shouldn’t let even a CM or a PM come in the way of his service to the people. Of course, her lines come back to bite her later. As Shiva grapples with problems in his life, a road accident puts him in an extraordinary situation, which demands him to defy his police force and the government and take the gangster Raju, sorry Razooo (Arvind Swami), in his custody. He has to produce him in the Bangalore High Court in 48 hours while the whole Tamil Nadu force headed by IG Nataraj (Sarathkumar) is on his tail.

custody tamil movie review

Custody doesn’t decide what type of movie it wants to be till the very last scene of the film. A filmmaker, who is known for mocking some of the clichés of Tamil cinema, here resorts to using the same in many instances. Be it the unnecessary songs that don’t help the film in any way despite being the collaborative effort of Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja or the flashback sequence that’s introduced to provide a motive for the protagonist, whenever Venkat Prabhu tries to make Custody a normal commercial entertainer, it ends up disappointing.

On the other hand, whenever the director is in his zone, things get pretty enjoyable, like the characterisation of Razooo. His sarcasm and Arvind Swami’s adequate performance are some of the few redeeming factors of the film. A character, at gunpoint, delivers emotive lines about truth, and Razooo says something to the tune of, “Idhellam edhukku solikkitu irukaaru? (Why is he blabbering all this now?)” Custody needed more of this than things like a forced situation that comes out as an excuse for a song. The tone of the film thus ends up being as inconsistent as its Tamil dubbing. Naga Chaitanya and the lead actors have put in a lot of effort in making the film a true blue Tamil-Telugu bilingual. But, when it comes to the songs and the dialogues of the peripheral characters, we are only looking at a Tamil-dubbed Telugu film.

This is not the first time Venkat Prabhu has tried to blend some serious tropes with his trademark humor. He pulled off such a cocktail effortlessly with Saroja. The problem with Custody seems to be that, unlike the director’s sophomore film, this has to fit in a commercial hero amidst all things wacky. Or maybe, this is an attempt of the director to break the mould that traps him, but it has come at the cost of the movie lacking the trademark originality of the filmmaker.

Custody Movie Review

2 Hr 27 Mins   |   Action   |   12-05-2023

Cast - Naga Chaitanya, Arvind Swamy, Sarathkumar, Krithi Shetty, Priyamani, Sampath Raj

Director - Venkat Prabhu

Producer - Srinivasaa Chitturi

Music - Yuvan Shankar Raja

Naga Chaitanya signed up for a full-length action movie Custody for the first time and he joined hands with Tamil director Vikram Prabhu. The trailer looked intense with Aravind Swamy, Sarath Kumar, and Priyamani as important characters. The movie was released today in theaters. Here is the review.

What Is It About?

An ordinary police constable Shiva (Naga Chaitanya) who is struggling to get married to his girlfriend Revathi (Krithi Shetty) gets into a big conspiracy. Shiva vows to bring a notorious criminal Raju (Aravind Swamy) to court but the whole department of his does not want him to, including the state CM Dakshayani (Priyamani). What did Raju do and why is Shiva so stubborn to bring him to justice? The answer to these questions is Custody.

Performances

Naga Chaitanya is alright in the movie. He did fine in the action parts and that is all. Aravind Swamy did well and he engages whenever he appears in the frame. The narration is a mess and even the talented actor like Aravind Swamy could not keep the audience connected to it. Krithi Shetty is routine. Sarath Kumar is boring. Vennela Kishore brings some laughs here and there. Priyamani played a guest role and she is fine. Ramki’s character is not needed at all. Jiiva and Anandhi did fine in their roles.

Technicalities

Except for the refreshing plotline, Custody has nothing that works. The execution is so poor that it gets more irritating as it advances. The screenplay is uneven. Too many action scenes and chases that are boasted about did not help Custody in any way. The background music doesn’t make an impact and the songs are the biggest minus for the movie. None of the songs are good, in fact, they are the biggest hurdles for the audience.

Plotline Aravind Swamy

Thumbs Down

Narration Songs & BGM Lack of depth

Custody is one powerful title Naga Chaitanya got and also the plot line is interesting. It all falls flat with the weak narration, repeated chase scenes, and mainly the songs. Custody has a good plot of a constable’s relentless effort to bring a criminal to justice while all influential forces are standing against him on his way. For starters, the story is heavily ‘inspired’ by the Hollywood movies Safe House and Assault At Precinct 13.

First things first, the first half of Custody is mostly boring with two songs and a dead slow love track in the first half. The story appears to pick up at the pre-interval but again turns boring with the unnecessary and lengthy fights at the interval. While the story is predictable, it could still be gripping and enthralling with the emotions and conversations between the lead characters. The narrative graph goes flat with a ton of chases, and action sequences that don’t let us connect to the important characters.

The second half also moves forward in the same tone again with more fights and chase sequences. At one point, it appears like a set of sequences coming and going one after the other, but none build the intensity in it. Many times when Sarath Kumar enters, Naga Chaitanya’s character appears completely sidelined. In yet another boring repeat, the directors brought up the bullet-raining gun episode that has been overused of late, except it looks like a cheaper version in Custody. It is not an exaggeration that a chaotic wedding song between the chase, and a predictable flashback with a bonding song literally test the patience of the audience. The love track resurfaces now and then but it looks more and more artificial towards the end.

The director tried to maintain the curiosity behind the story of Raju’s character which is needed, but after a point, it gets boring due to the lack of its depth in the story. The suspense element of Raju should be becoming strong as the story progresses, instead, it turns stale. Apart from the poor screenplay, the dialogues also played the spoilsport. Some dialogues and scenes are directly brought from the movie Safe House. The emotional flashback of Shiva is utmost boring and his citing the reason for what he is doing contradicts his professional reasons with the personal.

A layered story like Custody needs effective acting, good dialogues, and direction. Unfortunately, Custody has none of them. Though Aravind Swamy does his part, the lack of depth in his character cuffs his hands. Also, the love track that runs along the main story is also a culprit as it never lets the audience get acquainted with the seriousness of it. Not just that, the director’s liking for comedy barges in some scenes where it is not needed. With more of Telugu-native Tamil actors like Jiiva, Vaibhav, Aravind Swamy, and Anandhi, Custody looks like a dubbed movie in many instances.

During an action part, Aravind Swamy gives expression of being fed up to see and fight Sarath Kumar again. The audience could relate to that expression very well. Overall, Custody is a travel of a rookie cop and a high-profile fugitive that could have had a lot of intensity and emotions but is filled with repetitive extended fights and routine narrative instead.

Bottomline : Escape From Custody

Rating: 2.25 /5

Custody Movie Review: This Naga Chaitanya film had interesting premise but let down by weak screenplay

custody tamil movie review

  • Custody released in theatres on May 12.
  • The movie is a Tamil-Telugu bilingual.
  • It is Naga Chaitanya's first action entertainer.

Release Date: 12 May, 2023

Custody, directed by Tamil director Venkat Prabhu, sees Telugu star Naga Chaitanya make his foray into action cinema. This is Venkat Prabhu’s first Telugu directorial and being a Telugu-Tamil bilingual, it had to appeal to both sets of audiences. Similar to other films that have released in recent times, Custody narrates a 48-hour episode in the life of police constable Shiva, played by Naga Chaitanya.

This movie is set in the 1990s and at the outset, we are shown a terrible incident where around 40 people die in a small town due to a gas cylinder blast. Then we meet Shiva, who lives in this town with his parents and sister, and who believes that human life is more important than anything else. This is evident when he stops the Chief Minister’s (Priya Mani) convoy to allow an ambulance to pass.

Meanwhile, the CM sends IG Nataraj (Sharath Kumar) to kill Raju before he reaches court. Things go haywire when Nataraj lands up at the police station and now Shiva is on a mission to not only marry his girlfriend but also produce Raju – alive – in court. Does he manage to achieve both these goals?

Custody has a very interesting premise that could have been an edge-of-the-seat thriller but the screenplay meanders all over the place. If the focus had been kept solely on the Shiva-Raju story and the chasing game, the movie would have been far more engaging. At the end of the day, the crux of this movie was how a constable saves the bad guy and the relationship both develop in the need to survive. However, this was marred by too many characters and sub-plots.

SEE I Custody trailer out. Naga Chaitanya as cop is on a mission to fight against injustice

The first half of the film spent far too much time in establishing Shiva, his family, Revathy and so on, that it becomes a little tedious. The romance portions dragged the film down and stalled the story, and the songs were unnecessary too. Music directors Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja are excellent musicians but, in this film, an excellent BGM would have elevated the film more.

It’s only when the action and chase scenes begin, that the pace of the film really picks up. Some of the fights were well taken like the underwater scenes and when they get caught in the large underground water pipes. The second half unfortunately has more lags than the first half. One didn’t feel any emotional connect to Jiiva’s story and it was unnecessary.

READ I Naga Chaitanya reveals he and Samantha have moved on, says he feels worse about third-party involvement for headlines

Coming to performances, Naga Chaitanya has played his role as a constable sincerely but it’s not easy to believe that he could be a constable. He’s good in the action scenes and perhaps should explore some exciting action scripts. Krithi Shetty delivers what is required of her as does Arvind Swami. Priya Mani shines in her small role as CM. Venkat Prabhu has used a lot of known faces from Tamil cinema but some like Sarath Kumar and Ramki were just not suitable for the film. The film may have been set in the late 1990s but the actors could have been present-day ones.

Custody is predictable but if the Shiva-Raju relationship/ story had been completely unlocked, it would have made for terrific viewing. Custody Movie Review

Dramas that unfold within a restricted time span with a high element of danger would make for a good substance to build a thriller. Film maker Venkat Prabhu who tasted success with this formula in Maanaadu has yet again deployed it in his recent project Custody. The drama is about a constable who is entwined in a situation in which he has to safeguard a ruthless criminal from a herd of henchmen who are after his life. Actor Naga Chaitanya makes his debut in Tamil cinema with his period action thriller drama Custody. Actress Krithi Shetty has played the female lead role in the entertainer. So, how has the thriller film Custody come out? Will it help establish a bankable lead hero image for actor Naga Chaitanya in Tamil cinema, and stretch the winning run of director Venkat Prabhu ? To know that let us get into the movie review.

Custody Movie Poster

Custody Movie Poster

The drama opens in 1996 to a bomb blast and cuts to 1998 where it follows the life of Siva (Naga Chaitanya), an upright young man who is employed as a constable in the police department. His sense of duty extends to the extent that he would not even flinch to halt the convoy of the chief minister of the state Dhakshayani (Priyamani), to let an ambulance pass. He is in a relationship with his childhood sweetheart Revathi (Krithi Shetty), who works as a driving institute instructor. Her parents are looking for a suitable bridegroom for her. Worried about being married off to someone else, she asks Siva to meet with her parents and ask for her hand in marriage. Siva obliges. Along with his father and mother he visits Revathi’s parents with a marriage proposal only to be rejected and insulted. A dejected Revathi rings him up later and tells him she cannot live without him and suggests that they elope and get married.

Siva along with a colleague headed out of the station. Unexpectedly, a speeding car bumps into their vehicle. Passengers of the car are a CBI officer George (Sampath Raj), who is escorting Raasu (Aravind Swamy), a criminal, to the court to get him to testify in a high-profile case against chief minister Dhakshayani. In a mishap Siva remands them. George tries to explain the scenario to Siva, but Raasu attempts to mislead him. By the time Siva learns the truth, the situation escalates and becomes chaotic making things more challenging to present Raasu in court. Siva takes it upon himself to aid George to produce Raasu before justice. Will Siva manage to outdo a horde of hooligans and present Raasu alive in front of a judge, is what makes the rest of the case.

Custody is the dearth of Venkat Prabhu’s bravura. It takes an ample amount of time to lure us into its world. For some odd reasons director Venkat Prabhu adopts a slow burn approach to establish the characters of his film. There are attempts from the director to document a few subtle social commentaries during this phase. The problem is, neither the writing nor the characters have layers in them to make for a gripping narrative which instantly incites a sense of banality in us. The poorly placed songs make things even worse. After the initial 30 odd minutes the film creates the impression as if it is about to take off. But it keeps playing out with predictability and dishes out exasperating events as cute and fun. For instance, Siva and Revathi are in an exigency of sorts, but on the pretext of being cute Revathi insists on going to a hotel just so she can have her favorite food.

Fortunately, the film received the much-required zeal with the entry of Aravind Swamy’s Raasu followed by Sarathkumar’s Natraj. It is characters like these that boost the film which otherwise would have completely lost its stream one hour into the film. Few exchanges between the cop and the criminal in his custody are interesting and leaves us wanting for more. The transition of their relationship from hostility to brotherhood is constructed well. But the film lacks a coherence to turn them into much more than just a momentary brilliance. To keep the audience invested, director Venkat Prabhu uses too many twists that deters the flow of the film. The much-hyped action piece lives up to the expectations. Credit to stunt choreographer Mahesh and the cinematographer for capturing the action that takes place in a narrow space.

Actor Naga Chaitanya just about managed to pull off his role. His stout physique makes him fit perfectly in the role of a cop. However, it is a bit tiring to watch the exaggerated mien of the actor throughout. Actor Aravind Swamy brings about his excellence to elevate his underwritten part. He puts on a great show. Actress Krithi Shetty’s character does not have a strong hold in the flow, and just jumps in and out of the proceedings. Nonetheless, the actress lives up to her role. Actress Priyamani makes her presence felt even in a short screen time. Literally except one or two gags, rest of actor Premgi Amaren’s jokes turn out to be a dud. Actor R Sarathkumar demands our attention with his towering screen presence. Actor Ramki makes an impact. Actress Jayasudha does justice to her role. Actor Sampath Raj delivers in his typical stereotypical role. Actor Y G Mahendran is as effective as usual. Actor Jayaprakash is functional. Actors Surya, Ravi Prakash, Annapoorna, Rajitha, Premi Viswanath, and Kadambari Kiran have all chipped in and have depicted their part well. Actors Jiiva, Anandi , Vaibhav, and Venkat Prabhu buck up the mood in cameo. The rest of the cast has delivered what was asked of them.

On the technical front, music directors Yuvan Shankar Raja and Ilaiyaraaja are clearly not at their best. But Yuvan Shankar Raja somewhat covers the ground with his background score that helps in shaping the thriller tone of the movie. Cinematographer S R Kathir has set up his camera at right spots . His visuals are colorful. Editor Venkat Raajen brings forth his editing prowess and enhances the work of his colleague with sharp scissor work.

On the whole, director Venkat Prabhu’s Custody is a trite thriller film that fluffs the narrative with too many red herrings to hold fast to the attention of the audience but fails at it utterly.

Custody , featuring Naga Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty in the lead, isn’t a typical fun-filled Venkat Prabhu film. That doesn’t mean that it is completely devoid of comedy as well.

It is a proper commercial entertainer with action taking precedence over comedy.

So, does the film work? Read the review to find out:

The story begins in 1996 in a seemingly unassuming fashion. A blast at a traffic intersection leaves several people dead.

Fast forward to 1998 and the focus shifts to Shiva (Naga Chaitanya), a conscientious brave man who works as a constable in the local police station.

Shiva’s girlfriend Revathi (Krithi Shetty) is a driving school instructor.

The two have been in love since their school days. Now, Krithi is worried that her parents might get her married off to someone else.

So, she insists that Shiva visit her home along with his parents to seek her hand in marriage.

Initially, Shiva hesitates to do so as he does not want to rush into marriage. However, on Revathi’s insistence, he does as he is asked.

Unfortunately, another suitor along with his family arrives at Revathi’s house at the same time. Things go out of hand as Shiva and his family members are insulted. They leave the place in a huff.

Meanwhile, Revathi is determined to spend her life with Shiva and calls him and Shiva — who is on night duty at the police station — decides to go to meet his girl.

One is a wanted criminal called Raasu (Arvind Swami) and the other is a CBI official (Sampath Raj) who has taken Raasu into custody.

The CBI official is about to present him as a witness in an important criminal case in Bangalore where the main accused is the Chief Minister (Priya Mani).

Without realising the gravity of the situation, Shiva arrests both men and lodges them in the station.

However, it is not long before both officials and goondas descend on the station to kill the CBI officer and release Raasu.

Shiva realises that it is the CBI officer who is on the side of the law and decides to stand by him. He disregards orders from his higher-ups and chooses to help the CBI officer.

How he helps him produce the suspect in court and gets him to testify is what the story of Custody is all about.

Venkat Prabhu’s mark missing

still from venkat prabhu custody movie

A still from Venkat Prabhu’s ‘Custody’. (Twitter)

To be fair, Custody is highly predictable and as a result, comes across as being boring and mundane.

Venkat Prabhu, who usually looks to tell stories in his funny way, seems to have departed from his usual style and has made this film.

He seems to have kept in mind the fans and image of Naga Chaitanya. Sadly, this works against the film.

Custody lacks the usual irreverent treatment of characters seen in Venkat Prabhu’s films. Also, the dialogues lack the punch they usually have.

It is not that the movie is completely devoid of humour or punch lines. Venkat Prabhu’s touch can be seen and enjoyed, but only occasionally.

Arvind swami steals the show.

More importantly, the director’s touch is not seen in the characterisation of Naga Chaitanya or Krithi Shetty. Nevertheless, it can be felt in Arvind Swami’s characterisation.

custody film poster

Arvind Swami, who plays Raasu, steals the limelight with his deadly one-liners. His timely retorts and his effortless acting are the only saving grace of Custody .

Naga Chaitanya is at sea in Custody . He doesn’t look tough enough to be considered a cop and soft enough to be considered a boy. He struggles to convey the intensity of a situation and often overcompensates.

Krithi Shetty looks pretty and does a reasonable job. While she fails to score in the initial comedy sequences, the actress scores handsomely in the sequences with Arvind Swami.

Priya Mani, who plays the Chief Minister, comes up with a very commendable performance. Dignified at first and vicious later on, Priya Mani handles all aspects of her character with considerable ease.

Sampath as the CBI officer and Sarath Kumar as police officer Natraj also play their parts to perfection.

Custody Movie Review:

Custody Movie Review:

Custody – tamil movie review.

custody tamil movie review

Good action, good narrative, great characters, and satisfying climax. Could have been shorter though.

Plot: fight or flight?

Shiva, a resolute police constable finds himself embroiled in the protection of a CBI officer transporting a criminal harboring incriminating evidence against high-ranking officials. As corrupt authorities and criminals pursue them relentlessly, a race against time ensues to deliver the criminal and expose the truth.

The film boasts tight writing with clever twists on familiar tropes. Director Venkat Prabhu, for instance, utilizes seemingly inconsequential scenes (for Tamil cinema), like a constable stopping the CM convoy for an ambulance, to establish character while he makes sure to deviate from the usual romantic subplots of Tamil cinema. (i.e. hero stops the convoy, and a woman who’s in the crowd falls in love with him.) This ingenuity extends to the film’s dialogue, stakes, and character development, all gradually unfolding without feeling rushed.

However, the film’s strength in writing is hampered by its pacing. A tighter edit, removing 30-40 minutes, would have bolstered its impact. Additionally, minor plot holes, such as a childhood friend needing a retelling of the protagonist’s past, disrupt the film’s flow. While the production value is commendable, a more focused narrative would have better served the film’s potential.

“Custody” boasts exceptional technical execution. S.R. Kathir’s masterful camerawork (particularly the impressive long take in the police station) seamlessly elevates the film’s atmosphere. Equally commendable is Rajeevan’s production design, meticulously recreating the period with authentic props, locations, and set design.

While the songs, despite contributions from Yuvan and Illayaraja, feel unnecessary and lack memorability. The background score, especially the character-specific themes, make it evident that Yuvan is one of the best in the game. The editing is sharp, maintaining a linear narrative except for one flashback. Special effects, particularly evident in the dam sequence, are well-integrated, reflecting strong collaboration between editor and director.

The well-coordinated stunts by Mathew Mahesh showcase style and impact, though some might find them overly stretched, especially when attempting to integrate narrative elements. Overall, “Custody” excels in its technical aspects, offering a visually immersive and tightly edited experience.

Character Analysis

custody tamil movie review

Chaitanya embodies steadfast resolve through his expressive features, particularly excelling when portraying righteous anger. However, his performance loses momentum outside of these moments.

Conversely, Kriti Shetty delivers a compelling portrayal of a young woman in love. Arvind Swami convincingly navigates his character’s complex arc, albeit with a familiar acting style. Supporting cast members, including Sampath, Priyamani, Sarathkumar, Jiiva, and Ravi Prakash, deliver well-rounded performances without unnecessary flourishes.

The film’s strength lies in its well-defined character motivations and arcs, a crucial element for any narrative. Every character’s actions seamlessly serve the larger story, with only one questionable choice – a seasoned assassin taking a risky long-distance shot. However, the director’s apparent pact with Premji, as he’s the only one who feels out of place in this narration. His jarringly self-referential scenes and excessive dialogue distract the audience from the overall flow.

Theme / Social Commentary

The film presents a clear-cut moral core : unwavering pursuit of truth and unwavering faith in the justice system . It advocates for perseverance in the face of adversity , even when the legal apparatus itself appears compromised. However, the optimistic assertion that “it’ll work out” simplifies the film’s message and avoids the complexities of navigating a potentially flawed system.

An engaging crime thriller, “Custody” is ultimately hampered by its excessive runtime. A tighter narrative, ideally around 90 minutes, would have elevated the film. However, it still manages to impress with its well-choreographed action sequences, compelling story, and well-developed characters. The film delivers a satisfying climax, leaving viewers with a sense of closure.

Naga Chaitanya teamed up with Tamil director Venkat Prabhu for his latest film Custody, which features a huge cast that includes Aravind Swamy and Priyamani, along with Krithi Shetty as the leading lady. The film has been released today, let’s see how it has turned out to be.

Shiva is a Police constable who becomes famous after he obstructs the CM. He has been in love with Krithi Shetty’s character since childhood and the two want to get married. In the meantime, Naga Chaitanya gets embroiled between the characters of Sampath Raj and Aravind Swamy, which sets Naga Chaitanya on a journey with Aravind Swamy. What is the conflict between the two characters and what is that journey, forms the rest of the story.

On-Screen Performances:

Naga Chaitanya delivers a fine performance in the role of an earnest cop. Looks wise, he has the demeanor to play a cop. He has mellowed down a bit to play this complex role. Aravind Swamy is a seasoned actor and he has delivered a decent performance as a criminal. Krithi Shetty has a limited role and she is alright.

Priyamani has also done an okay job with what she has been given. The rest of the supporting cast is alright.

Off-Screen Talents:

Venkat Prabhu is known for slick action thrillers. This film too retains his usual flavor. The narration is slow in the early stages and things pick up pace only after the conflict is revealed. In this film, however, the problem with his pacing has affected the film a lot, as the audience would lose interest in the movie after a certain point because the scenes unfolding are also not very interesting. The problem with Custody is that the director fails to present a compelling narrative.

Yuvan Shankar Raja and Ilayaraja’s background score and songs are not that remarkable, and are highly forgettable, something that is usually not expected from either of them and especially not when the two of them team up.

The production design of the film is good, and the cinematography is also good. The editing could have been so much better.

Plus Points:

  • A few action sequences
  • Production values

Minus Points:

  • Poor pacing
  • Weak narration
  • Overall script

Verdict: Naga Chaitanya has been very confident about Custody from day one, but the film is sub-par and fails to deliver. It is an outdated film that can be skipped altogether and has nothing to offer at all.

Custody Movie review: Not so great Tamil debut for Naga Chaitanya

Custody Movie

Naga Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty are pairing up again for their upcoming film, “Custody.”

Cast: Akkineni Naga Chaitanya, Krithi Shetty, Arvind Swami, Priyamani, Sarathkumar, Sampath Raj, Premgi Amaren, Vennela Kishore, Premi Vishwanath, and others

Writer and Director: Venkat Prabhu

Producers: Srinivasaa Chitturi

Music Director: Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja

Cinematographer: SR Kathir

Rating: 2.5/5

Naga Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty are pairing up again for their upcoming film, “ Custody .” This is their second collaboration after their previous successful film, “Bangarraju.” Famous Tamil director Venkat Prabhu is the director of the film. This film is a cop-action drama with an interesting plot line. The trailer gave a glimpse of the film’s action sequences, chases, and other elements too. The film hits the theatres and let’s see how it fares at box-office.

Constable Shiva (Naga Chaitanya), a small-town guy, is deeply in love with Revathi (Krithi Shetty). The girl’s parents do not approve of their love. One day Shiva arrests gangster Raju (Arvind Swami) and a CBI officer George (Sampath) accidentally. Shiva learns through the CBI officer that Raju needs to be produced in Bangalore court. But Raju has the support of CM Dakshyani (Priyamani) and the entire government. Determined, Shiva chooses to produce Raju in the court and starts fighting against all the odds. In this journey, Revathi too joins him. Did Shiva succeed in his attempt? What challenges did Shiva undergo to protect the truth forms the crux of the story.

The plot of “Custody,” directed by Venkat Prabhu is extremely thin. There isn’t much to the plot other than a constable and a rowdy having to work together to get to court on time. A number of Hollywood movies, including “Midnight Run” and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” come to mind. However, Venkat Prabhu has stated that the critically acclaimed Malayalam film “Nayattu” (2021) served as inspiration for him to make this film because he wanted to reframe the theme in a more commercial way.

But whatever the case may be, “Custody” fails to deliver more than a few fleeting thrills. The plot’s single-point drive runs out of fuel before arriving at its destination.

When Arvind Swamy’s character enters the spotlight, the film truly shines. This is provided, of course, that you ignore the customary romantic track between Naga Chaitanya and Krithi Shetty at the beginning. Fantastic work in the nearly half-hour episode preceding the intermission. Action episode set in a reservoir is not only exciting but also brings a freshness to the action scenes. The interval bang raises questions about who is on which side.

But the film loses its focus and becomes tedious in the second half due to the inclusion of numerous extraneous elements. The only thing you can think of at the film’s inevitable conclusion is that it could have benefited from being a little more concise. Venkat Prabhu, as a writer and director, shows realism and his mark of direction in the middle section, but he then goes off the rails. There is also no logic in setting the story in 1996.

On a whole, “Custody” is an action drama that is captivating in the middle act but drags in the third act. A more condensed narrative would have made more sense.

Performances

Naga Chaitanya playing Shiva fits the bill perfectly of a sincere and honest cop who doesn’t go overboard on the aggressive side. It makes it look like a close-to-real portrayal. Unfortunately, that’s the best thing about the part, as it lacks depth and misses big time on the emotional side or intensity. The character of Shiva doesn’t go beyond surface-level niceties. It isn’t elevated anywhere and looks like another casually done part with no impact. The realism in the presentation and also action without depth make it look flat and ineffective. It has a sincerity about it, but that’s it. Kriti Shetty gets another lacklustre role that fails to give anything memorable to her. She is neither utilised on the glamour side nor even her performance explored. And yet the character remains present throughout. It is an ordinary-looking part that ends in a similar vein and eventually turns out as another forgettable outing despite a lengthy screen time.

Aravind Swamy’s character appears to be very intriguing at first but by the end of the movie, we realize that it was poorly written. Priyamani, who plays the Chief Minister, Sarath Kumar as a rogue police officer, and Vennela Kishore as the groom, all get lot of screen time and did justice to their given roles. Goparaju Ramana, in a small but important role as Naga Chaitanya’s father, shines. The film also has cameo appearances from Ramky, Jeeva and Anandini.

Technicalities

Writer-director Venkat Prabhu did a below-par job with “Custody.” Venkat Prabhu got it wrong with the screenplay, and lost control over the entire second half. The film never recovers post the interval, and the proceedings from thereon are pretty dull. It was also said that the latter half would have edge-of-the-seat moments, but there were none. Given his track record and the kind of subjects Venkat Prabhu came up with, one would surely have good expectations, but the film doesn’t reach them at all.

It was surprising to see such mediocre work from the great Ilaiyaraaja and Yuvan Shankar Raja. The songs are pretty bad, and the background score is also not that great. Better BGM could have helped a few scenes. The cinematography by SR Kathir is neat. The editing is below par as the film feels a bit lengthy, especially due to the second half. The VFX works are shabby.
