The goal is to build a narrative of one’s day during this COVID19 pandemic through photographic documentation.

8 online meetups that are helping the creative community

Free places to connect with fellow creatives under lockdown.

For creatives who have long been working from home, the new world of lockdown has been relatively easy to adapt to. But that doesn't mean it's been without its problems. With everything to deal with from cancelled contracts and lost income to isolation and loneliness, it's not surprising that designers, illustrators and artists have been looking for new places to link up.

There are so many virtual communities springing up right now, often on a local or regional basis, that it would be impossible to list them all. But in this post, we've collected together eight online meetups that you may not be aware of. Some are long-running but have recently been made free, while others have been launched specifically in response to the lockdown. All of them offer a place to find like-minded souls and get support, advice and encouragement to help you through the crisis.

01. Just Us Collective

Set up in 2009 by freelance graphic designer Mark Luke Grant, The Just Us Collective is a non-profit community of illustrators and designers, formed to showcase creative talent and encourage networking and collaboration. They are currently building a community on Slack with past members, and have opened submissions for new ones too.

"Since lockdown, a lot of us are talking about what we've been doing to keep occupied," says Grant. "It’s a mixed bag, really: some are still quite busy; we have seen a lot of editorial illustration being commissioned, whereas others have been fairly quiet, taking the time to work on portfolio, passion projects or just taking some time out. We’ve also been talking about ideas to create an online exhibition and actively sharing inspiration and ideas."

02. On the Side

Launched last summer by web designer and podcast producer Si Jobling, On The Side is a collaborative community aimed at helping you focus on and finish your side projects. "It's slowly growing traction and has some lovely people who motivate each other with work, life and side projects," he says.

"The group has been specifically helpful over the past few months, when many people are lacking capacity, energy or enthusiasm; even uncertainty with their jobs," Jobling adds. "We seem to have bursts of conversations around these things, but tend to come back to our daily, weekly or monthly goals on side projects."

03. DevChat

Founded in 2016, DevChat describes itself as "a very friendly group of software developers who come together to solve problems and learn", and currently has more than 19,000 members. There are lots of channels within the main Slack group, with the big ones being #python (1,670+ members), #javascript (3,110+ members), #java (1,250+ members), and #webdev (2,320+ members).

Get the Creative Bloq Newsletter

Daily design news, reviews, how-tos and more, as picked by the editors.

"Since the lockdown, we've seen an increased number of new members and messages going up," says DevChat's Mustafa Abdelhai, "as well as an increased interest in working/meeting remotely."

And it's not just been about chatting, but also doing. "We've always wanted to organise a community hackathon," adds Abdelhai, "and were more motivated to do it after the lockdown began, to get people to communicate more and have something to do in their new downtime. We had more 250 participants and 19 submitted projects . In general, it is impacting our virtual life positively. Of course, Covid is a horrible thing, but I think we understand and embrace the value of the internet more than ever before because of it."

04. Studio Anorak Slack Channel

Studio Anorak is an independent kids' publishing house founded in 2006 by Cathy Olmedillas, formerly of '90s lifestyle bible The Face. At the start of lockdown, Olmedillas decided to set up a Slack channel, where every day from 4-6pm GMT, artists and illustrators can chat about their day, their fears, and share happy thoughts.

"I created the group to support the creative community, because although many of us are used to working from home, this forced isolation can make it feel a lot more lonely," says Olmedillas. "We meet every day from 4pm and each day has a theme, which could be anything from 'we love pens', to 'dressing during quarantine times: pyjamas? same dress, day-in day-out?'"

The group has also been involved in portfolio reviews and guest appearances, including children's author Chris Haughto, artist Dave Buonaguidi, and a child psychiatrist talking about the effects of lockdown on kids and adults. "Plus we've been sharing kids' vintage books, podcasts, and just generally chatting," adds Olmedillas. "To register, just email us with a link to your portfolio here ."

05. Corvid Community for Digital Artists

Yes, you read that right, and no: the Corvid Community for Digital Artists is nothing to do with COVID-19. In fact, it was launched over a year ago by The Jacky Winter Group , a global creative production and artist representation studio based in Melbourne, and 'corvid' is another word for crow. "Yeah, we know the name is not ideal at the moment," the group admits, "but we're already in too deep with Google Apps."

What is ideal, though, is that while you previously had to pay a monthly subscription to join the group, since March 27 it's been made free. And many visual artists have been taking advantage of the opportunity to network, socialise and get help and guidance.

"The discussions at the moment are really varied," says Jeremy Wortsman, director and founder of Jacky Winter and Corvid. "I think what people are enjoying most right now is our advice channel, where everyone is talking openly about pricing and negotiation and other sometimes thorny issues. It's a way for artists we don't represent to get direct access to me and the rest of our agents. It's a great way for us to be able to contribute at this stage, while also a way to demonstrate our skills for our other Corvid offerings: Companion and Consult."

06. Slack channel for agency owners

While there are many places for designers, illustrators and artists to meet up online, groups dedicated to company heads are a little thinner on the ground. Back in March, this prompted Ben Steers, the owner of Fiasco Design , to set up a Slack workspace for design agencies owners and directors to share information and resources, as well as new work opportunities for businesses who are struggling with impact of the pandemic.

"We’ve currently got more than 250 members," says Steers, "all agency owners or senior management. And it’s turned out to be a really positive space where individuals are able to have open, honest conversations about issues and challenges surrounding subjects such as remote working, team management, furloughing, and redundancies. As well as sharing resources – government policies and support etc – and new business opportunities, it’s a great illustration of the strength of the creative community and the willingness of people to pull together in these exceptional times."

If you'd like to get an invite to join the group, contact Steers via his Twitter account.

07. Slack group for illustrators

Back in March, illustrator Ben O'Brien, aka Ben the Illustrator, asked illustrators to join a private Slack group on Twitter. And as we reported at the time , within 24 hours he had gathered together a big community of illustrators from all over the world.

"I set up the group quite early on during the lockdown," says O'Brien now, "because I felt people needed a community to lean on; something focused on their profession to find answers and support from likeminded peers. There was a huge response to my first tweets, and the community has grown to around 650 illustrators as it stands.

"Ironically I personally haven't had as much time to use it as I'd hoped, mostly down to family time, home-schooling etc," O'Brien adds. "But I'm pleased to say that's it's growing organically, so no-one needs to direct the conversation, least of all me. The conversations are varied and positive: people looking for help with bureaucratic processes – applying for funding during the pandemic etc; showing and critiquing work; and sharing opportunities. If anyone is interested in joining the group then they just need to send me their email address, either by a DM on Twitter or via email: [email protected]."

08. Booooooom! Slack workspace

Based in Vancouver, Booooooom is a global arts and culture platform fostering a community of tomorrow’s talent. Back in March, they decided to make their private Slack Community free for all, for the foreseeable future.

"For the past couple years the  Booooooom Slack  has been a place for our paying members to ask for advice, share things that are inspiring them, and get feedback on work," says editor-in-chief Jeff Hamada. "I'd love it if all of this self quarantining and social distancing ended up being the catalyst for an explosion of vibrant creative communities and support networks online.

"There have been all kinds of discussions happening on the group since lockdown began," Hamada adds. "A lot of people are obviously sharing their work, but also random creatives links they find. The big discussion I started was about good simple recipes as we're all stuck at home a lot these days. Got so many new ones to try out!"

15 of the Best Online Writing Communities for Aspiring Authors

As enjoyable and fulfilling as writing can be, the truth is that it’s often a solitary endeavor. While we might romanticize the focused artist typing away while imaginary worlds and narratives swirl inside their minds — authors know the truth: writing can get lonely. And moreover, when you’re working on a one-person project, it can be hard to remain motivated and accountable. That’s where writing communities come in.

Writing communities are the perfect place to find answers to your writing questions and to discuss the ins and outs of the writing life with people who actually understand what you’re talking about.

So, if you are tired of listening only to the voices in your head, take a look at our list of top online writing communities. (And if you're hungry for more, check out our more exhaustive list of the very best writing websites !)

You left out taylz.com. It’s truly free. They are not going to give you a rubbish service to make you join their pay site because they have no pay site. Your story can be 8,000 words. They are not going to force you into flash fiction of 3,000 words. One critique out, one critique in: no mucking about with “karma” or critiquing 5+ stories to get one critique. The great new idea whose time has come! And it’s British, not American.

Reedsy, thank God you are here! I want to ask a question to other authors or self publishers here: I have been approached by OmniScriptum to publish my books (research) with them. I cannot find much about this company online, so wondered if anyone has published with them recently? Thanks Reedsy in anticipation. Marie

Hi Marie! Sounds potentially very shady to me. If you haven't already, check out our post on predatory companies in publishing. One of the rules of thumb is that if a publisher contacts you first, be very wary. I just did 20 seconds worth of Googling and found some people who had a bad experience.

I am a member of illuminate, which is a group designed around supporting women who want to share their stories but don't know how. The majority of us write non-fiction essays and memoirs, but we have a few poets and fiction writers in the mix as well. The overall goal is to support each other, especially through those harder moments of not wanting to write, or not knowing where to start. There are monthly themes and prompts, a weekly exercise inside the Facebook group, and cross-sharing of what we're working on. My favorite feature is the expert review, where you can submit any piece you're working on each month and you'll get quality feedback from one of the editors that manage the group. This group is perfect for anyone who is just getting started writing.

I only recommend Scribophile if you enjoy being coerced into groupthink. If you hope to get meaningful critique that will help you, look elsewhere. The critiques here are mostly SPAG, and it's forbidden to discuss your work on the main forums, except in the broadest, vaguest way.

Why I Haven’t Joined a Creative Writing Group (Yet)

  • 5 Comments on Why I Haven’t Joined a Creative Writing Group (Yet)

After years of creative writing grad school, I’m not jumping on the chance to join a creative writing group. It’s because both class workshops and group discussions have THIS in common.

Subscribe to KLWightman.com Blog Upper Button

My interest is sparked when I see the words creative writing . It’s probably the euphoria wearing off from years of undergrad and grad school when I thought I could be a successful author after writing a first draft of anything simply because I wanted to be.

Or it could be from my middle school days when I’d flip through the piles of empty notebooks, some bought, some received, dreaming up what I could write but never picking up a pen.

And I’ve come across the words creative writing lately. I’m still new to my city and I’m always looking for a new group or event to attend so that I can boost my friendship numbers up.

It’s a slow process.

Among the wine tasting and knitting circle events, I can quickly spot the creative writing groups, and my heart is lifted. For only a beat.

I’d like to join a creative writing group that discusses topics like publishing, author promotion, editing vs. revising , plot structure , and industry trends. Like looking for a unicorn, I’m overly hopeful that I’ll find one in my neck of the woods.

Instead, I find a creative writing group or two that focuses on sharing work and critiquing it. While it’s only a short drive away, I won’t be attending any of these meetings.

There’s nothing wrong that these groups exist. They just don’t work for me.

You’d think after years of workshopping my work that I’d want to get back in the writer circle game. But I don’t. In fact, it’s the biggest reason I don’t miss my undergrad years.

Ask my sister. That list is long.

The reason why I don’t attend creative writing groups is because the writing workshop method simply doesn’t work.

At least, not for me.

Say that I did go. I (hypothetically) read five pages of chapter seven from my novel-in-progress and the group gives me “I like” and “I dislike” feedback.

And I could go all day telling you my opinion on feedback .

There are many things wrong with this scenario, but I’ll only list two:

  • I don’t care whether or not my audience likes or dislikes something. I care whether or not what is happening in the writing works.
  • How can an audience judge a piece of writing that is only a segment of a larger work? That’s like handing an book publishing editor five pages and expecting them to give big-picture strategy on the entire novel.

The only way this group could constructively work is if I brought in a five-page story to analyze. That way, the audience has all the writing to critique.

But it’s still a critique session. It’s not a let’s-brainstorm-together-a-better-way-to-strengthen-your-story session. We’re still using “I dislike” statements with demands on how to change it (sorry, I think we say “giving advice” here) without collaborating on solutions.

The concept is very negative and leaves the writer depleted. Chances are, the writer discontinues revising the work and shoves that story in an already-cluttered drawer.

It’s also not a fun experience as a member of the editorial audience. My legitimate questions about the piece (not my personal reading preference) get drowned out by “I don’t like this” and “I don’t like that.”

There is still hope. That is, if the creative writing group is willing to change their method.

Teamwork Quote by Margaret Carty

Instead of bombarding the writer with your personal opinions, make the workshop about the work. Make it a brainstorm session. Ask questions about the characters, the plot, the scenery, the motives. Ban “I like” and “I dislike” statements.

Only then is it really a group. We join groups because we want to be part of a team, but we can only be a team if we feel like all the players have good intent. If we stop the judging and pump up the collaboration, the creative writing group could be quite a beautiful thing.

What do you think? Do you agree with the creative writing group method? Share your opinions below.

I think you’ve highlighted the issues I too have with writing groups. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who feels this way.

I must have hit the jackpot of writing groups. I am a newb, though, so take that into consideration. While this writing group I’ve joined does not have group sessions that I know of, it does have workshops and something called “show and grow your prose”, where you can submit 5-6pages of a manuscript, short story, etc. During that event, an experienced, educated person critiques the work in front of an audience after you read it (it’s displayed on a screen). It’s a humbling experience, but the feedback that was received was excellent. It was not about the story and what they liked and didn’t like, but about sentence structure, punctuation, POV, etc. I considered joining one of those critique groups through another writer’s group, but now I’m wondering if it’d be worth it.

I’m not a fan.

Ressiliency Overview-1

Resiliency Grants

$255,000 to 38 Organizations

Thanks to an American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)  in 2022, the Arts Council awarded 38  small-budget nonprofit arts organizations ( under $750k ) with operational support funding for financial recovery, to boost staffing levels + create future sustainability. Grants ranged from $3,000 - $15,000 for a total of $255,000.

Artist Corps (2)-1

New Haven Artist Corps Grants and Mentorship

$125,000 to 12 Artists

The Artist Corps program is for individual artists who are interested in creating projects and initiatives that directly impact New Haven City. The Artist Corps is not just about receiving funding, it's about building non-cash resources (such as connecting people across networks, identifying pipeline opportunities, and meeting more residents through the arts) in order to create a solid foundation for artists to be operationally sound and successful in seeing their art at the forefront of the community. Therefore, selected artists gather + work together as a cohort with support from a team of facilitators.

Creative Sector-2

Creative Sector Relief Fund

$335,380 to 436 people and projects

Launched in March 2020 in partnership with the City of New Haven's Department of Arts and Culture and Tourism, the initial intent of our Creative Sector Relief Fund was to quickly distribute financial assistance to low-income creatives and small-budget arts institutions most impacted by COVID-19.

The Fund was relaunched in 2021 with a new focus on economic and racial justice by supporting Black, Brown, and Indigenous artists with unrestricted $10k grants.

Arts Admins of Color-1

Arts Admins of Color Fund

$17,000 to 9 creative administrators

The Arts Administrators of Color Fund launched in 2021 thanks to support from the Avangrid Foundation helps to advance the careers of Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian American, and Pacific Islander individuals working in the arts industry. Eligible arts administrators, which we define very broadly, can request funding for professional development activities.

Past 2

Past Grants

From over a million dollars in Racial Equity and Creative Healing (REACH) Grants to the Cultural Vitality Fund, we have a track record of getting funds to vital community projects.

Take a look at some of our past grantmaking initiatives and how they have impacted our local communities.

Ecoworks CT is a social enterprise niche recycler that reduces waste while supporting the arts. As Connecticut's only Creative Reuse Center, we provide low cost rescued art supplies, have a mini maker space with use of our tools, and generate micro-income for 30+ consignors by showcasing the work of creatives in our storfront gallery, the reBoutique. We teach creative reuse techniques throughout the greater New Haven area, paying stipends to teaching artists. We share surplus materials with other partner organizations, organize community crafting for causes and source materials for artists' specific projects at their request.

"I...love to be sustainable and use things that would have been thrown away, and show people how beautiful they can be", Nadine Nelson, Artist-in-Residence 2022-2023

"The funds we secured from the Arts Council have truly had such a significant impact on our programming and opportunities for youth, trainees, and employees.

We were able to partner with RiseUp in October and pay 2 CT based artists to create a mural at one of our gardens in the South Hill. Members from our team joined with RiseUp, EMERGE Inc, and the neighborhood for a paint along day when the mural was complete and had so much fun."

#ThaTeam Podcast

"Arts Council’s Arts Admins of Color grant was a gift that we couldn’t be more thankful for. This specific grant was a seed sown for #ThaTeam Podcast to travel to Atlanta, GA for the Black Podcast Festival in 2022. This opportunity helped us to elevate our craft, network with other podcasters across the country and enjoy what we love to do.

It also allowed us to be able to take one of our podcast students with us on this journey so they can truly see where podcasting can take them in the long run. From this specific grant to the REACH grant, the Arts Council has made our shift from podcasters to youth educators/mentors what it is today and we couldn’t be more thankful."

Music Haven

Music Haven

The Resiliency Grant allowed Music Haven to not only sustain but to scale up operations in the aftermath of the pandemic as we returned to full-capacity, in-person programming.

Music Haven creates an inclusive community for young people to learn, play, and express themselves through tuition-free classical music lessons and ongoing mentoring with world-class musicians. At the heart of our model is the relationship between teacher and student, and the relationships between the young musicians, themselves — they learn not only from the members of the string quartet, but also from the foundations of chamber music: listening to each other, working as a team, communicating through music, and dedication and focus in service of creating something beautiful together. Through music, they build community, develop resilience and self-confidence, and experience collective struggle and success.

Steve Roberts ArtSpace

Steve Roberts uses his love of skateboarding and food to create social connection. A native a of New Haven, Connecticut, he began skateboarding at 13 years old. After graduating from James Hillhouse High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College. A 4 year member of the men’s basketball team, he also began work as a community organizer at RIC.  While in Providence, he began working in kitchens, where his passion and appreciation for food was nourished. After moving back to New Haven in 2016, he continued to work in restaurants around New Haven including Zinc and ROIA.

In 2017, he started the Push To Start Skate Program, which uses skateboarding to build community, provide opportunity, and foster civic engagement with the youth of New Haven. The program started in the parking lot behind Stetson Library but has expanded to the Scantlebury Skatepark. Steve, along with fellow New Haven resident, J. Joseph, helped coordinate the construction of the Scantlebury Skatepark as a part of their ongoing Skate Haven (formally Finding A Line:New Haven) project. The Skate Haven bowl, a community sourced, interactive art installation is the most recent FAL project.

Steve is looking forward to including skateboarders in New Haven’s plans for public space, and using skateboarding as a tool for common good and social change.
