Case Study 1: When an object follows a circular path at a constant speed, the motion of the object is called uniform circular motion. The word “uniform” refers to the speed, which is uniform (constant) throughout the motion. Suppose an object is moving with uniform speed v in a circle of radius R Since the velocity of the object is changing continuously in direction, the object undergoes acceleration. Let us find the magnitude and the direction of this acceleration. Thus, the acceleration of an object moving with speed v in a circle of radius R has a magnitude V2/R and is always directed towards the center. This is why this acceleration is called centripetal acceleration (a term proposed by Newton). A thorough analysis of centripetal acceleration was first published in 1673 by the Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) but it was probably known to Newton also some years earlier. “Centripetal” comes from a Greek term that means ‘center-seeking’. Since v and R are constant, the magnitude of the centripetal acceleration is also constant. However, the direction changes pointing always toward the center. Therefore, centripetal acceleration is not a constant vector. We can express centripetal acceleration ac in terms of angular speed as

Case Study 2: We consider the motion of a projectile. An object that is in flight after being thrown or projected is called a projectile. Such a projectile might be a football, a cricket ball, a baseball or any other object. The motion of a projectile may be thought of as the result of two separate, simultaneously occurring components of motion. One component is along a horizontal direction without any acceleration and the other is along the vertical direction with constant acceleration due to the force of gravity. It was Galileo who first stated this independency of the horizontal and the vertical components of projectile motion in his Dialogue on the great world systems.

Horizontal range of a projectile:  The horizontal distance traveled by a projectile from its initial position (x = y = 0) to the position where it passes y = 0 during its fall is called the horizontal range, R. It is the distance traveled during the time of flight T f . Therefore, the range

Case study – 1.

Boyle’s law is a gas law which states that the pressure exerted by a gas (of a given mass, kept at a constant temperature) is inversely proportional to the volume occupied by it. In other words, the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional to each other as long as the temperature and the quantity of gas are kept constant. For a gas, the relationship between volume and pressure (at constant mass and temperature) can be expressed mathematically as follows.

P ∝ (1/V)    Where P is the pressure exerted by the gas and V is the volume occupied by it. This proportionality can be converted into an equation by adding a constant, k.

Charles law states that the volume of an ideal gas is directly proportional to the absolute temperature at constant pressure. The law also states that the Kelvin temperature and the volume will be in direct proportion when the pressure exerted on a sample of a dry gas is held constant. Charles law and Boyle’s law applied to low density gas only. The total pressure of a mixture of ideal gases is the sum of partial pressures. This is Dalton’s law of partial pressures.

Where, n is number of molecules per unit volume, m is mass and v 2 is mean squared speed. Though we choose the container to be a cube, the shape of the vessel really is immaterial.

The average kinetic energy of a molecule is proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas; it is independent of pressure, volume or the nature of the ideal gas. This is a fundamental result relating temperature, a macroscopic measurable parameter of a gas (a thermodynamic variable as it is called) to a molecular quantity, namely the average kinetic energy of a molecule. The two domains are connected by the Boltzmann constant and given by E =  k b T.

Where k b is Boltzmann constant having value of 1.38*10 -23 joule per Kelvin.

We have seen that in thermal equilibrium at absolute temperature T, for each translational mode of motion, the average energy is ½ Kb T . The most elegant principle of classical statistical mechanics (first proved by Maxwell) states that this is so for each mode of energy: translational, rotational and vibrational. That is, in equilibrium, the total energy is equally distributed in all possible energy modes, with each mode having an average energy equal to ½ k B T . This is known as the law of equipartition of energy. Accordingly, each translational and rotational degree of freedom of a molecule contributes ½ k B T to the energy, while each vibrational frequency contributes 2 × ½ k B T = k B T, since a vibrational mode has both kinetic and potential energy modes.

SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY

Monatomic Gases: The molecule of a monatomic gas has only three translational degrees of freedom. Thus, the average energy of a molecule at temperature T is (3/2) kBT . The total internal energy of a mole of such a gas is U = (3/2) RT.

The molar specific heat at constant volume c v is given by

C v = dU/dT = (3/2) R

For an ideal gas,

C p – C v = R

Where C p is the molar specific heat at constant pressure. Thus, C P = (5/2) R

The ratio of specific heats IS γ= c p /c v = 5/3.

Diatomic Gases: a diatomic molecule treated as a rigid rotator, like a dumbbell, has 5 degrees of freedom: 3 translational and 2 rotational. Using the law of equipartition of energy, the total internal energy of a mole of such a gas is U = (5/2) RT.

C v = dU/dT = (5/2) R

Where C p is the molar specific heat at constant pressure. Thus, C P = (7/2) R

The ratio of specific heats IS γ( for rigid diatomic)= c p /c v = 7/5.

For non rigid diatomic molecules they have additional mode of vibrations therefore

γ= c p /c v = 9/7

Case Study/Passage Based Questions:

Question 1:

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.

Every matter is made up of tiny particles. These particles are so tiny that they can’t be seen with naked eyes.

The three characteristics shown by particles of matter are as follows:

(i) There are small voids between particles in a matter. This characteristic is the concept behind the solubility of a substance in other substances.

(ii) Particles of matter show continuous random movements, that is they possess kinetic energy. The spreading of ink in a beaker of glass, smell of agarbattis, etc. are few illustrations that show the movement of particles of a substance.

(iii) The particles of matter attract each other with a force called interparticle force of attraction. Read the given passage carefully and give the answer of the following questions:
