Breathtaking modernity
The fifth-generation luxury SUV takes the Land Rover brand’s modernist design philosophy to the next level, with a contemporary interpretation of its trademark profile to create an incredible design statement. It continues to lead, bringing breathtaking modernity, aesthetic grace and sophistication to the latest flagship.
The New Range Rover is a vehicle with a peerless character, from the impeccable restraint of its exterior to the flawless tranquil sanctuary of its cabin. Informed by creative intellect and a desire for perfection, it doesn’t follow fashion or trend, but by a modernist design philosophy, combined with over 50 years of evolution, it is quite simply the most desirable Range Rover ever created.
Prof Gerry McGovern OBE
Chief creative officer, jaguar land rover.
The New Range Rover is defined by three lines that can trace their origins back through the generations; the falling roofline, strong waistline and rising sill line. These trademark features combine with a characteristically short front overhang and a distinctive new boat tail rear – complete with practical split tailgate – to create an elegant profile that conveys peerless presence of the Range Rover.
The unbroken waistline showcases the Land Rover brand’s attention to detail as the rounded edge of the door meets the glass in a simple, clean finish thanks to a specially engineered hidden waist finisher. The design-enabling technology combines with flush glazing, hidden-until-lit lighting and precise detailing to create the impression that the vehicle has been milled from solid.
The luxurious interior is underpinned by modern, intuitive and relevant technologies, designed to work harmoniously with the finest materials and wellbeing innovations to create a calm sanctuary for all occupants – turning every trip into an experience to savor.
The exterior color palette elevates the elegant proportions and clean surfaces of the New Range Rover while the interior options are more sustainable, responsible and progressive than ever. Customers have a wider choice of materials and finishes, including innovative textiles and tactile Ultrafabrics™ with a continuation of the Land Rover brand’s pioneering relationship with Kvadrat™ – Europe’s leading manufacturer of premium textiles.
HERO FILM: INTRODUCING THE NEW RANGE ROVER AND RANGE ROVER SV
Peerless refinement
The New Range Rover makes every journey an occasion to be remembered, combining advanced technology with modern luxury to deliver peerless refinement for every occupant, including those in the new optional third-row seats. By eliminating unwanted noises, vibrations and distractions – and reducing the cognitive load on the driver and passengers – occupants will arrive at their destination feeling refreshed.
Advanced speaker technology builds on the fundamental refinement provided by the MLA-Flex body architecture to deliver serene cabin calmness – ensuring passengers enjoy a first-class experience. It uses the 1,600W Meridian™ Signature Sound System (not available on SE; standard on Autobiography and First Edition models) to create one of the quietest vehicle interiors on the road, with additional 20W speakers in the four main headrests for the most immersive sound experience.
Included with the Meridian™ Signature Sound System, the third-generation Active Noise Cancellation system monitors wheel vibrations, tire noise and engine sounds transmitted into the cabin and generates a cancelling signal, which is played through the system’s 35 speakers. These include a pair of 60mm diameter speakers in the headrests for each of the four main cabin occupants, which create personal quiet zones similar to the effect when using high-end headphones.
The Range Rover was the first luxury SUV to feature Electronic Air Suspension in 1992. The New Range Rover continues this pioneering approach with Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension that uses eHorizon Navigation data to read the road ahead and prime the suspension to provide appropriate responses.(7)
The intelligent technology also works in conjunction with the Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist to smooth out body movements resulting from sudden changes in speed.(7_ Fully independent suspension underpins the luxurious ride and features the Land Rover brand’s first ever five-link rear axle, which isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever using advanced air springs.
The New Range Rover is also the first Land Rover vehicle to feature optional Power Assisted Doors – available at 2023 model year – with integrated hazard detection and anti-pinch features, which enhance its Soft Door Close capability and ensure every trip begins and ends with effortless refinement and sophistication. All four passenger doors are power assisted – also controlled via the Pivi Pro(6) screen – for elegant entry and exit, including at angles of up to 10 degrees while off-road. Advanced hazard detection means the doors can automatically pause until the sweep of the door is cleared(7). The practical two-piece split tailgate that has been a Range Rover hallmark since 1970 is updated for 2022, with a series of new technologies providing greater versatility and convenience.
Inside, the new optional Versatile Loadspace Floor protects luggage and enhances convenience. Its clever floor panel can be raised forward, across the width of the load area around its mid-point, forming a partition to contain smaller items and keep them within easy reach when unloading. It can also pivot backwards along its leading edge to serve as a backrest when using the lower tailgate as outdoor seating. The new optional Tailgate Event Suite takes the Versatile Loadspace Floor backrest concept to new heights, combining additional lighting, audio features and tailored leather cushions to create the perfect vantage point for outdoor relaxation.
Five-seat models debut a new Auto-Folding Loadspace Cover. Combining the practicality of a rigid cover with the convenience of a retractable design, it elegantly retreats when the upper tailgate is opened to provide unrestricted access to the load area, without opening the lower tailgate.
Seamless technology
The New Range Rover maintains its rich bloodline of pioneering innovation with a suite of technologies designed to effortlessly enhance convenience, efficiency, refinement and safety. The latest Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0) on Land Rover vehicles, is the enabler-in-chief and includes Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates for more than 70 electronic modules, meaning the New Range Rover will constantly evolve, improve and remain up to date as it matures.
The New Range Rover revolutionizes the in-car experience with seamlessly integrated Amazon Alexa(1). Using intuitive natural voice commands goes one step beyond touchscreen or button interfaces in helping reduce cognitive load, providing a sense of effortless modern luxury. In this way, Alexa capabilities allow customers to manage everything from favorite infotainment features and music track selection to navigation or phone contacts – all while keeping their hands on the wheel, and eyes on the road.8
Alexa(1) voice AI is embedded within the New Range Rover, so users experience seamless interactivity and next-level convenience. Alexa capabilities also allow customers to check the news, weather and for any scheduled meetings using simple voice commands.8 The system can even turn on your lights at home and connect to other Alexa-enabled devices.
Alexa(1) works in addition to Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Wireless Android Auto™ and can be initiated either by saying “Alexa” or pressing the Alexa button on the central touchscreen 4 . It does not need a phone or external device to operate – only details of a customer’s Amazon account and an internet connection – while wireless charging for Qi compatible smartphones keeps devices topped up.
SiriusXM with 360L(3) debuts on 2022 Range Rover, offering an extensive and personalized radio experience on the road. The advanced in-car technology guides users through the largest in-car catalogue of SiriusXM channels, shows and exclusive content for a ride that's unique to the driver. Users will enjoy a variety of ad-free music, plus sports, news and talk — and for the first time, experience SiriusXM’s on-demand content, ad-free personalized Pandora stations and curated recommendations for each vehicle.
The New Range Rover combines supreme on-road and all-terrain capability with electrified propulsion and new levels of connected capability. In the quest for comfort, we have been obsessed with human science and understanding brain activity to minimize cognitive impact and ensure these advanced technologies work in absolute harmony, creating a truly effortless driving experience. It’s an engineer’s duty to make people’s lives better, and that’s exactly what the New Range Rover will do for you.
Nick Rogers
Executive director, product engineering, jaguar land rover.
THE NEW RANGE ROVER SWB
The New Range Rover elevates the Land Rover brand’s award-winning Pivi Pro infotainment technology6 with its largest ever touchscreen. The 13.1-inch curved, floating screen embodies the architectural lightness of the interior with a minimalist frame design. It provides intuitive control of all the major vehicle functions, using the latest consumer technology to deliver a smartphone-inspired interface, allied to convenient hard switches for the climate control.
Pivi Pro(6) works in harmony with an elegant new semi-floating 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, which features new high-definition graphics based around a three-panel layout that intuitively reflects the design of the Pivi Pro homescreen. Customers can choose from a variety of configurations, including a conventional analogue layout, using the steering wheel controls.
For the first time in a Land Rover vehicle, the central display will provide haptic feedback when customers touch and press the screen. Allowing users to feel a positive confirmation without the need to glance at the screen, it reduces the need to look away from the road and makes Pivi Pro even more intuitive(6).
Rear passengers can enjoy a new optional Rear Seat Entertainment system, which provides adjustable 11.4-inch HD touchscreens mounted on the rear of the front seatbacks. They can be operated independently and support the connection of most devices with an HDMI port, while using Wi-Fi hotspot9 capability means rear-seat passengers can enjoy smart TV entertainment on the move. The available eight-inch Rear Seat Touchscreen Controller mounted in the center armrest of Executive Class Rear Seats provides quick and intuitive control for the perfect seating position, elevating the luxurious rear-seat experience.
New Maneuvering Lights help drivers complete low-speed maneuvers in dimly lit surroundings with complete confidence, by creating a blanket of light around the perimeter of the vehicle, working with the 3D Surround Camera system to provide maneuverability(7).
Serene capability and composure
The flagship of the Land Rover family represents the pinnacle of refined capability thanks to advanced hardware and software systems working in complete harmony, enabled by the new MLA-Flex body architecture. This unrivalled breadth of dynamic capability is governed by the brand’s Integrated Chassis Control – a single control system for a suite of advanced technologies that tailor the vehicle dynamics to suit every mile of every journey, to pre-emptively and reactively fine-tune the driving characteristics.
The New Range Rover combines advanced hardware with a pioneering toolkit of digital technologies and software, all enabled by our advanced electrical architecture – moving Range Rover from a mechanical world to a mechatronic ecosystem that delivers an intuitive drive. Our new Integrated Chassis Control system is a prime example of this philosophy and co-ordinates a suite of predictive and reactive technologies, that make this the most comfortable and agile Range Rover ever produced.
Rory O’Murchu
Vehicle line director, jaguar land rover.
Every New Range Rover features All-Wheel Steering for an effortless drive with heightened stability at speed and improved maneuverability at low speeds, ensuring it is equally at home on the open road and negotiating tight urban streets 7 .
The electrically operated rear axle provides up to seven degrees of steering angle and, at low speeds, turns out-of-phase of the front wheels, giving the New Range Rover a turning circle of 36 feet – the smallest of any Land Rover vehicle. At higher speeds the rear axle turns in phase with the front wheels for enhanced stability and comfort.
The New Range Rover is also the first Land Rover vehicle to feature Dynamic Response Pro. The powerful new active 48-volt electronic roll control system is faster-acting and more efficient than a hydraulic set-up, with a torque capacity of over 1,000 lb-ft fed into the rollover protection system to keep body movements under control7.
Fully independent air suspension isolates the cabin from surface imperfections more effectively than ever, for serene composure. It combines air springs volumes with twin-valve dampers – all managed by in-house-developed Adaptive Dynamics control software7.
The intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) transmission is controlled by the Land Rover brand’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system, which monitors grip levels and driver inputs 100 times a second to predictively distribute torque between the front and rear axles, and across the rear axle, for optimum traction on and off-road 7 .
Every Range Rover also features an Active Locking Rear Differential. This optimizes traction from the rear axle during cornering, on slippery surfaces and during off-road wheel articulation, delivering enhanced capability and driver confidence7.
All of this technology feeds into the Land Rover brand’s award-winning Terrain Response® 2 system, which harnesses the various chassis systems to automatically provide the perfect settings for the surroundings, from a choice of six driving modes, to minimize driver workload across various terrains. Alternatively, the driver can select the most appropriate setting manually or, use Configurable Terrain Response® to create a bespoke chassis set-up7.
Electrified efficiency
The New Range Rover maintains its compelling combination of effortless performance and peerless refinement with a comprehensive line-up of advanced six- and eight-cylinder powertrains. Spearheading the Land Rover brand’s Reimagine strategy, a pure-electric model will join the family in 2024, bringing full-time zero tailpipe emissions driving to the Range Rover for the first time.
Available at 2023 model year, the new extended-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) combines the inherent refinement of the Land Rover brand’s inline six-cylinder Ingenium engine with a 38.2kWh lithium-ion battery – with usable capacity of 31.8kWh – and a 105kW electric motor integrated with the transmission. Together, the powertrain provides up to 62 miles10 of near-silent pure-electric driving.
The 434hp PHEV can reach up to 87mph5 without the use of the gasoline engine allowing customers to enjoy pure-electric driving for most journeys in town and country. The clever packaging of the battery, beneath the vehicle and within the wheelbase, ensures both luggage space and all-terrain capability are uncompromised.
The use of advanced eHorizon navigation data also allows the hybrid system to optimize energy usage across a journey, to provide a peaceful arrival at a destination on electric power, while also optimizing EV usage.
The six-cylinder Ingenium engine features the latest 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The system’s clever belt-integrated starter motor ensures more responsive and refined operation of the stop-start system and provides extra assistance to the engine when accelerating.
Exquisite personalization
The New Range Rover SV will provide an exquisite interpretation of Range Rover luxury and personalization, giving customers even more scope to create a truly individual vehicle with a choice of exclusive design themes, details and material choices from SV.
This hand-crafted model will be the first Land Rover vehicle to carry the new ceramic SV roundel and simplified naming strategy – known simply as SV. The SV roundel represents the distillation of Special Vehicle Operations design and engineering passion for modern luxury, performance and capability. The SV roundel will identify all new Land Rover vehicles launched by Special Vehicle Operations in the future.
Special Vehicle Operations exists to amplify the core characteristics of Land Rover vehicles, obsessing over every detail with a passion for quality. In the case of Range Rover, that means injecting even more luxury into every part of the car. With more choice than ever before, our customers will be able to create a new Range Rover SV that truly reflects their personality, their dreams, their desires. That is how we interpret modern luxury.
Michael van der Sande
Managing director, special vehicle operations.
Both Standard and Long Wheelbase body designs – including a five-seat LWB configuration for the first time – are available with specially curated SV Serenity and SV Intrepid design themes, which introduce two-tone front-to-rear contrasting colorways to Range Rover. Exclusive materials include lustrous plated metals, smooth ceramics, intricate mosaic marquetry and soft near-aniline leather, as well as sustainable non-leather Ultrafabrics™.
The sumptuous new SV Signature Suite option on LWB models epitomizes the heightened luxury and craftsmanship of Range Rover SV, providing a peerless travelling environment for its most discerning customers. Its uniquely cosseting seats feature 24-way adjustment with massage functionality, while an elegant electrically deployable Club Table rises theatrically from the fixed full-length center console on beautifully engineered supports to provide a convenient workspace when required.
The Range Rover SV will be available with the refined new 523hp twin turbocharged V8 powertrain.
New quality benchmark
The New Range Rover has been designed, developed and engineered in the UK and, during this process, Land Rover has filed no fewer than 125 patents covering everything from its pioneering chassis technologies to its PHEV battery. Land Rover engineers used motorsport-derived simulation technology to put the vehicle through its paces in the virtual world more comprehensively and intensively than ever, completing more than 140,000 hours of computational analysis prior to physical testing.
A fleet of prototypes then embarked on a punishing global test and development program, taking in extreme temperatures ranging from the 100 ° F + heat of the desert to the -20 ° F cold of the Arctic.
The New Range Rover will be produced exclusively at the Solihull Manufacturing Facility in the UK, using a state-of-the-art production line housed in the building used to produce early Series Land Rover vehicles. The historic building is the spiritual home of Land Rover and its reimagining as a new, ultra-modern center for Range Rover production showcases the way the company protects its heritage.
The New Range Rover is available to order now, priced from $104,0002 in the U.S. Find out more here: LandRoverUSA.com

The New Range Rover Is Fabulous
Now in its fifth generation, the Range Rover remains a standard-bearing SUV, though oddly, it's far better with a straight-six than the V-8.
It's hard to know where to start with the new Range Rover. After all, this is only the 5th all-new one in more than 50 years. This is a big deal.
The new Range Rover continues a march upmarket that began shortly after the original arrived—it doesn't really compete with, say, the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS so much as it does the S-Class and 7-Series. Especially now, given Jaguar Land Rover has killed the Jag XJ sedan. And with the top-level SV model, the Range Rover competes with more niche offerings like the Bentley Bentayga and Aston Martin DBX.
Land Rover invited us to Northern California to sample three new Range Rovers—a short-wheelbase V-8 First Edition, a long-wheelbase six-cylinder, and an SV.
Many will focus on the Range Rover’s gorgeous new exterior and plush interior, though those shouldn't take the spotlight away from the SUV’s many mechanical changes. Unlike the last Range Rover, the new platform incorporates more high strength steel to create a more rigid structure, and in addition to height-adjustable air springs, there's also new adaptive dampers, a 48-volt active anti-roll system, and rear-wheel steering. And though the vast majority of Range Rovers won't ever see an unpaved road, the SUV still has off-road chops, thanks to locking center and rear differentials, a low-range gearbox, and Land Rover's Active Terrain Response system, which uses the car's electronics to maximize available traction.
The base engine is JLR's mild-hybrid 3.0-liter straight-six, here making 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. A BMW-sourced V-8 is optional. JLR is winding down production of its long-running V-8, so it's turned to BMW for a supply of 4.4-liter twin-turbo units. Though it makes the same 523 hp and 553 lb-ft as it does in many BMW applications, Land Rover says its engine is calibrated its own specifications. The V-8 also has an intake mounted higher up than its BMW equivalent and a new oil sump to increase off-road performance. Both engines are paired with ZF's ubiquitous eight-speed automatic, while a plug-in hybrid six-cylinder is on its way, and an all-electric version set for 2024.
It's an excellent car… though there's a big problem with V-8 versions. Now, there's nothing wrong with the V-8 itself. It's an excellent engine, smooth, responsive, with broad, linear power delivery, and it has a perfect partner in the eight-speed auto. It's just that the Range Rover feels uncomfortable with the larger engine.
A vehicle's ride characteristics are best explained by two terms: Primary ride is how it handles itself through undulations or corners, while secondary ride describes how it deals with smaller surface imperfections like potholes, cracks, bumps, and broken road surfaces. The primary ride of all the new Range Rovers on hand was superb. Especially in long-wheelbase form, the Range Rover floats up and down the road in a wonderfully smooth manner. It's relaxing to experience the way the car makes short work of the dips, crests and cambers of a road.
But in the V-8 cars, the secondary ride felt unacceptably harsh. The Range Rover made every road imperfection very well known, and considering that these things will be driven largely in places with poorly maintained roads—you know, New York, Los Angeles, the entirety of Great Britain—this feels like a huge misstep. Surely the wheels take a large part of the blame as all the testers were fit on 23s, though the secondary ride harshness was pretty much nonexistent in the six-cylinder cars. When asked about this discrepancy, a Land Rover spokesperson forwarded this response from the product team: "Yes, the V-8 is definitely heavier and the weight [is] in the front. Yes, [it's] noticeable to us as well when we drive." Per Land Rover's figures, a V-8 Range Rover is 290 pounds heavier than an I-6 model.
Though you sacrifice outright pace with the straight-six, it's still a fabulous engine, with more than enough grunt to move the 5240-pound rig. This JLR-designed unit is quite high-tech, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that consists of an integrated starter-generator and an electric compressor that spools up almost instantly before a twin-scroll turbocharger takes over at higher revs. The refinement is excellent. Never is a vibration allowed into the cabin—just a pleasant, but distant, straight-six sound.
Nick Collins, JLR's head engineer, worked for Ford in a previous life where, among many other things, he was responsible for the first two generations of Fiesta ST. That makes him one of us, and he's a big part of why the new Range Rover is surprisingly engaging to drive. The combination of active anti-roll bars and rear-wheel steering give the impression of a much smaller, lower vehicle. You can hustle the Range Rover easily, and it's legitimately fun, if partly for the incongruousness of the experience—"Try doing that in an Escalade," Collins says.
The steering is a particular highlight, with perfect calibration providing a meaningful connection between your hands and the front wheels. Body control is excellent, and even when put in Dynamic mode, the car is still very comfortable (excepting the secondary-ride issues of V-8 cars). The only issue that comes up when hustling the Range Rover is the brake pedal. While the brakes themselves seem up to the task of ripping up and down mountain roads, the pedal offers very little in the way of feel. It's fine when driving normally, but in heavy braking scenarios, when you need the pedal to communicate the most, the absence of feedback is a little spooky.
Does that matter to Range Rover buyers? Probably not. Will any of them hustle their cars? Maybe someone who wants to mess with hot-hatch drivers on Welsh B-Roads, but most owners will drive Range Rovers sedately around town, country, and interstate. The rig is excellent in these settings too, the sort of car that makes you want to hold the steering wheel with fingertips and try to be as smooth as possible. You could cover large swaths of this huge country with utter ease, especially if your Range Rover has massage seats.
The interior is gorgeous. There's plush leather pretty much everywhere—though a leather-free interior is available on some trims—and the matte wood trim is artfully finished. Naturally, you get JLR's latest infotainment system, which is very user friendly and looks fabulous on the large floating touch screen. Land Rover also got rid of the secondary lower touch screen for HVAC controls, which is welcome, as that felt like technology simply for the sake of itself. The digital gauge cluster is slick too, and far easier to configure than previous JLR setups. And perhaps most importantly, you get that "command" driving position that's sold so many Range Rovers before this. The view is generally excellent, though the B-Pillars are quite thick, creating occasional blind spots when pulling out at a junction. I'm only 5' 7", yet even with the seat set to its lowest position, you can see the hood in its entirety. As this is JLR's flagship, there are rear seat setups easily as fancy as those offered in big luxury sedans. The Jaguar XJ may be gone, but JLR is not lacking in the “coddling executives” department.
My biggest gripe with the interior is that as you climb up the range—no pun intended—the quality doesn't seem to match the price. At least from the driver's seat, the cabin in the SE LWB six-cylinder is damn near as nice as the First Edition's, with the only apparent exceptions being the full executive rear seating setup and a heated steering wheel, both of which are available as options on the lower trim, plus a leather headliner, which isn't. The SV testers were all equipped with an even fancier rear seat setup, with individual chairs rather than a bench, a gorgeous center console, and a fold-out tray table. Great, but that package costs nearly $20,000.
I have a hard time seeing the appeal of the SV beyond being a status symbol. It costs nearly $50,000 more than a First Edition model, and what you really get is some (admittedly neat) trim features, including ceramic controls like those you find on high-end watches. To drive, it is totally identical to the First Edition, and thus, not as sweet as the six-cylinder SE. Plus, the example I drove had noticeable leather-on leather squeaks and rattles in addition to the poor secondary ride. It's an early build example, and the Meridian Surround Sound System can drown out a lot of bad noise, but it's not what you'd expect from a car that costs nearly $220,000. Land Rover probably won't be thrilled with my saying that the cheapest Range Rover tester it provided was by far the best, though I suspect it won't matter much. The upper spec cars will appeal to those who just want what appears to be the best.
We took the SE LWB up some muddy trails that likely wouldn't be too much of a challenge for a Subaru Outback, and it made quick work of them, even on road-biased 285/40R23 Pirelli Scorpion Verde tires. I'm sure the Range Rover is still the most capable large luxury 4x4, and I can't wait to verify that for certain.
I'm still not sold on those 23-inch wheels, though they do look amazing. Collins says they're his pick—unusual, given engineers often favor smaller wheels than designers—and argues that because the tires maintain the aspect ratio of the old Range Rover's 22-inch tires, ride quality doesn't suffer. But, the whole package is surely heavier, and that has an effect. Twenty-twos would surely pack enough visual punch and cut down on unsprung mass.
So, the new Range Rover is generally excellent, as long as there's a six-cylinder under the hood. Collins says his favorite current engine is the straight-six diesel we don't get in the U.S., and says the soon-arriving plug-in hybrid has a big appeal. The PHEV combines the inline-six with a 141-hp electric motor powered by a 38.2-kWh lithium-ion battery integrated in the floor. It can cruise on electric power only for an estimated 62 miles. Collins says the best Range Rover will be the full-electric version, which will offer smooth, quiet motoring.
Smart money should buy the six-cylinder SE, one of the finest luxury SUVs on sale today. It might not be the flashiest, but you'll feel good knowing that you bought the best version of the car as it exists today. That you only really need the base model speaks to the fundamental excellence of the new Range Rover.
We look forward to driving more iterations of the Range Rover. Perhaps the V-8 on its standard 21-inch wheels is far more comfortable, The last Range Rover PHEV was a compromised thing, with a four-cylinder engine and trunk space taken up by batteries, but this one seems to have righted those wrongs. The EV just seems plain cool. In time, we'll have a more complete verdict on this fifth-generation Range Rover, though all we can say for now is that it's an excellent luxury 4x4… if you stick with the base model.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Review
- Super smooth ride
- Wealth of interior and exterior options for customizing
- Front seats are very comfortable
- Regal on-road presence
- Some controls are confusing to operate or locate on screen
- Available third-row seating is tight for a big luxury SUV
- Feels bulky and ungainly around corners
What's new
- New plug-in hybrid model debuts with an estimated 48 miles of electric range
- New top-level SV trim offers even more features and customization
- First Edition trim no longer available
- Part of the fifth Range Rover generation introduced for 2022
Land Rover's Range Rover has evolved from the two-door utility vehicle it was more than 50 years ago into the flagship large luxury SUV that we know today. Its most recent iteration debuted just last year and brought about all-new tech, improved powertrains and an even more premium interior than before. The clean and handsome exterior design is new, too, though you'd be forgiven for mistaking it for the old model. Arguably the biggest news was the available third row, a first for the Range Rover.
Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover P400 SE 4dr SUV 4WD w/Standard Wheelbase (3.0L 6cyl Twincharger gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $4.27 per gallon for premium unleaded in North Dakota.
For 2023, Land Rover has brought back the plug-in hybrid powertrain that was last seen in 2021. This updated version makes more power and provides a Land Rover-estimated 48 miles of electric range. That's more than twice as much than the last plug-in Range Rover. The plug-in hybrid features both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, powered by a small battery pack that can be plugged in at EV chargers. Elsewhere, Land Rover has also dropped the First Edition trim for 2023, though many of its features can be had on other Range Rover trims, and introduced a new top-level SV trim.
There are plenty of competitors in this segment, especially now that the Range Rover has a third row on offer. The Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7 offer a lot of the same features and many of the premium appointments you'll find on the Range Rover, and both start for significantly less money. You could also look at traditional truck-based SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Jeep Grand Wagoneer. They provide more passenger and cargo space (two of the Range Rover's weakest areas), but none offer the premium feel you get with the Range Rover. What's the best choice? Read our test team's Expert Rating below for our full evaluation of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover.

Land Rover Range Rover vs. Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the German automaker's largest (but not most expensive) SUV. It's significantly less expensive than the Range Rover and offers standard seating for seven. We prefer the Mercedes' in-car tech, but the Range Rover offers more space, especially for second-row passengers. The Range Rover also has a slightly more premium feel than the already excellent GLS.
Land Rover Range Rover vs. BMW X7
BMW just updated the X7 with new styling inside and out, updated in-car tech and more. Like its rivals, the X7 is available with six- and eight-cylinder engines, lots of standard driver aids, and a long list of optional creature comforts. We like the X7's standard three rows of seating, though the second row isn't as spacious as the Range Rover's. The BMW is less expensive than the Land Rover but doesn't feel quite as premium inside.
Land Rover Range Rover vs. Cadillac Escalade
The Escalade is arguably the most iconic American luxury SUV, and for good reason. The latest version is better than ever, with powerful engines, solid in-car tech, and a sizable interior with plenty of space for people or cargo. Fuel economy isn't as good as the Land Rover's, but that's the price for standard V8 power. The interior isn't as luxurious either, though Cadillac counters with lower pricing.
Our experts’ favorite Range Rover safety features:
2023 land rover range rover first impressions.
The 2022 model year was a bit of a mess for Land Rover's most luxurious and expensive SUV. Depending on when you last stepped foot into your local dealership, you were either saddled with the previous-generation Range Rover — unremarkable, except for the awesome available supercharged V8 — or the brand-spanking-new Range Rover with an overhauled interior and improved technology interface. There's no such confusion with the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover , as the old model is kicked to the curb for good. Land Rover is also introducing a brand-new powertrain to supplement the existing turbocharged mild hybrid inline-six and turbocharged 4.4-liter V8.
A plug-in hybrid joins the lineup this year, and we can already tell it has more potential than the previous Range Rover PHEV last sold in 2021. That plug-in was primarily driven by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that developed nearly 400 horsepower. Though it had solid specs on paper, the powertrain's lurches and inconsistent power delivery felt unbecoming of a $100,000-plus luxury SUV. And worse, the hybrid earned lower fuel economy estimates than the standard six-cylinder model.
The PHEV variant of the new Range Rover swaps out the four-banger for an inline-six. Output is up to a robust 434 horsepower, though the torque output at 405 lb-ft is considerably less than the four-cylinder's 472 lb-ft. However, Land Rover says the Range Rover PHEV — also known as the P440e — should be able to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, which would roughly match the old four-cylinder's sprint time. The battery pack is also significantly larger than last time around, growing from 13.1 kWh of usable capacity to 31.8 kWh. All-electric range rises accordingly from the previous model's estimate of 19 miles to a Land Rover-estimated 48 miles for the new Range Rover PHEV.
Look for the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover PHEV to arrive on dealer lots later this year, with a starting price of $106,250.
We have high hopes that this version of the Range Rover PHEV will be more successful than its predecessor. With more power, a larger battery pack and the smoothness delivered by the six-cylinder engine, the PHEV could be the powertrain to get.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Generations: Everything You Need To Know In One Place
The Range Rover Sport combines most of the traditional luxury Range Rover experience with a sportier feel for the owner who wants to drive themselves

Taking its inspiration from the Range Stormer concept shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, the first of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport generations went on sale in the US the same year as a 2005 model. As the name implied, the new car was meant to imbue the luxury brand with a touch of sportiness and better driving dynamics on the road. It was developed on the LR3’s semi-monocoque, integrated body frame to combine off-road toughness with monocoque structural rigidity, but it did result in a high weight of nearly 5,500 pounds in its lightest form. After a production run of eight model years, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport’s redesign arrived for the 2014 model year, inspired by the Range Rover Evoque’s styling language. It sat on the JLR D7u platform, adapted from that used for many SUVs and sedans within Jaguar Land Rover, and shared with the L462 Discovery and L405 Range Rover. The current L460 model is sleeker, with pebble-smooth exterior surfacing as first seen on the Velar, and a refreshed lineup of gas and hybrid powertrains.
The latest of the Range Rover Sport generations, the L460, retained the inline six-pot mild-hybrid powertrains, but the hybrid now used the same engine and developed 434 hp, though this would later increase to 542 hp. Ford had stopped supplying the V8 engine, so the latest Sport gets its V8 from BMW - in 523-hp 4.4L format - and later with 626 hp in the SV Edition One.

For its mid-cycle refresh, all powertrains carried over unchanged, except for a small power boost for the supercharged V8, taking the regular one to 518 hp and the one in the SVR to 575 hp. A 380-hp version of the supercharged V6 was later added, but was soon replaced by a brand-new turbocharged Ingenium mild-hybrid inline six-cylinder in 355- and 395-hp versions, while a 398-hp 2.0L turbo-four plug-in hybrid also joined the lineup.

The L494 Range Rover Sport inherited its 510-hp supercharged 5.0L V8 from its predecessor, but the naturally aspirated version of that engine was replaced with a 340-hp supercharged 3.0L 90-degree V6 developed from the V8 by removing two cylinders. Both engines were combined with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Later, a 254-hp 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 and a 550-hp version of the supercharged V8 (installed in the SVR trim) were added.

For the 2010 model year, Land Rover made changes to the Range Rover Sport, not least styling and feature updates. More notable were the powertrain updates, with two new 5.0L direct-injected versions of the AJ-V8 replacing the old units - with natural aspiration and 375 hp or supercharging and 510 hp.

The first generation went on sale with two versions of the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine - a naturally aspirated 300-hp 4.4L and a 390-hp supercharged 4.2L, both driving all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission.
