The teacher I like most is Raman sir. He is the teacher of mathematics in our school. From the first day, all the students in the class felt very close to him because of his friendly behaviour with all of us.

He is polite and sweet natured. He is very hard-working. He loves his youngers and respects his elders. He himself is a model of good conduct. He guides us on the right path in order to make us useful and sensible citizens.

The subject of mathematics seemed very complex and difficult to me from the beginning. But he explained mathematical problems, geometry, everything so easily that I started to get very good marks in mathematics. He makes mathematics so interesting to us.

What particularly attracted me was his wide knowledge and keen interest in diverse matters. He wants his children to learn with understanding. He does not depend only on bookish knowledge. He, sometimes, also takes us out for a visit to some interesting places. A teacher, like him, could be seldom found. He shall remain an inspiration to me.

Essay on Favourite Teacher : 200 Words

In course of my student life, I came across many good teachers. Amongst them were brilliant scholars and great teachers. But in Sri Pankaj Mukherjee, I found not only a teacher with all the good qualities but also a friend, a philosopher and a guide. Although he loved everyone, I was his favourite student. Untiring in his zeal, he had great love for all students even the naughty ones. He was never unhappy even for a moment.

Though English was his favourite subject, he was equally strong in other subjects too and could go on giving notes on them with equal ease. He explained everything so lucidly that all the subjects he taught proved to be interesting. His doors were always open to us. He sympathised with us whenever we were in difficulty. He was a strict disciplinarian but he had a soft corner for all of us.

He also encouraged us to take part in sports and games and even participated in certain games with us. In short, he was more than a teacher to us. I admire him and still remember him because he was an ideal teacher in all respects.

500+ Words Essay on My Favourite Teacher

Teachers play an essential role in our life as an ideal teacher is responsible for the development of the students. Teachers play a vital role in creating a strong foundation of basic knowledge, not only regarding subjects but also for life. It is mostly what we learn at school that helps us throughout our lives when we have to make important decisions and perform other crucial tasks.

Having a particular teacher that you are especially comfortable with can be a massive advantage as it can help you move through your school years in an easier way. A good teacher can also act as a mentor, guiding you all through your life, even apart from just academics.

I am a student of 10th Class of a reputed private school. There are many great teachers in my school but everyone has that one teacher they are especially grateful to. Likewise, my favourite teacher is Mr Manish Khandelwal Sir. Manish Sir teaches us Maths, and he has a really attractive personality. He is very polite and humble and we all the students love him. He is also a person trusted the most by parents and teachers, as he constantly strives in creating a balanced environment in working hard at academics and having fun doing so.

Qualities of My Favorite Teacher

Manish Sir is tall and quite good looking. He is 32 years old and very experienced. His way of teaching is excellent. He believes in simple living and high thinking. All the students love him for his superb way of teaching and humble behaviour. He has an experience of 9 years in education, and he has done masters in Mathematics. He easily solves complicated mathematical equations.

He has a unique way of explaining his methods of solving problems. This way, he makes even the most complex of problems look simple and makes it very easy to understand for all students. He has all favourite teacher qualities in him, and has an exceptional amount of patience, which is one of the reasons why everyone considers him as the best teacher. He explains every question or doubt with so much patience and clarity and makes sure you understand them thoroughly.

He has an excellent command of English and unlike most teachers out there for whom writing impositions, formulas and theorems are important,  he focuses more on logical reasoning rather than memorising complicated equations. He is very disciplined and punctual and ensures that we follow these principles as well. He understands the importance of time and always comes on time. He possesses many of such appreciable qualities which are commendable and highly appreciated by students who want to pursue these qualities as well.

He is very enthusiastic but he is not too pushy and allows us to make the decisions on our own. He perfectly understands the balance between study and extracurricular activities and helps us stay on track with both. He believes in the overall development of the students and thus encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities.

He prepares students for Maths olympiads so that their confidence can be boosted and they excel in a complex subject like Maths. Under his guidance, many students have won prizes in Maths olympiads, and even I have scored the highest marks securing the first position in many Maths competitions. He is an asset to our school as he has played a massive role in improving the overall image of our school including co-curricular and academic aspects and we students are fortunate to have him.

What Makes Him My Favourite Teacher?

Manish Sir is my favourite teacher because he is very humble, kind and polite. I love his way of teaching. He loves all students and doesn't believe in punishing them. He focuses more on conceptual clarity than burdening students with excessive homeworks. He never scolds students and never expresses his concerns in the form of anger. Instead, he talks to the students personally in a calm manner, in a way that helps us improve and wants to put in more effort.

He asks students to be honest with him and always gives equal attention to all the students. He never makes fun of any students and gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or equation, he puts extra effort to make him understand, and never tends to lose patience. He calmly explains no matter how many times he has to repeat the same question or statement. He is focused on making us understand every concept with utmost clarity and that is the reason why all students love him.

One of my most favourite qualities of Manish sir is that he keeps track of every student in the class; how they are performing or what are the things they are good at. He constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class and helps them to improve themselves and guides them throughout the learning process. He is one of the best teachers in our school who keeps constantly motivating their students and  guiding them in all spheres of life. Manish sir is especially known for not showing even the tiniest amount of favouritism. He treats all his students with an equal amount of fondness and love and cares for every one of us deeply.

He is very experienced and full of life. He tends to keep the entire class on a positive note and never exhibits any behaviour that deteriorates other people. He is concerned about people’s feelings and never hurts anybody. He is very sober and has a great sense of humour. His mathematical knowledge is very vast. Apart from being good at mathematics, he also preaches the importance of having sound knowledge in English and literature.

He loves reading books and always encourages students to spare some time to read novels instead of doing mindless activities like watching tv or playing video games. He also advises us to get more physical activity and play with other people our age and interact more as it would improve communication. He advises students to pursue their hobbies or interests. He understands students' problems and always provides them with a helping hand. He explains everything with examples and makes every concept so interesting to learn for students.

We students love to attend his class because he is very understanding. He covers each topic in detail and gives his full attention in class. He would be the first one to notice if even a single student loses track or starts dozing off. He would just suggest an alternative method or a simpler explanation instead of blaming the student for not paying enough attention to the class. He knows how to draw students' attention in class. He never assigns us too much homework, and after class, he provides us with regular assignments to assess our understanding of a particular topic.

The assignments are often designed to be more informative and research-oriented rather than just making us write down questions or paragraphs from the book and memorise them. By actually going through related articles and books, we gain a greater amount of knowledge and this way, we tend to remember what we learn for a long time as well.

In case if any student fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in a particular chapter, he doesn't shout at them but instead makes them understand the concept again. This way, we students understand that whatever he is doing is for our own benefit and we tend to work harder to improve ourselves. These are a few of the things he does that makes him different from the other teachers and appears approachable to everyone around him. I have never seen a humble and polite teacher like him, and one day I will try to be like him in my career.

Manish Sir is not just a great teacher but also my ideal person. He has all the favourite teacher qualities, and everyone loves him. I am lucky to be his student, and I will always follow his principles in my life. Even after leaving this school, he will remain my favourite teacher, and I will never forget him. I will always remember what he has taught me through example, and I will try to be a great person like him in the future.

My Favourite Teacher Essay

English Icon

Teachers play a significant role in our lives. From our childhood, they play the biggest role in shaping our character and personality. Everyone also has a favourite teacher. Here are some essays on “My Favourite Teacher.”

100 Word Essay On My Favourite Teacher

Sarita Kaur is my favourite teacher. She teaches Social Science to class 6. She is a very professional and qualified teacher. She always helps me with my doubts, and she never gets angry even if I ask her any doubt more than once. She is very friendly and approachable, and hence many of my classmates also consider her their favourite teacher.

My Favourite Teacher Essay

I really enjoy her class, and she pays attention to each and every student in our class. She teaches in a very interactive and creative way. Her classes are very interesting, and she never makes them boring, and therefore she is my favourite teacher.

200 Word Essay On My Favourite Teacher

Everyone has a favourite teacher in their school or college life. The one teacher whose classes they look forward to attending. They wait eagerly and never skip that one particular teacher’s class. Anita Sharma is that teacher for me. She is my favourite teacher. She teaches us History, Geography, Economics, and Civics.

Most of my classmates from other sections complained about how boring these subjects were. But she makes these subjects fascinating by using her unique way of teaching. She uses stories and pictures to teach the theory. Her classes are enjoyable and engaging. She keeps checking on everyone from the first bench to the last bench in her class.

She is also one of those teachers that guides us whenever we are stuck with doubts. She even made a social media group so we can contact her especially when we have any doubts anytime. Whenever I can’t understand anything in Social Science, I ask her in the group, and she replies instantly, solving my doubts in minutes. She is always gentle and calm with students who don’t understand fundamental theories. She tries to explain them using different techniques, but there is never a slight bit of frustration or anger in her tone. She rarely scolds any student, and she has never struck someone. All these reasons made her my favourite teacher.

500 Word Essay On My Favourite Teacher

I was never a really bright student in my class, I used to love other subjects, but mathematics was always my weak subject. But it all changed in class 9 when Anirudh Kumar became our mathematics teacher. In his first-class itself, he gently and in a very calm way introduced himself and went to each and every student to ask about their hobbies and favourite subjects. When he asked me, I abruptly said, “I don’t like Mathematics, and history is my favourite subject.”

The classroom went completely silent. I was afraid that he was going to be upset over my answer, but to my shock, he smiled and said, “We will change that by the end of this year.”

Now I am in class 12, and he really did change my favourite subject. I love mathematics only because of him. He is and will always be my favourite teacher. He taught his students in a way no other teacher did. Not only that, but he never scolded anyone for doing any of the work wrong. Furthermore, he was always very patient and friendly. Even the weakest students in the class including me were slowly improving in the exams because of him.

Way Of Teaching | He used funny and catchy rhyming tricks to make us learn the hard mathematics formulas. We never ever felt any discomfort or fear in his presence; he turned the class into a convivial and jolly place single-handedly. There were days when I looked for Sunday to pass, just to be in the Mathematics class on Mondays. Whenever I got confused or troubled with any problem – from a small long division sum to choosing my career, I went to him, and he solved all my problems in seconds. Even my classmates used to take his help and fondly called him sir counsellor.

On the teacher’s day, he even won the best teacher award. He was selected by popular voting. I realised that day Anirudh sir is a favourite of many. I felt very proud and happy for him.

Inspiration To Students | He was also involved in many social activities. He used to teach poor kids for free in the evening. He was connected with many NGOs and went to teach underprivileged kids in slums on weekends. I remember once he took our entire class to the slum area. I was struck with awe when I saw him teaching the kids there with the same level of passion and zeal he used to teach us in the school. That was the moment he became my all-time favourite teacher.

Impact On My Life | I scored the highest marks in Mathematics in my class 9. He developed a spark in me to study mathematics. He turned the dull and boring subject into something I love doing just for fun. I even scored full marks in my class 10 Board Examination. I spoke to him over the phone and thanked him. The mediocre student in me will be forever grateful to him for teaching with so much passion. He played a huge part in making me what I am today.

For me, the most outstanding teacher is my parents. They always teach me the right and tell me how wrongdoings can destroy me forever. From my childhood, they have given me happiness and have also taught me that lack of anything should not be criticized. One must try to balance and get the best from the least. They scold me for my own benefit. Their teachings will forever guide me in my future in the best way.

A teacher shows us the right path towards knowledge and pulls us away from the darkness of ignorance and lack of knowledge. As human beings, we always need a teacher to help us mature in our future. Everybody gets a teacher right from their childhood.

Our parents are our greatest teachers. They give us the first knowledge of life. In schools, we receive lots of teachers who teach us academically. They are mostly responsible to give us knowledge about the institutions of the world. I have come across several of them and yet my class teacher is my favourite.

She teaches us Maths, the subject I fear the most. I used to be extremely scared of it because I always failed to solve those tough problems. But my class teacher is so kind to me that she helps me daily to get rid of my fears in Maths. She teaches me the sums in the easiest way and also inspires me to practice more.

She speaks sweetly and is adorable. The best part of my teacher is that she never scolds me when I get a sum incorrect. With lots of patience, she points out the wrong and corrects me. For her, I am confident in solving all the sums in the book. I am grateful to her for the unconditional support she has given me.

From the Vedic ages, the significance of a guru is specified as someone who will guide his disciples towards the light of true knowledge He will teach them both right and wrong and also mentor them to take correct decisions in their lives. A guru is the assimilation of the Trinity, The Brahma, the Vishnu, and the Maheshwar.

He is aware of everything and is capable of leading his disciples from ignorance to complete knowledge of the self and the world. Today the notion of a gurukul has changed and been replaced by well-made classrooms. The teacher today represents the early guru who plays that same task of giving his students the best education and correct knowledge.

For me, being a teacher is one of the greatest blessings on earth. Because God cannot be everywhere, so he has created teachers as their replicas. I myself aspire to be a teacher one day so that I can serve the children with my wisdom and knowledge. Teachers enable their students to rise higher in their lives fearlessly and be confident in their approach. To me, my parents are my greatest teachers. They have given me the best knowledge of my life and have taught me to choose good over bad.

Life is quite vast and my parents help me daily to fight through all odds. They not only just feed me and educate me in a good school, but also teach me the proper manners and behaviour in life. They help me to aspire for a greater and happier life in the future. Several things happen in my life as a young person. I go through several emotions that I cannot myself understand totally.

I easily disclose it to my parents and they show me the way out of the confusion. My parents do not create unnecessary rules over me and stop me from enjoying my life. They always keep faith in me and their teachings make me humble. I can never think of hurting them because that will destroy their goodwill over me. Parents are the first and the foremost teachers in our lives. We learn the earliest knowledge of respect and obedience from them.

In our schools, we come across many subject teachers who give us institutional knowledge. They are important because they give us a picture of the professional world. Yet the first knowledge of the alphabet, and the first speech happens at home. Home is the place from where a good character is born. Hence, for me, my favourite teachers are my parents.

I have written these essays in pretty simple language for a better understanding of all kinds of students. If you still have any confusion regarding the context, let me know through the comment section below. Keep browsing this website for more valuable sessions.

Teacher, this is the word that has been given the highest rating in the lifetime of a human being. The first Guru of man is said to his parents who give him the first knowledge of life. A teacher spends his entire life in creating a bright future for his disciples. He is the teacher who teaches man to differentiate between right and wrong. A teacher is as important as a parent in a human’s life. The teacher not only educates but also gives correct guidance from his experience. So today, we are writing an essay on my favourite teacher in the same subject, which is often asked in exams.

My name is Mohan and I am a student of class 12th in school. Today I am going to write a few lines on my favourite teacher, but before that, we understand the importance of a teacher in life, why it is necessary to have a good teacher in the life of a student? The first teacher of a student is his parent who teaches him the basic functions of life. Such as walking, eating, getting up, sitting, speaking, etc. are taught which are the basics of life. And this is where our student life begins.

My life also started in this way. I changed my school in 7th class, where I met many children and Rohan became my best friend because we have been together since childhood. Both of us were very naughty and often our parents complained about us in school, but where were we going to improve. But in class 8th, a new science teacher came to the school. Initially, they ignored our mischief, but before the annual examination, we had our class test, in which only two of us failed and the rest of the class were pass the test. He asked to wait after the holiday and we started waiting for the holiday.

As soon as the holiday took place, they called us to their office and asked why we failed. Therefore, we also started having some fun but what did we know that anything like this would happen. He got the stick out of the back of the cupboard and then what, there is darkened in front of our eyes for next 10 minutes, and after that, he said there will be retest on tomorrow or else if you failed again tomorrow I will crush you in front of the class. We both went home without talking to each other. As soon as class started on the second day, both of us were tested again. Not much but we both passed that test.

Sir again called us to the office and we walked into the office afraid. Sir was very happy to see us and also gave a bar of chocolate and said that if you want to be successful in life, you will have to work hard, it is also important to enjoy, but it does not mean that you do not pay attention to studies. I cannot forget the moral lecture that Sir gave that day in my entire life. That day punishment was our first and last. We never looked back after that day.

From that day he became a favorite teacher to us. Whatever problem we had, we used to ask them without any hesitation. Not only related to studies, we used to share our life’s troubles with him and he also shared his experience with us. For him, every candidate was the same, he did not discriminate. Once a week, he used to leave his studies in class and teach us from his experience and motive. Whenever we saw them, new energy was communicated, there are very few people whose personality is so motivational.

He became not only our favorite teacher but also the whole class’s favorite teacher. I have not met a teacher of personality like him to date. He will be the favourite teacher of my whole life even if I do meet any number of teachers. The lesson he taught in life will remain with me for a lifetime. Seeing them, I set the direction of my career and moved towards becoming a teacher like him.

His style of teaching was different from all teachers. He used to use book knowledge less but his experience more to explain any subject. We did not have to read that topic again because they connected our daily life with it. That knowledge did not remain confined in books but used to be included in our daily routine. We also used to examine whatever was in the lab. He did not keep us confined in any one topic. He also told us additional important things that were not available in our books. Due to this, our interest in studies increased day by day.

He was not only our but also a favorite of other teachers and principal. He never had any estrangement with any other teacher but he never supported anything wrong. He used to fearlessly put his side without any bias and this was what made him very special and different. He had his ideals which he followed with hard work.

He was fond of books and listening to music. Whenever he got time, he used to read newspapers or some books great ideal authors. He always used to get up at 5:30 in the morning and go to the morning walk, this habit kept him so fit and refreshed. He always used to tell us to use the time properly, do not waste time in vain once it has passed, it will never come back. And for a healthy body, exercise is as important as a nutritious food.

I feel luckiest to have such a teacher who has a lot of experience of life and guide us with full of interest. I learned not only academic knowledge but also the knowledge of life which comes only with the experience. So I want to thank him to give direction and specific goal to my life. I pray to God for his good and healthy life.

My Favourite Teacher Essay In English: 100 Words

My favorite teacher for the longest time has been Tapashi, ma’am. A political science teacher by profession, I have looked at Tapshi Ma’am as a mentor. There was something so different about her from the very beginning.

We didn’t have the best of starts, to begin with – I was only 13 when I first met her. She was loud, intimidating, and so good at what she did that we had no option but always study in her class. But she was responsible for making me fall in love with political science as a subject.

I never took tuition classes or faced any issues with the subject – because, thanks to ma’am, my concepts were crystal clear, and that’s precisely what you need.

So, without a doubt, my favorite teacher is Tapashi, ma’am. – of course, there are other reasons as well, but if I did have to talk briefly about the same, then this is kinda enough.

Unfortunately, if you are looking up ‘my favourite teacher essay in Hindi,’ then we cannot help you out! But you can always read our essay in English and accordingly express the same in your preferred language – and trust us, it will be fun.

When I realized that I had to write a classic 200-worded my favorite teacher essay, I was pretty happy, considering I have so much to say about my favorite teacher.

Growing up, I have always wanted to study English. But surprisingly, it wasn’t my English teacher in school who became my favorite teacher. She was lovely, but it was my tuition teacher, Aditi Ma’am, who made my life so much easier.

In fact, I would have never survived Shakespeare without her. Now, I love dissecting tough passages from Shakespeare, but it was only a few years ago I would have gotten so scared just hearing the famous playwright’s name.

I also met my oldest friends at Aditi Ma’am’s house, which only made life better for me. Aditi Ma’am taught so well and provided me with a safe space to spread my wings and become whoever I wanted to become.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that she is one of my favorite teachers. For me, it’s so hard to choose one teacher over the other, considering there was more than one person who shaped my education and early years. Now that I am a little grown up (he he), I can’t help but realize their contribution to my life.

My Favourite Teacher Essay In English: 300 Words

My Favourite Teacher Essay In English: 300 Words

Years ago, while writing my favourite teacher essay for class 7, I honestly had nothing to write. I was utterly confused – I pretty much liked everyone and had no favorites.

But it’s been nearly five years since then, and now, if you give me the same topic to write on, I could probably go on and on about my favorite teachers.

That way, my favorite teacher of all time is, hands down, my mom. Besides the obvious reasons as to why I love my mom , there’s so much more to her. Yes, she is a mother – but she is an artist. And I find artists inspiring.

  • I have seen her break down into tiny pieces, and I have seen her rise like a phoenix.
  • I have seen her fail terribly, and I have seen her succeed double the times she failed.
  • I have seen her lose her temper, and I have seen her empathize with causes I believe in.

My mother is my biggest teacher – she taught me it’s always okay to go after what you want, even when the world outside judges you for being selfish. She taught me that loving yourself should always be a priority – because you have nobody but yourself to hold on to your worst days.

My mother taught me that sometimes, it’s okay to let go of people, places, and memories – that sometimes, making yourself a top priority is important. And you guys can judge all you want, but believe me, having a mom who thinks not just of what people will think about me but instead of how I’ll feel in the process.

So, yeah, my mother is an artist, a wife, a mother, a sister, and most importantly, a woman. A woman who has always been my favorite teacher. Also, just saying if you think your mum keeps saying that particular friend is not good for you, she is probably right – trust us on this one!

My Favourite Teacher Essay In English: 500 Words

My favorite teacher, Mrs. Mukherjee, was an English teacher at my high school. I always looked forward to going to her class, not just because I loved the subject but because she made learning fun and interesting. Mrs. Mukherjee was not just a good teacher, she was also a kind and compassionate human being who genuinely cared about her students’ well-being.

One of the things I loved the most about Mrs. Mukherjee was her unique teaching style. She didn’t just stand at the front of the class and lecture us, she engaged us in interactive and thought-provoking activities.

For example, instead of just assigning us a book to read, she would organize a debate or a mock court trial based on the characters and themes in the book. This not only made the class more enjoyable, but it also helped us to better understand and analyze the literature. Mrs. Mukherjee also encouraged us to think critically and form our own opinions rather than just memorizing information from the textbook.

Mrs. Mukherjee was also a master at making dull grammar lessons interesting. She would come up with creative and fun ways to teach us grammar rules, such as creating songs or games. I remember one time, she divided the class into groups and gave us each a grammar rule to create a song or write a poem on. Not only did we have a blast creating the songs, but we also remembered the rules much better because of the fun and memorable experience. Mrs. Mukherjee’s enthusiasm and creativity in teaching made even the most mundane topics fun and engaging.

Apart from her teaching style, Mrs. Mukherjee’s personality was what made her stand out as my favorite teacher. She had a great sense of humor and was always cracking jokes in class, making the atmosphere light and enjoyable. However, she also knew when to be serious and would always take the time to listen to her students’ problems and offer advice.

I remember one incident where I was having a tough time with personal issues, and Mrs. Mukherjee noticed that I was not my usual self in class. She took me aside after class and patiently listened to me as I poured my heart out. She not only gave me words of comfort but also made a genuine effort to check in on me every day after that. Her kindness and care for her students went beyond the classroom and made a huge impact on my life.

Mrs. Mukherjee was not just a teacher to me, she was a mentor and a role model. She taught me important life lessons, such as the power of empathy, the value of hard work, and the importance of having a sense of humor. She instilled in me a love for literature and writing, and because of her, I pursued a career in English. Mrs. Mukherjee’s impact on my life goes beyond the classroom, and I will always be grateful to have had her as my teacher.

And It’s A Wrap!

And it’s a wrap on the basic ‘my favourite teacher essay 1000 words’ – now coming back, what are your thoughts on this enlightening essay? Do you have a favorite teacher or multiple favorites? Or is it your mom or perhaps your dad?

While sharing your thoughts, feel free to talk about your personal thoughts, opinions, and stories about your favorite teacher in the comments below.

Narrative Essay: My Favorite Teacher

Introduction

My favorite teacher of all time has to be my English literature teacher. He was called Mr. Radford, and Mr. Radford is my favorite teacher for many reasons, all of which I will go over as they happened. The course of events goes from my first year to my last year of high school.

Taught me history

My favorite teacher was my English literature teacher. He started out as my history teacher and made a first impression as a bit of a stuffy old man. He believed in god, even though most of the class didn’t, and he was known for shouting at kids. He was also oddly loved by the older students, and nobody in the first year knew why as we sat in class before him.

The world is flat

He started a lesson by telling us the world is flat. He said he could prove it and encouraged the class to quiz him on it. We spent the whole lesson arguing fiercely that the world was round, but every answer, reason or evidence we gave to him was thrown back with a plausible theory. He explained why we do not fall off of the end of the earth, and gave even more convincing reasons was to why a compass points north and south. As the bell went and we were all about to leave, he said to us, “That is the reception Copernicus got when he tried to explain that the earth was not the center of the universe.”

Had a triple heart bypass

He vanished and we were told he had a triple heart bypass. The support he got from the students was legendary. Shortly before he came back, our English teacher (who was also a fantastic man) died of leukemia. Mr. Fawdry was a great man and treated his students with the same respect he gave adults.

Came back as an English literary teacher

Mr. Radford came back and started to teach English instead of History. He was still the Principal’s second in command, but had decided to change to history. The man who now taught history was a spotty young man who could not handle the class. Veteran teachers had trouble controlling the classes, so having this man teach History was like throwing a lamb to the wolves. Mr. Radford always had control of his class, and even once told of the brainy kid in the class for talking too much (which was a great moment for all of us).

He thought he was history, but he still has a story to live

Mr. Radford stopped teaching history and started teaching English. It was weird seeing him in a new setting, but the class structure and respect level stayed the same. He did not even look ill after having the surgery; although he probably had a lot of time to recover, (it gets harder to remember these days).

Who is making all of this noise?

This was a classic line that he gave as he burst out of his English class. The hallways were always a riot as kids moved from one class to another. He was used to being locked in the dungeon that was the history department. The English class was next to the main hallway. He burst out of his classroom into the crowded hallway and yelled, “Who the hell is making all of this noise.” A young first year student who had only been there a week said, “You are.”

Teachers give you last year’s tests to look at so you can see what it going to be on the exams. They have you do mock tests and they point out the important stuff you need to remember. Mr. Radford gave quality advice that nobody else ever said. For example, he said to use the phrase “of which” in a sentence, as it demonstrates a higher level of English that will get you into the higher grade margins.

He was the only one to outwardly defend me in class

Most kids are bullied in school, and I was called names and picked on all the time. It wasn’t a physical thing, just a constant stream of name-calling. I was used to getting it all day every day. It was only in his class where he once said, “Would you leave him alone.” It’s strange how stuff like that is remembered. My Geography teacher did it once too. Mr. Whitaker said, “Would you lay off him” which is also something I remember because teachers used to just let it happen.

He was smart enough to see past Steven Cardwell

In an English Lit class, Mr. Radford said something about John Wayne, and for some reason I said, “Take it away pilgrim” in a normal volume but as a John Wayne impression. Steven Cardwell did a gasp and an “aww” as if I had said something very offensive. Usually, this made the teacher holler at whoever spoke with the assumption that Steven’s reaction was warranted. Mr. Radford didn’t fall for it. He just asked what I said and said no more about it. I had watched countless other kids get in trouble because of Steven, but Mr. Radford didn’t fall for it.

He taught me how to think.

The “world is flat” lesson really got to me. It is the first time I started to question what I am supposed to “know” and what is supposedly true. He taught me to think so that even in the later years when he was teaching English, I could see past the text interpret it in a multitude of logical ways.

Essay on My Favourite Teacher

Everyone has that one teacher who leaves a lasting impression on their lives, someone who not only teaches academic lessons but also life lessons. My favourite teacher, Mrs. Johnson, is such a person who has greatly influenced my outlook towards education and life. Teaching English and Literature, she has a unique way of making complex subjects simple and engaging for all her students.

Her feedback is always constructive, aimed at helping us grow. She motivates us to read extensively, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of literature.

Beyond Academics

What sets Mrs. Johnson apart is her involvement in students’ lives beyond academics. She is a mentor, guiding us through personal and educational challenges. Her office is always open for students to discuss any issues they might be facing. She organizes extra-curricular activities related to literature, such as book clubs and writing workshops, encouraging us to explore our interests further. Her belief in the importance of mental health has led her to advocate for stress management sessions, making her a pivotal figure in creating a supportive learning environment.

Lasting Influence

Mrs. Johnson’s influence extends beyond the classroom. She teaches us the importance of kindness, empathy, and hard work. Her dedication to teaching and her students inspires me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life. Essay on my Favourite Teacher in 500 Words

Ambika Singh Ma’am is my favourite teacher who taught me History in school. She has been a teacher for the past two decades & has done a Masters in History. She hails from Uttarakhand. Apart from teaching, she is a fitness freak, animal lover & loves baking. Her humble, kind & polite nature is what makes her & her way of teaching more interesting. She loves all her students & is not the one who believes that punishing students is the right way to handle things. She focuses more on understanding the student on a personal level at first & then with time builds a rapport with them so that students feel free to share their concerns & doubts with her. She always deals with her students in a kind & compassionate manner.

She always prefers to be frank & honest with her students & expects the same from them. In her eyes, all students are equal. She never passes rude or funny comments on any student. She gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or topic, she puts in extra effort to make them understand so that they can perform well. She always remains calm & is ready to explain things no matter how many times a student asks. She is focused on making students learn the concepts with clarity & right strategy.

One of my most favourite qualities of Ambika Ma’am is that she keeps track of every student in her class; how they are performing or the things they are good at. She constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class & helps them to improve themselves She is one of the best teachers in our school & in my life that I have come across, till date. All the students who are & have been her student really admire & respect her a lot. She is very warm & a noble soul. She knows how to draw students’ attention in class. She regularly checks up on her student’s progress & their development.

The assignments she designs for her students are more research-oriented rather than just letting students answer questions straight from the book & memorise as she believes that one should be open to learning new things & not just stick to the prescribed syllabus always. By actually going through a rational & nuanced approach towards studies & extra-curricular activities, we gain a greater amount of knowledge & this way, we tend to remember things for a longer time & handle situations quite well.

In case if any student of her fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in an exam, she is not the one to scold or give them a harsh punishment. Rather she believes in being with her student & hearing them out what difficulties they face, where was she not able to make them understand a particular topic, how do they want her to deal with their doubts & concerns. By doing so, students understand that whatever she is doing is for their own benefit & they then tend to work harder to improve themselves. These are the things sets her apart from the other teachers & that is what makes her an approachable person. She is one of the most empathetic, righteous & down to earth person I have come across.

Below we have provided My Favourite Teacher Essay, suitable for class 7, 8, 9 and 10 students.

How you’ll are doing? What is wrong with you? Is there a problem, if yes kindly let me know? Were the questions asked to us by my most favourite teacher Mrs Rupali who tried to comfort and understand our problems. She was our English teacher who was smart, intelligent, beautiful and 40 years old. A person who followed a simple living and high thinking principle. Her attributes were pleasing, and everybody loved her soft tone.

She always looked sober and was a highly experienced professional. She was a post-graduate in English and Social Studies and was a trained dancer. The best part of her personality was, she never believed in punishment instead offered us the opportunity to improve our habits and behaviour. Her teaching method was out of the box, including unique and creative ways.

Since she knew many students had difficulty in reading and speaking English, she used to conduct additional classes where students were motivated to learn through role-play and acting. We were given assignments to prepare scripts for drama and debate. Her homework used to be unusual and different from other teachers who always motivated our zeal. Under her guidance, our school won many competitions in elocution, essay writing and debate.

Her class used to be engaging and exciting. She was a great narrator and explained our poems and lessons through stories. Our grammar lessons were taught through videos and audible lessons. However, she displayed a sober and simple look but also had a humorous side to her personality. Several times, she introduced us to new books and novels that could harness our skills.

Her suggested books were mostly award-winning and highly acclaimed among the masses. Once she took us to a literary program conducted by her teacher. That is the time we realised that she is not just the best teacher but even a good student too. Her patience and resilience were the traits that made her famous and unique in the school. Every child loved and admired her for her graceful nature.

We were blessed to have such an excellent teacher who believed in parity and treated everyone equally. She was reputed not only in our schools but in other schools as well because of her exemplary teaching skills and cheerful character. Even the parents respected her and approached her for valuable advice. As a member of the board in school, she made sure discipline and creativity are imparted in the classes.

During the teacher’s day, she was the one who received more flowers and gifts than any other teacher in the school. Moreover, we were fortunate to witness her ex-students meeting and taking her blessings. Lastly, in my opinion, the best teacher is the one who inspires and persuades children to follow and achieve their goal.

She assists the child in paving the way and creating a place that the child craves and desires for. Mrs Rupali was the teacher who saw good in everyone and had a positive outlook. Classroom learning was based on morals instead of instructions. In the words of Bob Talbert, “Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best.”

Short Essay on My Favourite Teacher in 150 Words

Below we have provided a short essay on my favourite teacher, usually given for class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 school students.

My favourite teacher was Ms Rose, who used to teach us science and maths. She completed her studies from America and started teaching in India. Her eyes were brown in colour and hair blonde. She was tall and thin. With spectacles on her face, she always smiled at everyone with those sparkling eyes. Her personality seemed strict when I first met her; however, she was opposite.

Her loving, caring and motivating nature made her the most favourite teacher among the students. Not only her behaviour but her teaching skills were distinctive. Her sense of humour, patient and easy-going character brought life into the class. Every student loved her method of teaching and was attentive and active during her course. For many students, science and maths have been the tough subjects to crack.

I was one of them who was weak in both the subjects. Like me, many others faced the same issue. Ms Rose was a sharp-eyed and vigilant teacher who was aware of every child’s weaknesses and strengths. In class, she insisted us to ask questions and clear our doubts. For weaker student’s like me, she took extra courses and put additional efforts after school so that we don’t lag and understand the subject wisely.

In between classes, she always used to share the culture of the US and how she faired in her school. Furthermore, she possessed an optimistic attitude towards life and encouraged us to engage in productive activities, take up community service every weekend, hones our skills, takes up a hobby and turns it into a passion. Her thoughts and way of life differed from many of us as she followed her heart and displayed humanitarian character. Her modest and mild disposition always inspired my friends and me. I love and admire her the most and hope to become like her.

How To Write An Essay On ‘My Teacher’ For Grades 1, 2 and 3!

Key Points To Note When Writing On ‘My Teacher’ For Lower Primary Classes

My favourite teacher essay – 10 lines in english, short essay on my teacher, long paragraph on ‘my teacher’ for kids, what will your 1st, 2nd or 3rd grader learn from ‘my teacher’ essay.

Essays are extremely important for children studying in classes 1, 2, and 3. And often, when at school, they are the closest with their teacher, implying that an essay on the topic ‘My Teacher’ is perfect for such young kids. Experts state that writing improves critical thinking and problem-solving, and skills as words need to be written in a specific structure and order. Also, there is a deep connection between reading and writing. Once children learn to write at a young age, it helps them identify the connection between letter sounds and phonetic sounds.

Did you know that essay writing is a crucial element in most competitive examinations across the globe? This is exactly why the concept of creative writing needs to be taught to a child from the very beginning. Over here, we will discuss how to write a paragraph on their teacher.

You can help your children express their feelings by writing a few lines on their teacher. For early and young learners, such as classes 1, 2 and 3, creative writing is an opportunity to express what they learn and experience. When a child begins to write what they feel, this enables a range of life-long skills. So, do ask your children to write a paragraph about their teacher.

A teacher plays many important and significant roles in our lives such as a guardian, guru, learning instructor, mentor, and guide. A teacher shows us the path to success in different stages of our lives. Young kids have delicate minds, and when they are provided with an opportunity to write on a specific topic, they try to express their views from their hearts. It is a beautiful experience to watch a child express their innocent views in simple and short sentences. With the following tips in mind, you can teach them to write an excellent essay on their teacher:

  • An essay primarily comprises an introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • You can start by introducing your school – the name and location of your school. You can then mention which class you are studying and your favourite teachers.
  • In the body of the essay you can describe your favourite teacher and what are the qualities in them that make them special to you.
  • You can also speak about how your teacher helps, guides, and corrects you.
  • Art the conclusion stage of the essay, you can write about how you would always be thankful to this teacher of yours, and what is that one important life skill you have learnt from them.

Teachers are, undoubtedly, some of the most essential people in a child’s life, and are also the most important people, next to parents, for students. Children begin learning in their elementary schools with the help of teachers. Then a student’s next phase after elementary school is middle school, where teachers guide students through the crucial adolescent changes. Students then mature as young adults during their middle school journey with various life-related questions. High school teachers then guide, support, and impart values to the student’s new life phase questions. The highest level of satisfaction in every teacher is to watch their students grow and achieve success in their respective lives. When asked to write an essay on the topic ‘my teacher’, for classes 1 and 2, you can use the following ten lines. You can even tweak it to use for writing a few lines on the same topic for class 3 –

  • To honour every teacher’s contribution to a student’s life, Teacher’s Day is celebrated annually on September 5th.
  • A teacher helps students learn important values for life.
  • Teachers play a big role in moulding and shaping a student’s life.
  • A student’s accomplishments provide teachers with enormous satisfaction and pride in good education.
  • My teacher never forgets to give us a warm hug before we enter and walk out of our classes every day.
  • She teaches us Science and tells us a lot of interesting facts and stories.
  • Teachers play the role of second parents in imparting life values and helping in our overall development.
  • My teacher is very disciplined and punctual and always comes to class on time.
  • My teacher makes the most effort to make learning fun for us and is always ready to help us whenever we are stuck.
  • In this way, my class teacher is an important figure in my life, like a guide, who inspires us to do well in our studies regularly.

As parents, we may have observed that children tend to listen to their teachers more than their parents. This clearly demonstrates the importance of the teacher’s impact on students. Teachers impart crucial and valuable life lessons to their students. This can be used an example of a short essay on this topic for class 3, or a short paragraph about the favourite teacher:

I study in Delhi Public School and there are a total of thirty teachers in my school. All the teachers in the school are good, but my favourite is Mr. Rishabh Singh. He is polite, well educated, friendly, and an excellent teacher. He considers all the students as his own children and guides us as a friend and mentor. We enjoy his class a lot as he makes us happy too. Thus, I am forever grateful and incredibly proud to have such a great teacher.

Note: This example can even be referred to by students of class 2.

A teacher is a life-changing role model who influences a child’s growth development and inculcates essential everyday values. Schools often require students to write a paragraph on their favourite teacher for class 3, as teachers are the developmental blocks of society. The following can be used as an example of a long essay on my class teacher:

My favourite teacher is someone who imparts essential and valuable lessons, and guides students to always take the right path in life. The best teachers aim to achieve a balance of both positivity and negativity in each student’s life. However, just as a coin, there are two types of teachers- teachers that are understanding, and teachers that are strict. An understanding teacher enhances teaching scenarios. Some teachers always remain in a person’s memory due to the role they have played in a student’s life. One such teacher who will always remain in my memory is Mrs. Smita Bansal, our 2nd standard Art and Crafts teacher. Though she taught Art, Mrs. Smita always helped us out with any problem we faced in school. She was a teacher whom every student went to for any kind of advice. She had the great ability to motivate all students. She was always kind, helpful, and generous. She always treated students like friends, and always had time for them, and understood them. She also told us to never think negatively and always think positively. I am so grateful to have her in my life.

Note: The above example can also be used for a long teacher paragraph for class 3.

The composition about /my class teacher’ will help your child learn to make points before beginning their description. Writing essays will also inculcate emotional and intelligent skills in children. Finally, the essay makes them appreciate their teachers.

In this way, these tips can help children to write a cohesive and beautiful paragraph or essay on their teachers, regardless of whether they are in class 1, 2 or 3. So, you too can use these tips and help your child improve in creative writing, starting with one essay at a time.

The 10 Most Important Qualities of a Good Teacher, According to Real Educators

This is what it takes to succeed in this challenging career.

Qualities of a Good Teacher: Build relationships with kids and families. Be firm but fair. Show patience and compassion. Be flexible.

It’s a standard teacher interview question : “What do you think is the most important quality of a good teacher?” While everyone has a different answer, there are some that come up more often than others. We asked a group of experienced educators and administrators to share their thoughts on the key qualities of a good teacher. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Patience

write essay my favourite teacher

This was far and away the most commonly mentioned characteristic by educators in our survey. “Patience can be used in virtually every situation,” says high school ELA teacher Ann Cox. “If a teacher is able to remain calm, consider others’ point of view, and think through scenarios, they will be able to navigate just about anything that comes their way.”

She continues: “Patience helps teachers not to react in the moment when students are off task, disrespectful, etc. It’s also helpful when dealing with angry parents so you don’t say or do something you might regret later. And patience is definitely needed when sitting through meetings and professional development sessions!”

For ELA teacher Kenly CG, patience means “paying attention to each student’s needs and showing that you care about your students’ learning.” UK special school teacher Sarah Brown also advises “remaining calm, listening and observing students’ needs, repeating instructions, and modelling again when necessary.”

2. Empathy and Compassion

write essay my favourite teacher

These two traits were a close second behind patience when we asked about the qualities of a good teacher. “They have to know you care before they can learn from you,” explains middle school teacher Samantha Wheeler. As a special ed teacher from New York notes: “You have to teach the child before you can teach the curriculum.”

“Empathy is a constant exercise in stepping outside of yourself and your perspective to see the children you teach for who they are,” notes Indiana preschool teacher Maile C. Quinton. “Contact talks. Get down on the same level as a child, listen to what they say, and emphasize their shared feelings by validating them. Don’t try to silver lining everything—you can validate a situation, a moment, an emotion without condoning a behavior or a problem. Empathy isn’t sympathy.”

3. Flexibility and Adaptability

Being open-minded to change is critical in this field. So many of the educators we surveyed agree with this North Carolina ESL teacher: “There is nothing constant in teaching. Good teachers have to be able to adapt to the changing needs of students, to new administrators, new curricula, new colleagues, and new technology.”

“With so many different needs from students and parents, teachers need to be flexible to accommodate and meet students where they are at,” says elementary school counselor Lisa K, while high school English teacher Nicole P. adds, “There are often times where you need to think on your feet, so being flexible is important to go with the flow in different situations.”

Elementary special ed teacher Brianna Vuori sums it up like this: “We can only begin to predict what the future will hold and with that what we need to prepare students for, so adaptability is critical to being able to survive and thrive in this ever-changing profession.”

Teaching can be a tough gig, and you’ll need to be dedicated and passionate in order to thrive. “Passion is what drives us forward and what sees us through rough times,” emphasizes ELS department head Katerina T. “It is the driving force behind every lesson plan or decision we make and what lies at the foundation of life-changing relationships with our students.”

“Teachers that have passion will always find a way to meet the demands of the job,” says Florida teacher Jamie Cabaniss. “Teachers can lean on their passions when feeling frustrated and burnt out. Passions are what reignite us to get back in the classroom to teach our hearts out.”

Preschool teacher Christina H. couldn’t agree more. “You have to have a love and passion for what you are doing,” she declares. “Teaching isn’t just ‘teaching.’ It is also being a second mom (or dad), a counselor, a referee, a nurse, and so much more. To wear these many hats, you need to love what you are doing. You also need to love your students to help them succeed. Loving them on their best and worst days is what will make you successful.”

5. Kindness

Over and over again, educators emphasized kindness as one of the most important qualities of a good teacher. “We are in the business of teaching human beings. We must teach them to be good people,” stresses Adam Peterson, Illinois music teacher and tutor.

Tina Jones agrees: “Teachers need to be kind, caring, compassionate and understanding. In our world today, with kids getting so much information and misinformation via social media, children need examples of those qualities more than ever.”

6. Collaboration

“Good teachers need to be able to give ideas, ask for help, share, and communicate with coworkers and families,” advises one Washington second grade teacher. “Be able to take suggestions, offer help, and not take things personally.”

Teachers regularly have to work collaboratively, and not just with their fellow colleagues and administrators. Developing strong, collaborative relationships with parents and families is vital. To succeed in this field, you need to learn to work well as part of a team.

7. Professionalism

It probably feels like professionalism should be a given in any job, but it’s one of the most important qualities of a good teacher because you need to gain and maintain the respect of students, families, and administration. “Some days are going to be frustrating, discouraging, and stressful,” warns an Ohio 7th grade science teacher, “but you need to remain professional by staying calm and encouraging and being a good mentor for your students.”

8. Sense of Humor

write essay my favourite teacher

There’s no doubt about it, teachers do best when they have a sense of humor. “Laughing at yourself is a great relief, and laughing with children builds trust with them,” says Maile C. Quinton. Find ways to bring humor into your classroom, and you’ll find that students relax and learn a little more easily. (Plus, it’s much easier to deal with the small daily annoyances of teaching when you learn to laugh them off!)

9. Open-Mindedness

write essay my favourite teacher

“Be open to learning from more (and even less) experienced teachers, and open to trying out new teaching and classroom management methods,” recommends middle school ELA teacher Abigail Perry.

“We are building relationships with a diverse student population,” notes Cheryl Rizzo, a middle school ELA teacher. “This can be a source of stress or create divide. However, with an open mind, it can create new opportunities or a chance to grow. Teachers are open-minded when they allow students to have a voice and take an active part in their education.”

Part of being open-minded means demonstrating a willingness to grow and a dedication to growth mindset. According to a literacy coach from North Carolina: “This job requires constant reflection, learning, and growth.”

10. Resilience

write essay my favourite teacher

Marilyn Weber, a retired principal from Massachusetts, names this as the quality she looked for in a good teacher. “In order to navigate the world of education with all its related constituencies and responsibilities, an educator needs to be knowledgeable, flexible, an impeccable communicator, and should be able to withstand all the highs and lows of what comes their way and needs to be accomplished,” she states. She added that educators must be able to “do so without allowing any of that to shake their confidence and resolve in order to do what’s best for their students.”

That’s a tall order! Fortunately, Andrea Perry, a certified coach for educator well-being, has some advice. “Develop emotional intelligence. It’s critical for keeping our calm and being proactive, not reactive. This supports the teacher not only in serving their students well but also helps them remain joyfully in the profession as well.”

More Qualities of a Good Teacher To Consider

These qualities of a good teacher didn’t make the top 10, but they’re definitely worthwhile attributes for every educator to cultivate:

  • Inclusive mindset: “There is such a huge stigma against disabilities and it is often hushed away, which creates shame. All children are general education first and receive special education services second. Build a classroom community with respect by explaining differences to students and celebrating everyone’s strengths. True inclusivity helps all students grow, not just the students in a special education classroom. True inclusivity should help you as a teacher grow.” —Katie M., Functional Life Skills Teacher
  • Love for all children: “A good teacher must truly like kids, even the naughty ones. Too often teachers only seem to like the ‘good’ kids or the ones from ‘good’ families. They attribute the student’s behavior to something personal or bad about them. Instead, those are the kids in whom we need to diligently look for the good.” —Kathryn Roe, retired educator and administrator
  • Love of learning
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Hopefulness
  • Imagination
  • Reliability
  • Knowledge of content and pedagogy
  • High expectations

I went to college at 40 while raising my 5 children. I had to make some parenting sacrifices.

  • I decided to go to college at 40 when I was busy raising 5 children.
  • My schedule was chaos, and the kids had to skip some events because of my studies.
  • Years later, I got my degree and have created the career I always wanted, and my kids look up to me.

Insider Today

My college journey began at 40 years old when I enrolled in a community college .

Not only was I starting college later in life, but I was also doing it as a mother of five children — ages 8 to 14. I decided it was time to start my education again because I wanted to prove my father wrong. When I was young, he told me I wasn't smart enough to attend college . I finally had the confidence to give it a go and majored in English and communications. I wanted to prove to myself and my children I could do it.

As my schoolwork ramped up, my family obligations didn't let up. I was finally a student, but I was also the taxi driver, the laundress, the cook, the teacher, and the religious educator. I drove my children to three different schools each morning.

With the help of my husband , here's how I got my college degree and raised my kids.

My schedule was chaos for years

Motherhood is a full-time job, but I had to find a way to fit my classes and schoolwork into my week.

I quickly learned that coursework is performed more outside of class than in, so I had to make time for reading, studying, written work, and research papers. I included the children in my studies, sharing what I learned in the classroom at dinner or while driving them to activities. It helped me to understand if I explained the material to someone else.

I didn't realize most colleges began classes before the public school system started their school year, which only complicated things. Plus, my spring breaks didn't coincide with the children's school breaks either. I used a neighbor to keep the children company while I was in class.

Related stories

Initially, I attended classes while my children were in school, praying no one got sick. Sometimes, I had a night course. Since my husband worked during the day, he was home at night. He took over helping the children in the evenings.

To make the schedule work, one thing had to go and that was cooking. I cooked only when absolutely necessary, which was on weekends. We reheated during the week or got pizza. Baking cookies and making bread as a family was a thing of the past for us.

I also had to say no to some of the children's activities. Sports, scouting events, and church functions disappeared. I just couldn't accomplish everything.

I had all my children help out around the house

From shopping and meal preparation to laundry and cleaning, everyone helped — regardless of their age. I had to discard those perfect housekeeping standards and just accept that my house wouldn't be perfect for a few years.

Whenever I did have to do something around the house, I multitasked. I recorded class notes on tapes and listened to them while doing laundry or preparing meals . When the children got tired of the recording, they left the room.

Food shopping became a family affair — performed only when the cupboards were almost bare. Since I used the time when the children were at school to attend classes and work on group projects with classmates, I had to go grocery shopping when they were all home. That meant they went with me to the store; it wasn't easy.

I'm glad it all worked out in the end

With the children growing up before my eyes, I decided to continue my education after community college. I earned a prestigious scholarship and enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania.

After 10 years, I earned my degree in English. I now write for magazines and anthologies and facilitate writing workshops.

Looking back, I can see my kids definitely looked up to me. They realized how I tried not to let my attending college interfere with family responsibility. For that, they are grateful, especially now that three of them are parents. And I helped all of them get into and excel in college.

I may have started college to help my children and to prove my father wrong, but I finished to help myself. I learned that college is worth the effort.

Paul Auster.

Paul Auster, American author of The New York Trilogy, dies aged 77

The writer of The New York Trilogy, Leviathan and 4 3 2 1 – known for his stylised postmodernist fiction – has died from complications of lung cancer

‘A literary voice for the ages’: Paul Auster remembered by Ian McEwan, Joyce Carol Oates and more

Paul Auster – a life in quotes

Paul Auster – a life in pictures

Paul Auster, the author of 34 books including the acclaimed New York Trilogy, has died aged 77.

The author died on Tuesday due to complications from lung cancer, the Guardian has been told.

Auster became known for his “highly stylised, quirkily riddlesome postmodernist fiction in which narrators are rarely other than unreliable and the bedrock of plot is continually shifting,” the novelist Joyce Carol Oates wrote in 2010.

His stories often play with themes of coincidence, chance and fate. Many of his protagonists are writers themselves, and his body of work is self-referential, with characters from early novels appearing again in later ones.

“Auster has established one of the most distinctive niches in contemporary literature,” wrote critic Michael Dirda in 2008. “His narrative voice is as hypnotic as that of the Ancient Mariner. Start one of his books and by page two you cannot choose but hear.”

The author was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1947. According to Auster, his writing life began at the age of eight when he missed out on getting an autograph from his baseball hero, Willie Mays, because neither he nor his parents had carried a pencil to the game. From then on, he took a pencil everywhere. “If there’s a pencil in your pocket, there’s a good chance that one day you’ll feel tempted to start using it,” he wrote in a 1995 essay .

While hiking during a summer camp aged 14, Auster witnessed a boy inches away from him getting struck by lightning and dying instantly – an event that he said “absolutely changed” his life and that he thought about “every day”. Chance, “understandably, became a recurring theme in his fiction,” wrote the critic Laura Miller in 2017. A similar incident occurs in Auster’s 2017 Booker-shortlisted novel 4 3 2 1: one of the book’s four versions of protagonist Archie Ferguson runs under a tree at a summer camp and is killed by a falling branch when lightning strikes.

Auster studied at Columbia University before moving to Paris in the early 1970s, where he worked a variety of jobs, including translation, and lived with his “on-again off-again” girlfriend, the writer Lydia Davis, whom he had met while at college. In 1974, they returned to the US and married. In 1977, the couple had a son, Daniel, but separated shortly afterwards.

Auster and Siri Hustvedt at home in Brooklyn in 2020.

In January 1979, Auster’s father, Samuel, died, and the event became the seed for the writer’s first memoir, The Invention of Solitude, published in 1982. In it, Auster revealed that his paternal grandfather was shot and killed by his grandmother, who was acquitted on grounds of insanity. “A boy cannot live through this kind of thing without being affected by it as a man,” Auster wrote in reference to his father, with whom he described himself having an “un-movable relationship, cut off from each other on opposite sides of a wall”.

Auster’s breakthrough came with the 1985 publication of City of Glass, the first novel in his New York trilogy. While the books are ostensibly mystery stories, Auster wielded the form to ask existential questions about identity. “The more [Auster’s detectives] stalk their eccentric quarry, the more they seem actually to be stalking the Big Questions – the implications of authorship, the enigmas of epistemology, the veils and masks of language,” wrote the critic and screenwriter Stephen Schiff in 1987.

Auster published regularly throughout the 80s, 90s and 00s, writing more than a dozen novels including Moon Palace (1989), The Music of Chance (1990), The Book of Illusions (2002) and Oracle Night (2003). He also became involved in film, writing the screenplay for Smoke, directed by Wayne Wang, for which he won the Independent Spirit award for best first screenplay in 1995.

after newsletter promotion

In 1981, Auster met the writer Siri Hustvedt and they married the following year. In 1987 they had a daughter, Sophie, who became a singer and actor. Auster’s 1992 novel Leviathan, about a man who accidentally blows himself up, features a character called Iris Vegan, who is the heroine of Hustvedt’s first novel, The Blindfold.

Auster was better known in Europe than in his native United States: “Merely a bestselling author in these parts,” read a 2007 New York magazine article , “Auster is a rock star in Paris.” In 2006, he was awarded Spain’s Prince of Asturias prize for literature, and in 1993 he was given the Prix Médicis Étranger for Leviathan. He was also a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

In April 2022, Auster and Davis’s son, Daniel, died from a drug overdose. In March 2023, Hustvedt revealed that Auster was being treated for cancer after having been diagnosed the previous December. His final novel, Baumgartner, about a widowed septuagenarian writer, was published in October.

Auster is survived by Hustvedt, their daughter Sophie Auster, his sister Janet Auster, and a grandson.
