Hausa Writing

Literate Hausa speakers use one of two writing systems. The “official” Hausa orthography uses the Roman alphabet augmented by the following special symbols:

In addition to the “hooked letters” and the apostrophe marking glottal stop, there are several other features of the Romanized orthography worthy of note:

All commercially published books and nearly all Hausa language newspapers use the Romanized orthography including these symbols. Documents in Hausa have been printed in Romanized form since the late 19th century, but the current version was introduced for official used by the British colonial administration in the 1930’s. A similar Roman orthography has been adopted for Hausa publications in Niger. The Nigerien version of the orthography has an additional special symbol (represented in the Nigerian orthography as  ‘y ):

Writing Hausa using the Arabic alphabet:  ajami

The other writing system in use by Hausa speakers is the Arabic alphabet. The Arabic alphabet, when used for writing Hausa, is referred to as  ajami . Learned people have written Hausa in  ajami  since at least the early 19th century, when it was pressed into use primarily to write Islamic poetry in praise of Allah and the Prophet and to expound Islamic doctrine.  Ajami  continues to be used by many Hausas, especially in the composition of poetry, though there is at least one newspaper in Arabic orthography and a number of books have been published in Arabic orthography. Arabic orthography adapts quite well to Hausa. The two languages have exactly the same syllable inventory, viz. CV (consonant followed by a short vowel), CVV (consonant followed by a long vowel), and CVC (syllable closed by a single consonant). The sound systems of the two languages also overlap to a great degree, making it possible to use the Arabic orthography to represent Hausa with only a few minor adaptations.

There is no “standard” for writing Hausa in  ajami  and hence, there is variation in the way writers represent Hausa in this orthography. Following is a list of all the consonant sounds of Hausa in the standard Roman orthography (in Roman alphabetical order) together with their equivalents in a fairly commonly used variety of ajami. Examples of written Hausa below illustrate some of the variants:

Vowels, vowel length, and tone

Hausa has five vowel qualities, which the Romanized orthography represents by the normal five vowel symbols of the Roman alphabet. Hausa has distinctive  vowel length , i.e. “long” vowels actually have longer duration in pronunciation than their “short” counterparts. Hausa is also a  tone language , i.e. the relative pitch of the voice from syllable to syllable is distinctive.

The standard Roman orthography marks neither vowel length nor tone. To correctly read words in this orthography, one must therefore know whether a vowel is long or short and whether a syllable is pronounced on a relatively higher or lower pitch than contiguous syllables. Because vowel length and tone are crucial to the Hausa sound system, pedagogical works, reference works, and scientific works on Hausa usually mark tone and vowel length.

Vowels and vowel length in  ajami :  The Arabic writing system ( ajami ) has one advantage over the standard Roman orthography. Standard Arabic, like Hausa, distinguishes long and short vowels. Thus, when Hausa speakers write Hausa using  ajami , they show vowel length as is normally done in Arabic, i.e. with the normal vowel points and  alif  showing long  a ,  waw showing long  u , and  ya  showing long  i .

Arabic does not have the vowels  e  and  o . When Hausa speakers write Hausa using  ajami , they use the same symbols to write both  o  and  u  (both long and short). One must therefore know the words to know which vowel,  o  or  u , is intended.  Ajami  does have a way to distinguish  e  from other vowels. A large point or dot under a consonant shows vocalization with a short  e , and that dot, supplemented with a vertical stroke above the consonant shows vocalization with a long  e . The following examples show all the vocalizations with the consonant  t :

The transcriptions show vowel length with a macron over the vowel and low tone with a grave accent (`). In the standard writing system found in printed books, the diacritic marks over vowels would be absent.

A History Of Hausa Architecture

The Hausa are the largest ethnic group in West and Central Africa made up of a diverse but culturally homogeneous people, predominantly based in the Sahelian and savannah areas of southern Niger and northern Nigeria. Today, with close to 82 million descendants and significant indigenised populations spread across Benin, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Chad, Sudan, Republic of the Congo, Togo, Ghana, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Senegal and Gambia, the Hausa were once best known for fishing, hunting, agriculture, salt-mining, and blacksmithing. Historically, the communities resided in small villages as well as in precolonial towns and cities where they would grow crops, raise livestock, including cattle, as well as engage in trade, both locally and long distance across Africa.

While in more recent times, the penchant for foreign tastes, in terms of building form, aesthetics and materials, underpinned by colonial influences and the modern trends of the time, has come to the forefront of African architecture, the Hausa style remains a vital and influential traditional mode of building in the continent. Hausaland, historically a collection of states started by the Hausa people, situated between the Niger River and Lake Chad, boasts countless inventive building forms, bursting with colourful motifs, decorations and innovative uses of interior space. Characterised by vaults and piers, beautifully decorated walls, slashes and punctures, archways, and motifs in various proportions, Hausa buildings are impressive feats of both art and design.

For millennia, the main materials used in traditional African construction have been earth, stone, and straw, which have been skilfully utilised respectively and in combination. Though few original earth structures remain, aside from a number of carefully preserved monuments, temples, and mosques, this method of building continues to be an enduring cultural practice among rural communities throughout the continent. Traditionally, Hausa builders have considered the roof as the most challenging part of the construction, both owing to the technology required to support the structure and the decoration that is applied to it. The conventional method of building saw walls being made thicker to meet the structural requirements of the roof; this was done partly to be safe and partly because the thick walls kept the inside rooms cooler.

Customarily, the architectural decorations which envelop Hausa structures are carried out by accomplished engravers, traditional builders who like artisans are highly skilled at handwork and can draw out freehand patterns directly onto the surface of walls before carving out their designs. Consequently, the complexity of a facade decoration usually demonstrates the wealth and social standing of the property’s owner. Another key element of Hausa architecture are the pinnacles, or Zankwaye . Zankwaye are a classic feature of the Hausa building, manifesting in various shapes and sizes, and giving the structures their characteristic form. Like the horns of a bull, Zankwaye were originally reinforced vertical projections around the parapet wall of the roof, handily providing builders with a way to climb up onto the roof during construction or repairs.

Taking into account spaces for social activities as well as lighting and ventilation, a traditional Hausa residence is ideally split into three parts, following a layout that includes an inner core, designated as the private area, a central core, which is considered as semi-private, and an outer core, which is deemed public and is open to visitors. At the centre of the compound is an open courtyard, where the family spends the best part of their days, providing the setting for various household activities as well as important ceremonial rituals. The inner core also connects with a backyard space to keep animals and manage the disposal of household waste. WEEK 2: THE FOURTEEN HAUSA STATES IN PRE-COLONIAL NIGERIA

Hausa states were of two distinct groups. The first group consisted of seven states called the “Hausa Bokwoi” states. The other groups consisted of the remaining seven states, and were called the “Seven Illegitimate or Banza States”.

The word “Banza” is an Hausa word meaning Bastard. The Hausa “ Bokwoi” states includes; Daura, Gabir, Zaria, Katsina, Kano, Rano and Bilina.

The “ Banza” or Bastard state includes the Yoruba town of llorin, Yauri, Jakun, Kebbi, Zamfara, Nupe and Yaura.

At the Beginning of the 19 th century, those fourteen states were forced to quit the political theatre of West Africa. This was as a result of the Sokoto Jihad declared and fought by a tribe called “the Fulani” against Hausa states.

The Hausas were defeated because they were weak and disunited. This defeat marked the end of what used to be the fourteen ancient Hausa states.

• TRADE RELATIONS

The Northern states established flourishing trade relations by which they were able to push further their inter-tribe relations with Oyo, Benin, Igala, Itsekiri in the west, the Igbos in the East. Through the chain of territorial cooperation, they established trade links with Mali, Ghana, Cote-divore and with North Africa.

The births of Islam encouraged inter states trade and in few cases, inter tribal marriage in line with the Islamic tenants. Generally, their economy revolved around common agricultural products, blacksmithing, leather works, art and craft textile technology, the trans Saharan trade and to some extent fishing.

On  the western and forest zone, the Yoruba kingdom forged an internal unity which promoted internal and external trade and commerce. lle-ife provided a rallying point for commercial exchange for the Oduduwa descendants. The region was naturally positioned to enjoy borderline patronage. They shared borders with Benin empire which gave them access to the Niger Delta and the Igbo trade and cultural links.

Through the Igala, Nupe, Bornu and Kwara, they were able to establish trade and cultural link with the vast north. They interacted with Ghana, Benin republic and Togo through Badagry and Lagos. Being a major gateway to international trade and commerce, it was insulated (shielded) from inter-tribal wars to dominance. It therefore enjoyed relative peace.

The Igbos of the hinterland mainly restricted themselves to trading with the Niger Delta states which served them as their gateway to external trades involving the Yoruba’s, parts of the North and Cameroons. The Niger Deltans served as middle men and equally became a buffer that shielded the hinter land Igbo’s from uncertainties. The area was rich in agricultural and forestry products, fishing arts and crafts, salves and palm products which attracted the merchant in the 19 th Century.

The riverine nature of the Niger Delta States brought the Europeans into contact with them. This led to the development of Calabar, Bonny and Asaba sea ports and cities.

There were signs to show that there was social and economic interactions among the pre-colonial centres of civilization. These interactions were at some points direct and at some points indirect. These areas of interaction were prominent in the areas of trade, marriage, cultural ties religions, warfare, common ancestral ties/origin, language, arts, crafts and migration.

Each society had a way of linking itself to the outside world. Some states served as buffer states which facilitated the trans-Atlantic and Trans-Saharan trades. These buffer states experienced wars, trade benefits and integration of civilization.

They easily became advanced and developed into cities in modern day Nigeria. They include Kano, Jos, Igbo Ukwu/Onitsha, Benin City, Ibadan, Lagos, Calabar, Bonny/Port Harcourt, Ile-Ife, Warri among others.

The coming of the white men suddenly changed the pace, tune, volume and directions of these relationships by producing new ways of trade commerce, social exchange, governments and technology.

A 16-year-old North Carolina high school student says he was suspended just for saying “illegal alien” while discussing word meaning in English class — possibly ruining his chances of landing a college sports scholarship.

Christian McGhee, a student at Central Davidson High School in Lexington, received a three-day suspension last week after he used the term in English class, the Carolina Journal reported .

His mother, Leah McGhee, said his teacher had given an assignment that used the word “alien,” and Christian asked: “Like space aliens or illegal aliens without green cards?”

Another student reportedly took offense and threatened to fight Christian, so the teacher took the matter to the assistant principal, according to the Carolina Journal.

Eventually, his words were determined to be offensive and disrespectful to Hispanic classmates, so he was suspended.

 “I didn’t make a statement directed towards anyone — I asked a question,” Christian told the outlet.

“I wasn’t speaking of Hispanics because everyone from other countries needs green cards, and the term ‘illegal alien’ is an actual term that I hear on the news and can find in the dictionary,” he added.

The suspension may also affect the student-athlete’s prospects of securing a college sports scholarship, the Journal noted.

“Because of his question, our son was disciplined and given THREE days OUT of school suspension for ‘racism,’” Leah wrote in an email describing the incident.

“He is devastated and concerned that the racism label on his school record will harm his future goal of receiving a track scholarship. We are concerned that he will fall behind in his classes due to being absent for three consecutive days,” she added in the message, which was shared with the outlet.

The irate mom said the assistant principal has refused to remove the suspension from the boy’s record, so the family has hired an attorney.

On Tuesday, Leah appeared on “The Pete Kaliner Show,” which airs on radio station WBT, and said her family had once lived in England, and Christian mentioned how Britons also need green cards to live in the US, Newsweek reported . She said she and her husband told the assistant principal that “illegal alien” is a term their son can look up in a dictionary. “It is a term used as federal code, and it is a term that is heard frequently on many news broadcasts,” Leah said on the show. “I feel that if this was handled properly in the classroom, it could have easily been used as a teachable moment for everyone.”

Republican state Sen. Steve Jarvis said he has contacted the school district superintendent about the matter — but he has not yet taken a stance on what should be done.

“I do not see that that would be an offensive statement, just in getting clarification,” Jarvis told the Journal. “But there again, I don’t know. I don’t know the situation of this particular incident.”

A staffer at Central Davidson High School told Newsweek that they could not comment about a specific student due to federal protections.

“Please know that Davidson County Schools administrators take all discipline incidents seriously and investigate each one thoroughly,” the rep told the mag. “Any violation of the code of conduct is handled appropriately by administrators.”

The student handbook says that “schools may place restrictions on a student’s right to free speech when the speech is obscene, abusive, promoting illegal drug use, or is reasonably expected to cause a substantial disruption to the school day,” the Carolina Journal reported.

This example shows how assignment rules can be set up to assign different ownership definitions to different types of transactions in a joint venture.

In this example, a joint operating agreement includes terms for splitting costs and revenue among the managing partner and the three partners of a joint venture. Most of the expenses and revenue have the same terms for the split, except for costs related to site materials, maintenance, and labor. In the agreement, each of these types of costs has a different percentage split.

The managing partner creates a joint venture definition with the following details:

• Identification of distributable accounts.

Before creating assignment rules to assign ownership definitions to cost transactions, the managing partner sets up account sets to use in the assignment rules. The account sets identify the following accounts:

• Material accounts: 515600–515950
• Maintenance accounts: 525400–525410
• Labor accounts: 536051–536100

Next, the managing partner creates the following assignment rules, associating each account set to the appropriate ownership definition:

After activating the joint venture definition, account sets, and assignment rules, the managing partner sets up the Identify Joint Venture Transactions process to process transactions for the joint venture. The process uses the primary segment values in the joint venture definition to identify all joint venture costs and revenue for distribution. It then processes the assignment rules according to the sequence number and assigns ownership definitions to each type of cost transaction according to the details in the assignment rules.

This is a simplified scenario, but you can also set up assignment rules to accommodate more complex joint operating agreements. You can set up an assignment rule to assign a single stakeholder to a set of transactions. How Draymond Green and Trayce Jackson-Davis have revived the Warriors' defense

Warriors finish regular season with win over Jazz (2:11)

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS guard Chris Paul called it the best defensive play he had seen in his 19-year career.

With 1:30 left in the fourth quarter against the Dallas Mavericks on April 2 and the Warriors holding a 98-92 lead, Mavericks guard Luka Doncic feigned a dribble penetration from the top of the 3-point line before dishing the ball to guard Kyrie Irving . As Warriors forward Draymond Green roamed the paint, Irving sidestepped the defending Andrew Wiggins , took two steps toward Green and then passed to center Daniel Gafford near the baseline.

Just as quickly, Green changed his positioning and met Gafford at the rim for a spectacular block. Green ripped the rebound away from Irving, firing up the Chase Center crowd, with the Warriors then holding on for a 104-100 win.

"We're starting to understand that defense is going to be what we have to hang our hat on," Paul said after the game. "Then on offense, we of course have amazing shooters and scorers. But when we defend, it opens everything else up."

Draymond Green's big-time block on Daniel Gafford keeps the Warriors ahead late in the fourth quarter.

The team has fought through several on-court issues this season, including Green's suspensions and late-game struggles, Stephen Curry 's drop in offensive production since the All-Star break and Thompson finishing the regular season with his lowest scoring average since 2013-14.

But the victory against Dallas was part of a six-game winning streak fueled by an improved defense led by Green and the emergence of rookie center Trayce Jackson-Davis .

Golden State enters Tuesday's play-in tournament game against the Sacramento Kings with 10 wins in its final 12 regular season games. The Warriors also boast the league's seventh-best defense since the All-Star break and are fifth in defensive efficiency since Jackson-Davis entered the starting lineup March 27.

The Warriors' road back to the playoffs remains tough. They'll need to win back-to-back road games just to secure a first-round series against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder .

But it was only three weeks ago when the Warriors were in danger of falling out of the postseason picture completely. On March 24, the Warriors started a crucial five-game road trip by losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves , which left them only a game over the Houston Rockets in the battle for 10th place.

However, the Warriors responded by winning their next four games -- all on the road -- before the home win against the Mavericks. During that streak, the Warriors held their opponents to 99.0 points per game, the franchise's fewest over a five-game span since January 2022.

"We've seen teams in this league for years that made the mistake of thinking they can just put a great offense out there and their defense sucks and think they're going to win," Green said after the Mavericks game. "As you run up against [a] team that is ... just competent on the offensive end but they play defense, you're going to lose."

Any postseason success will require Jackson-Davis, along with Green and veteran center Kevon Looney , to go up against a play-in field that includes All-Star big men such as the Kings' Domantas Sabonis or the Los Angeles Lakers ' Anthony Davis .

"Those assignments, I mean, it's all against some of the best players," Jackson-Davis told ESPN. "I know I'll have to lean on my veterans -- Draymond, Kevon. Those guys are really going to help me. And I know the preparation will be different, there will be a lot more of it. But I feel like I'm ready to tackle that challenge."

AFTER THE LOSS to the Timberwolves on March 24, Green had a harsh assessment of his team's defense.

"We have too many breakdowns," Green said. "You just can't win having breakdowns. When you have breakdowns, it changes momentum. And momentum in this league is not easy to get back."

The Warriors led the Wolves by as much as 12 points in the first half. They were up 70-65 with just over four minutes left in the third quarter when the Wolves then picked apart Golden State on a run that included six 3-pointers, including three by guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker . With Curry on the bench during that stretch and not returning until the 6:54 mark in the fourth, the Wolves went on a 32-19 run that then led to a 114-110 win.

"We're a very quiet team. So, you have issues on defense when you have bad communication," Green added. The Warriors' fourth-quarter defense -- which ranked 29th in defensive efficiency at the time -- had been a season-long issue. Defending the rim was one particular sore spot; Golden State was third worst in the league in field goal percentage allowed on layups and dunks in the fourth quarter.

Two days after the Wolves game, the Warriors bounced back with a 113-92 road win over the Miami Heat . With Jonathan Kuminga sitting out the following day's game in Orlando, Florida, because of knee tendonitis, Warriors coach Steve Kerr placed Jackson-Davis in the starting five. The rookie responded with eight points and 14 rebounds in the 101-93 win. Green was ejected four minutes into the game, but the duo quickly found a rhythm in the frontcourt over their next matchups.

In an April 4 win against the Rockets, Jackson-Davis spent time in the first half defending Houston guard Amen Thompson , while Green roamed as a paint defender. But in the second half, when Thompson began running more downhill and in transition, the Warriors' duo switched assignments.

"If I'm the 5, I'm the last line of defense," Green said after the game. "So the things that I do off of instinct or reading the game on the fly, it's harder to do. If I just go run over here to cover up something I see needs to be covered, that's leaving the rim unprotected ... but if I know the rim is protected by Trayce, I can just go do it."

Giving Green the ability to roam has helped Jackson-Davis hold opponents to 48% shooting in the paint as the contesting defender, which ranks ninth among players to contest more than 500 shots this season, per Second Spectrum tracking.

"Being able to tic-tac and interchange with him is great," Jackson-Davis said. "The things he teaches me, positioning and stuff of that nature, it's helped my game a lot."

Jackson-Davis and Green, who started 10 games together, finished the season with a 99.2 defensive efficiency as a duo, which ranks in the top 10 among all two-man lineups to play more than 225 minutes this season, according to ESPN Statistics & Information research.

"Trayce is wise beyond his years," Kerr told ESPN. "He is not a typical rookie these days, with four years of college experience and a lot of games played under his belt. He's gotten great experience the last couple of months."

AFTER SUNDAY'S WIN against the Utah Jazz to wrap up the regular season, all eyes turned to Tuesday's matchup: the play-in game between the 9-seed and 10-seed in Sacramento. The Kings provide an interesting defensive task for Golden State.

Led by their All-Star duo in Sabonis and guard De'Aaron Fox , rim protection and paint defense will be key for the Warriors.

"Everything starts with the head of the snake -- Sabonis and Fox -- and then everyone else gets their [offense] off of those two guys," Green said after the Jazz win. "We know [the Kings] well, they know us well, so there won't be any surprises."

The two teams met in the first round of the playoffs last season, with the Warriors eliminating the Kings in seven games. This season, three of their four meetings have been decided by one point, including Sacramento's 134-133 win in late January that saw the Kings hit 22 3-pointers on 48 attempts.

During the playoffs last season, Looney was primarily tasked with defending Sabonis. He was during this regular season, as well. According to Second Spectrum, Looney has defended Sabonis for 658 half-court matchups for their careers, including regular season and playoffs. That is the most by any player against Sabonis.

Even with Jackson-Davis taking over the majority of Looney's minutes in the rotation, the challenge remains the same in stopping Sacramento's star big man.

"At the center spot, you've got to be super talkative, real disruptive," Looney told ESPN. "Those matchups are super key, trying to stop two guys who are All-NBA. I think Trayce, Draymond, myself, we have the talent to do that."

Slowing down Sabonis and Fox will be no easy task, specifically on dribble handoffs. The pair ran 285 total handoffs together this season (fifth most in the NBA among all duos), but the Warriors are ranked sixth at defending them (0.97 points per direct play).

"Sabonis does all his damage pretty much within 10 to 15 feet ... and Trayce can affect some of those shots," Green said. "It starts with positioning, and Sabonis is great at creating angles. Trayce has got to use what he has and his strengths, which is his athleticism and his length."

And should the Warriors advance, it gives Kerr that flexibility to either rely on the rookie big man or a front-court veteran in what is a win-or-go-home setting.

"I have a lot of confidence in having Loon, knowing that for a rookie it's a lot to ask him to go into a playoff game and play against great players, which is going to be the case," Kerr said. "It's a good situation to be in."
