Documentary programmes about foreign countries and their inhabitants, instructional programmes on science, medicine, engineering, natural history and many others are all brought to the homes of ordinary people, who without television would have nown very little or nothing about these things.

In connection to that, special School Television has been introduced in many parts of the world including Malaysia where Astro broadcast an educational channel specially designed for our schools in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Is Watching Tv A Waste Of Time

Watching TV Is A Waste Of Time

Is watching TV a waste of time? It depends on how you look at it. On one hand, TV can be a great way to unwind and relax after a long day. It can also be a great source of entertainment and information.

On the other hand, some people believe that TV is a major time waster. They argue that there are more productive things that could be done with that time, such as reading, exercising, or spending time with family and friends.

So, ultimately, it comes down to how you personally feel about TV. If you enjoy watching it and find it beneficial in some way, then it probably isn’t a waste of time for you. However, if you feel like you could be doing other things that are more productive or enjoyable, then it might be a good idea to cut back on your TV time.

It really just depends on what you watch and why you’re watching it. If you’re just mindlessly flipping through the channels, then it might be a waste of time. But if you’re deliberately choosing something to watch that you know you’ll enjoy or that will teach you something, then it’s probably not a waste of time.

Many people believe that television is one of the most important inventions of the past century. The debate over its value rages on, but no one can deny how significant television has had on society. Many individuals throughout the world would be unable to live a day without television. I believe watching television may be useful if we use it in moderation.

The main positive point of watching television is that it helps us to be informed about the events happening in the world. It can also be used as an educational tool. There are channels dedicated to news, history, science, and many other topics that can help us learn new things.

In addition, television can be a great source of entertainment. There are many different types of shows to suit everyone’s taste. We can watch comedies, dramas, thrillers, and much more. Television can also help us relax after a long day at work or school.

However, there are also some negative points to consider about television. One of the biggest problems is that it can be addictive and cause us to waste a lot of time. It is important to limit the amount of time we spend in front of the television and make sure that we are doing other things as well.

Another problem with television is that it can have a negative effect on our health. Too much sitting can lead to obesity and other health problems. Television also exposes us to a lot of advertising, which can be harmful to our wallets and our waistlines!

Overall, I think that watching television can be both good and bad, depending on how we use it. We should try to limit the amount of time we spend in front of the TV, and make sure that we are using it in a way that benefits us.

Television, in its many guises, is without a doubt one of the most important educational tools ever created. Documentary programs about other countries and their people, as well as instructional programs on science, medicine, engineering, natural history, and many other disciplines are all made available to the general public via television.

Secondly, television is an excellent source of entertainment. It can provide us with laughter and escapism when we need it most, and it can also educate and inform us about the world around us.

And finally, television can be a great way to connect with other people. Social media has made it possible for us to connect with friends and family all over the world, but there’s something special about being able to share a programme or film with somebody in real time.

So, while there are certainly some drawbacks to spending too much time in front of the TV, it’s important to remember that it’s not all bad. In moderation, television can be a force for good in our lives.

There’s no denying that television can be a great way to relax and unwind. But there’s also no denying that, for many people, watching TV is a huge time-waster.

Think about it – how many hours do you spend each week watching TV? How much of that time is spent actually engaged with the show or movie you’re watching, versus simply staring at the screen while your mind wanders?

And let’s not forget that, even when we are actively watching TV, we’re usually not doing anything else productive. We’re just sitting on the couch (or in bed) vegging out.

Now, don’t get us wrong – we’re not saying that you should never watch TV. But if you feel like you’re wasting too much time in front of the tube, it might be time to cut back.

There are plenty of other things you could be doing with your time that would be more productive, or at least more active.

So, next time you’re tempted to spend hours glued to the TV, ask yourself if there’s something else you could be doing with your time – something that would be more beneficial for your mind, body, and soul. Chances are, the answer will be yes.

In addition, in many countries, including Malaysia, Astro launched an educational channel specifically for our schools in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Because many of the programs are designed according to school curriculum, teachers may utilize the channel as a teaching tool.

Some of the programmes are also able to arouse students’ interest and increase their knowledge. However, many people think that watching television is a waste of time as it can negatively affect both our physical and mental health. It is true that if we spend too much time in front of the television, we can become lazy and our eyesight might deteriorate. In addition, we can also get addicted to certain programmes which can lead to social ills such as bullying.

TV as a buddy. TV has unquestionable value and usefulness as a companion to the elderly. People who don’t have anyone to speak with at night or when they’re off work are no longer lonely. The old can no longer attend cinemas or theaters, so they won’t be bored. After working long hours, we need rest and relaxation.

TV is an inescapable part of modern culture. It permeates our lives and has become a significant part of who we are. So it’s no surprise that the question of whether watching TV is a waste of time is a hotly contested one.

On the one hand, there are those who believe that TV is a valuable use of time. They argue that TV can be educational and informative, providing us with knowledge and insights that we wouldn’t otherwise have access to. They also believe that TV can be entertaining and relaxing, helping us to unwind after a long day.

On the other hand, there are those who believe that TV is a waste of time. They argue that most TV is low-quality, mindless entertainment that doesn’t really offer anything of value. They believe that we could be using our time more effectively if we weren’t watching TV.

So which side is right? Is watching TV a waste of time or not?

The answer, unfortunately, is that it depends. It all comes down to how you’re using your time when you’re watching TV. If you’re using your time wisely, then TV can be a valuable use of time. However, if you’re not using your time wisely, then TV can be a waste of time.

Let’s look at an example to see how this works in practice. Suppose you want to learn about a new topic. You could spend an hour watching a documentary about that topic on TV. This would be a wise use of your time, and you would likely come away from the experience having learned something valuable.

On the other hand, suppose you just want to veg out in front of the TV and watch whatever is on. In this case, you’re not using your time wisely, and you’re not likely to gain anything of value from the experience. This would be a waste of time.

The key, then, is to use your time wisely when you’re watching TV. If you do this, then TV can be a valuable use of time. However, if you don’t use your time wisely, then TV can be a waste of time. Choose your programming carefully and make sure you’re getting something out of it, and you’ll be able to avoid wasting time in front of the TV.

Is Watching TV Bad or Good? Essay

The television set is one of the most common products of technology in most homes. It is very hard to envision how life would be in the contemporary society without a television set, because although better media gadgets have been invented, for example, computers and smart phones, non of these gadgets receives wide acceptance like the TV.

One thing that has made TVs to be the most common electronic gadget is that, unlike in the past when TVs were only viewed as a source of updated information, presently TVs are also watched for recreational purposes, because of their numerous entertainment programs. Therefore, because TVs are watched by people of all classes, races, and ages, they have become one of the most effective means of communication in present societies.

On the other hand, although most TV programs are very relaxing and informative, some programs have bad influences and can act as an obstacle to development of good behaviour and certain skills more so in children, for example, language, motor and, social skills.

However, although such negative influences exist, if the watching is done in a responsible and controlled manner, watching television is one of the most beneficial activities that individuals can engage themselves in.

TVs are one of the primary sources of relaxing entertainment, because of their numerous entertainment programs with different story lines and features. For example, TVs have different comedy and music programs, which are very entertaining and can sometimes act as stress relievers.

Watching the TV is one of the most relaxing activities, because in most cases, as one is watching the television there is a tendency of the human mind to switch off from thinking about stressing activities and concentrating on the television program. In addition, most individuals usually prefer watching the TV as one of their primary recreation activities, because they can do other simple activities for example, dancing as they enjoy their favourite TV programs more so music programs.

Generally, although most individuals rarely appreciate that watching the television is one of the relaxing recreational activities, as they believe that watching the television is a waste of time, every minute spent on watching the TV responsibly is beneficial to the mental health of every person, as it takes away the human mind from the daily worries for a moment.

In addition to having numerous relaxing programs, the TV is a source of updated news of any form of developments and occurrences in the world. TV stations usually have their reporters in different parts of the world; hence, from time to time, through news programs, television programs are able to inform people and pass important messages that are necessary for improving the quality of life.

For example, without media such as the TV, it is very hard to know how the weather will be; hence, prepare in advance to avoid being caught in a mess. TVs usually have live programs, such as sports and numerous live events; hence, in addition to being entertainment gadgets, TVs are great source of information. Therefore, it will be purely wrong to argue that, a certain television program is a waste of time, because of the numerous benefits that are associated with watching of television programs.

Although the TV has numerous benefits, in uncontrolled TV watching scenarios, some TV programs encourage the development of bad habits and behaviour and can hamper development of important life skills. Watching TV programs is one of the most addictive activities. It is not unique to find an individuals switching of an educative program and switching to a non-educative program. For example, most young people have a tendency of liking program with explicit sexual content or numerous scenes of violence.

Majority of these programs are very misleading, and because some individuals more so the youth have a tendency of copying anything they see on television. Although its fun watching such programs, most individuals fail to differentiate reality from fiction; hence, such program can greatly corrupt and colonise people’s minds negatively.

On the other hand, because of the addictive nature of TV watching, the TV watching preoccupies most people’s times, something which can greatly hamper the development of important survival skills and abilities, such as social skills, language, and motor skills. Such is the case because TV watching is a passive activity; hence, in most cases it is an obstacle to exercising of initiative and application of critical and creative thinking. TVs are also full of commercial advertisements that portray dangerous goods to be good.

For example, Tobacco and junk food companies normally spend million of dollars to advertise their products, most of which are very harmful to the human healthy. Therefore, because of the curiosity to try out some things, some people will find themselves consuming some products against their will; products, which in most cases are very harmful to people’s health.

In conclusion, although some negative effects associated with watching of the television exist, in controlled cases, these are disadvantages that can be minimized and even be avoided. Therefore, watching television is very beneficial, a there exist numerous programs that are informative, educative, and very relaxing.

IELTS essay, topic: Reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time (agree/disagree)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

IELTS Model Essay Sample Band 8 January 2024

This essay topic was seen in recent IELTS test in UK .

Some say that reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time, because it has no direct connection with people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the digital era, there is a growing belief that newspapers and TV news are outdated since these traditional news sources have no direct relevance to people’s personal lives. I, however, disagree with this perspective as it overlooks the broader role of news in shaping an informed society.

watching tv is waste of time essay

It is crucial to understand that all forms of news offer useful insights into events that add to our overall understanding of the world. This awareness helps people to develop a more profound insight into the world beyond their own country. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, individuals need to be aware of global newsworthy situations as actions in one part of the globe can quickly cause ripple effects elsewhere. For example, during the Brexit negotiations, comprehensive news reports helped people worldwide understand the economic and political ramifications, not just for the UK and Europe, but for global trade and travel.

Another important point to consider is that news media act as watchdogs that hold those in power accountable. By reporting on government policies, societal issues, and public opinions, newspapers and TV news ensure that citizens are well-informed, which is essential for making responsible voting decisions. While it is true that the immediacy of social media and the internet might provide more direct engagement with our immediate interests, it would be a mistake to dismiss traditional news sources as outdated and irrelevant. Newspapers and TV news offer a broader, more in-depth perspective on the world, which is invaluable for developing a well-rounded worldview.

In conclusion, while newspapers and TV news might not always have a direct influence our personal daily experiences, their contribution to our understanding of the broader world, democracy, and social issues is significant. Dismissing them as a waste of time, in my view, overlooks the essential role they play in creating and shaping an informed society.

Teacher’s feedback:

Overall, the essay is a great example of Band 8 writing.

The argument is well-developed with relevant examples, such as the reference to Brexit negotiations, which effectively illustrate the importance of traditional news sources in providing a global perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8 The essay is well-organised and logically sequenced. Ideas are clearly laid out and easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as “Another important point to consider” and “In conclusion.” are used effectively. The summary provided in the conclusion reinforces the coherence in this essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 8 The essay uses a wide range of vocabulary appropriately and accurately. Terms like “interconnected,” “ripple effects,” and “watchdogs” demonstrate a strong command of language. The vocabulary is used precisely, enhancing the clarity of the argument.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8 The essay demonstrates a wide range of complex structures with high accuracy. Examples include: “By reporting on government policies, societal issues, and public opinions, newspapers and TV news ensure that citizens are well-informed.” The grammatical accuracy is consistently high, contributing to the clarity and sophistication of the essay.

10 Reasons Why Watching TV is a Waste of Time

Prachi Agrawal

TV has become a favorite pastime of almost everyone regardless of the age of the person. It has begun to rule our lives and dictate our daily routines. We have become much sensitive towards the imaginary characters as compared to the people around us.

It is not an exaggeration to say that we have forgotten to live our lives (Sitting on a couch while watching TV is definitely not a life lived well!).

Research has proven time and again that watching TV for long hours affects us and our minds negatively.

1. Watching TV Hampers creativity

Watching television hampers creativity. Although TV is the most popular source of entertainment, it leaves nothing to our imagination . Our brains become captives of the idiot box, and thus it is prevented from thinking anything beyond the shows on TV.

2. Watching TV is a Catalyst for unhealthy lives

Watching tv

Television shows increase the risks of insomnia as we are compelled to stick to the TV screen until the show(s) is over. It also gives rise to obesity as we continue to sit in a place for long hours and do nothing.

3. Watching TV Incubates laziness

Lazy person

Too much television turns us into couch potatoes. The precious time spent indulging in your hobbies or doing something productive such as reading a book , going for a walk, meeting a friend, writing a blog, drawing, etc., is wasted on watching useless stuff.

4. TV schedule rules our lives

When we become addicted to television, our lives begin to revolve around the TV schedules. We stop all our work for a particular time for a certain show(s). Don’t you think it should be the other way round? We should watch shows when we have free time and not be dictated by the timings of a show.

5. Watching TV Leads To Pointless discussions

friendly discussions

The harmful effects of TV are limited to the time we spend sitting in front of the goggle box. The thoughts about what happened to a certain someone or what story would the next episode unfold keeps striking our minds like a hammer, and we discuss the same things with our friends who watch the same shows. The time that can be spent discussing ideas or the important events of a real-world is wasted in talking about problems of hypothetical people living in a hypothetical world.

6. Unsatisfactory life

We are so enthralled by the happening and cool lives of the television characters that we begin to expect the same from our lives without even realizing it. The difference between the real and the unreal becomes blurred. When our expectations are not met, we are unsatisfied and disappointed, which affects our relationships with REAL people who find it hard to compete with the “ideal” characters of our favorite shows.

7. Real-life goes astray

While we want our lives to be as eventful and happening as those shown in the TV shows, we refuse to do anything about it. Nothing good will come our way if we continue to sit like an idiot watching television rather than meeting new people and exploring life. Television is not a substitute for a boring life. So, give your couch and that idiot box some rest and make life happen to you.

8. TV commercials

TV commercial

It’s impossible to get rid of TV commercials popping now and then between the shows. They not only make us feel irritated, but they also give us a sense of inadequacy in our lives. They make us buy stuff we don’t even need and thus make us spend unnecessarily.

9. Tick-tock, tick-tock

tick tock

TV makes us lose track of not only the reality but also time. We often watch TV for more than the intended duration of time and hence mess up our priorities. It is high time that we switch off our television sets and do some “time check” along with a “reality check.”

10. Think about it!

If you watch 6 hours of television every day, then you’re spending 2,190 hours in a year doing nothing. If you spend that time doing something productive, just imagine how you’re life would turn out to be! Therefore, if we assume the life expectancy to be 70 years, 153,300 hours, i.e., around 6,388 days or 11 years of your life, are wasted watching television.

Band 7+: Some say that reading newspapers and watching TV news is a waste of time, because it has no direct connection with people's lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In contemporary societies, newspapers and news broadcasted on TVs are seemingly not closely related to people’s daily lives. While I accept that consuming traditional media might result in a waste of time, I contend that they could provide useful information to the public.

There are several compelling reasons why the act of reading newspapers and watching news on TV is deemed as unnecessary. Firstly, the content of newspapers are overwhelmingly focus on International and political events, which have no direct impacts on people’s daily lives. For example, China Daily, one of the most famous official newspapers in China, attaches excessive importance on political issues, such as diplomatic relations, state visits or sovereignty disputes, making it boring for people to delve into. Likewise, TV nowadays prioritizes the broadcasting of sensational news, like celebrity rumours or natural disasters, so as to have a high audience rate. However, the pursuit of financial gain has altered the nature of newspapers, making the public want to keep away from them.

Nevertheless, I would like to argue that obtaining information on newspapers and TVs is useful for individuals to stay updated with societal trends and make adjustments if necessary. Newspapers still play a crucial role for people to gain insights into the development of society and economic trends. For example, newspapers, such as Financial Times, usually publish news articles about industry trends and unemployment rate. Information related to economic activities enable individuals to have a better understanding of current markets and make better preparation to adapt to it. Also, televised news usually shed light on issues that impacts community well-being and people’s daily routines, such as crime patterns, alerting the public to potential risks and enhancing their safety.

In conclusion, despite the irrelevance of newspapers and TVs to individuals’ lives, I am of the opinion that traditional media still serve as useful channels for people to stay informed and adapt to the ever-evolving modern society.

Essay topic

Some people think that watching sports in one’s free time is just a waste of time. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Sample response

Sports and games make people more active and healthier. However, just because someone watches a sporting event in their free time, it doesn’t mean that they will play it. Some people, therefore, feel that watching sports is a waste of time. This argument certainly sounds logical but I don’t agree with it.

Watching sports in one’s free time certainly doesn’t make one healthier. This, however, does not mean that watching sports is a waste of time. Someone who watches a game is more likely to play it than someone who doesn’t watch it at all.

The biggest benefit of watching sporting events is that it encourages the viewer to try their skills at those games. The vast majority of children and youngsters who watch football and cricket on television play these games when they opportunity. This improves their fitness levels. During such sessions, some children also discover their hidden talents. If they didn’t watch these games on television, they wouldn’t play them. Of course, a person who only watches a game and does not play it will not benefit much. All those hours spent in front of the TV can actually make them obese. Even so, there are several life lessons that we can learn from sports. The most important is the ability to accept success and defeat alike.

Another benefit of watching sporting events is that it provides entertainment and relaxation. Most of us lead extremely stressful lives these days. Sport provides relaxation and helps beat stress. There is one more reason to watch sports. Sporting events have become a major business. People who watch them on television or from a stadium are helping local and global economy in many ways.

To conclude, watching sporting events during one’s free time is not a waste of time. Someone who watches sports and games are also more likely to play them. This will have a positive impact on their health.
