This thesis explores topics in Agricultural Economics and is composed of five papers. In the first paper (Chapter 2), a latent-class stochastic frontier model is used to estimate efficiency scores of farmers in Ethiopia. Compared to conventional models, which assume a unique frontier, much lower inefficiencies are found, suggesting that part of the inefficiencies uncovered in the literature could be an artefact of the methods used. The second paper (Chapter 3) revisits the link between cereal diversity and productivity using a panel dataset in Ethiopia. The results suggest that the positive effect between cereal diversity and productivity becomes much smaller when households who produce teff (a low-productivity and high-value crop) are excluded from the sample, hinting at the possibility that results could be driven by yield differentials between cereals, rather than diversity. The third paper (Chapter 4) estimates the labour impacts of the adoption of Soil and Water Conservation technologies (SWC) in Ethiopia. The results suggest that adopting SWC technologies leads to an increase in adult and child labour. Understanding the labour impacts is important in itself, but it also raises concerns about using impact evaluation methods that require no change in inputs as an identifying assumption of impacts. Paper 4 (Chapter 5), assesses the pertinence of a drought index that has recently been proposed in the literature by Yu and Babcock (2010) and argues that it defines drought too narrowly. An extension to this index is proposed and we show, using a dataset of Indian districts, that the original index is likely to underestimate the impacts of drought. In Paper 5 (Chapter 6), we identify data-driven ranges of rainfall for which the marginal effects of a rainfall-temperature index (RTI) are different and then we discuss how the impacts of drought have changed over the 1966-2009 period in India. Finally, Chapter 7 concludes.

  • Thesis Topic This is the title of your paper, and it is important to pick something that is interesting. It should also have ample material for research.

⭐ What Does a Thesis in Economics Look Like?

A good thesis in economics is a blend between an empirical paper and a theoretical one. One of the essential steps in choosing a topic in economics is to decide which one you will write.

You may write, research, analyze statistical data and other information. Or build and study a specific economic model.

Or why not both!

Here are some questions you can ask when deciding what topic to choose:

  • What has already been written on this topic?
  • What economic variables will my paper study?
  • Where should I look for the data?
  • What econometrics techniques should I use?
  • What type of model will I study?

The best way to understand what type of research you have to do is to write a thesis proposal. You will most probably be required to submit it anyway. Your thesis supervisor will examine your ideas, methods, list of secondary and primary sources. At some universities, the proposal will be graded.

Master’s thesis and Bachelor’s thesis have three main differences.

After you get the initial feedback, you will have a clear idea of what to adjust before writing your thesis. Only then, you’ll be able to start.

📝 How to Select an Economics Thesis Topic

As your academic journey is coming to an end, it’s time to pick the right topic for your thesis. The whole academic life you were preparing to undertake this challenge.

Here is the list of six points that will help you to select an economics thesis topic:

  • Make sure it is something you are genuinely interested in. It is incredibly challenging to write something engaging if you are not interested in the topic. So, choose wisely and chose what excites you.
  • Draw inspiration from the previous student’s projects. A great place to start is by looking at what the previous students wrote. You can find some fresh ideas and a general direction.
  • Ask your thesis advisor for his feedback. Most probably, your thesis advisor supervised many students before. They can be a great help too because they know how to assess papers. Before meeting with your professor, do some basic research, and understand what topic is about.
  • Be original, but not too much. You do not want to spend your time writing about a project that many people wrote about. Your readers will not be interested in reading it, but your professors as well. However, make sure you do not pick anything too obscure. It will leave you with no secondary sources.
  • Choose a narrow and specific topic. Not only will it allow you to be more original, but also to master a topic. When the issue is too broad, there is just too much information to cover in one thesis.
  • Go interdisciplinary. If you find yourself interested in history, philosophy, or any other related topic, it can help you write an exceptional thesis in economics. Most of your peers may work on pure economics. Then, the interdisciplinary approach can help you to stand out among them.

Some universities ask their students to focus on topics from one discipline.

UC Davis Agricultural and Resource Economics

Are welcomes eric edwards and sara sutherland to the department.

  • Faculty Hires

April 29, 2024

The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics is pleased to welcome Dr. Eric Edwards and his wife Dr. Sara Sutherland to our department as an assistant professor and lecturer, respectively. Professor Edwards earned his Ph.D. in economics and environmental science from the University of California Santa Barbara and his B.S. in mathematics from the University of Idaho. Dr. Sutherland earned her Ph.D. in environmental science and management from the University of California Santa Barbara and her B.S. in psychology from Michigan State. They join ARE from North Carolina State University.

Edwards’ interest in economics arose while completing his MBA at the University of Rochester, “the MBA courses were all some version of applied economics, and I found it to be the way of thinking of the world that made sense.” The move from Idaho to New York also caused Edwards to reflect on the differences in natural and environmental resource endowments and patterns of resource management.

Edwards specializes in economic institutions and is especially interested in how property rights, quasi-governmental organizations (like special districts) and bureaucracies affect economic incentives and market outcomes related to land, water, and other environmental and natural resources. Edwards has spent his entire career at land grant universities—four years at Utah State and five and a half at NC State—doing applied research, teaching, and extension/outreach. In these roles he has focused his work on applied questions that relate to the agricultural mission of land grant universities; “The intersection of this focus on the land grant mission and my interest in institutions has led me to do research on a broad suite of issues including agricultural drainage districts, water rights on American Indian Reservations, and the environmental justice implications of water right transfers.”

Edwards is excited to be at a world-class research university with a strong contingent of researchers working on topics related to water and agriculture. He enjoys showing students how economics can improve their understanding and ability to interact with the world, in their careers and day-to-day lives, “once you understand the incentives, you understand behavior.” Dr. Edwards teaches Agricultural Policy, ARE 120, and Fundamentals of Organization Management, ARE 112.

Dr. Sutherland’s interests in economics and environmental management developed after a study abroad trip to Madagascar with the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State. She became interested in why some institutions were more successful than others at promoting conservation. After hearing an environmental economist from UC Santa Barbara discuss his work on making fisheries profitable and sustainable she thought, “this is exactly the sort of thing I am interested in.” That economist became her Ph.D. advisor at the UC Santa Barbara Bren School of Environmental Science & Management.

Sutherland’s research broadly focuses on the intersection of natural resource economics, regional economics, and political economy. As she began her Ph.D., Sutherland learned about the success of property rights in fisheries; “I was very curious as to how the institution of property rights in fisheries (ITQs) came about and why, if so successful, we don’t we see them everywhere. My dissertation addressed these questions by examining the political economy of ITQ adoption and distributional consequences of institution change.” Sutherland’s current research still focuses on the political economy of institutions and distributional consequences of policy.

Often Sutherland teaches economics to students with very little economics experience. She enjoys the opportunity to convince students of the usefulness of economics as a way of thinking about the world. She teaches Intermediate Microeconomics ARE 100A and 100B as well as Natural Resource Economics, ARE 175.

Both Edwards and Sutherland appreciate the bike culture of Davis and love that their kids can ride their bikes to school and all around town and that they can ride to campus. Their family loves spending time outdoors and enjoys skiing, running, hiking, mountain biking, and flyfishing.
