Crafting a heartfelt thank you message for a teacher or mentor can make all the difference in acknowledging their hard work and the impact they’ve had on your life. Here are some tips to help you create a meaningful note that truly expresses your gratitude.

First, take a moment to think about the specific things that the teacher or mentor has done for you. This could include lessons they’ve taught, new skills they’ve introduced, or the time and effort they’ve dedicated to your success. Use these thoughts to draft a personalized message that highlights these unique aspects. For example:

Dear Mrs. Brown,

Thank you for your continuous support and guidance throughout the school year. Your patience and dedication in teaching me algebra have made a significant difference in my understanding and confidence. I am truly grateful.

Make sure to provide context in your message. Explain how their support has helped you both academically and personally. Providing concrete examples can strengthen your thank you message and make it more memorable. Here’s an example:

Dear Mr. Johnson,

I wanted to express my gratitude for all the invaluable advice and encouragement you’ve given me during our mentorship. Your insights on pursuing a career in engineering have clarified my path forward, and the time you spent reviewing my college applications boosted my chances immeasurably. Thank you for being such a dedicated and inspiring mentor.

A touch of emotion can go a long way in conveying your appreciation. Don’t be afraid to show your feelings and express how their help and guidance have positively influenced your life. Example:

Dear Miss Lee,

You’re not just a wonderful teacher; you’re also a caring and supportive friend. Your wisdom and kindness have helped me through some tough times, and I’m so grateful to have had you in my corner. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.

A well-written, heartfelt note will mean a great deal to your teacher or mentor. It is an excellent way to demonstrate your appreciation and respect, while also reminding them of the powerful impact they have on their students’ lives.

With sincerest appreciation,

Let’s Hear it for the Coach: Appreciating Your Child’s Coach or Sports Mentor with a Note

Dear Coach Jackson,

We want to express our thanks for making our son, Tim Findley, feel a part of the volleyball team this year. If you recall, Tim transferred into the district in late October just after you had officially ended try-outs. You agreed to make an exception and let him try-out for the team the following week, and fortunately, you selected him for the starting line-up. That exception, in itself, could have created jealousies among other students.

We, as well as Tim, feared that might be the case. But as the season began, you planned some very important team-building, “bonding” experiences for the boys as you traveled to various tournaments to scout the opposition. Those trips especially gave the team members a chance to get to know Tim quickly one on one off the court. Those opportunities made the transition much easier for him in the new school.

And by the way, I might add that his grades have reflected a comfortable adjustment as well.

As you may have guessed, changing schools in the middle of the year is never a good situation for any student, but for an athlete, it can be disastrous. Such was not the case for Tim this year, thanks to you . We do appreciate your constant encouragement, your competent coaching, and your efforts to see that the college scouts take a look at your athletes. What more could parents ask?

I really appreciate your being so patient with him and working so hard to boost his confidence. The additional instruction you gave him after class really made a difference. Bruce is already looking forward to taking your Level 4 class next summer.

Special Circumstances: A Thank You Note to a Child’s Teacher, From the Parents

Dear Ms. Philly,

We so much appreciate the special attention you have given to Kelly while he has been hospitalized off and on throughout the year. As you know, such extended absences can play havoc with a child’s relationships with other students, and you have been particularly sensitive to making Kelly feel a part of the group when he was able to be in class.

Specifically, I want to thank you for the several occasions when you gave the other children time to make cards and write notes to Kelly. Not only were you teaching your fourth-graders writing skills, you were teaching them to care about other people. That, I’m sure, is a direct reflection of your own personal commitment to your students.

And what a wonderful idea to record their class parties and special days to send home for Kelly. Although he sometimes watched through tears of disappointment that he could not be part of the festivities, those tapes kept him in touch with his friends during a very difficult time.

I’m sure teachers hear complaints from time to time, but I wanted you to know that we in our household and neighbourhood are certainly singing your praises. Thank you so much for your dedication.

Teachers and teaching assistants spend a substantial amount of time with their class and have a profound influence on students, not only imparting curriculum knowledge, but teaching civility and morality as well.

Do Teachers Actually Like Notes from Students?

That’s an Affirmative, folks. Despite Teacher wish-lists reflecting ever-shrinking district budgets and resources, asking for all kinds of classroom supplies and things for extra-curricular activities, your teacher wants to be appreciated, and to hear about it. From you.

So yes, still, in this century even, teachers continue to extol the virtues of a good old-fashioned thank-you note . [ source : How to Thank a Teacher., George Lucas Educational Foundation ]

So give your teacher what they want. Or, if a teacher has gone the extra mile for you and others, nominate them for an award .

Don’t Stress, Keep it Simple and Write From the Heart

When writing a thank-you note to a teacher, don’t stress — keep the note short and sweet, but express your gratitude with sincerity. A heartfelt note means a lot to a teacher, and validates their efforts in class to effect positive change or to beneficially influence the lives of their students.

It’s so easy to get stuck trying to compose the perfect thank-you note for your teacher, but it’s more important to simply get something written down. Yes, words are necessary and important, but your gratitude shines through in the act of handing the note over, too. A poll asking teachers what gifts they appreciate most reveals that many teachers continue to extol the virtues of a good old-fashioned thank-you note.

Many days, that’s all we need — to connect .

You’ll find great pleasure in being the one to reach out and thank someone first, and know that years later, your teacher will find your note in an old dusty box of keepsakes, and know that it was all worth it.

Teachers work an average of 53 hours per week with little recognition. They often use their own salary to cover supplies in their classrooms for special projects and activities in order to help the students learn and grow.

How to Write A Thank-You Note

Address the teacher.

Start off by addressing the teacher directly with the proper prefix. Are they a Mr., Mrs., or Ms.?

When writing the greeting, start with “Dear” or “To” with their name, followed by a comma.

Why are you thankful?

Let your teacher know why you are thankful for what they helped you with. Did they stay with you after school to make sure you understood that math concept? Did they support you in a school event or activity? Did they cheer you on at your school basketball game?

Keep it authentic

Be honest and real about why you are writing the thank you note. Maybe you didn’t have the best work ethic at the start of the year and your teacher pushed you to work harder, be honest and state that.

Say thank you!

Even though it may be implied in the fact that you wrote something for your teacher, be sure that included within your letter are the words “Thank you.”

Finish off the letter with a closing. You can use “Sincerely,” “Warm regards,” or “All the best.”

Types of Thank-You Notes

Some students may want to draw a colorful message, or create a piece of art as a show of appreciation for their teacher.

Making comparisons.

Some thank-you letters to teachers capture classroom sentiments with sweet similes, for example: You make my day shine like millions of diamonds.

Memories from the beginning of the year

There are thank-you letters to teachers that reminisce about the beginning of the school year. For example, “When it was the first day, I was thinking you would be strict, but I was wrong!”

Future promises

Student thank-you notes may come with promises about the future, for example: “I’ll come visit you next year!” or “I’ll keep in touch after I graduate.”

Memorable classes

Students may want to highlight their most memorable classes, for example: “Our class party was so much fun.”

Reference milestones

In your thank-you note you may want to include reference to major milestones that we’ll remember too: “I wrote my first paragraph in your class”.

Thank-You Notes From Parents to Teachers

Some parents would like to thank teachers on behalf of their child, they can do so by taking the time to explain why they are grateful for all of the teacher’s efforts.

Here is an example template to use when writing a thank-you letter for your child’s teacher.

“Dear Ms. Cambell,

Thank you so much for spending extra time after school helping (child) with his/her Science questions. We are pleased to see how much more confident (s)he’s grown as (s)he gets higher and higher grades on each test. You’ve made a huge impact on his/her success!

All the best,

Mrs. Smith, (Child)’s Mom”

Types of Thank-You Notes for Professors

Letter of appreciation.

Write a letter to your professor to thank them for the extra effort they put in to ensuring your success.

Thank you for sponsorship

This could be sponsorship for an internship you needed for your studies. Let them know what lessons you took away from that experience, as well as the specific ways they helped you.

Thank you for your contribution to my life

How did the knowledge you learned from this professor’s class contribute to the life you have now?

Thank you for teaching me thoroughly

Thank your professor for the depth in which they taught you and for the way they helped you dissect information in class.

Thank you for your effort

If there was an area you struggled in but the effort on the teacher’s part helped you overcome that struggle, then you should thank them for it.

Thank you for scholarship referral

If your professor has written you a scholarship referral, send them a thank-you letter.

How to Structure the Letter

Address the teacher directly.

When you write your professor a thank-you letter, be sure to address them directly.

Keep it to the point

By writing a lengthy message your point may get lost in what you wrote. Keep your thank-you letter short and to the point.

Write the letter by hand

By writing the thank-you letter by hand, you are showing that you took the time and effort to craft this letter.

Tips and Tricks for Writing a Thank-You Letter

Use one format.

Use the same format you would as writing a letter, and stick with that format throughout.

Be short and sweet

No need to drag the letter out, know why you are thanking the teacher or professor and stick to that.

Be respectful

The language in your letter should be polite, respectful, or considerate in your manner.

Don’t exaggerate, keep it simple

There is no need to over-embellish your gratitude or what you are thankful for. A simple note, even with one or two lines can be very heartfelt and well received.

Thank-You Letter Examples

As Mary’s English teacher you have been such an amazing support and mentor for her. Thank you so much for all the time, energy and creative efforts you have put into the class to ensure the students had a wonderful time learning. You have inspired Mary to take up reading as a hobby in a way she never has before. I am sure she will always look back at this time in her life and remember you as being one of her most important teachers. We definitely will!

I would like to thank you for your patience with me this year. Thank you for your time. Thank you for helping me with my homework each time I asked for it, no matter how busy you were at the moment. Thank you for sitting with me and listening to me when I had no one else to turn to. You were my biggest cheerleader and support and I will never forget you for that. Thank you for explaining things to me 20 different ways until I finally understood. Thank you for pushing me to do my best. Thank you for being my teacher.

Thank-You Letters to Teachers

Student thanking teacher with note

Sometimes we forget the impact that we have as teachers. Schools are busy places, and teachers are busy people, so it’s not surprising that sometimes we miss out on chances to stop and reflect upon the influence that we wield over the young people in our care. Often, it’s the little conversations, the easily-forgotten asides, the friendly smile or brief compliment that mean the most to young people – and while we might forget them by the time it comes to write the next report or plan the next lesson, those words can remain with a young person for a very long time, shaping their personality and their thoughts.

So, thank you to all the teachers out there. To show you how powerful you are, as individuals and as a profession, here are a collection of ‘Thank-You’ letters written by students thanking the teacher who, in his or her inimitable way, changed their lives for the better.

I hated you when I first met you. I hated the fact that you made me stand up straight. I hated the way you made me wear my uniform right. I hated the way you made me speak correctly. Most of all, I hated the way that you wouldn’t accept my work unless it was the best I could do. And the best always seemed more effort than I was willing to put in.

We had lots of arguments, at the start. I remember being kept in at lunch a lot. And despite my yelling and threats – even tears once or twice – I remember you never lost your temper. You were always patient with me. You always took the time to listen to me, whenever I wanted to be heard.

I look back upon that time as so important in the development of the person that I am today. You taught me discipline. You taught me dignity. Much more than English, which was what you were supposedly teaching me, you taught me that I could achieve more than what I or other people thought that I was capable of. I could be a success, instead of a clown.

For that lesson, I owe you so much.

Thank you. A student (Year 11). ---

To my teacher:

If I had not had you as my teacher in Year 7, my life would be incredibly different. I’m not saying it would be bad – but you opened my eyes to what I could be, what I could do, in a way that I’ve never thought possible. You took a kid from Penrith and made him want to see the world and beyond.

I still remember one lesson where you told us about your hopes for your future when you were our age. I think you were meant to be talking about science, but it changed, and kind of became a life study. You told us about your regrets, and your successes, and for some reason, it all resonated with me, and I started to realize that anything really is possible.

You have changed my whole aspect on my learning, I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Your encouragement and persistence in my junior years has taught me that I am who I am, and to get to the top, it’s all down to me. I am capable, but it will take hard work and lots of dedication.

Thank you, Nick (Graduated). ---

Dear Friend:

An Inspirer. An Empower. An Engager. These three characteristics are just a short sample of the many you demonstrate with all of your students, including me, every single day.

Too often we progress through the ‘ropes of life,’ and do not invest the time to express our gratitude and authentic value for the support you so eagerly share for our growth, as not only students, but also as global citizens of society.

You make me feel authentically supported when you say, “Please let me know how I can be helpful” and genuinely mean it. Also, the excitement you express to co-learn with me rather than teach me, makes me feel like a partner in my learning experience, when it is so easy to feel like ‘a sponge that can only absorb.’ I know you have so much to share, but I love how you also openly articulate how much I have to share as well and how much you learn by engaging with me!

As an educator, your title can ensure a role of heightening my knowledge in academics. However, you see me not as one of the many students you have, but instead you value me for my uniqueness and strengths. You promote an environment where I feel like I am able to not only share my contribution, but also know it is actually considered and appreciated.

Thank you for being genuine. Thank you for seeing me as a partner in learning and sharing. Thank you for being you. Thank you for being one of the few great teachers out there. May you inspire others to achieve the greatness you have.

With gratitude, Clement Coulston (Graduated) ---

Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your time. Thank you for helping me with my homework. Thank you for setting me homework. Thank you for staying behind to help me, even when I know there are lots of other places you’d rather be. Thank you for keeping me company on camp when no one else was there. Thank you for not embarrassing me in front of my friends. Thank you for explaining things until I understand. Thank you for making me do my best. Thank you for being my teacher.

Sarah (Year 8)

Why write a gratitude note to your teacher, how to write a thank you note to a teacher, sample thank you notes for teachers, teacher appreciation quotes.

Teachers, despite working about 53 hours per week on average, get very little credit for all their hard work. They’re the ones who spent extra time in and out of the classroom to try and make a difference in each student’s life. They lesson plan, craft decorations and projects, and even use their own money to buy supplies for their classroom that otherwise wasn’t allocated to them. It’s thanks to teachers that we learn, develop, and find specific interests and passions.

For all these reasons (and more) it’s important to take the time to let teachers know just how much they’re appreciated. Saying “thank you” may seem minor, but sometimes it can make a big difference. Whether you have a child in elementary school or middle school, or you’re in high school wanting to share your appreciation for a great teacher or role model at school, a thank you note is the best way to share how much you appreciate the special teacher in your life. By writing a heartfelt thank you card to your wonderful teacher you can let them know all their hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed. So if you’re ready to start, follow our guidelines for writing thank you notes for teachers below:

When you’re ready to start writing your thank you, make sure to find appropriate personal stationary . Simple cards that say “Thank you” or school themed stationary are perfect for your handwritten note. Or, you can type out a thank you card customized with a favorite photo of you and your fantastic teacher. Once you have your card, start with the steps listed below:

  • Address the teacher by their proper name. Make sure you’re certain whether the teacher prefers to go by “Mr.” “Mrs.” “Miss” or “Ms.” Use this title on both the envelope and inside the card.
  • Start off with a greeting. Some appropriate greeting might include “Dear,” “To,” or just the teacher’s name followed by a comma.
  • Describe what they did that you are thankful for, and how it helped you. Maybe it was simply spending extra time after class to help your child work through a math problem. Or maybe it was something much bigger, like helping you through a difficult time of your life or providing extra support throughout the school year. Whatever it was, tell them why it mattered to you.
  • Don’t forget to say the words “Thank you!” These two simple words can easily be forgotten in the midst of writing a long letter, but it’s important to have them on the page.

All the best,

  • Warm Wishes,
  • Thank you again,

Anyone who says “Teachers have it easy because they get summers off” has never stood in front of more than a dozen students and tried to help them learn. Aside from the fact that the idea of teachers usually getting summers off is essentially a myth, everyone should understand that teaching is one of the most difficult and important professions in the world.

Jump ahead to these sections:

Why write a thank you letter to a teacher, how to write a thank you letter to a teacher: 4 steps, thank you letter to teacher examples.

Odds are good you’ve had a teacher who helped you become a better, or at least smarter, person. Maybe you want to express your feelings by writing a thank you letter to that teacher.

This guide will help. It offers tips and examples to ensure your thank you letter to a teacher makes the right impression.

Knowing why you’re writing a thank you letter to a teacher is just as important as writing the actual letter itself. Teachers impact each individual student in various ways. If you clearly define why you feel the urge to write this letter, you’re far more likely to write a strong one.

Potential reasons include:

  • Teachers inspire us to pursue our dreams . They can spark our passions. In some instances, they can even help us cope with personal issues. That said, it’s important to remember that some teachers also help us in very practical ways. For instance, maybe a college professor helped you network in your industry, giving you an early career boost. They deserve credit for that.
  • Teachers eventually retire . You don’t need to wait until a former teacher retires before sending them a thank you letter. Any time is a good time to let an educator know you appreciate them. That’s why thank you letters to teachers make smart teacher retirement gifts . They let teachers know their hard work over the years changed lives.
  • They helped you when you were headed down the wrong path . That’s a good reason to write a thank you letter to a teacher. Most educators want their students to like them. Those who decide that helping their students grow and learn is more important than being liked are no exception.

Your reason for writing a thank you letter to a teacher will influence your process to some degree. That said, these general steps usually apply:

List specific experiences

Teachers always enjoy receiving thank you notes from former students. It’s unlikely the teacher you’re contacting won’t appreciate receiving a thank you letter.

That said, they’ll appreciate it even more if it’s specific. Writing a thank you letter for a teacher that tells them they were an “inspiration” or a “great motivator” is a kind gesture. It’s even kinder, though, to include specific memories or details that illustrate precisely how that teacher inspired or motivated you. This shows you took the time to reflect on your experiences in their class before writing the letter. It also shows their influence was so significant that you still remember those specific experiences.

Make a list of these details before writing your letter. When it comes time to actually draft it, decide which makes the most sense to include. Reach out to former classmates if you think they’ll remember such details too.

Assess your skills

We’re not all strong writers. Some people can effectively communicate how they feel through written language. Some can’t. No one is a “bad person” if writing just isn’t one of their talents.

Of course, when writing a thank you letter to a teacher, your goal is to communicate your feelings in words. Be honest with yourself if that’s a task you struggle with.

It’s entirely fine to write a thank you letter for a teacher that says something along the lines of, “You know I was never great with words, but I think these thank you quotes from some of the poets we learned about in your class will let you know why you were one of the best teachers I ever had.”

Write a draft

Sending the first draft is one of the most common mistakes people make when sending any type of thank you letter. Yes, your first draft may be perfect. Regardless, you shouldn’t merely assume. You still need to reread it, and perhaps ask friends and family members to read it as well, before sending it.

A first draft often gives you the chance to get your thoughts and feelings out. You don’t need to know everything you want to say when writing a thank you letter for a teacher, even if you’ve done some planning first. You might still need to pen a first draft that involves writing out everything that comes to mind. Once you’ve done that, you can revisit it, seeing if there are ways to make it more organized or clear.

Choose your medium

The content of your thank you letter to a teacher isn’t the only important aspect of the message. You should also consider how your medium might strike them.

For instance, some teachers are perfectly happy receiving email thank you notes. However, other teachers are happier receiving “snail mail” letters on gorgeous stationery. Think about what your teacher would like before sending the letter.

You don’t need to have been a teacher’s student to write a thank you letter for a teacher. Educators also appreciate receiving thank-you notes from parents and colleagues. These examples of thank you letters to a teacher will cover those types of messages. They’ll help you write a strong letter no matter what your relationship with a teacher may be.

Teacher thank you letter from a student

Mr. Norman,

Hi, it’s Tom, from your 2004 history class. It’s no secret we didn’t always get along when I was in your class. By now it’s also no secret you only ever had my best interests at heart. Because of your hard work, I’ve learned that the struggles of the past are present in the future.

None of that would have happened without you. I’m sorry for not understanding you were only trying to help me when I was your student, but I’m not sorry for any of the experiences you gave me.

Teacher thank you letter from a parent

Dear Mrs. Johnson:

My child has had some good teachers over the years, as well as some bad ones. You were one of the few truly amazing ones.

The changes we saw in Doug throughout the time he was your student are indescribable, and they continue to benefit from your hard work to this day. Thanks for making my job so much easier!

Teacher thank you letter from a colleague

We both know how challenging this career can be. However, being a teacher is easier if you have support from your colleagues. I was lucky enough to get that support from you. Thank you for helping me overcome the difficulties we all face. Enjoy retirement. You’ve earned it!

Thank you letter to a professor

Dear Professor Doherty,

I want to thank you for teaching what was easily my favorite course in college. Your passion for the subject made me far more confident in my choice of career. The fact that you were so responsive when I needed assistance and worked with me during your office hours when you could have been using that time to grade papers or plan lessons is something I will always deeply appreciate.

Naturally, I also deeply appreciate the way you helped me with networking when I was preparing for graduation. I recently landed a job at a very prestigious firm, and while I’m proud of myself and my accomplishments (thanks, again, to the confidence you instilled in me), I strongly believe your influence played a big role in helping me secure this position. Thank you so much for caring about your students and helping us thrive even after we left your class.

That’s an important point, and it’s one of the reasons I wrote this letter. Before taking your class, I didn’t fully understand just how greatly a professor can impact the course of someone’s life. You made me realize that when a professor takes their job as seriously as you, they can truly help their students achieve their dreams.

Thank you letter to a teacher during COVID

Dear Mrs. Higgins,

Adapting to remote learning last year was tough on me and a lot of the other students. I think that made us forget that it also must have been very difficult for you. Switching to a completely new style of teaching while also coping with all the stresses of the pandemic must have been a challenge.

I just want you to know that while I’m sure that situation was stressful and frustrating for you, it never once seemed as though you took out your frustrations on your students. You were always patient with us as we adjusted to our new learning environment.

You also went the extra mile to ensure your lessons were as thorough and interesting as possible. I’m sure you know even better than I do that a remote learning lesson can be very different from an in-person lesson. I don’t know much about teaching, but I do know it was clear (at least to me) that you made some very intentional changes to the way you taught to make sure everyone was learning the material. Not every teacher would put in that much effort during a scary time, and I’m very thankful that you did.

Thank you letter to a teacher during Teacher Appreciation Week

Dear Mr. Johnson,

Hey! I know it’s been a few years since I was your student, but I randomly saw online that this week is Teacher Appreciation Week.

That got me thinking about the important teachers in my life. I can’t honestly say that I believe every teacher I ever had positively influenced my life, but I can say that the influence of the good teachers far outweighed the influence of the weaker ones in the long run. At least, that’s been my experience.

You were the best teacher I ever had. I don’t think I’m telling you anything you don’t know that the opinion of the student body regarding your teaching methods was split. Some students thought you were too strict and held us to unreasonably high standards.

Others deeply appreciated the way you motivated us to achieve our true potential. Sometimes, being a good teacher must be like being a good coach. The strongest coaches demand the best from the players on their teams because they know their players are capable of great achievements. You held us to such high standards because you had enough respect for us to know we were able to rise to great heights if we applied ourselves. That has impacted my life in far more ways than I can count.

Thank you letter to a teacher for the end of the school year

Dear Mrs. Brandt,

Happy End of the School Year! After dealing with students who weren’t always the most well-behaved group, I bet you’re looking forward to some well-deserved time off.

I’m usually happy when the school year ends. I definitely don’t hate school, but I obviously don’t mind not having to wake up early every morning to head to school when I’d rather sleep in or just enjoy my free time.

I’m still excited about the end of the school year (and yes, I do plan on spending part of the summer working on my novel, like you encouraged me to). Still, I get a little bit sad when I think about the fact that I won’t be your student next year. You worked hard to make your class as fun and interesting as possible while also making sure that we actually learned something from it. Not all teachers are good at making a class both enjoyable and genuinely valuable.

Again, you’ve definitely earned a break after this year. I hope you set aside as much time for yourself as you can. Thanks for a wonderful class and for caring so much about your students’ success!

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, 8 essays from educators who raised their voices this year

Teachers are often on the front lines of national conversations, kickstarting discussions that their students or communities need to have.

They also add their own voices to debates that would be less meaningful without them.

This year, as we mark Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re sharing some of the educator perspectives that we’ve published in our First Person section over the last year. Many thanks to the teachers who raised their voices in these essays. Want to help us elevate the voices of even more educators? Make a donation in support of our nonprofit journalism and you’ll have the option to honor an important educator in your life.

A Queens teacher on Charlottesville: ‘It can’t just be teachers of color’ offering lessons on race

After racial violence erupted in Virginia last year, New York City teacher Vivett Dukes called on teachers to engage students in honest conversations about racism.

“We do our children and ourselves a disservice when we don’t have these difficult conversations as a part of our collective curriculums. However, many teachers from various walks of life are neither well-versed nor fully comfortable discussing race on any level with their students. Not talking about racism won’t make it go away.”

Why the phrase ‘with fidelity’ is an affront to good teaching

Too often teachers are blamed for bad curriculum, writes Tom Rademacher, Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year in 2014. And that needs to stop.

“It keeps happening because admitting that schools are messy and students are human, and teaching is both creative and artistic, would also mean you have to trust teachers and let them have some power.”

I’m a Bronx teacher, and I see up close what we all lose when undocumented students live with uncertainty

Two of Ilona Nanay’s best students started high school as English learners and were diagnosed with learning disabilities. But their educational careers came to an end after graduation because both were undocumented and couldn’t afford out-of-state tuition.

“By not passing the DREAM Act, it feels like lawmakers have decided that some of the young people that graduate from my school do not deserve the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

I’m a Florida teacher in the era of school shootings. This is the terrifying reality of my classroom during a lockdown drill.

K.T. Katzmann is a teacher in Broward County, Florida. In this essay she shares what it’s like knowing that you could be the only thing between a mass shooter and a group of students.

“The experience of being isolated, uninformed, and responsible for the lives of dozens of children is now universal to our profession, whether because of actual emergencies or planned drills.”

I’m a Houston geography teacher. This is my plan for our first day back — as soon as it arrives.

Alex McNaughton teaches a human geography course in Houston. After Hurricane Harvey, he decided to move up a lesson about how urbanization can exacerbate flooding.

“Teachers have a unique power — the power to shape the minds of future generations to solve the problems that we face. Houston’s location means that it will always be susceptible to flooding. But by teaching about the flood I hope I can play a small role in helping our city avoid repeating some of the tragic scenes I witnessed this week.”

How one Harlem teacher gave his student — the ‘Chris Rock of third grade’ — a chance to shine

Ruben Brosbe, a New York City teacher, has a soft spot for troublemakers. In this story, he shares how he got one of his favorite pranksters, Chris, to go through a day without interrupting class.

“Dealing with him taught me a valuable lesson, a lesson I’ve had to learn again and again: At the end of the day, everything that we want to accomplish as teachers is built on our relationships. It’s built on me saying to you, ‘I see you,’ ‘I care about you,’ ‘I care about what you care about and I’m going to make that a part of our class.’”

Cut from the same cloth: Why it matters that black male teachers like me aren’t alone in our schools

Being a black educator can be isolating, writes William Anderson, a Denver teacher. He argues that a more supportive environment for black educators could help cities like Denver improve the lives of black students.

“Without colleagues of the same gender and cultural and ethnic background, having supportive and fulfilling professional relationships is much harder.”

I went viral for walking my students home from school in Memphis. Here’s what got lost in the shuffle.

For years, Memphis teacher Carl Schneider walked his students home to a nearby apartment complex. Then a photograph of him performing this daily ritual caught the attention of the national media. In this essay, Schneider reminds readers that he shouldn’t be the focus — the challenges his students face should. His call to action:

“Educate yourself about the ways systemic racism creates vastly different Americas.”

Thank you notes for teachers can be super simple. A hand-written letter or a short note on a store-bought card is enough to make any teacher's day. We even have some Printable Teacher Appreciation Cards that you can print at home.

Or you might like to hand-make a card. You can use simple cardboard and paper to create a very simple card with a personal touch. Essay on Thank You Teacher

Essay on Thank You Teacher

With a single gesture, a thank you can make someone’s day. It might be the little things in life that make us happiest. A quick thanks or a compliment can go a long way in making someone feel good about themselves. This essay will explore the importance of saying “thank you teacher”.

Thank you is a simple phrase that takes many forms. When someone does something nice for you, it’s polite to say thank you. But the ways in which people thank each other are also unique to their region or area of origin.

Whenever we receive a gift, we say “thank you.” When someone takes the time to do something for us, we instinctively say thank you. There is gratitude in every gesture and word that we use to express our gratitude.

We also give thanks when faced with adversity or when things don’t go our way. Saying thank you is one of the simplest and most powerful gestures we can make.

The Importance of Saying “Thank You” to Your Teacher

When you think of the word “thank you,” what comes to mind? Maybe a class visit from an elementary student, or a drop-by from your favorite aunt.

It could even be your favorite meal at your favorite restaurant. Regardless, thank you can come in all shapes and sizes. Regardless of the form, saying thank you is a great way to show gratitude and appreciation for what someone has done for you.

The feeling of gratitude goes both ways: the person who was thanked feels good because he or she knows he or she made a positive impact on another person’s life, and the persons being thanked feel good because they know they have been acknowledged as doing something good.

Best Ways to Show Gratitude

It takes more than a thank you note to convey your gratitude. Here are some ideas for ways to show your appreciation, on a more regular basis.

  • Say goodbye
  • Organize a surprise luncheon for your teachers
  • Bring treats to your teachers
  • Send a gift to the teachers
  • Leave a card in their mailbox
  • Donate something to a school
  • Bring them breakfast at school
  • Send them a care package
  • Have a fun playdate for the kids at school
  • Bring in treats for the classroom
  • Give them a personalized gift
  • Offer to sit with them at lunch
  • Participate in school projects together
  • Invite them to your child’s birthday parties

Be polite and courteous

Let’s be honest, it can be very difficult to show any sort of kindness and gratitude to others. It’s easier for people to be mean and rude to others because it’s easier to pick on a person you don’t know and see them as less than a human being.

But the second you stop thinking about your own superiority and start to think about how the other person is feeling, you can be a better person and start the cycle of giving and receiving kind words and smiles.

Be respectful and courteous. It’s so easy to be rude or disrespectful to people you don’t know, but it’s even easier to respect and help a person who is being kind to you.

Try to say something nice when you give your thanks

Many people fail to show proper appreciation because they are worried about what the other person will think of them.

However, they shouldn’t worry about this because saying thank you is the easiest way to make a person happy. Thanking others for doing something for you is always a good thing and it will keep you happy in the process.

Although it is true that there are many complex reasons behind why people are often reluctant to say thank you, you should always be courteous and polite when expressing your gratitude. They are most likely to reply positively to you. This will also mean that you give them a reason to say thank you in the future.

Show attention to detail

If you know someone who is hard to shop for, perhaps you can go out of your way to tell him or her exactly what you like and how they can use it. For example, if someone is really into fishing, they could tell you about the gear they are using or what they use it for, if they know.

Not only will they be happy knowing that you do know what they are passionate about, but they will also feel good knowing that you cared enough to find out for them.

Listen closely while they tell you

It is important to listen while someone is speaking so you can know what he or she would like in terms of gifts, especially if it is a teacher.

Listening carefully to the teacher is a little gesture that you can do in a simple way to show that you care for him/her. Maybe you can take the time to do something nice.

Smile while giving thanks

A smile is a common greeting in most parts of the world. When you see a friend, a waiter, a cashier or anyone else, they smile to greet you.

In most greeting cards, there is a person smiling. In most greetings, the used words include “smile” and “happy”, so, you should give a smile to your teachers also.

Wrapping up

Showing your appreciation can also go a long way, but it takes a little practice. One simple thing to remember is to show the person that you value the things that they do for you.

Take a few moments to think before offering your thanks. Giving compliments can make anyone feel good about themselves. This gesture not only shows that you are giving credit to the person, but also that you are showing appreciation and that you care.

Thank You Teacher (Essay Sample)

Thank you teacher.

My life has been an experience of going through valleys and mountains. I have seen good times, along with bad ones too. I have died thousands of times from discouragement yet I am still alive. No amount of pages can fill what I need to write to narrate my experiences. In my journey of life, various groups have contributed directly and otherwise, to the course of my life. One of the most important, influential individuals in my life to this point is my teacher.

When I began school, I knew little, if anything. Kindergarten and elementary school to me proved to be the eye opener. As I proceeded to higher levels of education, beside me all along was my teacher and my parent, of course. There are times when my parent was away from my side, particularly when I was in school. At such times, I relied on no other individual but my teacher whose steadfast presence enabled me to face life at school confidently. The teacher took charge when instances of bullying arose. He became an authority in my life. In this regard, the teacher played the role of a protector and to some extent a parent as he saw me through a lot of difficult times. A young boy lacks the ability to defend himself from much older, violent youths. It is at such times that I recognized the role of a teacher in my school life. I can only say thank you teacher!

One of the key roles that my teacher played in my life was the enhancement of my social life. Apart from teaching me on academic matters, my teacher encouraged me to speak out in class and outside of class thus he enhanced my social skills. Presently, I interact well with family members, my colleagues as well as other members of the society largely due to my teachers’ and parents’ determination to see me prosper in all aspects of life. One of the common problems pointed out by employers in the current world is the un-employability of some fresh graduates due to professional inadequacies, one of which is as a result of poor social skills. For me, that is not a problem because my teacher worked hand in hand with my parents to see that I got the best in as far as professional growth was concerned.

Teachers make an indescribable role in terms of the sacrifice that they make. I spend as much time with my teachers as my parents and family members. The teacher spent much time at school, caring for my academic, psychological, spiritual as well as social wellbeing. In the process, he made much sacrifice. He spent the time he could be with his family with me in school. I cannot determine the exact amount of remuneration he received in exchange for his sacrifice but I do understand that few individuals can make the extent of sacrifice my teacher made. Furthermore, the teacher provided invaluable advice on what was best and worst in as far as the betterment of my life was concerned. Such advice entailed rewards and punishment both of which were delivered effectively, thus collectively made me a better person. Thank you teacher!

In conclusion, my teacher is a special person in my life. The time plus commitment that teachers made, in collaboration with my parents have molded me into a better individual. I have grown from an academic, social, spiritual and psychological viewpoint, and this has not just brought out a competent but also socially viable, useful member of the society. A teacher is a parent to me too, and just as I would say to my parent, I say to every teacher who has impacted my life: THANK YOU TEACHER!

Massanutten Regional Library holds 27th annual ‘Honored Teacher Essay’ contest

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - In its 27th year, the Massanutten Regional Library’s Honored Teacher Essay Contest is open to all students, grades K-12, who attend public, private, or home schools in the city of Harrisonburg, or in Rockingham or Page Counties.

MRL staff said students are invited to enter essays recognizing current or past teachers who have made a difference in their lives.

“Our kindergarten and second-grade essays are fun and often highlight the fun things that teachers do. But, as you watch the essays progress through the years we move into more meaningful essays where students might be struggling with something at home, or struggling in the classroom and that teacher has really reached out to them mentored them, coached them, given them the support that they’re not getting other places,” MRL director of advancement, Mary Golden Hughes said.

Hughes said the Kiwanis Club of Harrisonburg will serve as judges for the contest and will choose the top two essays in each of the following grade ranges: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Essay winners in each grade range will receive $150, while runners-up will receive $100 each. In addition, one of the teachers honored from the winning essays from all categories will be selected “Honored Teacher of the Year” and will receive $1,000 to enhance his/her teaching.

Essays can be delivered in-person to any of MRL’s seven branch locations , emailed to [email protected] . They can also be mailed to Hughes at Massanutten Regional Library, Honored Teachers Contest, 174 S. Main St., Harrisonburg VA 22801. Submissions must be accompanied by an official entry form, which can be downloaded at this link in English or here in Spanish . The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 15.

A reception recognizing the winning essays and the teachers honored will be held on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Central Library in downtown Harrisonburg. Winning students and their caregivers will be invited to attend, as well as the teachers honored in their essays. Hughes said the “Honored Teacher of the Year” will be kept secret until the reception.

In a press release, MRL said the contest was made possible through the generosity of Robert H. “Twig” Strickler and his wife Lorraine, who set up a memorial endowment to honor Twig’s parents, Robert B. and Gladys Hopkins Strickler, who were both teachers. To date, the contest has awarded a total of more than $10,000 to teachers to enhance their work, as well as thousands of dollars in prizes to student writers.

Broward teachers expecting pay raise thanks to school district's vote on new contracts

By Anna McAllister

Updated on: February 27, 2024 / 5:04 PM EST / CBS Miami

FORT LAUDERDALE — Thanks to the Broward County School Board's 6-3 vote in favor of new contracts with the Broward Teacher's Union, educators can expect a bump in their paychecks.

"This raise increases the base salary for our teachers, who are the backbone of our organization," said Lori Alhadeff, chair of the Broward School Board.

More than $175 million is being invested into teacher's compensation with hopes of retaining educators in the district.

School district officials say about $19.6 million of federal funding will expire in the fall.

"It's very scary considering lowering enrollment, facilities that are in need or repair and making sure that we compensate our staff so teaching actually gets done," said Dr. Peter Licata, Superintendent of Broward Schools.

The agreement states that teachers on a grandfathered salary schedule will receive a 3.65% increase. Teachers on a performance-based schedule will see a 3.42% to 4.56% increase in their salary, and new teachers' starting salary increases to $50,226.

"The cost of living has gravely impacted our educators. Our teachers are here wholeheartedly, they give more than 100 percent commitment. They work after hours, they work long hours, they work weekends," said Anna Fusco, President of Broward Teachers Union.

Fusco also points out the challenges teachers face every day while trying to invest in the future of students.

"Schools with measles, schools with mold, schools with broken air conditioning, bomb threats that happen that put our teachers in three-hour conditions — that is commitment,"

The pay increase is coming from state and stimulus dollars.

The school board says they're also looking into other incentives to keep teachers in the district.

Primary schoolchildren hold up their hands in class

One in four school-starters in England and Wales not toilet-trained, say teachers

School staff report worsening school-readiness with teachers devoting more time to child-support work that parents once did

One in four children starting school in England and Wales are not toilet-trained, according to teachers who now spend a third of their day supporting pupils who are not school-ready, a report has found.

The early-years charity, Kindred 2 , polled 1,000 primary school staff, half of whom said problems with school-readiness have got worse in the last 18 months, with schools doing more of the work to prepare children that parents would once have done.

Nearly half (46%) of pupils are unable to sit still, 38% struggle to play or share with others, more than a third (37%) cannot dress themselves, 29% cannot eat or drink independently and more than a quarter (28%) are using books incorrectly, swiping or tapping as though they were using a tablet, according to the survey.

As a consequence, school staff are on average diverting 2.5 hours a day away from teaching and towards supporting children who are not school-ready, which has a knock-on effect on pupils who lose around a third of learning time each day.

Schools say the additional pressures are also affecting staff retention. Almost half (47%) of teachers who took part in the survey said they are considering leaving their role and nearly a quarter (23%) plan on doing so in the next year.

“I feel like we’re not teaching as much in the first year now as we used to,” one teacher told researchers. “It’s more babysitting … teaching them basic skills … It’s like being the parent for them.”

The report exposes a sharp divide in parental and teacher views. A parallel poll of 1,000 parents of reception-age children found the overwhelming majority (91%) think their child was school-ready.

Only 50% of parents think they are solely responsible for toilet-training their child, while one in five parents think children do not need to be toilet-trained before starting reception.

More than two-thirds (69%) of school staff think parents need more guidance earlier about child development milestones – two out of five (43%) didn’t hear about school-readiness until their child was already four. More than one in five (22%) of parents had received no visits from a health visitor before their child started school and the majority (63%) had two visits or fewer.

Kindred 2 ’s director, Felicity Gillespie, said: “The shocking findings in this year’s report should be a watershed moment for schools and parents because we know that children who are behind before they begin reception are more likely to struggle throughout life. The 40% attainment gap we see at GCSE is already evident at age five.”

Cathie Paine, chief executive officer of REAch2, the largest primary-only multiacademy trust in England, added: “We are determined to work with families to ensure that children make the best possible start at school.

after newsletter promotion

“However, as a large trust we are witnessing first-hand the many challenges that schools face with young children’s readiness – this includes not yet having been toilet-trained, lacking some basic skills or simply having had limited exposure to experiences such as looking at books or basic counting.

“Being clear about what we mean by ‘school-readiness’ and then knowing the best way to support families is an important challenge for the sector, but one that we cannot shy away from if we are to live up to our promise of improving children’s life chances.”

A Department for Education spokesperson told PA Media: “We recognise that children’s early years are crucial – which is why we are providing a package of training, qualifications and expert guidance for early-years workers, which includes support for them to improve children’s speech, language and communication skills.

“Parents can also access support to help with their child’s development via the government’s family hubs and Start for Life programme. This is part of our £300m investment to transform services for parents, carers, babies and children in 75 local authority areas across England.”

Let’s Thank the Alabama Supreme Court

An illustration of Lady Justice holding a cross and sword.

By Linda Greenhouse

Ms. Greenhouse, the recipient of a 1998 Pulitzer Prize, reported on the Supreme Court for The Times from 1978 to 2008 and was a contributing Opinion writer from 2009 to 2021.

I never thought I’d be grateful to the Alabama Supreme Court for anything, but now I am. With its decision deeming frozen embryos to be children under state law, that all-Republican court has done the impossible. It has awakened the American public, finally, to the peril of the theocratic future toward which the country has been hurtling.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that erased the constitutional right to abortion was an alert, too, of course, leaving Republicans scrambling to distance themselves from the fruits of the court they had populated with such glee only a few years earlier. The fact that religious doctrine lay at the heart of Justice Samuel Alito’s majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was perfectly clear, as I observed then. Dobbs is usually discussed today as a conservative power play, however, rather than as a projection of a religious view of fetal life onto both a largely unwilling public and the Constitution itself.

But there’s no avoiding the theological basis of the Alabama court’s solicitude for “extrauterine children,” to use the majority opinion’s phrase. In a concurring opinion in which he referred to embryos as “little people,” Tom Parker, Alabama’s chief justice, rested his analysis on what’s become known as the Sanctity of Unborn Life Amendment that Alabama voters added to the state’s Constitution in 2018. “It is as if the people of Alabama took what was spoken of the prophet Jeremiah and applied it to every unborn person in this state: ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I sanctified you,’” the chief justice wrote.

The decision was a shock, causing immediate chaos and heartbreak as fertility centers in Alabama paused their in vitro fertilization practices, crushing dreams of long-deferred parenthood even for couples whose embryos were days away from being transferred. (The cowardice of the medical profession is a notable feature of the post-Dobbs era; listen to Monday’s episode of “The Daily ” for one young woman’s despairing account of what she experienced.)

But should it really have been such a surprise? The country is awash in religiosity when it comes to human reproduction. More than 120 Republican members of the House of Representatives have signed on as co-sponsors of the Life at Conception Act . Among them is their leader, Speaker Mike Johnson, an evangelical Christian who has called abortion “an American holocaust.” The bill provides that “the terms ‘human person’ and ‘human being’ include each and every member of the species homo sapiens at all stages of life, including the moment of fertilization, cloning or other moment at which an individual member of the human species comes into being.”

While the bill doesn’t mention in vitro fertilization, the implications for I.V.F. are clear on the face of its text. Now many of its co-sponsors are urgently assuring their constituents that they don’t really mean that .

A startling example of religion infiltrating the engines of government is playing out in Idaho. The state’s attorney general, Raúl Labrador, has brought on the group Alliance Defending Freedom, a prominent Christian legal organization, to help argue Idaho’s Supreme Court challenge to a Biden administration policy that requires hospitals to provide abortion if necessary when a woman arrives in the emergency room in a pregnancy-induced medical crisis. The federal law, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, requires hospitals to provide either “necessary stabilizing treatment” for any emergency room patient or a transfer to another hospital, while Idaho’s abortion law permits terminating a pregnancy only in cases of rape and incest and to prevent “death.”

In making its argument, Idaho says in its brief to the court that it has a record of “150 years of protecting life” and that the federal medical treatment law “does not require emergency rooms to become abortion enclaves in violation of state law.” The case is set for argument in April.

As the full force of the Alabama court’s decision sank in, the state’s Republican governor, Kay Ivey, and leaders of the Republican-controlled State Legislature have vowed to enact a legislative fix to protect I.V.F. That may not be so simple. The 1872 state law on which Justice Jay Mitchell based his majority opinion, the Wrongful Death of a Minor Act, presumably could be replaced by new legislation. But Chief Justice Parker warned in his concurring opinion that the recent voter-approved constitutional protection for “unborn life” would stand in the way.

“Carving out an exception for the people in this case, small as they were,” he wrote, in reference to the destroyed frozen embryos at the heart of the case, “would be unacceptable to the people of this state, who have required us to treat every human being in accordance with the fear of a holy God who made them in his image.”

As Alabama’s political leaders search for a way out of this mess, I can’t help but notice their silence on the closely related subject of abortion. As soon as the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Alabama’s pre-Dobbs abortion law sprang into effect. It is a total ban, making an exception only to prevent “a serious health risk” to the pregnant woman, not for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. As of 2021, Alabama had the fourth-highest maternal death rate in the country, behind only Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. (To put this in perspective, a woman giving birth in Alabama is more than four times as likely to die in the process or soon thereafter as one in California.) Restoring access to abortion might seem to be a logical, even natural topic of conversation.

So why do we hear nothing from those so quick to self-protectively bemoan the state court’s I.V.F. decision? Religion is part of the answer, no doubt, but there is something more. Abortion is generally portrayed as a woman’s issue; an unwanted or even dangerous pregnancy is her problem. Infertility, by contrast, is seen as a couple’s problem. That means there is a man involved (even if, for lesbian couples, for example, or for single women, that man is only a sperm donor). And when men have a problem, we know the world is going to snap to attention.

Rhetoric about the “sanctity of unborn life,” in the words of Alabama’s Constitution, has for too long been cost-free, a politician’s cheap thrill. Now we see that, taken to extremes in the hands of the ideologues our current political culture nurtures, it has a price, one that society now seems reluctant to pay. For that realization, we can, as I said earlier, thank the Alabama Supreme Court.
