We all feel blissful and happy as the atmosphere becomes energised and charged.

We've all heard various versions of Diwali stories from our ancestors, and each household has its version. Some of the families believe it commemorates the victory of good over evil, while others believe it honours Lakshmi, the Goddess of Riches, and Ganesha, the God of Knowledge. However, the most popular of them is that Diwali commemorates Lord Rama's, Sita's, and Lakshman's return to their ancestral home of "Ayodhya" after a 14-year exile, according to the Hindu epic Ramayana.

Some people commemorate the return of the Pandavas to their kingdom after 12 years of exile and one year of agyatvas, according to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is also believed that Diwali began to be celebrated when Goddess Lakshmi was born after the gods and demons churned the ocean.

Diwali also marks the beginning of a new Hindu year in the west and some northern parts of India. The Sikh faith commemorates this day by lighting the Golden Temple in honour of their various Gurus. It is observed by followers of the Jain faith to commemorate Lord Mahavira's attainment of Nirvana and enlightenment. On the other hand, kids celebrate the festival by lighting firecrackers in the evening.

This day encourages us to stay away from bad habits, do good deeds, and stay on the right track to living happier lives. Special ceremonies and customs are observed on this day. The reason for these differences is possibly local harvest festivals. Therefore, there was a blend of these harvest festivals into one pan-Hindu festival.

The main reason to celebrate Diwali is also to return to Lord Ayodhya of Lord Ram. After he defeated Ravana, the Asur king of Lanka. So every year on this day we celebrate it as a symbol of goodness. This is the significance of the celebration of the Diwali festival. Diwali has been celebrated in India since ancient times around 4 to 5 thousand years.

Diwali is the longest festival as it lasts for 5 days. It generally occurs in October or November month and the Hindu Month of Kartik. Five days of Diwali include

1)Dhantrayodishi

2)Narakchaturdashi

3)Laxmipujan

4)Diwali Padwa

Each day of Diwali has its own importance and significance. On the day of Dhantrayodishi, Dhan that is wealth is worshipped. On Narakchaturdashi, it is time to take Holy Bath before sunrise. On Laxmipujan, Laxmi the goddess of wealth is worshipped. On padwa, the wife performs Aukshan(A kind of worship) of her husband and the fifth day of Diwali is Bhaubij which marks the selfless love between brothers and sisters.

In this way, the five days of Diwali are celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm. People start the preparation for this festival a month ago. They clean and paint their houses. Buy gifts and new clothes and gadgets. Children prepare clay forts and sky lanterns for hanging above homes.

Different kinds of sweets like Laddoos, Chuwada, shankarpali, and karanjis are prepared and along with eaten by families, and gifted to friends and relatives. People decorate houses with lights, lamps, flowers, and many other decorative items.

Students have Diwali holidays after finishing their half academic year and they enjoy this festival very much by eating sweets, bursting firecrackers, and wearing new clothes. They get an opportunity to visit their friends and relatives and play a lot of games.

Diwali has religious importance. It is an age-old tradition to light lamps and worship Goddess Laxmi. Merchants worship their account books and people buy new things on the auspicious occasion of Diwali like cars, houses, mobiles, and laptops.

Diwali is also important from the point of view of health. Diwali comes in the winter season and our body needs more calories to fight the cold season. Diwali sweets make us ready for it. Farmers have just finished their harvest season and they happily celebrate Diwali to mark the joy of good yield.

When Lord Rama returned to his city Ayodhya after completing his forest life, All the people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting the rows of Diyas.

From then this day combined with this custom became a festival. Every festival is an event for spreading and expressing happiness. And the expression of happiness is called celebration. Initially, this celebration was fully eco-friendly.

As we know everything changes with time and so does the way of celebration. People started celebrating this day by bursting the fireworks. As we know that the whole of India celebrates this festival, and it causes a high surge in air pollution.

Air pollution is not environment-friendly & harms the common man’s health. So, this is the need of the hour to understand the situation and celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. I am not against fireworks but fireworks that contribute to air pollution. You can still burst eco-friendly fireworks available in the market.

One can’t deny the fact that Diwali is the most famous festival in India. The Festival of Lights leads illumination to the lives of people. Kids wait for this day impatiently. This festival is a symbol of Indian culture.

In India, Diwali or Deepawali is a festival that is considered the biggest celebration of the year. We celebrate Dhanteras and Chhoti Diwali Day before the chief festival and Bhaiduj right the next day of Diwali. Diwali is mainly celebrated because on this day Lord Rama returned to their place Ayodhya after defeating the demon Ravana.

Days before Diwali, we start cleaning our houses and decorating them colourfully. We dispose of all the scrap material, and junk items from our home. Markets also get abundant crowds days beforehand this celebration. The entire scene of the city looks wonderful.

On the day of Dhanteras, people purchase golden and silver items as a symbol of wealth. Clothes, utensils, electric appliances etc. are sold massively. From the first ray of sun to the last minute of the day, shops are crowded with customers.

On the day of Diwali, people decorate their homes with illumining candles, Diyas (Clay lamps), and colourful lighting. Girls make designer Rangolis. We gather at night to worship the goddess of wealth, Laxmi and Lord Ganesh. We all relish various dishes and sweets. We wear dazzling clothes and we enjoy Diwali by bursting fireworks, sparklers, and crackers.

Even if the festival of Diwali is a symbol of Victory Over Evil. The very next day of Diwali, there is seen a high surge in air pollution because of bursting fireworks. This surge is not good for our health and our environment.

Also, it is a reason behind the problem of global warming which is again a critical issue to solve. So, we need to find ways to celebrate this festival eco-friendly. I am not against fireworks but fireworks that contribute to air pollution. You can still burst eco-friendly fireworks available in the market.

To sum it up. Diwali holds great significance in terms of brotherhood, friendships and relationships. But we must ensure that a celebration does not become a reason for the infliction of punishment.

Deepawali is considered as the most important festival in India and the massive celebrations organised during the festival are not the reason behind it. Diwali is attached with some religious and spiritual values. It is believed that Hindu deities Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi shower their blessings on people during these days, which marks the beginning of the financial year. As we all know, Maa Laxmi is known as the goddess of wealth and prosperity while on the other hand, Lord Ganesha is the lord of wisdom, he removes all the obstacles from one’s life. So, worshipping these Hindu deities on this festival brings prosperity, wealth, wisdom, and happiness to your life. Another theory behind the celebration of Diwali happens to be the return of Lord Rama to his kingdom Ayodhaya, on this day. The epic tale of Ramayana says that Lord Rama returned with wife Sita and younger brother Lakshman after killing the demon Ravana. His return to Ayodhya lightened up the entire kingdom with lights, diyas, joy, and excitement. The people of Ayodhya were very grateful for the return of their king, Lord Rama, and massive celebrations were organised to welcome Lord Rama. The process continued ever since and hence Diwali is being recognised as the festival of lights to celebrate the win of good over evil, the win of Lord Rama over Ravana.

But, it is important to be extremely careful while celebrating such huge and massive festivals. In the excitement of festivals, we often forget the harmful impact our activities create on the environment and general lives of people. I would also like to highlight a few important points that every one of us should keep in mind before we begin the celebrations for Diwali 2023. The first point is regarding our own safety. There have been multiple incidents of house fires and human burnings in the past. It is extremely important to be safe and ensure that everyone around you is safe. Secondly, it is better to opt for alternative measures of firecrackers such as eco-friendly crackers or avoid bursting crackers at all because they deteriorate the air quality, thus enhancing air pollution and degrading the environment. People suffering from asthma, bronchitis, and such lung problems are severely affected by the carbon residues produced by firecrackers. Thirdly, and the most important point is to help the marginalised section of our society and ensure that they can light up their houses and prepare sweets on Diwali, with a few pennies that they earn by selling Diwali decorative items and other essentials such as Diyas, calendar, idols, and more.

Various Indian delicacies and sweets are prepared at homes for the families and neighbourhood. Children make rangolis, and take part in decoration activities, sweet making, and many other activities. Of course, the highlight of the festival remains to be the cleaning process Diwali brings with it. Every nook and corner of all the Indian households is cleaned properly and then made ready for the festival. It is believed that cleaning the house for Diwali brings wealth and prosperity into the house.

Diwali Speech 2022 in English and Hindi: The festival of Diwali (#HappyDiwali) is celebrated throughout the country with great enthusiasm. Children and parents alike get a few days off from school and the workplace during this time. Celebrating, enjoying delicious festive feasts, and celebrating family culture and traditions are something children look forward to. Good morning, everyone who is present here! 

Today I am here to deliver my thoughts on Diwali, hereby I would like to pay my gratitude to all my teachers and friends who have given me this opportunity.

Diwali is the  festival of lights  and joy which unites all family members and loved ones to participate in this happiness. It is India’s biggest and main  festival for Hindus . We worship Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali for wealth and wisdom. Diwali indicates the victory of knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil, and this festival also signifies the success of light over darkness. Today through my speech we will all know about Diwali’s religious and spiritual importance.

If we talk about the religious importance of Diwali then it has many differences. Although, different religions have different values and perspectives about Diwali, even after different belief the joy, enthusiasm, and vivaciousness Diwali bring to people’s lives is what binds everyone together. The four days celebration of Diwali illuminates the country with its brilliance and fills people with joy. Mostly, we celebrate Diwali in late October or early November. It varies yearly as it is celebrated on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik. Every day of the festival of Diwali is marked with its different values and tradition, but what remains constant is the celebration of its enjoyment and a sense of goodness with joy.

On the day of Diwali, we celebrate the return of Lord Ram along with Sita and Laxman to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile in the forest. Every year on this day of Diwali we celebrate it as a symbol of goodness as Ram defeated the Raavan, the king of Lanka. The people of Ayodhya express their love, affection, and attachment to their king Ram by lighting up their houses and the whole state with lights and diyas. In this way, they welcomed their upcoming king Ram. 

There is also another widespread significance to celebrating Diwali, on this auspicious day lord Vishnu takes the avatar of Krishna to kill Narakasura. He was a demon and above all this victory of the lord, Vishnu released 16000 captive girls. Furthermore, this victory is an indication of the triumph of good over evil. 

Although, Diwali is not limited to the plays of knowledge over ignorance or good over evil. On this day we used to worship the goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. People also worship Lord Ganesha, the god of auspicious beginnings with Goddess Laxmi in the evening. They decorate their home with rangoli and diya lights. On this occasion of Diwali, the prime attraction is firecrackers. Celebration of Diwali includes delicious sweets, home-cooked meals, and some gifts and sweets distributed to relatives, families, and neighbors. On the night of Diwali, people opened the doors of their homes in anticipation of the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi.

दिवाली के धार्मिक महत्व की बात करें तो इसके कई पहलु हैं। हालाँकि, अलग-अलग धर्मों में दिवाली के बारे में अलग-अलग मूल्य और दृष्टिकोण हैं, अलग-अलग विश्वासों के बाद भी, दिवाली लोगों के जीवन में जो खुशी, उत्साह और जीवंतता लाती है, वह सभी को एक साथ बांधती है। दिवाली का पाँच दिवसीय उत्सव देश को अपनी चमक से रोशन करता है और लोगों को खुशियों से भर देता है। ज्यादातर, हम अक्टूबर के अंत या नवंबर की शुरुआत में दिवाली मनाते हैं। यह हर साल बदलता रहता है क्योंकि यह हिंदू महीने कार्तिक के 15 वें दिन मनाया जाता है। दिवाली के त्योहार का हर दिन अपने अलग-अलग मूल्यों और परंपराओं के साथ चिह्नित होता है, लेकिन जो कुछ भी स्थिर रहता है वह है इसके आनंद का उत्सव और खुशी के साथ अच्छाई की भावना।

दिवाली के दिन, हम सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ भगवान राम के वन में 14 साल के वनवास के बाद अयोध्या लौटने का जश्न मनाते हैं। हर साल दीवाली के इस दिन हम इसे अच्छाई के प्रतीक के रूप में मनाते हैं क्योंकि राम ने लंका के राजा रावण को हराया था। अयोध्या के लोग अपने घरों और पूरे राज्य को रोशनी और दीयों से रोशन करके अपने राजा राम के प्रति अपने प्यार, स्नेह और लगाव का इजहार करते हैं। इस तरह उन्होंने अपने आने वाले राजा राम का स्वागत किया।

दिवाली मनाने का एक और लोकप्रिय महत्व भी है, इस शुभ दिन पर भगवान विष्णु नरकासुर को मारने के लिए कृष्ण का अवतार लेते हैं। वह एक राक्षस था और भगवान की इस जीत से ऊपर, विष्णु ने 16000 बंदी लड़कियों को रिहा किया। इसके अलावा, यह जीत बुराई पर अच्छाई की जीत का संकेत है।

Diwali is the festival of lights. On this day, you will only see lights everywhere. This day is very auspicious and is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India. The festival majorly falls in the month of October or November by English calendar and in the month o Kartik according to Hindu calendar.

This festival is celebrated as a mark of victory of Lord Rama over the devil Ravana and his return to Ayodhya after the exile of 14 years. Diwali festival is the symbol of victory of goods over the evils.

Celebration of Diwali

Diwali is my favorite festival because on this day whole India is covered up with lights and we enjoy a lot by burning firecrackers, eating sweets and wearing new clothes.

We light candles, lamps, and diyas in our homes. All the streets, shops, markets are decorated with lights. On this day, we all worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune. The preparation for the celebration of this festival starts a month ago. We all clean our houses so that goddess Lakshmi comes to our house and provide our family good fortune, wealth, and prosperity.

We all buy new clothes and wear on the day of this auspicious festival. We all buy firecrackers to burn in the night and enjoy with the family. We all eat a lot of sweets and delicious food at the night on the day of the festival. We all distribute sweets and Diwali gifts to each other. During the fireworks the scene of the sky is splendid. It looks so beautiful. We also make rangolis on the day of Diwali at the entrance of our houses and decorate our houses and shops in the best possible ways.

Diwali festival is basically a five days celebration. The five days of Diwali festival includes:

#1. Dhanteras: The first day of the celebration of Diwali festival is known as Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. On this day people buy utensils, gold and silver product as it is believed that purchasing these products on this special day may prosper our lives.

#2. Naraka Chaturdashi : The second day is also known as Choti Diwali. This day is celebrated by taking a bath with oil and applying kumkum on the forehead and worshiping Goddess Kaali and also worshiping Lord Krishna as he killed the demon Narkasur.

#3. Diwali: The third day is itself Diwali and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by worshiping Lord Ganesha and Lord Lakshmi for prospering life and also distributing sweets to friends and family.

#4. Govardhan Puja: On this day Lord Krishna is worshiped. The people make Govardhan with the cow dung at their doorsteps and worship.

#5. Bhai Dooj : this day is celebrated by the brothers and sister. On this day, sisters apply kumkum of Kesar on the forehead of their brothers and brothers give sisters gifts and promise them to take care of them.

On the day of the festival, we perform puja at home in the evening. We offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and seek blessings from our elders. During the Lakshmi puja, I pray to the goddess to bless every home with wealth and prosperity. Every year on Diwali, my parents distribute diyas, oil, and wicks among poor people. We also offer them sweets and other gifts. My mother says that like a diya lights up a space, we should also light up someone’s life. I love spreading joy and light among more and more people.

Diwali is one of the traditional festivals which has different stories about how it began one of the popular story behind the beginning of this festival is when Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman returned back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and getting victory over evil Ravana. The people welcomed them with lighting diyas all over Ayodhya, hence from that day Diwali is celebrated which gives the message of victory of good over bad.

Diwali is one of the major festival of India, and people are very excited about this festival. Diwali is celebrated with a lot of happiness. Diwali is one of the favorite festival on children because there is a vocational holiday for school during the festival of Diwali so children enjoy this festival a lot.

Before the beginning of Diwali people start cleaning and renovating their houses and beautifully decorate their houses. On eve of this Diwali festival children are offered brand new cloth and given firecrackers. This is also one reason because of which children love this festival so much.

Diwali is a festival of light, in this festival, every home is decorated with beautiful lights, Diyas are placed outside all houses and one lantern is hanged on the roof. During Diwali at night time all the darkness is overturned by lights, this is the reason because of which Diwali is also called as festival of lights. This light in darks gives us a message about the victory of good (light) over evil (dark).

On Diwali, my sister makes a beautiful rangoli with different pattern every day outside our door. In every house sweets and snacks are prepared, this includes "chakli, laddu, karanji, chivada, etc". These homemade snacks are then distributed to each other's home as greetings which increases relations with every family.

We enjoy this festival of Diwali a lot, we burst firecrackers every day. On the day of Laxmi puja we offer prayer to the goddess Laxmi for a wealthy life. On the day of Bhai Dooj, sister gives their brother a gift and greet each other.

Overall the festival of light Diwali is celebrated with a lot of excitement and happiness all over India. And I enjoy this festival a lot so Diwali is my favorite festival.

My favourite festival is Diwali, also called Deepawali. Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated Indian festivals.

Story Of Diwali | Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, his home, after 14 years of exile. As per Hindu mythology, Rama was sent to exile along with his wife, Sita, by his father, King Dashratha, on the wish of his wife Kaikeyi. During the period of their exile, Sita was kidnapped by Ravana and taken to Lanka. Rama, along with his brother Lakshman, defeated Ravana and brought Sita back home.

The festival of Diwali, thus, commemorates the victory of Rama over Ravana, or good over evil. It is celebrated in October or November on new moon day. So, the absence of the moon is filled by lighting diyas and candles.

How It Is Celebrated | People buy new clothes, decorate their houses, and distribute gifts and sweets among friends and relatives. Rangolis are made and diyas are lit. Families and friends play cards with each other, cook delicious food and eat together. Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, is worshipped on Diwali. It is a time of joy and glee, and also a chance for people living away from their families to reunite with them.

It is a time for people to get together with their families and friends, and make memories. On the day of Diwali, pooja is performed in the evening, followed by the lighting of fireworks. The 5-day festival starts with Naraka Chaturdashi and culminates with Bhai Dooj.

How I Celebrated Last Year

Last year, we celebrated Diwali at my native place. All my uncles, aunts and our family gathered at my grandparents’ house. We reached there a day before.

My grandfather distributed the tasks equally. Elders were assigned the cleaning of the house while we, kids, were asked to make rangolis and decorate the house.

Get Togethers | In the evening, we performed a pooja together and then went to the common space in the village where we met my grandparents’ neighbours. We all made merry as we exchanged sweets and had dinner together.

Visit To Orphange | I and my cousins slept with my grandparents in the living room. Our grandparents told us the stories of how they celebrated Diwali in olden times. The next day, we decided to go to an orphanage and donate clothes and food. We watched a newly- released movie together. On the third day, everybody was sad as it was time to return to routine.

We all had a great time. It was especially enlightening for my younger cousins since they experienced how it was to live in a joint family for the first time. The smile that emerged on their faces as they received gifts and cash from all the elders was worth a sight.

Things We Should Take Care Of

Needless to say, Diwali is a time of gaiety and celebration for a lot us. But keeping in mind certain things as we welcome the festival would ensure that the underprivileged and voiceless are also able to make joy during the festive time.

We should keep a check on the amount of crackers we burn since they pollute the environment. Also, it might be tough for people with any respiratory issues to cope. Crackers are also a threat to stray animals.

Instead of buying decorative items and household stuff imported from other countries, if we stick to buying domestically-manufactured items, small and medium businessmen will also be able to make the most of Diwali.

Helping the needy never harms. During the festival time, when the privileged lot is celebrating, they should also make an effort to share their happiness with those in need.

How I Celebrate Diwali

The preparation for the Diwali festival begins a few weeks before the celebration. We start painting our house and then cleaning it. Different types of decorative lights are used to decorate the house. We also go shopping. We buy different things like new clothes, sweets, gifts, crackers, rangoli colors, diyas (earthen lamps), candles, and many more decorative items. On Dhanteras, we go market to buy utensils and gold items. I always remain excited for the day before Diwali. On this day I make rangoli at the entrance of my house.

On the morning of Diwali, we go to the temple. In the evening, we wear new clothes and worship goddess Laxmi and lord Ganesha. After puja, we light up earthen lamps and candles to decorate the house. Then I along with my friends and siblings enjoy firecrackers and sparkles. Although these fireworks are not good for our environment, so we try to celebrate eco-friendly Diwali. We together enjoy sweets and snacks. After Diwali, we also celebrate Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.

Why do we Celebrate Diwali?

In India, most of the festival is associated with mythological stories. Diwali is celebrated to enjoy the arrival of Lord Rama (a form of Vishnu) after 14 years of exile (Vanvas). He came home after killing the demon Ravana. On Dussehra, he killed Ravana and it took 14 days to return to his home. That is why Diwali is celebrated after 14 days of Dussehra. It is said that in the happiness of the arrival of Lord Rama in Ayodhya people decorated the entire city with diyas and lights. Since then the celebration of Diwali began.  

This festival has a special significance for people in India. As we all know, the massive use of fireworks pollutes the air. It leads to a big rise in environmental pollution. However, it can turn dangerous for children. So, we should try to celebrate Diwali in a way that is good for both the environment and the surroundings.

It is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile. Before it falls, people clean and whitewash their houses. The toy and picture shops are rearranged. Sweets are bought and distributed. Candles and crackers are sold briskly.

It is a festival for shopping. Laxmi Pooja is performed. Shop-keepers perform pooja in their shops as well as at home. People greet their relatives and friends with sweets and crackers. Shops are lighted with colourful bulbs and attract a huge crowd.

The evening is the most interesting part of the day when houses are illuminated with earthen lamps or candles. Children burst crackers. One hears the sound of bursting bombs across the city. Everyone looks happy.
