1 Minute Speech on Yoga Day In English

A very good morning to one and all present here. Today, I will be giving a short speech on the topic of ‘Yoga Day’.

Wikipedia concisely briefs on this day as follows: “The International Day of Yoga has been celebrated across the world annually on June 21 since 2015, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in ancient India.”

Incidentally, India’s National Yoga Day also falls on this same day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when proposing this day, had said that “the date was the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere (shortest in the southern hemisphere), having special significance in many parts of the world.” Again, in Indian calendars, the summer solstice also marks the transition to Dakshinayana, making it all the more auspicious and cementing the connection yoga has with India.

This day is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of yoga and its benefits. Practice yoga!

Thank you.

Yoga is the culmination of physical, mental, spiritual and holistic ways of leading life. This discipline is said to have originated in India from more than 5,000 years. ‘Yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’, which means to ‘unite’. Speech on Yoga 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Yoga Speech in English, written in easy and simple words for class 7, 8, 9 and 10 school students.

Good morning to everyone present. Today is International Yoga Day 2021. We have been celebrating since its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Taking this opportunity, I would like to speak a few words on its benefits and why we need to incorporate yoga in our daily life. Yoga is a science of bringing balance between mind and body. It is an art of healthy living and is deeply rooted in our Indian Culture since ancient times.

Yoga is connected to spiritual discipline and is originated from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj’ meaning to join or to unite. It was initiated by Lord Shiva, who is also known as Adiyogi. Our Rishi, Sages and Saints have been practising and disseminating the same to the people. India being the pioneer, helped other countries realize its benefits and spiritual meaning affixed to it.

Also, there are different types of postures known as Asanas which forms the essential part of it. The poses are in alliance with breathing methods by keeping in mind all aspects of the body. Moreover, Gautama Buddha and Vardhaman Mahavir were too, patrons of yoga. They preached five great vows and eightfold path by keeping in consideration the yoga sadhana.

Even in Bhagwat Gita, the holy book of Hindus yoga is distinguished into three parts known as Gyan, Bhakti and Karma yoga. Yogic likes Gorakhnath, Mastyandranath and Shrinivasa Bhatt, popularised Hatha yoga. It works on the principle of integration of mind, body, emotion and energy. Every element of the body works in synergy to provide healthy well-being and peace. It assists in becoming a part of the universe by eradicating undesirable components of life.

Mind yoga calms our nervous system by reducing stress. The cells become active and get ready to perform tasks effectively. The level of concentration and focus increases drastically. A person feels full of energy and looks forward to start the day with positive vibes. Yoga not only develops physical strength but inner will too. Discipline and regulation bring order in day to day life which in turn helps in evading chaos.

It supports systematic living in sync with nature. The asana is related to the elements of nature and explains the benefit of living with it harmoniously. The immune system advances further contributing to better health and a resilient body. The white and red blood corpuscles fight diseases better and in an efficient way. Individuals with respiratory problems find development in the lungs.

Inhalation and exhalation improve. Digestive disorders like ulcers, ulcerative colitis and irritative bowls are brought under control through Kapalbhati. It also eases constipation. In conclusion, it is a way of life as an individual mind gets free from apprehensions. People develop positive energy to resist temptations and depression gracefully.

Yoga helps in healing and self-care. Relationships with family, friends, colleagues and others improve as it develops compassion and equality. Life will not be seen as a problem, and people will enjoy every aspect willingly and happily. I feel grateful and honoured to be born in India and thank everyone who attended this day and graced this occasion with enthusiasm.

Long And Short Speeches On Yoga for Students and Kids in English

Long speech on yoga 400 words in english.

Good Morning All!

As you know that today our Yoga Group Foundation has successfully completed one year, so today’s event has been organized to celebrate this one-year achievement. On this auspicious day, please allow me to heartily congratulate and express words of gratitude to our members of Yoga Group Foundation who worked hard to spread awareness among the masses about the benefit of yoga and helped made available necessary resources to make this one-year session a harbinger of bodily health and fitness with mental happiness. Also, I want to thank all the society people who never missed a day and showed enthusiasm to learn this art form and spread the teaching amongst others.

I, Nandini, your host for today’s event and one of the co-founders of this group wish to deliver a short speech on Yoga – the science behind it and forms its essence.

Many of us perform Yoga on a daily basis, but how many actually know about what this art form entails and why it is performed. So it’s basically a method to achieve balance in our bodies, i.e. gaining strength, increasing flexibility and attaining spirituality. Yoga also endorses a non-materialistic way of living. Yoga is more precisely described through the use of the Sanskrit word called “asana” which means the practicing of different types of physical postures or asanas. The yoga postures are an indispensable part of the yoga. Usually, the class begins with normal breathing exercises and then goes on to incorporate gentle asanas followed by more tough ones. The yoga asanas are performed keeping in mind all the body parts as well as combine breathing practices, including guided mediation.

There are different poses for which the instructor guides you throughout; these poses include standing, sitting, back bending, forward bends, upside-down asanas as well as twisting postures. Besides these, there are other different types of yoga which are especially tailored to suit the different needs of people. For instance, there is Hatha Yoga, which is the most practiced form and deals with the breathing exercises and bodily postures. Then there are two other types of yoga, i.e. Karma and Bhakti Yoga, which are advised to people who are looking to gain spiritual experience in life.

This is an art form known to humanity from thousands of years whose history can be traced back to 3,000 BC. Since then, it is being practiced by various spiritual gurus and in the contemporary times, yoga is being looked up as a disciplinary form itself to be taught in various schools and colleges. The definitive aim of yoga is to help a person rise above the self and gain a sublime experience. Even in Bhagavad-Gita, it is written, “A person is said to have achieved yoga, the union with the Self, when the perfectly disciplined mind gets freedom from all desires, and becomes absorbed in the Self alone.” Though it’s not a religion, but it is certainly a mode of living life that works towards attaining a sound mind as well as a healthy body.

So unleash the power of yoga, feel energized and develop a zest of living.

Long Speech On Yoga 500 Words in English

Hon’ble Principal, Hon’ble Chief Guest, Fellow Teachers and My Lovely Students – Warm Greetings to all!

I, your senior yoga teacher, heartily welcome everyone to today’s weekly event, of which Yoga is a major highlight. To begin with, I would like to deliver a short speech on Yoga with a view to spread more awareness about this subject amongst you all.

Workout trends come and go, but literally no other form of exercise is as stable as yoga and it has been around for over a period of 5,000 years now. International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21st every year. On June 21st, the world unites in harmony, Celebrating Yoga Day, a global serenity symphony. Yoga helps us way beyond than just burning the calories and toning down our muscles. It’s an all-inclusive workout that focuses on both mind and body. Under yoga training, one performs all kinds of stretching and strengthening poses, including deep breathing, relaxation or meditation.

Currently, over 100 diverse forms of yoga are known, which are rigorous and intense while others are mild and relaxing. There are six different forms of yoga that are well-known today:

  • Hatha – The form is mainly related with yoga and combines a sequence of basic movements, including breathing.
  • Vinyasa – It includes a sequence of poses which smoothly flow from one to the other.
  • Iyengar – It is a type of yoga which makes use of props, such as straps, blocks and chairs in order to help one move his/her body with the proper alignment.
  • Bikram – Also called as “hot yoga”, this form includes a sequence of 26 complex poses performed in a heated room that carries a high temperature.
  • Power – A more rapid, greater-intensity practice that shapes muscles.
  • Ashtanga – A sequence of poses that combines an exceptional breathing technique.

You just name it and you’ll get it! Beautiful, glowing skin; a well-built, flexible body; regulated weight; sound health and calm mind – the benefits of yoga include all this and so much more. However, more often than not yoga is being seen to be restricted to asanas, i.e. poses. This is the reason why its benefits are only identified at the bodily level and we overlook its enormous benefits that yoga offers in bringing together the body and mind. When both your body and mind are in sync with each other, then life becomes more fulfilling and happier than ever before.

So everyone must practice yoga and make it a part of daily routine in order to get a strong, flexible and supple body. Its regular practice helps improve your body posture while you walk, sit or sleep. This will in turn also help you relive your body pain owing to inappropriate postures.

Yoga when combined with meditation has the power to better your intuitive skills so that you can quickly ascertain what is required to be done, when it is to be done and how in order to gain positive results. This does work wonders and you can experience the change yourself only when you practice it without fail.

Remember yoga is a never ending process. The deeper you delve into it, the more fruitful will be the results. That’s all I can say.

Now, let me call on stage our hon’ble chief guest to say few words.

Many people wonder that what is yoga and how it can help in maintaining physical and mental stability? Yoga is a process for the union of body and mind or we can say that it is a process of maintaining stability between body and mind. In ancient period, yoga was a way of attaining enlightenment. In today’s world of high technology and hectic life, yoga is playing an important role in maintaining fitness and mental stability in our body and mind. It consists of various poses and postures of the body and in Sanskrit language we call it “ asanas ”. Some poses or asanas are complicated and therefore they need proper implications but some of them are very simple and can be practiced on our own. Many people choose to join yoga classes but some people who are not comfortable at classes, so they could buy yoga DVDs that are available in markets.

The formation of different kinds of yoga has been done to reach the solutions of different problems of people. Many people practice yoga on daily basis and hence they know the effects and positive changes that occurs in their body and life due to yoga. There could be no instant effect but if it is practiced on daily basis then the results could be seem. Yoga should become an integral part of our life just like sleeping and eating.

The benefits of yoga are infinite and it has the potential to cure many diseases. Many people are practicing yoga in today’s world to remain healthy. For aged people who cannot do intensive exercises, yoga proves to be a best choice for them. In yoga, we practice postures on the basis of its difficulty. We should start with a simple pose and then pursue for a difficult one.

Many people and even small kids have respiratory problems these days due to air pollution and lack of fresh air. In yoga, there are many poses and exercises that have the potential to cure respiratory problems. But not only respiratory but also it helps in curing many other diseases related to our nervous system, abdominal problems, joint problems etc. For instance, “ bending poses” are done for strengthening joints and muscles, “ balancing poses ” are done for strengthening arms and legs, “seated yoga poses ” are done for flexibility and reliving mental stress, “supine yoga poses” are done for flexibility and there are many other different kinds of poses.

An Introduction to Yoga

Yoga is the ancient way to attain physical, mental, and spiritual practice. Primarily originating in India, the word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit, meaning to unite. This unity signifies the ultimate union of the body with consciousness and thus attaining definitive peace.

Recognizing the universal appeal of Yoga, on December 11 2014, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 to be marked as the International Day of Yoga.

It was first started by our present Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He celebrated Yoga Day for the first time on June 21 in 2015, after which Yoga Day started being celebrated all over the world on June 15, and it turned into International Yoga Day. Since then, Yoga Day has been celebrated every year by the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) in India.

As per the calendar, this date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere. Also, from the Yoga's perspective, this summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana. Dakshinayana is the six-month tenure for the sun to travel to the south on the celestial sphere in between the Summer and the Winter solstice.

In today's times, this is practised in various forms across different parts of the world and is growing more and more popular. The main aim of celebrating International Day of Yoga is to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits of Yoga. However, Yoga is much more than just a mere physical activity.

As per one of the famous Yoga practitioners, late B. K. S. Iyengar, Yoga is the best way to cultivate and maintain a balanced attitude in daily life while bequeathing the best of performance skills in every action being made.

History of International Yoga Day

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that originated somewhere around 5,000 years ago in India. This was looked up as a process and technique to interconnect the mind, body and soul together and take a step closer to enlightenment. As this practice gained popularity in the West, this started to be termed an exercise and relaxation method. This was also associated with the claims to alleviate any existing physical injuries and chronic pains.

The idea to mark June 21 as International Yoga Day was first proposed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. It was during his UN General Assembly speech where the resolution was introduced by India's Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji, to June 21 as International Yoga Day.

On June 21, 2015, i.e., when this day was first celebrated, more than 36,000 people from all over India joined Prime Minister Modi to perform 21 yoga postures, also called asanas, for 35 minutes at Rajpath, New Delhi. Shri Narendra Modi was further joined by other high-profile political and famous leaders across the globe.

What is Yoga?

Yoga is a process in which man tries to bring his mind, body and soul together. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to meet or be united. Yoga originates from Indian culture. People have been practising Yoga since about 5000 years ago. Yoga does not have physical fitness primarily; in Yoga, people try to control their body and mind through mental focus and breathing methods.

A lot of methods have been conveyed about how someone can control their mind, their emotion, and merge into spirituality.

Role of India to promote Yoga

Yoga originated in India. Yoga has been practised in India for about 5000 years; every person in India knows about Yoga very much in advance, people know its benefits, and it has been done before it became popular in the world. In his speech given in the UN, the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, gave the idea of making International Yoga important.

He said in his speech," Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but discovering the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. Changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness can help in well-being. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day."

With this, the UN Assembly accepted this proposal and decided to celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21 every year. Also, there are several exercises being organized in the schools like writing International Yoga Day Essays for students in English and other vernacular languages.

Significance of Yoga

Shiva, also known as Adiyogi, is considered the originator and creator of Yoga. This was further brought to the masses by the Saptarishis. As per the Indian mythological story, Shiva sat in a meditating position for years. Then, seven people were impressed by his level of determination, so they decided to learn from him, and they sat still for more than 84 years.

After this, Lord Shiva noticed these 7 beings on the summer solstice day and transmitted the science of meditation to the Saptarishis (7 rishis).

Speaking of the physical benefits of Yoga, it is indeed a perfect way to keep our body healthy and fit. Moreover, regular practice of Yoga boosts our metabolism and aids in maintaining a healthy weight, thereby preventing obesity and related diseases.

However, Yoga is not just about physical health. It is also a powerful tool for mental and emotional wellbeing. In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become common issues, affecting people of all age groups. Here, Yoga comes as a panacea, with its emphasis on breath control and meditation. What is health? Is it the state of being free from all the physical inconveniences? Is health only related to our physical body?

No, not at all. We can define health as the state of being free from any illness. Just like the human body requires pharmaceutical medicines for preventing or curing diseases, our mind requires the assistance of yoga for its healing processes. In simpler terms, we can define yoga as a physical activity for bridging the gap between the mind (soul) and the physical body. It can be considered as an amalgamated version of art and science that helps individuals to lead a tranquil and healthy lifestyle.

Yoga is an ancient practice involving the mind and body for promoting the mental and physical well-being of individuals. It is believed that the origin of yoga is in India. The main processes involved in yoga are meditation, physical movements, gestures, and some breathing techniques. For getting good health results from yoga, it is essential to follow the perfect physical poses and breath control exercises. A regular follow up of all these activities is mandatory for getting the best results.

Sample Speeches on Yoga

A few samples of speeches on yoga are given below. Please go through them for your better understanding of the topic.

Every single time we hear the term ’yoga’, the very first image that comes to our minds will be that of a highly flexible individual performing some daring asanas (body postures). Then most probably, it will be the image of an individual in white dress sitting peacefully on a yoga mat placed in the centre of a dark green lawn with dewdrops shining like gems in the pure yellow morning sunlight.. What a rejuvenating scene, right?

These days, the practice of yoga is gaining a lot of acceptance from people all over the world. Have you ever wondered why? What is the reason behind this increased attention? Why is the world now celebrating the International Day of Yoga in June every year?

Let’s remember the words of Marcus Garvey, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots”. So let’s strengthen our roots.

The very first mention of the word ‘yoga’ is in the ‘Rig Veda’, an ancient Indian collection of Vedic texts. It is believed that the ‘Rig Veda’ is one of the oldest books in the world, written eight to ten thousand years ago. The word ‘yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’. ‘Yuj’ means ‘union’ or ‘to join’. Therefore, from the meaning of the word itself, the idea is comprehensible. That is, yoga is the union of the individual’s body and the universe. Everyone can do yoga. You do not have to get frightened by the several yoga terminologies you hear or the tangled poses you see.

Performing yoga provides multiple benefits for individuals. There are both physical and mental benefits. Regular practice of yoga will help to increase human body muscle strength. Performing asanas will remove the unwanted fat deposits around the stomach and waist. It will also enhance the performance of all our organs, making us stay active 24×7. Yoga helps to improve flexibility. By performing yoga on a regular basis, individuals can move their body parts in all the possible directions as they wish; their body will no longer resist the flow or cause troubles for their movements. The ability to stretch the human body improves the balance of our body, and also offers multiple physical and mental benefits. Yoga promotes better breathing. When we deeply focus on breathing while performing asanas, without our conscious awareness, our control of the process of breathing shifts slowly from the medulla oblongata to the cerebral cortex improves. As this shift happens, our mind gets much calmer. This is what biologically happens when we focus on breathing while performing yoga. As a result, the energy (prana) starts its free flow. It breaks all the emotional and physical blockages that our body has and thus frees our body and mind. Furthermore, it helps to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. It encourages the relaxation of the human mind and body. Many physical postures that we follow while performing yoga are not done only to enhance the flexibility of our body, but also plays a vital role in relieving tensions and other sorrows. By performing yoga, the human body gets prompted to release hormones called ‘endorphins’. Endorphins are the hormones produced by the action of the pituitary gland and central nervous system. These hormones can also be called the feel-good hormones — they are our body’s natural pain relievers. So it is better to try performing it regularly for a better, peaceful and happy living.

Even though ‘yoga’ has evolved a lot from its ancient form, its base is still the same. There exists multiple options for individuals to choose from in yoga. Yoga is available to us in various styles. Modern-day yoga offers individuals to make their choice based on the goal they expect by performing yoga on a regular basis. Some of the popular types of yoga are Ashtanga yoga, Bikram yoga, Hatha yoga, Iyengar yoga, Kripalu yoga, Kundalini yoga, Power yoga, Sivananda, Viniyoga, and Prenatal yoga. People worldwide are trying to learn yoga with the motive of enjoying a healthy life. Learning and practising yoga is not expensive, and it is a very comfortable physical exercise. No heavy machines or expensive tools are required for doing yoga. So stop finding excuses and try to start practising it as soon as possible. Your body will love it.

One of the most obvious benefits of yoga is its ability to improve flexibility and strength. By holding various yoga poses, or asanas, for extended periods of time, practitioners can increase their range of motion and build muscle. Additionally, yoga is a low-impact exercise, which means it is gentle on the joints and can be practiced by people of all ages and fitness levels.

But yoga is much more than just a physical practice. The breathing and relaxation techniques used in yoga can have a profound effect on mental health. Studies have shown that regular yoga practice can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. By focusing on the breath and being present in the moment, practitioners can quiet their minds and find a sense of peace and tranquility.

Yoga is also a great way to connect with others. Many yoga classes are taught in a group setting, which provides an opportunity to meet like-minded people and build a sense of community. The non-competitive nature of yoga means that everyone can practice at their own pace and level, without feeling judged or inadequate.

So whether you are looking to improve your physical health, mental well-being, or social connections, yoga has something to offer. It is a practice that can be adapted to suit your individual needs and preferences, and can be done anywhere, anytime.

In the end, I would like to encourage you all to try yoga for yourself. Whether you attend a class, practice at home, or just incorporate a few simple poses into your daily routine, I am confident that you will feel the benefits of this amazing practice.

There were teachers all around us to help us in case we had trouble performing or understanding asanas. All the students participated eagerly.

Our school celebrated yoga day with great reverence every year. Our physical education classes include yoga sessions every day. We learn different standing and sitting asanas.

This year, our Yoga day celebration started with meditation. After meditation, we shifted to sun salutation. We completed 51 sun salutations. After the sun salutations, we had a yoga competition.

The competition was conducted in three levels- beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Shrutika Kaur, Jagjeet Mohan and Ritika Singh were the winners of the competition this year. Due to regular Yoga practice, most students were experts at their levels.

Next, we had yoga classes in three sessions, one was at 9 am, another at 10 am and the last session at 4 pm. This was held at the school auditorium. To avoid unwanted commotions the sessions were organised with precise planning. There was a talk given by Dr. Gaur Sehgal.

Dr. Sehgal has been a yoga practitioner for more than 25 years. He holds a master and has completed a PhD in Advanced Yoga. Students were organised in rows to avoid crowding.

Our school held a virtual yoga session for us. This year’s theme for world yoga day was “Staying fit at home”. This was an excellent theme since due to the covid situation, gatherings and celebrations were not possible.

The school authorities helped us understand the importance of yoga in daily life. Yoga plays a significant role since it helps people lead a better life with elevated physical, mental and spiritual health.

There were different videos showing the benefits of yoga in daily life. Yoga also helps in the regulation of hormones. It also helps in maintaining physical fitness. Yoga helps people increase flexibility.

Even though the yoga day celebration was at home we were still happy. Our school physical education teacher showed us the sun salutation and carefully explained the meaning of each asana in the sun salutation.

A few teachers were monitoring all of us online and pointed out our mistakes instantly. We took a pledge that we will do exercises every day and eat healthy food to improve our immunity. After the program was done, a virtual pdf was shared that explained the basic asanas and their importance.

 Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson admitted she never wanted to walk down the aisle despite saying “I do” to Brandon Blackstock.

“No. I never wanted to get married the first time,” she told People in an interview published Wednesday.

“[Brandon] had children, a religious background, and it was important, I think, for him. But I’ve never been that person.”

The “Since You’ve Been Gone” songstress — who filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 — furthered that she isn’t one to push for marriage after witnessing several broken relationships throughout her life.

“Because I’ve been through a couple divorces in my family, I just don’t like to put any weight on it. It can happen; it doesn’t have to happen,” she continued.

“For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house.”

Clarkson, 41, and Blackstock, 47, were married for nearly seven years before they called it quits.

The former couple’s breakup led to the Grammy winner reportedly receiving full custody of their daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington “Remy” Alexander, 7 — with Blackstock receiving the kids one weekend per month.

Brandon also shares daughter Savannah Blackstock, 21, and Seth Blackstock, 17, with his ex-wife Melissa Ashworth.

Meanwhile, Clarkson isn’t interested in finding her soul mate anytime soon.

“Dating sucks. It’s so awkward,” she said. “I was single until I was, like, 30, and I forgot how really good at that I am.”

But if the “Because Of You” songstress has learned anything from her past relationships, it’s learning what she wants in a potential partner.

“I told a friend [that my future partner] would have to be an individual that brings their own life to the table without needing anything from me,” she added.

“It’s far more romantic to say, ‘I want you, but I don’t need anything.’ I’m really good right now, I’m having a good time.”

This isn’t the first time Clarkson has opened up about embracing the single life.

Kelly Clarkson

In fact, the “Stronger” hitmaker revealed in September that she didn’t have a boyfriend and was “not looking.”

“I have two kids, two dogs, three rabbits, a hamster, multiple jobs — there’s a lot going on,” she said on Instagram Live. “And, you know, you think you’re going to spend the rest of your life with somebody, and you don’t. That’s hard to start over.”

She also joked that she’d be “single forever” during a segment of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in December 2021.

Follow live news updates on the Israel-Hamas war .

One commentator calls the killing of a top Hamas official a ‘gamble.’

Many Israelis welcomed the assassination of a top Hamas official in Beirut as a necessary, even inevitable, step in the campaign to destroy Hamas that Israel has been waging since the terror group’s brutal Oct. 7 attacks.

But some analysts said the killing of the official, Saleh al-Arouri , on Tuesday carries risks for Israel, and the benefits are unclear. The assassination appeared likely to put on ice any talks between Israel and Hamas over freeing more hostages taken on Oct. 7, dealing yet another setback to families waiting desperately for their loved ones to come home.

While the death of Mr. al-Arouri, a key strategist and liaison with Hamas’s Iranian sponsors, was a blow to the group , analysts said, it has rebounded before. And the assassination adds fuel to tensions along Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, home of Hezbollah, another Iran-backed group that has waged war with Israel. Hezbollah’s frequent rocket fire has forced evacuation border communities, and the group has warned that any assassination in Lebanon would draw a strong response.

Even so, members of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s extreme right-wing government welcomed the killing and the show of strength it displayed. “So shall your enemies perish, Israel,” Bezalel Smotrich, the far-right finance minister, wrote on social media, quoting from the Old Testament.

Danny Danon, a member of Parliament from Mr. Netanyahu’s Likud party, posted, “All those involved in the October massacre should know we’ll get to them, and we’ll settle the score.”

Israel has not taken responsibility for the strike that killed Mr. al-Arouri and several comrades, but officials with Hamas, Lebanon and the United States have said Israel was behind it, which Israelis appeared to take for granted.

On Wednesday, a State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said at a daily news briefing that the United States had not been forewarned of the strike. “We continue to believe it is not in Hezbollah’s interest, just as it is not in Israel’s interest, to escalate this conflict in any way,” he said.

Given the multiple risks and unclear benefits, Ehud Olmert, a former prime minister, questioned why the decision was made to kill Mr. al-Arouri now. Mr. al-Arouri’s focus had always been the West Bank, not Gaza, he said.

“Was he that important? I’m not so sure,” Mr. Olmert said. “There is room to ask this question. Was it urgent? Was it important to do this now? And was it more important than other things?”

Many families of hostages are increasingly skeptical of Mr. Netanyahu’s promises to make the return of the captives a top priority in the war, and fear that they could be murdered or mistreated in retaliation to the assassination.

“Of course this doesn’t help — it hurts,” said Lior Peri, whose 79-year-old father, Chaim, was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz. “I don’t know who’s in charge and giving the order, but they’re definitely not thinking about the hostages.”

“A gamble” is how a column in the Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronoth labeled the killing on Wednesday.

“Of all the possible reactions Hamas may take, the most disconcerting is with regard to the hostages,” wrote the columnist, Nachum Barnea. “The argument that the assassination will soften Sinwar’s position is just a story we tell ourselves,” he wrote, referring to the Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, adding that the killing was likely to “delay, or even torpedo, the negotiations” for their release.

Mr. Netanyahu met with representatives of hostage families on Tuesday evening, around the very time that the strike took place, and told them efforts to free their loved ones were continuing. “The contacts are being held; they have not been cut off,” he said.

Israel, familiar with the seemingly endless cycle of attacks and counterattacks in the Middle East, is bracing for retribution.

Many residents who live along the northern border with Lebanon have already been displaced from their homes for months because of rocket fire by Hezbollah, with whom Mr. al-Arouri had worked closely.

After the killing, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, said in a televised briefing that Israeli forces were “on very high alert on all fronts, for defensive and offensive actions.” He emphasized that Israel was “focused on fighting Hamas,” in what some Israeli analysts interpreted as a suggestion that it did not seek a wider war with Hezbollah.

Israeli public support for destroying Hamas is broad but not unqualified: After almost three months of war in Gaza, and amid growing international pressure to limit the rising number of Palestinian civilian deaths, many Israelis are beginning to voice out loud questions about whether the goal is realistic, and whether the country could bear the toll it would take to achieve it.

Most senior Hamas leaders within Gaza have eluded capture, and though Israel has begun pulling some troops out of the enclave in what appears to be the start of a shift toward a new stage of the war, few in the country were prepared for a conflict of this length and with such heavy casualties.

Israel’s high court delivers another setback to Netanyahu.

Israel’s Supreme Court on Wednesday delayed the enactment of a new law that makes it harder to remove a prime minister from office — the court’s second ruling in three days that impeded attempts by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to gain more power.

The new measure says that a sitting prime minister can be judged unfit for office and removed only by votes of three-quarters of cabinet ministers and two-thirds of the Parliament. Previously, a prime minister could have been ruled unfit for office by the attorney general and the courts.

But the Supreme Court, in a 6-to-5 decision, ruled on Wednesday that the law would not go into effect until the next Parliament is elected — meaning, for now, the old standard still applies. The court found that the bill was intended to serve Mr. Netanyahu, who is on trial for a litany of corruption charges .

On Monday, the Supreme Court overturned a law limiting its own power to block government actions as unreasonable, a decision that has divided the nation .

Critics say that both laws, part of a package pushed by the right-wing government and approved last year by the Parliament, were devised to remove checks and balances on government power and to shield Mr. Netanyahu from oversight and dismissal.

“It is very clear that six of the judges think this is a misuse of constitutional power because of the personal nature of the amendment,” Amir Fuchs, a constitutional law expert at the Israel Democracy Institute, a nonpartisan research group, said of the ruling on Wednesday. “It is their using powerful legislation to benefit one person.”

The law was challenged shortly after it was ratified by groups including the Movement for Quality Government, a leading Israeli rights watchdog. On Wednesday, the group called the law “crudely tailored to the personal needs of a prime minister accused of crimes.”

“The court’s decision is an important victory for the Israeli public,” the Movement for Quality Government said in a statement. The ruling contains an important message, the group added, that the rules of Israeli democracy “are not a piece of putty in the hands of the prime minister.”

Mr. Netanyahu’s supporters have criticized both the rulings and the timing of the decisions during the continuing war in Gaza.

“This ruling, like the one preceding it, has no validity, as it contradicts basic laws legislated in a democratic process by an elected parliament,” Shlomo Karhi , Israel’s communications minister and a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party posted on social media.

Maps: Tracking the Attacks in Israel and Gaza

See where the Israeli military advanced along a new front into central Gaza.

Hezbollah’s leader pledges revenge for the killing of a top Hamas leader in Beirut.

Just 24 hours before he took to the podium on Wednesday, Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Lebanon’s powerful armed group Hezbollah, was preparing to deliver a speech commemorating another of Israel’s former arch foes, Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian commander killed in a U.S. drone strike four years ago to the day.

But in the wake of the suspected Israeli assassination on Tuesday of Saleh al-Arouri, a top Hamas leader killed in the heart of Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut, Mr. Nasrallah revised his comments to commemorate not just one of his closest allies, but two.

In a highly anticipated speech on Wednesday that gained new significance in the wake of Mr. al-Arouri’s assassination, Hezbollah’s leader denounced the attack in Lebanon’s capital as a “dangerous” milestone, pledging revenge for the killing and threatening to meet any wider Israeli conflict with unrestrained warfare.

“If the enemy considers waging a war against Lebanon, our battle will be without boundaries or rules,” Mr. Nasrallah said. “We are not afraid of war. Those who think of going to war with us will regret it. War with us will come at a very, very, very high cost.”

“Yesterday’s crime will not go unpunished,” he warned ominously in his closing.

But Mr. Nasrallah refrained from saying exactly how his group would respond to the assassination, adding that he would instead discuss the killing of Mr. al-Arouri at more depth in another speech on Friday. Despite a string of cross-border attacks on Israel by Hezbollah in the wake of Mr. al-Arouri’s assassination, none so far have signaled a marked escalation.

Israel has not publicly accepted or denied responsibility for the killing, but American and Lebanese officials have said Israel carried it out.

Hezbollah’s seeming hesitancy to react too soon to the killing fit with analysts’ assessment that the assassination on Lebanese soil had significantly complicated Hezbollah’s calculations regarding its escalating battle with Israel.

“It is a very uncomfortable moment for Hezbollah,” said Emile Hokayem, the director for regional security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “It is not something that can be brushed under the carpet very easily.”

Mr. Nasrallah had long warned that any assassinations on Lebanese territory would necessitate a strong response. But now, with the war in Gaza bringing regional tensions to a boiling point, any significant escalation would likely spell catastrophe.

“He really has his back against the wall,” Mr. Hoyakem said.

Mr. Nasrallah dedicated much of his speech on Wednesday to reaffirming Hezbollah’s steadfastness in the war that began with the Hamas-led attack launched from Gaza against Israel on Oct. 7.

“The resistance in Lebanon is more daring and prepared than ever,” Mr. Nasrallah said, the crowds at his televised address frequently erupting into raucous applause.

In earlier speeches during the war, Mr. Nasrallah described Hezbollah’s objective as supporting Hamas by engaging in a controlled battle aimed at diverting and sapping Israel’s military. However, the fighting and accompanying rhetoric on both sides have only intensified, further deepening fears of all-out regional war, even as U.S. officials scramble to broker a peace .

Alluding to Lebanon’s myriad crises even before the outbreak of the conflict, Mr. Nasrallah then doubled down. If Israel chooses to wage war on Lebanon, he threatened, then the nation’s interest will be “to go to the war till the end, unrestrained.”

The Israeli military says a hostage was killed in a rescue attempt last month, but it is unclear by whom.

The Israeli military said on Wednesday that Sahar Baruch, 25, who was taken hostage during the Hamas-led terror attacks on Oct. 7, was killed last month during a rescue attempt but added that it was not yet possible to determine whether he was killed by Hamas or by fire from its own forces.

The military wing of Hamas, the Qassam Brigades, had said on Telegram on Dec. 8 that Israeli special forces tried to rescue Mr. Baruch but that he was killed amid the clashes. It did not say who was responsible.

A day later, a statement from Kibbutz Be’eri, where Mr. Baruch had lived and where he was kidnapped, announcing that he had been “murdered” in captivity without providing further details.

The Israeli military said that it notified Mr. Baruch’s family on Wednesday of the confirmation of his death in a rescue attempt and of the uncertainty over exactly how, and added that it would continue to support his family, as well as all of the families of hostages.

“We are working in all ways, intelligence and operational, to return the hostages home,” it said in a statement.

Criticism has grown that Israel’s deadly bombardment of Gaza — which has killed over 20,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, according to Gazan health authorities — further endangers the remaining hostages there. The military’s operations have also been questioned since December, when the military announced that it had mistakenly killed three young men being held in Gaza.

The Israeli military has revealed that the three hostages were shirtless, unarmed, bore a white flag and had cried out for help in Hebrew before they were fatally shot by its forces, disclosures that renewed calls for a cease-fire to release more hostages.

More than 120 hostages remain in Gaza, according to Israeli officials, and will soon reach their third month in captivity.

Ilan Weiss, who went missing from Kibbutz Be’eri on Oct. 7, is now considered to have been killed that day.

Ilan Weiss, the father and husband of two released hostages who was considered missing following the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, is now thought to have been killed that day, his kibbutz said this week.

On the morning of the attacks, he left his home to help distribute weapons to emergency squad members who were defending his community, Kibbutz Be’eri, and was not heard from again.

In a joint statement on Monday with the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a nongovernmental volunteer group supporting the hostages and their families, Kibbutz Be’eri cited forensic examinations indicating that he was dead and said it recognized Mr. Weiss, 56, as a soldier killed in the line of duty.

The statement described him as a family man and a devoted father to his several daughters. His wife, Shiri Weiss, and one daughter, Noga Weiss, were kidnapped from the family’s home in Kibbutz Be’eri during the attacks and were held in Gaza until Nov. 25, when they were released as part of a deal between Israel and Hamas.

“He was a well-known and respected man among his entire community, which he loved so much,” the statement said.

Mr. Weiss was also the deputy head of a local emergency team and also had provided logistical support to the kibbutz’s emergency squad, according to the statement.

No community in Israel lost more people on Oct. 7 than Kibbutz Be’eri, a small, tightly knit community just east of Gaza. At least 97 civilians were killed that day, or about one in 10 of the community’s residents.

Hamas militants stormed the kibbutz just after sunrise that day, setting houses ablaze and gunning down residents in hiding, according to a Times reconstruction of the attacks. The community’s youngest victim was less than a year old; the oldest was 88.

Across Israel, an estimated 1,200 people were killed after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack that day, prompting an Israeli campaign on Gaza in retaliation that has killed more than 20,000 people.

Aaron Boxerman contributed reporting.

A dozen countries warn of consequences for Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

A dozen nations, including the United States, warned the Houthi militia in Yemen on Wednesday of unspecified consequences if it continued to attack shipping in the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest commercial routes.

“The Houthis will bear the responsibility of the consequences should they continue to threaten lives, the global economy, and free flow of commerce in the region’s critical waterways,” the United States and allies said in a joint statement released by the White House. “We remain committed to the international rules-based order and are determined to hold malign actors accountable for unlawful seizures and attacks.”

The statement did not elaborate on what actions might be taken. The allied nations signing onto the statement were Australia, Bahrain, Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands and New Zealand.

Also on Wednesday, the United States accused Iran, which has supplied weapons and intelligence to the Houthis, of direct and indirect involvement in the Red Sea attacks.

“We must not overlook the root of the problem: Iran has long enabled these attacks by the Houthis,” Christopher P. Lu, a member of the U.S. mission to the United Nations, said at a meeting of the Security Council on Wednesday. The council did not take any action on the matter.

“We also know that Iran has been deeply involved in planning operations against commercial vessels in the Red Sea,” Ambassador Lu added.

The Houthis are, like Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian territories, backed by Iran, and together with Iran and Syria make up what has been called the “axis of resistance” to Israel and the United States. After years of a long-running civil war in Yemen against a government backed by Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally often at odds with Iran, the Houthis exercise de facto control over most of northern Yemen.

Since the Israel-Hamas war began almost three months ago, Hezbollah has stepped up rocket attacks on northern Israel, and drones and missiles have been launched from Yemen toward Israel, raising fears of a wider regional war.

The Houthis have also fired repeatedly on commercial ships heading to and from the Suez Canal — more than 20 times, Ambassador Lu said. The statement by the United States and its allies cited “attacks on vessels, including commercial vessels, using unmanned aerial vehicles, small boats, and missiles, including the first use of anti-ship ballistic missiles against such vessels.”

On Nov. 19, the Houthis seized a cargo ship and its crew — the British-owned, Japanese-operated Galaxy Leader. The militia is still holding them.

Houthi attacks have damaged several ships but have not sunk any. On Sunday, U.S. forces patrolling the region sank three Houthi boats that officials said had attacked a commercial ship as well as the Americans coming to its aid.

“We remain incredibly concerned, as we have been from the outset of this conflict, about the risk of the conflict spreading into other fronts,” Matthew Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters on Wednesday.

Wang Wenbin, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a daily briefing in Beijing on Thursday that China wanted security in the Red Sea. But he did not directly respond to a question about why China had not signed the joint statement issued by the United States and 11 of its allies.

“China has always advocated maintaining the security of international waterways and has opposed attacks on civilian vessels,” Mr. Wang said.

Ordinarily, 15 percent of the world’s trade passes through the Red Sea-Suez route, Arsenio Dominguez, secretary general of the International Maritime Organization, an arm of the U.N., told the Security Council.

But many shipping companies have stopped using that passage, instead sending ships around the southern tip of Africa. Mr. Dominguez said that taking that route adds 10 days to voyages, slowing trade and raising prices worldwide.

European officials join the U.S. in rejecting 2 Israeli ministers’ comments on Palestinians leaving Gaza.

Officials from France, Germany and the European Union have joined the United States in denouncing recent comments by two far-right Israel ministers suggesting that Palestinian civilians should voluntarily leave Gaza, stressing that a two-state solution was the only path forward in the region.

“There must be no expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza, nor must there be any territorial reduction of the Gaza Strip,” said Sebastian Fischer, a spokesman for the German foreign ministry, during a government news conference on Wednesday. He said the two-state solution remained “the only sustainable model for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians.”

And in a phone call on Tuesday with Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, President Emmanuel Macron of France told him that “statements about the forced displacement of Gazans were unacceptable and contradicted the two-state solution, which is the only viable way to return to peace and security for all,” according to a statement from Mr. Macron’s office.

The E.U.’s high representative for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell Fontelles, also condemned the statements , saying on social media that forced displacements were a “grave violation” of international humanitarian law and that “words matter.”

The criticism from Western officials came after two far-right officials in the government of the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu — Itamar Ben-Gvir, the national security minister, and Bezalel Smotrich, the finance minister — said separately on Monday that the “correct” solution to the war would involve Palestinians resettling outside of Gaza while Israel maintains control of the enclave through Jewish resettlements. Both men reside in West Bank settlements, which are considered illegal by the United States, France, Germany and many other countries.

A State Department spokesman, Matthew Miller, rejected the Israeli officials’ comments on Tuesday, calling them “inflammatory and irresponsible.”

“We have been told repeatedly and consistently by the Government of Israel, including by the Prime Minister, that such statements do not reflect the policy of the Israeli government,” he said in a statement. “They should stop immediately.”

Mr. Miller added that the United States has been “clear, consistent and unequivocal that Gaza is Palestinian land and will remain Palestinian land,” without Hamas in control in the future.

Mr. Macron also said in his call with Mr. Gantz that it was important to avoid further escalation in Lebanon and the greater region. France’s Foreign Ministry echoed that sentiment on Wednesday, adding that Catherine Colonna, the French foreign minister, would be meeting her counterparts in the region “in the coming days.”

The W.H.O. chief condemns a strike on the Red Crescent headquarters in southern Gaza.

The World Health Organization’s chief has condemned a deadly strike that hit the headquarters of the Palestine Red Crescent Society in southern Gaza, an area where hundreds of thousands of displaced people are living in crowded conditions.

The Red Crescent accused Israel of shelling its headquarters in Gaza on Tuesday, resulting in at least five deaths among displaced Palestinians who had been sheltering in the area, including a five-day-old baby. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a statement on social media, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the W.H.O., said workers for the W.H.O. and the U.N. humanitarian office who visited the Red Crescent’s facilities in Khan Younis found extensive damage. He said that 14,000 people had been sheltering at the Red Crescent’s Al-Amal hospital next door, and that many had now left or were “planning to leave a place they had turned to for refuge and protection.”

“Today’s bombardments are unconscionable,” Dr. Tedros said. “Gaza’s health system is already on its knees, with health and aid workers continuously stymied in their efforts to save lives due to the hostilities.” The W.H.O. statement did not name Israel.

The Red Crescent said that the 7th and 8th floors of its headquarters had been hit in two separate strikes about half an hour apart. A video posted to its account on X , formerly known as Twitter, appeared to show rescue workers making their way through rubble on one floor of the building, and broken glass shattered on makeshift sleeping areas.

More than 20,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war, most of them civilians, according to the local health authorities, primarily in Israeli bombing. Israel has said that its bombardment of Gaza is aimed at eradicating Hamas, which conducted the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed about 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities.

As hostage negotiations face another hurdle, families vow to keep the pressure on Netanyahu.

Since Oct. 7, Ayelet Svatitzky has been living in an emotional whirlwind. She is mourning one brother who was killed in Hamas’s terrorist attack. She is campaigning for the release of another being held hostage in Gaza. And she is caring for her mother, who was set free in November during a short-lived cease-fire.

“I feel helpless, because our lives and the lives of our loved ones are dependent on so many things that are out of our reach,” Ms. Svatitzky said in a phone interview, adding that “every day that goes by is a danger to the hostages.”

Nearly three months after the attack that left Israel reeling, the families of many hostages are still being whipsawed by events out of their control, trying to balance feelings of helplessness and despair with the need to continue pressuring the Israeli government and the public to help secure the release of the more than 125 people still being held in Gaza.

The killing of Saleh al-Arouri this week appeared to add another complication to negotiations for a hostage release. Some of the hostage families met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, at roughly the same time that word emerged of an explosion in Beirut that killed the high-ranking Hamas leader.

Matty Dancyg, whose father, Alex Dancyg, 75, was kidnapped in the Oct. 7 attack, was at the meeting with Mr. Netanyahu. He said that while he left feeling that the hostages were a priority for the government, he still had a feeling of being at a “dead end, because it looks like the hostage deal isn’t going anywhere.”

In interviews, many of the families declined to discuss the possible impact of Mr. al-Arouri’s death. Israeli government officials have said throughout the war that they are simultaneously focused on eliminating Hamas and on returning the hostages, and that continued military pressure on Hamas could bring it to the negotiating table.

Ronen Tzur, the head of the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, which represents families with relatives kidnapped in Gaza, said his group continued to work closely with the government to try to push negotiation efforts forward.

On Wednesday, the group’s Tel Aviv headquarters was a hub of activity as hostage family members and volunteers continued with strategic meetings, press interviews and public organizing. The hostage families represent a range of background and political viewpoints, and the forum has avoided a strong political stance.

Moshe Emilio Lavi, whose brother-in-law, Omri Miran, remains in Hamas captivity, and was at the headquarters, said he believed it was the government’s immediate goal to get the hostages released, “but it’s our responsibility to keep that in the public discourse.”

He added that “after the war, we can hold them accountable if we believe that they did not do enough to bring them home.”

Malki Shem Tov, whose 21-year-old son Omer was kidnapped from the Nova festival, said the office had become his home over the last few months. His wife, Shelly, and their other son, Amit, circled the headquarters as well.

“We are very optimistic, we believe — and hopefully it will be soon,” Mr. Shem Tov said, adding, “I want Omer back home. I want very much to hug him and that the family will be complete again.”

As time passes, some remain worried their loved ones will be left behind — but say they have to stay strong at this point.

“I think what we are doing at the moment is pushing aside the processing and healing part of it because we simply can’t afford it at the moment,” said Mr. Emilio Lavi, who added, “We are laser-focused on bringing our loved ones home.”

Israel says it dismantled a Hamas-built tunnel under a Gaza hospital.

Israel said on Wednesday that in November it had dismantled a tunnel below Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the medical facility that Israel and allies have said Hamas used as a shield for a vast underground militia complex.

The 250-meter tunnel, about 273 yards, was dismantled without damaging the hospital, the Israeli military said in a statement. The tunnel “led to a number of significant terrorist centers and was used for carrying out terrorist operations,” the military said.

The hospital was the site of an Israeli operation in November to seize control of the facility, drawing international scrutiny and condemnation. It was one of the few remaining medical facilities still operating as thousands of Gazans were killed and injured in Israel’s aerial bombardment and ground invasion. Israel said it was being used by Hamas as a military site, and to hold hostages.

Israel has long said that Hamas, which led an incursion into Israel on Oct. 7 that killed more than 1,200 people, uses hospitals and other civilian facilities to hide fighters and weapons. Hamas also maintains a vast network of underground tunnels and facilities to move freely and plan terror attacks. A Hamas-built facility under the hospital, which Israel had described as a key command post, made it a legitimate military target, Israeli officials argued.

Since its raid on the hospital, Israeli officials have presented what they say is evidence that Hamas used the hospital as a military facility, including the discovery of weapons, underground bunkers and, nearby, the body of an Israeli soldier taken hostage on Oct. 7.

Gazan health officials have denied the hospital’s use by Hamas, saying that it has only served as a medical facility. When Israeli troops raided the hospital, hundreds of patients were evacuated and thousands of Gazans, who had been displaced from their homes by Israel’s bombing campaign and had sought refuge on the hospital’s grounds, were forced to flee again.

On Tuesday, newly declassified American intelligence revealed that U.S. spy agencies believe Hamas and another Palestinian group used the hospital to command forces and hold some hostages. A senior intelligence official said American intelligence agencies obtained information that Hamas fighters had evacuated the complex days before the hospital operation, and that the assessment remains firm despite questions from some news organizations about Hamas’s presence there.

Israel has been criticized for failing to produce evidence of specific claims made in the lead-up to the raid on the hospital, including that it would discover a sophisticated underground command center and access points to the tunnel from inside the hospital’s wards. Israel did not provide evidence to back those specific claims, because, the military said, it was unable to fully excavate the tunnel because it was booby-trapped.

Images released by the Israeli military clearly show extensive tunnels, but not how they were used.

Strikes and protests in the West Bank follow al-Arouri’s killing.

Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank went on strike on Wednesday to protest the assassination of Saleh al-Arouri, a senior Hamas official, shutting down universities, banks, shops and other businesses.

Protests also continued a day after Mr. al-Arouri was killed on Tuesday in an explosion in Beirut. Mr. al-Arouri was born on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Ramallah in 1966, a year before the Six-Day War led to Israeli occupation of the territory.

Palestinians — many wearing masks and some carrying weapons — marched and chanted on Tuesday while holding Hamas flags in towns and cities including Jenin, Hebron and Ramallah, as well as Aroura, where Mr. al-Arouri was born.

Some protesters wore headbands bearing the name of the Qassam Brigades, the military branch of Hamas. Mr. al-Arouri is considered one of the founders of the branch.

In Gaza’s crowded south, each tent has ‘a story of sadness.’

Gazan describes the ‘miserable situation’ at a camp in rafah, ahmed alfarra gave a tour of the makeshift shelter, bathroom and kitchen he and his family use at a camp in rafah, in the southern gaza strip..

You can see the situation here is miserable. As you can see, thousands of tents, and the clothes is under the rain and under the weather. This is the primitive, primitive bathroom. It’s done by — by primitive materials as possible. This is the water that we are putting inside to drink and to eat. This is our kitchen. This is tea — now it’s prepared. This is the tank of foods. Unfortunately, she was under rain all the day. This is onion and some rice. And this is the kitchen tools. This miserable situation maybe is the best situation that we have in the surrounding area. I mean, that we have some food that we can take, but other tents, maybe they don’t have these facilities or these equipments.

Video player loading

As the Israeli military tells Gazans to evacuate their homes in the central part of the territory, the crowding in the southernmost part of the strip is getting worse. More than 1 million people have squeezed into Rafah, the city on Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, according to the United Nations.

Drone footage published by The Associated Press and a video sent to The New York Times by a family sheltering in Rafah showed row upon row of tents set up on the sandy ground, each one just a few feet from the next. Some looked to be sturdy tents provided by Qatar and other countries and groups that have offered aid; others were no more than tarps draped over flimsy wooden frames.

“You can see thousands,” said Ahmed Alfarra, a pediatrician at Al Nasser Hospital living with his family and his brother-in-law’s family in a pair of tents in Rafah, who sent a video showing their quarters to a reporter for The Times on Tuesday. Every tent, he added, “has a story, a story of sadness, a story of tears.”

He gestured toward a tent a few dozen yards away where smoke could be seen rising, explaining that people there were burning wood to cook. Rain had dappled the laundry hanging over the partition separating two tents, the small stove where his family was making tea and their makeshift pantry — neat little piles of cooking oil, bottled water and jarred olives on a pair of wire shelves. His sons were bundled in winter jackets against the cold.

Jerrycans of water they used for drinking sat on a plastic chair and on the ground. The toilet was in an outhouse of sorts, a spindly wooden frame covered in black plastic. Breakfast for the whole family, Mr. Alfarra said, would be two eggplants smoking over a charcoal grill, with some lemon squeezed on top.

“You can see the situation here is miserable,” he said. And yet, he added, his family — which counted itself among the elite of Gaza, with doctors, engineers, professors and college graduates — was much better off than others in Rafah: “We have some food that we can take, but other tents, maybe they don’t have these facilities.”

Grim statistics from aid groups back him up. Half of Gaza’s population of about 2.2 million is at risk of starvation, and 90 percent say they regularly go without food for a whole day, the United Nations said in a recent report .
