CPC Case studies

You need to have taken the Driver CPC theory test before you can sit your case study test.

What do you need to do?

If you want to be Driver CPC qualified for either a truck or bus you will need to have passed a case study test

The case study test describes 3 real life situations a driver might face. There will be 15 questions on each.

To pass you have to score at least 5 out of 15 in each situation and have an overall score of at least 28 out of 45.

Where do you need to go?

You can book your case study test at the  Driver Theory Test Website

Your test result

When you finish your theory test you will be given a score report. This will tell you whether you have passed or failed your test.

This information will be passed on by the Driver Theory Test Service to the RSA CPC Section.

If you have passed, you will be given a Driver CPC Case Study Test Certificate

Your case study test certificate is valid for 2 years from when you passed the test.

If you fail your case study test

You’ll get a score report with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another case study test straight away, but you can’t take it for another 3 clear working days.

Please contact us directly for more information on dates and times of case study classes.

Course Information

Since 10th September 2008 (Coaches / Minibus) and 10th September 2009 (HGV) all drivers whose main task is driving such vehicles professionally, must undertake periodic training each year to retain their CPC status. This involves attending one module (one day) each year for five years after which a driver CPC card will be issued by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). This training can only be delivered at RSA approved training centres and by RSA approved trainers. The attendance will be recorded by the training provider and uploaded to the RSA database.

Drivers who attained the relevant licence after the above dates must complete a driver CPC periodic training module within one year of their initial CPC qualification.

Initial Training

rsa cpc case study

The examination includes:

  • Two hour multiple choice theory test
  • Two hour case study theory test.
  • 90 minute driving test
  • 30 minute practical test

You can attend in RSA approved training centers to help you pass your Driver CPC examination.

Once you have completed and passed the four parts of the Driver CPC examination you can apply for a driving licence and Driver CPC card in that category.

Should you fail any part of the test you will have to re-sit that part of the test again.

Who should attend?

Drivers who wish to continue to drive HGV’s or Coaches professionally, this means that the driver is paid to drive or driving constitutes the main part of his employment.

Course Objectives:

The aim is to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving.

Periodic Training:

Drivers must complete 5 modules, one per year, consisting of 7 hours each, over 5 years.

Naas Driving Academy

What is driver cpc.

Driver CPC is a Certificate in Professional Competence for professional bus and truck drivers. Its purpose is to set and maintain high standards of safety and driving among drivers of trucks and buses.

Driver CPC was introduced in Ireland on the 10th September 2008 for bus drivers, and the 10th September 2009 for truck drivers. From these dates on, professional drivers need to take part in continuous training. If a driver has a full licence for a truck or bus before Driver CPC came into force on the 10th September 2008 for buses and the 10th September 2009 for trucks, they will automatically have Driver CPC without having to complete more exams. This is called having CPC acquired rights.

The driver’s licence should have the date of issue before the 10th September 2008 (for bus drivers), or 10th September 2009 (for truck drivers), which will be evidence of the Driver CPC acquired rights.

Periodic Training.

To keep the Driver CPC acquired rights, the driver must complete 35 hours of periodic training (seven hours per year) over five consecutive years from 2008 for buses and 2009 for trucks. A driver who has completed all of their periodic training will receive a CPC Driver Qualification card recording their Driver CPC start and expiry date, photograph and signature. If a driver is not up to date with their periodic training they should not work as a professional driver as they and their employer can be subject to a fine.

Driver CPC Modules

The seven hour per year 1 day attendance only courses are broken up into 6 modules. These modules need and can only be completed once in the 5 year cycle.

  • Control of the Vehicle,
  • Minimising Risks,
  • Health and Safety,
  • Role of the professional driver,
  • Professional Truck Driver,
  • Professional Bus Driver.

Modules 1 to 4 are to be completed by both bus and truck drivers, Module 5 is specific to truck drivers, Module 6 specific to bus drivers. If a driver has a dual licence with both truck and bus they have to complete all 6 modules in a 5 year cycle, (the final year they will need to complete two modules).

Cycle start date

The cycle start date for acquired rights drivers is 9th of September. A module should be completed before this date every year.

From 9th of September 2020 Bus Drivers with acquired rights that have been using their licence professionally should have completed 12 Modules, which are Modules 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6, completed twice and then any two of the 5 completed from their third cycle. Truck drivers should have 11 Modules, which are modules 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, completed twice and then one of the 5 modules from their third cycle.

Modules cannot be completed early, however if a driver for some reason did not complete a module they should have completed, they can sit this module so they are compliant to drive. This late completed module will appear on their portal as completed but not compliant and a reason will have to be submitted to the RSA when renewing their Driver Qualification card.

Acquired rights licence holders returning to work as a professional driver.

If a driver has acquired rights but has not been using their licence to drive professionally or if they have moved to Ireland from another EU state or ‘recognised licence exchange’ country they will need to complete the five modules for their licence (or 6 if they have a dual licence) before starting to drive professionally.

Once completed they will need to sign an affidavit in front of a commissioner of Oaths to say they have not been using the licence professionally. They will then need to continue the one days training per year to keep their cpc qualification valid. This also applies to drivers from another EU state that have received the licence after this date but have completed the CPC exams in their own EU country. Their yearly cycle start date will be shown on their CPC Driver Qualification Card.

How does Driver CPC affect drivers holding full C/D licence C/D’s before 10th Sept?

If you have a full licence for a truck or bus before Driver CPC came into force on the 10th September 2008 for buses and the 10th September 2009 for trucks, you will automatically get your Driver CPC without having to take more tests. This is called having CPC acquired rights

In order to keep your Driver CPC acquired rights, you must do 35 hours of periodic training (seven hours per year) over five consetutive years from 2008 for buses and 2009 for trucks. When you complete all of your periodic training you will get a card recording your Driver CPC, photograph and signature. If you are not up to date with your periodic training you cannot work as a professional driver. Any driver who has acquired rights and has not completed Driver CPC and wishes to start to work as a professional driver will need to complete all of the CPC Modules before starting employment.

Please see our Courses section below to book or call us on 045-879969

How does driver CPC affect new drivers?

If a driver received their full commercial licence (or is in the process of completing their full licence) after CPC came into effect or if they hold a full commercial licence from a non-EU state or non ‘recognised licence exchange’ country and want to become a professional bus driver or a professional truck driver they will have to complete Driver CPC examinations. The examination includes:

  • The Driver Theory test which now includes the multiple choice CPC test, (€72 apply on www.theorytest.ie )
  • A two hour case study theory test, (€72 apply on www.theorytest.ie )
  • A 90 minute driving test, and (€120 apply on www.rsa.ie ) (Learner permit holders only)
  • A 30 minute practical test. (€32 apply on www.rsa.ie ) (Covering the candidate’s knowledge of safety, a practical demonstration of the candidate’s knowledge of the vehicle and its components and their knowledge of documentation required to drive professionally.)

The date the driver passes the third practical part of the CPC exam process is the start date of their 5 year cycle which should be printed on their CPC card and is the date that they need to complete one module by each year. The first module being completed before the first year is finished.

When do I NOT need Driver CPC?

If you drive any of the vehicles listed below, you do not need Driver CPC. These are:

  • vehicles not allowed go more than 45 kilometres per hour;
  • vehicles used or controlled by the Defence Forces, Civil Defence, the Fire Service and forces responsible for maintaining public order;
  • vehicles undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance, or new or rebuilt vehicles which have not been put into service;
  • vehicles used in states of emergency or for rescue missions;
  • vehicles used for driving lessons for anyone who wants to get a driving licence or a CPC;
  • vehicles used for carrying passengers or goods for personal use and not for business;
  • vehicles carrying materials or equipment that the driver uses as part of their work, as long as driving the vehicle is not the driver’s main activity.

Driver CPC Initial Qualification

driver cpc courses

All potential professional drivers will need to pass Initial Qualification Tests, which will assess their knowledge and skills in the areas outlined in the Directive.

Driver CPC Theory Test – Step 1;

= Option 1;  applies for either a bus or truck theory test This test consists of 100 multiple choice questions – you must correctly answer at least 74 of them to pass either the bus or the truck exam.

= Option 2;  applies for either a bus and truck theory test This test consists of 140 multiple choice questions if you want to drive buses and trucks, you may opt to take the combined bus and truck exam. You must correctly answer at least 104 to pass this combined bus and truck exam.

Driver CPC Case Study – Step 2;

= 3 case studies are short scenarios that describe various situations a driver might face. There are 15 questions in each case study (45 in total). To pass, you must correctly answer 28 of the 45 questions – a minimum of 5 questions on each case study.

We will prepare these potential professional drivers to assist them in passing all two steps required to attain the Learner permit for C or D License.

After passing your Driver CPC Theory Test Step 1 and Step 2 and holding a driving license B you can apply for your  Learner Permit for license C or D (or both).

You now have two years the time to finish your Driver CPC Test with the flowing steps

Driver CPC Step 3

=  the standard 90-minute driving test

Driver CPC Step 4

=  a 30-minute practical test

Again we will prepare these potential professional drivers to assist them in passing the all last two steps as required to attain the full Driving license for C or D.

After you passed all the 4 Steps above and you want to maintain your Driver CPC you must then do 35 hours of periodic training over the next five years. Training is on a one-day-per-year basis (minimum of 7 hours each day). If you are maintaining both a bus and a truck CPC you must complete 42 hours training over the five year period.

These courses are for all potential professional young drivers “C license 18 Years plus and D license 21 Years plus”, these courses are also for “Back to Work Scheme” and “Career Change”

Some topics you might be interested in, give orange: sgs takes conference giveaways in a different direction.

Everyone who attends a trade show, conference, or other event typically takes something away from their experience.

As a leader in digital trust, SGS will occupy Booth 4315 at the upcoming RSA Conference24. Our experts will be available to share significant developments in AI, information, and cybersecurity.

Like most industry events, part of our planning involves providing swag for attendees as a reminder of whom they met and, hopefully, the issues discussed.

However, SGS takes sustainability very seriously. As such, we have drastically reduced our use of single-use plastics and are taking steps to positively impact both the environment and the community at large. In addition to providing the crowd-pleasing rubber duckies that have become a favorite at various events, we have developed a new initiative whereby visitors to our booth will have the opportunity to direct the use of volunteer hours by our staff.

SGS prides itself on delivering solutions. Data privacy, AI, information, and cybersecurity are key areas in which we excel, as are sustainability and community engagement.

Signing up our staff members to volunteer for two hours at a time is easy, and the choice is tailored to reflect the interests of the visitor. Whether it involves a park cleanup or assisting at a food bank, visitors need only meet with one of our team members at our booth and complete the Give Orange forms provided. Our volunteers will then follow up with the visitor on the progress and impact of their donated hours.

The Give Orange campaign was initially piloted at a similar event in Canada in March and received favorable reviews from both the "donors" and those benefiting from this initiative.

Consider something new among your takeaways from this year's RSA Conference. Come visit our booth, #4315, this May in San Francisco, or contact us now to learn more about what SGS can offer.
