Red Sox Designate Vladimir Gutierrez For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | May 1, 2024 at 5:55pm CDT

The Red Sox announced that they have signed first baseman Dominic Smith to a one-year contract. He’ll take the roster spot of outfielder/designated hitter Masataka Yoshida , who has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a left thumb sprain, retroactive to April 29. To open a 40-man spot for Smith, right-hander Vladimir Gutierrez has been designated for assignment. Prior to the official announcement, manager Álex Cora announced that Yoshida was heading to the IL on Jones & Mego. Hat tip to Rob Bradford of WEEI . The Sox adding Smith was reported on earlier today.

Yoshida, 30, has hit .275/.348/.388 so far this year. That’s fairly comparable to last year’s production, when he hit .289/.338/.445 in his first season after coming over from Japan. He departed Sunday’s game after jamming his hand during an at-bat, per Christopher Smith of MassLive . Smith relayed yesterday that Yoshida would be getting an MRI, which seems to have revealed this injury.

Though the Sox won’t be happy to lose Yoshida’s bat, his absence will give them a bit of lineup flexibility. He has primarily been serving as the designated hitter this year, with just one inning in left field. They can now use that DH spot to rotate various players through based on health and matchups.

With Triston Casas on the injured list and unlikely to return any time soon, the Sox have been looking outside the organization for help at first base. They acquired Garrett Cooper from the Cubs but he himself is banged up after getting hit by a pitch last night on his arm last night. Chris Cotillo of MassLive relayed that Cooper is just bruised and is going to be okay but it’s possible he may need a day or two to rest up.

With Smith now on the roster, he can perhaps cover for Cooper as he is on the mend. With Yoshida out, the Sox could have both Smith and Cooper in the lineup via the DH slot, if they so choose. Both players have a bit of outfield experience but neither of them are considered strong defenders on the grass.

To get Smith onto the roster, the Sox have cut Gutierrez. The 28-year-old was acquired from the Brewers in a cash deal a couple of weeks ago. The Red Sox have kept him down in Triple-A on optional assignment since then, where he has pitched six innings over three appearances, allowing four earned runs while striking out seven but walking eight.

The Sox will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. He’s been bouncing around the league quite a bit this year. He signed a minor league deal with the Marlins in February and was selected to their roster in the first few days of the season. He was designated for assignment and went to the Brewers on a waiver claim, before being DFA’d again and getting flipped to the Red Sox. That makes today his third DFA in roughly a month.

The Cuban righty joined affiliated ball by signing with the Reds as a 21-year-old, earning a bonus of $4.75MM. He made his major league debut in 2021 with 114 innings over 22 starts, posting a 4.74 earned run average that year while striking out just 17.7% of batters faced. He struggled in 2022 before requiring Tommy John surgery in June of that year, wiping out the remainder of that season and most of his 2023. The Reds outrighted him off their roster at the end of last year, which led to his minor league deal with Miami.

For a second there, I thought the Red Sox had traded for Vladimir Guerrero and immediately designated him for assignment.

' src=

And I thought they DFA’d Franklin Guttierez which seemed odd since I haven’t heard his name since 2017, but Sox roster is full of surprises these days.

dirty – And I thought they DFA’d Jackie Gutierrez to make room for Rey Quinones.

Fever – what they *did* actually do was outright Joely to the woosox.

I was hoping he was finally gone…

' src=

Dom Smith doesn’t get hurt tonight, knock on wood!

' src=

They gave Gutierrez a shot and he wasn’t good in AAA.

' src=

Yoshida is quite the disappointment. He’s terrible defensively and is somehow a super slow/terrible baserunner with his frame. DH only bat that has well below average avg exit velo, barrel %, and hard hit rate? How is that worth 5/90?

' src=

Yoshi, Dice-K, Rusney. Maybe the Sox should avoid international waters.

I wouldn’t go that far. I mean you win some and lose some. Okajima, Uehara, Tazawa, Bogaerts, Devers.

Yoshi is just such a weird signing. Signing a literal 1 tool player from another league to a five year deal?

' src=

And Dice-K wasn’t terrible. He got us 2007.

' src=

Throttle time…

' src=

Yankees will pick him up then dfa him later

$17.5 million for 107 OPS+ and horrible defense. What a predictably horrible signing Yoshida was.

Everyone talks about how bad Yoshida’s defense is, but he can’t be worse than Manny was, can he? It seems to me with a decent CF, there’s no reason Yoshida can’t play left.

' src=

Manny made up for his defense with excellent arm strenght… and obviously offense.

They won’t be happy to lose his bat? They never play him

Red Sox release Jackie Bradley Jr.

By WBZ-News Staff

Updated on: August 4, 2022 / 2:13 PM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON -- After acquiring Eric Hosmer at the trade deadline, the Red Sox needed to make room on the roster. Jackie Bradley Jr. is the odd man out.

The Red Sox announced Thursday afternoon that Bradley has been released. Earlier in the day, The Boston Globe reported that Bradley had been designated for assignment.

The 32-year-old Bradley rejoined the Red Sox this past offseason in a trade that also brought two prospects (Alex Binelas, David Hamilton) to the Red Sox, with Hunter Renfroe giong out to Milwaukee.

While Bradley's outfield defense remained steady, he's struggled offensively, hitting .210 with a .578 OPS. That's a tick better, actually, than his numbers last year, when he batted .163 with a .497 OPS for the Brewers. But it's well off the .247 average and .769 OPS he posted from 2015-20 with the Red Sox.

Bradley was originally a first-round pick of the Red Sox back in 2011 out of the University of South Carolina. He made his MLB debut in 2013, but was not on the active postseason roster when the team won the World Series. He did win the World Series with the Red Sox in 2018, earning ALCS MVP honors along the way for his performance vs. the Astros. He signed with the Brewers as a free agent last year before returning a year later via trade.

Alex Cora Explains Why Red Sox Designated Joely Rodríguez For Assignment

Rodríguez struggled again this season.

It was surprising when Joely Rodríguez earned a spot in the Boston Red Sox bullpen over Brennan Bernardino out of spring training.

But a month into the season, Rodríguez doesn’t have that spot anymore.

The Red Sox announced Sunday they designated the struggling left-handed relief pitcher for assignment and recalled right-handed relief pitcher Naoyuki Uwasawa from Triple-A Worcester to take Rodríguez’s place on the active roster.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed the reasoning for the move prior to the series finale against the Chicago Cubs at Fenway Park.

Story continues below advertisement

“Strike throwing, the stuff looked down and we needed help here,” Cora told reporters , per the Boston Herald’s Mac Cerullo. “We’ve got two lefties that are throwing the ball well, and like I said in Seattle, Bernie was sent down, was it the right move? It is what it is. Joely has been a big leaguer throughout his career, he’s been good at what he does and it just didn’t happen.”

Cora added: “I believe there’s something there still, but for us right now, this is what we have to do.”

Rodríguez made 11 appearances out of the ‘pen this season, posting a 6.55 ERA. He registered the exact same ERA in as many appearances last season with the Red Sox, too.

Rodríguez’s outing Friday against the Cubs appeared to be the last straw for him. He surrendered three runs on three hits in an inning of work.

With the Red Sox moving on from Rodríguez, Bernardino and Cam Booser are the only lefties in Boston’s bullpen.

Red Sox designate infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment

T he Red Sox officially added first baseman Garrett Cooper to their active roster, and to make room, they have designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment.

The Sox acquired Reyes from the Athletics during the 2023 season for cash. He played a solid backup role last year, batting .287 in 64 games while showing the ability to move around the infield.

Yet Reyes has failed to make much noise to start this year, batting just .183 in 21 games. He became somewhat of a liability defensively, too, committing four errors.

Pablo Reyes has batted just .183 this season, and has committed four errors in 21 games.

With Trevor Story back, Red Sox designate Yu Chang for assignment

BOSTON — With Trevor Story set to make his season debut at shortstop Tuesday night , the Red Sox cleared a roster spot by designating Yu Chang for assignment.

Chang, the interim starting shortstop in recent weeks, had a bigger role than anticipated for the first four months of the season but did not hit enough to keep his roster spot with Story healthy . Despite being a strong defender (+1 DRS) and showing some power (6 homers), Chang hit just .162 with a .552 OPS in 39 games (including 32 starts). He struck out 34 times in 112 plate appearances (30.4%). Before Tuesday’s matchup with the Royals, the Sox officially reinstated Story from the 60-day injured list and cut Chang to clear a 40-man roster spot. Story missed the first 112 games of the season after undergoing offseason elbow surgery.

Instead of keeping Chang, the Red Sox opted to keep Monday hero Pablo Reyes on their roster. For now, Reyes will back up Story at shortstop (and play a lot in the coming days as Story gets re-acclimated) while getting starts at second against left-handed pitchers in a timeshare with newcomer Luis Urías. Justin Turner will also mix in at second base on days when Cora wants his best offense on the field.

Cora said the decision to cut ties with Chang was made before Reyes went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk-off grand slam Monday night.

“It’s where we’re at roster-wise,” Cora said. “We have to make a move. With Luis and Pablo, we feel comfortable and this is the route we have to go.”

After playing 11 games late last season with the Red Sox after they claimed him on waivers, Chang was non-tendered in November but re-signed with the club on a one-year, $800,000 deal during spring training. Originally a depth add to a middle infield mix that was expected to include Kiké Hernández and Christian Arroyo as starters and Adalberto Mondesí as a utility man, Chang made the Opening Day roster as a backup. By late April, with Hernández’s throwing woes persisting, Chang assumed the starting shortstop role for about 10 days before fracturing his hamate bone on a swing in Baltimore on April 24 . He returned on July 7 and has started 19 games at shortstop in the last month, providing sure-handed defense but not much in the way of offense (.180 average in 65 plate appearances).

“He was here to play defense and he played great defense for us,” Cora said. “Offensively, he is who he is. There’s a few things he needs to keep working (on). Pitch recognition and swinging at the right ones. He shows flashes of power and he put good at-bats with men in scoring position and all that stuff. There’s still growing in his game.”

Story will be the seventh different Red Sox player to start at shortstop this season, joining Hernández (54 starts), Chang (30), Reyes (15), David Hamilton (10), Arroyo (2) and Bobby Dalbec (1). Cora believes the former All-Star will bring much-needed stability to the spot.

“If you look at our roster, it’s a different one than early on,” Cora said. “It doesn’t happen often but there’s certain guys that didn’t play well at their positions. Then certain guys played well. We knew Trevor was gonna be part of this at one point. It just happened that we had to make adjustments throughout the process. In a perfect world, it was Kiké and that was it until Trevor came here. But it didn’t work that way.”

Cora believes Chang, who will be exposed to waivers in the coming days, will draw interest from other clubs.

“The front office did an outstanding job in the offseason saying Chang is a big part of what we’re trying to accomplish,” the manager said. “We didn’t see him that often here. He didn’t play that much. He had been with four teams in one year. They always talked about the potential of him being an impactful guy defensively. And he did. Now, we’ve got Trevor. Hopefully, now we can slow it down, he’ll be the guy and we’ll make adjustments at second.

“(Chang)’s a good defender and teams like that. We’ll see how it goes.”

Boston Red Sox | Red Sox notes: Hirokazu Sawamura, Austin Davis designated for assignment in bullpen shakeup

Sox ‘pen has mlb-worst 5.95 era since the trade deadline.

BOSTON MA - July 6: Hirokazu Sawamura #18 of the Boston Red Sox reacts to walking a player during the sixth inning of the MLB game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park on July 6, 2022 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Staff Photo By Matt Stone/MediaNews Group/Boston Herald)

Stuck behind four teams with seven games separating them from an American League Wild Card berth, the Red Sox axed two veteran relievers in favor of a pair of minor league journeymen.

Right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura and lefty Austin Davis were designated for assignment in preparation of the Red Sox’ series against the Minnesota Twins, paving the way for righties Kaleb Ort and Zack Kelly to get promoted from Triple-A Worcester.

Sawamura looked like a nifty signing from Japan prior to last season, and put up a respectable 3.06 ERA in 2021, although with a concerning 1.45 WHIP and legitimate command issues. He’s been worse this year and, given the Sox are unlikely to pick up his $3 million option for next season, the DFA was more than reasonable.

Davis was acquired from the Pirates for Michael Chavis at last year’s trade deadline, when the Sox picked up a pair of relievers in Davis and Hansel Robles in addition to outfielder/first baseman Kyle Schwarber.

This year, though, the Sox subtracted one from their relief core while trading Jake Diekman to the White Sox and ignored their bullpen needs altogether, with chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom offering an unsatisfactory explanation.

“We pursued a lot of different options,” Bloom said after the deadline. “And that’s not to say we don’t have faith in and see upside in the guys that are here… and some guys who are in Triple-A as well. We do think we have talent here to have more consistent results in the pen than we’ve had, and we are hopeful that we’ll be able to do that.”

Since then, the Sox bullpen has an MLB-worst 5.95 ERA.

With Diekman out of the picture and the struggling Darwinzon Hernandez quickly sent back to Worcester, Davis became the only lefty available for manager Alex Cora, who gave him chance after chance, though Davis has been consistently poor since the start of July (9.00 ERA).

Ort hasn’t been any better (9.00 ERA in 15 innings). Kelly, 27, has a 2.72 ERA in Worcester but has never pitched in the big leagues before.

No sign of Casas

The moves are fairly simple in that neither Sawamura nor Davis were performing of late, with both contributing to reliable bullpen meltdowns in recent weeks.

However, one would think the sixth-worst team in the A.L. should be able to safely shift their focus to the future at this point in the season, but have chosen to keep first base prospect Triston Casas in Worcester for at least another series.

Casas homered and was on base twice for the Woo Sox on Sunday. He’s now reached base multiple times in nine of his last 11 games, hitting .385 with a .529 on-base percentage in that stretch.

The organization’s top prospect entering the year, Casas seems primed for a big league opportunity at some point. With rosters expanding on Thursday, it could spark the first chance for Casas when the Red Sox return home for a four-game set vs. the Rangers.

For now, they’ll keep rolling with Franchy Cordero, Bobby Dalbec and Christian Arroyo, who was in the lineup at first base on Monday.

Mata promoted

Down in Worcester, the WooSox continue to field an interesting roster.

Monday, the Red Sox promoted one of their top pitching prospects, Bryan Mata, from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Worcester.

FORT MYERS , FL. - FEBRUARY 27: Bryan Mata #90 of the Boston Red Sox pitches in the first inning during a spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies at JetBlue Park on February 27, 2020 in Fort Myers , Florida. (Staff Photo By Matt Stone/MediaNews Group/Boston Herald)

Mata will make his Triple-A debut against the Buffalo Bisons (Blue Jays affiliate) on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at Polar Park (televised live on NESN Plus).

Mata has had an unconventional path. After the COVID-canceled minor league season in 2020, Mata suffered an elbow injury in spring training 2021 and missed all of that year recovering from Tommy John surgery.

But the 23-year-old right-hander is returned to action this June and has impressed, with a 1.85 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings over 10 games with Portland.

Red Sox designate RHP Matt Barnes for assignment

The Boston Red Sox made a surprising move to clear space on their roster on Tuesday.

Veteran reliever Matt Barnes was designated for assignment to make room for newly-acquired outfielder Adam Duvall, the team announced. Boston will still need to pay his $7.5 million salary for 2023.

Tomase: Can Bryan Mata make a legitimate impact for Red Sox in 2023?

The Red Sox originally drafted Barnes in the first round (19th overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft. The UConn product debuted with the big-league club in 2014 and was a key contributor out of the bullpen for the next nine seasons.

Barnes, 32, helped Boston to a World Series title in 2018. He signed a two-year, $18.75 million contract extension shortly before playing in his first All-Star Game in 2021.

In nine years with the Red Sox, Barnes amassed a 4.07 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 556 strikeouts and 200 walks in 431.2 innings (429 appearances).

Red Sox DFA Veteran To Make Room On Roster For Newly-Acquired All-Star

Boston just got a boost for the lineup after making an intriguing trade

  • Author: Patrick McAvoy

In this story:

The Boston Red Sox have a new first baseman in town.

Boston recently acquired one-time All-Star Garrett Cooper in a trade with the Chicago Cubs to fill in for Triston Casas while he is sidelined. Casas will be away from the team until at least the summer and Cooper is expected to see most of the time at first base now.

To make room on the roster for Cooper, Boston designated veteran utility man Pablo Reyes for assignment, according to WEEI's Rob Bradford.

"The Red Sox today added (first baseman/outfielder) Garrett Cooper to the active Major League roster," Bradford said. "To make room, Boston designated (infielder/outfielder) Pablo Reyes for assignment."

Reyes joined the Red Sox last season and was great. He appeared in 64 games with Boston at the big league level and slashed .287/.339/.377 with two home runs, nine doubles, 20 RBIs, and seven stolen bases. Reyes helped out all over the diamond and saw time at first base, second base, shortstop, third base, designated hitter, and even pitcher.

He played all over the field with Boston this season too, but hasn't been as successful this season and slashed .183/.234/.217 in 21 games before being designated for assignment.

Cooper should be a major lift for the Red Sox and was slashing .270/.341/.432 with Chicago before being traded to Boston to go along with one home run and six RBIs. Hopefully, Casas won't be away from the team for too long, but Cooper will help in the meantime.

Red Sox designate Zack Littell for assignment

red sox designated for assignment

The Red Sox have designated right-hander Zack Littell for assignment, the club announced prior to Wednesday’s series finale against the Braves .

Littell, 27, was acquired from the Rangers in exchange for cash considerations on Friday and was added to the major-league roster the following afternoon. He appeared in two games for the Red Sox, allowing three earned runs on three hits and three walks to go along with two strikeouts over three innings of work.

After yielding two runs in the eighth inning of 6-1 loss to the Phillies on Sunday, Littell gave up one run on one hit, two walks, and two strikeouts in the final two innings of a 9-3 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night.

Littell is out of minor-league options, so the Red Sox had no choice but to designate the righty for assignment and expose him to waivers. They will have the next seven days to either trade, release, or pass Littell through waivers if he goes unclaimed. In that scenario, though, Littell would have the ability to reject an assignment to the minor-leagues in favor of free agency since he has previously been outrighted.

As noted by MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, though, Littell may elect to stick with the Red Sox as a non-40-man roster player since they were the only organization willing to give him a guaranteed major-league roster spot. Prior to Friday’s trade, Littell had opened the 2023 season with Texas’ Triple-A affiliate, posting a 2.25 ERA with 16 strikeouts to two walks in eight relief appearances (12 innings) for the Round Rock Express.

By designating Littell for assignment, Boston reduced the size of its 40-man roster from 40 to 39 players. The Red Sox removed Littell from their 26-man roster in order to activate left-hander James Paxton from the 15-day injured list.

Paxton, who began the season on the injured list due to a left hamstring strain, will make his Red Sox debut in Friday’s series opener against the Cardinals at Fenway Park.

Garrett Cooper grimaced in pain after his was hit by a pitch on the wrist during the fifth inning.

The Red Sox hoped they had found their temporary first baseman in Garrett Cooper , who was acquired from Cubs on Sunday for cash considerations. But in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over the Giants, Cooper was hit on the right wrist by a pitch from reliever Sean Hjelle and exited the game with a contusion.

After the game, manager Alex Cora said that Cooper, who had struck out in his first two at-bats as a member of the Red Sox, was OK. “We dodged a bullet,” said Cora.

Cooper was recently designated for assignment, and the Red Sox, in need of a first baseman with the absence of Triston Casas (rib cartilage), thought Cooper would be a good fit.

Cooper had a conversation with Cora to discuss the righthanded hitter’s role.

“He said I’m going to play a lot,” Cooper said prior to the game. “I don’t want to get too advanced into talking about everything, but he kept it light.”

Cooper should enjoy Fenway, considering he’s a righty with some pop (17 home runs last season for the Marlins and Padres). At the time he was designated for assignment by the Cubs, Cooper was hitting a respectable .270/.341/.432 with a homer.

Cooper said he feels good about where his swing is, in part because he began working with a new hitting coach in the offseason.

“I felt like I started the year off well, and I hit well in the spring,” said Cooper. “I would be accountable, sending him video after every game just to make sure, you know, [I was doing] the things we worked on in the offseason: posture, hands. Just everything that where I may have had a lot of up and down last year, you know, we kind of hopefully clean those things up.”

Yoshida needs imaging

Masataka Yoshida will undergo imaging on his swollen left hand on Wednesday, according to Cora.

Yoshida hurt the hand when he got jammed on a pitch during Sunday night’s win over the Cubs.

The Sox had relegated Yoshida to a full-time DH role against righthanded pitchers. Yoshida got off to a slow start, but recently upped his numbers to .275/.348/.388 with two homers. Cora is unsure if Yoshida’s injury will require a trip to the injured list.

The Red Sox initially planned on reinstating Vaughn Grissom from the IL for Tuesday’s game, but they said the second baseman is under the weather.

“I talked to him today,” said Cora. “He doesn’t look great or feel great. So we’ve just got to be patient now and see where he is in a few days.”

Reyes odd man out

The Red Sox designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment on Monday. Reyes hit a forgettable .183/.234/.217 in 64 plate appearances this season. Despite those numbers, Cora said Reyes’s lackluster defense was what stood out.

“I think this year he never got on track, especially defensively,” said Cora. “He made some errors and all that. Offensively, you can see his swing. He controlled the strike zone. He didn’t get hits, but the at-bats were good. I think defensively, not that we were disappointed, you know, they’re going to make errors, but he never got on track.”

The Sox acquired Reyes from the Athletics last year for cash considerations, and he provided a spark plug, batting .287 in 64 games while showing the ability to play multiple infield positions.

“We got good players,” said Cora. “It was getting to a point where you have to make decisions. You’ve got to manage the game, too. So it’s one of those things like he never took off this year, let’s put it that way. But he’s still a good player. Won’t be surprised when somebody claims him or does something with him because he’s versatile. He can hit lefties. But where we are roster-wise, it’s going to get tougher. There’s going to be more tougher decisions in the coming days, coming months, and that’s a good thing.”

Pivetta rehab start

Nick Pivetta (elbow) will pitch Thursday for Triple A Worcester in what will likely be his only rehab start before rejoining the parent club. Garrett Whitlock (oblique) is throwing but not progressing at the rate the Red Sox expected as he’s still dealing with pain . . . The Red Sox acquired lefthander Bailey Horn from the White Sox for cash considerations and optioned him to Worcester.

Red Sox acquire former Tigers utility infielder in trade with Mets

Zack Short is headed to Beantown.

The Boston Red Sox acquired the former Detroit Tigers infielder from the New York Mets for cash considerations on Wednesday, just a few short days after Short was designated for assignment by the Mets.

It’s already the fourth trade that Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has completed since the start of the 2024 season, as Wednesday’s deal means Boston’s 40-man roster is full.

Short, who turns 29 this month, was claimed off waivers by the Mets last November when the Tigers dropped him from the roster following the 2023 season.

The Kingston, NY, native played parts of three seasons with Detroit after originally being acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a trade that included outfielder Cameron Maybin in 2020. He last served as the Tigers’ utility infielder for most of the 2023 season.

Short played 179 games with the Tigers, hitting .204 with and 13 home runs across 450 plate appearances, as well as 196 games with Triple-A Toledo. A 17th round pick by the Cubs in the 2016 MLB Draft, Short also pitched six innings in lopsided games last season, allowing four runs on 12 hits.

Short made the Mets’ Opening Day roster after a stellar spring, hitting .308 with a home run and four doubles, while walking seven times and striking out six. He’d beat out a handful of candidates for the Mets’ roster, including former Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias.

But after playing in only a handful of games and going 1-for-9, Short was designated for assignment to make room for former Tigers slugger J.D. Martinez after he completed a tune-up in Triple-A.

And now out of options, Short will be on Boston’s roster for the foreseeable future, especially considering the Red Sox’s slew of injuries on the infield. Starting shortstop Trevor Story is out for the season with a shoulder injury, while third baseman Rafael Devers is dealing with ongoing injury issues.

That means Short will be utilized in a periodic role along Boston’s infield, as he has experience playing second base, shortstop and third base.

Short, who played college baseball at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, will still be close to home, too –– just over 150 miles away from his former school.
