26 Fun Second Grade Reading Comprehension Activities

Help your students dig deeper into texts.

Movie poster book report example and pumpkin book character costume example

Second graders are some of the most enthusiastic readers out there. They are transitioning from the basics into readers looking for meaning. As they build upon their comprehension skills, they are beginning to make connections to themselves and the world at large. These second grade reading comprehension activities will help your students dig deeper into texts on their own as well as with their peers.

1. Build a pyramid

Printout of reading comprehension activity using plastic cups with symbols on them

This idea was born out of one teacher’s students’ eternal love for constructing cup towers at any opportunity! The cups are coded with symbols to represent different story elements. After reading their leveled text, students share each story element while building their cup pyramid from the bottom up. They can then record the story elements on the matching graphic organizer.

2. Clip together a reading strategy fan

Reading strategy cards joined together to form a fan (second grade reading comprehension activities)

Modeling is the best way to guide students through reading comprehension strategies. But unless they’re actively participating in the process, they simply won’t retain enough of the strategy to make any meaningful difference in their own independent comprehension of text. That’s where these strategy fans come in. The link below shows how this teacher uses the cards in her class.

3. Use a volcano graphic organizer

Drawing of a volcano divided into three parts for students to record their thoughts on reading a book beginning, middle and end(second grade reading comprehension activities)

Demonstrate how to draw a simple volcano shape, divided into three sections, and have students draw one in their reading journal. After reading the first few pages of the story, ask students to write first impressions at the base of the volcano. This is also a good place to make predictions about where they think the story is going. At about the halfway point, have students write what they think and how they think the story is changing. Once they have finished reading, they will write what they think the story is really trying to teach them and what they took away from the story at the top of the volcano.

4. Compare characters

Reading comprehension worksheet for 2nd graders to compare characters in a story (second grade reading comprehension activities)

Encourage your students to think more deeply about the characters in a story. In the head of each figure, ask students to write a character’s name. Then have them write specific attributes about the character in the torso section. In the circle between the characters, have them write shared characteristics between the two figures.

5. Construct a comprehension cootie catcher

Once the bane of classroom teachers, cootie catchers have become a novel way to practice skills that kids can get excited about. This free download from the Classroom Game Nook includes three versions with questions about characters, setting, plot, and more.

6. Put on a retelling glove

Retelling glove -- second grade reading comprehension activities

Retelling is a vital skill for young readers to work on to help them understand what they are reading. These gloves are a snappy accessory with labels that you can easily change. For fiction retellings, you can include setting, characters, problem, events, and solution. For nonfiction retellings, you can include main idea and supporting details. At the bottom of the glove, you can focus on making connections.

13. Celebrate the joy of reading with Flashlight Fridays

14. Implement Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures

Kagan balanced literacy 2 resource book(second grade reading comprehension activities)

When it comes to cooperative learning and active engagement, Dr. Spencer and Laurie Kagan are the ultimate masters. My personal favorite Kagan strategy is called “Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up.” Using this strategy, students are out of their seats and mix around the room. When they are signaled to stop, they find their nearest peer, partner up, and discuss whatever topic you choose.

15. Play Fan-n-Pick

Kagan illustration of the fan n pick game for second grade reading comprehension activities ideas.

This is another Kagan strategy to use for second grade reading comprehension activities. Group students into teams of four, assigning each student a different role, which rotates each round. Students answer questions from a deck of index cards with questions relating to a text. The student roles are: Student 1 fans the cards; student 2 picks and reads a card; student 3 answers the question; and student 4 paraphrases and praises the answer. Make one set with generic story element questions for fiction, and another with informational text–type questions. Then you can use them over and over for anything you are reading!

16. Use digital workspaces to show off what was learned

Collage of student working in a digital workspace and a sample digital workspace on emperor penguins(second grade reading comprehension activities)

Go a step further from written reports by using digital workspaces in your classroom. Use them for fiction book reports by labeling a slide for each story element (setting, characters, problem, solution, and plot) then have students fill in as they go. See how I used PebbleGo Create with my second graders to make visual interpretations of our nonfiction animal reports.

18. Design a timeline

Time line book report idea using Matilda as the example (second grade reading comprehension activities)

This can be done in a number of ways. One way is to provide students with strips containing different story events and they can manipulate them to put them in order. An even more fun and creative idea? Have students fold a large piece of construction paper into six or eight squares. Each square can then be filled with a story event and accompanying picture. Dig even deeper by choosing one character from a story and making a timeline of his or her life.

19. Dress up a pumpkin as your favorite book character

Pumpkin dressed up as a character from A Bad Case of Stripes with the picture book of the same title next to it (second grade reading comprehension activities)

This is the perfect fall book report project. Students fill in candy-shaped pages with different story element prompts. Have kids cut them out and place them in a bag designed with scenes from the story. Then use a pumpkin (real or fake) and dress it up as a character from the book. This can be tailored to other seasonal ideas, such as a bouquet of flowers in spring or a watermelon in the summer.

Maybe they’d even like to act like and talk in the voice of their character. Be sure to set aside time for each student to tell their classmates about the character they chose and why.

Reading Activities and Teaching Resources for 2nd Grade

Are your second graders happy, or are they ecstatic? Are they lively or bouncing off the walls? Loud or ear-splitting? Shades of meaning can make all the difference!

Most second graders will have developed enough independent reading skills that they can begin to consume and comprehend more complex texts spanning a variety of genres. Decoding skills have developed to include complex spelling-sound correspondences and two-syllable words, while oral reading begins to include purposeful inflection and cadence. Students can craft compound sentences, use commas, and infer the meaning of unknown words.

For a more comprehensive look at eSpark's standards-aligned second grade reading teaching resources, check out the breakdown of covered domains and the skills students will be working on here:

Grade 2 Reading and Language Arts

Grade 2 language arts topics.

Reading skills grade 2 students learn include:

Phonics – Identifying sounds associated with consonant diagraphs, vowel diagraphs, diphthongs and r-controlled vowels. Using context clues to develop strategies to identify tricky words. Sight Words – Recognizing and completing sentences using Grade 2 level sight words such as ‘always’, ‘around’, ‘because’, ‘would’, ‘right’ and ‘before’.

Vocabulary & Spelling – Building grade 2 vocabulary by relating words to their synonyms and selecting words to complete sentences. Using prefixes, suffixes, synonyms, antonyms and homophones correctly in sentences.

Reading Comprehension – students expand prior comprehension concepts to 2nd grade level texts and read significantly longer texts, ranging up to 500 words, with less support from images.  Sentences lengthen and are organized into paragraphs, though paragraphs are still kept short and simple.  Sentence structures become more complex and there maybe extensive dialogue and multiple characters and points of view. Grade 2 kids may begin reading chapter books.

Grammar and Writing - Emphasis on the writing of proper sentences, with capitalization and end punctuation, and the identification of parts of speech, particularly verbs and nouns.  Use of collective nouns and pronouns.  Singular, plural and irregular nouns and simple past, present and future verb tenses.

Want to see how Tennessee measures third grade reading? Try a TCAP practice test

proofreading activities for grade 2

The standardized Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program tests, also known as TNReady or TCAPs, kick off this week statewide.

Last year's rollout of a controversial third grade reading and retention law placed the TCAP under intense scrutiny. As the law took effect in 2023, the sole measurement of reading proficiency was each third grader's score on the English language arts section of the TCAP. But experts, teachers and education leaders argue it's not a reading proficiency test but rather a test of reading comprehension.

State lawmakers added a provision to the reading law to allow universal reading screening assessments to be considered in decisions on holding children back or not.

So what exactly does the English language arts section of the TCAP entail for third graders? A practice test, available online through the Tennessee Department of Education offers some insight.

Want to try your hand at one? Here's a look at what was on the spring 2023 English language arts section of the TCAP for third graders.

(Quick note: We've adapted the format of the practice test so it fits better here. None of the reading materials, questions or multiple choice answers have been changed.)

Part 1: Rory's funny story

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

"Rory's Funny Story" by Janice Graham

1 Everybody in Rory’s class had a Funny-but-True story to tell. The teacher, Mrs. Evans, had the best Funny-but- True stories of all. On Monday she told about her cat playing the piano. On Tuesday she told how she found a nibbled-on piece of bologna in the toe of her red high-heeled shoe. On Wednesday she told about a mysterious truck dumping a mountain of rocks in her driveway. The neighborhood kids climbed and played on it until the truck came back to move the mountain to the right address.

2 Mrs. Evans had a million funny stories. But Rory couldn’t think of even one to tell.

3 “It’s time again for our Funny-but-True stories,” announced Mrs. Evans on Thursday. “Who has one today?”

4 Rory slumped in his chair.

5 “I have a Funny-but-True!” cried Dana, waving wildly. “My big sister lost her new diamond engagement ring. She was really worried. My mom looked in all the places my sister had been. And there it was in a basket of laundry, sparkling in the dirty socks!”

6 The class smiled, and some people chuckled. Rory leaned forward and plopped his chin on his desk. Nothing funny ever happened to him.

7 Friday’s Funny-but-True was the best one yet. Tad told how his sister had found a hairy black tarantula the size of her hand in the bathroom medicine chest. After she was through screaming her head off, she decided to keep the spider for a pet. Rory sighed. The class would laugh about that one all through lunch recess. Somewhere in his life there had to be one Funny-but-True story. But Rory knew his weekend would be just the same old boring thing.

8 Rory’s dad promised they would try out the new dome tent in the backyard Friday night. “Just my luck,” thought Rory when a lightning storm blew up. He shuffled into the house to find his dad had turned it into a campground. The new tent filled up the living room like a big blue elephant. “What next?” thought Rory.

9 On Saturday, Rory’s four-year-old sister decided to see if her baby bunny could swim. Just in time Rory saved the soggy bunny from a bucket of water. While Mom gently blow-dried the little rabbit, he explained to his sister that bunnies can’t swim. “Silly kid,” thought Rory.

10 On Sunday Rory and his family piled into the car and headed for Grandma’s house. Passing drivers stared and pointed. When they got there, Rory discovered that their cat, Tiger, had ridden to Grandma’s on the roof of the car. “Dumb cat,” thought Rory.

11 “Time for Funny-but-Trues!” said Mrs. Evans on Monday. Rory looked around the room. He was sure Dana or Tad had another great story, but nobody spoke up.

12 “Rory, how about you?” asked Mrs. Evans.

13 Rory shook his head. “Nothing funny ever happens to me.”

14 “Oh, I bet funny things happen all the time,” said Mrs. Evans.

15 “Tell us about your weekend.”

16 Rory told about sleeping in a tent in the living room. The class looked surprised. He saw a few smiles. Next he told about the bunny’s swimming lessons. A few people giggled. When he told about Tiger riding on the roof of the car all the way to Grandma’s house, the class broke into roars of laughter.

17 Rory tried, but he couldn’t stop laughing either.

Part 2: Tatenda teaches his town

"Tatenda Teaches His Town" by Cecil Dzwowa

1 Like many families in Sanyati, a small countryside town in western Zimbabwe¹, Tatenda’s family does not have a television. One day after school, Tatenda arrived home tired and decided to rest on the sofa. But just before he sat down, he noticed something unusual in the house. “At first, I thought Dad had bought a television set, but when my mother said it was a computer, I was disappointed.”

2 It’s not that Tatenda didn’t like computers; he just didn’t know how to use them.

3 For almost two weeks, the gift lay idle in the house. Tatenda and his father didn’t even know how to turn it on. “Nobody in our neighborhood knew how to operate a computer,” Tatenda said.

4 But things changed when Amina, a young family friend, came from Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city, to visit. Amina knew all about computers and was a good teacher, too.

¹Zimbabwe: a country in Africa

Pressing the Wrong Buttons

5 At first, Tatenda and Amina were frustrated as Tatenda struggled to learn. “I was always pressing the wrong buttons,” Tatenda remembered. “But I kept on going because I was eager to learn.” Amina realized then that she could not keep Tatenda away from the computer. After three weeks, Tatenda mastered some computer basics, such as opening and closing files. But he was taking a long time to learn.

6 Tatenda kept on practicing after Amina left. His speed slowly improved. By the time Amina returned, Tatenda felt comfortable with the computer.

7 Meanwhile, Tatenda’s friends wondered what had happened to him. Tatenda had not told them about his new gadget. He no longer played soccer after school like he used to. “Even if he came, he did not spend much time with us. He always had an excuse for going back home,” his friend Saidi said.

8 Tatenda’s friends worried. Were Tatenda’s parents preventing him from playing with them? Did one of them do something wrong? Did Tatenda have new friends?

9 One day, Saidi, along with two other friends, Themba and Solomon, surprised Tatenda at home. When they arrived, Tatenda was so busy on the computer that he did not hear them. His mother opened the door and let his friends inside. They couldn’t believe what they saw — a computer and Tatenda operating it.

10 “It was too late,” Tatenda recalled. “My secret was out.”

Master of the Keys

11 But it was a new beginning for the three friends. After that surprise visit, they came to see Tatenda work on the computer. Then Tatenda let them press a button or two and shake the mouse for fun. Slowly, he taught them how to use the computer. Saidi took about three months to learn the basics; Themba, about four months; and Solomon, a year.

12 It wasn’t long before the neighborhood kids wanted to learn, too! “There were so many kids coming to see him that we had to move the computer out of his room into a bigger room,” his mother said.

13 And even more kids came. Tatenda worried. The computer began to experience problems because the kids were pressing too many buttons. So he came up with a plan. He began charging for lessons. But this did not stop more kids from coming. Those whose parents did not have money paid with chickens or goats.

14 Tatenda has taught computer skills to 30 students from his local school, and the number continues to grow. There are 600 students there and no computer. Two of the teachers at his school are also his students. “He is a bright kid and a good teacher,” said Mrs. Magumise, one of Tatenda’s schoolteachers.

15 With the money earned from teaching, Tatenda has bought a television and radio for his family. And he plans to buy a new computer. He also plans to keep on teaching. The people of Sanyati couldn’t be more pleased. Tatenda has single-handedly introduced computers to his town and is simply known there as “Teacher.”

  • 3d ago Teams in full

Ben Sheaf (centre) is consoled by his Coventry teammates after missing a penalty in the shootout.

Jamie Jackson’s match report is in, so that’s my cue to go and write some Talking Points. Thanks for your company, correspondence and views on VAR. It’s been memorable. Coventry lost the match but won a lot of friends.

André Onana is not suspended for the Cup Final, apparently. I wish I could tell you why. His gamesmanship, in sledging Ben Sheaf, may have had an effect.

The player of the match is Bruno Fernandes. Someone call the police, Diogo Dalot’s been robbed. He was immense. Rasmus Hojlund did well too, thumping the last penalty home after the lean spell he’s been having.

On ITV Mark Pougatch notes that when Hojlund went over to celebrate near the United fans, none of his teammates joined him. “I don’t like this United team,” says Roy Keane, not for the first time.

Kai Havertz

You wait 150 years for an all-Manchester FA Cup final. Then two come along at once.

Here’s Harry Maguire. “We started the game really well,” he says, “Really professional… The penalty was so harsh, but all credit to Coventry.”

The Sky Blue flags are still flying proudly. United do a rather muted lap of honour, and rightly so.

FINAL SCORE: Coventry 3-2 Man United (2-4 on pens)

Mark Robins and his men really don’t deserve that. They mounted a great comeback, thought they’d got the winner in the 121st minute, but as so often, the first team to miss a penalty end up squeezing through.

Coventry City

UNITED WIN!

Hojlund hits it very well, into the corner. And Coventry’s hearts are broken, on penalties, at Wembley, again.

Rasmus Hojlund puts Manchester United into the FA Cup final!

Sheaf misses! Over the bar. United lead 3-2 and Hojlund has the chance to win the match.

Onana gets another yellow, Martinez-style.

Onana gets a yellow card in the shootout

Fernandes scores! United lead, for the first time since the 70-minute mark.

O’Hare misses! Flying save by Onana. Still 2-2.

But Coventry haven’t missed one yet.

Eriksen scores! So it’s 2-2.

Torp scores! Making up for the goal that was chalked off. Coventry lead 2-1.

Dalot scores, so it’s 1-1.

That’s two pens in one afternoon for Haji Wright. And he’s sent Onana the wrong way twice.

Wright scores, again. 1-0 to Coventry.

Onana can’t stop Haji Wright’s effort.

He went for the dink and Collins, after feinting to his right, stayed put.

First pen: Casemiro misses!

The pens will be taken at the United end. A few of their fans were leaving when Torp’s shot went in… Hope they’re back now.

“Garnachooooo,” says Rick Harris. “Ten Hag obviously decided to teach Garnacho a lesson by substituting him when he looked like United’s best player. If United lose this, I think Ten Hag will be sacked in the summer.” Or in the morning?

Both teams know what it feels like to go to penalties at Wembley. United beat Brighton in this fixture last year, while Coventry lost to Luton in the play-offs.

“VAR,” says Robert Speed. “Disallows open-play goals and awards pens. Just what we all wanted when it was brought in.”

FULL TIME!! Coventry 3-3 Man United

And so we go to penalties.

120+3 min United go long and win a corner.

GOAL DISALLOWED! Coventry 3-3 Man United

Torp’s goal has been torpedoed by the VAR.

Andre Onana reacts after referee Robert Jones disallows the goal. Heartbreak for Coventry.

120+2 min Torp pointed to where he wanted it and then stuck out a toe. But it may be offside…

GOALLLLLLLLL!!!!!!! Coventry 4-3 Man United (Torp 120+12)

They’ve done it! Fabulous stuff.

Torp scores

120 min Eriksen’s cross almost finds Hiojlund, but then Coventry attack again…

119 min Maguire goes down the left wing. Hojlund crosses to nobody. Antony hits a volley on the turn, into Row X.

117 min Forson goes close, hitting his shot from the D just over the bar. Replays suggests Onana got a finger to that shot from Simms. It’s all happening, but it’s still 3-3.

Simms hits the bar!

115 min From close range. Anything Fernandes can do …

Ellis Simms sees his shot come back off the bar!

114 min A poor ball in a good position from Hojliund allows Coventry to counter. Then United come again: Antony’s shot is blocked, Amad’s goes wide.

113 min Just before that, Fernandes went down in the D, thinking he’d won a free kick.

113 min Close! Coventry break again, faster this time, and Wright drills in a left-foot shot that goes just wide of the far post.

Haji Wright fires just wide!

111 min Simms finds space down the right, but can’t quite eke out a shot. Dasilva, who’s on for somebody, picks up a yellow as United break. It’s basketball now.

110 min Hojlund has a shot for once. It’s blocked and Coventry break smoothly with Godden, whose shot is blocked in turn by Casemiro.

109 min O’Hare threatens to get away on the corner and Dalot does well to thwart him. There’s a brief VAR check for a penalty to United – usual thing, barely avoidable handball – but it’s not given.

108 min One corner brings two as Eriksen’s shot is deflected.

107 min Maguire comes close! He goes on the longest run seen at Wembley since Ricky Villa, and ends up shooting from a tight angle and winning a corner.

107 min No subs from Erik ten Hag, so no United debuts today.

106 min Coventry sub: Godden for Tavares, who was hobbling.

HALF-TIME IN EXTRA TIME: Coventry 3-3 Man United

United were better in that segment, which isn’t saying a lot. Coventry still full of spirit, but cramp may be setting in.

Avram Glazer and Sir Jim Ratcliffe

105 min The excellent Dalot puts in an overlap that frees Forson to have a go. He shoots wide but close enough to win a corner as Collins plays safe, only for the corner to come to nothing.

103 min An enforced change for United as McTominay pulls up lame. With no midfielders left on the bench, they have to bring on a third right-winger. Omari Forsson joins Antony and Amad. Antony was already on the left and Amad is now at No 10, with Fernandes as the 8.

Omari Forson replaces Scott McTominay.

100 min Sheaf’s long shot curls just wide. If Coventry hadn’t started with a back five, they’d be out of sight.

97 min United break with Amad looking busy again, but he loses his way as Coventry do well to get bodies back.

“I spoke too soon,” says Richard Hooker. “Upon reflection, I don’t think MU would make much of an impact in the Championship.”

97 min United pass it around, with Amad again to the fore. He can smell the glory again. Casemiro’s long ball finds Fernandes, who heads wide.

Fernandes hits the bar!

92 min Almost a Geoff Hurst! Fed by Amad, Fernandes hits his shot handsomely, but it bounces back into play, not over the line.

Bruno Fernandes hits the bar! So close to another goal for United.

‘destiny 2’ confirms timeline for ‘the final shape’ campaign splitting, raid launch.

With Destiny 2 players complaining about its raid date being so close to campaign launch, Bungie has come out to clarify what exactly is going on, and it’s what I figured , it has to do with the story finale of the Light and Darkness saga.

Destiny 2 expansion Project Lead Catarina Macedo took to Twitter to explain why this is happening:

“Hey everyone! Want to talk about why The Final Shape raid is going live shortly after release on June 7. We know this is a tight turnaround and wanted to share some context on why we made this decision. Back in August, we said that finishing the campaign would not be the grand finale of the Light and Darkness saga. You will be facing off against the Witness in the raid, and for non-raiders there will be an opportunity for everyone to experience the conclusion sometime after the raid.”

“The Final Shape expansion is different: the additional content in the Pale Heart post-campaign and unlocking the raid for everyone is important for getting a cohesive and satisfying story experience. We're looking at you raiders to be the tip of the spear. When raid day arrives, no matter if you choose to go in for Contest mode in the first 48 hours or wait for Normal mode to unlock, in order to experience the story linearly and as intended, you need to have the campaign completed and finish the quest 'Wild Card'. Prioritize those!”

In short, the reason the raid is so close is that the finale of the expansion explaining the final fate of the Witness and Traveler cannot be delayed until reset or ten days from launch or anything that would kill the momentum of the expansion.

proofreading activities for grade 2

Best Nintendo Switch Games: It’s Mario’s World, We’re Just Visiting

Later, an actual timeline was confirmed by Bungie as to how The Final Shape will launch, in terms of its mission raid structure:

1) Start with seven campaign missions

2) Players complete the quest “Wild Card” (unclear what this is)

3) The raid launches on Friday, three days after launch (Macedo says players will start making artifact progress from day one of release).

4) The eighth and final campaign story mission takes place after the raid and is likely the actual final showdown against the Witness, rather than the raid itself ending its story. I have to believe this is because Bungie doesn’t want just a tiny percent of the population, day one raiders, to finish the story through a world’s first race, which makes sense.

5) The following week at reset, the first episode launches, Echoes, the Vex-focused storyline that will be broken into three parts over the course of four months. It’s unclear if there might be lingering, unknown quests from Final Shape itself besides this.

So, I do think that clears things up, and I understand the need to have the raid that close to launch so the story can be finished by the end of the weekend rather than dragging itself out. And it wouldn’t make a ton of sense to have the entire campaign before the raid, and have the raid itself end the story.

Prepare accordingly, you have a month and a half-ish left to strategize.

AEW Dynasty results, grades: Will Ospreay, Bryan Danielson deliver epic match; Swerve Strickland wins title

Danielson vs. ospreay lived up to the hype, while swerve made aew history in the main event.

AEW Dynasty arrived with a bang. The promotion's newest pay-per-view premiered at the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on Sunday night, and it produced a wave of new champions, including an instant "match of the year" contender in Will Ospreay vs. Bryan Danielson.

That match clocked in at 32 minutes and culminated with Ospreay nailing Danielson with his Hidden Blade finisher and a ruthless Tiger Driver '91 maneuver. Danielson's inability to stand after the onslaught prompted the referee to start to call for the medical team but Ospreay went right back after Danielson with another Hidden Blade to the back of the head, securing the win. The final scene of Ospreay looking down at a barely conscious Danielson all but guarantees we'll get a rematch down the road. But for now, the match stands right up there with Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes in the main event of WWE WrestleMania XL as the best matches of 2024.

The wild night concluded with Swerve Strickland defeating Samoa Joe to become the new AEW champion, the first Black wrestler to hold the company's top prize in its five-year history. Swerve was one of four new champions crowned, and there was also a title unification earlier on AEW Dynasty.

CBS Sports was with you the whole way through the event providing updates and highlights as the action went down.

2024 AEW Dynasty results, grades

AEW Championship -- Samoa Joe (c) vs. Swerve Strickland: Swerve was able to keep Joe down for a three count with a powerbomb from the second turnbuckle and his Swerve Stomp finisher, the second time he hit it in the match. With the win, Strickland becomes AEW's first Black world champion. The match came at the end of a long, emotional pay-per-view, but Strickland's victory still felt like a moment of triumph. He was AEW's biggest breakout star of 2023. Now let's see what he can do as its top champion . Swerve def. Joe via pinfall to win the title | Grade: B+

Tag Team Championship (Vacant) -- The Young Bucks vs. FTR (Ladder Match): Just as Cash Wheeler was about to unhook the titles, a masked figure jumped the barricade and pushed over Wheeler's ladder. The man was revealed to be Jack Perry, who was quickly taken away by security. Amid the chaos, the Bucks grabbed the titles for the win. This was arguably the best Bucks vs. FTR match of their series, though it was hurt by having to follow Danielson vs. Ospreay. Perry's interference was a nice touch, and he got the big reaction AEW was likely hoping for. This is the Bucks' record third tag team title reign in AEW. Bucks def. FTR to win the vacant titles | Grade: B+

Will Ospreay vs. Bryan Danielson: The final moments of this epic clash saw Danielson and Opsreay both attempt their trademark finishers (respectively the running knee and Hidden Blade) simultaneously with the latter getting the better of the exchange. Ospreay then dropped Danielson on his head with a Tiger Driver '91, prompting the referee to call over the medical trainer. Unaware of what was happening in storyline, Ospreay hit another Hidden Blade to the back of Danielson's head for the pin. AEW's ringside physicians immediately rushed to Danielson, who was unable to stand as Ospreay and Don Callis checked on him.

This is a "match of the year" contender you must go out of your way to watch. Hopefully, we'll get a rematch soon. Ospreay def. Danielson via pinfall | Grade A+

Women's Championship -- Toni Storm (c) vs. Thunder Rosa: With the referee's back turned, Storm nailed Rosa with a low-blow kick to the crotch and Storm Zero to retain her title. Rosa hasn't quite regained her momentum since returning from hiatus, but Storm's shenanigans are still as entertaining as ever. Storm def. Rosa via pinfall to retain the title | Grade: B-

FTW Championship -- Hook © vs. Chris Jericho (FTW Rules): Hook managed to kick out of Jericho's Judas Effect twice, but the challenger still walked away with the win after nailing Hook in the head with his baseball bat. This match simply didn't show signs of life until its final moments. St. Louis wanted absolutely nothing to do with Jericho, hitting him with "please retire" and "go home Jericho, go home" chants. Unfortunately, the title changing hands means the program will continue. Jericho def. Hook via pinfall to win the title | Grade: D+

International Championship -- Roderick Strong (c) vs. Kyle O'Reilly: Strong put O'Reilly away with an End of Heartache to conclude a fast-paced yet brutal match. Adam Cole and the rest of the Undisputed Kingdom came out to celebrate with Cole exiting his wheelchair to indicate he's closer to being cleared for a return. This felt like a match straight out of mid-2010s Ring of Honor and was exactly what you'd expect from two men with well over a decade of history together … but it probably would've been better served on an episode of Dynamite rather than be stuck in the middle of a long pay-per-view card. Strong def. O'Reilly via pinfall to retain the title | Grade: B

TBS Championship – Julia Hart (c) vs. Willow Nightingale (House Rules): Nightingale had the clear power advantage and made quick work of Hart, putting her away with her Dr. Bomb finisher in about 6 minutes. Mercedes Mone arrived to remind Willow that they'll wrestle at Double or Nothing in late May for the title.Between Hart's reported injury and the teased Mone match, Nightingale was the clear favorite entering the show. Still, seeing her win her first AEW title was a feel-good moment for one of AEW's most likable personalities. Nightingale def. Hart via pinfall to win the title | Grade C+

Adam Copeland, Eddie Kingston & Mark Briscoe vs. House of Black: Throughout the six-man tag match, Malakai Black made an effort to avoid Copeland at all costs. Copeland looked to finally get his hands on Black when he attempted a spear while the rest of the ring was empty, but Black countered by blinding him, spitting his black mist right into Copeland's face. Black followed with The End for the win, pinning the reigning TNT champion in the process. This was chaotic from the opening bell and all six men got the chance to shine. They're telling a story that Black is in Copeland's head, and the finish fed right into that. House of Black def. Copeland, Kingston & Briscoe via pinfall | Grade: B

Continental Championship -- Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. Pac: Okada spent the bulk of the match attacking Pac's neck, only for Pac to reverse a tombstone piledriver. Pac went for the Black Arrow, but Okada blocked it twice – once with a referee and again by getting his knees up. The champion quickly transitioned into a Rainmaker for the title retention. This was a ton of fun and felt like one of the many Okada matches fans raved about from his New Japan days. While it's different seeing him as an outright heel, nobody can claim he's phoning it in now that he's working stateside. Okada def. Pac via pinfall to retain the title | Grade: A-

Title Unification -- The Acclaimed [c, AEW Trios] vs. Bang Bang Gang [c, ROH Six-Man] (Zero Hour): Both teams seemingly had their opponents dead to rights late in the match, but it eventually came down to White hitting Billy Gunn with a Blade Runner for the win. While neither set of trios championships have felt particularly important over the past year, unifying them and handing them to one of the company's most entertaining factions is the right call. Bang Bang Gang def. The Acclaimed via pinfall to unify the titles | Grade: C+

Orange Cassidy & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Shane Taylor & Lee Moriarty (Zero Hour) : Anthony Ogogo was ringside at commentary and helped Taylor take out Shibata early, but the numbers game didn't help much as Cassidy won with an Orange Punch, pinning Moriarty. Fun little match, and I enjoy the work of all four men, but it easily could've been a standard TV tag team match. Cassidy & Shibata def. Taylor & Moriarty via pinfall | Grade: C-

Trent Beretta vs. Matt Sydal (Zero Hour): As a St. Louis native, Sydal had the crowd on his side, but Beretta got the early advantage with newfound aggression from his recent heel turn. Sydal rallied with a meteora and had Beretta trapped in the corner, but Beretta drove Sydal's face into the turnbuckle. He then nailed a Gotch-style piledriver and running knee before locking in a submission for the win. After the match, Mike Sydal ran in to check on his brother, prompting Beretta to attack him, too.

Chuck Taylor saved, prompting Beretta to flee and demand to know whether Taylor was with him or against him by Dynamite on Wednesday. Despite being a babyface for years, Beretta's offense fits right perfectly with his heel persona. I doubt Taylor will follow him as a heel, but it's nice to see AEW doing something with Best Friends beyond Orange Cassidy's weekly booking. Beretta def. Sydal via submission | Grade: B-

This is a "match of the year" contender must go out of your way to watch. Hopefully, we'll get a rematch soon. Ospreay def. Danielson via pinfall | Grade A+
