Title: aligning language models with human preferences.

Abstract: Language models (LMs) trained on vast quantities of text data can acquire sophisticated skills such as generating summaries, answering questions or generating code. However, they also manifest behaviors that violate human preferences, e.g., they can generate offensive content, falsehoods or perpetuate social biases. In this thesis, I explore several approaches to aligning LMs with human preferences. First, I argue that aligning LMs can be seen as Bayesian inference: conditioning a prior (base, pretrained LM) on evidence about human preferences (Chapter 2). Conditioning on human preferences can be implemented in numerous ways. In Chapter 3, I investigate the relation between two approaches to finetuning pretrained LMs using feedback given by a scoring function: reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) and distribution matching. I show that RLHF can be seen as a special case of distribution matching but distributional matching is strictly more general. In chapter 4, I show how to extend the distribution matching to conditional language models. Finally, in chapter 5 I explore a different root: conditioning an LM on human preferences already during pretraining. I show that involving human feedback from the very start tends to be more effective than using it only during supervised finetuning. Overall, these results highlight the room for alignment techniques different from and complementary to RLHF.

One of sciences that growing rapidly is Biometric. In this world, there can't be two identical humans, even though they are twins. Every human being must have different characteristics from the others. The iris is the part of the eye that is protected by the cornea so that it has a relatively stable shape and pattern. Iris recognition is a biometric identification method based on iris patterns. Meanwhile, twins mostly have the same physical characteristics, so it is interesting to investigate how the iris between twins is related and its effect on Iris recognition. In this paper, the relationship or the similarity of iris between twins was studied using a correlation test. Meanwhile, the effect of similarity between twins on iris recognition was investigated from changes in the accuracy of iris recognition when the number of twins' iris was increased in the data. The database was taken from CASIA Interval and Casia Twin. From this research, the results showed that Iris between twins had a high level of similarity and relationship, it can be seen from the high and significant correlation value, and the number of twins' iris in the data was negatively related to the accuracy of iris recognition, namely the more iris's twins on the data, the smaller the accuracy.

Biometric systems are an alternate to traditional identification systems. According to International Standard Organization (ISO), biometric means “automated recognition of individuals on the basis of their physiological and behavioral characteristics”. A physiological feature is a feature which is physically present in the body of a person. These features are extracted from human body using specific equipments and techniques. The physiological features based biometrics include iris image, finger prints, thumb print, palm print, face, finger veins, hand geometry, DNA sequence, iris image, heartbeat, and palates etc. The behavioral features are the features which are extracted from day-to-day sociological behaviors of a person. The behavioral features used for personal identification are gait signature, voice, lip motion, body language, and handwriting etc. Every human being can be uniquely identified on the basis of physiological & behavioral characteristics. This research work provides an overview of single feature and multiple features based biometric systems, including the performance of physiological and behavioral characteristics. In this research work the strengths and weaknesses of various multi features based biometric approaches published so far are analyzed. DNA matching has become one of the most useful biometric identification methods during the last several years. In this research work the compressed DNA sequence is used for identifying a dead person. The DNA sequence stores information for creating and organizing an organism. It can be thought of as a string over the alphabets {A, C, G, T, N} which makes four chemical components that make it up. Here, N represents an unknown nucleotide. This unknown nucleotide may be either A, or C, or G, or T. The size of each sequence is varying in the range of millions to billions of nucleotides. Compression of DNA is interesting for both practical reasons (such as reduced storage and transmission cost) and functional reasons (such as inferring structure and function from compression models). We have presented a new lossless DNA sequence compression algorithm; which compresses DNA data first horizontally and then vertically. It is based on substitution and statistical methods. We found that our proposed algorithm achieves one of the best compression ratios in comparison to other DNA sequence compression methods for bench mark DNA sequence datasets. In this research work we have introduced an efficient Eigen values based technique for online iris image compression and identification of a human including the cases of identical twins. The implementation of iris based identification method leads us to believe that our method is giving the best matching result in the case of identical twins and individuals. It is an efficient, secure and economically feasible approach for online personal identification. The iris image is extracted after removing pupil, eye brow, skin, and other noise disturbances from an actual image. The extracted iris image is divided into different blocks of size 16x16. Now, Eigen values are calculated for each block and these Eigen values are stored in the smart card memory for further identification. Therefore, checking whether two iris images are identical or not, all we need is to compare the stored Eigen values with online calculated Eigen values. If two iris images have the same Eigen values then it means that both iris images are belonging to the same person. We have concluded that iris images of different persons have different Eigen values including the cases of identical twins. We conducted experiments on CASIA and Multimedia University iris image databases and we found that our Eigen values based iris image identification Technique is giving 99.99% of accuracy for the same image of identical twins and individuals. The twins are classified into two categories namely fraternal and identical twins. Fraternal twins differ in face structures and DNA sequences but, identical twins have the same face structure and share same DNA sequence. Therefore, it is difficult to identify identical twins on the basis of their faces and DNA sequences. In this research work, we have introduced a new approach for identifying identical twins on the basis of minutiae coordinates, orientation angles, and minutiae distances of their thumbprints. We have found that the proposed approach is superior, and robust in comparison to existing techniques in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and storage space. We tested the proposed method on thumbprint images of an identical twin pair generated using scanner device (Incept H3 T & A Terminal) and fifty pairs of identical twins of FVC04, and FVC06 datasets. Biometric systems based on a single physiological or behavioral characteristic may not be able to identify a person correctly. This thesis presents an efficient and reliable multi-biometric identification system which is based on minutiae thumb, Eigen iris, and DNA sequence features. The performance of thumbprint-iris-DNA features based multi-biometric system is analyzed in terms of security, reliability, accuracy and long-term stability. The directions of future research work are outlined. In the proposed approach compressed form of Short Tandem Repeat (STR) part of DNA sequence, compressed thumb print, and compressed iris image (Eigen values) of a person are used for further identification. Therefore, personal identification including identical twins and dead person’s cases will become easier in using this approach. We have used thumb print and iris images for identifying a living person but, for identifying a dead person we have used STR part of DNA sequence. We tested our proposed method for 100 samples of thumb prints and iris images of CASIA database and we found that our thumbprint-iris-DNA features based multi-biometric method is able to correctly identify each and every individual including identical twin. This paper presents an efficient and reliable multi-modal biometric identification system which is based on minutiae thumb, Eigen iris and DNA sequence features. In this method compressed form of Short tandem repeat (STR) part of DNA sequence, compressed thumbprint and compressed iris image (Eigen values) of a person are used for further identification of an individual. Therefore, personal identification including identical twins and dead person's cases will become easier in using this method. Our technique will correctly identify a person (living or dead) on the basis of his thumbprint, iris image and DNA sequence features. We have used thumbprint and iris images for identifying a live person. But, for identifying a dead person we have used STR part of DNA sequence. We tested our method for 100 samples of thumbprints and iris images of CASIA database and we found that our multimodal method is able to correctly identify each and every individual including identical twin on the basis of thumbprints 197

Identical twins have the closest genetics-based relationship and therefore, the maximum similarity between face is expected to be found among identical twins. Recent studies have shown that face recognition performance degrades considerably for images of identical twins. Human face matching capability is often taken into consideration as a bench-mark for assessing and improving automatic face recognition algorithms. Here, this paper will show human capability to distinguish between identical twins. If humans are able to distinguish between facial images of identical twins, it would suggest that humans are capable of identifying discriminating facial traits that can potentially be useful to develop algorithms for this very challenging problem. Iris recognition is the most accurate of the top three biometrics: fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris recognition. The CPSC M.S. program requires a student to complete a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate work including a thesis, or 36 semester hours of graduate work including a project. Students admitted to the program who lack academic experience in certain areas will be required to complete up to 18 hours of additional course work in mathematics and/or the computer science foundation courses listed below (CPSC 5000, 5010, and 5020, or their undergraduate equivalents) in order to gain needed competencies.

All students admitted to the program must complete 15 semester hours of required courses from the computer science core courses listed below. The program also includes 6 hours of thesis and at least 9 hours of computer science elective courses. The student (in consultation with his/her major adviser and the graduate program coordinator) can select an additional 3 hours of elective coursework in an area of interest within or outside of computer science.

Students may elect to undertake a project in lieu of a thesis. In this case, 6 additional hours of elective coursework, for a minimum total of 36 hours of graduate credit, are required. The courses used for these additional six hours are subject to the approval of the major adviser and the graduate program coordinator. With either the thesis or project option, a minimum of 21 hours of credit must be from UTC computer science courses at the 5000 level or above (not including CPSC 5000, 5010, or 5020, which may not be used to fulfill degree requirements).

Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and are subject to all general regulations of The Graduate School, such as those regulating admission to candidacy, transfer of credits, time limitations, thesis, and degree conferral.
