PhD Programme

1. Structure of the Ph D programme

The promotion to PhD status for continuing students in the MPhil/PhD programme is not automatic. They can be registered only for a provisional PhD until their MPhil viva-voce examination is conducted, and their CGPA is thereafter calculated. Only those students who have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 (General Category) and 5.5 (Reserved Categories) in the whole MPhil programme will be allowed to continue in the PhD programme.

A minimum of two years registration is required before a PhD thesis can be submitted. This applies both to those who have been admitted directly for a PhD as well as to those who have been promoted to PhD status on the basis of their MPhil performance. In the latter case the two year period will be counted from the date of their promotion to PhD.

Within four semesters of registering for a provisional PhD (in case of continuing students) or PhD (in case of new students), a synopsis presentation has to be made by the student before the faculty either in the third or the fourth semester. The synopsis should include as complete an idea of the chapterisation of the thesis, a brief survey of the historiography and sources, and a detailed discussion of one chapter.

A PhD thesis should be submitted within four years from the date of confirmation to the PhD programme. A thesis is expected to be not less than 80000 words. Students may refer to the Style Sheet .

The PhD submission certificate is available here .

In case a student requires an additional year to complete the thesis, s/he can apply for a 9B during the eighth semester. However beyond the fifth year no further extension is possible. The application has to be accompanied by a hard copy of atleast three or four complete chapters of the thesis.

If after completing four years, a student is not in a position to submit within a year, then s/he should deregister.

2. Calendar for the PhD programme

Students in their third semester can make their synopses presentations in the third week of November.

Students in their fourth semester have to make their synopses presentations in the fourth week of April.

Students in their eighth semester should apply for a year's extension under clause 9B either in April or October.

3. Online Progress Reports

Students in all semesters are expected to fill in the online progress report form before the end of each semester (5th Dec and 12th May). Please submit either a hard or a soft copy to your respective supervisors.

A warm welcome to the modified and updated website of the Centre for East Asian Studies. The East Asian region has been at the forefront of several path-breaking changes since 1970s beginning with the redefining the development architecture with its State-led development model besides emerging as a major region in the global politics and a key hub of the sophisticated technologies. The Centre is one of the thirteen Centres of the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi that provides a holistic understanding of the region.

Initially, established as a Centre for Chinese and Japanese Studies, it subsequently grew to include Korean Studies as well. At present there are eight faculty members in the Centre. Several distinguished faculty who have now retired include the late Prof. Gargi Dutt, Prof. P.A.N. Murthy, Prof. G.P. Deshpande, Dr. Nranarayan Das, Prof. R.R. Krishnan and Prof. K.V. Kesavan. Besides, Dr. Madhu Bhalla served at the Centre in Chinese Studies Programme during 1994-2006. In addition, Ms. Kamlesh Jain and Dr. M. M. Kunju served the Centre as the Documentation Officers in Chinese and Japanese Studies respectively.

The academic curriculum covers both modern and contemporary facets of East Asia as each scholar specializes in an area of his/her interest in the region. The integrated course involves two semesters of classes at the M. Phil programme and a dissertation for the M. Phil and a thesis for Ph. D programme respectively. The central objective is to impart an interdisciplinary knowledge and understanding of history, foreign policy, government and politics, society and culture and political economy of the respective areas. Students can explore new and emerging themes such as East Asian regionalism, the evolving East Asian Community, the rise of China, resurgence of Japan and the prospects for reunification of the Korean peninsula. Additionally, the Centre lays great emphasis on the building of language skills. The background of scholars includes mostly from the social science disciplines; History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, International Relations and language.

Several students of the centre have been recipients of prestigious research fellowships awarded by Japan Foundation, Mombusho (Ministry of Education, Government of Japan), Saburo Okita Memorial Fellowship, Nippon Foundation, Korea Foundation, Nehru Memorial Fellowship, and Fellowship from the Chinese and Taiwanese Governments. Besides, students from Japan receive fellowship from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations.

Writing Proposal and Synopsis for Ph.D in English

Writing Proposal and Synopsis for Ph.D in English

Prof. (Dr.) Asghar Ali Ansari

Deptt. of English, JNU, Jaipur.

Ph.D in English

A Ph.D in English is a degree awarded to a person who has pursued higher studies in terms of advance research. After completing your Masters in English literature , you can opt for your Ph.D in English literature or language. But to become a Ph.D scholar in English you have to first write a Ph.D proposal and Synopsis. In this blog we are going to discuss the Ph.D proposals, how to write them and their importance in detail.

If you want to become a Ph.D scholar, the first step is that you must be dedicated and serious regarding your research. To get enrolled in a good university is not enough. You should also be motivated and should be ready to face all the difficulties and challenges in the way of completing your Ph.D in English. To get a Ph.D degree is not an easy task. It requires hard work, dedication, and one has to be creative. So, think about Ph.D only when you are yourself inclined towards it and ready to face all the problems and difficulties in the way of getting a Ph.D Degree. Please do not turn towards Ph.D because you did not find a job after your post graduation as many people do and you think that after doing Ph.D you will get a good job and earn a lot of money. If it is your intention then it is advisable that you should start a business of yours and you will earn a lot and become rich. Do Ph.D only when you are creative and innovative and have a developed research aptitude and a keen interest in English language and literature.

Ph.D Proposal and Synopsis:

Before choosing a topic for your Ph.D thesis, what you are going to write on this topic must be clear in your mind which should be in a written form. The outlines of your proposed research is called the Ph.D Proposal or Synopsis. It indicates your motives and plans which you are going to implement in your thesis during your Ph.D days. So be careful while writing Ph.D proposal and Synopsis because they play very important role in achieving your goal. In fact it is a reflection of your would be work, what you are going to do in your research. If the proposal is effective, well- written and clear, then half work is done for you.

While writing a Ph.D proposal do not be hasty and random. Think over this again and again and take help from your guide. Write the first draft, then revise it and after a deep thought, when you think it proper, write the final draft and submit it. In your proposal you must mention your plan, your methodology and the main research questions for which you are going to search the answers. Mention clearly what you want to do, what methodology you want to apply in your research, how your study will find out the answers of your research questions and most importantly how your research is going to contribute in the field of your research areas. I am sure that by now you would have understood how important Ph.D Proposal is for your research. In fact the proposal and

synopsis are the first step in the area of your research and so you should write a good synopsis for your research because it will highlight the area of your research as its going to be your authorship in future.

While writing synopsis you must have a critical and dedicative approach. It also often happens with many scholars, that after studying and reading for sometimes, their thoughts and ideas are refined and so they need to make some corrections in their proposals, and sometimes to change the entire course of their research. In this case it is advisable to present a revised synopsis at the time of annual review.I again repeat that you must write a well-organized and clear proposal or synopsis. It must also contain a summary of your work which have already been done or finally completed. This summary should also be clearly written and every point in it should indicate your reading and grasp of the subject.

Proposal or Synopsis must contain the followings:

  • Title: Choose an appropriate and suitable title which should attract the attention of the readers.
  • Aims and Statement of the topic: The aim should be straight forward & clear.
  • Review of Literature: At least ten to fifteen reviews of literature must be there which will exhibit your knowledge of the project which you are handling.
  • Research Methodology: Clearly mention how you are going to conduct the research. What will be your approach./ This is important.
  • Clearly mention the importance of your study. How it is going to contribute in the field of research.
  • Research gap is also very important. Mention the gap and how your research will fill the void.
  • Mention your findings.
  • Conclusion of your research.

Length of Synopsis:

It is highly advisable that the synopsis or proposal should not be lengthy. It must be precise and impressive. If it is not precise and impressive, it may be rejected by the research committee. So, if you need, take the help of expert Ph.D holders.

JNU to accept NET score instead of entrance exams for PhD programmes

J awaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced a change in its selection process for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes. Starting from the current academic year, JNU will accept the National Eligibility Test (NET) score instead of conducting its own entrance test, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This decision comes after the University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a directive allowing universities to use the NET scores for PhD admissions, as stated in a notice released by JNU on Saturday.

The move to use NET scores for PhD admissions replaces the entrance test previously conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). According to the notice, JNU will implement this change for the academic session 2024-25.

However, this decision has sparked concerns among some students. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) expressed apprehensions that replacing PhD entrance exams with NET scores could disadvantage students from marginalised backgrounds, leading to fewer opportunities for them to pursue research. Following a protest at the UGC Headquarters, the JNUSU met with a UGC Joint Secretary, highlighting their concerns. The UGC Joint Secretary assured them that the matter would be discussed internally and reiterated that universities have the autonomy to conduct their entrance exams.

In response to these developments, JNUSU is scheduled to meet with the Director of Admissions on April 29 to demand that the PhD entrance exam for this year and future years be conducted through JNUEE, the university's own entrance examination.

Education, for me, is emancipation. I strongly believe in that education which brings transformation in society. This belief, I think, is due to my socio-economic background. Coming from an illiterate community and one of the most backward districts of Orissa, i.e. Kalahandi, I have been struggling to get myself educated. It is another matter that I have now been a part of Delhi University, one of the premier educational institutes in our country. Ever since I started receiving education I was fascinated by its noble objective. So from the very beginning I wanted to be a teacher. My dream has finally been realised. Now that I have nearly settled down in life my endeavour is to use my skills and knowledge for the greater benefit of people at large. For this I am using my teaching and research components. My research areas, over the years, have been issues relating to caste, class, ethnicity, language, religion and gender in literature. My most recent research projects are on the subjectivity of marginal voices especially on Dalit literature. Thus by and large education has helped me to explore some possibilities which I am striving for.

Theses and Dissertations are one of the important primary sources of information; and generally, libraries of every academic institution maintain a separate collection of theses and dissertations for reference of their user community. Normally, theses and dissertations are meant to be used within the library premises, therefore, access to and use of these valuable resources of every library is limited.

The Central Library of the University has been receiving theses and dissertations from various schools, centres and affiliated institutions of the university. The Library maintains a separate collection of theses and dissertation, and its bibliographic details are maintained along with other library resources. Users can search it in the online public access catalogue (OPAC) of JNU Library which is available at or can be accessed from Home Page of Central Library http://www.jnu.ac.in/Library

The date of oldest thesis available in the library goes back to the year 1960 when the doctorate degree was awarded to Tarun Chandra Bose by former Indian School of International Studies (ISIS), University of Delhi which was later merged in JNU. The thesis of first PhD awarded by JNU in the year 1970 is also available in the library. As on March 2014, JNU library has over 21,000 theses and dissertations awarded by the University and its affiliated institutes. The research topics of this collection are from various subject domains of humanities, social sciences & sciences disciplines. The collection contains approximately 18,000 unique theses and dissertation titles.

Advent and proliferation of information and communication technologies has greatly influenced the way information sources are managed and disseminated by libraries. Simultaneously, it has also impacted the information seeking behaviour of library users and has raised their expectations from libraries. Therefore, the library envisioned to make Table of Contents (TOC) of theses and dissertations available online along with the its bibliographic details in OPAC.

In 2007, the library started in-house project to digitise title page and TOC of theses and dissertations in order to make them available as part of bibliographic records. Approximately, ten thousand theses and dissertations were scanned and their TOC were uploaded bibliographic database of the library. This increased users’ satisfaction level as well as commitment of the library towards applications of ICT Infrastructure in library activities.

In 2012, the library took one more gigantic step towards increasing visibility and usage of its theses and dissertation collection by digitizing them and started project for digitization of all the theses and dissertations available with library. Digitization work has been outsourced and till date, more than 17,000 hard volumes of theses and dissertations have been digitized. More than 30 lacs digitized pages restrain knowledge of over 5,500 PhD theses and more than 12,000 M.Phil. dissertations. Almost all available back volumes of theses and dissertations have already been digitised; and, the work on the newly received theses and dissertations is in progress. It is expected to be completed in near future.

Recently, the University has signed an MoU with INFLIBNET Centre and accordingly has provided digitized copy of more than 5,000 PhD theses to INFLIBNET Centre to make them available in Shodhganga .

Furthermore, the University envisioned and started developing its own online repository of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). Although, JNU’s PhD theses are available in Shodhganga, its ETD Repository envisages making MPhil Dissertations available in public domain along with PhD theses. The university has framed its policy for availability of ETDs under open access with an embargo period of three years. The requisite infrastructure for development of JNU’s ETD Repository is ready; work is progressing with a rapid pace and it is expected to make it available at http://etd.lib.jnu.ac.in very soon.

JNU to accept National Eligibility Test instead of entrance exams for PhD programs

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU ) | Mathrubhumi

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced that it will accept the National Eligibility Test (NET) score instead of the entrance test conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) as the selection parameter for admission to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs from the current academic year.

UGC to help the students with one national entrance test as part of the implementation of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, has decided vide its Public Notice dated March 27, 2024, that score of National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC and CSIR can be used by the Universities/HEIs for Ph.D Admission in place of entrance test, read the notice released by JNU on Saturday.

Following this directive, JNU has opted to use the NET scores for PhD admissions, effectively replacing the entrance test previously conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

"Accordingly, JNU has decided to use NET score in place of the entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to Ph.D Programmes in the University from the academic session 2024-25," the notice added.

Recently, after a protest by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) at the University Grants Commission (UGC) Headquarters, the Joint Secretary of UGC met the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) office bearers.

The JNUSU pointed out that the arbitrary decision to replace PhD Entrance Exams with NET scores will further alienate a lot of students, especially those from marginalised sections, from research and the gates of universities will close for many.

The UGC Joint Secretary had responded that they would be holding an internal meeting on these points. It was also communicated that universities have the autonomy to conduct their entrance exams.

The JNUSU will be meeting the Director of Admissions on April 29, to demand that the PhD entrance exam for this year and henceforth be done through JNUEE. (ANI)
