Economics research at Heriot-Watt is focused around our two research centres:

  • The Spatial Economics and Econometrics Centre (SEEC)
  • The Centre for Energy Economics Research and Policy  (CEERP)

We also have expertise in the area of Development Economics right from household behaviour through to wider demographic issues, as well as Macro and Monetary Economics, notably monetary policy.

We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates. Please note that it is not necessary to have identified a potential supervisor before submitting your application.

Students successful in obtaining a place on our PhD programme normally commence their research studies at the start of the academic year in September. However, it is possible to join the PhD programme at an agreed date during the academic year.

N.B: In order that your application can be processed please ensure all of the supporting documents listed below are submitted with your application:

1. Academic Transcripts and Degree Certificates

Copies of full academic transcripts from all previous academic degree courses and copies of degree certificates for degrees already awarded.

If you are currently pursuing a degree course please provide all available marks to date.

2. Research Proposal

The research proposal should be around 5-8 pages long and contain as much as possible of the following: an introduction or outline of the proposed topic; a statement of objectives and/or specific research questions; a summary of some of the relevant literature which supports the research objective(s); an indication of the intended research methodology; an indication of the theoretical structure and/or conceptual outline; a provisional timetable of the major phases of the research process; results expected from the research e.g. practical value of the research or possible contributions to knowledge or policy or methodology. At this stage we are not looking for a definitive document but merely an indication that you have thought through most of the above issues.

We offer three MSc programmes that provide you with a high-quality and thorough training in economics and econometrics.

The programmes are research-oriented and are highly challenging, making heavy use of analytical theory, mathematics and statistics.

Our MSc programmes will equip you with the tools a professional economist needs to work in government or in international organisations, to conduct economic research.

We deliver rigorous training in the core areas of economics to give you comprehensive knowledge in the latest analytical and quantitative techniques.

Our graduates have found employment in a wide variety of private and public organisations in the UK and abroad including: financial services; Civil Service; UK Government Economic Service; Department for International Development; economists with overseas development agencies and international institutions; research economists with journals and media agencies.

PhD in Business Economics entry requirements

Admission to our PhD in Business Economics is highly competitive. While academic credentials are important for a successful application we also pay great attention to the fit of students to both the programme and the research interests of our academic faculty.

Apply early. Supervisors can accept students on a first-come, first-served basis, and the programme may close early if it reaches capacity.

Applicants for the PhD in Business Economics programme should hold a postgraduate master's degree from an accredited institution in the UK or overseas showing evidence of above-average academic achievement. This includes:

  • A degree classification with a mark of 65% or more overall (or UK equivalent).
  • Normally a master's dissertation at the distinction level (or UK equivalent). Those with an MBA or masters' students without a dissertation are welcome to apply but should provide evidence of distinction-level work within their degree.
  • Applicants with significant industry experience or with relevant professional qualifications will be given due consideration on a case-by-case basis. However, these applicants must also have a minimum of a bachelors degree in a relevant programme with significant quantitative elements.

Applications may be accepted from those still currently studying for a master's degree; however, any offer will be conditional on the successful completion of the degree at the required standard.

Please note: If you are currently studying for or have completed an undergraduate degree and do not yet have a Master's qualification, please consider applying for our MSc by Research programme. You can use this as a stepping stone on to any of our PhD programmes.

You must demonstrate English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies, regardless of your nationality or country of residence. You can do this either by providing an approved English certificate, or providing a degree certificate.

English language certificates

We accept the following English language qualifications as evidence when they meet the minimum grades:

  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System) including IELTS Online: 7.0 (at least 6.0 in each section)
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) iBT (including Special Home Edition): total 100 (at least 20 in each section)
  • C1 Advanced (formerly CAE) and C2 Proficiency (formerly CPE) : total 185 (at least 169 in each module)
  • Trinity ISE (Integrated Skills in English) : ISE III with a Pass in all four components
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) : total 70 (at least 59 in each section) (Please note that we have suspended acceptance of PTE Academic Online with immediate effect)

Your English language qualification must be no more than two years old from the start date of the programme you are applying to study, unless you are using C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, in which case it can be no more than three and a half years old.

Degrees taught and assessed in English

For evidence of English competency we accept an undergraduate or postgraduate degree that has been taught and assessed in a majority English speaking country, as defined by UK Visas and Immigration:

PhD studentship in "Machine Learning Theory & Economics"

One fully funded, full-time PhD position to work with Dr Fengxiang He at the Artificial Intelligence and its Applications Institute (AIAI), School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh on a project titled “Machine Learning Theory & Economics”.

The aim of this project could be in deep learning theory, privacy in machine learning, theory of decentralised learning, symmetry in machine learning, learning theory in game-theoretical problems, and their applications in economics, such as auction, voting, resource allocation, and decentralised finance.

Candidate’s profile

  • A Bachelor’s Hons degree (at class 2.1 or above, or international equivalent) and/or Master’s degree in a relevant subject (mathematics, statistics, economics, or related subject)
  • A strong mathematical background, with an emphasis on analysis, algebra, geometry, differential equation, probability, and statistics. Recipients of mathematics competition medals are highly desirable
  • Proficiency in English (both oral and written)
  • Relevant research experiences in machine learning, statistics, economics, etc. are desirable but not necessary
  • Programming skills in Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc. are a plus but not necessary

Studentship and eligibility

The School funded studentship starting in the academic year 2023/24 covers:

  • Full time PhD tuition fees for a student with a Home fee status (£4,712 per annum) and/or overseas fee status (£29,700 per annum)
  • A tax-free stipend of £18,622 per year for 3.5 years
  • Additional programme costs of £1,000 per year

He received BSc in statistics from University of Science and Technology of China, MPhil and PhD from the University of Sydney. His research interest is trustworthy AI, with emphasis on deep learning theory and explainability, theory of decentralised learning, symmetry in machine learning, learning theory in game-theoretical problems, and their applications in economics and finance. He is a member of IEEE's Global Initiative on XR Ethics, AI/ML Terminology and Data Formats Working Group, Decentralized Metaverse Initiative, and Ethical Assurance of Data-Driven Technologies for Mental Healthcare. Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics

The Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics (SGPE) is part of a unique collaborative venture that combines the teaching expertise of eight Scottish universities:

Some applicants may receive an offer that is conditional on successful completion of our Pre-sessional Summer Programme.

You can apply without having a graduate admissions exam result (GRE or GMAT). Your application, however, may be substantially stronger if you do include such a result. We generally look for a quantitative reasoning result in the 80th percentile or higher. We do not formally consider results from the Verbal and Analytical sections in our assessment of your application.

Msc economics (finance) - 1 year (full-time), msc economics - 1 year (full-time), application deadlines.

Due to high demand, the school operates a number of selection deadlines. We will make a small number of offers to the most outstanding candidates on an ongoing basis, but hold the majority of applications until the next published selection deadline when we will offer a proportion of the places available to applicants selected through a competitive process.

Please be aware that applications must be submitted and be complete, i.e. all required documents uploaded, by the relevant application deadline in order to be considered in that round. Your application will still be considered if you have not yet met the English language requirement for the programme.

You must submit one reference with your application.

You are required to provide a document summarising your most advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics courses, including details of the topics covered and the primary textbooks used. Your application will be on hold until this document has been submitted.

Please only apply for one of the three programmes. Any duplicate application will not be considered. Transfer between these is permitted upon registration.
