Implementing Effective STEM Education with Book Creator

ncert books on education

I n a world increasingly driven by technology and innovation, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education still lacks the attention it needs in our schools.  But what makes STEM education so critical? Let’s look at some compelling economic and social indicators.

The economic benefit of STEM career is compelling. STEM workers command a significant wage premium compared to their non-STEM counterparts. As of 2024, the median annual wage for STEM professions in the United States is $101,650, highlighting the lucrative potential of these careers ( Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2024 ).

This stark difference in earnings underscores the value of investing in STEM education, which not only equips students with valuable skills but also enhances their future earning potential.

The demand for skilled STEM professionals is not slowing down. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2024), STEM-related occupations are expected to grow by 10.8% from 2022 to 2032, a rate more than twice that of non-STEM jobs. This robust growth indicates that STEM skills will be increasingly sought after, making STEM education an essential asset for the upcoming workforce.

Graph of Average US Salaries, 2023 and US Projected Job Growth 2022-2032.

However, a global analysis reveals a concerning trend: Western Europe and the United States lag behind other regions in the number of STEM graduates produced, according to the World Economic Forum (2023). This disparity emphasizes the urgent need to enhance STEM educational initiatives in these areas to remain competitive on the international stage.

Addressing Underrepresentation in STEM

While STEM fields offer great opportunities, they also face significant challenges in diversity and inclusion. Women are underrepresented worldwide ( World Bank , 2024), and in the United States, Black and Hispanic workers are similarly underrepresented, making up 9% and 8% of STEM jobs, respectively ( MIT , 2023; Pew Research Study , 2018). These disparities highlight the need for more inclusive STEM education policies that encourage and support underrepresented groups to enter and thrive in these fields.

How can we ensure effective STEM education?

STEM education is not just about equipping students with hard skills. It's also about fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity—abilities imperative for innovation and progress.

Effective STEM education revolves around engaging students in practices that scientists and engineers use in the real world. This includes the ability to generate and evaluate evidence—a crucial aspect of the science and engineering principles. For instance, students should be encouraged to:

  • Design Experiments and Prototypes: Allowing students to create and test their hypotheses or designs under real-world conditions.
  • Analyze Data: Teaching students how to collect, analyze, and draw conclusions from data, thereby helping them make informed decisions based on empirical evidence.
  • Critically Evaluate Results: Encouraging students to question and critically analyze their findings and those of others to refine their understanding and approaches.

At the same time teachers should be providing meaningful and timely feedback to help students move forward in their investigations.

Book Creator STEM Notebooks

The STEM notebooks (below) that I created with Book Creator are designed so that you can pull them into any science or engineering class and use the pages that apply most to your lesson.  I built them with the ISTE Educator Standards and Universal Design for Learning in mind.

Why start from scratch when you can remix a @BookCreatorApp template? Try it with my STEM Notebooks! Link in bio. pic.twitter.com/oleErpS8bn — Katie Fielding (@KatieF) April 18, 2024

Here are my tips for getting the most out of the notebooks:

  • Remix: Each notebook includes a curated set of teacher resources in the margins. Whether you're new to integrating the 5E Science Model, Engineering Process, or Design Thinking into your lessons, these guides will assist you in implementing each phase effectively. Use these as a flexible framework to adapt the content to fit your educational approach. Learn how to remix a book in your library.
  • Reorder and/or Remove: Tailor the notebook to meet your specific classroom needs. Feel free to remove pages that don't align with your lesson goals or student requirements. Additionally, you can rearrange the pages to better suit the flow of your instruction, ensuring a seamless learning experience for your students. Learn how to copy, rearrange, and delete pages in a book.
  • Revise: Throughout the notebook, you'll find placeholders marked “TOPIC.” Replace these with your specific lesson topics and relevant vocabulary to personalize the content for your students. This customization is key to making the material more relevant and engaging.

After you make these personalizations then you can assign a copy to each student or group.

I would love to see what you do with these STEM notebooks in your class!  Feel free to reach out or tag me on X @katief . You can also subscribe to my newsletter for updates on future notebook releases.

10 effective tips to prepare for CUET 2024

Preparing for the common university entrance test, cuet 2024 requires a structured approach and diligent effort. here are 10 effective tips to help you prepare:.

Listen to Story

Effective tips and strategies to prepare for CUET

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) is a prominent examination that offers equal opportunities for candidates across India to secure admission to numerous prestigious universities. Introduced in 2022, CUET has transformed India's higher education admission process.

CUET 2024 EXAM PATTERN

The CUET exam consists of three sections:

1. Section I (A & B): Languages - 40 questions 2. Section II: Domain-Specific - 40 questions 3. Section III: General Test - 50 questions

Candidates can select a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 subjects from all three sections combined. The marking scheme furnishes five marks for each correct answer and deducts one mark for each incorrect answer, with no deduction for unattempt questions.

SECTION-WISE PREPARATION:

Section I (A & B): Languages: In this section, candidates can pick from 13 languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Odia, and English. This section requires comprehension and interpretation skills. Reading comprehension passages will assess the candidates' skills based on factual, academic, and narrative content.

Section II: Domain-Specific: This section demands preparation based on Class 12 NCERT books, as all questions are based at that level. Students should concentrate on learning the fundamentals from their NCERT books to excel in domain-specific subjects.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE PREPARATION:

1. Start early: Commence your preparation well in advance to cover all topics comprehensively. Starting early provides sufficient time for revision and practice.

2. Focus on foundation: Master the fundamentals of all subjects to create a strong foundation. Comprehending the basics will help you learn more advanced concepts later.

3. Practice regularly: Consistent practice is vital to enhancing understanding and retention of concepts. To enhance your preparation, attempt sample papers and practice questions regularly.

4. Time management: Remember to manage your time effectively during the exam. Practice solving questions within the allocated time to boost your speed and accuracy.

5. Don't hesitate to seek guidance: If you face difficulties, seek help from teachers or join online coaching programs for expert guidance and support.

6. Prioritise weak areas: Recognise your weak areas in the syllabus and assign more time to improve them. Balance your preparation across all subjects and topics.

7. It is also essential to keep yourself updated regarding any latest changes or updates in the syllabus or exam pattern. Keep an eye on the latest news and notifications related to CUET 2024.

8. Prioritise physical and mental well-being: As the exam date approaches, students must care for their physical and mental health. Practising yoga and meditation and following a healthy diet can go a long way in this regard.

9. Furthermore, maintaining a positive attitude towards your preparation and having faith in your abilities can significantly enhance your performance.

Alan Gratz talks to Columbia students about history, connecting his characters

ncert books on education

Alan Gratz likes to create characters for his novels for young readers who are connected across miles and decades, he told hundreds of fifth- and seventh-graders on Friday in a packed Missouri Theatre.

Gratz, from Portland, gave the Authors in Schools keynote as part of the Unbound Book Festival . Columbia Public Schools Foundation and Daniel Boone Regional Library are among sponsors of the event.

He talked some about growing up an uncoordinated kid with no sports ability. He turned to writing early on with stories like "The Mummy and the Vampire" and publishing a newspaper, The Blue Spring Lane News, for the people on his street, placing it in their mailboxes whether they wanted it or not.

One elderly neighbor told him he didn't want it.

"Here, take it and like it, old man," he said, possibly imagining what he wanted to say to the neighbor.

He has published 20 books, he said.

"Prisoner B-3087" is the story of 12-year-old Jack Gruener, shipped to several Nazi concentration camps. Gruener survived the Nazis and lived until 2017.

Gratz got to know Gruener and talked with him for the book, he said.

"It's an incredible story," he said.

"Ground Zero" is a novel about the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. One character in the book is a boy separated from his dad in one of the World Trade Center towers when the airliner slams into it. Another character is a girl in Afghanistan learning English. Her family takes in an American soldier.

The book reveals their connections, but Gratz didn't reveal them to the students.

"You have to read the book," he said.

The students responded with a disappointed "aww."

"I know," Gratz said.

When Gratz introduced "Refugee," the students applauded.

"This is easily my most read book," Gratz said.

The book includes young characters from three periods of history.

More than 900 Jewish refugees were on the M.S. St. Louis, fleeing Germany in 1939.

First in Cuba, then the United States and Canada, the refugees were turned away.

"Nobody wanted these refugees," Gratz said.

The refugees ended up back in Europe, in countries neighboring Germany that were invaded by the Nazis. Most of them died in concentration camps, he said.

"None of them had to die if somebody said, "We got this. We'll take you in," Gratz said.

Another character is a Cuban refugee, coming to the U.S. in the 1990s. A third character is a Syrian refugee, fleeing the violence of its civil war.

Six million people have fled Syria since the start of the civil war and many have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea, he said.

"Nobody had to die if somebody said, 'We got this. We'll take you in ,'" he repeated.

The characters are made up, but the events happened to actual people, he said. There's a chapter devoted to each character.

"There are connections across decades and miles," Gratz said.

He brought up his book "Ban This Book" when he was asked about efforts to ban books from school libraries.

The book follows a young girl in a school where books are banned. She and her friends collect the banned books and store them in their lockers and check them out.

"A lot of what we're seeing is people taking books out of libraries so that other voices are silenced," Gratz said.

He wants eveyone to see themselves in his books, he said.

"It's really important that we don't ban books," Gratz said to big applause. "We've got to stand up for the freedom to read."

His favorite food is pizza, he said responding to a question.

"I eat pizza every day," Gratz said.

He said when they grow up, they can eat pizza every day, too.

"For now, you have to eat what your parents put in front of you," Gratz said.

How many ‘indecent’ books will be banned statewide after new Utah law takes effect in July?

State officials still working on implementing hb29 so the number is not yet known. meanwhile, some districts pull previously retained books like ‘the kite runner’ — and they’re not likely to return., by katie mckellar - utah news dispatch | apr 23, 2024.

Currently there are more questions than answers about how many books will actually be banned statewide once a new bill  passed by the 2024 Utah Legislature  becomes law.

The Utah State Board of Education is now working through how to implement HB29, which takes effect July 1 and expands upon an earlier passed in 2022 that allows parents to challenge “sensitive materials” in schools. The bills’ sponsor, Rep. Ken Ivory, has been working with a group of parent activists that has been trying for several years to  ban “pornographic” or “indecent” books in schools .

HB29  carves a pathway for books to be banned statewide if at least three school districts or at least two school districts and five charter schools determine a book is “objective sensitive material,” or has material that is “pornographic or indecent” defined under state law.

It’s not yet known how many of those books will meet that definition.

“If any material should meet the threshold requirements according to HB29, that information will be shared by USBE after July 1,” a USBE spokesperson told Utah News Dispatch.

Districts and charters are expected to be notified of any books that then need to be removed statewide after the State School Board meets in August.

“At this time, no material has been removed statewide,” the spokesperson said.

However, recently some books have been pulled from some school district shelves — not because of HB29, which has yet to be implemented, but because school districts are enforcing existing policies that were put in place after a law passed in 2022,  HB374 , laid the initial groundwork for parents to challenge books and other “sensitive materials.”

Recently pulled titles

Earlier this month, Granite School District teachers were notified in an email that on March 25, a high school parent submitted a complaint about a book titled “An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexie. The book “was found to be in violation” of the state’s current definition of “ indecent public displays ,” under descriptions or depictions of “illicit sex or sexual immorality.”

“Therefore, in accordance with our current novels policy  (linked here)  and our current sensitive materials process ( linked here ),” which were developed as a result of HB374, the district email states, “we pulled the material pending a review by the novels appeals committee. It should be noted that we consider it prudent to pull materials pending a full review because USBE (policy) makes it a reportable offense to (the Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission) if an educator ‘exposes students to sensitive materials.'”

“ An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian ” is about a boy living on the Spokane Indian Reservation that leaves his school to attend an all-white farm town high school. In 2007 it won the  National Book Awards for Young People’s Literature  that’s been described as “ funny, gritty and powerful .” However, some critics have described it as “crude” and “crass,” pointing to passages about sex and masturbation. Its supporters argue the book discusses sexual topics, but isn’t overly graphic or explicit.

The district email also stated three other books were pulled from Granite School District previously  approved novels list  “pending an objective materials review by the novels appeals committee based on likely violations” of the same section of state code “for sexual descriptions or depictions.”

Those books pulled from Granite School District shelves included:

  • “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
  • “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou
  • “The Freedom Writers Diary” by Erin Gruwell and student Freedom Writers

Why are these books being pulled again, even though earlier decisions deemed they should be retained in schools?

It’s not because of HB29 — at least not yet, according to the district.

Though the Granite School District email said the books were being pulled pending a review for “objective materials” — a term defined by HB29, which is not yet in effect — a Granite School District spokesperson told Utah News Dispatch the decision was made under existing district policies for approved novels and “sensitive materials,” which specifies available books can’t contain sexually explicit descriptions.

“Under our current policy and procedure for novels, they cannot contain pornographic material as described in section 1227 of state code,” Granite School District spokesperson Ben Horsley said, referring to the state’s definition of “indecent public displays.”

“So they’re being reviewed to see if there is in fact any legitimacy to concerns about those materials,” Horsley said.

These books have been challenged before and were put back on library shelves after a parent committee determined they didn’t violate a community standard and had literary value. But after HB374 was implemented and the  state school board adopted a rule in January  that specifies a teacher may not “expose students to sensitive materials,” Horsley said the most recent challenge to “An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” prompted district officials to take another look at the other three books.

Even though the titles are currently undergoing a review process and have not technically yet been officially banned across Granite School District, Horsley acknowledged that it’s likely they won’t return to shelves this time once HB29 takes effect. That’s because they face a high chance of being deemed “objective sensitive material” under section 1227 of state code, or the state’s definitions of “indecent public displays.”

“Given that our sensitive materials review committee actually already looked at these materials, the likelihood of them being removed permanently under HB29 is significant,” Horsley said.

However, in the meantime he said Granite School District will review books under its current process. The district posts a  complete list of book challenges  and their statuses on its  website .

‘They’re using a sledgehammer where a scalpel is called for’

One Granite School District teacher Deborah Gatrell (speaking on her own behalf and not for the district) was dismayed by the pulled titles — and she worries even more books she believes have artistic and literary value will be pulled after HB29 takes effect.

“Those books — they’re classic books. They’re not pornography,” Gatrell said, arguing that taken as a whole, the books explore topics that are relevant to maturing students who could benefit from opportunities to “catch a glimpse” of other world views and experiences.

She pointed specifically to “ I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings ” — an autobiography that explores the author’s experiences with racial prejudice. The site  Common Sense Media  described it as “strong, honest, and beautifully written,” but notes it details some “very upsetting personal incidents, including the rape of a very young girl.”

Yes, the book “deals with very difficult topics that are real issues, real problems,” Gatrell said, but she added “ sexual violence, sexual assault  is a major problem in Utah. … So taking books that talk about it out of a library is not going to help address the problem. We don’t talk about these things, and so they happen, and people don’t have the words for it because they don’t understand what it is or how to deal with it.”

Ivory and his supporters have argued throughout the debate over HB29 and HB374 that they’re only meant to keep sexually explicit content out of schools. They say they aren’t intended to “ban books,” just make what they’ve defined as inappropriate not so easily accessible to students.

Gatrell said she’s “always acknowledged that there’s room for nuanced conversation about what’s age-appropriate and what’s not school appropriate.” But “unfortunately,” she said, groups of parent activists in Utah and other states have been applying their own definitions of what’s inappropriate and asking the government to “remove anything they find objectionable.”

Gatrell worries when HB29 takes effect there will be even more titles swept up and banned statewide. She said in a recent faculty meeting there are “easily over 100” books that multiple districts have banned and could be banned statewide, she said.

“They’re using a sledgehammer where a scalpel is called for,” she said.

Horsley, who also sits on the Granite School District’s sensitive review committee, said the law is clear when it comes to sexually explicit material.

“I’m telling you, some of this content is in fact pornographic and is in violation of the law,” he said.

Same books restricted in Davis School District

Meanwhile, another school district to the north — Davis School District — has also recently pulled the some of the same previously retained books, including “An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” “The Kite Runner,” “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” according to its book  challenge tracker  posted on its website.

Anti-book ban advocacy group  Let Davis Read  said it tracked at least 17 books that were recently removed or limited to only kids in high school “without explanation.”

Books including “An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” “The Kite Runner,” and “Bodies Are Cool” by Tyler Feder “appear to have been initially retained but removed quietly after someone appealed DSD’s initial decision,” the group wrote in an April 3  news release , accusing Davis School District of lacking transparency and violating its own policy by not posting enough details about recent decisions and their rationale.

For example, Davis School District’s website shows a review committee initially determined “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” did not contain sensitive material as defined by Utah law, but on March 29 the book was removed in response to an appeal. As of Friday, no rationale was given for that decision on the district’s website.

In response to a request for comment from Davis School District, spokesperson Christopher Williams issued a prepared statement saying, “Our intent is to be fully compliant with law and policy and provide as much transparency as possible.”

“All decisions for the retention and removal of books are accurately posted on the district website,” Williams said, though he noted the school district is still working on updating the site with more information. “Some of those decisions were posted prior to policy changes and/or appeal process decisions, and we are actively working to update the supporting rationale statements posted online so they will be reflective of the posted decisions.”

In the meantime, it’s unclear how many of those books could fall under HB29’s “objective sensitive material” definition and could therefore be banned statewide if enough school districts make matching determinations.

Ahead of HB29’s effective date July 1, “we are anxiously awaiting” the state school board’s updated rules, Williams said, “and will be adjusting our policy as needed to be compliant with the provisions outlined in the bill when the law goes into effect.”

Are there unintended consequences of ‘sensitive materials’ laws?

Let Davis Read co-founder Jessica Horton, said she also worries about the latest batch of pulled titles and the possibility of statewide book bans under HB29. She noted most books that some are worried about are already not in elementary schools, but have been allowed in junior high and high school libraries.

“Some of these books may make some parents feel uncomfortable, but feeling uncomfortable doesn’t automatically mean something meets the legal definition of pornography or obscenity,” she said. “And one person’s discomfort should not dictate policy for an entire school district or state.”

She said it’s problematic to “cherry pick passages” that are perhaps the “worst moment” of a book then judge the entire book by those passages.

“We don’t give kids enough credit,” she said, arguing “kids are smart. They know and can think critically, and they can see, ‘Oh, this book is more than just the worst moment of this book.'”

Horton pointed to “An Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” arguing it discusses masturbation without going into too much detail. Though some people see masturbation as a topic that shouldn’t be discussed at all, it’s also something many teenage boys experience, she said.

She also pointed to “The Kite Runner,” which tells the story of a boy whose life is upturned when violence overtakes Afghanistan.  Common Sense Media  describes it as a “beautiful, moving novel (that) deals with complex adult issues.” It also includes graphic descriptions of cruelty and violence, including homosexual rape, murder, beatings and a suicide attempt.

Horton said many of the books that Davis County School District has banned or limited deal with sexual assault and rape, and she argued discussing or depicting those topics  shouldn’t be automatically considered “porn.”

Though the books discuss controversial and difficult topics, Horton said there’s value in allowing students access to literary works that can help them understand hard realities. For example, Horton said she was sexually assaulted when she was 19, “and I didn’t realize what happened to me until several years later,” after she learned the definition of sexual assault and she read  “Speak”  by Laurie Halse Anderson, about a girl who was raped at a party and her healing process.

“I was like, ‘Oh. That’s what happened to me. That’s why I’ve been struggling so much.’ … And that opened the gateway to me having the language to describe what happened to me and realize what happened to me was wrong. The feelings I have about this are valid, and I’m experiencing trauma.”

Horton said she worries about harming students by “taking away the power that words have because we’re afraid. I think we don’t realize that when we take away words, we’re taking away people’s ability to express themselves and to find meaning, healing and hope.”

“Sensitive materials” laws proponents and lawmakers including Ivory have argued they’re not overly restricting access — noting if students really want to read those books they can buy them at Barnes and Noble or on Amazon. But Horton said “not everybody can buy books, and that’s privileging certain students who have the means to buy books.”

“It just breaks my heart. Because I know kids who have struggled … and books have saved their lives. Books have saved my life. And we’re taking away those tools, that language, we’re taking away the ability for kids to find the things they need to heal. And we’re doing a disservice to everybody in the community when we do that.”

School districts await statewide book ban list as Utah plans to retroactively enforce new law

The utah state board of education is still determining how the state’s new book ban law can be applied retroactively. but a plan drafted this week offers a glimpse into how the process could work..

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Librarian Debbie Montgomery adds books to school library shelves at Desert Sky Elementary in Eagle Mountain on Monday, Aug. 21, 2023. The Utah State Board of Education is still determining how the state's new book ban law can be applied retroactively. But a plan drafted this week offers a glimpse into how the process could work.

Since Utah’s sweeping sensitive materials law took effect in 2022, certain school districts and public charters throughout the state have individually decided to ban over 262 books from their shelves.

Now, those local decisions could lead to books being banned from every public school in the state, under a new law that takes effect July 1 and applies retroactively.

“Please be aware that at this time, no material has been removed statewide,” the Utah State Board of Education said in an email sent to superintendents and charter directors Tuesday.

But that could soon change — once school board leaders figure out how exactly to apply the new law retroactively.

The problem: All those previous book ban decisions were based on statewide guidance outlined in the 2022 law. The new book ban law introduces brand new guidance, which must be adhered to in order for books to be banned statewide.

And that statewide ban only happens if at least three school districts (or at least two school districts and five charter schools) decide to ban a title based on the new guidance.

Determining whether or not past book ban decisions jive with the new statewide guidance is no easy task . USBE is still in the early stages of formulating the process — an initial plan was drafted this week.

But once it’s finalized, USBE expects to disclose a list of all retroactively banned books to districts and charters as early as August.

Revisiting — and reviewing — previous book bans

The new statewide guidance asks local education leaders to evaluate whether a challenged book amounts to “objective” sensitive material — pornographic or otherwise indecent material, as defined by Utah code.

A book could also be considered “subjective” sensitive material, which may not meet the state’s definition of pornography or “indecent public displays,” but would otherwise be considered “harmful” to youth .

In that case, the book could still be removed from local shelves, but the statewide book ban threshold only applies to “objective” sensitive material.

The proposed administrative rule meant to outline how previous book bans could retroactively apply to the new statewide book ban law instructs schools to perform an “initial review” of all materials removed prior to July 1.

For some districts, like the Washington County School District, that may mean revisiting more than 50 titles that it has already banned, according to an analysis by The Salt Lake Tribune.

The initial review is meant to determine whether or not the material constitutes “objective” or “subjective” sensitive material — even if the original decision to remove the book did not consider the newly required distinction. The draft rule states that two local employees would be responsible for that determination.

School districts and charters would only have 30 days after July 1 to conduct these “initial reviews” and report their determinations to USBE, according to the draft rule.

USBE would then compile those determinations and communicate to schools by Aug. 5 which titles have met the statewide removal threshold, the draft rule states.

Option for USBE to intervene

Even if enough school districts or charter schools determine a book is “objectively” sensitive, USBE still has the ability to intervene before a statewide book ban goes into effect.

To do so, the state school board needs to hold a hearing within 60 days of the threshold being met.

But under the plan to retroactively enforce the new law, USBE leaders only have 30 days from that time to meet and decide whether to keep the title on certain shelves.

If no hearing is held, the statewide removal stands.

Moving forward, until July 1, schools “should continue to follow their current policies and operate within existing laws, rules and policies until further guidance is offered,” USBE advised this week.

Charters and districts would otherwise have until Sept. 1 to revise their current sensitive material policies to adhere to the new state requirements, according to the draft rule.

The draft rule could still see revisions, but officials said it will be presented to the state school board in May for final approval.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Two years ago, Democrats repeatedly and forcefully warned Republicans and Gov. Ron DeSantis that a new law making it easier to challenge school books was so broadly worded that it would create havoc across the state.

Now they can say, “I told you so.”

DeSantis backtracked on the 2022 law on Tuesday when he signed a bill narrowing its focus. He blamed liberal activists for abusing the law, not the citizens whose objections to certain books account for the majority of book removals from school libraries and classrooms.

“The idea that someone can use the parents rights and the curriculum transparency to start objecting to every single book to try to make a mockery of this is just wrong,” DeSantis said the day before the bill signing. “That’s performative. That’s political.”

Coincidentally, PEN America, a group that fights book bans, issued a report Tuesday saying Florida is responsible for 72% of the books that have been pulled from the nation’s schools in the first half of the current school year.

The organization said liberal activists are not the ones who should be blamed for abusing the law.

“The majority of books that we see being removed are books that talk about LBTQ+ identities, that include characters of color, that talk about race and racism, that include depictions of sexual experiences in the most broadest interpretation of that understanding,” said Kasey Meehan, Pen America’s Freedom to Read program director.

Those challenges are being made by conservative individuals and groups such as Moms For Liberty, Meehan said.

The original law allowed any person — parent or not, district resident or not — to challenge books as often as they wanted. Once challenged, a book has to be pulled from shelves until the school district resolves the complaint. The new law limits people who don’t have students in a school district to one challenge per month.

The PEN America report says Florida is responsible for 3,135 of the 4,349 school book bans in the United States so far this school year. Just this week in conservative Clay County, one person challenged 40 books, Meehan said.

Before dropping out of the Republican presidential primary , DeSantis campaigned heavily on his education platform, including the law giving people more power to challenge books.

“It’s just a big mess that DeSantis created and now he’s trying to disown it, but I don’t know if he’ll be able to distance himself from this because he campaigned on it so hard,” said House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell.

It’s not the only example of the tough-talking governor having to make adjustments to ideology he championed while seeking the White House.

He also has made concessions in the settlement of several lawsuits involving the state and Walt Disney World. The dispute between them erupted in 2022 after the company spoke out against a DeSantis-backed law that opponents dubbed “Don’t Say Gay.” The law bans classroom lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation.

The Associated Press asked DeSantis’ office for examples of liberal activists abusing the law and it provided one: Chaz Stevens, a South Florida resident who has often lampooned government. Stevens raised challenges in dozens of school districts over the Bible, dictionaries and thesauruses.

The change to the law “ensures that book challenges are limited for individuals, like Chaz, who do not have children with access to the school district’s materials,” DeSantis spokeswoman Julia Friedland said in an email. She didn’t reply to follow-up emails requesting more examples.

Stevens, who 11 years ago made national news when he installed a Festivus pole made out of beer cans across from a nativity scene displayed in the Capitol, was delighted DeSantis’ office singled him out.

“When they need to make stupid stupider, they send me up. I’m part comedian, I’m part activist, I’m part artist. I just want a better society,” Stevens said. “I’m an idiot, but a smart guy at the same time.”

While DeSantis’ predecessor, current Republican Sen. Rick Scott, allowed what was then called the “free speech zone” in the Capitol rotunda, the rules changed under DeSantis and new barriers were put in place to use Capitol space for political expression. The League of Women Voters and Stevens are among the applicants who have been denied access under the new rules.

“I didn’t realize that I have the power of millions!” Stevens said. “I’m just one guy. I’m an agitator. I know my role in this.”

Driskell pointed out that DeSantis was warned there would be problems when the book ban law passed in 2022.

“We told him so. The Florida House Democrats on the floor — in our debate, in our questioning — pointed out the vagueness in the original law and how it could be subject to abuse,” she said. “Chaz is not the problem. It’s the folks who are taking liberties with the law who are the problem.”

‘Boys in the Boat’ author to speak at UW commencement

Daniel James Brown, author of the bestselling “The Boys in the Boat,” which tells the story of the 1936 University of Washington men’s rowing team, will deliver the university’s 2024 commencement address, UW announced Tuesday.

The 2013 novel inspired a feature film by the same name, which was released last December and propelled the story of “grit, determination and community support” to global audiences , the university said online .

Through his novel, Brown “brought a treasured piece of Pacific Northwest and UW history to life and inspired people all over the world,” university President Ana Mari Cauce said in the announcement.

At the June 8 ceremony, Brown will receive an honorary degree from UW for his impact on scholarship in the humanities. He earned a bachelor’s degree from University of California, Berkeley, and a master of arts from UCLA.

“The upcoming commencement ceremony is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to express my gratitude to the university for all that it does to cultivate the arts and humane values in our community and the wider world,” Brown said.

Brown continues to write from his home near Seattle, UW said in its announcement.

“The Boys in the Boat,” which tells the story of the Depression-era rowing team that overcame seemingly impossible obstacles and stunned the world by winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, has received a number of awards, including the American Library Association’s Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. The book has been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Brown’s other books, including “Facing the Mountain” and “The Indifferent Stars Above,” also focus on pivotal moments in history that are often overlooked, according to the university.

UW will also recognize MIT atmospheric chemist Susan Solomon at the ceremony for what the university called her pioneering research on ozone depletion and the chemistry of the stratosphere.

The ceremony takes place Saturday, June 8, at Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium.

Attendees get up to 19 continuing education credits, networking opportunities, case resolution, advice on practice management and more

IR-2024-117, April 22, 2024

WASHINGTON — The IRS encourages tax professionals to register now for the 2024 IRS Nationwide Tax Forum , coming this summer to Chicago, Orlando, Baltimore, Dallas and San Diego.

The Nationwide Tax Forum is the IRS’s largest annual outreach event designed and produced for the tax professional community. This year’s agenda will feature more than 40 sessions on tax law and ethics as well as hot topics like beneficial ownership information, cybersecurity, tax scams and schemes, digital assets and clean energy credits.

Enrolled agents, certified public accountants, Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) participants and other tax professionals can earn up to 19 continuing education (CE) credits. A complete listing of seminar courses will be available in May.

IRS transformation: A historic time

Attendees at the forums will also learn how the IRS is evolving to meet their needs and those of their clients. The IRS is continuing to make changes across the agency as part of its transformation work under the Strategic Operating Plan , which is made possible with funding from the Inflation Reduction Act.

“This is a historic time at the IRS, with change taking place across the agency with our ongoing transformation work,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “This summer you’ll have a chance to learn more about these changes. We encourage you to register soon. Some of these locations will fill up quickly.”

See Werfel’s YouTube video inviting tax professionals to the 2024 forums.

Locations and registration details

The following is the 2024 Nationwide Tax Forum lineup:

Attendees who act by the June 17 early bird deadline can take advantage of the lowest registration rate of $255 per person. Standard pricing of $309 begins on June 17 and ends two weeks before the start of each forum. Onsite registration is also available at a cost of $390.

Please note, members of the following associations can save $10 on their registration:

  • American Bar Association (ABA)
  • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
  • National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA)
  • National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP)
  • National Society of Accountants (NSA)
  • National Society of Tax Professionals (NSTP)

Members should contact their association directly for a tax forum discount code.

Forum highlights

Attendees get more than continuing education when they attend the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum. Here are some additional benefits for attendees:

Exhibit hall – In addition to the seminars, the forums also feature a two-day expo with representatives from tax, financial and business communities offering their products, services and expertise designed with the tax professional in mind. Inside the exhibit hall, attendees can visit the IRS Zone to share their perspectives with IRS representatives and to learn more about the IRS’s vision for transformation and digitalization.

Case Resolution Program – Tax professionals can once again bring their toughest unresolved IRS case to the Case Resolution Program room. IRS representatives with specialized expertise will be available to meet one-on-one with tax professionals (by appointment only). A new addition to the 2024 IRS Tax Forum will be the ability to book an appointment with TAS case resolution in advance. Because of the popularity of the program, tax professionals can bring only one client case per meeting with IRS representatives in the Case Resolution Program. For complete details including what tax professionals need to bring to the appointment, visit the case resolution information page.

En español – This year the IRS is increasing the number of Spanish-language seminar courses available to attendees. Details will be provided next month in the seminar course list. Also, see the Spanish practice management offering below.

Hiring – Curious about career paths at the IRS? IRS hiring staff will be on hand to talk with attendees about jobs currently open in examination and other areas across the agency.

Monday pre-forum activities – Attendees arriving early can maximize their time at the Tax Forum by participating in additional events. On Monday, IRS partner associations NATP and NSTP will offer an optional annual filing season refresher course for participants in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program.

Following that, at 5 p.m., IRS partners will present a 90-minute panel discussion on practice management . Experts from the NAEA, NATP, NSA, NSTP and Padgett Business Services will present ideas on how new, as well as established tax professionals can attract and manage customers, increase productivity and have a more satisfying work-life balance. A Spanish-language version of the panel will be presented at 7 p.m.

National Taxpayer Advocate town hall – Meet National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins on Wednesday during the forum networking reception to discuss issues facing taxpayers and tax practitioners. The Taxpayer Advocate wants to hear from tax pros and learn about issues facing taxpayers and practitioners. Includes Q&A.
