Dubai has about 1.2 million people and out of this population, 13% are locals while the rest comes from other parts of the world. The most spoken language in this city is Arabic however Hindi, Urdu and English are also popular languages.

One of the reasons as to why Dubai has become a popular travelers’ destination is due to the presence of some of fine hotels found in this city. These hotels are among the finest hotels in the world and tourists enjoy residing in them when they are visiting Dubai. This reputation is sent back to all corners of the world giving this city popularity of its own kind.

Burj Al Arab is a landmark in Dubai; it is 321 meters high hotel and constructed in shape of a sailing ship which makes every one marvel at its beauty. It is a seven star hotel; the only of its kind in the world. The rooms in this hotel are well-decorated and also well-equipped with modern facilities.

Dubai: While Expo 2020 Dubai is set to be a great propeller for tourists to visit the city, expat residents living in Dubai tell us why they love the city. They also reveal their favourite spots, so new visitors don’t miss out on them.

An empire built from the desert

Lizan Gray, a South African account manager for a public relations firm, said: “Dubai is a city where you go through a day, meeting people of five to 10 different nationalities. This city has built an empire from the desert. There’s a lot that other countries can learn from Dubai.”

Gray particularly loves to visit Al Qudra. “It is the most touristic spot. It’s one of those gems that many tourists miss but residents love.”

She says the city offrs a healthy mix of cuisines too. “I love Downtown and Garhoud because of the amazing places to eat. I also think Fujiya is an amazing Japanese restaurant as is Akio,” Gray added.

Second home to expats

Indian expat Arjun Raman, a banker, said many expats like him call Dubai their second home. “Dubai ensures that it is always a few steps ahead of its worldly peers,” he said.

Raman loves to head to Koko Bay and its beach-facing cafes and restaurants in West Palm Jumeirah and Bluewater Islands. He also loves to visit the Dubai Creek Yacht Club.

“Dubai offers the best nightlife whether at Armani Prive, Cavalli Club or any other venue.”

Great leadership

Filipina expat Pamela Angela Tumolva, a 39-year-old account manager, loves Dubai because of its great leaders. “The leaders of the city and the UAE are visionary. They make us feel safe and secure to live here," she said. “Dubai is my second home, my home away from home. It gives expatriates like me an opportunity to fulfill my aspirations in life. This opportunity enables me to better support my family back home,” she added.

She loves the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa. “For me, the Burj Al Arab Is the most iconic and classic spot in Dubai. Burj Khalifa is Dubai’s pride that symbolises strength and might.”

Options galore for a visit

Syrian expat Mohammad Diab, a media relations executive, said the diversity in cultures and Dubai’s beaches have hooked him to the city. “I like to spend time at the Kite Beach and La Mer. The older areas of Dubai like the Gold Souq, Al Shindagha, Bastakiya, Karama are treasures. There is so much history there. Hatta too is getting famous among tourists and residents. And how can we forget the malls that add so much value to Dubai?” Diab said.

He added that Dubai is a melting pot of cultures and a place like Global Village exemplifies this best.

Water park attractions

For Pakistani expat Mariam Mumtaz, a marketing professional, the Aquaventure Waterpark in Atlantis is a major attraction. “I can go there in the summers and in the winters just to hop form one slide to another. The most popular water sport here is the Leap of Faith that is 60 feet high. The free fall is super-exhilarating. I would say all waterparks in Dubai are thrilling and full of excitement. The Dubai Ice Rink, Aquarium and Underwater Zoo and the latest Infinity des Lumieres, a digital art museum, are all must places to visit, not just for visitors but residents too,” she added.

A safe haven with so much to see

Egyptian national Reem Ibrahim, who works as a communications executive for a Dubai firm, said Dubai provides a safe haven for its visitors and residents. “No matter what your culture or tradition is, Dubai is a welcoming place. It also offers a huge variety of locations, activities and lifestyles that suit each and everyone’s lifestyle. You have unlimited options for everything, depending on what you want,” she added.

Ibrahim said the deserts in Dubai are a major attraction for her. “They are my go-to spot in winter. You will find people staying up till the sunrise just enjoying each other’s company.”

She added that Dubai Mall is another major tourist spot for visitors. “It attracts people from all over the world. Whether it is to watch the world’s biggest dancing fountain or the world’s tallest building or experience the beauty of the underwater wonders at the aquariam,” said Ibrahim.

A city full of life

Syrian expat Zeina Mathbout, a 27-year-old social media manager, loves Downtown Dubai as it reflects the fast-paced lifestyle of Dubai. She said: “Dubai is a vibrant city full of life. The air is positive and give people a chance to realise their hopes and dreams. It’s a hub that offers a variety of activities and houses famous attractions like Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, the dancing fountain. I love to walk on the beautifully-lit boulevard of this area.”

Mathbout also frequents the Bluewaters Island. “It is such a beautiful spot to visit with many entertainment, leisure and dining options. It is also home to Ain Dubai, the world’s largest observation wheel [set to open soon]. Dubai is a truly unique city that is immensely diverse with residents from different cultures. It is dynamic and vibrant and there is never a dull moment in Dubai with many attractions to visit and things to do.”

People from all the country, all ethnicity, all religion , all traditions, all culture . Dubai is a place where you can enjoy the full freedom you feel as if you are in your home country. Thanks to His Majesty the Ruler of UAE for maintaining such better relationship of the world population there. This type of culture and freedom you can never expect from any country in the World. I always enjoy visiting Dubai. I get to do my shopping in the nice big malls and I also enjoy the sun and the sea... This time however I was let a bit down. The prices in the Malls cannot be considered "a deal" anymore. I have checked quite a few items only to realize that they are now cheaper to buy at home... so there goes that myth of a shopper’s paradise. However what really made me sad was the condition on the beaches of Jumeira. Last year I visited with my family the Jumeira Beach Park. It had one of the clearest and bluest waters I ever saw. Unfortunately this was not the case of last week. The waters were of a grey green color and the was this green stuff (not sure how it's called in English). Out in the open there was a big tanker ship that was pumping something out into the water and there was black smoke coming out its funnels... My friends that live and work in Dubai told me that this is the case in a lot of the beaches... This is so sad, I guess that's what you get when you tamper so much with the nature... overbuilding and interfering with the sea by building fake islands...

To all of you who are being so excited to go n see Dubai; I've lived there for a year n a half, n telling u the truth, the media played a big role in making Dubai the most beautiful city, its all bull [--], u can see NO culture in this city, very hard to meet its local people as they are all travelling around the world or driving thier fancy cars, will not even look at you, weather sucks, became very expensive, u have to spend alot to see a little....wouldnt recommend it to anyone to go for a visit, but for work....YES, good money there....

What a shock walking out of the airport just over a week ago 4th Aug 08. The air is likened to an oven being opened to get the roast potatoes out. It is such a shock at the airport when you leave the building there are large fans with water jets spraying with the fanned air. Yes it is a building site but exciting and mezmerizing. Emirates Mall has everything but the prices are slightly more expensive than home. Monsoon, Debenhams have uk labels with pounds on them with Dirhams on stickers so you can compare. Snow dome part of the Mall worth a look if nothing else. Carrefour super market also at the mall. Go to the Souks to find your bargains but use a taxi not a private hire. Taxis are very fair and all metered only for distance not waiting. Next year the metros may well be ready. Spice souk across the creek excellent and leads on to the gold souk and textile souks. We were told there were outlets just outside town but no time to go. Use a boat taxi (1 Dirham) to get back to the town side where taxis are easier to get. Dubai airport was busier at 1am than 2pm which seemed wierd but bargains to be had. Flash memory for digital cameras cheap 1GB £8 You will be pestered to buy watches, handbags and sunglasses. Most shops have hidden compartments upstairs with the designer copies that are sought by the real manufacturers. Those designers that are not proactive in finding copies are downstairs. Barter but you may only get about 30% off the starting price. We bought Kaftans in black and white for 100dir and 155dir 100dir is £14. Lots of aladdins caves type places. Food in our hotel excellent in the 2 rests we ate in. One & only Mirage. Pork missing from menu but no real loss. Fast food just like home if you want it but plenty to choose from if you don't. We did not have time for dune buggy fun but fellow tourists told us it was good fun and safe. Would definitely go again but watch your medicines and painkillers some are illegal in Dubai and you face prison. Check their website.

Dubai.........city which is growing with extreme pace.....Having been there in 1987, I was already amazed by Gold souk (market), beautiful sand beach, luxurious hotels and Arab world. Then , coming there in 2006 I was a bit disappointed, as I had been listening to stories about Dubai and its developments. When I arrived, of course I could not recognize anything from 20 years ago, but I somehow expected more. A very good publicity was made for this Middle Eastern, i.e. Gulf region and especially Dubai, its most liberal place to be. I expected Las Vegas shine on streets, of course without any gambling (as it is banned by religion). I am having opportunity to spend some time here, and I follow some developments going on since 2006, like Burj Dubai, tallest free standing buidling at the moments, constructing the first metro line, Palm and World islands etc. It is extreme what the Arabs here and its ruler are promising to the world! Naturally they are late with some of those developments, so who knows actually when they would finish and if. I should return back in 10 years, and I am sure that I wouldn't recognize some parts of the city or buidlings. Actually, I would like to check if all they were promising eventually came true. You never know with Arabs! I must highlight what is amazing to me still: Burj Al Arab, the sail-looling 7 star hotel, which is lit in diffrent colours at night, and I can not stop admiring it everytime I pass in car near it. There is Medinat Jumeirah, man-made Venice looking complex, great for tourists. But all in all, this city, its every green area, flower parks etc. are artifically made there. Nothing can grow in sand, so they really invest huge amount of money on watering underground. Due to a very hot climate, main socializing place is a shopping mall or smoking shisha (water pipe) in some of the oriental cafes. You can visit all there is in 3-4 days, plus having a trip into desert, or small excursion to Oman. At the end, living here is based on shopping malls, supermarket chains. If you come in season time, you can enjoy some beach time as well, if you do not mind Indian, Pakistani and Russian majority population on the public beach. Hotel beches are much better, but if you are not their guest, they can be very expensive. Or you can shop, shop, shop......Check the shopping festival periods in the winter and summer! Finally, this city is the most contrasting city I have seen so far. On one side you have extremely rich Arabs in the best cars in the world, and shopping being their major hobby, while on the other side there are extremely poor workers, sales people, taxi drivers....all from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India. Some of them are forced to live for work, and work for living....With no choice-which is the lowest of lows. It is sad seeing it on daily basis. Major population in Dubai are Indians, and the above mentioned, as well as Phillipinos, Lebanese, Egyptians, British, South Africans and Australians. You should definitely pay the visit to Dubai now, as it is a popular destination. I just gave a bigger picture, due to my longer stay here than just a visitor for a week. Looking forward to hearing other's views.

Short Paragraph on my Favorite Place in the world: Dubai

I have been fascinated by the beauty of this planet but my favorite place is my home. I have been at many countries and cities. In fact, a couple of years ago, I visited Dubai. Everyone knows how beautiful is Dubai but I missed my hometown and particularly my home. To my mind, nothing can beat the solace and peace of one’s home. The comfort and relaxation one gets in one’s home cannot be replaced by anything else in the world. While at home, I can cook my favorite cuisines. I can enjoy watching television while sitting comfortably on my couch. My house has a small garden and I have grown some vegetables and flowers in it and it is pleasure seeing them growing and blossoming. In short, I love my house more than anything else in the world.

When we think about the prefect dream holidays, probably the first destination that comes to our mind is the place with lot of scenic beauty a paradise, an escape of choice, where we can relax and spend the holidays in peace and enjoy to the ultimate, the way we want. Some prefer locales shining with turquoise waters, sun, sand and the beaches. A few prefer places that will have adventurous locales, high treks and breathtaking challenges.

Holiday destinations can vary from travelers to traveler. I have come across many kinds of travelers with varied choices of destinations.A section prefers sky scrapers and high rise skyline. Gigantic manmade structures, luxurious hotels and destinations that give choices for a frivolous shopping spree. Like shop till you drop!

Dubai is a destination of choice of many tourists .Contrary to rumors, Dubai has more to offer than concrete. Yes it doesn’t have Versailles or the Colosseum of Rome, but it has the biggest skyscraper on the planet an innovative piece of architecture and that’s pretty amazing too! It’s really amazing to know how incredibly fast the city has grown and has caught up as a tourist destination. 40 years ago there was nothing here, and now you have one of the biggest metropolis on earth!

Dubai, known as the entertainment capital of the Middle East, is a city full of greatness, galleries showcasing contemporary Arabic art, cozy teahouses, crowded souks filled with gold, spices and fine Emirati cuisine, a sleek metro that zips through the sky like something out of Blade Runner, man-made islands, giant shopping malls, indoor ski, water parks, clubs and bars, desert, luxury hotels, fountain shows… well there’s a thousand things to do in Dubai.

One of my favorite things about Dubai is the weather… it’s always summer. Best time to visit is during October-March, when temperatures are cool, surprisingly it only rains six days in Dubai !!

If you’re heading here for sun, sea and sand, spring and autumn is the ideal time to visit Dubai, when you can bronze your body by day and cool down after dark.

Cost wise summer is the cheapest time to visit Dubai, but get ready to burn! Temperatures can easily go over 50 degrees Celsius in July and August.

There are couple of things that attract the attention of the tourists in Dubai .A few places that cannot be just mentioned but have to be experienced .The cuisines that can be relished than discussed .That’s Dubai.

Dubai is a city and Emirate in the United Arab Emirates. It is the most populous city In UAE.It is located in the south coast of the Persian Gulf and the capital of Emirates is Dubai. It is one of the seven emirates that make up the country. It is known for luxury shopping, ultramodern architecture and a lively nightlife scene. The sight catcher is none other than Burj Khalifa, an 830m-tall tower, which dominates the skyscraper-filled skyline. At its foot lies Dubai Fountain, with jets and lights choreographed to music. On artificial islands just offshore is Atlantis, The Palm, a resort with water and marine-animal parks.A place for movie shootings and stars.

There are a few strict laws that need to be followed in Dubai, no matter what. Following a dress code and being dress modest is one of the few to name. Dubai is safe for women travelers. Women are permitted to drive, live and lead a liberal life style.

Top few things without which Dubai trip is incomplete are.

1. THE BURJ KHALIFA

It’s the wonder of the modern technology that gives a stunning view of the entire Dubai. It is the tallest structure on the planet. The Burj Khalifa has an observation deck on the 134 th floor basically to look everywhere .The best time to take pictures from The Burj Khalifa is during the sunset. This can be seen from a long distance when you are about to land Dubai .A piece of architectural marvel.

2. DUBAI MALL

When we talk about shopping, Dubai is the destination of choice of all the travelers. There are dozens of shopping malls, markets and souks in Dubai. The most talked about is the Dubai Mall, the largest shopping center in the world with more than 1,000 stores and a giant Aquarium with an underwater zoo. Walking is no where denied so just make sure you use comfortable shoes… if you get tired you can also get a golf car taxi, how fabulous is that?

3. THE DUBAI FOUNTAIN

Dubai is the place where vision doesn’t rest. Right next to Dubai Mall you will find the Dubai Fountain. The light show starts from 6:00 in the evening and goes every half an hour .There are many restaurants that are lined near it .Souk AL Bahar-The Mango tree to name a few. There are many food joint bordering it where you can relish mouth watering food and enjoy the shows away from the crowd

4. BURJ AL ARAB

The Dubai Landmark, the 7 starts hotel Burj Al Arab. Truth is, you can’t officially go higher than five. The seven-star rating may be an urban myth that got out of hand, but nothing dominates the Dubai skyline and tourists’ imagination quite like it. The prices to enjoy the luxury are exorbitant. One cannot imagine spending 1800€ for a night as a tourist least you are enthusiastic about it. But you can actually go inside for an afternoon tea, the cost is “only” 155€. Fortunately, you can see from outside without paying nothing!

5. PALM JUMEIRAH

The most mind boggling and audacious mega project of Dubai. Palm Jumeirah, It is the world’s largest man –made island that extends the Dubai’s shoreline to a total of 520 kilometers. It was originally considered as the Eighth wonder of the world and along the Great Wall of China. It is the only structure that is created by man that you can see from the space. Palm Jumeirah, which looks like a stylized palm tree from above. In Palm Jumeirah you will find the famous The Atlantis Resort, it worth a visit, maybe to have lunch and get startled with the huge aquarium with whales.

For the travelers who like water parks with thrill and adventure Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah has a water park. Aquaventure ,which is probably the most thrilling one in Dubai. It includes the Leap of Faith, a near-vertical 90ft water slide, down which you whoosh into a tunnel that runs through a shark-filled lagoon. Gentler alternatives include swimming with dolphins in a series of seven interconnected pools, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls in the shopping mall through which you can watch 65,000 marine creatures glide among sunken streets and relics. Atlantis offers many more reasons for you not to leave, including boutiques, 2km of pristine beach, 18 bars, restaurants, a nightclub and a spa. You name it and you have it Palm Jumeirah is a destination to visit in itself and spend a luxurious fun filled time with family and friends.

6. JUMEIRAH BEACH

Dubai is a destination with shores lining it so beaches are travelers delight as well .Near Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach is the number one beach destination for Dubai visitors. This is the most popular places for the tourists to stay. There are hotels strung out all along the length. The beach has excellent facilities with plenty of sun loungers, restaurants and water-sport operators offering jet skiing. Near Burj Al Arab also ,you can find Jumeirah Beach Park with its small coffee shop and approx.AED 5 (1€) entrance fee, or the free stretch of sand running the length of Umm Suqeim, known as Kite Beach due to its popularity with the city’s kite-surfers. Dubai offers a lot to its tourist than mere tall buildings and shopping malls. It gives a urbanized holiday option for the travelers who wish to avail best of both the worlds.

Travelling with your little ones, and ever wondered that in the land of desert you will mesmerize them with the snow and chillness down the spine. Located on Emirates Mall, Ski Dubai is the Middle East’s first indoor ski center. Whether you’re a newbie or a pro, Ski Dubai offers an amazing setting to enjoy skiing, snowboarding or just playing in the snow. From tube slides, slopes and jumps to a 3,000-meter interactive Snow Park and Zip Wire, this is an indoor ski resort that has it all. Its again an architectural wonder that gives Dubai a snow capped address in the midst of hot desert.

8. DUBAI MARINA

Destination Dubai is place to relish on the Arab delicacies like now where else. The huge magnificent sky scrapers and the incredible tall high rise give Dubai a place next to Las Vegas. Dubai Marina, It’s a great place to take a walk and a drink at night. na Dubai Marina offers hundred of restaurants, shops, etc. The WOW! factor just doesn’t stop counting .While your walk down the Dubai Marina you can sight the one of its kind, twisting Cayan Tower. Want to go a little topsy turvey then just don´t forget to smoke Arabian shisha (hubbly bubbly pipes), cherry is my favorite.

9. DUBAI CREEK

Dubai Creek is a saltwater creek located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Previously it extended to Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary but as part of the new Dubai canal it extends through to the Persian Gulf. Running through the heart for the city Dubai creek segregates Dubai into two towns with Deira to the north and Bur Dubai to the south. The retro look is evident in every nook and corner of the creek. Dubai creek has been very prominent in the growth of the city. first attracting settlers here to fish and pearl dive. Small villages grew up alongside the creek as far back as 4,000 years ago, while the modern era began in the 1830s when the Bani Yes tribe settled in the area. To travel across the creek you can either take a trip on one of the many dhows that have been restored as tourist cruise boats or take an abra (small wooden ferry) between the ferry points on the creek’s Bur Dubai and Deira banks. Old-style buildings that reflect rich Arabian hospitality, traditional style wooden dhows, and bustling souks – all make Dubai Creek a must-visit landmark of the city

10. DEIRA SOUKS

Souks are none other than the vibrant market places in Dubai that reflect the tradition and culture of Dubai.Deira is most famous for its traditional souks (markets), which bustle with shoppers at all times of the day. We have always associated Dubai with the yellow shine. Here in Deira Gold Souk you will find really cheap gold, but you’ll have to haggle for it. Whether or not you’re ready to buy, a stroll through the dazzling Gold Souk is a must.

The way Deira Gold Souks attract the tourist there are many kind of markets like the Deira Spice Souk, where you’ll find every imaginable spice with stalls overflowing with bags of frankincense, cumin, paprika, saffron, sumac and thyme as well as the fragrant oud wood ,which is one of the rarest, expensive and precious ingredients of the perfume, rose water and incense. Not so far from Deira you’ll find Karama market, a paradise for ladies searching for fake bags.

11. SHEIK ZAYED ROAD

Urbanization is the visual treat that Dubai offers its travelers. Along with the most exotic food to the lavish resorts a fabulous beach side relaxation Dubai makes its tourist go awestruck with the Sheikh Zayed Road which is the main thoroughfare running through Dubai’s modern downtown business district. Well it and magnificent, this wide, eight-lane highway is rimmed with towering glass, chrome and steel high-rises along its length. Main attractions are along, or just off, the strip between the roundabout and the first intersection. The Courtyard Gallery (6A Street) has an excellent permanent collection focused on contemporary art from Arab artists. You should do this by subway, it’s incredible.

12. AL FAROOQ OMAR IBN AL KHATTAB MOSQUE

This is the place which exhibits the wonder of the 60 Moroccan craftsmen and is one of the most beautiful monuments in town .A Mosque to must add to the list of places to visit. This mosque is inspired by the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, The mosque is named after Umar bin Al Khattab, a companion of the Prophet Mohammed who became the second Caliph after Abu Bakr and was given the title Al Farooq, meaning someone who distinguished truth.

13. THE ARABIAN DESERT

I love the desert! This is a great activity, especially for those who are looking for some adventure. The easiest way to get at the dunes outside the city is on a four-wheel-drive safari (check out www.arabianadventures.com), it takes approximately 30 minutes from the city center to the desert. You will be able to do some camel trekking and have a delicious breakfast at the oasis. Desert Safari is a must do activity. It’s also called as Dune bashing, this excursion takes passengers are an exhilarating ride through the sand. While you can rent your own 4WD drive vehicle, hiring a professional driver allows you to get the most out of the experience. You will be picked up about 2 PM and taken to the rallying point where vehicles from all the tour companies will meet and go out together. You will usually have about a 30 minute wait. During this time, the companies will double check to their cars as young men perform driving tricks to entertain the tourists. Once the safari begins, be ready for the ride of your life. The drivers will spend about a hour and a half racing through the sand. This time will be divided between multiple exciting maneuvers such as bursting through small dunes, climbing up mountains, and speeding diagonally across the ground.

14. HELICOPTER TOUR

To get the spectacular view of Dubai a helicopter ride is offered by multiple tour operators in Dubai .It is more than interesting. It’s a privilege that one can enjoy. These aerial tours have been created keeping in mind to ensure an unforgettable experience for the entire family. Get ready to fly over Dubai. These tours encircle the huge Burj Khalifa to the world famous Burj Al Arab to the spectacular the world famous Palm Jumeirah. These helicopter tours give you an unobstructed view of the Dubai in well appointed helicopters .These tours take off from Dubai Marina Helipad and one can choose from a 12 minutes tour to a 22 minutes tour.

A destination of world class amenities, exotic locales and spectacular adventures travelling to Dubai is a choice that one should not miss to explore.

My Favorite Countries in the World (from a traveler who’s been to nearly 100)

What’s your favorite country?

I get asked this question all the time.

It’s the most difficult to answer. The short answer is, I don’t have one. I have many favorites. I like different places for different reasons. In no particular order, I’ll list all of my favorites.

My Favorite Countries in the World

Greece has been on my mind since I fell in love with the island of Lesvos in 2017. After leaving Greece, I couldn’t shake it from my memory. Traveling around other Mediterranean countries the thought crossed my mind “It’s nice here, but it’s certainly not Greece.” I know that’s the wrong mentality, but hey, those are my feelings, and feelings can’t be wrong, right? So apologies to lovely Albania and Malta, but if I only had one week to live, I’d be eating souvlaki and sipping a thick Greek coffee in some vine-shaded village square somewhere in the Aegean.

Malaysia is perhaps the best food country in the world . I say that because it is home to three outstanding cuisines of its diverse population. Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine are all readily available and because of Malaysia’s eating out culture, meals are affordably priced for locals. Much of the best food is served at mom and pop cafes or from carts at food centers. But Malaysia is more than just food. Its mix of indigenous and other cultures means different customs, holidays, religions, and so on. Plus, I love the architecture of the former Straits Settlements on peninsular Malaysia ( Penang , Malacca). On Borneo, there is some nice wildlife viewing (albeit under threat from agriculture/habitat loss)

I entered into the world of Central Asia in my early twenties as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uzbekistan. While I absolutely loved my host country and its people (perhaps the world’s most hospitable) I also grew very fond of Kyrgyzstan . It’s a land of high-altitude pastures and cool, clear lakes. One of snow-capped peaks and bubbling hot springs and people willing to invite a stranger into their yurt for a cup of fermented mare’s milk. I fell in love with the landscape and culture of Spain on my first Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in 2005. I returned in 2008 for another Camino (Via de la Plata) and to stay to teach English. I ended up living there for about a year, enjoying tapas and wine after work, exploring the neighborhoods of Madrid, and getting into the rhythm of the Spanish lifestyle. The typical traveler to Spain enjoys the incredible cuisine here, the diversity of the country’s distinct regions, its rich art and architectural heritage, and the history of its small cities, towns, and villages throughout the countryside.

Spain’s neighbor to the west is another of my favorite places. You can tell I have an affinity for this part of the world. Portugal’s historical towns and cities are intriguing and its coastline is delectable . Portuguese are proud but very open to outsiders and well-educated. There’s a bit of Roman history here, some top-notch winemaking, delicious food, and thought-provoking street art. But most of all for me it’s the atmosphere of Portugal that I love most, and that’s what sticks out in my memory. I just loved being there.

South Korea

I’ve been to South Korea on several occasions. I’ve taught English there, lived there temporarily on other occasions, and explored most corners of this small mountainous peninsula. Koreans have a strong identity tied to their land, cuisine, and language . There are many distinct aspects of Korean society and the Korean people are proud of their heritage . They hold on to many of their traditions while embracing change and modernity in a fast-paced world . I may be biased because I married a Korean, but this is an intelligent society with a high quality of life.

Peru is too intriguing a place not to mention in this list. What’s so great about Peru is the diversity of experiences one can have there. You can ride a dune buggy across towering dunes, admire the work of ancient pre-Incan civilizations, surf some of the Pacific’s best waves, see an enormous array of wildlife, venture into the Amazon (which makes up a third of Peru!), and take on some of the best trekking in the Andes . Eat your way through Lima , South America’s foodie city. And did I mention Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley? Enough Inca sights and Quechua culture to take a week of your time.

I traveled for a few weeks in Syria before the civil war. What I remember most is how completely foreign everything was to me. Not even the same numbers system was used! But also I remember how welcoming people were. Syrians chatted with me, bought me lunch, and helped me find my way when I was lost. It is a country with a magnificent cultural heritage, extraordinary ruins (much of which have been destroyed in the war), a vast desert landscape, and some of the oldest inhabited cities on the planet.

The digital nomad in me fell in love with Romania and wanted to stay. Who doesn’t love affordability and lightning-fast internet ? But Romania is much more. What interests me most are the old Saxon towns and villages of Transylvania, the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains, and the folk traditions of Maramureș. Add to that some delicious Romanian food and a trip to the capital Bucharest, which has an enticing mix of architecture from numerous eras. The combination was enough for me to work remotely from Bucharest for a month and develop a small group tour to Transylvania .

The thing that everyone notices about Japan is its seamless fusion of the old and new. In addition to that, the Japanese do urban society like no one else. Japanese cities work flawlessly. They are efficient, clean, crowded, and somehow quiet. But I also love hiking in Japan’s mountains, following its pilgrim trails, soaking in its hot springs , sipping its bowls of noodles, and eating its fresh seafood catch. I am also most happy riding Japanese trains. One thing I’d like people to know is that Japan is not as expensive as they think.

There is so much packed into little Georgia : the subtropical Black Sea coast, a productive wine-country, a very intriguing and revered cuisine, ancient churches, Ottoman bathhouses, breakaway republics, mountain fortresses, and alpine hiking. One of my favorite adventures in Georgia was a trip to Svaneti, a mountainous region inhabited by the Svans, known for its stone towers. I haven’t been to Georgia since 2007, but my travels there were some of my most memorable and adventurous.

Taiwan has got a great standard of living, some of the world’s best food , easy and comfortable transportation, a rich culture, fun outdoor activities, safe cities, and very helpful and friendly residents. When you’ve got your fill of urban adventure in Taipei, head to the east coast for hiking in the mountains, soaking in hot springs, cycling through rice paddies, tasting tea, and renting a scooter for more fun. A friend invited me to stay with him in Tainan and I explored the cultural side of Taiwan, visiting lots of temples in this historic capital.

The United States

While it seems funny to list my home country after years of living and traveling outside of the USA, the diversity of geography in the world’s fourth-biggest country is staggering. I’m never a person to think “mine is best” but after traveling the world for two decades, one of my favorite places is the destination of one of my earliest vacations: the American West. The high-elevation Colorado Plateau is home to numerous National Parks, unbelievable geological land formations, dinosaur graveyards, outstanding outdoor sports, Native American cultures, and so much more. Additionally, the old-growth forests of California, Oregon, and Washington State are among the most magical places on the earth. When you’re alone, looking up in a Redwood grove, you’ll understand.

If you forced me to narrow it down to one country to call my favorite, I’d have to choose India . The diversity of this sub-continent is astonishing. You can go from crossing deserts by camel to meditating in yoga ashrams in the foothills of the Himalaya to birdwatching from boats in the backwaters of tropical Kerala. India has 122 major languages and more than 2,000 ethnic groups ! Wherever you go in India there is always something interesting to experience – and that’s why I never tire of this fascinating country. I will have never visited India enough times.

As you can see, I have a lot of favorites. This is why the question is so difficult to answer. When I travel, I look for things to love about the place – its people, history, food, or landscape. There have been very few places I’ve left thinking that I’ve never wanted to return. Here are some additional favorites that didn’t make the first cut.

Honorable Mention:

Uzbekistan – I lived in Uzbekistan for two years and crisscrossed the country countless times. Silk Road cities, good food, and the most open and hospitable people on the planet.

Nepal – The soaring Himalaya, the magnificent Himalaya, the extraordinary Himalaya. These mountains make me cry tears of joy.

Bangladesh – I think it was a week before I saw another foreigner in Bangladesh . Bangladeshis are the most friendly and enthusiastic about meeting outsiders. This trip has remained close to my heart – from tea country to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest.

Egypt – I have great memories of adventures in Egypt in 2007. Superb diving in the Red Sea, chaotic urban adventures in Cairo and Alexandria, far-out oases, and mind-blowing archeology.

Mongolia – The wide-open landscapes you’ve only dreamed about! Real living nomadic cultures, ancient Buddhist traditions, dinosaur bones, and an autumn golden eagle festival in Western Mongolia .

Italy – If you want the best of the best in Europe, it’s no contest. Italy is packed with world-class art and architecture, an incredible food culture, stunning medieval towns, ruins of ancient civilizations, and passionate Italians.

Tunisia – Old school backpacking adventures , incredible archeology, some really friendly people, and super-cheap prices.

Israel and the Palestinian Territories – Fascinating religious history, intriguing current events, and some of the tastiest food in the Middle East.

Mexico – A tremendous diversity of landscapes and cultures are packed into Mexico. And the food is world-renowned.

Colombia – Soaring mountains, two coastlines, coffee country, Amazon jungle, colonial villages, and the warmest people in South America. What more could you want?

China – Get lost on Planet China. The largest population on earth is home to hundreds of ethnic minorities, spectacular landscapes, and towns that rarely, if ever, see foreigners.

Bosnia & Herzegovina – East meets west in Europe. B & H is steeped in Ottoman history and Sarajevo and Mostar are two places you’ll never forget.

Bhutan – If you wanted to create a serene and peaceful sanctuary to be a Buddhist monk, don’t bother. It already exists. Welcome to Bhutan, last great Himalayan kingdom .

Poland – Although Poland suffered greatly in a World War tug of war between Germany and Russia, there are lovely historic cities here with great architecture. And my Slavic soul feels at home in Poland.

Switzerland – Besides the obvious – MOUNTAINS – Switzerland is the intersection of Romantic and Germanic Europe – making Switzerland a cultural and natural highlight of Europe.

Turkey – I spent about four weeks traveling around Turkey and there was still plenty more to see. Most travelers miss Eastern Turkey. Fascinating culture and people that take food very seriously.

Myanmar – Super friendly people, beautiful landscapes, and Bagan. You may not like the government, but you’ll love everything else about Myanmar. Experience the best of Myanmar on my good friend’s Un-Tour to Myanmar .

The United Kingdom – After traveling in Asia and Europe so much I appreciate being able to connect with people in the UK with the same mother tongue.

Future Favorite Countries – Places I haven’t been to yet

I’m sure there are plenty of future favorite countries out there that I just don’t know yet. The way travelers talk about some countries make me want to drop what I’m doing and book a ticket. High on my list are Iran, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Morocco, Uganda, Lesoto, Rwanda, Bolivia, Argentina, and Chile. I could include many more on this list.

My Favourite Place: Abu Dhabi

Luxury holidays to Abu Dhabi aren't often an obvious choice, as the country isn't a particularly well known destination. After a recent visit, part of me wants to keep it that way and not let it get too busy - but then I wouldn't want to be selfish...

Last week, I travelled to discover what the capital Emirate has to offer. I had been to Dubai many years ago and wasn't sure what to expect from it's neighbouring country. Conclusion? It's pretty different. The 200 or so islands are all natural, one of which, Saadiyat Island, is due to become a cultural hub, with The Louvre and Guggenheim planned for it. What's more, the beach on Saadiyat Island is eight kilometres long, and the best you'll find in Abu Dhabi.

In town, the huge Sheikh Zayed mosque houses 40,000 worshipers and boasts impressive Swarovski crystal chandeliers.

What's there to do in Abu Dhabi?

The desert is sensational, and it was definitely worth getting up at 5am to drive out into, to watch the sunrise and dune bash. The colours are unforgettable - the deep red of the iron oxide in the sand, the sea blue sky...

Activities are plentiful wherever you are; whether that's spotting the Arabian animals on Sir Bani Yas Island; falconry, archery and camel-trekking in the Empty Quarter; swinging a golf club or relaxing on the beach or in one of the numerous spas....

Ferrari World

Test your adrenalin levels at Ferrari World and the soon-to-open WaterWorld! Ferrari World is the world's largest indoor theme park, and features a host of rides and attractions, including Formula Rossa - the fastest roller coaster in the world reaching 240 km/hr in under 5 seconds!! (I did survive!).

Fabulous Food

Food is clearly important in Abu Dhabi - we ate ridiculously well throughout our stay, sampling the cuisine at the likes of Hakkasan and Marco Pierre White's Steakhouse and Grill. Scotts of Mayfair is opening shortly, too - though you don't need to go to one of these names to enjoy good food, as even the hotels' buffets (most with live kitchens) were to die for. The infamous Friday brunch (think humongous buffet starting at about 11am and going on 'til late afternoon) is seriously impressive and seriously good fun, too.

Conclusion: Abu Dhabi is the perfect destination for winter sun and for exclusive escapes - the temperature rarely dips below 22 degrees, and it's only a seven hour flight from London. So our only question is: what are you waiting for?

I'm a Palestinian startup founder. I wanted to do my part for my home country, but now we have to leave.

Mohammad Alnobani co-founded a tech startup in the West Bank in 2022.
Six months into the Israeli-Hamas war in nearby Gaza, Alnobani and his cofounder are relocating to escape the conflict.
Alnobani said he did not regret founding his company in his homeland and hopes to return someday.

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Mohammad Alnobani, 34, who cofounded "The Middle Frame," a tech startup based in Ramallah, a city in the Palestinian Territories. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

At around 1 a.m. on October 7 , I arrived in Amman, Jordan, on the way back to my home in Jerusalem from a trip to Belfast, where I attended the One Young World Summit.

I met my CTO at the airport; they were traveling to Ramallah, a Palestinian city in the West Bank. We'd decided to travel together to the borders, which opened at 8 a.m.

We got into a bus that was supposed to move between Jordan and Israel at around 8.30 a.m. Then, we were told they were closing the borders. We started checking the news. I read that Hamas got through a fence surrounding Gaza.

I was nervous as hell — whether you're pro-Palestine or pro-Israel , once you hear a major event is happening in the region, you know what's coming next is not going to be good.

We got off the bus and went back to Amman. We didn't know what to do.

I founded a tech startup in Ramallah in 2022

I was born in Saudi Arabia but grew up in Jordan. My mom is from Nablus, a city in the West Bank, and my dad grew up in Jerusalem. I moved to Jerusalem at 16 and went to university in Ramallah. After living in Qatar and London, I moved back to Jerusalem in 2019 and set up an advertising agency with my brother in 2020, which I was a part of until January 2022.

In February 2022, I set up "The Middle Frame," a stock image platform, with my business partner Raya, a photographer I met in Boston during an entrepreneurship fellowship in 2021.

Raya told me she wanted to build a platform for authentic stock images from the Middle East and North Africa.

I knew where Raya was coming from. Back when I worked in advertising, creatives always struggled to find images that accurately represented local cultures from Arab regions on international platforms like Shutterstock and Getty Images.

Over 1,800 contributors are signed up on our platform. Photographers upload their own images, which we moderate.

The Palestinian startup scene

Our business is based in Ramallah , where Raya lives. We're both familiar with the city; it's where I went to university, and half of my family lives there. It made sense cost-wise for us to work locally and set up our business there.

The Palestinian startup community is very small. I think a lot of people around the world don't know it exists. It's very easy to get into and it felt like a good environment to find our feet.

I knew there was almost no political and economic stability in the area, but as it was my home country, I felt like I had to try and do my part. If starting a company in Ramallah could benefit the community by creating jobs and further building on the small startup scene there, we wanted to try.

We wanted to onboard Palestinian team members to give them experience in a tech startup, but we had been struggling to recruit people due to the ongoing conflict.

Myself and Raya are the only two working full-time for "The Middle Frame," but we have a part-time CTO and web developer who are both Palestinian, as well as six part-timers in Egypt.

As a stock image platform, we wanted to provide local photographers with passive income from sharing their images.

We're targeting advertising agencies and media outlets that can download our images, but since the Palestinian population and market are small, we felt there was a limitation on our growth and scalability. Only a handful of companies and publications would be using the images.

We were determined to keep working despite the uncertainties caused by the conflict

During the first week after the events of October 7 , I was checking the news every day. Waking up was a struggle. People living in Europe and the US invited me to healing circles, but I wasn't ready to talk about the situation yet.

On October 9, I got on a call with Raya, who was with her family in Ramallah, and our CTO, who was with me in Jordan, to discuss the next steps. We had been running small testing advertising campaigns for "The Middle Frame" and were supposed to start larger campaigns in October, but we decided that, ethically speaking, it didn't feel right. We stopped our advertising efforts until February.

We took a screenshot of the call as a statement that we will keep working even in the toughest times. When "The Middle Frame" goes through a hard time in the future, we can look back at that screenshot.

Raya and I talked about the possibility of her moving to Jordan , but she said it wouldn't be easy — her kids and husband have their lives in Ramallah — and the conversation didn't go anywhere at the time.

We're thinking about the people dying and the struggles that our people are facing. Being in the media industry, we're documenting life in the region. It's not easy for us to ignore what's happening.

We know other startup cofounders from Gaza whose office buildings were bombed and who have officially stopped working. A cofounder who I met in Jordan just last year was killed — it was the toughest news I'd ever received in my life.

We're now planning to relocate to the UAE

During Israel's war on Gaza that followed the October 7 attack, the whole Palestinian economy faced the consequences. Middle Frame sales had halted completely in the area.

Due to the situation, I've been on the road travelling. Since October, I've been in Egypt, Dubai, Jerusalem and Ramallah. I was in Jordan until the end of January, and we initially decided to focus our efforts on the Jordanian market. I met with potential clients, like advertising and news agencies, and pitched to potential investors.

We don't know what the future holds. We took a risk by operating in Ramallah for nearly two years, but we knew we should acknowledge that there was no more room for growth and no longer risk our investors' money in a market filled with uncertainty.

Recently, Israeli settler attacks in the West Bank have been very frequent. In mid-April, I was returning from a wedding and got stuck in a village for hours because the settlers were blocking the road. That was the same night Iran fired on Israel ; it really hit me that we can't stay here.

We've been discussing whether we're willing to relocate. We know that the UAE and Saudi Arabia are bigger markets, and we think the UAE — where I believe there's a very diverse business market — would be the best place for us to go.

We're waiting on news from a local investor, but Raya, our CTO, and I hope to relocate at the end of this year. Luckily, Raya's husband is understanding and open to moving.

We hope to return in the future

If I had started "The Middle Frame" anywhere else, we might have been able to grow faster and raise more investments, but I don't regret what we did.

In the future, when our business is stable in a different market, we could maybe have a smaller operation in the Palestinian market.

The Palestinian startup ecosystem needs more examples of successful startups in the wider region to support the startups in Palestine and more investment bodies to support the early-stage startups.

Because the Palestinian startup community is so small, we've had to get on calls with investors and startup founders from other countries to get support and advice; it's pushed us to make connections internationally and it's made us more resilient.

However, taking a minute to zoom out and look at the big picture is important. Some days, you wake up to a news story that is painful to see and hear, making your day 10 times harder to work through.
