English Summary

100 Words Essay On I Went On A Trip To Sigiriya In English

My trip to Sigiriya was nothing short of a magical one!

Situated in Sri Lanka, it is the perfect tourist spot for history lovers like me!

Also referred to as Sinhagiri, Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress. This famous world heritage spot is, in fact, the ruins of a palace atop a massive 200-meter-high rock, surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs and other structures. The rock, interestingly, is a lava plug left over from an ancient long extinct volcano.

Everyone ought to visit Sigiriya, the Lion City, at least once in their lives!

The 12 best places to visit in Sri Lanka

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

With rugged mountains, untouched beaches and fertile soil that grows coconuts, tea and spices, Sri Lanka offers travelers a wondrous mix of experiences unmatched for an island of its size.

Today the country’s rich heritage, delectable cuisine and astonishing wildlife are more accessible than ever, thanks to an ever-improving public transport system. Trains, buses, coaches and tuk-tuks carry visitors to all parts of the island at various price points. But with so many charming places to choose from, where does one start?

Depending on what you’re looking for – art, culture, history – what you put down on your Sri Lanka itinerary is bound to change. Still, here’s our selection of the best places to visit in Sri Lanka to get you started.

A red auto rickshaw, a pedestrian, and a vendor setting up in front of the decorative red-and-white patterned facade of Jamiul Alfar Mosque, built in 1908, in the heart of the bazaar of Pettah, one of the oldest districts in Colombo

Best for exploring on foot

No Sri Lanka itinerary is complete without Colombo , the country’s culturally diverse hub. (But not its capital – that’s actually Sri Jayawardenepura-Kotte!) An ideal first taste of Sri Lanka, with tuk-tuks, cars and buses rushing through busy lanes, Colombo is renowned for its landmark buildings around the cosmopolitan Fort district, including the terracotta-roofed Dutch Hospital .

Be sure to spend some time at Galle Face Green , a seaside promenade where hundreds of families gather to dip their toes in the sea at sunset and children fly kites overhead. Order yourself isso wade , deep-fried prawn and lentil cakes, topped with spicy sambol , and people-watch.

Planning tip: While Colombo is a safe and walkable city, tuk-tuks are inexpensive and convenient for getting around. Always check that your tuk-tuk has a working meter before you get in to ensure you pay the correct fare for your ride.

Above the Lion Gate, many tourists ascend and descend the steep stairs to the top of the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya or Lion Rock in central Sri Lanka

2. Sigiriya

Best for history buffs and art aficionados

With ornate ponds, royal sleeping chambers and majestic lion paws carved into the base of the rock, the colossal granite fortress of Sigiriya  is easily Sri Lanka’s most recognizable site, peeking out of a thick jungle canopy for a glimpse of the ancient kingdom of Kassapa.

Although its frescoes – images of bare-breasted women adorned in jewelry with flowers in their hair – are famous, the view from the top of the rock is unparalleled. A hush of calm echoes over the terraced summit, which covers 1.6 hectares (4 acres).

Planning tip: Get here around 7am – the cooler morning air makes for a pleasant walk up the 1200 steps to the top. Aim to head back down before noon (before the rock surface gets too hot), stay hydrated and wear soft shoes with tread.

A woman shot from behind on a stone path, approaching a tipped-dome shrine (dagaba) ringed by columns in Sri Lanka

3. Anuradhapura

Best for experiencing Buddhist culture

Anuradhapura looks misleadingly like any other Sri Lankan town when you arrive: an unremarkable clock tower, a single train station and small shops lining a busy main road. But the town's simple facade gives nothing away regarding the enormous scale of its heritage as the heartland of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture.

The main feature of this area remains the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, believed to have been planted from a cutting from the tree Buddha attained enlightenment under in Bodhgaya, India. Beyond this, Anuradhapura is bursting with archaeological wonders: colossal dagobas (stupas), temples, palaces and venerable Buddhist sites scattered among the jungles and villages of the area.

Planning tip: Comfortable shoes are a must for walking between sites. Buddhist temples, even as ruins, are still places of worship, and footwear must be removed before entering. Carrying a scarf to cover legs and shoulders is always a good idea.

4. Polonnaruwa

Best for ancient archaeological wonders

Often twinned with a visit to Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa is also famed for its ancient ruins, rock temples and Buddhist heritage.

As you gaze upon the 14m (46ft) reclining Buddha in Gal Viharaya and its surrounding carvings, you can’t help but imagine what went into creating these figures. The white, grey and black granite softens the details of these intricate carvings, and the scent of fresh flowers and incense, offered to the statues by devotees, floats through the temple's air.

Don’t skip the remaining archaeological sites in the area, including the Royal Ruins , which can be visited in a day and contain closely grouped temples and stupas.

Planning tip: If traveling toward Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka, both Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are great places to stay and break up the journey.

Two young boys ride a bike along a street in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The one boy sits on the seat and pedals, while the other sits above the back wheel.

Best for a taste of Tamil culture

From the Jaffna Fort  to the architecturally marvelous Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil , a Hindu temple adorned with brasswork and staggering murals, Jaffna is a relaxed change from the rest of the country. Here you can immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of Sri Lanka’s largest ethnic minority: the Tamil people.

Once under Portuguese and Dutch occupation, today’s Jaffna is revitalized with up-and-coming restaurants. Of the several islands off the coast of Jaffna accessible by roads and ferries, Kayts – a hauntingly beautiful, quiet island of fishing communities – and Delft, with its wild ponies descended from horses abandoned by Dutch colonists, are worth a visit.

Planning tip: The Tamil-centric culture in Jaffna differs from the rest of the island. Be mindful of local customs, such as removing footwear when entering certain sites. This includes the Jaffna Public Librar y, where footwear is removed as a means of respecting the knowledge within the building.

A scenic aerial shot of a mostly empty beach with palm trees, golden sand and gentle turquoise waves, two couples walking by the water and a small boat on the sand in the foreground

6. Trincomalee

Best for an unspoiled beach vacation

Stretches of powdery soft beaches and calm waters meld with dramatic cliffside Hindu temples – among them the famous Kandasamy Kovil , with unmistakable ornamental architecture and a monumental statue of Shiva looking out to sea – for a touch of Sri Lanka that remains off most tourists’ radars.

The coastline here is only disturbed by the occasional bit of driftwood or coconut husk washing ashore in the shallow waters, ripe for snorkeling, where miles of coral reefs and marine life thrive.

Planning tip: Public beaches here do not have lifeguards, and swimming and snorkeling should only be undertaken with a guide.

Buddha statues and colorful religious art in the dimly lit caves at Dambulla

7. Dambulla

Best for pilgrim trails

An important part of the country’s pilgrim trail, set within a quiet jungle that's home to the native toque macaque (aka toque monkey), Rangiri Cave Temple in Dambulla is the most visited place in Sri Lanka.

Expect troops of monkeys to accompany you on the walk up to the temple, inside which you'll find a series of five caves containing 150 well-preserved statues of Buddha alongside religious art, sculpted and painted into the rock.

Planning tip: Wear white or soft colors as a mark of respect, and expect crowds on full-moon days, which are holy days in the Buddhist calendar. While toque macaques are delightful to watch, they are wild and should never be approached.

8. Minneriya National Park

Best for witnessing the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world

Herds of wild elephants – around 300 in number – graze nearly 9000 hectares (22,240 acres) of Minneriya National Park, where life centers around Minneriya Lake. Watch in awe (cameras at the ready, naturally!) as long trunks draw water and calves roll around on the banks in wet mud.

Once a year, during the dry season, all 300 elephants gather around the banks of the lake to graze in a marvelous natural event known as "the Gathering." This also happens to be the largest gathering of Asian elephants in the world.

Planning tip: April to October is the best time to see the Gathering. Prebooking your safari and sharing jeeps helps to reduce the number of vehicles entering the park during this busy period.

Crowds of people pay respect to the Buddhist relic in Temple of the Buddha Tooth, Kandy, Sri Lanka.

Best for experiencing Sri Lanka’s Hill Country

An ideal day trip from Colombo, the train departs the city’s Fort Railway Station and pulls into the heritage town of Kandy in under four hours. As the train curves and winds around mountains to connect rural towns, wide windows frame the view of deep ravines and hillsides densely covered in emerald-green tea bushes.

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake , both must-do attractions for anyone visiting Sri Lanka, are easily reached via tuk-tuk from the station.

Planning tip: Visitors are required to cover their arms, legs and shoulders when visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Kandy-to-Colombo train is an alternative way to experience Sri Lanka’s railway journeys, as popular towns such as Ella are 10 hours away from Colombo.

10. Kalpitiya

Best for surfing enthusiasts

Despite attracting thrill-seekers from around the world, Kalpitiya retains most of its quaint coastal charm, with the exception of a Dutch-era fort that is occupied by the Sri Lankan navy. Cows, goats and donkeys stroll across the villages. Thatched-roof beach huts with outdoor showers offer that stereotypically pleasing surf-shack vibe, and most mornings you’ll wake to a crowing rooster. Most important, just 30km (19 miles) north of here at Vella Island, a narrow sandbar, you’re surrounded by tall, clear waves – kitesurfing heaven.

Planning tip: The weather for kitesurfing is ideal between October to May, and there are several kitesurfing schools around Kalpitiya.

A mugger crocodile (Crocodilus palustris) with its jaws wide open in green marshland

11. Kumana National Park

Best for spotting birds

Known for its 200-hectare (494-acre) bird reserve, Kumana National Park is a birder’s dream, home to throngs of vibrant kingfishers and jungle fowl alongside 255 recorded species of endemic and migrating birds, all of which find sanctuary in the park's mangrove swamps and lagoons.

Expect to spot falcons and eagles as they soar above or peacocks shimmying on the ground. Also frequently spotted here: cleverly camouflaged crocodiles lying in wait on the sandy banks of the lake for a chance encounter with buffalo.

Cap off your trip here with a visit to the coastal village of Panama, which many visitors bypass in favor of bigger towns, such as Pottuvil and Arugam Bay . Between the tiny monastery under a rock, thatched-roof homes and dirt tracks through paddy fields, Panama is one of the most remote places to see.

Planning tip: Entrance to Kumana National Park is through the village of Okanda. Prearranging a guided jeep safari is best for enjoying the park.

12. Adam’s Peak

Best for experiencing a night hike

Adam’s Peak (the footprint of Prophet Adam, in Islam), Sri Pada (the sacred foot of Buddha) and Samanala Kanda (the mountain of the butterflies and a reference to the local deity Saman) are multiple names given to Sri Lanka’s holiest peak, considered sacred by all religions on the island.

Join thousands of pilgrims, dressed in white, in the early hours of the morning to hike slowly and quietly to the little temple at the top . Humble teahouses, resting places and shrines dot the landscape as you ascend. Pilgrims greet each other through blessings for a good climb. The hike to the top takes three to four hours, depending on the trail you choose. Aim to summit at dawn to catch the first rays of the sun wrapping around the mountain.

Planning tip: Adam’s Peak is 2243m (7359ft) high and a moderate climb. Ascending via Hatton and descending via Ratnapura is the shortest route, although steeper.

The full-moon days in December and May mark the beginning and end of the climbing season. During this period, set off earlier to sidestep the crowds, or expect slow and packed trails. Climbing in the offseason is not recommended, as it coincides with the southeastern monsoon.

My Favourite Place Essay

200 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

Everybody has a favourite location, such as a garden, a house, a playground, etc. My hometown, though, is my favourite place, and I love being in my home.

My Hometown

My town is my entire world. I was raised there. I have a lot of lovely and endearing memories of it. I used to play there with my friends and cousins during my early years. In my community, everyone is cordial. My town has many trees. I can only think of one spot where I enjoy spending time - my town. My visits home provide me with much delight and satisfaction. In my town, practically every amenity is available, and the roads and bridges are macadamized.

Additionally, the community has access to medical facilities. The local government also provides excellent maintenance for the public transportation system. In my community, emphasis is placed primarily on education. Everyone wants access to high-quality education, regardless of gender. The neighbourhood helps out with the needs of poor kids. I hold this place- My Town, in high regard.

Everyone has a distinct favourite location. It is in keeping with their preferences and interests. Similarly, my favourite location reflects my interests, and I love being at my favourite place.

500 Words Essay On My Favourite Place

My grandmother's house in my village has often been one of my favourite places to be. Everyone has always held a special place in their hearts for their grandmother's home. We spent numerous summers with our granny when we were younger. Her home appeared to stand out from the rest in some way that made it special.

Enjoyment time

I enjoy playing outside while picking fresh fruits from the trees and eating freshly prepared vegetables. Frequently, I help my grandmother sow seeds in the garden. There are several reasons why I value this place so highly. There is something incredibly unique about the house. I feel at ease and relaxed here.

Why I Love My Grandmother’s House

First of all, the atmosphere at my grandmother’s house is distinctly different. I am at peace here. There is no noise or pollution because it is in a village. Additionally, there are no traffic jams here. I always wake early so that I can go for a walk and take in some fresh air. My body and mind are both revitalised by the fresh air. My grandmother makes me a delicious breakfast. In the evening, my whole family gathers to share our life stories as our grandfather makes tea.

My grandparents' home also has a small garden with grass that is a vibrant green colour. In the garden, there are swings as well. There, we also like playing entertaining games with our relatives, including water fights. We frequently spend the evenings sitting on the roof, looking up at the stars.

Holidays At Grandmother’s House

Over the holidays, there is always a lot of laughing and playing games at grandma’s house. Uncle's loud, recognisable giggle may be heard for miles. My aunt never misses an opportunity to comment on his laughter. The living room of our grandmother's home is where she regularly can be seen sitting and gazing out the window, close to the front entrance. She sits at this location to read the newspaper daily and sip on her old-fashioned steaming black coffee.

She can lose hours watching the birds fly to the feeder next to the window in her living room. Most birds have names that our grandmother is familiar with and recognises. She never skips a chance to observe the squirrels. Everything blossoms, and there are fresh flowers everywhere throughout the summer. In our town, the natural beauty is at an all-time high, and it's impossible to keep your eyes off the stunning surroundings. A pond is located behind the house. My cousins and I go fishing in the pond.

The village's residents lead simple, healthy lives. People care for one another and are always available. They make a lot of effort to maintain the facility's cleanliness because they care about it. We always look forward to our summer vacation so we may visit Grandma and Grandpa. Anyone who has met them will attest to their humility. All of this adds up to why I love my grandparents house and why it is my favourite place.

My favourite place in Sri Lanka

We visited Sigiriya on a very hot and sunny day but the climb was was well worth it! The views are amazing. It amazes me how anybody could build anything so high up. Well worth visit and a place not to be missed whilst visiting Sri Lanka!

Beautiful scenery when you near the Rock and a bit terrifying looking up when you are beneath at the stairs. After a fantastic climb you see beautiful rockpaintings and the views at the top are just awsome. Our guide sam explained about the Fortress and the history. Just GREAT!!

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

So many rush to the top, and if its your first visit this is the obvious thing to do. Since I had climbed the top before, spent two hours enjoying various pleasure gardens with water features, ancient assembly halls, caves etc. The museum too is probably one of the best in Sri Lanka and well worth a visit before the climb.

Did the climb early morning, to beat the heat & the tourist buses, & glad we did. Glad they have now put in a new path as i wouldn't fancy the old way. Amazing views from all angles, The frescoes in unbelievably good condition.

Very interesting. Go during a cooler time of day. The climb requires physical fitness, and is not for you if you are afraid of heights. The view from the top is spectacular. Could use additional signage on the descent to indicate the location of the car park.

I had originally read about this place in Arthur C Clarke's novel 'The fountains of paradise' and wanted to visit it ever since. it did not disappoint. Stunning views, the water gardens (that must be the oldest formal gardens on the planet) the awesome 'Lion entrance' well worth the trip. Tip 1 - go early -there are over 1000 steps and you want to get there before it gets too hot Tip 2 - decline all offers of 'helpers' to get you up there - or negotiate a price before you start Tip 3 - read the book I mentioned - it will bring the place alive

If you’re heading to the Sri Lankan south coast, then a visit to Galle Fort has to be on your bucket list.

Originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 then extended on by the Dutch in the 17th-century, It’s now a thriving Sri Lankan community on the Indian Ocean.

Over time, the fort has become a melting pot of architecture, cuisine, culture and heritage sites. This makes it an incredible place to explore that has SO much to see, eat and do.

As soon as I arrived in Galle Fort, I knew I was going to love exploring here. As a history buff, it was just my cup of tea. Plus, I was able to learn some important chapters of Sri Lanka’s colonial past.

Here’s a definitive guide for Galle with all the best things to do in Galle Fort!

Galle Fort Sri Lanka

A brief history of Galle Fort

Galle’s history as a trading port can be traced back for thousands of years. However, its colonial history with foreign invaders starts around 1505.

This is when the Portuguese first arrived on Sri Lankan shores and started making significant changes to the development of the town.

By 1541, the Portuguese were stationed in Colombo. But they were already constructing the Galle Fort ramparts and a had started building a chapel there. This was with full permission from the King of Sri Lanka at the time.

However, relations took a turn in 1588 when the Sinhalese King attacked the Portuguese. So, they were forced to move from Colombo to Galle.

After that, the Portuguese started to build the rest of Galle Fort in 1588. This fort was then called Santa Cruz and acted as a defence from the Sinhalese. It was also a trade hub and had a prison for Sinhalese ‘rebels’ who opposed Portuguese authority.

By the 17th century, the Dutch arrived and joined forces with the Sinhalese King. Together, they captured Galle Fort and forced the Portuguese out of Galle.

Although it wasn’t ideal to swap one foreign invader for another, the Dutch had an important role to play in Galle Fort.

They started to build up the area significantly by building fortifications, an arsenal, administration buildings and warehouses along with residential areas.

Colombo was then captured by the British in 1796 and Galle Fort was taken over by them one week later. It remained British property in the colony until 1948 when Sri Lanka gained its independence.

Today, Galle Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meaning, it’s of significant historical interest and is protected for all to enjoy.

It’s had significant improvements made by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. So, it looks just as polished as when it was first built!

Things to do in Galle Fort

The best things to do in Galle Fort

1. visit the famous galle lighthouse.

The icon of Galle Fort is definitely its photogenic lighthouse that sits at the far end of Utrecht Bastion.

It’s the oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka that has its origin in 1650. This is when it was an old oil lamp that used to guide sailors onto the shore.

The lighthouse we see today was built by the British in 1848. It was designed in cast iron by the famous architect Alexander Gordon. Since 1939, it’s now completely made of concrete.

It is still a working lighthouse run by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Although you cannot go inside, it is still a highlight attraction of Galle Fort.

The best time to visit the lighthouse would be at sunset. This is when you get a beautiful view from the Utrecht Bastion overlooking the ocean.

Make sure you take your camera as this lighthouse is as pretty as a postcard!

2. Walk along Galle Fort Ramparts

Once you’re finished admiring lighthouse, you can easily walk along the Fort Ramparts next to the ocean.

Although it’s easy to forget, you’ll be walking in there footsteps of Portuguese, Dutch and British soldiers. They were always on the lookout for invading ships!

Most of the fort still stands today and you can see where the old cannons used to point out onto the ocean.

If you did decide to walk the whole way around the ramparts, it will take you around 2-3 hours to complete the circuit. It’s easily one of the best things to do in Galle Fort.

It’s a great way to explore the area and you’ll get picture-perfect views of the ocean. There’s plenty of places to stop off on the way too. So, take your time.

Galle Fort Ramparts

3. Check out the Galle Fort Clock Tower

Another historic monument that is worth visiting is the Galle Fort Clock Tower that overlooks Moon Bastion. This is on the site of the former guardroom while the Dutch were here.

It was built in 1833 and the money for the construction was raised by the locals who lived here at the time. They dedicated the tower to their local Doctor, Peter Daniel Anthonisz.

The clock face that sits in the tower was donated anonymously by a very grateful patient which is so sweet!

Although the clocktower is nearly 200 years old, it still says the correct time today.

Moon Bastion is a great lookout point over Galle Fort. So don’t forget to take in the views while you’re there.

4. Watch the Galle Fort Jumpers (Crazy Jumpers)

One of the most exciting things to do in Galle Fort is watching the cliff jumpers over at Flag Rock Bastion.

These are usually local boys who jump off the side of the fort ramparts and into the ocean.

It’s actually quite nail-biting to watch them as it totally looks like they will hit the rocks below. But, amazingly, they seem to get it right every time!

When I visited in the monsoon season in October, there weren’t many about as the waves were too dangerous to go jumping.

But, if you visit in the peak season of December/January, you’ll see them all the time. They always bring in the crowds for their life-threatening freestyle dives!

Things to do in Galle Fort Sri Lanka

5. Go shopping on Pedlars Street

One of my favourite areas of Galle Old Town was Pedlars Street that is in the heart of the fort.

Here, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars and boutiques to go shopping in. It’s the perfect activity once you’ve explored all of the historical sites.

You’ll find all sorts of shops here including art galleries, typical Sri Lanka souvenirs, clothes shops etc.

One of my favourite shops in Galle Fort was Stick No Bills! This had loads of retro posters and postcards for sale.

I actually collect vintage postcards when I travel so I went to town here. The postcards now sit proudly on my wall haha.

6. See the colourful fishing boats in the harbour

As well as Galle Lighthouse, one of the most iconic sites of the Sri Lankan coastline is the colourful fishing boats that line up on the beach.

Although the fort itself doesn’t have a main beach, there are plenty of little coves that you can visit just outside of the fort walls.

When I was walking towards the new town, I found a great little spot that you could explore right by the ocean. I found so many of these fishing boats lined up along the shore.

Make sure you talk to some of the locals while you’re here. You’ll often see them fixing fishing nets or taking in their catch of the day.

7. Visit the old jail cells in Black Fort

The oldest parts of Galle Fort are now ruins that have been leftover from the Portuguese era. They were the first foreign settlers here and started to build their fort from around the 1540s.

Back then, they called the fort ‘Santa Cruz’. However, when the Dutch took over the fort they renamed the area the ‘Zwart Bastion’ or ‘Black Fort’. It still has this name today.

There are debates over how this part of the fort got the name. Some say that the name Black Fort comes from the fact that smoke used to engulf the area. Others say it was called that due to African slaves who were transported here by the Dutch and kept in the cells.

Today, very little of this area remains due to washouts by the sea. But you can still visit the old jail cells that are open to the public.

Although the holding cells are quite creepy to explore, the views from here are fantastic!

8. Pop inside the Dutch Reformed Church

If you’re interested in historical sites in Galle, then I would definitely recommend stopping by some of the temples that have been built here.

The Portuguese, Dutch and the British all built religious buildings here. But, the most famous is the Dutch Reformed Church or Groote Kerk.

It was built by the Dutch in 1755 and is one of the oldest protestant churches still in use in Sri Lanka!

The architecture both inside and outside of the building is gorgeous. So, make sure you step inside. It’s an oasis of calm from the busy streets.

As well as churches, there are other religious buildings worth visiting. These include Buddhist temples and mosques;

  • Ruins of the Portuguese Church – The first church that was built here by the Portuguese from around 1540. None of the church remains but the ruins can still be seen.
  • All Saints Church – You’ll find this church on the aptly named Church Road. It’s an Anglican place of worship that was consecrated while the British were in power in 1871.
  • St Mary’s Cathedral – A catholic place of worship built by the Society of Jesus in the 19th century.

Things to do in Galle Fort

  • Meeran Mosque – This gleaming white Islamic mosque is quite unique due to the Baroque Victorian architecture. It has a Portuguese facade with Arabic on the front. Tourists usually cannot enter but may do so if invited in and appropriately dressed.
  • Sri Sudharmalaya Buddhist Temple – A small but interesting temple with a beautiful stupa and statue of Buddha. You must also be dressed appropriately to enter.

9. Watch a Cricket Match

Did you know that there is an International Cricket Stadium in Galle? It’s one of the most important venues in Sri Lanka for international matches!

The stadium was originally built in 1876 as a racecourse when the British were here. But, as the interest in racing fell into decline, they decided to change it into a cricket stadium in 1927. This makes it the tenth oldest in Sri Lanka.

According to Sri Lankan cricket players, this stadium is the luckiest as they have won the most matches here!

If you want to watch a cricket match, you’ll need to keep an eye out for matches that take place. These can be friendly matches, national matches and even international against countries like India and New Zealand.

Cricket Matches are one of the most popular things to do in Galle. So, make sure you book tickets online or at the stadium before you go.

10. Eat at the Pedlars Inn Café

There are countless restaurants to choose from in Galle Fort. From Sri Lankan cuisine to international flavours and even vegan outlets. You’ll find no shortage of amazing food.

But, for me, there was one eatery that really stuck out to me in terms of the quality of food and the atmosphere. That’s the Pedlars Inn Café on Pedlars Street.

One of my best memories was eating dinner by candlelight just outside of their restaurant one evening.

I treated myself to a huge pizza and one of the local beers which was absolutely delicious.

If you didn’t want to commit to lunch or dinner here, they have incredible coffee and cakes throughout the day. Try their amazing Gelato! Such a treat with the heat.

11. Visit one of the many Galle museums

If you’re like me, then you’ll love visiting museums when you travel! I don’t know why, but I find them so interesting. Being a bit of a history nerd, I love learning something new.

Galle is a melting pot of cultures from its colonial history and so you’ll find plenty of museums here to keep you occupied. Perfect if its rainy season.

Galle National Museum – Located inside the oldest remaining Dutch building in Galle, this delightful museum is set in the old commissariat store. It hopes to raise awareness to the cultural heritage of southern Sri Lanka.

National Maritime Museum – Opened to the public in 1992, this museum is also set in an old Dutch warehouse. Open daily from 8 am – 4 pm, you can learn all about Galle’s heritage as a centre for sea trade. It also covers the Naval base and the Portuguese and Dutch eras.

Historic Mansion Museum – Located on Leyn Baan Street, this museum is set in an old Dutch home. It has been largely preserved and allows you to travel back in time to the 18th-century. It has a huge collection of antiques including oil lamps, nick knacks and furniture. Make sure you visit the old courtyard with its old well. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of old treasures!

12. Check out Galle Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct

There are many restoration projects around Galle Fort that hope to renovate old colonial buildings and transform them to good use.

One of those is the Old Dutch Hospital that can be found near the Flag Rock Bastion.

Originally, as the name would suggest, this was the old hospital in Galle. It’s one of the oldest buildings that dates back to the 17th century.

Years ago, this building used to tend to Dutch soldiers and those of the Dutch East India Company. When the British arrived it was extended on and transformed into army barracks. It stopped being used when Sri Lanka gained its independence.

Nowadays, it has been transformed into a vibrant shopping district near the coast.

Inside you’ll find cafés, bars and boutiques to visit! It’s quite a high-end place, so prepare to fork out.

13. Have lunch at Rocket Burger

If you were looking for some good, cheap eats in Galle then I would recommend the popular Original Rocket Burger.

Tucked away on the top floor of Church Street, they are Galle’s only burger specialists that serve up an epic menu!

As I was backpacking at the time, I visited here as I found that the meals were so much cheaper than the more expensive tourist eateries.

It definitely didn’t disappoint. They have all sort of burgers sticks here, including a Tiki Tiki burger, Texas Cowboy and the Shipwreck. All come with fries, lots of cheese and toppings.

It’s not just meat either, they have veggie bean burgers and vegan options in-store.

You’ll always find this place packed. If you’re visiting in peak season, prepare to wait for a table!

14. Sip cocktails at Galle Fort Hotel

Galle Fort Hotel is a gorgeous heritage property. It’s easily one of the most popular and high-class hotels in the area.

It’s advertised as a ‘world within another world’ and I can see what they mean. It’s like a portal into a different era.

It was originally built in the 18th century and used as a Dutch mansion and warehouse. The facade outside and its authentic shutter windows are some of the best-preserved examples in Galle Fort.

It was renovated and transformed into the Galle Fort Hotel in 2003 and has since won multiple awards. The building has three floors filled with beautiful historic rooms which have retained many of the old features.

If you can’t afford to sleep over in this paradise, don’t fret. You can always visit their swanky bar for a cocktail once the sun sets.

You can sit inside or relax outside by their fantastic pool. It’s the perfect place to time travel and forget the world outside for a while.

15. Galle new town & Stylo Tailors

Once you’ve seen everything there is to do in Galle Fort, I would definitely recommend visiting the new town of Galle as well.

It’s not as polished as the fort, but it has so much character! You can really get a feel for the local culture here.

As you wander down the many shopping streets, you’ll find fruit markets, bazaars and the fishing stalls too. Although, you’ll probably smell these before you see them!

One of the places I was dying to visit was the highly Instagrammable Stylo Tailors & Textures building. You can find this superstar on Lower Dickson Road in Galle.

Stylo Tailors Instagrammable places in Galle

16. Take a trip along the South Coast!

The great thing about the south coast in Sri Lanka is that most of the beach towns in the area are quite close to one another.

This means you could easily visit one of the popular beaches within a matter of minutes from Galle.

It’s really easy to travel by hiring a scooter, renting an auto-rickshaw or catching a local bus.

I used to ride the local buses here and they were so cheap! Jump on any bus heading to Tangalle and stop off where you like. Journeys cost no more than 50 rupees a single journey.

You could visit the popular beach town of Unawatuna , swing on a palm tree at Dalawella or head on over to Mirissa . The choice is yours!

When is the best time to visit Galle?

The best time to visit Galle would be in the winter months from December til around April time.

This is when there is little rain to be found on the south coast and the waves will be a lot less turbulent. This is perfect for visiting the beaches too!

From May to October / November, you will find that the south coast has lots of rain in the monsoon season.

However, if you do visit during these months there is plenty to see and do! You have many museums and shops to head into if the rain becomes too heavy.

Galle Sri Lanka

Where is Galle Fort in Sri Lanka?

Galle is located on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka around 150 kilometres from the capital city of Colombo.

As one of the most popular destinations in the entire country, it is easily accessible by bus or train.

I personally took the train to Galle from Colombo. It was relatively easy and I managed to reach the south coast within 2-3 hours. The ticket cost me 300 rupees and I opted for a 3rd class carriage.

Galle has its own railway station. So, simply alight there and then take an auto-rickshaw into Galle Fort. There’s usually a fixed fee for a tuk-tuk of 100 rupees. If you’d rather, you can walk!

Train to Galle

G etting around Galle Fort

Galle Fort is easy to explore on foot if you wanted to take your time. Walking around the Galle Fort Ramparts route is one of the easiest ways to do this and you can tick off many sights along the way.

But, if you didn’t fancy walking due to the weather conditions, you could opt to have a tour of the fort by auto-rickshaw.

As I was on a strict timeframe, I opted for a rickshaw tour of Galle Fort and loved it! It was a half day tour and cost me around 500 rupees (plus I gave an extra tip).

On my tour, my driver took me to all the notable sights, waited for me to look around and also took some photos for me. He was really sweet.

Where to stay in Galle Fort

There are plenty of amazing places to stay within Galle Fort itself. Staying inside the fort is actually the better option as it’s away from the busy traffic of the city!

These may be a little more on the expensive side, but the quality of hotels is so much better within the fort.

Here are my top picks;

Galle Fort Hotel – An award-winning heritage hotel within the fort with some of the best-retained features. This hotel is the best pick in town and celebrities stay here! Click here to book.

The Heritage Hotel Galle Fort – The Heritage Hotel is another fine property set within an old Dutch colonial building. Set across two floors, it has plenty of rooms t book and a fine dining restaurant. Click to book.

Mango House – Set in a Dutch colonial mansion, this light and airy hotel has comfy rooms at an affordable price. You can enjoy a home-cooked breakfast in their courtyard! Click to enquire.

I've been to 107 countries. Italy and Mexico are great, but these 5 underrated destinations should be on your travel radar.

  • I've visited 107 countries, and I recommend these 5 that can be overlooked for more popular places.
  • Estonia is a European dream, and Namibia is one of my favorite places in the world .
  • Costa Rica is popular but not as packed with tourists as some similarly beautiful places nearby.

Insider Today

This year, travelers are looking to visit more under-the-radar destinations than popular ones — in part to dodge crowds and in part to save money.

Some are specifically looking for "travel dupes," a term for destinations similar to popular spots that are often cheaper with fewer crowds.

And, as someone who's been to 107 countries , I can tell you each region of the world has an often overlooked country that may offer a more rewarding experience than a more well-known place. These more under-the-radar destinations are often less crowded, and your dollar just might go further.

Popular travel destinations like Italy, France, and Mexico are great picks — but consider visiting these alternative options to the more popular choices in the region.

Estonia is a European dream.

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

I was immediately captivated by the fairy-tale appearance of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Walking the cobblestoned streets within the fortress-like walls of the old city transported me back to medieval times.

The city is small enough to explore on foot, and there's plenty to entertain history and architecture enthusiasts. Enjoying a coffee or a beer in the Town Hall Square while people watching is a highlight of my European travels.

Although many people visit Tallinn as a day trip from Helsinki, which is a two-hour ferry ride away, it's worth staying here for a few days and heading into the Estonian countryside. The roads are often quite empty and incredibly peaceful.

I enjoyed Estonia so much that I returned twice more in the 18 months after my first visit.

I've enjoyed visiting Oman, a country in the Middle East.

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

Dubai gets a lot of attention for its luxurious travel opportunities , and many know Qatar because it recently hosted the World Cup, but nearby Oman should not be skipped.

After all, Oman's capital, Muscat, provides an excellent gateway to the country.

A stroll along the beautiful Corniche will take you along the water and by the bustling Grand Bazaar. For those who love hikes, there are plenty of options in Oman, including several easily accessible trails in Muscat that offer great city views.

Better still, the amazing Wadi Shab is less than two hours from the capital city and is one of the best hikes I've ever experienced . The trail takes you through narrow gorges and across streams and ends with a surreal swim through incredible caves.

It's an experience so breathtaking I'd expected it to be packed with tourists, but it wasn't when we visited. We only saw a handful of people, which allowed us to really enjoy our trip.

I've seen many parts of Africa, but Namibia may just be my favorite spot.

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

I have been fortunate to go on safaris in Kenya , Botswana, and Tanzania, but Namibia is my favorite travel destination of the bunch.

While there, we rented a campervan and did a self-drive tour of the country, allowing us to explore independently. Yet again, we avoided the crowds and the campsites were usually just us and local animals.

Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, elephants, and even lions was a special treat, especially knowing we were safe inside our campervan.

In addition to the wildlife, there's a lot to explore in Namibia, including colossal dunes, which we hiked up and surfed down —undoubtedly the trip highlight for my children.

Sri Lanka showcases a lot of what Asia landscapes have to offer.

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

Asia has some beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has beaches and tea plantations, mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and more.

We visited Sri Lanka last year and hired a driver and guide who showcased the diverse landscapes of this island country. The food was terrific and extremely cheap — our family of four was fed for less than $10 on most occasions.

The locals I interacted with were incredibly friendly and the island is also small enough to allow for in-depth exploration in a relatively short time.

Costa Rica is an excellent place to visit in Central America.

my favorite place in sri lanka essay

Growing up in Texas, my wife has been to Mexico many times since the state shares a border with the country. But to explore somewhere new, smaller, and in the same region, we chose to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica .

Although it's still popular, Costa Rica offers an authentic travel experience as I feel it has yet to be overrun by tourists. Like the other countries on this list, it has a diverse landscape, from white-sand beaches to rainforests to volcanoes, so there's plenty to do.

We also visited during the rainy season, so we took advantage of low crowds , low prices, and often received upgrades — and, as a bonus, it rarely rained!
