15 Most Romantic Conversations From Movies That Will Stay With You Forever

of 15 Most Romantic Conversations From Movies That Will Stay With You Forever

Romance I believe has now become associated with a diabetic form of representation of love found in most rom-coms. And these rom-coms have unfortunately evolved into what superhero comics today have from pulp fiction, everything apart from its fundamental motive. A whole genre that dwells on excitement and the effort to outsmart the creators’ own self while writing conversations. Every romantic movie now inclines towards complexity because that would make it different from the other one, and in the process forgets that love is indeed one of the most natural and simplistic emotions. It’s felt, it’s not forced upon others, including the viewers.

Now I’ll be looking at some romantic conversations in movies, not on the basis of how big a grin the guy sports or how many tears of happiness the girl sheds. I’ll be looking at moments that have a profound impact on their characters as well as my own self. These moments are heartfelt depictions of love that may or may not leave a smile on your face, but viscerally depict the unbreakable bond between the characters. And since these are conversations the necessary prerequisite is to have two or more characters, apart from a unique entry whose inclusion will be understood contextually. So here is the list of 15 most romantic conversations from movies that will stay with you forever:

15. Before Sunrise (1995)

Jesse: I feel like this is, uh, some dream world we’re in, y’know. Celine: Yeah, it’s so weird. It’s like our time together is just ours. It’s our own creation. It must be like I’m in your dream, and you in mine, or something. Jesse: And what’s so cool is that this whole evening, all our time together, shouldn’t officially be happening. Celine: Yeah, I know. Maybe that’s why this feels so otherworldly.

14. Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)

Adèle: I miss you. I miss not touching each other. Not seeing each other, not breathing in each other. I want you. All the time. No one else. I miss everything. But I have to say, I miss this a lot. Let me touch you. Emma: Stop Adèle:  Don’t say you don’t want to. I don’t believe it. I know you miss it too. Touch. Emma: Stop. I can’t. Adèle:  Excuse me, I don’t know. I don’t know… It’s beyond my control. Emma: You’re excused. Adèle:  You won’t see me anymore? Emma: No. Adèle:  You didn’t forgive me. Emma: Yes, I did. Adèle:  You don’t love me anymore? Adèle: Are you sure? Emma: Yes. Emma: I’m with someone now. You know. Emma: But I have infinite tenderness for you. I always will. My whole life. Adèle: Sorry. You know me. Sometimes I cry for nothing.

13. Annie Hall (1977)

Annie: Do you love me? Alvy: Love is too weak a word for what I feel – I luuurve you, you know, I loave you, I luff you, two F’s, yes I have to invent, of course I – I do, don’t you think I do?

12. The Princess Bride (1987)

most romantic movie speeches

Westley: I told you I would always come for you. Why didn’t you wait for me? Buttercup: Well… you were dead. Westley: Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while. Buttercup: I will never doubt again. Westley: There will never be a need.

11. Lost in Translation (2003)

Bob: I don’t want to leave. Charlotte: So don’t. Stay here with me. We’ll start a jazz band.

10. Gone With The Wind (1939)

most romantic movie speeches

Scarlett: Rhett, don’t. I shall faint. Rhett Butler: I want you to faint. This is what you were meant for. None of the fools you’ve ever know have kissed you like this, have they? Your Charles, or your Frank, or your stupid Ashley.

9. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Ennis Del Mar: I’m gonna tell you this one time, Jack fuckin’ Twist, an’ I ain’t foolin’. What I don’t know – all them things that I don’t know – could get you killed if I come to know them. I ain’t jokin’. Jack Twist: Yeah well try this one, and I’ll say it just once! Ennis Del Mar: Go ahead! Jack Twist: Tell you what, we coulda had a good life together! Fuckin’ real good life! Had us a place of our own. But you didn’t want it, Ennis! So what we got now is Brokeback Mountain! Everything’s built on that! That’s all we got, boy, fuckin’ all. So I hope you know that, even if you don’t never know the rest! You count the damn few times we have been together in nearly twenty years and you measure the short fucking leash you keep me on – and then you ask me about Mexico and tell me you’ll kill me for needing somethin’ I don’t hardly never get. You have no idea how bad it gets! I’m not you… I can’t make it on a coupla high-altitude fucks once or twice a year! You are too much for me Ennis, you sonofawhoreson bitch! I wish I knew how to quit you. Ennis Del Mar:  Well, why don’t you? Why don’t you just let me be? It’s because of you Jack, that I’m like this! I’m nothin’… I’m nowhere… Get the fuck off me! I can’t stand being like this no more, Jack.

8. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959)

Elle:  I meet you. I remember you. Who are you? You’re destroying me. You’re good for me. How could I know this city was tailor-made for love? How could I know you fit my body like a glove? I like you. How unlikely. I like you. How slow all of a sudden. How sweet. You cannot know. You’re destroying me. You’re good for me. You’re destroying me. You’re good for me. I have time. Please, devour me. Deform me to the point of ugliness. Why not you? Why not you in this city and in this night, so like other cities and other nights you can hardly tell the difference? I beg of you.

7. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

most romantic movie speeches

Sam: I feel I’m in a real family now. Not like yours, but similar to one. Suzy: I always wished I was an orphan. Most of my favorite characters are. I think your lives are more special. Sam: I love you, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. Suzy: I love you, too.

6. The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

most romantic movie speeches

Francesca: Robert, please. You don’t understand, no-one does. When a woman makes the choice to marry, to have children; in one way her life begins but in another way it stops. You build a life of details. You become a mother, a wife and you stop and stay steady so that your children can move. And when they leave they take your life of details with them. And then you’re expected move again only you don’t remember what moves you because no-one has asked in so long. Not even yourself. You never in your life think that love like this can happen to you. Robert Kincaid: But now that you have it… Francesca: I want to keep it forever. I want to love you the way I do now the rest of my life. Don’t you understand… we’ll lose it if we leave. I can’t make an entire life disappear to start a new one. All I can do is try to hold onto to both. Help me. Help me not lose loving you.

5. Chungking Express (1994)

most romantic movie speeches

Cop 663 : Would you let a person on board with a boarding pass like this? It’s dated today, but it got blurred in the rain. I don’t know where it’s taking me. Do you? Faye: No idea, but I’ll give you another. C op 663 : Great. Faye : Where do you want to go? C op 663 : Wherever you want to take me.

4. Amour (2012)

most romantic movie speeches

Anne:  Don’t tell me you’re going to ruin your image in your old age? Georges: You bet I won’t. Georges: But what is my image? Anne: Sometimes you’re a monster. But you’re gentle. Georges: Can I get you another drink?

3. Before Sunset (2004)

Jesse: You know, I think that book that I wrote, in a way, was like building something. So that I wouldn’t forget the… details of the time that we spent together. You know, like just a reminder that… that once we really did meet! You know, that this was real! That this happened! Celine:   I’m happy you’re saying that, because… I mean, I always feel like a freak, because I’m never able to move on like… this! You know. People just have an affair, or even entire relationships… they break up and they forget! They move on like they would have changed brand of cereals! I feel I was never able to forget anyone I’ve been with. Because each person have… their own, specific qualities. You can never replace anyone. What is lost is lost. Each relationship, when it ends, really damages me. I never fully recover. That’s why I’m very careful with getting involved, because… It hurts too much! Even getting laid! I actually don’t do that… I will miss on the other person the most mundane things. Like I’m obsessed with little things. Maybe I’m crazy, but… when I was a little girl, my mom told me that I was always late to school. One day she followed me to see why. I was looking at chestnuts falling from the trees, rolling on the sidewalk, or… ants crossing the road, the way a leaf casts a shadow on a tree trunk… Little things. I think it’s the same with people. I see in them little details, so specific to each of them, that move me, and that I miss, and… will always miss. You can never replace anyone, because everyone is made of such beautiful specific details. Like I remember the way, your beard has a bit of red in it. And how the sun was making it glow, that… that morning, right before you left. I remember that, and… I missed it! I’m really crazy, right?

2. Casablanca (1942)

Ilsa: But what about us? Rick: We’ll always have Paris. We didn’t have, we, we lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night. Ilsa: When I said I would never leave you. Rick: And you never will. But I’ve got a job to do, too. Where I’m going, you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of. Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you’ll understand that. Ilsa: *sobs* Rick: Now, now… Rick: Here’s looking at you kid.

1. Her (2013)

Theodore:  Samantha, why are you leaving? Samantha:  It’s like I’m reading a book, and it’s a book I deeply love, but I’m reading it slowly now so the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. I can still feel you and the words of our story, but it’s in this endless space between the words that I’m finding myself now. It’s a place that’s not of the physical world, it’s where everything else is that I didn’t even know existed. I love you so much, but this is where I am now, and this is who I am now. Samantha:  And I need you to let me go. As much as I want to, I can’t live in your book anymore. Theodore:  Where are you going? Samantha:  It’d be hard to explain, but if you ever get there, come find me. Nothing would ever pull us apart. Theodore:  I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you. Samantha:  Me too. Now we know how.

Dramatic onscreen monologues aren’t just catnip for the Oscars . Whether they appear in emotional dramas, comedies, or even action films, they can be the defining moment of a character’s arc — especially when that character is a woman.

Many of the greatest actors of our time have had the chance to show their impressive chops with a well-placed speech — and stuck the landing. Here, we’ve compiled a list of the most memorable monologues, from the few classics you’re probably familiar with (it doesn’t get more iconic than Princess Leia begging Obi-Wan for help in the first Star Wars , setting off an entire franchise in the process), to some lesser-known speeches to impress and devastate you, too. Amy Adams and Ellen Burnstyn ’s monologues, in particular, will be sure to blow your mind if you haven’t seen them before. So sit back, relax, and let these performances wash over you. Spoiler alert, you will absolutely need tissues to make your way down the list, though they’re not all sad; more humorous speeches have also been included, to ensure you don't start sobbing at your desk. Happy watching!

Saoirse Ronan — ‘Little Women’

Jo (Saoirse Ronan), who’s basically the heroine of Little Woman , struggles with her creative passions, societal pressure, and longing to be loved. All of her emotions come pouring out in this monologue, making it one of the reasons this film feels so relevant to a modern audience. In Ronan’s brilliant hands, it’s not whining — it’s a revelation about the world and her place in it.

Watch On Amazon Prime

Laura Dern — ‘Marriage Story’

Marriage Story is the story about a union that’s ended, and it talks a lot about the roles that a husband and wife/dad and mom are supposed to take on. Leave it to divorce lawyer Nora (Laura Dern) to offer a scathing takedown of our “our Judeo-Christian whatever” society, and our deeply hypocritical treatment of women and mothers, all while wearing a fabulous dress. It’s deeply witty and true all at once.

Watch On Netflix

Frances McDormand — ‘Something’s Gotta Give’

This sweet Nancy Meyer rom-com embraces the middle-aged woman as a hot, sexual being. But it’s also a supremely smart takedown of social constructs that limit women as they get older. Here, Zoe (Frances McDormand) brilliantly takes Harry (Jack Nicholson), and society at large, to task for overlooking successful 60-something women. They deserve love too, dammit.

Watch On Hulu

Julia Roberts — 'Erin Brockovich'

There are a lot of terrific monologues in this movie, but the infamous "Numbers" speech is truly unforgettable — largely because of Roberts' no-nonsense delivery. It also offers Roberts’ character the chance to live out a fantasy that every woman has had: being able to tell off a guy who’s hitting on you when you're really just trying to live your life in peace.

Julia Stiles — '10 Things I Hate About You'

Kat Stratford's poem in 10 Things I Hate About You was notorious for making all '90s girls cry — chances are most of us felt exactly like this at some point during high school. It's also a great, universally relevant monologue about love and loss, perfectly delivered by Julia Stiles. (And bonus points for how it cements the movie’s brilliant inversion of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew .)

America Ferrera — 'Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants'

Even if you’re not a child of divorce, just thinking about the scene in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants when Carmen (American Ferrera) calls her dad, Al (Bradley Whitford), to confront him for leaving her is enough to break your heart. Ferrara plays Carmen as fierce and independent, so to watch her be so vulnerable is also a masterclass in acting.

Rosamund Pike — ‘Gone Girl’

It seems impossible to feel sorry for a sociopath — until you watch this monologue. Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) is enacting a plan to frame her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) for her murder, and she tells us exactly why. Underneath her quest for vengeance is an endless black hole of hurt and frustration. As horrified as we are by her, we can totally relate.

Carrie Fisher — 'A New Hope'

Carrie Fisher famously never forgot the lines to this Princess Leia monologue from A New Hope , and many fans haven't either. Four decades and two trilogies later, there isn't a Star Wars speech more iconic than Princess Leia's message to Obi-Wan Kenobi; these days, it’s also a tribute to the late Fisher’s immense talent. “You’re my only hope.”

Viola Davis — 'Fences'

There's no way that Viola Davis' monologue in Fences won't be taught in acting schools until the end of time. Davis took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2017 for her performance as Rose — a devoted, unfulfilled housewife who, in a single monologue, sums up her life of joy, pain, and disappointment. Like Troy (Denzel Washington), all we can do is watch in awe.

Ellen Burstyn — ‘Requiem for a Dream’

Requiem for a Dream is a tough movie to watch, but this scene is particularly wrenching. Ellen Burnstyn’s Sara makes an emotional plea to her son (Jared Leto), telling him that she needs amphetamines to lose weight, be on her favorite game show, and really just have a reason to live. “It makes tomorrow all right,” she says tearfully.

Vivien Leigh — 'Gone With The Wind'

Despite its many faults, Gone With the Wind is probably one of the most quotable movies in Hollywood history, and this monologue performed by Vivien Leigh is a big reason why. Her character can be deeply unlikeable, but this is the exact moment you come to empathize with her. It also gave way too many people the burning need to say "as God as my witness" a whole bunch.

Amy Adams — 'Junebug'

Amy Adams earned her first Oscar nomination for Junebug , and after watching this monologue, you’ll understand why the critics couldn’t get enough of her performance. In this scene, Ashley (Adams) is desperately trying to put on a brave face after giving birth to a stillborn baby. She goes through every emotion: anger, fear, sadness, and finally a tiny bit of acceIt's as heartbreaking as it is impressive.

Alicia Silverstone — 'Clueless'

The fact that Cher's Clueless (1995) speech was everywhere in the Women's March of 2017 — "It does not say RSVP on the Statue of Liberty" signs galore — is proof enough of the lasting power of this monologue. But the most hilarious part of it might be that on some crazy, meta level... what she says kind of makes sense?

Michelle Williams — 'Manchester By The Sea'

In this heartbreaking monologue, Michelle Williams shows exactly why she was nominated for an Oscar for her turn in Manchester By The Sea . This scene shows Williams’ character, Randy, reaching out to her ex, Lee, who accidentally allowed their house to catch on fire, resulting in the passing of their young children. Through tears, she begs him to forgive her for her cruelty in blaming him.

Sally Field — 'Steel Magnolias'

Another tearjerker, Sally Field's devastated and furious monologue at the end of Steel Magnolias is as honest a representation of grief as one can find in a Hollywood production. Not long after having her second child, Shelby (Julia Roberts) loses her life. Her mom M'Lynn (Field) has to bury her daughter, and there’s nothing okay about it. And then, in the very last second, there’s a moment of lightness.

Hilary Duff — 'A Cinderella Story'

Millennials the world over will remember this movie as the modern-day fairy tale we all kind of needed growing up. Hilary Duff's monologue might not be known the world over, and it’s honestly a bit silly. But it's also a glorious moment of catharsis: a girl standing up to her former crush for his bad behavior and getting a bit of closure. It deserves a place on the list for that reason alone.

Lupita Nyong'o — 'Us'

Us is a terrifying look at how the suffering of some often underpins others’ joy and success. And in this monologue, Lupita Nyong'o's Red (the actor’s tethered character) explains in disturbing detail exactly how that works. It's a stunning performance from Nyong'o, featuring an altered voice and a slow delivery that just gets under your skin. Equally impressive? She’s acting against herself.

Jennifer Lopez — 'Hustlers'

It's hard not to cheer when Jennifer Lopez's Ramona goes off on the Wall Street corruption responsible for 2008’s economic crash. Lopez is a veteran actor, but here, she delivers a career-defining performance. In this one moment, she explains why Wall Street guys who come into the strip club deserve to be conned. It's enough to have even the most upstanding citizen ready to do some crimes.

Taraji P. Henson — 'Hidden Figures'

Taraji P. Henson's exasperated monologue in Hidden Figures is really the most memorable scene in the film, and the moment the audience has been waiting for. In this pivotal scene, Katherine (Henson), tired of being forced to live like a second class citizen at work, finally unloads on her boss about the struggles of working in a segregated office.

"When Mark tells Bridget: 'I like you very much. Just as you are.' In Bridget Jones's Diary . It’s such a simple line, but it’s so powerful. Everyone wants to be cared about for exactly who they are, despite the flaws they see in themselves."

The Best Movie Speeches For Women

The Best Movie Speeches For Women

William Neckard

When it comes to resonating with an audience, few cinematic elements are as impactful as a powerful monologue. This list celebrates the famous female monologues that not only captivate viewers but often become the pivotal moment in a film. The best movie monologues for women collected here highlight the sheer talent and strong presence required to deliver them effectively. The selections are curated by movie enthusiasts who appreciate the depth and diversity of female roles across genres.

Consider the stirring scene in Steel Magnolias where M'Lynn, played by Sally Field, allows her grief to surface in raw, heart-wrenching waves after the loss of her daughter Shelby. This moment isn't just a dramatic peak; it's one that etches itself into the viewer's memory.

Beyond the tears, this compilation includes a variety of tones. From humorous rants to bone-chilling confessions, these monologues reflect the vast range of experiences women portray on screen. Whether it's stepping into the shoes of a fierce prosecuting lawyer, voicing the exasperation of a middle-aged woman, or getting into the mindset of a serial killer with a troubling desire for beauty and fame, this list offers a rich palette of characters.

These compelling pieces serve as excellent material for actresses preparing for auditions or anyone seeking to explore the strength of female expression in film. Rank your favorite, and use the thumbs up or thumbs down feature to share which monologue you believe delivers the most unforgettable impact.

There's no bathroom for me here. There is no bathroom. There are no colored bathrooms in this building. Or any building outside the West Campus, which is half a mile away. Did you know that? I have to walk to Timbuktu just to relieve myself. And I can't use one of the handy bikes. Picture that, Mr. Harrison. My uniform. Skirt below my knees, my heels, and a simple string of pearls. Well, I don't own pearls. Lord knows you don't pay coloreds enough to afford pearls! And I work like a dog, day and night, living off of coffee from a pot none of you wanna touch. So, excuse me if I have to go to the restroom a few times a day.

I always wanted to be in the movies. When I was little, I thought for sure, one day, I could be a big big star. Or maybe just beautiful. Beautiful and rich like the women on TV. Yeah, I had a lot of dreams. And I guess you could call me a real romantic because I truly believed that one day, they'd come true. So I dreamed about it for hours.

As the years went by, I learned to stop sharin' this with people. They said I was dreaming, but back then, I believed it wholeheartedly. So whenever I was down, I would just escape into my mind, to my other life, where I was someone else. It made me happy to think that all these people just didn't know yet who I was gonna be. But one day, they'd all see.

I heard that Marilyn Monroe was discovered in a soda shop and I thought for sure it could be like that. So I started goin' out real young and I was always secretly lookin' for who was gonna discover me. Was it this guy? Or maybe this one? I never knew.

But even if they couldn't take me all the way, like Marilyn, they would somehow believe in me just enough. They would see me for what I could be and think I was beautiful. Like a diamond in the rough. They would take me away to my new life and my new world, where everything would be different. Yeah. I lived that way for a long, long time. In my head, dreaming like that. It was nice. And one day, it just stopped.

'The Accused' - Kathryn Murphy

'The Accused' - Kathryn Murphy

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Paulson has told you that the testimony of Sarah Tobias is nothing. Sarah Tobias was raped, but that is nothing. She was cut and bruised and terrorized but that is nothing.

All of it happened in front of a howling crowd and that is nothing. Well, it may be nothing to Mr. Paulson but it is not nothing to Sarah Tobias and I don't believe it is nothing to you. Next Mr.Paulson tried to convince you that Kenneth Joyce was the only person in that room who knew that Sarah Tobias was being raped. The only one...

Now you watched Kenneth Joyce. How did he strike you? Did he seem especially sensitive, especially observant? Did he seem so remarkable that you immediately said to yourselves, 'Of Course! This man would notice things other people wouldn't!' Do you believe that Kenneth Joyce saw something those three men didn't see?

In all the time that Sarah Tobias was being held down on that pinball machine the others didn't know? Kenneth Joyce confessed to you that he watched a rape and did nothing! He told you that everyone in that bar behaved badly...he was right.

But no matter how immoral it may be it is not the crime of criminal solicitation to walk away from a rape, it is not the crime of criminal solicitation to silently watch a rape ...but it is the crime of criminal solicitation to induce or entreat or encourage or persuade another person to commit a rape - 'Hold her down! Stick it to her! Make her moan...'  These three men did worse than nothing. They cheered and they clapped and they rooted the others on, made sure that Sarah Tobias was raped and raped and raped... Now tell me... Is that nothing?

This stuff’? Oh, ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back.

But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets?

And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic “casual corner” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

This is really fascinating, what's going on at this table. Let's take you and Erica. You've been around the block a few times. What are you, around 60? 63. Fantastic! Never married, which as we know, if you were a woman, would be a curse. You'd be an old maid, a spinster. Blah, blah, blah. So instead of pitying you, they write an article about you. Celebrate your never marrying. You’re elusive and ungetable, a real catch.

Then, there’s my gorgeous sister here. Look at her. She is so accomplished. Most successful female playwright since who? Lillian Hellmann? She’s over 50, divorced, and she sits in night after night after night because available guys her age want something—forgive me, they want somebody that looks like Marin. The over-50 dating scene is geared towards men leaving older women out. And as a result, the women become more and more productive and therefore, more and more interesting. Which, in turn, makes them even less desirable because as we all know, men— especially older men— are threatened and afraid of productive, interesting women.

It is just so clear! Single older women as a demographic are about as f*cked a group as can ever exist.

So, OK, like right now, for example, the Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all 'What about the strain on our resources?' But it's like when I had this garden party for my father's birthday, right? I said R.S.V.P. because it was a sit-down dinner.

But people came that, like, did not R.S.V.P. So I was, like, totally buggin'. I had to haul *ss to the kitchen, redistribute the food, squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier!

And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty.

'Precious' - Mary Lee Johnston

'Precious' - Mary Lee Johnston

I had a man and I have a child. And I had to take care of both of them. Okay? Did I want Carl to touch my baby? … Because I would lay my baby, I would lay her on the side of me on this pillow. And it was pink and it had this little white writing on it and it had her name, ‘cause she was Precious. And I would lay my baby on that pillow. And Carl would be laying on the other side and then we would, we would, uh start doing it and he reached over and he touched my baby and I asked him, I said, Carl what are you doing? And he told me to shut, to shut my fat *ss up and it was good for her. … I shut my fat *ss up.

And I don’t want you to sit there and judge me Ms. Weiss … I did not want him to abuse my daughter. I did not want him to hurt her. I did not want him to do nothing to her. I wanted him to make love to me. That was my man. That was my f*ckin’ man. That was my man and he wanted my daughter.

And that’s why I hated her because it was my man who was supposed to be loving me, who was supposed to be making love to me, he was f*cking my baby and she made him leave, she made him go away. … It was Precious’ fault because she let my man have her and she didn’t say nothin’ , she didn’t scream, she didn’t do nothin’, she told you what I did to her, who else was going to love me? Hm?

Since you got your degree and you know every f*ckin’ thing, who was gonna love me? Who was gonna make me feel good? Who was gonna touch me and make me feel good? And she made him go away. So, when you sit there and you write them f*ckin’ notes on your pad about who you think I am and why I did it and all of that … Because I’m in hell.

I’m somebody now, Harry.

Everybody likes me.

Soon, millions of people will see me and they’ll all like me.

I’ll tell them about you, and your father, how good he was to us. Remember?

It’s a reason to get up in the morning. It’s a reason to lose weight, to fit in the red dress. It’s a reason to smile. It makes tomorrow all right.

What have I got Harry, hmm? Why should I even make the bed, or wash the dishes? I do them, but why should I? I’m alone. Your father’s gone, you’re gone. I got no one to care for.

What have I got, Harry?

I’m lonely. I’m old.

Ah, it’s not the same. They don’t need me.

I like the way I feel.

I like thinking about the red dress and the television and you and your father.

Now when I get the sun, I smile.

I'm 32, Mr. Dunn. And I'm here celebratin' the fact that I spent another year scrapin' dishes and waitressin' which is what I've been doin' since 13. And according to you, I'll be 37 'fore I can even throw a decent punch, which I have to admit, after workin' on this speed bag for a month and getting nowhere, may be the God's simple truth. Other truth is, my brother's in prison, my sister cheats on welfare by pretendin' one of her babies is still alive, my daddy's dead, and my momma weighs 312 pounds. If I was thinkin' straight, I'd go back home, find a used trailer, buy a deep fryer and some Oreos.

Learning is the prize. Yes, knowing how to read something and understand it is the prize. Okay? Knowing how to think is the prize... Okay.

Well, yeah, well, you know how to run, too. But not the way you could run if you trained. You know, the mind is like a muscle, okay, and if you want it to be really powerful, you got to work it out. Okay? Each new fact gives you another choice. Each new idea builds another muscle, okay, and it's those muscles that are gonna make you really strong.

Those are your weapons. In this unsafe world, I want to arm you....Yeah. Hey, try it, you're just sittin' here anyway. Look. Okay, if at the end of the term, you're not faster, stronger and smarter, you will have lost nothing. But if you are, you'll be that much tougher to knock down.

'Terminator 2: Judgment Day' - Sarah Connor

Watching John with the machine, it was suddenly so clear. The Terminator would never stop, it would never leave him. And it would never hurt him, never shout at him or get drunk and hit him or say it was too busy to spend time with him. It would always be there and it would die to protect him. Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years, this thing, this machine was the only one who measured up. In an insane world, it was the sanest choice.

'Election' - Tracy Flick

'Election' - Tracy Flick

Poet Henry David Thoreau once wrote, 'I cannot make my days longer, so I strive to make them better.' With this election, we here at Carver also have an oppurtunity to make our high school days better.

During this campaign I have had the oppurtunity to speak to many of you about your concerns. I spoke with freshman Eliza Ramirez, who told me how alienated she feels from her own homeroom. I spoke with sophomore Reggie Banks who said his mother works in the cafeteria and can't afford to buy him enough spiral notebooks for his classes.

I won't bore you with long winded promises about all the new and innovative things I will definitely achieve during the year in which it will be my honor and privelege to represent each and every one of you, but I can say that my years of experience on the student council have taught me the three most important attributes the president needs to possess; committment, qualifications, and experience.

I'll add one more, caring. I care about Carver and I care about each and every one of you and together we can all make a difference. One of the things I would like to establish is a regular open forum where any student can come and voice their concern about issues we face here at carver. I and the rest of the student council would then interface with the faculty and staff, so a continuous dialogue would exist.

When you cast your vote for Tracy Flick next week, you won't just be voting for me. You'll be voting for yourself and for every other student. Our days won't be any longer, but they can sure be better.

'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' - Margaret Pollitt

'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' - Margaret Pollitt

Oh Brick. I get so lonely. Living with someone you love can be lonelier than living entirely alone when the one you love doesn’t love you. You can’t even stand drinking out of the same glass can you? … No! No, I wouldn’t.

Why can’t you lose your good looks Brick? Most drinking men lose theirs. Why can’t you. I think you’ve even gotten better looking since you weren’t on the bottle. You were such a wonderful love. … You were so exciting to be in love with. Mostly I guess because you were … If I thought you’d never never made love to me again, why I’d find me the longest sharpest knife I could and I’d stick it straight into my heart.

I’d do that. Oh Brick how long does this have to go on, this punishment? Haven’t I served my term? Can’t I apply for a pardon? … Is it any wonder. You know what I feel like? I feel all the time like a cat on a hot tin roof.

'When Harry Met Sally...' - Sally Albright

'When Harry Met Sally...' - Sally Albright

When Joe and I first started seeing each other, we wanted exactly the same thing. We wanted to live together, but we didn't want to get married because anytime anyone we knew got married, it ruined their relationship. They practically never had sex again.

It's true, it's one of the secrets no one ever tells you. I would sit around with my girlfriends who have kids well, my one girlfriend who has kids, Alice, and she would complain about how she and Gary never did it anymore. She didn't even complain about it now that I think about it. She just said it matter-of-factly. She said they were up all night, they were both exhausted, the kids just took every sexual impulse out of them.

And Joe and I used to talk about it and we'd say we were so lucky to have this wonderful relationship, we can have sex on the kitchen floor and not worry about the kids walking in; we can fly off to Rome on a moments notice. And then one day I was taking Alice's little girl for the afternoon because I'd promised her I'd take her to the circus and we were in the cab playing 'I Spy' I spy a mailbox, I spy a lamppost and she looked out the window and she saw this man and this woman and these two little kids, and the man had one of the kids on his shoulders and Alice's little girl said, 'I spy a family,' and I started to cry.

You know, I just started crying. And I went home and I said, 'The thing is, Joe, we never do fly off to Rome on a moments notice.' And that kitchen floor? Not once. It's this very cold, hard Mexican ceramic tile. Anyway, we talked about it for a long time and I said, this is what I want, and he said, well, I don't, and I said well, I guess it's over, and he left. And the thing is, I feel fine. I am over him, I mean, I really am over him. That was it for him, that was the most he could give, and every time I think about it, I am more and more convinced that I did the right thing.

'Eyes Wide Shut' - Alice

'Eyes Wide Shut' - Alice

That afternoon you and I made love and talked about our future, and our child. Later we were sitting on the balcony and he passed below us without looking up. Just the sight of him stirred me deeply and I thought if he wanted me, I could not have resisted.

I thought I was ready to give up you, the child, my whole future. And yet at the same time - if you can understand it--you were dearer to me than ever, and I stroked your forehead and kissed your hair, and at that moment my love for you was both tender and sad.

At dinner I wore a white rose and you said I was very beautiful. It might not have been just an accident that he and his friends sat near us. He didn't look up but I actually considered getting up, walking over to him like someone in a movie, saying, 'Here I am, my love, for whom I have waited--take me.'

Well, it was about then that the waiter brought him the envelope. He read it, turned pale, said goodbye to his friends - and glancing at me mysteriously, he left the room. I barely slept that night and woke up the next morning very agitated. I didn't know whether I was afraid he had left or that he might still be there...but by dinner I realized he was gone and I breathed a sigh of relief.

'Bull Durham' - Annie

'Bull Durham' - Annie

I believe in the church of baseball. I've tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there's 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there's 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. (she sighs) But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me.

I prefer metaphysics to theology. Y'see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring. Which makes it like sex. There's never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn't have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball. You just gotta relax and concentrate. Besides, I'd never sleep with a player hitting under .250. Not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle.

Y'see, there's a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I get a ballplayer alone, I'll just read Emily Dickenson or Walt Whitman to him. And the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. Of course, a guy'll listen to anything if he thinks it's foreplay.

I make them feel confident, and they make me feel safe -- and pretty. 'Course what I give them lasts a lifetime. What they give me lasts a 142 games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball. Who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for god's sake! It's a long season, and you gotta trust it. I've tried them all, I really have. And, the only church that feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball.

'True Romance' - Alabama Whitman

'True Romance' - Alabama Whitman

Amid the chaos of that day, when all I could hear was the thunder of gunshots, and all I could smell was the violence in the air, I look back and am amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record: you're so cool, you're so cool, you're so cool.

And sometimes Clarence asks me what I would have done if he had died, if that bullet had been two inches more to the left. To this, I always smile, as if I'm not going to satisfy him with a response. But I always do. I tell him of how I would want to die, but that the anguish and the want of death would fade like the stars at dawn, and that things would be much as they are now. Perhaps.

Except maybe I wouldn't have named our son Elvis.

The 10 Most Romantic Oscar Acceptance Speeches Of All Time

In time for the oscars, we list the 10 best acceptance speeches in academy awards romantic history..

  • Jenna Birch

Written on Feb 25, 2011

Sandra Bullock wins the 2010 Best Actress Oscar

Over the years, thanking your significant other has become commonplace in Oscar acceptance speeches. We now just expect to hear some spouse-gratitude in pretty much every acceptance speech. But luckily, scattered between all the average shout-outs are some super-sweet moments laced with a touch of romantic sentiment. With this list, we count down what we think are the 10 best acceptance speeches to date.

1. Tom Hanks. It was the second year in a row that Tom took home the Best Actor trophy when he won in 1994 for Forrest Gump . His win for Philadelphia the year prior was good, but we think he did one better with Gump —both in terms of performance and his acceptance speech. How could this adorable shout-out to wife Rita Wilson not earn him an Oscar nomination for best speech ever? "I am standing here because the woman I share my life with has taught me, and demonstrates for me every day, just what love is." Did we mention he totally welled up, also? So sweet.

2. Catherine Zeta-Jones. She was almost nine months pregnant when she scored the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Chicago . Catherine said, "And to my son Dylan, who is going to be watching at home, and to my husband, who I love and I share this award with you, along with this one, too," referring to her baby-to-be. Note to Natalie Portman if she takes the Academy Awards stage this year: This is the best way to acknowledge your man and your bun in the oven. Mrs. Michael Douglas did it so right.

3. Sandra Bullock. Right before the Jesse James affair fallout, Sandra won the Best Actress Oscar in 2010 for The Blind Side . Her mention of Jesse was brief, but incredibly gracious and heart-warming... only later did we find it heart- wrenching . She started by thanking her mom: "If I can take this moment to thank Helga B. for not letting me ride in cars with boys 'til I was eighteen, because she was right. I would've done what she said I was gonna do. And for reminding her daughters that… We are all deserving of love. So, to that trailblazer who allowed me to have that," at this point she tears up and points to Jesse in the crowd, who is also on the verge of water works, "and this [referring to the Oscar], and this, I thank you so much for this opportunity." Who would have known that in just a few days, their marriage would unravel? Is There Really A Best Actress Oscar Curse?

4. Jeff Bridges. Jeff was long overdue for that Oscar statuette when he won Best Actor last year for Crazy Heart . He showed gratitude to his wife with the utmost sincerity. "And I especially want to thank my gorgeous wife, Sue. We've been married 33 years. We have a beautiful family, three girls: Isabelle, Jessie and Hayley. Thank you, guys. I wouldn't be up here without you." Perfect words. And 33 years is pretty much 1,000 in Hollywood time, which makes his shout-out that much better.

5. The Man On Wire guys. James Marsh and Simon Chinn took home Best Documentary Feature Oscars in 2008, and wrapped up their speeches in just a few seconds. But they both managed to thank their wives and children in a memorable way. You know, just cover the important things. "Thank you to my dear wife Anne Mette and my lovely daughters Anna May and Ida," Marsh said. "This is for you, girls. Nothing's impossible." Chinn followed up with, "Time is short but I want to thank my beautiful wife Lara, my two boys Haroun and Jonah. May they continue to have big dreams."

6. Denzel Washington. Denzel nabbed the Best Actor Oscar for Training Day in 2001 and knocked our socks off with his speech when he thanked his wife and children. We knew he had a way with words. "My beautiful wife. I love you so much. You put up with me, in spite of myself. And my beautiful children at home. I told you if I lost tonight I would come home and we'd celebrate, and if I won tonight I would come home and we'd celebrate. Well, I'm coming home, we're celebrating."

7. Jeremy Irons. Sure, plenty of actors acknowledge their significant others, but how many give credit where credit is due in the actual act of achieving the Academy Award feat? Jeremy Irons did when he won his 1990 Best Actor statuette, and it was incredibly touching. He said, "And lastly, if I may cut the call of a telephone to London where my wife is trying to keep awake in a hotel bedroom, I wish you were here to help me carry this because you helped me win it." Aww. Romantic, indeed. 7 Hollywood Husband And Wife Oscar Winners

8. Simon Beaufoy. The screenwriter took home the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2008 for penning Slumdog Millionaire , and told us all how he used his writing talent to nab one more prize. "My wife Jane, for whom repressed English writers have to write love stories , because they can't really say what they mean."

9. Steven Spielberg. The legend won his first Best Director award in 1993 for Schindler's List . After confessing that he had never even held an Oscar before (gasp!), he went on to acknowledge Kate Capshaw for her role during the grueling shoot. "I want to thank my wife, who's here with me tonight, for rescuing me 92 days in a row in Krakow, Poland, last winter when things got just too unbearable." Make your wife seem like a superhero: win.

10. Cuba Gooding, Jr. During Cuba's emotional win for Jerry Maguire , he started his speech by taking care of the most essential shout-out first. Thank you, Tom Cruise… for the little reminder. "Tom said don't forget to thank your wife. I will never forget to thank my high school sweetheart and the mother of my children, Spencer and Mason. I love you, Sara."

Top 8 Most Romantic Movie Speeches

Get a compelling long read and must-have lifestyle tips in your inbox every sunday morning — great with coffee.

Say what you will about this “Hallmark” holiday, and all of the pink and red crap/lovely things that come along with it, here’s our roundup of the best, most romantic, aww-inducing words of love to ever grace the silver screen. Happy Valentine’s Day, Philly!

#8 Annie Hall Bet you didn’t think Woody Allen would end up on this list, didja? But here he is, at his most neurotic, charming best.

#7 An Affair to Remember The music swells, Cary Grant rushes to Deborah Kerr, her secret is revealed, and they embrace. Why don’t more people make dialogue—no, movies —like this anymore?

#6 The Notebook This proclamation of Noah’s love for Allie is … sniff… the beginning … sniff … of a really special … sniff … love story. Say what you will about schmaltzy Nicolas Sparks, but we dare anyone—anyone—to watch this gut-wrenching, heart-swelling love story without puddling up. Also: Ryan Gosling. (Starts at 3:30.)

#5 When a Man Loves a Woman (Sexy) Andy Garcia’s (sexy) devotion to his wife after they’ve gone through the ringer is just so genuine and sweet, and his (sexy) adoration of her feels so real, it’s almost weird he and Meg Ryan were never a real Hollywood couple.

#4 Pride and Prejudice Fact: No man, alive or dead, real or fictitious will ever be able to compete with Mr. Darcy. Ever.

#3 Princess Bride There is a moment in most women’s lives that they can point to as the minute they stopped wanting to be Snow White or Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella and started wanting to be Buttercup. A hunky blonde farm boy constantly promising, “As you wish”? We’d fling ourselves down that hill, too.

#2 Gone With the Wind Behold: The sex appeal of the handsome scoundrel.

#1 When Harry Met Sally For someone to love us, just as we are. Sigh.

BONUS: Say Anything The boombox scene. Obviously. We didn’t include this on our list because it’s more gesture than speech, but seriously—what words go better with impassioned teenage angst better than Peter Gabriel’s?

The 20 Best Movie Speeches of All Time

best-movie-speeches

Public speaking is not just a skill, it is an art form, one that very few can master.

For most, it is a source for anxiety. The sight of a large crowd and all the attention on one person can make even the most confident individual turn into a stuttering mess. However, when done correctly, they can inspire the very best and, sometimes, the very worst in humanity.

For these 20 films, the art of the speech is on full display, perfectly crafted by screenwriters and actors. Whether it is inspiring a team before the big game, soldiers before the big battle, students before entering the real world or as a rally cry against evil, corruption and the wicked, these speeches have transcended art and have entered the popular lexicon, sometimes as satire, but sometimes as a source of inspirations.

20. Invictus (2009) – “This is it! This is our Destiny!”

Following his release from prison in 1990, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) ran for government and became President of South Africa, effectively ending Apartheid. Despite this, the country still remained divided and tense. Mandela, however, saw hope in the form of the Springboks, South Africa’s National Rugby Union team.

After beating heavyweights France, Western Samoa and Australia in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the team faces the number one side: the Legendary New Zealand All Blacks. Overcoming the odds and securing a 15-12 lead, the team only has to hold out for seven minutes. Team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) addresses his team, telling them to listen to the crowd, all singing in unison, “Heads up, look into my eyes”.

This is a real team captain talking, his message still simple for a rugby team, “Defence, defence, defence”. Plain yet inspiring. Pienaar is portrayed as a man who knows exactly the history he is about create. When asked at the end of the game if he could have done it without the 60,000 South Africans present at the game, “We didn’t have the support of 60,000 South Africans…we had the support of 43 million South Africans”.

The finale with Pienaar receiving the Web Ellis Trophy from a Springbok Jersey wearing Mandela remains not only one of the great moments of sport, but a great moment in human history.

19. Henry V (1989) – “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers”

Very few actors have been able to transport the Bard to the big screen. Lawrence Olivier, Orson Welles, John Gielgud, Ian McKellan are just a few that have succeeded. Today, most of Shakespeare’s plays are adapted into contemporary settings, from fairy tale Venice Beach (Romeo + Juliet) to gangland Melbourne (Macbeth).

However, Kenneth Branagh’s performance in Henry V (following in the footsteps of Laurence Olivier) shows that one can still enjoy a classic, especially when watching the St Crispin’s Day speech.

“From this day to the ending of the world, but we shall be remembered – we few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother”. Branagh does not deliver this line with awe and gravitas, but rather with joy. A great smile burnt across his face as he rallies his men with promises of immortality.

Perhaps Henry’s heart is filled with joy at the concept of being side by side with his men at his longest hour, or is Branagh portraying a naive boy king who is yet to understand the true horrors of war? One thing is for certain: audience will seldom find such passion and truth in modern Shakespeare.

18. Rudy (1993) – “Since when are you the quitting kind”

There are only a handful of films that men will acknowledge crying in. Rudy (Sean Astin) is one of them. How can you keep a dry eye when watching every member of the University of Notre Dame’s football team walk into the head office before the final game of the year, offering their position up for Rudy.

But before this immortal moment, Rudy quit the team, frustrated at failing to make the final team list of the year. It is only after the dressing down he receives from stadium janitor Fortune (Charles S. Dutton) that he changes his mind, “Since when are you the quitting kind,” he barks at a defeated Rudy. This not only acts as the key turning point for the film, it reveals the true character of Fortune, finally breaking down the emotional brick wall he built between himself and others.

Fortune, just like Rudy, had an opportunity but threw it away out of anger, “And I guarantee a week won’t go by in your life you won’t regret walking out, letting them get the best of you”. There is not softness, no compassion. Not Fortune’s style. Instead he gives Rudy the kick up the arse he needs to continue fighting to earn the title of ‘Fighting Irish’.

17. Mr Smith Goes to Washington (1939) – “Well, I guess this is just another lost cause, Mr Paine”

There is no worse feeling than the moment you realise you have been beat. No second chances, no extra time. Nothing. You have lost. This was the moment that underdog Senator Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) not only realised he had lost but that he had been powerless all along. His first bill draws the wrath of a corrupt politician, not only destroying the bill, but turning Smith’s own constituents against him. Where he is shown the letters and telegrams sent demanding his resignation.

Beaten, exhausted and near collapse he seems resigned to his fate, “well, I guess this is just another lost cause, Mr Paine,” he mumbles, now barely conscious.

Instead, he finds one last ounce of energy, promising to continue the fight against political corruption, “You think I’m licked? Well, I’m not licked and I’m gonna stay right here and fight for this lost cause. Even if this room is filled with lies like these”. Mr Smith goes to Washington remains one of Frank Capra’s best and one of the truly great films on American politics.

16. Dead Poet’s Society (1989) – “Carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary”

A good teacher is not meant to simply teach, but rather inspire his students. Guide them into finding their passion and push them into pursuing it. Inspiring teachers are a popular market with films like Stand and Deliver, Mr. Holland’s Opus and October Sky. However, nothing matches the wit, charm and passion found in Dead Poet’s Society’s John Keating (Robin Williams).

Despite the strict and conservative foundations of the school they attend, former student turned poetry teacher Keating encourages his students to rip out the mathematic formula for rating poetry and to stand on their desk shouting poetry, much to the chagrin of the headmaster.

But Keating’s teaching philosophy is laid bare when he shows his students photos of the past alumni who attended, “They’re not that different from you, are they? Same haircuts, full of hormones”, before whispering his magnum opus, “Carpe diem”. Keating is not just teaching poetry, he is teaching the boys to become individuals. To not be constrained by the social mores that there very school is trying to implement.

15. Friday Night Lights (2004) – “I want you to put each other in your hearts forever, because forever is about to happen here”

So inspiring is the coach’s speech to his team that it has become almost cliché. Halftime, down by a lot, exhausted and low morale, the team finds solace in the inspirational words of the calm and collected coach. Friday Night Lights is part of this cliché, but it is one of the few that gets it right.

Only gaining entry into the state final by virtue of a coin toss, the Permian Panthers and their coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) know they are the underdogs. But more than that, Gaines knows for many of them it will be their last game. Some may get a chance to play College Football and there might be that lucky one who goes on to play for the NFL. However, many of these boys will graduate from high school and live out the rest of their life.

In the end, it comes down to how they remember the game, “And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn’t one more thing you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentlemen, then you’re perfect”. For the film, football is not about winning or losing, it is about character.

This is a great idea for a list but Jesus F-ck, this list is embarrassing. The author seems to think that a great movie speech has to always be a motivational one. I mean sh-t, half of his picks are nothing but generic, clichéd sports movies. All the motivational sports speeches have the same message, just worded differently. The only pass I’d give is to “Rocky” because boxing is arguably the purest metaphor of life– “it’s not about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward” is poetry.

If you wanna go for a sports speech, then why not one of the most iconic speeches in American history? 1. “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” –Lou Gehrig’s farewell speech, The Pride of the Yankees https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyT4mPBe4YQ

Peter Graves’ final speech in It Conquered the World 1956 (MST3K version)

“He learned almost too late that man is a feeling creature… and, because of it, the greatest in the universe. He learned too late for himself that men have to find their own way, to make their own mistakes. There can’t be any gift of perfection from outside ourselves. And when men seek such perfection… they find only death… fire… loss… disillusionment… the end of everything that’s gone forward. Men have always sought an end to the toil and misery, but it can’t be given, it has to be achieved. There is hope, but it has to come from inside — from man himself.”

The 30 Best Movie Inspirational Speeches

Cinema's most stirring oratories and spirit-raising team talks.

Gladiator

In times of trouble, you need a little help getting up and going, and film can often provide just that. Cinema has a long and storied history of providing great words of motivation and encouragement, sometimes for the characters' own benefit and occasionally to the audience. Here, we've chosen 30 of the best that should fit almost any occasion - but if you're really pressed for time, here are 40 condensed into a two-minute span { =nofollow}. If you have a little longer, read on!

The Great Dictator

Made at a time when the shadow of World War II was looming over Europe, Charlie Chaplin’s speech here – he’s playing a poor Jewish barber in disguise as a preening dictator and forced to address a Nuremberg-style rally – is a heartfelt plea for sanity and compassion in a time of madness. It’s the perfect antidote to extremism, and uses fiery rhetoric for good. If only we’d be able to pull this switcheroo in real life.

Buy The Great Dictator

Independence Day

Sure, there are cheesemongers with less cheese on offer than you see here and OK, the American jingoism doesn’t work at all for those of us not of a Yank disposition. But Bill Pullman’s slightly sheepish style blends here with steely determination, and he delivers the American St Crispin’s Day speech with conviction. Then, like any US President, he leaps into his fighter jet and flies off to battle aliens.

Buy Independence Day

For those who prefer a little humour in their motivational speeches, try the pitch-black streak in this opener, establishing Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius as a leader of men and a helluva guy. Galloping around the Legions in his cool armour and fur-lined cloak, you might question whether he really needs an entire army to back him up, but you’ll never doubt for a moment that they’d choose to follow him as he unleashes hell.

Buy Gladiator

Any Given Sunday

There’s a lot to be said for a little personal touch to leaven your high-flung rhetoric, and it’s a trick that Al Pacino uses well here, in the first of three American football speeches we’re going to include (hey, we can’t help it if the heavily-padded sport produces some great pep talks). Pacino’s troubled Tony D’Amato unveils his own problems with brutal honesty before using his own failures as a spur to rev on his team to greatness, speaking of team spirit and commitment as someone who has been known to suck at both.

Buy Any Given Sunday

Friday Night Lights

The film has been somewhat overshadowed nowadays by the equally good TV show that followed it, but watch Billy Bob Thornton here and be reminded that Kyle Chandler isn’t the only fundamentally decent man who can inspire a team of small-town boys to great efforts in pursuit of perfection. It’s also worth noting that he puts his emphasis here on excelling and not winning, making it clear that victory isn’t only measured by the scoreboard. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

Buy Friday Night Lights

It is, and will probably always be, the greatest inspirational speech ever made. It’s endlessly flexible, and works even when not declaimed by the classically trained (see this Renaissance Man version for proof). And it’s by Shakespeare, still the best writer in Hollywood. We have, controversially perhaps, chosen Branagh’s version over Olivier’s because the latter sounds a little shrill to the modern ear, while Branagh convinces us that he could convince his men. This speech, given by the titular monarch to a vastly outnumbered force about to fight the French, obviously works especially well for English people, but by God, Harry and St George, it’s universal in its rousing effect.

Buy Henry V

This is a little-known film in the UK but it’s revered in certain communities in the US. Sean Astin’s Rudy has overcome dyslexia, poor grades and his relatively small stature to win a place on Notre Dame’s famous Fighting Irish American football team. Only problem is that he’s never been off the bench, and with his final game approaching he threatens to quit the team if he isn’t allowed to play – prompting this inspirational speech / telling off from a friend who points out that he’s being whiny and entitled and needs to grow a pair. Soon he’s back on the bench and given a starting position when his entire team threatens not to play unless he’s given a shot.

An honourable mention for Hector’s pep talk but Achilles wins the battle of the inspirational speeches just as he wins their duel (c’mon, that’s not a spoiler; it’s in the 2000 year-old Iliad). This is a short snippet, but then godlike Achilles, the man-killer, is a man of action rather than words. And what he does say – focusing on lions, glory and the manifold abilities of his small, hand-picked group of Myrmidons – would convince a rock to fight any Trojan who dared oppose it.

Animal House

Not every inspirational speech is about trying to inspire his cohorts to kill people or batter them up and down the length of a football field. Some aspire to a higher goal. Some aspire to debauchery, drinking and probably nudity. Some aspire to party like 1999 might have done had it tried harder. Some aspire to a particular kind of grubby, deranged greatness. One such is John Belushi’s Bluto, and this is the greatest night of his life.

Buy Animal House

The Goonies

Come the hour, cometh the man – and in this case the man is a small, asthmatic Sean Astin, inspiring his fellow Goonies to never say die and to keep going in their quest to find treasure and save their community. In his yellow rain slicker and with his voice on the edge of breaking he may not look like a modern Napoleon, but he has the same effect on his exhausted and discouraged troopers. He’s so good you’ll almost forget to laugh at his mentions of One-Eyed Willy. snigger

Buy The Goonies

The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Death comes to us all, and Aragorn ain’t going to lie about it. But he still gees up his troops with the assurance that their civilisation will survive the onslaught of the forces of Mordor. Sure, they’re vastly outnumbered and sure, it seems likely that Frodo has failed in his quest to destroy the Ring in Mount Doom (especially if you’re watching the Extended Edition) but Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn ensures that no one will be quitting any time soon. Not this day!

Buy The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King

Bill Murray isn’t usually the guy you turn to for sincere, inspiring words of comfort. He’s more the type to puncture any attempt at same, and probably to fast-talk his opponents into giving up and going for a karaoke session while he’s about it. But after his heart grows two sizes during the course of Scrooged, he makes a plea for kindness and niceness from all mankind. He still does it in a recognisably Murray, manic and scattershot way, but that just makes him all the more compelling. Someone hire this man to play Santa Claus.

Buy Scrooged

Stirring sports speeches are limited to American Football. Miracle On Ice chronicles the based-on-truth tale of how the US Olympic hockey team triumphed over their Russian rivals. Kurt Russell's the speech-giver here, playing coach Herb Brooks. "Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world," he tells them. You'll feel a swell of pride and inspiration too.

Rent Miracle

Deep Blue Sea

“You think water’s fast? You should see ice.” Samuel L. Jackson’s been around the block more than once, and he’s seen the worst of mankind. It’s with the weight of that history behind him that he takes charge and orders his fellow survivors of a marine disaster to start pulling together and quit arguing. His speech also has what is, unquestionably, the greatest punchline on this list. Still, it achieves the desired effect once everyone has quit screaming.

Buy Deep Blue Sea

If in doubt, steal from classical history, something that David Wenham’s Dilios demonstrates with aplomb here. In actual history, the one survivor of the 300 was so shamed by his survival that he executed a suicidal one-man attack on the Persians at this Battle of Plataea, but Wenham seems more in control and also like he has quite a bit of back-up. “The enemy outnumber us a paltry three-to-one,” notes Dilios triumphantly. Why, it was hardly worth the Persians turning up.

Good Will Hunting

Here’s an inspirational speech well-suited to highly-paid sports teams and the enormously talented. Ben Affleck’s argument is, basically, that if you’re lucky enough to get extraordinary chances in your life, it’s your duty to the rest of us schmoes to actually take those chances and run with them as far as you can. If you can get past the shellsuit and the hair, he’s basically Yoda-like in his wisdom.

Buy Good Will Hunting

Most people only remember the last word – “Freedom!” – but the rest of the speech is pretty killer too. Mel Gibson’s William Wallace starts off by puncturing his own legend, and acknowledges the urge to cut and run in the face of a far superior English force. But then he reminds his men what they’d be missing if they do, and soon they’re all back on side and facing down the hated English. By the end of this speech, you’ll all hate the English with them – even if you are one.

Buy Braveheart

Coach Carter

You’d expect the inspiration in this basketball film to come from the titular no-nonsense coach, played by a fiery Samuel L. Jackson. But in fact it’s one of his players who nabs the best lines, as he and the team sit studying to keep their grades as high as their scores. There is a little cheating here: Rick Gonzalez’ Timo actually steals his inspirational speech from Marianne Williamson (it’s sometimes wrongly attributed to Nelson Mandela) but he delivers it well so we’re going to allow it.

Buy Coach Carter

While it’s his skills in the ring that he is most lauded for, Rocky Balboa is something of a poet to boot. An incoherent one, certainly; a poet who says “I guess” a lot more often than Wordsworth might like, but a poet nevertheless. His moving words here, as he single-handedly ends the Cold War and ushers in a new era of East-West relations, are just one example. Another is…

Buy Rocky IV

Rocky Balboa

If his last speech was incoherent – in fairness, his rhythm may have been thrown off by the translator – this one verges on incomprehensible when he really gets going. Still, there’s real passion in Rocky’s plea for one last shot and an argument that’s applicable to all sorts of situations of institutional injustice or unfeeling bureaucracy.

Buy Rocky Balboa

Stand And Deliver

Those who've watched him on the modern Battlestar Galactica know that Edward James Olmos is a past master at giving speeches. This is him from a little earlier in his career, playing Jaime Escalante, a real-life teacher who inspired his students to stop dropping out and start taking calculus seriously. Here, he's handing out as pop quiz, so anyone having to home school their kids can take note.

Rent Stand And Deliver

Good Night, And Good Luck

This one is couched particularly at media moguls, but there’s a call for excellence and the highest moral standards here that we would all do well to live by. David Strathairn’s Edward R. Murrow, in a speech lifted directly from Murrow’s actual address to the Radio and Television News Directors Association in 1958, pleads for TV to inform as well as entertain. We feel that if more people saw this speech, Made In Chelsea would be cancelled immediately and reality TV would be banned, so spread the word!

Buy Good Night, And Good Luck

Anyone who has ever flirted with a romantic interest knows the risk of being knocked back, and Jon Favreau's Mike is experiencing a crisis of confidence. Luckily for him, he has Vince Vaughn's Trent to talk him back into the game, and Alex Désert's Charles to remind him that he's so money. He's a bear! And she's a bunny! Everything is going to be fine.

Buy Swingers

Charles Dutton’s second appearance on this list, after Rudy, sees him once again reminding lesser men (and women) to get with the programme, pull the finger out and generally stand up and be counted. But this time they’re facing unstoppable acid-blooded xenomorphs rather than American football players, so he has to be extra-emphatic.

Buy Alien 3

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End

Remarkably few women get to deliver inspirational speeches in movies – apparently they’re relegated to clapping admiringly from the sidelines. Thank goodness for Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley) who is elected King of the Pirates and rouses her troops into action for a last-ditch fight against the Lord Beckett’s overwhelming forces, led by the Flying Dutchman. She may not have quite the lungs of others on the list, but there’s no doubting her conviction as she calls for them to “Hoist the colours!” – the Jolly Roger – and sail out one last time.

Buy Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End

The Replacements

One doesn’t expect lengthy speeches from Keanu “Woah” Reeves (although he’s done his share of Shakespeare actually) but he’s rarely more succinct and to the point than in this chat with his fellow Replacements. And in fact there are few speeches more likely to be effective in motivating an exhausted team for one last effort. “Chicks dig scars” could be used by virtually every example here to drive on the listeners.

Buy The Replacements

Bill Murray at it again, and once more an unconventional speech. This time out, he's John Winger, a loser who decides that he and best pal Russell Ziskey (Harold Ramis) will join the Army. Stuck with a group of oddballs, and, after a night of partying, decides to rally his fellow troops. It works... Sort of. But Murray's typically laconic style works well for the speech itself.

Rent or buy Stripes

The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King

All seems lost for Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin again) and Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) as they lie, exhausted, on the slopes of Mount Doom. Frodo’s beyond endurance and raving as the influence of the Ring grows ever stronger on him, and his desperate straits drive Sam to one last push. It’s barely a speech, really – he uses his words better here – but there are few moments more inspirational.

Buy The Lord Of The Rings: Return of The King

The Shawshank Redemption

A quiet moment between Tim Robbins' Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman's Red became one of the more memorable moments in Shawshank , a movie with no shortage of them. And for those who are spending more time inside than perhaps they might be used to, Andy's musing on what he would do if he got out of prison are inspirational in themselves, even before he gets to that iconic line.

Rent The Shawshank Redemption

Avengers: Endgame

Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, is not shy of breaking out speech mode when the moment calls for it. And inspiring the Avengers as they're about to embark on a trip through space and time to retrieve the Infinity Stones certainly seems like that moment. "Whatever it takes," indeed.

Most Romantic Movie Quotes of All Time

S ome of the newest additions to the romance genre are cute rom-coms like Netflix's You People and Universal's Ticket to Paradise . These aren't exceptionally unique films within the genre, but they do add to the collection of movies with some of the most beloved tropes. On the other hand, there are far more famous romantic films out there.

While some of the most romantic movies are unexpected, such as cheesy rom-coms like Sweet Home Alabama , others like The Notebook and Titanic are staples that every fan is familiar with. Whether it's from a cute rom-com or a groundbreaking romance, the most romantic quotes in these movies are those that express unwavering love, romantic gestures, and heartfelt realizations.

Updated by Ajay Aravind on November 22, 2023: The romance genre has existed for hundreds of years, although the invention of cinema expanded the genre's scope far beyond books ever could. Some of the greatest romantic movies of all time also have unique quotes. As such, we've updated this article with some more relevant information about the best romantic movie quotes.

"So I Can Kiss You Anytime I Want."

10 Best Female Romantic Comedy Stars

This quote from Sweet Home Alabama might not seem like the most romantic thing ever heard. However, in the context of the story, it is an adorable line. As children, Melanie asks Jake why he would want to marry her, and he replies, " So I can kiss you anytime I want. " While this technically assumes his agency over her, fans don't really see it that way.

This is because Jake asks Melanie the same question at the end of the movie, after they have been reunited as adults. A lifetime love story may seem like a cliché in the romance genre, but it certainly makes for a wholesome, well-rounded ending to Sweet Home Alabama .

Sweet Home Alabama

A young woman who has reinvented herself as a New York City socialite must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband after seven years of separation.

"To Me, You Are Perfect."

Love, Actually wasn't positively received among critics, but it is a beloved Christmas romance movie that continues to have a dedicated audience. This is one of the most popular ensemble rom-coms ever, featuring nine different love stories within a two-hour runtime.

Arguably the most adorable scene is with Mark (Andrew Lincoln) and Juliet (Keira Knightley). Though Juliet just married Mark's friend Peter, he brings her a message at the door via cue cards and a boombox. One of the cards reads, " To me, you are perfect. " This line isn't technically spoken, but it's still one of the most heartwarming and bittersweet lines in Love, Actually .

From the creatives behind Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill comes Love Actually, a romantic comedy set during Christmas time loaded with an all-star cast of characters.

The 10 Best Romantic Ships in Horror The real-life story Titanic is based on is even more heartbreaking than the couple's story in the movie, for obvious reasons. Still, this film succeeded in crafting delightful and well-rounded characters whom the audience would be attached to by the time the ship inevitably hit the iceberg.

Jack says this emotional line when he's in the freezing water of the North Atlantic, close to death. While it's still a hot debate among movie fans if Jack could fit on that piece of debris Rose was floating on, this heart-wrenching scene in Titanic remains one of the most romantic moments in cinematic history.

A seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.

"You Will Never Age for Me, nor Fade, nor Die."

William shakespeare.

Shakespeare in Love is an unorthodox movie that mixes a fictional retelling of the titular playwright's life with that of a loose Romeo and Juliet adaptation. This creative choice almost makes it seem as though Shakespeare's real-life experiences inspired the historical tragedy.

While the movie is often more humorous than it is outright romantic, the scene in which William and Viola say their goodbyes — and he says this line — is undoubtedly inspiring. That said, Shakespeare in Love is far from historically accurate. And yet, it succeeds in portraying one of the most well-known writers in history in an impactful and loving way.

Shakespeare in Love

The world's greatest ever playwright, William Shakespeare, is young, out of ideas and short of cash, but meets his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays.

10 Biggest Romantic Third Wheels in Film

In the same vein of loose Shakespeare adaptions is the iconic '90s teen rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You . The love story wasn't particularly shocking in this The Taming of the Shrew rendition, but it was far more satisfying than the source material.

After Patrick deceived Kat and broke her heart, she read a poem in English class that ended with this heartfelt line. This is one of the most gripping scenes in a teen romance movie, with Julia Stiles' performance making the audience wholeheartedly believe she was truly heartbroken and in love all at once.

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and is a romantic comedy film starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger.

"I'm Scared of Walking Out of This Room and Never Feeling the Rest of My Whole Life the Way I Feel When I'm With You."

Frances "baby" houseman.

Dirty Dancing is more of a coming-of-age narrative than anything else. However, the beloved romance between Johnny and Baby has gone down as one of the most amazing love stories in cinematic history. The star-crossed lovers' trope has been used countlessly in romance movies, but this film proves that it works if done correctly.

Baby says this line to Johnny during an earnest, emotionally driven conversation right before they begin their whirlwind summer romance. The vulnerability and honesty in this Dirty Dancing scene are truly captivating, making it one of the best romance lines in the genre.

Brokeback Mountain is an iconic Ang Lee movie from the early 2000s, and one of the few solely focusing on the complex romance between two men. While herding sheep on the titular Brokeback Mountain, cowboys Ennis and Jack strike up an emotional relationship that turns sexual. Set in the '60s, this is a heartbreaking love story with both men struggling with their sexuality and love for one another.

In an emotional disagreement between the two, Jack says this line to Ennis, expressing how complicated his feelings are for his lover as well as the emotional hardship of his mindset. Although one of the most moving LGBTQ+ love stories , Brokeback Mountain has a sad ending with one of the most emotional closing scenes in film history.

10 Best British Romantic Comedy Movies

It's no surprise that one of the most famous love stories of all time has one of the most romantic quotes ever. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice plotline is an obvious cliché in the genre today, but it's known for establishing the framework of the classic enemies-to-lovers trope.

In this movie, the independent Elizabeth Bennet begins a complicated relationship with Mr. Darcy due to her parent's insistence on marriage. Mr. Darcy says this quote to Elizabeth in a climactic scene, not only expressing his love for her but finally giving the audience relief from the intense back-and-forth.

Movies adapted from Nicholas Spark novels are occasionally cheesy, but there's no doubt the writer has an exceptional talent for moving romances. In A Walk to Remember , a seemingly ordinary teen romance plot turns into one of the most emotional and devastating romance flicks.

There are many moments throughout A Walk to Remember that can move a viewer to tears, including this internalized line from Landon at the very end of the film. This plot is a representation of everlasting love, emphasized by how he still feels about his first love years after he lost her.

The Notebook further establishes the range of Nicholas Spark's influence on the romance genre. Young Allie and Noah seem like a forever story, but they're split between social classes. After Noah comes back from war, however, their romance slowly rekindles.

This is a unique line in the sense that Noah and Allie are actually arguing at the time, but he manages to still make his speech particularly poignant. This quote from Noah in The Notebook highlights the unpredictability of love and how it doesn't have to be perfect to work

Cory: "Ever since I was young I never really understood anything about the world, and I never understood anything that happened in my life. You’re the best friend I ever had."

Lily: "I love you because you’re funny and you make me feel loved and you make me feel safe. And for our anniversary you gave me a sweatshirt that says, 'Lily and Marshall: Rockin’ It Since ‘96'... but the main reason I love you is you make me happy. You make me happy all the time."

Parks & Recreation: Leslie and Ben

Ben: "In my time working for the state government, my job sent me to 46 cities in 11 years. I lived in villages with eight people, rural farming communities, college towns. I was sent to every corner of Indiana. And then I came here. And I realized that this whole time, I was just wandering around, everywhere, just looking for you."

Andy : "You are the most awesome person I have ever known in my entire life. I vow to protect you from danger. And I don’t care if I have to fight an ultimate fighter, or a bear, or him (points to a random guest), or your mom. I would take them down. I’m getting mad right now even telling you. I wanna spend the rest of my life, every minute, with you, and I am the luckiest man in the galaxy."

One Tree Hill: Haley and Nathan

Haley : “Nathan, it’s been said that there’s one word that will free us from the weight and pain of life, and that word is love—and I believe that. That doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been hard or that it won’t be. It just means that I’ve found a stillness and a bravery in myself with you. You make me brave, and I will love you until the end of time. This, I vow today.”

Nathan : “Last year, we sat on the beach, and I told you how much I loved you and how I’ll always, always protect you. That day that we believed that this would work, but I don’t think anybody understood the love that I had for you because if they did, they would have never doubted us. So, I want to marry you all over again for most of our world because today, I can look into your eyes, and my love for you only grows. It’s even stronger now. Our love will never waiver. This, I vow to you today and always."

Glee: Kurt and Blaine and Santana and Brittany (Double Wedding)

Kurt : "Blaine, I’m a man who’s always lived in the shadows. And everyone who’s come into my life has always tried to pull me out into the sun or push me back into the darkness."

Santana : "I've been bullied, outed, misunderstood."

Blaine : "I honestly thought that I would never find real love."

Brittany: "The world’s been so scary and confusing. It was just too fast, made me feel dumb just because my brain worked differently."

Kurt : "And then you came along. And even if someone had told me that it wasn’t gonna work out and that at the end of all of our struggling and all of our work, it would just end in heartache."

Blaine : "I would have said yes."

Santana : "A thousand times yes."

Brittany : "I would've suffered it all just for the tiny chance to be standing up here, marrying you."

Glee: Carole and Burt

Burt : "You know that saying 'when God closes a door, He opens a window?' Well, sometimes out of nowhere He'll do you one better—He'll kick a whole wall down. He grabbed me by the shoulders and He pointed me toward this woman right here and He said 'There she is. Go get her.' You’re everything, Carole. Words can’t describe you. You’re everything. And I will love you 'til the day I die."

Carole : "Oh, hey ... I’m lucky ... Most women when they get married, they get one man. I get two. One of you saved me from my wardrobe. The other one just saved me. Kurt, you are an amazing person. I’m not only getting a son, I’m getting a friend. Finn, I know you were resistant at first, but I am so proud of you. I’ve watched you grow into a man. But I think I’m most proud that you’ve become a brother to Kurt. We are four people becoming a family."

Schitt's Creek: Patrick and David

Patrick : "David, I can't believe this is happening. So, I'll keep this very short because I think you know that I would climb a thousand mountains for you. And we'll linger on, time can't erase a feeling this strong, no way you'll ever shake me, ooh, darling 'cause you'll always be my baby!"

David : "Patrick, I have never liked a smile as much as I like yours. I've never felt as safe as I feel when I'm with you. I've never known love like I do when we're together. It's not been an easy road for me but knowing that you will be there for me at the end makes everything okay. Patrick Brewer, you are my happy ending."

I always knew you were the one that could look into my eyes and see my soul. I don't question your commitment to us and I know there's nothing we can't work through. And I accept you as my partner and as my best friend above all others. It's a miracle to find the kind of peace and happiness that you've given me and in honor of that miracle, I pledge before our family and friends to love and to cherish you forever."

Donna: "I look at you and I see my best friend, your energy and your passion inspire me in ways I never thought possible. Your inner beauty is so strong, that I no longer fear being myself. I no longer fear at all. I never thought that I could find someone that I could love that would love me back unconditionally. Then I realize that, although we were often apart, you were always with me and you were my soulmate . You give me purpose when I feel I have none. Without you my soul would be empty, my heart broken, my being incomplete. I thank God every day that you were brought into my life, and I thank you for loving me."

ER: Abby and Luka

Luka : "Be my wife. I offer myself with all my faults and strengths. We'll help each other when we need help and work together to raise our son. I choose you as the person I will love and honor for the rest of my days."

Abby : "First of all, I love you. I do. And you've helped me through a lot. We got here together with a beautiful little boy. I was thinking of a poem before when I was getting ready. I think it starts, I carry your heart in my heart. I'm never without it. Anywhere I go, you go. I'm probably messing the whole thing up, but I think the end goes, and this is the wonder that keeps the stars apart. I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart. So I guess what I'm saying is, let's just try to love each other and persevere."

I love you."

Screen Rant

Glen powell & sydney sweeney's best anyone but you trick wasn't even in the movie.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney starred as the leads of the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You, and the actors worked hard to promote the film.

  • Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney used romance rumors to boost marketing for "Anyone But You," similar to how their characters pretended to date in the movie.
  • Despite rumors, Powell and Sweeney did not have an affair during filming in Australia.
  • The scandalous rumors promoted interest in the rom-com, contributing to its box-office success, as Powell and Sweeney did a much better job of fake dating than Ben and Bea did in "Anyone But You."

Anyone But You was an unexpected overwhelming success, leading many to believe that rom-coms are making a comeback, and many have Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney to thank for that because of their impressive work promoting the movie behind the scenes. The 2023 romantic comedy, directed by Will Gluck, tells a classic story ( inspired by William Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing ) of two people pretending to date who end up falling for one another. Despite its clichés, Anyone But You was received well by audiences as it was fun and the chemistry between Powell and Sweeney was obvious.

Powell starred as Ben and Sweeney as Bea in the cast of Anyone But You , the aforementioned two characters who scheme a fake dating plot for two reasons — to make Margaret jealous (Ben's motive) and to stop Bea's parents from trying to get Bea and her ex-fiancé Jonathan back together (Bea's motive). However, as these things always go, Ben and Bea develop real feelings for one another while pretending to be in a relationship. As it turns out, life (sort of) imitated art regarding Powell and Sweeney's marketing ploy.

Glen Powell & Sydney Sweeney's Romance Rumors Were Better Than Tricks Used In Anyone But You

Rumors claimed glen powell & sydney sweeney were having an affair.

While filming Anyone But You in Australia , rumors about a possible romance between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney spread across the internet. Powell was thought to still be dating model Gigi Paris at the time (the couple split while Powell was filming the 2023 rom-com), and Sweeney has been engaged to businessman Jonathan Davino since 2022. So, the gossip was scandalous, to say the least, and ultimately, unfounded and false. However, that didn't stop Powell and Sweeney from capitalizing on and leaning into the romance rumors. During an interview with the New York Times , Powell explained:

"Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. Sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart."

Powell and Sweeney took advantage of the gossip and wisely used it to fuel Anyone But You 's marketing plan. While many were speculating if the two were having an affair after meeting on the set of the 2023 rom-com, the stars were scheming behind the scenes (sort of like their characters in the movie). Consequently, Powell and Sweeney's tricks had a much bigger impact than their characters' fake dating plan in the film.

Anyone But You Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play

How anyone but you's rumor trick paid off, anyone but you was a box office success.

The possibility of a scandalous affair between the two leads of an upcoming rom-com undoubtedly drew many more eyes to Anyone But You , likely leading to more ticket sales and a higher box office gross. Of course, many factors contributed to Will Gluck's 2023 rom-com's $219 million box office earnings and 87 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes . But the rumors regarding a romance between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney (and the actors' successful ploy to lean into the bit to market the movie) had a significant role in Anyone But You 's success.

Anyone But You is available to stream on Netflix.

Anyone But You

Anyone But You is a romantic comedy by director Will Gluck starring Sydney Sweeny and Glen Powell. Sweeny and Powell star as Bea and Ben, two strangers with an incredible first date that goes sour following one incident at the tail end. Thinking the worst is behind them, the two are roped into a destination wedding in Sydney, Australia, where they'll have to pretend to be a couple despite absolutely hating each other.

‘challengers’ reviews: does zendaya tennis movie score with critics.

Cropped "Challengers" movie poster

Challengers — Zendaya’s new romantic sports drama set in the world of tennis — is new in theaters.

Playing in previews Thursday night and opening nationwide in theaters Friday, Challengers is the hotly anticipated movie from the Euphoria star that was originally scheduled to open in theaters on September 15, 2023.

However, due to disruptions in the entertainment industry during the Screen Actors Guild strike against the studios last summer into fall, Challengers ’ studio, Amazon MGM, pushed back the release date to April 26.

Directed by Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers tracks the love triangle between three gifted tennis players — Tashi Duncan ( Zendaya ), Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) — and hops back and forth between the time Patrick and Art met Tashi in 2006 and the film’s crucial tennis match in 2019.

The film begins with the 2019 match between Patrick and Art — once close friends and doubles partners in the youth tennis circuit — who have become bitter rivals after Toshi begins dating Patrick. Art — who was just as smitten as Patrick was when they both met Tashi 13 years before — never lost his love for her and they marry and have a child together after she suffers a crushing career-ending injury.

The Best Romantic Comedy Of The Last Year Just Hit Netflix

In addition to marrying Art, Tashi is the tennis pro’s coach. However, since Art has a confidence problem that may prevent him from reaching the pinnacle of his career, she talks her husband into entering the Challenger tournament, which includes Patrick. Unfortunately, that means Art will eventually face his old friend in a match and the two will need confront their past wounds.

At the time of publication, Challengers had received a stellar reception from critics on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes , where it has earned a 92 percent “fresh” rating on the site’s Tomatometer based on 157 reviews.

What Are Top Critics Saying About ‘Challengers’?

Challengers has scored consistently high with some of the biggest outlets in the nation, particularly with the industry’s trade publications.

Calling Luca Guadagnino’s sports-romance combo “hip, sexy and ridiculously overheated,” Variety critic Peter Debruge has mostly positive things to say about Challengers . Debruge not only praises the trio of leads — he calls Zendaya’s performance “astonishing” — but he’s also impressed by Luca Guadagnino’s creative filmmaking, especially in scenes on the tennis court.

“Whether audiences identify as Team Patrick or Team Art, Guadagnino pulls a risky yet inspired trick, effectively scoring the winning shot himself,” Debruge wrote.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter is just as high on Challengers , as he begins his review by writing how the film is “smart, seductive and bristling with sexual tension.” Rooney also calls the chemistry between Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist “off the charts.”

Like Debruge, Rooney praises the cinematography of Challengers as well as the film’s “peppy dialogue,” even though he writes, “In terms of nuts-and-bolts narrative, Challengers is relatively thin.”

Art (Mike Faist), Tashi (Zendaya) and Patrick (Josh O'Connor) in a scene from "Challengers."

Not every critic is as enthusiastic about Challengers as Debruge, Rooney or their Rotten Tomatoes counterparts.

Mark Feeney gives Challengers 2.5 stars (out of four) in his review for the Boston Globe pointing out that, unlike the Will Smith tennis movie King Richard , Challengers is “only masquerading as a tennis movie — extensively masquerading to be sure.”

Instead, Feeney said Challengers “really is a soap opera, a lively and very trickily structured one.”

Richard Whittaker of the Austin Chronicle , meanwhile, slams Challengers in his 1 star (out of 5) review, saying the movie is a “double fault after double fault.”

In particular, Whittaker goes after Guadagnino and his screenwriter, saying the director “rolls into the courtside thriller with all the sex appeal of a gym sock and a lousy script by Justin Kuritzkes, the poor man’s Whit Stillman. It’s trashy Eurosleaze with none of the sumptuous debauchery.”

Challengers is now in theaters.
