Business/Management Dissertation & Theses

While the ideas we’ve presented above are a decent starting point for finding a business-related research topic, they are fairly generic and non-specific. So, it helps to look at actual dissertations and theses to see how this all comes together.

Below, we’ve included a selection of research projects from various management-related degree programs (e.g., MBAs, DBAs, etc.) to help refine your thinking. These are actual dissertations and theses, written as part of Master’s and PhD-level programs, so they can provide some useful insight as to what a research topic looks like in practice.

  • Sustaining Microbreweries Beyond 5 Years (Yanez, 2022)
  • Perceived Stakeholder and Stockholder Views: A Comparison Among Accounting Students, Non-Accounting Business Students And Non-Business Students (Shajan, 2020)

  • Science Data Sharing: Applying a Disruptive Technology Platform Business Model (Edwards, 2022)
  • Impact of Hurricanes on Small Construction Business and Their Recovery (Sahu, 2022)

Looking at these titles, you can probably pick up that the research topics here are quite specific and narrowly-focused , compared to the generic ones presented earlier. This is an important thing to keep in mind as you develop your own research topic. That is to say, to create a top-notch research topic, you must be precise and target a specific context with specific variables of interest . In other words, you need to identify a clear, well-justified research gap.

The Master’s degree in technology-based business development (MSc in Engineering degree programme) is now offered as a Master's degree programme for working professionals. The Master's degree programme for working professionals is a part-time degree programme that takes place over four years. The programme is aimed at people who work alongside their studies. Students do not have to pay a tuition fee. Students on the Master's degree programme for working professionals are not entitled to a student grant under the Education Grant and Loan Scheme in Denmark.

The content of the Master's degree programme for working professionals is the same as on the two-year full-time degree programme. This means that students will be taking courses with other full-time students. The Master's degree programme for working professionals comprises compulsory courses corresponding to 60 ECTS credits, elective courses corresponding to 30 ECTS credits and a Master's thesis corresponding to 30 ECTS credits. The academic regulations contain a model that shows how the workload is equally distributed over four years. However, students are allowed to register for or withdraw from courses provided they keep in mind whether courses should be taken in a recommended order; when the courses are offered; and whether he or she still meets the specific rules pertaining to active enrolment and the maximum degree completion time.

To enrol on the Master's degree programme for working professionals in technology-based business development, you must:

  • Meet the formal admission requirements. These are the same requirements that apply to the two-year Master’s degree programme.
  • Be employed in a company for at least 25 hours per week on average solely on the basis of your Bachelor’s degree, or be an entrepreneur undertaking relevant work tasks alongside your studies.

Each semester, you must be able to document that you are still employed alongside your studies for at least 25 hours a week on average. If your employment is terminated or reduced to less than the required number of hours, you will be transferred to the two-year full-time degree programme - if possible from the start of the next semester.

You can read more about the framework for the Master's degree programme for working professionals and the documentation requirements here:  https://masters.au.dk/masters-degree-programme-for-working-professionals

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants are not eligible to apply

At present, non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens without a permanent residence permit in Denmark are not eligible to apply for admission to the Master’s programme in Technology Based Business Development for Working Professionals. This is due to the fact that it is not possible to obtain a study residence permit in Denmark on the basis of part-time studies. If at some point the regulations regarding Master’s programmes for working professionals are accommodated to meet the needs of non-EU/EEA students for a study residence permit, this page will be updated to reflect the adjusted regulations.

Programme structure

The degree programme is a part-time programme that takes place over four years with courses equivalent to 15 ECTS credits per semester. However, it is possible to complete the Master's thesis in six months rather than a year and thus complete the programme in 3.5 years. It is also possible to take courses equivalent to more than 15 ECTS credits in one semester, as long as you take into account when the courses are offered and whether courses should be taken in a recommended order.

To be actively enrolled, you are required to pass a minimum of 20 ECTS credits per year.

The maximum degree completion time is 4.5 years from the time you commence your studies.

Please find descriptions of the individual courses under ‘Degree programme structure’

The degree programme content and course titles may be subject to changes as new academic regulations are currently being developed.

master thesis business development

Business Development and Entrepreneurship

The Master’s thesis is an important part of your Master's Programme. The thesis is written individually and in English.

Below you can find information about the time schedule and deadlines, the regulations, the U.S.E. thesis award, and some tips.

Time schedule

Kick-off event for each master programme is organized, usually between 16 and 30 November, but deviations are possible. You will be informed about

  • Potential thesis topics
  • Potential supervisors and second readers
  • Guidelines in case you want to propose your own topic
  • Opportunities for a research internship in combination with your thesis

Matchmaking with your supervisor and the second reader takes place in December-January. The second reader will be involved in the process to (i) to grade and provide feedback on the research proposal and set up of the thesis, and (ii) read and independently grade the final manuscript. Grades for both will be based on the independent assessments of the supervisor and second reader; the supervisor consults with the second reader to establish a final grade that will be made available to the student.

Period 3 (5 EC)

Research proposal. At the end of period 3 you are supposed to have written a full research proposal. This implies you have done extensive literature research, addressed a research gap, drafted research questions, and develop a plan for empirical data analysis. You are usually also supposed to have collected the empirical  material for your thesis, or at minimum, developed a plan for data collection.

You present and/or discuss your draft research proposal with your supervisor and second reader.

Deadline to upload your research proposal via Osiris Case. The proposal will be graded (weight 10%). If you upload the research proposal too late, or not at all, the research proposal will be graded with a 1. When your progress is insufficient at this point, you will have to put in substantial extra effort in period 4 to be able to finish your thesis in time.

Deadline for supervisor (including consultation with second reader, resulting in the final grade) to finish the assessment in Osiris Case.

Period 4 (10 EC)

Develop and finalise thesis. You collect remaining data and literature, analyse data, and write your thesis.

June  17-21

You present and/or discuss your draft thesis in a meeting or final seminar organized by your supervisor and second reader, and receive final comments.

Deadline to upload the final version of your thesis in Osiris Case. The thesis will be graded (weight 90%).

Deadline for supervisor to finish the assessment (including consultation with second reader, resulting in the final grade) in Osiris Case.

Number of meetings

The thesis process has at least four compulsory meetings/deadlines:

  • April 8-11: discuss your draft research proposal and full literature review
  • April 12: hand in your final resarch proposal and full literature review online via Osiris Case. Specific instructions will be supplied on Blackboard. Concerning the literature review, consider coverage of at least 20 relevant academic papers as a reference point. However, your supervisor may set other expectations during the process.
  • June 17-21: present/discuss your draft thesis
  • June 28: hand in your final thesis online via Osiris Case (specific instructions will be supplied)

Theses need to be handed in via OSIRIS Student  (tab Cases > Thesis Assessment (U.S.E.)) to the thesis supervisor and second reader. The supervisor checks the thesis on plagiarism, grades it, and digitally fills in the two evaluation forms ( evaluation form 10% and evaluation form 90% ). You can check the evaluation forms in OSIRIS Student  (after your supervisor finalises the assessment and determined the grade in Osiris).

  • For your research proposal no retake is possible.

For your master thesis , a retake is possible. Conditions:

  • Your unrounded final score (10%*proposal + 90%*thesis) is less than 5.5, but at least 4.0.
  • Your supervisor will provide you with feedback/guidance of what to improve, but only once. Afterwards no additional feedback or guidance can be claimed from the supervisor (holiday season).
  • You can resubmit your master thesis only once.
  • The deadline to upload your revised thesis is August 4, after which the grade will be handed in by the supervisor at the latest by August 18.
  • The rounded final grade for the thesis cannot be higher than a 6; this is only to be fair to students finishing in shorter time.

In case you do not succeed in finishing your thesis with a passing grade in semester 2, including the retake opportunity, you can consult the study advisor and submit a request to redo the thesis with a new topic and supervisor in period 1+2 of the next academic year if you think the following requirements apply:

  • You have worked on the thesis in the regular period, but did not receive a passing grade.
  • You have put in enough effort. The thesis evaluation form, including the written feedback by your supervisor, serves as the basis for this and your thesis grade is at least 4.
  • You have finished all other courses of your master programme.

The request needs to be made ultimately on September 15 (or when this is a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before September 15). The study advisor will contact the Board of Examiners (BoE). The BoE takes the final decision.

If your unrounded final grade is less than 4.0, no retake is possible. You will have to enroll again, and start with a new topic and supervisor in November 2024. Thus, you will then develop a new thesis in period 3 and 4 of the academic year 2024/25.

In some circumstances the July deadline may be extended. See ‘Regulations’ (hereafter).

U.S.E. thesis regulations Academic Masters 2022-2023

  • All theses must be written and finished within semester 2.
  • All theses will be checked on plagiarism.
  • In agreement with the second supervisor, the thesis supervisor will determine the final grade and fill in the Thesis Evaluation Form, which is then presented to you.
  • The supervisor grades the thesis within 10 working days from receiving the material, and makes sure the results are processed administratively. Deadline to hand in final versions of the thesis to the supervisor and co-reader is June 30th . Deadline for supervisor to hand in the thesis grade is July 14th .
  • In case of special personal circumstances, the Board of Examiners may grant a postponement of the deadline, following consultation with the MSc coordinator.
  • When you have stopped working on your thesis during semester 2 for other reasons than special personal circumstances, or do not hand in your thesis on time, or when you receive an insufficient grade, you will have to start again in the next academic year (at the kick-off event in November), with a new thesis subject and new supervisor, unless the requirements mentioned under 10 apply.
  • You can resubmit your master thesis only once .
  • The deadline to hand in your revised thesis is August 9th, after which the grade will be handed in by the supervisor at the latest by August 18th .
  • If your unrounded final grade is less than 4.0, no retake is possible. You will have to subscribe again, and start with a new topic and supervisor in November 2023 . Thus, you will then develop a new thesis in period 3 and 4 of the academic year 2023/24 .
  • You have put in enough effort . The thesis evaluation form, including the written feedback by your supervisor, serves as the basis for this and your thesis grade is at least 4.
  • The request needs to be made ultimately on September 15 (or when this is a Saturday or Sunday, the Friday before September 15 ). The study advisor will contact the Board of Examiners (BoE). The BoE takes the final decision.
  • In addition to the cum laude classification in art. 6.2 of the Education and Examination Regulations: if you do an external research in combination with your thesis and this prevents you to graduate in one year, and as a consequence you do not qualify for a cum laude graduation, the Board of Examiners may apply a special (leniency) regulation.

Publish your thesis

It is not mandatory, but we recommend you submit your thesis to the Students Theses Archive .

Thesis award

U.S.E. Master’s Thesis Award

Each year, Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.) chooses the top Master's theses from each of the 1-year MSc programmes. These theses are recognised with the  U.S.E. Master's Thesis Award . The winning theses need to be written and completed in semester 2 and are chosen for their relevance, academic merit, and particularly for their integration of a ‘real world perspective’ into an economics issue. Furthermore, the submitted thesis must have received a mark of at least an 8.5. Out of these ‘best-in-programme’ theses, the one thesis that stands out most receives additional accolades. The authors of the winning theses are awarded with a certificate during the Master’s Graduation ceremony.

UU Best Master’s Thesis

Utrecht University awards a prize for the best Master's thesis written at the University. It is awarded every year during the opening of the new academic year. The winner will receive an award which consists of a certificate and €1,500. Nominees need to meet certain criteria. The submitted graduate thesis or research must have received a mark of at least an 8.5 for instance. U.S.E. strives to select and submit one candidate each year. More information can be found on the university website .

Research Data Management

When you write a thesis, you are dealing with Research Data Management: processing data and possibly also personal data, for example when you conduct interviews. In the latter case, you are then dealing with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). You also need to secure your data properly at all times. It is therefore important that you know what you have to comply with in terms of legislation and university frameworks. Please figure this out before you start writing your thesis. Your thesis supervisor can help you with this, ask for the guidelines. More information can be found on the following websites:

MSc in Business, Language and Culture - Business and Development Studies

About msc blc.

MSc in Business, Language and Culture consist of 2 concentrations:

  • Business and Development Studies
  • Diversity and Change Management

MSc BLC gives you a scientifically based set of interdisciplinary, analytical, and communicative skills and qualify you for a career in globally oriented companies, institutions and organizations, private and public.

Interdisciplinary approach In MSc BLC, you will learn to investigate the theory and practice of international business and management from an interdisciplinary vantage point at the intersection of the social and human sciences, bringing together insights and methods from several academic fields:

  • international business administration and economics
  • social, political and culture studies
  • language and area studies

This interdisciplinary approach allows for a broad perspective on business, taking into account how regionally embedded values, norms, practices and interests impact the ways in which organisations operate in and across multiple contexts in the global economy.

The interdisciplinary approach is increasingly relevant to understand business at the intersection of global and local forces in particular regional contexts. Such an understanding helps not only to overcome obstacles related to cultural, social, political and economic differences between regions, but also to further one’s capacity to see and use contextual differences as potential resources when doing business.

More and more European firms are extending their activities to emerging markets and developing countries, through trade, through direct investments, or through networks. The BADS programme focuses on firm strategy, organisation and management in such countries.

Emerging markets and developing countries Emerging markets and developing countries are characterised by huge development challenges, but also by rapid economic growth as well as profound industrial and institutional transformation. Operating in such contexts raise particular challenges and opportunities for firms and organisations. BADS seeks to understand these challenges and opportunities.

During your studies you will learn to understand the complex relationship between the business strategies of firms and the development strategies of governments. This will allow you to assess the role that companies and organisations play in economic development processes, and analyse the particular conditions of formulating, implementing and managing strategy in developing countries and emerging markets.

On this background you are able to plan, design, organise and manage investment projects and development interventions in developing countries and emerging markets.

Development and challenges You will also learn about market and private sector driven development, including aid interventions in support of local business development and poverty relief. And throughout the programme you will learn to consider the strategic and cross-cultural challenges when working in developing and emerging markets, as well as the ethical challenges and dilemmas you might meet in relation to such contexts.

The faculty teaching in BADS has long standing experience working with and in developing countries and is organised in the research centre  Centre for Business and Development Studies .

Language and culture You will explore and gain general knowledge within area studies while speaking your second foreign language (French, German or Spanish). You will learn about political, cultural and social issues in areas where your second language is spoken, as well as gaining knowledge on organisations, management and leadership practices in these regional contexts. This will prepare you to work in an international setting while taking different cultural and international values and practices into account.

Customise your programme

During the programme, you have various opportunities to create your own academic profile.

Electives On the 3rd semester, you can choose to study courses of your specific interest. CBS offers a large number of electives within a wide range of topics. You can also choose to take electives at other Danish universities. The electives you choose have to be relevant for your programme. A number of electives are specifically designed to complement the core courses of BADS. Among those are:  Poverty, Sustainability and the Private Sector (CCBLV1601U) (autumn),  Marketing in Emerging Markets: Seizing the market opportunities in the world’s main growth economies (CCBLV1703U) (autumn),  Field study: Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development in Uganda (CCDEV1135U) (spring)

See the current selection of CBS electives on Single courses and electives - Master

Minor On the 3rd semester, you can also choose to study a so-called minor. A minor is a package of electives within a specific academic area. Typically, it consists of 3 courses. By taking a minor, you strengthen your competences within a specific area of interest, and you can use it to qualify for specific jobs or industries.

See the current selection of CBS minors on Minors - Master

Exchange Many students choose to go on exchange on their 3rd semester; usually at one of CBS’ more than 300 partner universities. When you go on exchange through CBS, you do not have to pay for the teaching at the foreign university (with a few exceptions), and you can bring your SU (student grant).

Find a list of all CBS partner universities here

Academic internship In BADS, you can choose to replace some or all of your electives with a so-called academic internship. The academic internship consists of an internship period at a company, which is then completed with a project report. You can do the internship at a company in Denmark or abroad. The internship must have an international or intercultural scope, and the project report and work assignments have to be relevant to your study programme. When doing an internship you get the opportunity to relate theory to practice and reflect on the academic training you receive at CBS in a practical setting.

CEMS - Master in International Management programme On BADS, you can apply for the CEMS - Master in International Management programme. CEMS MIM is a double degree programme, which gives you the opportunity to add a second degree in international management to you CBS degree. This means that you will get both the MSc degree and the CEMS in International Management degree.

CEMS is a 1-year programme, which you study in combination with your CBS degree in your 3rd and 4th semester. Part of it  takes place at one of the other CEMS universities abroad.

Learn more about CEMS / Master in International Management

Master's thesis Your 2nd year is completed with a master's thesis. You choose the topic you want to write about, which allows you to focus on a specific topic of your interest. Typically, you write your master's thesis with a fellow student.

What to consider

Interest in developing countries and emerging markets Many students have an interest in Africa, Asia and Latin America, since developing countries and emerging markets are found in these regions. In general, the students are interested in the intersection between business and development, and many students value the focus on ethical and corporate social responsibility aspects of business activity in emerging markets and developing countries as well as language and culture.

Large curriculum The courses involve significant readings in general approximately 800-1200 pages of course curricula per course. This is a challenge to some students but can be overcome if you plan your studies carefully.

2nd foreign language For some students the 2nd foreign language is a challenge. You will have courses in area studies taught in your 2nd foreign language. These courses deal with business, cultures and societies in regions in which the language is spoken. This means that you will read and discuss fairly complex academic texts in your 2nd foreign language.

Quarter and semester structure Some of the courses are taught on a quarter basis. That means that you complete your courses within two month and the studies of these subjects are highly concentrated.

Studying in English If you do not have a bachelor’s degree taught in English, we recommend that you read more about what to consider before applying for an English taught programme.

Study environment

Students from many countries BADS is one of the most international master programmes at CBS. Students come from many different countries and many students have different academic bachelor backgrounds. Around 40-50% of the students are from other countries around the world.

The environment is very multicultural, given the many different nationalities of students studying this concentration. Academically, there is a supportive environment among the students, and the intercultural environment offers great exposure to other ways of doing things, especially during group work.

While studying

During the first year , the focus is on developing the knowledge about strategy, entrepreneurship, networking, and international growth in established and new businesses. You will work strategically with businesses which requires you to act based on your assembled knowledge and take part in developing a business idea, for example by developing a business plan for a start-up, or a new venture within an established organization. You have, for example, the possibility to broaden the knowledge on innovation or do an internship through your choice of elective courses.

During the second year , you will learn about the latest trends and global challenges and the effects of those on businesses and societies at large. In relation to this, front-line research in business administration, including entrepreneurship- and innovation research, is discussed. Our method course prepares you for writing business development-thesis in the 4th semester but the third semester is also good for studying abroad. Writing the thesis will, amongst other things, develop your writing and analysis and research skills.

Co-operation with the business community

Besides several guest lectures and experts participating in business panels, firms participate to a large extent during the fourth module on the first semester. In this module you work with “live-cases” – real business development challenges that participating firms have. You will carry out a longer project and present the solution via a professional presentation. Firms also participate in several other courses provided during semester 2 and 3. In Innovation Management a "hackathon" is conducted with participating firms and in New Venture Creation firms and organizations also partake. They present the challenges they currently face and together with students’ groups work on potential solutions.

About our research

At the entrepreneurship section we do research on entrepreneurship and innovation with various focuses such as cooperation and competition, environmental sustainability, social innovation and ecopreneurship, and configuration of (support) systems for new venture creation and corporate innovation. With this research we contribute to contemporary questions of how entrepreneurs and firms work with each other and actors from other sectors to create innovation, and how these efforts are increasingly related to sustainability.”

In our programmes and courses we focus on competencies that are needed for your future professional life.

Applies to all Master's Programmes in Business Administration

You have the opportunity to do an internship for ten weeks in Sweden or abroad. This possibility is only available at a few business schools in the country. The internship gives you a good opportunity to put theoretical knowledge and experience into practice and show off your skills to potential employers. You will arrange your internship yourself in a company you find interesting. This way you are able to find an internship position that meets your expectations and provides more opportunities for you to use the internship as an entry to the labour market.

Studies abroad

Studying abroad is not only fun and challenging for you as a student but also a welcomed experience with future employers. Internationalization is an important area for us and we are working continuously to offer you as a student many opportunities for an adventure in Europe or further away on another continent. In our programmes you therefore have the opportunity for studies abroad for a semester or two.

We have about 60 partner universities, mainly in Europe, but also in Brazil, India, Mexico, South Africa, Russia, and China - all of them selected especially for our students. Students who would like to study farther away can avail themselves of Umeå University's university-wide agreements in North America, Oceania, and Asia.

Our work on sustainability takes as a starting point the 17 sustainable development goals and Agenda 2030.

We are certified by the environmental management system ISO 14001 and we are members of the international networks GBSN, PRME and SDSN.

Corporate connections

The business school collaborates in many different ways with companies and organizations. For example internships, guest lectures, company visits, guest lectures, essay assignments and cases from companies.

As a student you might perhaps do an internship with one of our corporate partners. Professionals outside the university are invited as guest lecturers and teachers. Our researchers will in turn contribute with new knowledge to society. A group of advisors consisting of corporate and community representatives are also linked to the business school and they contribute with their knowledge and experience.

While Sandel argues that pursuing perfection through genetic engineering would decrease our sense of humility, he claims that the sense of solidarity we would lose is also important.

This thesis summarizes several points in Sandel’s argument, but it does not make a claim about how we should understand his argument. A reader who read Sandel’s argument would not also need to read an essay based on this descriptive thesis.

Broad thesis (arguable, but difficult to support with evidence)

Michael Sandel’s arguments about genetic engineering do not take into consideration all the relevant issues.

This is an arguable claim because it would be possible to argue against it by saying that Michael Sandel’s arguments do take all of the relevant issues into consideration. But the claim is too broad. Because the thesis does not specify which “issues” it is focused on—or why it matters if they are considered—readers won’t know what the rest of the essay will argue, and the writer won’t know what to focus on. If there is a particular issue that Sandel does not address, then a more specific version of the thesis would include that issue—hand an explanation of why it is important.

Arguable thesis with analytical claim

While Sandel argues persuasively that our instinct to “remake” (54) ourselves into something ever more perfect is a problem, his belief that we can always draw a line between what is medically necessary and what makes us simply “better than well” (51) is less convincing.

This is an arguable analytical claim. To argue for this claim, the essay writer will need to show how evidence from the article itself points to this interpretation. It’s also a reasonable scope for a thesis because it can be supported with evidence available in the text and is neither too broad nor too narrow.

Arguable thesis with normative claim

Given Sandel’s argument against genetic enhancement, we should not allow parents to decide on using Human Growth Hormone for their children.

This thesis tells us what we should do about a particular issue discussed in Sandel’s article, but it does not tell us how we should understand Sandel’s argument.

Questions to ask about your thesis

  • Is the thesis truly arguable? Does it speak to a genuine dilemma in the source, or would most readers automatically agree with it?
  • Is the thesis too obvious? Again, would most or all readers agree with it without needing to see your argument?
  • Is the thesis complex enough to require a whole essay's worth of argument?
  • Is the thesis supportable with evidence from the text rather than with generalizations or outside research?
  • Would anyone want to read a paper in which this thesis was developed? That is, can you explain what this paper is adding to our understanding of a problem, question, or topic?

Intercultural exchanges with international students will enhance your personal development while strengthening team competence, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, negotiation skills, social skills and much more.
  • Close supervision during the course:  From the very first semester on, you will be working on a business plan with a small group in order to become familiar with practical business development issues. The teamwork will be individually supervised by the relevant lecturers, who will help develop and apply situational solution models in the event of emotionally charged situations or conflicts.
  • Flexible study design and individual specialization:  By linking predefined compulsory modules with freely selectable elective modules, you have the opportunity to complete a very broad business education with a focus on individually preferred study content. The broad range of electives allows you to specialize in certain areas of study (e.g. marketing or finance). This allows for individual tailoring of the study program according to personal preferences and interests, as well as supporting the creation of a specialized profile design.

Internationality and interdisciplinarity:  The program, which is taught exclusively in English, is characterized by its international orientation. The third semester can also be used as a mobility window in which you can complete a semester at one of the approx. 75 foreign universities partnering with the Faculty of Business & Economics.

Gsas students shine in 2024 three minute thesis competition.

Victoria Khaghani, Manning Zhang, Pranav Ojha, and William Dahl stand onstage holding their Three Minute Thesis prize certificates.

April 30, 2024

Ayla Cordell | Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

The 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) at Brandeis Graduate School of Arts & Sciences was not Will Dahl’s first rodeo. “It took me two tries,” the Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student said. “On my first attempt last year, I missed a line and stood silent for what felt like ages. To be honest, I was terrified!” This year, Will took home the first place prize for the Sciences of $1,000 and the overall win. He credits his success to careful planning, refinement, and lots of practice. He focused on formatting his talk as a story that would resonate with a wide audience: “Every sentence must be calibrated to communicate, and there is no room for asides. The talk converges from broader impacts to the actual thesis.”

Explaining your research in just three minutes is a tall order, but on April 5, the third annual 3MT Competition, founded by the University of Queensland , saw ten GSAS students meet that very task. Marika McCann, Associate Director of Professional Development at GSAS and member of the 3MT team, alongside Associate Professor of Anthropology and Faculty Director of Professional Development Jon Anjaria; Anahita Zare of MRSEC ; and Becky Prigge, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at GSAS, said this about the 2024 competitors: “Our team was very impressed with how hard our students worked and the overall enthusiasm they brought to their talks. The audience learned so much from our students in this short time, including the possibility of early detection of Parkinson’s Disease, the importance of examining circadian rhythms, patterns in Honduran ceramics, and Tamil transfeminine performance in post-war Sri Lanka.”

Under the bright white stage lights and looking out upon an audience of friends, family, members of the Brandeis community, and a panel of five judges, finalists took to the Spingold Theatre stage. While it was certainly nerve-wracking, contestants noted the benefits of presenting in this format.

Manning Zhang, who won first place in the Humanities/Creative Arts/Social Sciences category, said the best moment of the competition was standing on the stage for the final round with rushing adrenaline. Acknowledging that few friends and family know about what she researches in Sociology and Health Policy, she began sharing more with them to understand how different people would react to her research. While this helped her prepare for the competition, it ended up holding deeper meaning for Zhang: “It took me a really long time to pursue my research and say, ‘This is meaningful.’ Getting feedback from people and hearing that they understand what I’m doing is really important to me.”

Victoria Khaghani, a Master’s student in Anthropology who was Runner Up in the Humanities/Creative Arts/Social Sciences category, echoed this sentiment. “You have to push yourself pretty hard to be able to condense your research down. But being able to then present my research to my family and have them say, ‘We finally understand what you’re doing,’ where they can understand the importance of it…that was huge.”

While contestants hoped to teach their audience something about their research, some finished the competition having learned new things about themselves. “I really like speaking in front of people,” Pranav Ojha, a Molecular and Cell Biology PhD student, discovered. “Figuring out what words to say, how to communicate them to inspire care - I enjoyed that process, and I’m coming out of it with different career ideas.” His passion for public speaking was evident - Ojha finished the competition with a total $1,250, after winning both Runner Up in the Sciences and the People’s Choice Award, which is determined through audience vote.

The final round may have showcased three minutes of individual presentation, but 3MT thrives as a collective and collaborative effort. “This is one of the only opportunities GSAS students at Brandeis have to share their research with the overall Brandeis community, outside of their departments,” McCann noted. Zhang (Sociology and Health Policy) even reached out to 2022 winner Emiliano Gutierrez-Popoca (PhD English ‘23), whose talk on Master-Servant Relations in Early Modern Drama led him to the National 3MT competition. Though they come from different disciplines, 3MT provided a platform for shared experience, and Popoca helped Zhang revise her draft for the final round. “I’ve gained a lot of rapport with people I didn’t think I could have rapport with…networking is very precious,” Zhang said. The 3MT community at Brandeis continues to strengthen and grow, and we cannot wait for next year!

Rules regarding the Master’s thesis

On this page you can find most of the rules regarding the Master’s thesis.

You can find a course description for the Master's Thesis in the course catalogue.

*These deadlines only apply if you do not submit your thesis within the submission deadline for your first or second examination attempt respectively. Other rules/deadlines apply if you do not pass your first or second examination attempt (please refer to the section “If you do not pass...” below”).

** These dates apply to students starting their programme in the winter and to students who have been granted dispensation to write their Master's thesis in the autumn semester.

If the date of the submission deadline for the Master's thesis falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, the deadline for submission of the Master's thesis will be the next working day immediately following this date.

Registration of supervisor, (tentative) title and thesis statement

To start the preparation of the thesis you must decide on a topic and also formulate a tentative thesis statement.

Before the deadlines (listed above)  you must register your preferred academic supervisor, the (tentative) thesis title and your thesis statement by completing the Registration webform

If you are writing a theoretical thesis please state it under the company information in the registration form.

The master’s thesis can be written by one or two students. If you are two authors you must register by completing the same webform together (e.g. one webform for each 'group').

The reasons why you should consider your “Thesis statement including theory and data” as early as possible are that these considerations will influence your choice of supervisor and allow potential supervisors to determine whether they would be the right supervisor for your project. In this way, your own clarification of your research area makes it easier for you to ask for the right supervisor. In addition, the coordinators use your research area and your suggested title to determine whether your topic falls within the academic scope of your degree programme.

In principle, what your state on your registration form is your best suggestion for a thesis statement at the given time in the process. Naturally, this means that it is not binding.

Please note that you must only use this web form for registration of your first examination attempt .

The assigned academic supervisor must approve the thesis title and thesis statement.

Registration in the Student Self-Service (STADS)

If you are a Master’s degree student following the prescribed study programme, you will automatically be registered for your Master’s thesis in the Self-service system (STADS) at the outset of the fourth semester of your degree programme with a submission deadline on 1 June. However, you are responsible for checking, that your registration is correct.

The registration takes place at this point in time, as this gives you the possibility to carry through three exam attempts in your master’s thesis within your maximum duration of studies.

If you do not follow the scheduled programme and are registered for writing the Master’s thesis in the autumn semester, you have a deadline for finding and registering an academic supervisor and (tentative) thesis title on 1 June and must submit the thesis on 1 January.

If your maximum duration of studies is extended or shortened, your (automatic) registration will depend on your maximum duration of studies.

The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 6 weeks, counting from the submission day.

Once you are registered, you cannot cancel your registration.

List of BTECH supervisors

You can only choose a supervisor from BTECH. Please note that you ask for a preferred supervisor. After the deadline a supervisor will be assigned to you by the programme coordinator.

Find the list of supervisors here

Approval of preliminary title and thesis statement

Your supervisor must formally approve of your preliminary title and thesis statement. This means that immediately before you begin writing your Master’s thesis, you will be asked to upload your preliminary title and thesis statement to WISEflow, where it will await formal approval from your supervisor. You can find the relevant deadline in the table under 'Deadlines'.

It is perfectly acceptable for the preliminary title and thesis statement to be identical to the description you submitted via the online form in connection with your request for / choice of supervisor, and you may change your title and thesis statement in collaboration with your supervisor on an ongoing basis while writing your Master’s thesis.

Guidelines for written assignments

The guidelines for written assignments include: referencing tools, how to refer to your sources and make a reference list, and how to avoid plagiarism.

Processing personal data

If you gain access to or collect personal data to be used in your assignment, you are responsible for taking care of that data.

Learn about the the rules for collecting and processing personal data (GDPR).

Register the companies/organisations you collaborate with

In order to improve your career prospects, we need to collect information on the companies/organisations that you may collaborate with.

Once you have registered for your Master’s thesis, you will receive a form in your AU mailbox. The form contains a few questions regarding your collaboration with the company/organisation.

You must complete the form regardless of whether you are collaborating with a company/organisation or not.

If you need help when completing the form, you can read more on AU's page on registration of collaborations, where you can also send your questions via the contact form.

Handing in your thesis

Your Master’s thesis must be uploaded in WiseFlow. You are not allowed to hand in a paper copy of the thesis, as it is the uploaded version that is legally binding. When you have handed in the thesis in WiseFlow it will automatically be send to supervisor and external examiner.

WISEflow You will receive an e-mail from WISEflow when it is possible to upload your Master's thesis. Deadline for handing in the thesis in WISEflow is 1 June at 12:00. This means that you should begin uploading well in advance before deadline, since the flow closes exactly at 12:00. Uploading a thesis can take up to 30 minutes.

If you experience problems with uploading your thesis, please contact the  technical and/or administrative support .

Once you have uploaded your thesis it is not possible to withdraw it. Therefore, you must make absolutely sure that you upload the correct version.

The flow is set up as a “group-flow”. If the Master's thesis is written by one person you must choose "Create one-person group" in WISEflow.  If you have not previously tried to upload an assignment in WISEflow as a group, please read and follow the  instructions on how to submit as a group  i the FAQ.

The thesis including appendixes must be saved as one PDF-file and uploaded under “Paper”.  Read more on how to convert your paper to PDF .

Under the category “Extra material” you can upload material like movies, sound, programs (Excel, SAS mv.). The extra material does not have to be a pdf-file and you can hand in more than one file up to a maximum size of 5 GB.

Confidential theses You are not required to attach your confidentiality agreement when you upload and submit your Master's thesis. When you upload your Master's thesis in WISEflow, you must indicate (in the 'Cover') whether the thesis contains confidential material.

Handing in from 15 May - 31 May

Theses handed in from 15 May -31 May will not be sent to evaluation before the deadline 1 June.

Especially for early submission during the summer period - the second examination attempt:

  • If you wish to submit your paper in June or July, you must send an email to [email protected] .

As a rule, there is no assessment of theses, papers and exams in July. Individual deadlines for evaluation of early submission must therefore be planned in advance. The assessment deadline will be four weeks + the month of July.

Oral defense

The department will send you information regarding the oral defence of the thesis either via mail or in Wiseflow. The deadline for assessment/the oral defense is 6 weeks, counting from the submission day.

No access to OneDrive after graduation Once your last grade is registered you will no longer have access to OneDrive. This means that you have to download and transfer your files from OneDrive before finishing your programme. It is not possible to restore access to OneDrive once you have finished your programme at Aarhus University.

Submitting your thesis before the submission deadline

If you would like to submit your Master's thesis prior to the deadline, you must be aware of the following:

  • If you submit more than 14 days before the fixed submission deadline, your Master's thesis will be sent for assessment as quickly as possible, and the assessment deadline will be up to six weeks from the date of submission. At the same time, you must send an email to [email protected] regarding the early submission of the thesis.
  • If you submit 14 days or less before your fixed submission deadline, your assessor will not be informed of your submission until the official submission deadline, after which the four week assessment deadline is set in motion. However, your assessor can access your Master's thesis from the day you submit and can send in the assessment as soon as the thesis is assessed.

Early submission during the summer period for the second examination attempt If you wish to submit your thesis in June or July, you must notify [email protected]

July is assessment-free, and individual evaluation deadlines must therefore be set for early submissions. As a rule, the assessment deadline will be four weeks + the month of July.

Please note, this is only possible for students who have not submitted by 1 June. If you do not pass the Master's thesis, you must familiarise yourself with the section below: " If you do not pass your Master's thesis ".

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis on time

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis within the prescribed submission deadline, it means you will have spent an examination attempt.

You must subsequently prepare a revised thesis statement within the same subject area and with the same supervisor.

Please contact your supervisor no later than five days after you have received the not passing grade (not including the month of July). Together, you must prepare and agree on a revised thesis statement. You must upload the revised thesis statement to WISEflow, where it will await formal approval from your supervisor. (Please note that the July month is free of assessment).

It is your responsibility to contact your supervisor to initiate this process.

The new submission deadline for handing in your Master's thesis will be 3 months + 14 days from your original submission deadline. The new submission deadline will automatically come into effect the day after your orginal deadline. If you fail to submit your Master's thesis by the new deadline, it means you will have spent yet another examination attempt.

If you fail to submit your Master's thesis within the submission deadline for your second examination attempt, the same procedure will apply.

Registration for the second and third examination attempt will happen automatically.

If you do not pass your Master's thesis

To pass your Master's thesis, you have to achieve the grade 02 or higher. If your Master's thesis is not awarded the grade 02 or higher, you will have spent an examination attempt.

The new submission deadline for handing in your Master's thesis will be 3 months + 14 days from the assessment deadline for your first examination attempt. The new submission deadline will automatically come into effect the day after the assessment date. If you fail to submit your Master's thesis by the new deadline, it means you will have spent yet another examination attempt.

The same procedure will apply if your Master's thesis is not awarded the grade 02 or higher at your second examination attempt.

Especially for students writing Master's thesis in the spring semester For students writing Master's thesis in the spring semester, the assessment deadline is 30 June.

Since the month of July does not count in the assessment period, the deadline for submission is three months + 14 days from 1st August and your 2nd examination attempt can therefore start at the earliest on 15 August. This notwithstanding that you will receive a non-pass assessment earlier than the 30 June.

Clemson University will offer an online M.S. in Computer Science for a total of $20,280 intuition.

Clemson University will partner with Coursera to offer a fully online Master of Science in Computer Science degree (MSCS). The announcement was made in a blog release today by Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer at Coursera , the online learning platform and a pioneer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS),

The program, which will have an artificial intelligence focus, is designed to be both affordable and uniquely accessible.

Instead of having to complete a a formal application, any student 1) who holds a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college and 2) earns a B average in two introductory Clemson courses through Coursera will be automatically accepted. They will have 20% of the degree already completed.

Tuition for the complete program is being set at $20,280, 35% less than the comparable hybrid program.

“This Master of Science in Computer Science program is timely, industry-relevant and thoughtfully designed to be approachable to learners from many backgrounds, for example those looking for opportunities for mid-career advancement,” said Brian Dean, Professor and C. Tycho Howle Director of the Clemson School of Computing, in the release.

“The modern and cutting-edge curriculum ensures that learners can succeed, whether they hold a formal computer science background or whether their computing background comes from prior real-world experience. We are excited to be able to partner with Coursera to offer this program at Clemson University,” Dean added.

Enrollment for the new program is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2024, with the first courses beginning in August 2024.

Clemson anticipates that most students will be able to complete the program in 20-36 months, preparing them for careers such as software development, information security analysis, and computer research. Students will be able to watch lecture videos at any time while engaging with peers and tenure-track Clemson faculty in live course sessions and office hours.

The 10-course MSCS program will feature:

  • An AI-first curriculum. Five of the ten courses will be focused on AI.
  • An emphasis on ethics. To promote ethical use of AI, students will be taught to examine the implications of each AI system before exploring it further.
  • A combination of theory with real-world skills. Students will first learn core software engineering principles before tackling more advanced topics, including deep learning, data science, and data mining.
  • A hands-on approach to learning. Students will be expected to complete complex projects in real-world computing environments, enabling them to build a substantial portfolio demonstrating they know how to apply their knowledge.

“We’re honored to partner with Clemson on this affordable, accessible, and incredibly relevant degree,” said Coursera’s Stein. “Together, we’ll educate future technical leaders, who will thoughtfully use AI to solve society’s most pressing challenges and create a positive impact.”

Clemson’s use of a performance-based admission process is an innovation that bears watching. While the use of standardized admissions tests continues to be hotly debated in higher education circles, actual course performance could prove a fairer and easier alternative for making admission decisions, particularly for certain graduate programs.
