Ok so third update. So here it is, the daughter is a druggie and so is the boyfriend, she decided to have her boyfriend steal my tools out of my truck while I was gone at a friend's. So when I got back late that night or rather early the next morning the 5th I noticed things was different such as they disconnected the electrical from my motorhome took my extension cords and also my little generator. So I went to the truck to get it to hook up to my utility trailer to start moving some of my stuff when I realized they had gotten into it and took all my tools in it. See they wanted me gone because no more work had gotten done on the house but that wasn't my fault. Because they wasn't getting me any materials to do any work and it was this way from day one. The only reason any work did get done is because I went and get some that I found on Facebook marketplace for free. Plus some other stuff I bought. Which isn't my responsibility. But that obviously isn't how they saw it I guess. So apparently she went and filed for a restraining order to get me off the property, but for different reasons. It was so they could steal more of my tools and stuff from my motorhome. They had gotten my third set of keys to all my vehicles. The stole so much from me and my wife and dog. They stole our TV just ripped it off the wall bracket arm, my PS4 and Nintendo switch out toilet paper, my wife's sex toys yes that's right. A 24pack of Dr pepper and Pepsi our tablets even some that where broken including old phones and my new ond I had just paid the bill the day before and got home Internet which they stole both of them to including my portable wifi hotspot. Our little safe which had like $600 in there we had been saving up so we could get into a place to live. Our dogs food. Expensive stuff to. Jewelry a bunch of my knives which some where collectibles. All of food in the fridge and freezer. Just so much stuff. Close to $3500 if not more. I still need to get our other cord explorer off the property. These people are just well I'm not even going to say. But I'm sure you all have things you would call them which would be ones I probably would to. I did so much for them and got treated like this. Unbelievable. So now I can't even do any of my handyman work because they took all my tools even my mechanic tools. And the cops won't do anything about it because can't prove they are the ones who took the stuff. Like really seriously. I told them they broke into my truck before I got home and found out the had my third set of keys to all my vehicles except for one my Lincoln. And that they would have free rain once we left because the cops had served me with the temp restraining order. I just and trying to keep my head up and move forward but it's not easy now especially since I lost all my tools that's how I made money. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you all. Had no phone. Thanks again to all of you that did help and offered help and everything else I appreciate all of my neighbors as always thank you very much was your local Handyman jack of all trades. Now I don't even know. Sincerely your neighbor Ed Benson 2nd update. Mr Green is in the hospital because of gallbladder he has to have surgery to have it removed. Now his daughter is trying to kick us off the property. And we have no place to go. I don't get it . This sucks. Al I want to do and have been is to help trying to get this place finished for him. I can only do so much. I'm only one person. Why is it that I always seem to get the short end of the stick. I've done so much for him and his daughter. I don't think it's him though I think it's just her. Still I don't understand why. I have no clue what we are going to do. I guess it truly doesn't ever pay to be the nice guy and help someone out as much as I always do. So the worst part is Mr. Green still won't be getting his house done by any body. I have been the only one doing anything to help I've paid for materials and went and got them never been repayed back either. I just spent $177 to take my trailer to the dump 2,000lbs worth and spent $50 for kerosene for Mr. Green so he would have some heat just before he went to the hospital. No one else does anything for him definitely not his daughter. Pretty sad. UPDATE!! MR. GREEN IS A GREAT GUY! Today some lowlife druggie who Mr. Green has been trying to help who he was selling this 93 Ford Mustang to has stolen it today while Mr. Green is in the hospital. Mr. Green doesn't know about this yet either. This so really REALLY REALLY PISSES ME OFF TO KNOW END!!! But I haHIS HOME AGAIN NOW PLEASE I BEG HOU PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS! ILL KEEP LIVING IN MY MOTOR HOME ON THE STREETS I DONT CARE JUST PLEASE HELP ME WITH Mr. Greens place and make it a Home please I just know he would do so much better and wouldn't be in such depression as he is which is making his health worse. Please please PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS PLEASE! THANK YOU YOUR LOCAL HANDYMAN JACK A OF ALL TRADES. AS ALWAYS PLEASE STAY SAFE AND STAY HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. Edward Albert Benson III Asking for help with Dry firewood for an elderly man who has had a string of bad luck. 2 years ago the top half of a very big tree fell on his house then a year ago he lost his wife to colon cancer. Habitat for humanity came and fixed his roof once he got a loan and a few other things some of which didn't need to be done or was even a necessity. What was other then the roof , was the was needing to be sheetrocked as well as the ceilings, and the electrical brought from the pole at the street to the riser on the side of the house which then goes to the power meter then I to the circuit breaker panel. None of which was done. Once all the money from the loan was gone/spent they left. Leaving this gentleman with out some walls and ceilings, without Sheetrock the bathroom with partial plumbing/ no shower-tub in closer. No electricity, no heat other then by fireplace no way to cook. The worst of it is he now can't afford to buy materials for all that needs to be done do to having to pay off the loan and the water cause he still has water now thanks to me, and some electricity but only by extension cord from the temporary pole so a couple of lights and the fridge and a microwave, that's it. I've been doing what I can to help by getting sheetrock when I see it on Facebook or offer up or Craigslist for free still need more of the sheet rock, a circuit breaker panel a riser and a meter for the electrical, a shower and tub inclosure, and right now really needs some dry firewood to stay warm. Please if you have any or know where some is please let me know either on here or at ,253-296-0390. Thanks very much your local Handyman a Jack of all trades. Willow Hill Apartments 🤦🏽‍♀️ woke up at 3am to the sound of water and came to see these lovely waterfalls from the ceiling. Called the emergency maintenance number and talked to the property manager only for her to tell me it was caused by the upstairs neighbor washing machine and we just have to clean it up because they can’t do anything. They can come and do a moisture probe (which i highly doubt because we’ve been waiting for them to come and do one for a long time now from a previous water leak from upstairs but no one ever came) and that’s about it. We’ve only been here since the end of november and have encountered so many issues. If anyone has any advice on where to go from here please share. Thank you. See more …

Channel 11 comes in clear on my antenna reception here in Everett! But I LOVE channel 11 cause they play TWO episodes of The Closer on Sunday night. Re-runs forever: I LOVE The Closer. I often watch comedy (The Middle, Whose Line, King of Queens, etc) on Channel 11, court shows, and Family Feud, cause nothing else is on elsewhere. Also, Channel 11 seem to play less, and less boring, commercials than the 'main' stations, which makes whatever show is on a lot more worth watching.

On The Air In The Air

Aerial journalism is so important to TV news, the helicopters are promoted like personalities. When a whale is hunted, the waters rise or a bus plunges off a bridge, there's no better way to see what happened.

There is competitive pressure in that airspace. When a big story breaks, the day can be long.

With no regulations limiting their flying time, the pilots decide when enough is enough. On May 28, after 7 1/2 hours in the air covering a shooting rampage in Shoreline, KOMO-TV pilot Roger Fox declined to fly any longer and had words with a supervisor.

Fox no longer works at KOMO, and the circumstances of his departure are matters of debate.

But the incident brought a number of questions to the forefront: Who are these flyboys, and what guides their conduct in the air? Seattle Times aerospace reporter Chuck Taylor spent a day in the skies with KIRO-TV's Chopper 7 crew to learn what they do, and what it takes to bring home those spectacular pictures. -------------------------------

It's been an unusually slow news day.

Clark Stahl and Bill Heinlein are sprawled on plush chairs in the sunny lobby of Classic Helicopter Corp. at Boeing Field. The five o'clock news on KIRO-TV is almost over, and the Chopper 7 crew hasn't had to move.

Heinlein has cracked a paperback. Stahl is reading a magazine.

Then the cell phone pierces the jet noise from outside. It's the assignment desk. Some sort of police tactical response is under way in West Seattle. Don't have an address yet.

Stahl, the reporter-pilot who narrates nearly all of KIRO's aerial journalism, and Heinlein, the photographer who operates the gyro-mounted camera that hangs from Chopper 7's Plexiglas nose, walk swiftly out to the ramp. It's 5:53 p.m.

They fire up their 1980 Bell Jet Ranger III and call Boeing Tower for takeoff clearance.

"Chopper 7, roger, cleared for takeoff," the tower controller says. "Traffic (to watch for) is a TV helicopter in orbit over Duwamish Head."

Curses! KING-TV's SkyKing, piloted by Tom Murphy, already is circling the scene and probably is feeding pictures to viewers.

Chopper 7 floats across the Boeing Field grass and climbs into the urban sky in pursuit. It's probably too late for the five o'clock newscast, so whatever they get will be for 6:30.

At least Air 4, KOMO-TV's helicopter, is out of action - in the shop for maintenance and, for now, without a full-time pilot after the recent departure of Roger Fox. This particular aerial battle will be a duel between Stahl and Murphy.

But battle is too strong a word. Typically, they coordinate by radio their circuit of a scene. First guy there gets choice of altitude and orbit. The next flies 200 feet higher and at the opposite side of the circle. And so on, if other media aircraft converge.

Seattle's TV chopper pilots and radio traffic spotters also share information - up to a point. Stahl radios SkyKing, inquiring about the location of the West Seattle standoff. Murphy says it's near the big water tower.

Chopper 7 heads northwest from Boeing Field. The assignment desk has some details. A man has fired a gun and is holding himself hostage in a garage. It's a dime-a-dozen incident, but police have sealed the neighborhood and the potential is there for it to become something bigger.

Stahl is in the right seat, hand on the joystick, feet on the pedals, two boom microphones sweeping across his cheek from substantial headphones.

Heinlein is in the back seat, with a keyboard-like console on his lap and several TV monitors in front of him. He uses a joystick to direct the camera, which has an incredibly powerful zoom lens and miraculously steady aim. The steadycam, as it is called, has a gyroscope for a tripod.

"For 15 years or better, I was shooting hand-held out the window," with a regular shoulder-mounted video camera, Heinlein says, "and I was thinking I was pretty good at keeping images steady. Until we got this thing."

Atop Stahl's cockpit panel is a miniature television monitor, where he can see what the camera sees, or what KIRO is broadcasting. There's also a small camera there, pointed at him for the shot that establishes Stahl as KIRO's guy in the sky.

"The way we work," says KIRO news director Bill Lord, "Clark is a reporter." The other two stations with choppers carry a reporter along for commentary, if need be.

A wall of noise

Chopper 7 flies over the Duwamish Waterway. In their headphones, Stahl and Heinlein are listening to a wall of noise: clipped commands on two air-traffic-control frequencies, chatter on several police scanners, occasional conversations on the two-way radio channel used by the assignment desk to talk to reporters in the field.

After hundreds of hours of doing this, the Chopper 7 crew is keen at ignoring the irrelevant radio jabber and picking up the pertinent info emerging from the din, such as a call from air-traffic controllers.

Or a fragment of something interesting announced by a police dispatcher, whose voice rises ever so slightly above the normal calm: ". . . two vehicles racing northbound through the Battery Street Tunnel at 80 to 90 mph . . ."

"Did you hear that?" Heinlein says.

"Yeah," Stahl replies.

There is hesitation while they ponder the obvious question: Could this be better than some guy holding himself hostage? They'd have a head start getting there.

Just a few months earlier, Stahl and Heinlein had captured on video a dramatic car chase through downtown Seattle, during which shots were fired before the suspect was apprehended.

"Let's check it out," Stahl says.

Chopper 7 turns northbound over Elliott Bay, away from West Seattle and SkyKing. Heinlein looks back to see if Murphy, too, heard about the cars racing up Aurora Avenue North, and whether he is headed their way.

SkyKing is staying put, hovering over Duwamish Head.

"Where you going, Clark?" Murphy asks over the radio.

Stahl reports his position vaguely: "Northbound, Queen Anne."

"You got something better?"

"Naw," Stahl says, "we're going to check out Green Lake." The cordial television air war is a safe one, thanks to this sort of banter, but sometimes it means not being entirely frank with the competition.

"That was lame," Heinlein cracks over the intercom.

"Well, it may be true," Stahl says of their pursuit for uncertain news.

Heinlein has trained the camera on Aurora Avenue, scanning the traffic stretching north from downtown. From over Queen Anne, intersections five miles away fill the screen. No sign of racing cars.

Chopper 7 breaks off the pursuit over Fremont and makes a 180-degree turn over Ballard and Interbay to return to the standoff in West Seattle. Stahl activates the helicopter's microwave beam, which will send live pictures to a receiving dish on Gold Mountain, 15 miles away in Kitsap County. From there, the video feed is relayed back to KIRO's Seattle studios.

By the time Stahl and Heinlein arrive to orbit the scene in West Seattle, it's 6:10 and SkyKing is gone. KING now is broadcasting an NBA championship game and won't be needing anything for a 6:30 newscast. The job will be easier with no one else circling.

Chasing the action

It takes a couple of minutes to figure out where the action is. Seemingly tiny, light-blue Seattle Police cars are lined up on one street. The mobile command post is parked near one intersection. Several blocks of West Seattle have been cordoned off. But where is the suspect with the gun hiding out?

Then Heinlein spots the armored personnel carrier the SWAT teams uses. With the naked eye from 1,400 feet up, it looks like a little black box. But on Heinlein's TV monitor, it fills the screen.

Their timing couldn't be better. The APC, as it's called, is on the move, and a cop in plain clothes is running up a driveway to a side garage, apparently where the guy with the gun is holed up.

Looking out the window, the garage is barely discernible from the house, and it's hard to stay focused on it as Stahl slowly flies back and forth about a mile west of the scene. But Heinlein has the steadycam aimed so that the garage fills the entire TV screen. "I can see him in the doorway," he says. The man and the cop apparently are talking.

Over the air, KIRO is broadcasting "The CBS Evening News," but producers have been recording the pictures Chopper 7 has been feeding, for use later.

"Chopper 7, Boeing Tower," the radio suddenly crackles.

"Chopper 7," Stahl replies.

"Chopper 7, Seattle Police request that you remain clear of the scene."

"Chopper 7, roger." Stahl backs off a few miles to a position off Alki Beach. Heinlein still is able to keep the garage in full view, but the angle isn't as good. Buildings in the foreground are partly blocking it.

Such requests are the bane of TV chopper pilots. Authorities on the ground say distracting noise or the fact suspects might monitor police movements are among the reasons for waving off the aerial photographers.

Stahl doesn't want to make a situation worse, but he's convinced that sometimes authorities close airspace simply to keep the media from scrutinizing their work.

In this case the request seems reasonable, and now that the desk has recorded tape of the garage up-close, it doesn't matter much.

It's 6:22 now. Stahl tunes the cockpit TV to KIRO's broadcast of the CBS news, and that audio joins the other cacophony in the headphones.

The man in question is thought to be suicidal. With tape, you have editorial control. With a live shot, you don't. "Chopper 7," the assignment editor radios, "for the 6:30, we want a wide shot - really wide, so this guy doesn't spill his brains on our television."

In reply, Stahl and Heinlein jokingly feign surprise at the policy. The danger of broadcasting a volatile situation live is probably the most talked-about issue in helicopter reporting. But the order must be given, so there's no question about who was told what. Heinlein zooms back. The shot now is so wide as to be worthless, showing practically all of West Seattle.

It's almost 6:30 and Dan Rather is introducing his last story. Stahl is briefed by the assignment desk. They agree that he'll do a brief live report, talking over the previously shot video of the armored vehicle and the garage.

In Stahl's headphones, the stream of noise continues - the police scanners, the air-traffic control exchanges, the closing theme music of "The CBS Evening News."

All this time he has been slowly flying back and forth, a light touch on the stick, never deviating from 1,400 feet. Moments before his cue to talk, Boeing Tower calls to point out an airplane nearby, banking over Elliott Bay for final approach into the airport. Stahl glances left, sees the plane. "Chopper 7, traffic in sight," he replies.

The KIRO news theme music kicks in. Steve Raible and Susan Hutchison begin reading the headlines. In a moment, their top story. But first, breaking news. Clark Stahl is live in Chopper 7 over West Seattle . . .

Professor under fire after assignment asks students to create a ‘slave persona’

SAN DIEGO — Some people at San Diego State University were outraged after a class assignment directed students to create a “slave persona.”

>> Read more trending news

Amari Jackson, a who said she is enrolled in an Africana Studies class at San Diego State University, posted a screenshot of the assignment on Instagram . The screenshot shows the assignment is to create a “slave persona” and asks students to include name, gender, age, the type of work they are expected to do, and says, “Be sure to address the event/circumstances surrounding your escape and process.”

The accompanying caption reads, “But hey, at least my professor canceled the in-class presentations where she wanted us to act and then dress in our personas.” Jackson noted the presentations were canceled because of time limitations.

The class, “Introduction to Africana Studies: Social and Behavioral Sciences,” is described by the university’s website as an “Interdisciplinary introduction of African American thought and behavior. Subject areas include social systems, economic empowerment, self development, family dynamics, use of power, cognitive styles, interethnic communication and international relations.”

The class is taught by Professor LaShae Collins, and school officials confirmed to KFMB that Collins had canceled the presentations portion of the assignment.

In a statement posted to Instagram , the Afrikan Student Union said, “Professor Collins is a well-respected faculty member who has served the SDSU community for many years. She has been at SDSU for 24 years and has worked in the Africana Studies department for the last 19 years. Professor Collins has worked in the area of Ethnic Studies curriculum development, legislation, etc., throughout her tenure. It is to be mentioned that the next day after the unfinished narratives were posted in news outlets, Professor Collins ensured the student was both heard and understood in her classroom. We as students know that Professor Collins would never do anything to harm students and is committed to ensuring that every student is heard and respected inside and outside the classroom. We have come to understand that the discipline of Africana Studies is built upon the community experience and healing around it … This unfortunate misunderstanding is being resolved within the Black community between students, faculty, and staff as a collective.”

“We need to learn about how we come together as a Black community, and how we handle when even someone who is Black in our community has harmed people in that community,” Tasha Williamson, a community activist, told KFMB .

Robbie Jackson, a student enrolled in the class, told the school’s student newspaper, The Daily Aztec , that the assignment “felt really insensitive” and he would not be turning it in. Two other students, who did not want to be identified, also told the newspaper that they would not be doing the assignment.

School officials did not tell KFMB whether students were still required to complete the assignment for a grade.

With KCBS’s ‘The Desk,’ Assignment Editors Tell The Story

Less than 25 minutes after an SUV plowed into more than two dozen sheriff’s recruits on a jog through Whittier, a city in Los Angeles County, images of the horrific scene were beamed from the KCBS chopper to the station’s airwaves . Details of the unfortunate event were scant but trickling in, with viewers learning what happened about as quickly as the KCBS newsroom was.

kiro 7 assignment desk

“This is a very chaotic scene,” Liu informed viewers. “I have been listening to this on the radio and my colleagues Esteban and Annette on the assignment desk have been calling Los Angeles sheriffs to get more information as this is unfolding.”

He was able to report that the car that struck the recruits and its driver remained on the scene, so it was not a case of hit-and-run. Liu also said first responders were shutting down lanes of nearby highways to transport the injured to local hospitals.

For around 10 total minutes Liu shared the rest of the information he had about the incident with KCBS News morning anchors before they interviewed a retired member of the fire department, who provided insight into what the scene’s first responders appeared to be doing.

The segment was one example of a new KCBS broadcast initiative, The Desk . During morning and evening news shows on KCBS and its sister station KCAL, both of which are CBS-owned, assignment desk editors Liu and Mike Rogers discuss the stories members of the newsroom are working on — breaking news and, sometimes, enterprise stories as well. When producers choose not to interrupt the broadcast, one of the assignment editors may deliver breaking stories on the KCBS website streaming channel.

The Desk is the brainchild of Mike Dello Stritto, VP and news director at KCBS and KCAL. Like so many others in the industry, Dello Stritto has bounced around the country during his career, working in newsrooms in Florida, Tennessee, Nevada and elsewhere. After taking his current position in February 2022, Dello Stritto committed himself to finding a way to further leverage what he believes is the finest assignment desk in America.

kiro 7 assignment desk

Mike Dello Stritto

He says The Desk is the “next generation” of the breaking news desk, which he recalls became in vogue about a decade ago, likely after some news consultants told stations it would add immediacy to their broadcasts.

“Still, it was filtered; [the news] had to go through a middle manager, through a process,” Dello Stritto says about the old breaking news desk feature. “Did it make things faster? Probably a few things, but really some of it was just playing a little television smoke-and-mirrors.”

With The Desk , any middlemen have been cut out of news delivery. Anchors throw to Liu or Rogers at the assignment desk, which was built into the station’s new studio, launched Jan. 5, with a camera at the ready. (In the old digs, several cameras were placed around the assignment desk for varying shot selections.) Once on the air, the assignment editors simply discuss what they know about a new story, while reporters travel to a scene and prepare their packages.

“In other worlds, the assignment editor would be telling the reporter what they’ve learned,” Dello Stritto says. “In our world, we’re telling the viewer right away instead of telling the reporter.”

At the very least, The Desk is a low-tech means of producing new content with a virtual net-zero impact on workflow. Assignment editors were already doing this job; now they’re just doing it on camera. More crucially, in this period of consumer distrust in news organizations, Dello Stritto says The Desk is an opportunity to provide viewers with critical transparency. Authenticity shines through; Liu and Rogers don’t dress like anchors, nor were they trained in news delivery — which was precisely the point.

“I don’t want them to go through a process where we’re trying to take the real person out of them and make them ‘a broadcaster,’” Dello Stritto says, inflecting his voice at the end to sound more formal. And while KCBS has several other assignment editors on staff, Dello Stritto nominated Liu and Rogers for the on-air duty based in large part on their innate ability to verbally project well, which they otherwise display when dishing out assignments to reporters and producers.

kiro 7 assignment desk

Mike Rogers

“There’s nothing more exciting than being on an assignment desk in the most unique news market in the world,” Rogers says. “Finding and gathering information — especially breaking news — has been my passion for the nearly 10 years I’ve been in broadcast journalism. When I was presented with the opportunity to do my job in a new and unique way, while maximizing the viewer experience, I immediately agreed.”

Rogers sees The Desk as an opportunity for KCBS and KCAL to “bolster” the “trust and reliability” they’ve built with consumers for years. His assignment desk peer, Liu, says the segment is a “grand experiment” that’s “pulling back the curtain on how we gather the news and putting it on the air faster and with greater depth than we have before.”

“It’s equal parts exhilarating and terrifying because there’s no template as to how this should look or feel,” Liu says. “We have evolved it every day since we started, and it’s already become this dynamic, awesome thing.”

Dello Stritto has scoured the news industry for similar programming and says, so far, he hasn’t seen anything else quite like The Desk anywhere else. He conjures the phrase “imitation is the finest form of flattery,” but observes that other stations might not have the right personnel to develop their own version of The Desk : extremely well-trained, passionate assignment editors with natural on-air reporter chops.

Though The Desk is just a few months old, Dello Stritto says the audience is taking to it. They find it “refreshing” and are developing a connection to Liu and Rogers, he says.

“The attraction is that they are regular guys doing their job and then telling people what’s happening,” he says. “People are expressing that in different ways, but there are strong indications that viewers are latching on to not only the concept, but to these guys who are delivering it. My hunch is it’s because of that transparency and authenticity, that it doesn’t look and feel like a television news anchor who’s sitting there, yet they’re delivering in a compelling, clear way.”

Great idea…but not new. We tried this exact idea with the “News Outside the Box” concept at KIRO in Seattle in 1992. And it really depends on the ability of the assignment desk personnel to tell a story…as indicated in the KCBS example. What’s old is new again…

I presume KCBS also saves money with this approach. It’s cheaper to use an in-house assignment editor than it does to send a reporter and photographer to the scene. And, as anyone who follows the TV news business knows, CBS is in the midst of cutting costs.

This is fundamentally no different than when major-market TV stations starting using one-man-band MMJs. Managers promoted the concept as a new chapter of visual storytelling and innovation and blah blah blah, but be real: it costs less to pay one person do the jobs of two people.
