How to Start an Infrared Sauna Spa Business in Canada and the US

Starting a spa or infrared sauna business in the United States or Canada can be challenging. Arranging for the right collection of spa services might include cosmetic treatments, personal care, and alternative medicine practitioners. Generally, a spa may include massage therapy, saunas, steam rooms, and/or whirlpools. Before opening your infrared sauna spa business, consider the services you’re interested in offering and what you want to accomplish.

Saunas fall into the category of ‘day spas’ and ‘personal care services’ as opposed to ‘beauty salons’ or ‘hair salons’, although they are occasionally combined with these. Before starting your infrared sauna spa business, there’s some paperwork you need to get out of the way. Firstly, you need to find out if there are any local licenses or regulations which will apply to your spa business. Knowing these will help guide your business space development and how/where/what services are offered. Next, you’ll need to incorporate or register your business with the government and lastly, you’ll need to get set up with the relevant tax accounts and know what amount needs to be collected.

When it comes to therapeutic treatments which infrared saunas can sometimes be portrayed as, you’re responsible for ensuring all legal and regulatory requirements are met. If you have acupuncturists, aromatherapy practitioners, chiropractors, homeopathic doctors, naturopathic doctors, and/or massage therapists, you will likely need verification of certification and licensing from a regulatory body. To this point, any medical device you use for medical purposes needs to be verified by the appropriate parties or agencies in government. What we highly recommend before starting is to speak with a lawyer skilled in small business law to ensure all paperwork’s completed.

Among all this, you also need to find a space where you know you’re going to be safe and appropriate to operate. You may have multiple options to choose from or you may not. The bottom line is that you set up a space you know is going to be ideal for finding and treating customers, and which is in line with your personal branding. To that last point, there’s no shortage of places to go to enjoy an infrared sauna or spa treatment. If you want to differentiate, that comes in your branding. Things like a name, logo, website, social media accounts, and registration of your business name all needs to take place before you open for business. Consider inspiration from similar businesses, media or books you’ve read, or elsewhere. Define what you want to represent to your clientele and what your objective is in serving the community around you. Budget-wise you will also want to set aside the necessary funds for advertising and marketing.

How much it costs to open a day spa can vary however it’s not uncommon to see start-up costs creep up to $90,000-$100,000 and above. This will be needed to lease your space, purchase equipment, handle payroll, marketing and advertising, furniture, insurance, and relevant business permits. If you don’t already have funding, you’ll need a plan on how to get it and where. Planning’s a time investment. It doesn’t cost any money. Invest your time in planning though and you may be able to avoid a lot of trouble coming down the line.

Infrared Sauna Business Plan

This business plan outlines the establishment of an infrared sauna studio that will offer private and group sauna sessions to capitalize on the growing popularity of infrared therapy. By targeting middle to upper income health-conscious consumers aged 30-60 with top-tier facilities and customer service, the business is positioned to generate strong revenues and profits long-term based on industry growth projections. However, the business requires sizable upfront investment to launch.

Understanding the Infrared Sauna Market

The first step in developing your infrared sauna business plan is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the infrared sauna market. By analyzing the current state of the industry, market trends, and potential opportunities, you will be equipped with the knowledge necessary to make informed business decisions. In this section, we will explore the following key aspects:

Introduction to the Infrared Sauna Industry

The infrared sauna industry has witnessed a remarkable evolution, transforming from a niche wellness concept to a mainstream self-care staple in recent years. Historically, saunas have been a part of various cultures’ traditions for centuries, but the emergence of infrared saunas in the 20th century marked a significant departure from conventional steam-based saunas.

Infrared saunas operate by using infrared heaters to emit radiant heat, which penetrates the body’s tissues more effectively than traditional saunas, promoting a deep, detoxifying sweat and various health benefits. This unique approach has garnered a surge in popularity, driven by the growing emphasis on holistic well-being. Today, the demand for infrared saunas continues to rise as individuals seek relaxation, stress relief, and improved health.

As the wellness and self-care market expands, the infrared sauna industry is poised for substantial growth, with future trends likely to include advanced technology integration, customizable sauna experiences, and a broader range of health-focused services, cementing its position as a pivotal player in the wellness landscape.

Target Market Analysis

Our infrared sauna business has meticulously identified its target market, aiming to cater to a diverse group of individuals seeking holistic well-being and relaxation. Demographically, our primary audience includes health-conscious adults aged 25 to 65, with a focus on urban and suburban areas.

Psychographically, our customers are characterized by their proactive approach to self-care, mindfulness, and stress management. They value natural and alternative health solutions, emphasizing preventive wellness over reactive healthcare. Their purchasing decisions are heavily influenced by health and wellness concerns, with a keen interest in detoxification, pain relief, and stress reduction.

Lifestyle choices, such as maintaining an active and balanced life, play a pivotal role in their preferences. Moreover, this target market typically enjoys disposable income, making them willing to invest in premium wellness experiences. As the wellness industry continues to grow, we anticipate a steady increase in the size of our target market, with some seasonal variations and regional concentrations in areas with a strong health and wellness culture.

Competitor Analysis

In the competitive landscape of the infrared sauna market, a thorough analysis has been conducted to identify both direct and indirect competitors. Direct competitors include established wellness spas and boutique sauna studios that offer similar infrared sauna experiences. These competitors often provide a range of wellness services, including massage therapy, yoga classes, and holistic health consultations. Pricing strategies vary, with some emphasizing premium experiences, while others offer more accessible options. Their target markets typically align with health-conscious individuals seeking relaxation and health benefits.

Indirect competitors encompass home sauna equipment manufacturers and sellers, as well as gym and fitness centers that may have sauna facilities. Home sauna equipment providers cater to those seeking long-term personal wellness solutions, while gyms often offer saunas as part of their membership packages, attracting fitness enthusiasts.

Competitive advantages among direct competitors stem from factors like location, the breadth of wellness services offered, and customer loyalty programs. To distinguish our business, we plan to focus on a premium, customized sauna experience, superior customer service, and a strong online presence to engage and educate our target market. Additionally, we are monitoring emerging competitors closely, especially in the technology and wellness sectors, to adapt to evolving market dynamics and maintain a competitive edge.

SWOT Analysis

Our SWOT analysis for the infrared sauna business has provided valuable insights into our internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. Internally, our strengths lie in our unique, premium sauna experience, which includes customizable sessions and exceptional customer service. We also possess a team with expertise in wellness and customer care. However, our business is currently limited by its single-location status, potentially limiting market reach.

Externally, opportunities are abundant in the growing wellness industry, with increasing consumer interest in holistic well-being and relaxation. Market trends favor our offerings, and regulatory changes support our health and wellness focus. However, threats such as economic downturns impacting consumer discretionary spending and potential competition from emerging wellness technologies need to be monitored closely.

Utilizing this SWOT analysis, we plan to capitalize on our strengths by enhancing our premium offerings and expanding our online presence. We’ll address our weakness by exploring options for future expansion and diversification. Opportunities will be seized by staying agile and adapting to evolving wellness trends, while threats will be mitigated through a proactive approach to monitoring the competitive landscape and financial stability. This analysis forms the basis for our strategic planning to ensure the sustained success of our infrared sauna business.

Creating Your Infrared Sauna Business Model

Offerings and Pricing

When establishing your infrared sauna business, it’s crucial to carefully determine the types of sessions you’ll offer to cater to a diverse clientele. You may choose to provide individual sessions for those seeking solitude and relaxation, group sessions for a more social experience, or even customized packages tailored to specific needs.

To enhance the overall customer experience, consider incorporating additional services and amenities like aromatherapy, chromotherapy, or comfortable relaxation areas. When setting your pricing strategy, factor in your operational costs, the preferences of your target market, and the competitive landscape in your area.

It’s wise to explore membership plans or discounted packages as well to encourage repeat visits and foster customer loyalty, ensuring the long-term success of your infrared sauna business.

Location and Setup

To kickstart your infrared sauna business successfully, begin by meticulously researching and pinpointing suitable locations that align with your target market. Prioritize factors like accessibility, visibility, and proximity to potential clients. Calculate the space requirements for your facility, taking into account the number of sauna units, changing rooms, and relaxation areas.

Craft a thoughtful layout and design to establish a comfortable and welcoming ambiance for patrons. Lastly, safeguard compliance with local zoning regulations, building codes, and health and safety requirements to ensure a smooth and lawful operation of your sauna business.

Partnerships and Suppliers

To bolster the growth and appeal of your infrared sauna business, it’s vital to explore potential partnerships with businesses that complement your offerings, such as fitness centers, wellness spas, or health clinics. These collaborations can extend your reach and introduce your services to fresh audiences. Additionally, invest time in researching and cultivating relationships with dependable suppliers for infrared sauna units, accessories, and maintenance services to ensure the quality and longevity of your offerings. Moreover, contemplate teaming up with wellness practitioners or experts who can provide supplementary services or expertise, elevating the overall customer experience and reinforcing your position as a holistic wellness destination.

Revenue Streams

When establishing your business strategy for your infrared sauna venture, it’s crucial to identify your primary revenue streams, which may include session fees, membership fees, or product sales. However, to maximize your financial potential, it’s wise to also delve into additional revenue opportunities. This could involve retailing products related to infrared saunas, such as wellness accessories, or providing refreshments and wellness products to enhance the customer experience. Furthermore, consider diversifying your revenue streams by exploring options like corporate wellness programs, hosting wellness events, or partnering with local businesses for promotional collaborations. These approaches not only boost your income but also expand your reach and engagement within the community, ensuring a thriving and sustainable business.

Once you have established your infrared sauna business model, it’s time to develop a comprehensive marketing and sales strategy. Develop a compelling brand story that resonates with your target market and sets you apart from competitors. Create a visually appealing and cohesive brand identity, including logo design, color scheme, and brand messaging. Craft a brand positioning statement that communicates your value proposition and differentiates you from other infrared sauna businesses.

Marketing Channels and Tactics

Identify the most effective marketing channels to reach your target market, such as online platforms, social media, local advertising, and partnerships. Develop a digital marketing strategy that includes website optimization, search engine optimization (SEO), content marketing, and social media marketing. Consider traditional marketing tactics, such as print advertising, direct mail, and local community outreach, to reach a broader audience. Leverage influencer marketing, partnerships with wellness influencers or local fitness experts, to increase brand awareness and credibility.

Sales Strategy and Forecast

Define your sales process, including lead generation, customer acquisition, and retention strategies. Train your sales team to effectively communicate the benefits of infrared sauna sessions and convert leads into customers. Implement customer relationship management (CRM) software to track leads, manage customer interactions, and analyze sales data. Develop sales forecasts to set realistic sales goals and measure the success of your marketing and sales efforts.

By carefully crafting your brand identity and positioning, identifying effective marketing channels and tactics, and developing a sales strategy that aligns with your business goals, you will be well-equipped to attract and retain customers in the competitive infrared sauna market. Remember to continuously analyze and optimize your marketing and sales efforts based on customer feedback and market trends to stay ahead of the competition.

Operational Plan for Your Infrared Sauna Business

The operational plan is a crucial aspect of your infrared sauna business as it outlines how you will run your day-to-day operations effectively and efficiently. In this section, we will cover key considerations for staffing and management, equipment and supplies, customer service strategy, and health and safety regulations.

Staffing and Management

Determine the staffing requirements for your infrared sauna business, including front desk personnel, sauna attendants, and cleaning staff. Develop job descriptions and conduct a thorough hiring process to recruit qualified and experienced individuals. Create a training program to ensure that your staff is knowledgeable about infrared saunas, customer service, and safety protocols. Implement a management structure that clearly defines roles and responsibilities, promotes communication, and fosters a positive work environment.

Equipment and Supplies

Research and invest in high-quality infrared sauna units that meet industry standards and provide the desired health benefits for your customers. Procure necessary equipment and supplies such as towels, robes, cleaning products, and maintenance tools. Establish relationships with reliable suppliers to ensure a steady and cost-effective supply of equipment and supplies. Develop a maintenance schedule to regularly inspect and service the sauna units to ensure optimal functionality.

Customer Service Strategy

Develop a customer service strategy that emphasizes exceptional service, personalized experiences, and customer satisfaction. Train your staff on how to interact with customers professionally, address their needs, and provide guidance on sauna usage. Implement a feedback system to capture customer feedback and address any concerns or issues promptly. Develop loyalty programs or referral programs to incentivize repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals.

Health and Safety Regulations

Familiarize yourself with local health and safety regulations pertaining to infrared saunas, including sanitation, ventilation, and temperature control requirements. Implement proper cleaning and sanitization protocols to maintain a clean and safe environment for your customers. Ensure that your sauna facility meets all building code and fire safety regulations. Regularly inspect and maintain safety features such as emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits.

By carefully addressing staffing and management needs, acquiring necessary equipment and supplies, implementing a customer service strategy, and adhering to health and safety regulations, you will ensure the smooth and safe operation of your infrared sauna business. Remember to continuously monitor and improve your operational processes to provide the best possible experience for your customers.

Financial Plan for Your Infrared Sauna Business

Developing a comprehensive financial plan is essential for the success and sustainability of your infrared sauna business. In this section, we will guide you through the key components of a financial plan, including start-up costs, revenue projections, profit and loss forecast, cash flow statement, and break-even analysis.

Start-up Costs

Identify and estimate the initial costs involved in setting up your infrared sauna business, including lease or purchase of premises, renovation or construction costs, permits and licenses, equipment purchases, and initial inventory. Consider other start-up expenses such as marketing and advertising, professional fees (e.g., legal and accounting), insurance, and administrative costs. Calculate the total start-up costs and determine how you will finance these expenses, whether through personal savings, loans, or investments.

Revenue Projections

Forecast your revenue based on factors such as the number of infrared sauna sessions per day, average session price, and estimated occupancy rate. Consider seasonal variations in demand and adjust your revenue projections accordingly. Research and analyze market trends and competitor performance to ensure realistic revenue projections. Regularly review and update your revenue forecasts based on actual performance and market conditions.

Profit and Loss Forecast

Prepare a profit and loss forecast, also known as an income statement, which outlines your projected revenue, cost of goods sold, and operating expenses. Include all revenue streams, such as infrared sauna sessions, additional services, and product sales. Estimate your costs, including labor, rent, utilities, supplies, marketing expenses, and any other operational expenses. Calculate your projected net profit by subtracting your total expenses from your projected revenue.

Cash Flow Statement

Develop a cash flow statement that tracks the inflow and outflow of cash in your business. Include revenue, expenses, loan repayments, equipment purchases, and any other cash transactions. Monitor your cash flow to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover expenses, invest in growth opportunities, and manage any cash flow gaps.

Break-even Analysis

Conduct a break-even analysis to determine the point at which your revenue covers all your expenses and you start making a profit. Calculate your break-even point based on your fixed costs, variable costs, and the average contribution margin per unit. Use the break-even analysis to set sales targets, evaluate pricing strategies, and make informed business decisions.

By developing a thorough financial plan that includes start-up costs, revenue projections, profit and loss forecast, cash flow statement, and break-even analysis, you will have a clear understanding of the financial aspects of your infrared sauna business. Regularly review and update your financial plan as your business evolves to ensure that you remain on track to achieve your financial goals.

Why Health, Wellness & Infrared Sauna Therapy?

Well-ness: (noun) the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.

As the quest for the ‘fountain of youth’ continues to be at the forefront with an aging baby boomer population, and now gen-X, xennial and millennial populations, the wellness industry continues to rise, flourish, and profit, year-over-year. Now a $4.2 trillion global industry , the wellness industry has grown 12.8% in the last two years with no signs of slowing down. Healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss account for $702 billion, fitness & mind-body for $595 billion, personal care, beauty & anti-aging for $1,083 billion, and spa economy for $119 billion according to the Global Wellness Institute 2018 inaugural report.

Why is this important and how does it support the infrared sauna business model? People have been using saunas for centuries for all types of health conditions. The appeal of saunas, in general, is that they cause reactions similar to those elicited by moderate exercise, such as vigorous sweating and increase heart rate. An infrared sauna produces these results at lower temperatures than does a regular sauna, which makes it accessible to people who can’t tolerate the heat of a conventional sauna. The radiant heat from the sauna surrounds you and penetrates deeply into your joints, muscles, and tissues increasing oxygen flow and circulation. As a result, there is an array of infrared health benefits. Infrared helps to remove impurities from your cells, specifically the cells inside our fat where our body stores waste and harmful toxins such as cholesterol and heavy metals. The 8 main benefits of infrared sauna therapy include weight loss, detox, stress relief, muscle recovery & pain relief, skin health & anti-aging, increased immunity, and disease-fighting.

By developing a wellness studio centered around addressing the targeted needs of our market through the use of infrared and adjunct therapies, we are able to tap into this over $4 trillion industry and increase the overall health and wellness of our community.

How to Build a Sauna Empire: A Step-by-Step Guide to Starting Your Own Sauna Business

Learn the secrets to building a successful sauna business from the ground up. This step-by-step guide shows you how to start your own sauna empire.

The heat is on for sauna businesses. According to recent industry reports, the global sauna and steam bath market is heating up and expected to reach over $5 billion by 2025. If you're an entrepreneur looking for a hot new business opportunity, starting a sauna company could be it. Saunas are an ancient tradition that have become popular again, with more people seeking their health and relaxation benefits. However, getting into the sauna business does require careful planning and execution. You need to determine your business model, secure financing, find a good location, buy high-quality equipment, hire qualified staff, and market your new venture. Here's a step-by-step guide to starting your own sauna company and tapping into this growing wellness trend. Turn up the heat and get ready to build your own sauna empire!

The Sauna Market: Hot and Getting Hotter

The sauna and steam bath market caters to a wide range of customers, from high-end luxury spas to neighborhood gyms and community centers. However, your target audience will depend on the specific business model you choose. If you want to open an upscale sauna spa, your target customers will likely be affluent health and wellness enthusiasts looking for a luxury experience. You would focus on high-quality facilities, premium amenities, and a very personalized level of service. For a mid-range sauna business, your target audience may be members of local gyms, athletic clubs and community centers. You would provide good facilities and service at a more moderate price point. There is also potential to operate on a larger scale, franchising sauna studios or selling sauna equipment for home use. This mass market approach could reach a much wider range of customers with more affordable options. No matter which direction you go, the sauna industry as a whole is poised for significant growth. Saunas have become popular for both recreational and therapeutic use, as more people seek natural ways to relieve stress, detoxify the body and improve health and well-being. The market for commercial saunas, in particular, is heating up around the globe.

Developing Your Sauna Product and Service

The centerpiece of your sauna business will be the facilities and services you provide to customers. You'll need to invest in high-quality sauna equipment, showers, lockers, and any additional amenities you want to offer. However, simply installing a sauna is not enough. You need to create an overall sauna experience that will keep customers coming back. Some ways to differentiate your business include: •Offering unique sauna styles like infrared, salt saunas or steam rooms in addition to traditional Finnish saunas. This variety can attract more customers with different interests. •Providing add-on wellness services such as massage therapy, acupuncture, or yoga. Combining sauna use with other therapeutic treatments creates a more holistic experience. •Developing custom sauna infusion blends using essential oils and natural scents. Infusing the sauna with eucalyptus, lavender or citrus blends can enhance relaxation and detoxification. •Offering guided sauna meditation or sound healing. Adding an element of mindfulness or sound therapy takes the sauna experience to a new level. •Providing high-quality amenities like plush towels, slippers, organic skincare products, and bottled water. Attention to detail and a spa-like feel will impress your customers. •Training your staff as "sauna consultants" to assist customers in the proper sauna use and health benefits. Well-informed staff can help guide your clients to the best experience. The key is delivering an exceptional sauna experience that keeps people coming back again and again. Focus on high standards, consistency, and continuous improvement to build a loyal customer base for your sauna business.

The Economics of Running a Sauna Business

Starting a sauna business requires a substantial initial investment in equipment, facilities, and infrastructure. High-quality commercial saunas typically range from $10,000 up to $50,000 or more, depending on size and features. You'll also need showers, lockers, plumbing, electrical systems, and possibly additional wellness areas. The total cost to start a small sauna spa can easily reach $100,000-$500,000 or more for a large, full-service facility. Your ongoing costs will include rent, utilities, insurance, marketing, staffing, amenities, and regular maintenance. You'll need to determine a pricing structure that covers your costs and generates a good profit margin. Many sauna businesses charge per session, with single sessions ranging from $20-$50 or more, and package deals for multiple visits at a lower per-session rate. Some other pricing strategies include: •Membership plans: Offer monthly or annual memberships for unlimited sauna access at a fixed monthly rate. This provides recurring revenue and loyal customers. •Bundling with add-ons: Charge a base rate for sauna access, then offer bundles that include extras like massages, facials, and other spa treatments at a discount. This upselling can increase your profits. •Group rates: Charge lower rates for groups, athletic teams, and corporate groups. Group bookings can fill excess capacity and introduce new customers to your business. •Premium packages: Provide premium sauna options, amenities and services at a higher price point for those wanting a luxury experience. This tiered pricing captures customers at multiple levels. Keeping costs under control and optimizing your pricing are key to running a profitable sauna business. You need enough margin to market your services, provide high quality facilities and customer service, and generate a good return on your investment. With the right combination of a great sauna experience and competitive pricing, you can build a sustainable and successful sauna company.

Marketing Your Sauna Business

Effective marketing is essential for any new business, and a sauna company is no exception. You need to spread the word about your new venture to attract customers and build your brand. Some of the top strategies for marketing a sauna business include: •Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Optimize your website and content for search engines like Google to rank higher in search results. Focus on keywords like "sauna spa," "infrared sauna," and "sauna therapy." SEO can drive organic traffic and new customers. •Social Media Marketing: Create profiles on Facebook, Instagram, and Google My Business to increase visibility and engage with customers. Post photos, share updates on your facilities and services, and promote the health benefits of sauna use. Build a social media following and encourage shares, likes, and reviews. •Direct Marketing: Send email newsletters, postcards or flyers to local residents to spread awareness of your business. Offer promotions and discounts for new customers. You can also do demonstrations at local gyms, community centers, and health events to showcase your services. •Advertising: Place ads on websites, in local publications, and on social media targeting health-conscious consumers in your area. Advertise any introductory offers to capture new clients. Co-op advertising with related local businesses like gyms, spas, and physical therapy clinics is also effective. •PR and Partnerships: Pitch stories to local media, bloggers, and podcasts on the health benefits of saunas and your new business. Pursue partnerships and cross-promotion with complementary wellness providers. Sponsor local athletic teams or events to increase brand visibility in your community. •Referral Programs: Offer existing customers incentives to refer new clients. Word-of-mouth referrals from happy customers are one of the best ways to grow your sauna business. Create referral cards for customers to share with friends and family. •Reviews: Ask satisfied customers to leave positive reviews on sites like Yelp, Google, and Facebook to help build credibility and trust. Reviews are social proof that can influence new customers. Offer a small incentive in return for a review to increase participation.

Sales Strategies for Your Sauna Business

To build a successful sauna company, you need effective sales strategies to convert new customers and keep existing clients coming back. Some key sales techniques for a sauna business include: •Free Trials and Intro Offers: Offer free or discounted trials for new customers to experience your sauna services. A trial allows them to feel the benefits firsthand and often leads to a long-term client. You can also offer introductory packages at a lower price point for those who want to try it out. •Upselling: Once customers experience your basic sauna service, introduce them to upgrades and add-ons to increase their experience. Upsell them to premium sauna sessions, guided wellness therapies, massage packages or skincare products. Educate them on the additional benefits to make upselling more compelling. •Bundling: Offer package deals that bundle multiple sauna sessions at a lower per-session price. Bundling is an easy way for you to generate more sales and for customers to save money while committing to regular use. You can also bundle sauna access with other wellness services you provide. •Loyalty Programs: Start a loyalty or rewards program to keep customers coming back. Offer perks like a free sauna session on their birthday, discounts for referring friends, or rewards points that can be redeemed for future services. Loyalty programs build a recurring customer base. •Relationship Building: Train your staff in relationship building and customer service. Get to know your clients and their needs, preferences, and health goals. Provide a personalized experience and recommendations tailored to each customer. Strong relationships lead to higher customer retention and loyalty. •Seasonal Promotions: Run promotions based on the season to boost sales. In the winter, promote saunas as a way to relax and de-stress. In the summer, focus on detoxification and rebalancing the body. Offer discounts and bundles timed with the seasons and holidays. •Corporate Rates: Approach local companies about offering discounted or bulk rates for employee wellness programs. Corporate packages are an easy way to generate more sales and gain exposure for your business. Provide special hours or areas for corporate groups.

Operations and Execution

To operate a successful sauna business, you need to focus on the details that will provide an exceptional customer experience. Some key areas of operations and execution include: •Staffing: Hire friendly, knowledgeable staff and provide ongoing training. Your staff represents your brand, so they must be able to give customers advice on proper sauna use and the health benefits. They should maintain the facilities, assist clients as needed, and help to create a relaxing vibe. •Facilities Management: Keep your sauna, showers, and amenities clean and well-maintained. Conduct regular testing and servicing of sauna equipment to ensure proper function and safety. Replace towels, slippers, and any consumable items. Maintain a serene environment with minimal noise and optimal temperature. •Customer Service: Greet customers as they arrive and show them around the facilities. Provide clear instructions on how to use the sauna and any rules to follow. Check on customers during their session to see if they need additional water or assistance. Thank them for their visit and invite them back. High-quality, personalized service will make a good impression. •Health and Safety: Follow all regulations for commercial sauna operations in your area. Keep fire extinguishers and first aid kits readily available. Train staff on how to properly respond in an emergency. Require customers to sign a liability waiver before using your facilities. Maintain high standards of hygiene and conduct regular cleaning and maintenance. •Continuous Improvement: Monitor customer reviews and feedback to make ongoing improvements to your services and facilities. Stay up-to-date with trends in the sauna and wellness industry. Provide additional training for your staff. Make upgrades to equipment and amenities over time. Continuous improvement is key to building a successful sauna business. With diligent operations and execution, you can deliver an exceptional sauna experience for your customers. Pay close attention to details, focus on high standards, and always look for ways to improve. Your customers will appreciate your commitment to excellence.

Legal Considerations

Before starting a sauna business, you need to research the legal requirements in your city and state. There are regulations on commercial sauna operations for health, safety, zoning, and business licensing. Some things you will need to determine include: •Business licensing and permits: You will need a general business license or permit to operate. There may also be additional licenses required for massage therapy, esthetics or other services you offer. •Zoning regulations: Commercial saunas must be properly zoned for business use. Check with your local planning department on requirements for your type of business. •Building codes: Your facilities will need to meet standards for ventilation, plumbing, electrical systems, and handicap accessibility. Schedule an inspection to ensure your space meets all building codes before opening. •Health department regulations: There are strict hygiene, sanitation, and operational standards set by health departments for saunas and spas. Meet with your local health department to understand all regulations before starting your business. •Liability waivers: Require all customers to sign a liability waiver to use your facilities. Waivers protect you from potential lawsuits in the case of health issues or injuries. You may need a lawyer to draft an appropriate liability waiver for your business. •Insurance requirements: Obtain proper business insurance to protect yourself, including general liability, property, and professional liability insurance. Some insurers offer specialized coverage for spa and wellness businesses. Be sure to research and understand all legal requirements before investing in and opening your sauna business. Compliance with regulations and minimizing liability is essential to operating a safe, reputable and sustainable company. Neglecting these important legal considerations could result in penalties, fines or even force you to shut down.

Heat Up Your Business Plans

Starting a sauna company allows you to tap into the growing wellness industry and help more people achieve health and balance in their lives. However, it does require careful planning and execution to build a successful business. By developing an exceptional sauna experience, optimizing your pricing, implementing marketing strategies, focusing on sales, and diligently managing operations and legal compliance, you can create a sustainable company that provides real value to your clients. All You Need To Know About Infrared Sauna Business Benefits

Adding an infrared sauna to your fitness business can be a great way to take care of your clients, increase retention and add a source of additional revenue.

The demand for these facilities is growing year after year . But does adding a sauna to your business make sense or is it just a fad? In this article, we walk through everything you need to know about Saunas and choose if the purchase of a Sauna is right for your business.

“As an owner of a small private gym that offers only personal training, I decided to add an infrared sauna to aid the recovery process for our clients. I choose the Sunlighten Mpulse due to it having low EMF and multiple types of infrared. Our clients have absolutely loved the effects it has had for them. Most people experience a very relaxed feeling after a session. A lot of users say they don’t have muscle soreness if they use the sauna right after a session. I think for its size and cost it adds a great ROI for both the clients and the business.” Dylan Ulrich, Owner 10Ten Fitness

What is an Infrared Sauna? Main Difference Between Infrared Sauna and Conventional Sauna

A sauna or steam room or sweat room is a space created to accommodate wet or dry heat treatments. For more than 2000 years, people have used steam-rooms and saunas to increase metabolism, lose weight, reduce pain, improve cardiovascular function, destress, and relax.

The key difference between a conventional sauna and an infrared sauna deals with the heated area. A conventional sauna works indirectly by heating the area around your body whereas the infrared sweat room works directly on your body. A conventional sauna heats the air in the room and all the surfaces of the room.

An infrared sweat room generates heat using light. This sauna directly heats your body without warming the space around you. In addition, this sweat room can function at a lower temperature compared to the conventional sauna.

Infrared sweat rooms typically have temperatures between 110°F and 135°F. In a traditional sauna, temperatures typically range from 150°F to 195°F.

Benefits of Using an Infrared Sauna

Some of the advantages of using an infrared sweat room include, improved circulation, relieved muscle pain, stress relief, and detoxification. Let’s delve into each of these individually.

Improvement of Blood Circulation

After a few minutes in a sauna, your body will increase circulation as a cooling mechanism. On the skin, sweat beads start to form and evaporation dissipates heat. Your blood vessels enlarge and blood flow increases to transfer heat through the surface of your skin. This causes your heartbeat to accelerate and is one reason why exposure to this level of heat should be closely monitored and limited to 15 – 20 minute periods.

Relieving Muscle Pain

An infrared sweat room helps accelerate the healing of muscles after exercise. This is due to the relaxation and increased circulation caused by the heat exposure.

Relieves Stress

A sweat room can also help you to relieve stress.  Reduced depression  and  better sleep  are two of the stress related topics that have been reported in studies focused on the use of saunas.

Detoxification

A sauna session will make you sweat a lot. The more you sweat, the more your body gets detoxified and you feel fresh & healthy. The pores in your skin open fully during a sauna session and your heart rate increases. This helps to flush toxins from within the pores on your skin and within your body.

Some other notable advantages of an infrared sweat room include:

  • Loss of weight
  • Improvement of the sleep cycle
  • Help those suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Pain relief for the joints

What are the Types of Saunas I Can Install in My Business?

For a conventional sauna, you will need a dedicated room, large heating systems, and thick insulation.

On the other hand, an infrared sweat room business can be operated in very little space. A small sauna can take as little as 36” x 36” and fit 1 – 2 people. The slightly larger sauna that would fit 4 people still has a footprint as small as 71” x 41”. Either of these can be connected to a 120V/20A circuit.

Most fitness businesses only need a 1 – 4 person infrared sauna. This is because the sauna can be scheduled for use by members.

Some gyms and large fitness centers have saunas and steam rooms that can accommodate ten or more people at once. While these facilities can seem impressive, it’s rare for them to be fully occupied. Furthermore, people will often skip using the sauna when more than just a few people are there even if the space is large enough for ten people. That is because nobody likes sitting shoulder to shoulder with a stranger in a sweat-room.

A more efficient solution is to have one or multiple, smaller, infrared saunas that members can schedule in advance. This allows for private use of the sweat-room with lower electric costs by not heating such a large space.

Use Software to Effectively Schedule Your Sauna

Software can help you effectively and smoothly schedule your sauna. Plan2Play is a great resource for your fitness business, including the sauna. Your staff and clients can schedule their use of the sauna and receive email or text notifications in a user-friendly and mobile-friendly system. Take a look at  all the ways Plan2Play can help with your fitness business .

Is adding a Sauna Profitable?

There are a couple of ways that a sauna could add profit to your fitness business. This will depend on how you add this feature to your existing business and introduce it to your clients.

The sauna could be included with your existing memberships or it could be an additional paid service. How this is positioned in your business will change how you calculate your ROI. You could have an increase in membership renewals and signups, or you could have a new line of revenue.

How Much Does An Infrared Sauna Business Make?

Some infrared sauna manufacturers suggest that you can buy a 1 – 4 person commercial infrared sauna for around $5,000 – $10,000 and become profitable within the first 1 – 3 months. This seems reasonable for an existing fitness business with a client base which is adding a new service and possible revenue line for the business.

1. Define The Type Of Sauna Business

The first step in starting a sauna business is to determine what type of sauna business you want to open. There are several options to consider:

  • Traditional Sauna: This is the most common type of sauna and uses rocks to heat the air, which in turn heats the room. This type of sauna is usually made of wood and has a bench or two for people to sit on.
  • Steam Sauna: This type of sauna uses a steam generator to heat the air and create a high level of humidity. This can be a good option for people who cannot tolerate dry heat or have respiratory issues.
  • Infrared Sauna: Infrared saunas use infrared heaters to heat the body directly instead of heating the air. This can provide a deeper sweat and a more comfortable experience for some people.

You should also consider whether you want to open a public sauna, a private sauna, or both. A public sauna will require more space and permits, but can cater to a larger customer base. A private sauna may be a good option if you want to offer a more personalized experience or cater to a specific clientele.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Do market research to see what type of sauna business would be most successful in your area.
  • Consider offering a variety of sauna types to cater to different preferences.
  • Think about your target audience and cater your sauna business to their needs.

2. Research Local Regulations

Starting a sauna business requires more than just finding a location and buying saunas. Before launching your business, it is important to research the local regulations that apply to your type of business. Here are the essential steps to consider:

  • Contact Your Local Government Agency or Chamber of Commerce
  • Check Zoning Laws and Permits
  • Research Safety and Sanitation Standards
  • Review Licensing, Liability, and Insurance Requirements
  • Learn About Environmental and Health Regulations
  • Take time to research thoroughly before investing in your sauna business.
  • Visit the local government office or chamber of commerce to clarify your questions or concerns regarding the regulations.
  • Take caution with the environmental and health regulations since they may change and update over time.
  • Consult with a lawyer or insurance agent to ensure you meet all the necessary licensing, liability, and insurance requirements for your saunas.
  • Contact an experienced consultant to help you understand the environmental and health regulations up to your area since they can clarify the necessary steps you need to take to comply with government regulations.

3. Create Business Plan And Financial Model

After conducting market research and analyzing your competition, it is time to create a solid business plan and financial model for your sauna business. This will serve as a roadmap for your operations and help you secure funding from investors or lenders.

Business Plan

  • Executive Summary: This should include a brief overview of your business, your target market, and your goals and objectives.
  • Market Analysis and Strategy: A detailed analysis of your target market, its size and demographics, and your competitive advantage.
  • Products and Services: A description of your sauna products and services, including prices and packages.
  • Operations and Management: A breakdown of your day-to-day operations, including staffing, equipment, and maintenance.
  • Marketing Plan: A comprehensive marketing strategy to attract and retain customers, including advertising, promotions, and referral programs.
  • Financial Plan: A projection of your revenue, expenses, and profits for the next three to five years, including a break-even analysis and cash flow statement.

Financial Model

Your financial model should include a detailed budget, revenue projections, and a plan for managing cash flow. Consider hiring a professional accountant or financial consultant to help you with this aspect of your business. You should also be prepared to provide financial statements and other documentation to potential lenders or investors.

Tips & Tricks

  • Be realistic when projecting your revenues and expenses. Use conservative estimates to avoid overestimating your profits.
  • Consider different pricing strategies to attract different segments of the market, such as discounts for recurring customers or package deals.
  • Use online tools and resources, such as financial templates and software, to help you create your financial model and manage your finances.

By creating a solid business plan and financial model, you can ensure that you have a clear understanding of your operations and finances, and increase your chances of success as a sauna business owner.

4. Obtain Necessary Permits And Licenses

In order to legally operate your sauna business, you must obtain the necessary permits and licenses required by your state and local government. These permits and licenses vary depending on your location and may include:

  • Business License
  • Zoning and Land Use Permit
  • Fire Department Permit
  • Health Department Permit
  • Building Permit
  • Signage Permit

Each of these permits and licenses will require an application and fee. It is important to research the necessary requirements for your area and apply for them in a timely manner to avoid any delays in opening your business.

  • Research the permit and license requirements early in the planning process to prevent any hurdles that may slow down or stop the opening of your business.
  • Double-check with your local licensing agency to ensure that you have all necessary permits in place before starting or opening your sauna business.
  • If you are unsure about the requirements, consider consulting with a business lawyer or accountant to avoid any legal issues.

5. Secure Funding

Starting a sauna business can be an expensive venture. You need to ensure that you have enough funds to cover the costs of setting up the business, along with its day-to-day running. Here are some steps that you can take to secure funding:

  • Prepare a Business Plan: Before you approach any investors, you need to have a strong business plan in place. This will help them understand your vision for the business and your plans for growth. Your business plan should include a detailed financial plan, with information on startup costs, projected revenue, and operating expenses.
  • Personal Savings: One of the easiest ways to fund your business is to use your own savings. However, this may not always be enough to cover all the costs. Nevertheless, it is a good idea to contribute as much as possible from your personal savings.
  • Borrowing: Consider borrowing from family, friends, or financial institutions like banks, credit unions, or venture capitalists. Keep in mind the impact of any debt on your business. It's important to have a repayment plan and a clear understanding of the interest rates and terms of borrowing.
  • Grants: Some organizations offer grants to small business owners. Look out for government grants, non-profit organizations, and other local initiatives that offer grants to new businesses.
  • Crowdfunding: Crowdfunding is an increasingly popular way for small business owners to raise funds. There are different types of crowdfunding platforms available where you can pitch your business idea and receive donations or pre-orders for your product in exchange for equity or other benefits.
  • Start building your credit score early - it will increase your chances of getting approved for loans and other financing options.
  • Consider starting small and scaling up once you start to generate revenue. This will reduce your upfront costs, and allow you to test and refine your business model.
  • Be realistic in your expectations when it comes to funding. It's unlikely that you will secure all the funding you need at once, so be prepared to take a phased approach.

Once you have secured funding for your sauna business, you need to ensure that you use it effectively. Keep track of your expenses, and ensure that you have enough funds to cover your day-to-day expenses, along with any unforeseen expenses that may arise.

Opening a sauna business requires hard work, dedication, and careful planning. By following the steps outlined in this checklist, you can set yourself up for a successful business. Remember, running a sauna business is not just about providing a service but also about providing the best customer experience possible. Strive to create a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for your customers so that they keep coming back to you.

6. Choose A Suitable Location

The location of your sauna business is key to its success. You need to find a spot that is accessible, convenient, and ideally, in an area with high traffic and demand for sauna services. Keep in mind that you may need to pay a premium for a good location, but it will pay off in the long run.

  • Start by researching the area you want to operate in and identify potential locations that meet your criteria.
  • Consider factors such as foot and vehicle traffic, proximity to complementary businesses such as gyms, hotels and apartment buildings, accessibility by public transportation, parking availability, and security.
  • Make sure the location is zoned for commercial use and meets all local regulations and codes.
  • Take into account the size of the space and the layout, as well as any necessary renovations or modifications that may be required.
  • Also, consider the demographics of the area and the potential demand for your services.
  • Visit potential locations at different times of the day to get a feel for the neighborhood and the flow of traffic.
  • Check with the local Chamber of Commerce and other business organizations for information and resources on suitable locations and zoning requirements.
  • Consider hiring a real estate professional who specializes in commercial properties to help you find the perfect location.

Choosing the right location for your sauna business takes time and effort, but it is well worth the investment. A great location will help you attract and retain customers, and it will ultimately contribute to the success of your business.

7. Purchase Equipment

Starting a sauna business requires a lot of planning, research, and preparation. One of the most important steps in opening a sauna business is purchasing the necessary equipment. In this chapter, we will cover the essential equipment you need to get started.

What Equipment Do You Need?

  • Sauna Heater: This is the heart of a sauna. There are various types of heaters such as electric, wood-burning, or gas. Choose the type that suits your budget and meets your needs.
  • Control Panel: This is the device that controls the temperature and humidity level in your sauna. It should be easy to use and reliable.
  • Benching: You need to have different layers of benches to sit on while enjoying the sauna. These benches can be made of wood, tile, or stone.
  • Lighting: To create a relaxing atmosphere, you need to have proper lighting in your sauna. It should be dim and soothing.
  • Ventilation: Aventilation system is required to maintain the proper airflow. It helps to control the humidity level and remove the excess heat.
  • Accessories: To enhance your customer's experience, you can add some accessories such as speakers, aroma diffusers, and temperature gauges.

Where To Buy The Equipment?

It is always recommended to buy your sauna equipment from a reputable supplier. You can search online or consult with a local contractor. Some popular manufacturers of sauna equipment are Finnleo, Helo, and Tylo.

  • Buy high-quality and durable equipment to save money in the long run.
  • Choose the equipment that suits your budget and needs.
  • Do not compromise on safety features. Saunas can be dangerous if not operated properly.

How Much Does It Cost?

The total cost of your sauna equipment will depend on several factors such as size, quality, and features. On average, you can expect to spend anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 for a basic setup. However, if you want to include high-end features, the cost can go up to $50,000 or more.

In addition to the equipment cost, you need to factor in the installation cost, which varies based on your location and contractor. It is always recommended to get multiple quotes before finalizing the equipment purchase.

That's all about purchasing equipment for your sauna business. In the next chapter, we will cover another important aspect of starting a sauna business, - finding the perfect location.

8. Market The Business

Marketing your sauna business is a crucial step in ensuring its success. Without effective marketing, your potential customers may not even be aware of your business. Here are some steps to help you market your sauna business:

  • Create a Brand - Start by creating an appealing brand that resonates with your target audience. Ensure that your brand stands out with a unique logo, color scheme and overall design that will make you instantly recognizable.
  • Identify Your Target Market - It is important to identify your target customers before investing in marketing efforts. Conduct market research to find out who your potential customers are, what they like, and where they spend their time. Use this information to devise targeted marketing strategies that will reach your intended audience.
  • Build a Website - A website is a vital tool in today's digital age. Build a user-friendly, well-designed website that provides all relevant information about your sauna business, including services offered, pricing, location, and contact details.
  • Invest in Online Advertising - Online advertising is necessary to reach potential customers who spend most of their time online. You can advertise on social media platforms, Google, and other relevant websites. Make sure that your ads are visually appealing and contain a clear call-to-action.
  • Partner with Other Businesses - Partner with other wellness-focused businesses in your area, such as yoga studios and health food stores. You can cross-promote each other's services and offer exclusive deals to each other's clients.
  • Get Involved in the Community - Participate in local events and donate your sauna services to charity auctions or events. This will help you to gain exposure in your local community and build valuable connections with potential customers.
  • Create a Social Media Presence - Social media is a powerful tool to help you reach your target audience. Create social media profiles for your sauna business and regularly post engaging content that will attract potential customers.
  • Offer Special Deals and Promotions - Offer discounts and promotions to attract new business and retain existing customers. This can include referral programs, loyalty programs, and package deals.
  • Solicit Reviews and Testimonials - Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews and testimonials on your website and social media profiles. Positive reviews can be an excellent marketing tool to attract new customers and build trust with your target audience.

Marketing is an ongoing process, and it's important to continuously evaluate your marketing strategies and make adjustments as necessary. Consistency and a strong brand identity are key to building a successful sauna business.

9. Hire And Train Staff

One key element to running any business is having a competent and well-trained staff. This is particularly important in a sauna business, where customers rely on staff members to assist with their experiences and ensure their safety. Here are some key steps to hiring and training your staff:

  • Identify your needs: Determine how many staff members you will need to run your sauna business and what roles they will need to fill. Consider your budget and the level of service you want to provide.
  • Write clear job descriptions: Create detailed job descriptions for each position you are hiring for. This will help you attract the right candidates and ensure you are on the same page regarding their roles and responsibilities.
  • Advertise job openings: Post job openings on job boards, social media, and your website. Consider reaching out to local schools or training programs to find candidates with relevant certifications or experience.
  • Conduct interviews: Conduct thorough interviews to determine which candidates will be the right fit for your business, both in terms of skills and personality.
  • Train your staff: Once you have hired your staff, ensure they are well-trained in all aspects of your sauna business. This includes safety procedures, customer service, and how to use any equipment or products you offer.
  • Consider offering ongoing training to your staff, to ensure they stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices.
  • Make sure your staff is well-versed in any local or state regulations related to saunas.
  • Consider cross-training your staff, so they can fill in for other roles if needed.

By taking the time to hire and train a strong team, you can ensure that your sauna business runs smoothly and provides a high level of service to your customers. Remember, your staff is a reflection of your business, so investing in their success is an investment in your own.

10. Evaluate And Adjust Plan

After launching your sauna business, it's important to evaluate and adjust your plan as you go. This will help you stay on track, improve your business's performance, and stay competitive in the industry. Here are some important steps to take:

  • Analyze your financials - Take a close look at your financial statements to see if you're meeting your revenue and profit targets. If not, identify areas where you can cut costs or increase sales.
  • Assess customer satisfaction - Ask for feedback from your customers and see if there are any areas where you can improve their experience. Consider offering surveys or incentives to encourage honest feedback.
  • Monitor industry trends - Stay up to date with the latest industry news and trends to stay ahead of the competition. Attend conferences, read industry publications, and network with other sauna business owners.
  • Revisit your business plan - After a few months of operation, review your business plan and make any necessary adjustments. Consider revising your marketing strategy, expanding or changing your services, or adjusting your pricing.

By taking these steps, you can ensure that your sauna business stays on track and continues to grow and thrive.

  • Keep in touch with other sauna business owners to stay up to date on best practices and industry trends.
  • Consider offering seasonal promotions or discounts to attract new business and keep existing customers engaged.
  • Invest in staff training and development to improve the quality of your services and customer experience.

Are you looking to enhance your client's experience with your wellness business? Surprisingly, not all businesses know how to get the most out of their infrared saunas, and in this blog, we're going to spill the beans on how you can operate your infrared sauna for business and have your customers raving about you – long after their visit. Get ready to take some notes and discover the best way to use an infrared sauna for your wellness business.

Operating Your Infrared Sauna in a Commercial Setting

To ensure that your clients have a positive wellness experience, it is important to understand how to operate an infrared sauna correctly. Here are the main tips for operating an infrared sauna in a commercial setting that not all business owners are aware of. Let's get into these top tips from Clearlight® Saunas!

Set the Temperature to Its Maximum:

You must set the temperature to its maximum on the control pad. In an infrared sauna, when the thermometer reaches the desired temperature, the heaters automatically turn off.

Set the temperature to its maximum to keep the infrared heaters running continuously at their maximum output. Infrared heat only works when the infrared light is in direct contact with the body, which causes the core temperature to rise and activates the infrared sauna health benefits .

If your infrared sauna is continuously turning off –  attempting to lower the inside cabin temperature – then your clients won't be getting the full benefits of infrared heating. Keep your sauna at its max for the full range of benefits!

Adjust the Temperature (cool-down) with the Door:

If the infrared sauna is too hot for your clients then prompt them to open the sauna door instead of adjusting the temperature.

The temperature of the cabin is not as important as the temperature of the skin because infrared heat causes sweating by heating you from the inside out.

To maximise the benefits of the infrared sauna at lower temperatures, customers should keep the infrared heaters on but leave the cabin door open for fresh, cool air. This provides the benefit of feeling cooler while the core body temperature remains high.

infrared sauna business plan

Leave It Running Even When Not in Use:

Leaving your infrared sauna running, even when not in use, ensures that it remains hot and ready for your clients.

Infrared saunas running costs are extremely low so ensuring that the sauna is always operating at its maximum temperature will guarantee positive benefits for your customers.

Leaving the sauna on, even when no one is using it, helps to evaporate any excess moisture generated during use and before the next customer arrives, which is an added advantage.

Clean the Infrared Sauna Regularly:

Regular cleaning of your infrared sauna is essential to ensure that it remains hygienic and free of bacteria. It is important to regularly clean the surfaces after each use using natural cleaners and microfiber cloths.

For best results, thoroughly clean the interior and exterior surfaces at least once a week, preferably at the end of each day. To make it more difficult for bacteria and viruses to stick to the surface of the infrared sauna, it is important to regularly clean it and set the heaters to their highest heat setting.

Ensure Clients Are Using Towels:

It is essential to provide towels to your clients to prevent sweat and other bodily fluids from coming into contact with the sauna surfaces. Encourage clients to use towels and provide additional towels.

Consider the number of towels needed, including a towel to wear, a towel for the sauna bench seats, towels for the sauna floor, and possibly an extra one for body wiping.

infrared sauna business plan

Educate Clients Before Use:

Before clients use your infrared sauna, educate them on the health benefits and sauna etiquette. Let them know what to expect during their session and how to use the sauna properly, including the basics such as hydration, that it is best to sauna on an empty stomach , the benefits of a cold shower after sauna use, how long they should sauna for benefits, and how they will feel after their sauna session. When people become more aware of the benefits, they will be more likely to want to come back again.

Set Up Bluetooth and Chromotherapy Lights:

Make sure you are showcasing the key features of the infrared sauna. The best-infrared saunas can enhance the sauna experience and provide a more relaxing, quality experience with high-quality Bluetooth speakers and medical-grade chromotherapy lights.

Always ask your clientele if they value having sound and Bluetooth connected, as some may want to remain as low EMF and ELF as possible. Whether or not they should take a phone into a sauna is completely up to them as if they prefer to disconnect or not.

Chromotherapy lights have proven health benefits on mood, relaxation and stress relief. So making sure they are guided on the sauna-coloured light benefits and how to use the chromotherapy is important for their session.

Maintaining Your Commercial Infrared Sauna

If you are a business aiming to promote health and wellness, investing in an infrared sauna is a great idea. But, for your infrared sauna to provide the best benefits, it is important to maintain it properly. This section will guide you on how to maintain your commercial infrared sauna.

  • Clean Your Sauna Regularly: It is important to clean your infrared sauna regularly to keep it hygienic and free of bacteria, which can also help prolong the lifespan of your sauna as previously discussed. It is recommended to refrain from using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can harm the wood and may result in off-gassing.
  • Check the Infrared Heaters: To make sure that they are working properly, check the heating elements regularly for any indication of damage or wear, like cracks or discolouration. If you notice any issues, contact your provider and reference your sauna warranty information.
  • Inspect the Wiring and Electrical Components: Regularly inspect the wiring and electrical components of your infrared sauna to ensure that they are in good condition. Look for any signs of damage or wear, such as frayed wires, built-up moisture or loose connections.
  • Schedule Professional Maintenance: To ensure your infrared sauna lasts, regular cleaning and inspections are helpful but scheduling professional maintenance is crucial. Having a professional technician inspect and repair potential issues, such as door hinges and backrests, can keep your sauna in optimal condition.

Feel good about your Sauna Service

To keep your commercial infrared sauna safe and enjoyable for clients and ensure its longevity, you should use the following tips. Regular maintenance is crucial for getting maximum benefits from the sauna.

This involves frequent cleaning, temperature checking, and inspection of heating elements, wiring, and electrical components. It is also vital to schedule professional maintenance.

Let's discuss how infrared saunas can benefit business owners and their clients, specifically exploring their advantages in improving business outcomes.

Benefits of Infrared Saunas for Business:

Regular use of infrared saunas promotes health and wellness by improving circulation, detoxifying the body, reducing inflammation, and promoting relaxation. This makes them a valuable addition to an existing business that focuses on health and wellness, such as gyms, spas, and health clinics.

Invest in New Customers' Experiences: with Saunas

By adding an infrared sauna to your business, you can improve the client experience with a distinctive and soothing atmosphere either pre or post-treatment.

Offering your customers some time to relax and unwind after their treatment can be of great value to them. Allowing them to have some extra "me-time" and giving the treatment time to settle in can be very beneficial for their parasympathetic nervous systems and enhance their overall experience.

For a healthcare service business, this can also differentiate your clinic from its competitors.

The best Infrared Saunas can Increase Revenue:

Businesses can earn additional income by offering sauna sessions and incorporating them into package deals. This can encourage clients to explore other services available at the establishment. Infrared saunas, in particular, can be a lucrative revenue source for business owners.

Low Maintenance and Operating Costs:

Business owners may find infrared saunas appealing due to their ease of maintenance and operation. They require less energy and preheating time compared to steam and traditional saunas, resulting in lower operating costs. Moreover, they are relatively low-maintenance as they do not use water, thus lowering the chance of mould or other maintenance issues.

3 Steps to Include Infrared Saunas into Your Business

Adding an infrared sauna to your business can be a smart choice that benefits both you and your clients. The health and wellness advantages of these saunas can help attract new customers and offer an exceptional experience that differentiates your business from others.

  • Identify Your Target Audience: This will assist you in identifying the most effective marketing strategies for promoting your sauna, as well as deciding which complementary services to provide. For instance, if your main customer base is athletes, you could consider including sauna sessions as part of a package for sports massages.
  • Choose the Right Size: It is essential to take into account the size of your space and the number of clients who will concurrently use the sauna. The size of the sauna depends on the needs and space of your business. A smaller sauna might work for a small business, while a gym or spa that is frequently busy may require a larger one.
  • Train Your Staff: It is essential to train your staff on how to use the infrared saunas correctly if you are planning to include them in your business. Staff should be trained on the proper settings, use of features, any add-ons or wellness tools, the cleaning and maintenance procedures, and of course the health benefits of the sauna.

Infrared saunas have low running costs and are easy to use, making them a potential source of additional revenue for businesses. They can enhance the overall customer experience, improve treatment outcomes, and allow for easy up-selling to existing customers.

Steam Sauna and Traditional Sauna for Business

Another investment for an additional income stream for your fitness or lifestyle spa are traditional saunas and steam rooms. These two other popular sauna session options typically can be found in much larger and more expensive establishments. On average, the costs of these saunas, in Australia and the world, are much higher than infrared equivalents. This is for both the build, size requirements, electrical and running costs, as well as maintenance and care costs.

Having the best sauna session

When it comes to having the best sauna experience, regular visits to an infrared sauna work wonders to relieve pain, heal muscles and joint pain, remove toxins and heavy metals, improve skin complexion, facilitate weight loss, and more! Infrared heat not only costs less than traditional and steam saunas but also provides a greater variety of benefits that will have your clients returning time and time again.

Wrapping up Infrared Sauna Business 101's

As you can see, operating an infrared sauna in a commercial setting requires a great deal of consideration and preparation. From ensuring the right temperature is set to regularly cleaning the sauna, you have a lot to do to keep it safe for clients. But once you’ve got the hang of things, running your commercial infrared sauna smoothly should be no problem. Don’t forget Bluetooth technology and chromotherapy lights — they’re sure to make the experience much more enjoyable for anyone using your sauna!

If you want the most out of your wellness clinic or spa treatment experiences, look into Clearlight Saunas — top-of-the-line infrared saunas are sure to fit perfectly into any business environment!

But it's more than just a single sauna - it's a whole facility dedicated to the sauna experience. In this article, we'll explore what a sauna resort is and why it could make a great business idea.

  • A sauna resort typically offers multiple saunas and steam rooms of different sizes and heat levels. This allows guests to choose the type of sauna experience that is right for them.

  • In addition to saunas and amenities, sauna resorts may also offer other services like massage therapy or yoga classes. This allows guests to customize their experience and spend an entire day relaxing and unwinding.
  • Sauna resorts can cater to a wide range of clientele, from individuals looking for a relaxing spa day to couples seeking a romantic getaway to groups of friends and colleagues looking for a unique bonding experience.
  • Furthermore, the market for sauna resorts is growing. As people become more focused on self-care and wellness, the demand for these types of facilities is increasing.

Navigating Regulations and Compliance

The sauna business comes with its share of regulations and compliance requirements, which can vary widely depending on your location. Marketing: Turning Up the Heat

In today's digital age, having an effective online marketing strategy is as crucial as the physical aspects of your sauna business. Utilizing social media platforms to showcase customer experiences can create an enticing image that draws people in. Email marketing campaigns offering special promotions or informative content about sauna benefits helps keep your audience engaged. Collaboration with local businesses or influencers can also amplify your visibility within the community. Making Use of Design Tools Like Desygner

In every step of branding and marketing your sauna business, visuals play an indispensable role. It empowers entrepreneurs to take control of their brand's appearance efficiently while maintaining high-quality outputs. Leveraging such tools ensures that every aspect of your sauna business looks polished and professional.

Sealing Your Sauna Success

Starting a venture of this nature is not only about offering relaxation and health benefits to your clients but also about embarking on a journey of personal and professional growth. The path may be steamy with challenges, yet with determination and strategic planning, success is within reach.

Remember, the foundation of a successful sauna business lies in understanding your market and defining your niche. Whether it's luxury saunas, family-friendly options or wellness retreats, identifying what uniquely defines your service will set you apart from competitors. Equally important is crafting an unforgettable customer experience; this involves everything from the ambiance of your facilities to the quality of your services.

Financial planning cannot be overlooked. A detailed business plan that covers everything from startup costs to projected revenue will serve as your roadmap. It's crucial to brace yourself financially for the initial phase where expenses may outweigh income. Additionally, marketing plays a pivotal role in the growth of your sauna business. Utilizing both traditional and digital marketing strategies will enhance your visibility and attract a steady stream of customers.

  • Understand your target market
  • Define your unique selling proposition (USP)
  • Create an immersive customer experience
  • Prioritize financial planning and budgeting
  • Invest in comprehensive market research
  • Develop a solid business plan
  • Embrace both digital and traditional marketing techniques
  • Leverage tools like Desygner for professional marketing materials

A sauna installation company sells saunas to homeowners, hotel resorts, and fitness gyms and they provide services for every aspect of delivery and installation of the unit. Saunas are used by individuals who wish to enjoy a Finnish Sauna Bath experience, where they enjoy a heated room filled with steam generated by pouring water over rocks. Saunas include the heated sauna, a prep area, and are often connected to a shower room or pool. Installation services require electrical work, basic construction, sound system, lighting, and possibly plumbing. What will you name your business?

  • What are the startup and ongoing costs?
  • Who is your target market?

How much can you charge customers?

Luckily we have done a lot of this research for you.

Choosing the right name is important and challenging. If you don’t already have a name in mind, visit our How to Name a Business guide or get help brainstorming a name with our Sauna Installation Business Name Generator

When registering a business name , we recommend researching your business name by checking:

  • Your state's business records
  • Federal and state trademark records
  • Social media platforms
  • Web domain availability .

It's very important to secure your domain name before someone else does.

You will need about $200,000 to be able to order the sauna kits, lighting, and accessories. In addition, you will need to invest in marketing and transportation before your income starts to roll in. If you wish to operate a storefront or a display in a big-box store, you may need an additional $10,000 to $100,000.

What are the ongoing expenses for a sauna installation business?

Marketing and sales will always be a major cost for the business. However, you must have financing in place to be able to purchase the sauna kits for delivery on the client's schedule. Expect to carry $100,000 to $200,000 in inventory at any given time.

Who is the target market?

Your preferred clients will mostly consist of wealthy homeowners and corporations. These homeowners will generally live in wealthy suburbs or urban areas, and they will have extra money to invest on upgrades to their homes. Corporate clients with multiple locations can provide a more constant stream of business for your company.

A typical sauna can be installed for as little as $3,000 while costs for larger units will can approach $25,000, depending on plumbing and electrical requirements.

How much profit can a sauna installation business make?

You will typically see a 10% profit on the cost of the sauna unit. Your real profit comes from installation fees. Experienced crews will complete the jobs faster, leaving more profit for the business. A successful sauna company can see net profits of $100,000 to $200,000 per year.

How can you make your business more profitable?

Time and consistent success will build your reputation as a reliable sauna installer. When your crew is kept busy installing units, and your marketing department continually shares your success stories, more interested customers will arrive and buy the next sauna, generating more profits.

Establishing a legal business entity such as an LLC or corporation protects you from being held personally liable if your sauna installation business is sued.

Form Your LLC

Recommended: You will need to elect a registered agent for your LLC. LLC formation packages usually include a free year of registered agent services . You can choose to hire a registered agent or act as your own.

STEP 3: Register for taxes

You will need to register for a variety of state and federal taxes before you can open for business.

In order to register for taxes you will need to apply for an EIN. It's really easy and free!

You can acquire your EIN through the IRS website . If you would like to learn more about EINs, read our article, What is an EIN?

There are specific state taxes that might apply to your business. Learn more about state sales tax and franchise taxes in our state sales tax guides.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account & credit card

Using dedicated business banking and credit accounts is essential for personal asset protection.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk in the event your business is sued. In business law, this is referred to as piercing your corporate veil .

Open a business bank account

Besides being a requirement when applying for business loans, opening a business bank account:

  • Separates your personal assets from your company's assets, which is necessary for personal asset protection.
  • Makes accounting and tax filing easier.

Recommended: Read our Best Banks for Small Business review to find the best national bank or credit union.

Get a business credit card

Getting a business credit card helps you:

  • Separate personal and business expenses by putting your business' expenses all in one place.
  • Build your company's credit history , which can be useful to raise money later on.

Recommended: Apply for an easy approval business credit card from BILL and build your business credit quickly.

STEP 5: Set up business accounting

Recording your various expenses and sources of income is critical to understanding the financial performance of your business. Keeping accurate and detailed accounts also greatly simplifies your annual tax filing.

Make LLC accounting easy with our LLC Expenses Cheat Sheet.

STEP 6: Obtain necessary permits and licenses

Failure to acquire necessary permits and licenses can result in hefty fines, or even cause your business to be shut down.

State & Local Business Licensing Requirements

Certain state permits and licenses may be needed to operate a sauna installation company. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits .

For information about local licenses and permits:

  • Check with your town, city or county clerk’s office
  • Get assistance from one of the local associations listed in  US Small Business Associations directory of local business resources .

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax will affect your business, read our article, Sales Tax for Small Businesses .

Service Agreement

Sauna installation businesses should consider requiring clients to sign a service agreement before starting a new project. This agreement should clarify client expectations and minimize risk of legal disputes by setting out payment terms and conditions, service level expectations, and intellectual property ownership. Here is an example service agreement.

Recommended: Rocket Lawyer makes it easy to create a professional service agreement for your sauna installation business when you sign up for their premium membership. For $39.95 per month, members receive access to hundreds of legal agreements and on call attorneys to get complimentary legal advice.

Certificate of Occupancy

A sauna installation company can be run out of a storefront. Businesses operating out of a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy (CO).  A CO confirms that all building codes, zoning laws and government regulations have been met.

  • If you plan to lease office space :
  • It is generally the landlord’s responsibility to obtain a CO.
  • Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that is applicable to a sauna installation company.
  • After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business will be renovated before opening, it is recommended to include language in your lease agreement stating that lease payments will not commence until a valid CO is issued.
  • If you plan to purchase or build office space :
  • You will be responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government authority.
  • Review all building codes and zoning requirements for you business’ location to ensure your sauna installation company will be in compliance and able to obtain a CO.

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just as with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance in order to operate safely and lawfully. Business Insurance protects your company’s financial wellbeing in the event of a covered loss.

There are several types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks that your business may face, begin with General Liability Insurance . This is the most common coverage that small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start for your business.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses need is Workers’ Compensation Insurance . If your business will have employees, it’s a good chance that your state will require you to carry Workers' Compensation Coverage.

FInd out what types of insurance your Sauna Installation Business needs and how much it will cost you by reading our guide Business Insurance for Sauna Installation Business.

STEP 8: Define your brand

Your brand is what your company stands for, as well as how your business is perceived by the public. A strong brand will help your business stand out from competitors.

If you aren't feeling confident about designing your small business logo, then check out our Design Guides for Beginners , we'll give you helpful tips and advice for creating the best unique logo for your business.

How to promote & market a sauna installation business

While saunas are growing in popularity, many people still don't understand how they work or what the benefits may be. You will want to work at trade shows offering demonstrations of your available designs. Attend health conferences and sports medicine expos to connect with companies who may be looking to add saunas to their locations. Build your website using photos of completed jobs and reviews from happy customers. Marketing will be your main job, while your crew works on installing the saunas.

How to keep customers coming back

Many of your new customers will have used one of your saunas at their gym or resort. Make sure to provide sales brochures wherever your units are installed in public locales. Offer maintenance services for existing saunas, so they will call you for additional services when they wish to upgrade or renovate. Work with physical therapy offices to connect with patients who may benefit from installing a home sauna. You should always be looking for the chance to open a conversation with a potential client who may not even know what a sauna can do for them.

STEP 9: Create your business website

After defining your brand and creating your logo the next step is to create a website for your business .

While creating a website is an essential step, some may fear that it’s out of their reach because they don’t have any website-building experience. While this may have been a reasonable fear back in 2015, web technology has seen huge advancements in the past few years that makes the lives of small business owners much simpler.

Here are the main reasons why you shouldn’t delay building your website:

  • All legitimate businesses have websites - full stop. The size or industry of your business does not matter when it comes to getting your business online.
  • Social media accounts like Facebook pages or LinkedIn business profiles are not a replacement for a business website that you own.
  • Website builder tools like the GoDaddy Website Builder have made creating a basic website extremely simple. You don’t need to hire a web developer or designer to create a website that you can be proud of.

Recommended : Get started today using our recommended website builder or check out our review of the Best Website Builders .

Other popular website builders are: WordPress , WIX , Weebly , Squarespace , and Shopify .

STEP 10: Set up your business phone system

Getting a phone set up for your business is one of the best ways to help keep your personal life and business life separate and private. That’s not the only benefit; it also helps you make your business more automated, gives your business legitimacy, and makes it easier for potential customers to find and contact you.

There are many services available to entrepreneurs who want to set up a business phone system. We’ve reviewed the top companies and rated them based on price, features, and ease of use.
