Why Is Honesty Important in a Friendship? (16 Reasons)

In the realm of friendship, honesty forms an invisible contract, a pledge between hearts that cements the bond with integrity. It’s a promise to face the good, the bad, and the ugly together, without pretense or the masks we often wear for the world. It acts as a mirror, reflecting back to us not just who we are but who we aspire to be—in the company of friends who honor that honesty with their own.

As we embark on this exploratory journey into the heart of friendship, we delve into probing questions and unspoken truths. How does the presence or absence of honesty shape the connections we hold dear?

Pursue this inquiry with an open heart as we delve into the vital essence of honesty in friendships, and ponder whether the depth of our connections is truly predicated on the truths we share.

Honesty Builds a Strong Foundation of Trust

When friends consistently tell the truth, they create a reliable and predictable environment where both parties feel secure. A friend who is honest inspires confidence in the other, fostering a mutual sense of assurance. This trust isn’t formed overnight—it’s a product of consecutive actions that verify each other’s reliability.

Trust is cultivated through:

  • Consistent truthfulness
  • Reliability in actions
  • Mutual assurance

For instance, when one friend entrusts another with a personal secret or challenge, the expectation is that the information will be respected and kept confidential. Honesty in this context extends beyond just truthful dialogue—it encompasses actions like discretion and support.

As the loop of trust tightens with each honest exchange, it forms a resilient bond robust enough to withstand the tests and trials that friendships often face.

Honesty Fosters Open and Genuine Communication

Open and clear communication in a friendship is akin to oxygen; it’s essential for survival and thriving. Honesty acts as the conduit for such communication, allowing friends to express their thoughts, feelings, and desires without fear of judgment or reprisal. This sincerity can lead to meaningful conversations that are authentic, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding.

For instance, consider the simple act of sharing an opinion. If a friend is not honest, they may:

  • Hide their real feelings to avoid conflict.
  • Make assumptions instead of stating their perspective.
  • Feel misunderstood or become resentful over time.

In contrast, with honesty as the guiding principle, both friends can feel confident and comfortable exchanging ideas. This exchange shapes a friendship where understanding and compassion take precedence over assumptions and misgivings.

Note that these dialogues aren’t just about deep or significant matters; they include light-hearted and mundane things too, which all contribute to a richer friendship tapestry.

Honesty Strengthens the Bond, and Understanding

When honesty is consistently present in a friendship, it becomes a powerful force that deepens the bond between friends. Understanding each other on a profound level is a privilege that honest exchanges can afford. Such understanding goes beyond surface-level acquaintanceship, delving into the realms of empathy and insight.

Understanding fostered by honesty encompasses the following:

  • Knowing a friend’s true character and values
  • Recognizing a friend’s aspirations and fears
  • Accepting a friend’s imperfections and strengths

Take, for instance, two friends who have shared sincere thoughts and experiences over the years. They’ll likely have a more robust bond because they’ve guided each other through life’s ups and downs with a transparent approach.

This mutual journey breeds a form of intimacy and camaraderie that is difficult to mimic in relationships fraught with pretense or superficiality. A strong bond, tempered by honesty, is instrumental in creating a lasting and fulfilling friendship capable of withstanding life’s inevitable changes.

Honesty Ensures That Both Friends Are on the Same Page

Ensuring that both parties in a friendship are on the same page is another crucial aspect of honesty. This alignment of understanding and expectations is fundamental in preventing miscommunications and fostering a harmonious relationship.

When friends openly discuss their thoughts and expectations:

  • They clarify their individual and collective boundaries.
  • They establish what they hope to achieve and experience in the friendship.
  • They confirm the mutual values and principles that guide the friendship.

For example, if a friend feels that the other is not investing enough time in the friendship, an honest conversation can clarify intentions and adjust unrealistic expectations. Clear communication keeps the friendship balanced and reduces the potential for disappointment and conflict.

Honesty Demonstrates Respect for the Friendship’s Integrity

Respect is a fundamental element of any friendship, and being honest is one of the most profound ways to show respect for another person and the friendship itself. It signals to the other party that you value the relationship enough to be truthful, even when it’s challenging.

When respect is manifest through honesty, it:

  • Protects the dignity of both friends
  • Honors the trust placed in the relationship
  • Upholds the sincerity of the connection

For example, if a friend makes a mistake, choosing to be honest about the situation rather than covering it up is a direct display of respect for the friendship. It shows a willingness to address issues head-on rather than allowing them to fester and potentially cause more considerable harm later on. This honest approach preserves the friendship’s integrity, confirming that the relationship is robust and genuine.

Honesty Allows Friends to Provide Constructive Feedback

In a true friendship, there will be times when constructive criticism is necessary for a friend’s personal growth or to avoid harmful behavior. This feedback, when delivered with honesty and caring intent, can be invaluable.

An honest approach to constructive feedback comes from a place of wanting the best for the other person rather than from judgment or the desire to control.

Elements of honest feedback include:

  • Speaking from one’s own experience and perspective
  • Aiming to support rather than criticize
  • Delivering the feedback in a way that is sensitive to the friend’s feelings

For instance, if a friend is consistently late to shared engagements without a valid reason, another friend might offer feedback by honestly expressing how this habit affects them, perhaps causing feelings of frustration or undervaluation.

When framed in a way that shows care for the other’s feelings and the friendship as a whole, this honest feedback can lead to positive changes that benefit both parties involved.

Honesty Allows for Vulnerability and Deep Emotional Connections

Opening up to a friend requires a leap of faith, an assurance that our innermost thoughts and feelings will be met with understanding rather than judgment. This vulnerability is essential for creating deep emotional connections that transcend the surface level of casual acquaintances.

Honesty in a friendship invites the sharing of personal struggles and triumphs, which, in turn, invites empathy and an authentic bond.

Impact of vulnerability and honesty on emotional bonds:

  • Facilitates genuine understanding of each other’s emotional landscape
  • Creates a safe space for sharing personal stories and feelings
  • Deepens the emotional connection through shared experiences

Embracing vulnerability reflects a trust that the friend will handle these revelations with care. It can forge a connection that is as profound as any familial bond, marked by a shared understanding rarely found in less transparent relationships.

Honesty Encourages Personal Growth and Self-Improvement

When friends are honest with each other, they have a unique opportunity to hold each other accountable and encourage growth. Honest exchanges can sometimes act as a mirror, reflecting not only our best qualities but also areas that need attention or change.

Considerations for personal growth include:

  • Identifying behaviors or habits that might be self-limiting or destructive.
  • Providing encouragement and praise for efforts made towards self-improvement.
  • Offering a fresh perspective or new ideas that challenge old patterns of thinking.

For instance, if a friend is procrastinating on important life decisions, an honest conversation could help them to acknowledge the issue and take actionable steps toward change. Sharing strategies that have worked for oneself or pointing to resources might be part of such a supportive dialogue.

Honesty Upholds the Ethical Values of Individuals

At the heart of a person’s actions and decisions lie their ethical values, which are upheld by honesty in friendships. When friends choose honesty, they are acting on principles that celebrate integrity and morality. This commitment resonates within the friendship, encouraging both parties to act in ways that reflect their respective codes of ethics.

By upholding these values, friends demonstrate to each other:

  • Their dedication to truth and justice.
  • A shared commitment to maintaining moral standards.
  • The importance of aligning actions with convictions.

For example, when facing a situation where there’s an opportunity to take credit for someone else’s work, a person’s choice to be honest and give proper recognition is informed by their ethical values. In friendships, witnessing such actions deepens respect and supports the idea that both individuals are committed to righteous living.

Honesty Makes It Easier to Forgive and Forget Past Mistakes

Forgiving and letting go of past mistakes is essential for any friendship to move forward. Honesty plays a critical role in this process. When mistakes are made, acknowledging them openly paves the way for genuine repentance and forgiveness.

This transparent approach to forgiveness often involves:

  • Admitting wrongdoing without defensiveness.
  • Discussing the impact of the mistake to understand and empathize.
  • Committing to change behavior to avoid repeating the same errors.

A life example is when one friend inadvertently hurts another—perhaps through a thoughtless comment or oversight. By honestly owning up to the mistake, expressing remorse, and working to ensure it doesn’t happen again, both friends can move forward without harboring lingering resentment or mistrust.

Honesty Contributes to Long-Lasting Friendship

Friendships that stand the test of time are often those in which honesty is a hallmark feature. When friends navigate life’s highs and lows with a commitment to truthfulness, they create a robust framework for their relationship to endure. It is the mutual understanding, consistent support, and reliance on each other’s honesty that fortify the bonds of friendship over time.

Consider the following:

An example could be how two friends, who have faced various challenges together with honesty and open communication, find their relationship strengthened rather than weakened by such trials. This resilience is a testament to the durability that honesty can foster in a lasting friendship.

Honesty Maintains a Clear Conscience

Keeping secrets or lying can weigh heavily on one’s mind, but honesty alleviates that burden, allowing both friends to maintain a clear conscience.

Honesty liberates friends from the stress and guilt that accompanies deceit, fostering a healthier mental state for both. It promotes peace of mind, reinforcing the friendship’s positive dynamics and creating an uplifting sense of personal integrity.

Here’s how honesty supports a clear conscience:

  • It eradicates the need for remembering lies or covering tracks.
  • It minimizes guilt associated with dishonest behavior.
  • It enhances mutual respect by ensuring fairness and transparency.

When friends know they have been truthful and forthright, they can enjoy their time together without any lurking disquietude about unresolved issues or unspoken concerns.

Honesty Helps to Resolve Conflicts Effectively and Fairly

Conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but honesty addresses disagreements head-on, which is crucial for fair and effective resolution. When friends are honest, they can articulate their viewpoints and understand the other’s perspective, seeking common ground and collaborative solutions.

Honesty breeds a problem-solving approach rooted in respect and equality, evident in:

  • Directly addressing issues rather than avoiding them
  • Being receptive to each other’s feedback during disagreements
  • Committing to resolutions that are mutually beneficial

For instance, when a misunderstanding arises over plans that were made, an honest discussion about what went wrong can prevent a similar issue in the future. By embracing honesty in the face of conflict, friends can navigate difficult conversations with less resentment and more resolution-oriented strategies, ultimately strengthening their relationship.

Honesty Endorses Accountability Within the Friendship

When friends hold each other accountable, they create a proactive dynamic that can foster growth and responsibility. Honesty is at the core of this accountability, as friends must truthfully point out when one may be straying from agreed-upon values or commitments. This kind of honest reflection between friends encourages a sense of responsibility to oneself and to the friendship.

Consider these three facets of how honesty promotes accountability:

  • It prompts friends to keep promises and commitments to each other.
  • It instills a practice of regular check-ins on personal progress or challenges.
  • It provides the impetus for friends to call each other out on actions that are not aligned with their best selves.

For instance, a friend might honestly remind another of their goal to practice healthier habits after noticing them repeatedly choosing unwholesome options. This is done with the intention of helping the friend stay true to their goals, offering a reminder from a place of care and commitment.

Honesty Aligns Actions With Words, Cultivating Reliability

For friendships to prosper, there must be a consistent alignment between what friends say and what they do—honesty enables this congruence. This alignment breeds reliability, as friends learn that they can count on one another to follow through on promises and commitments.

The alignment of words and actions entails:

  • Promises that are fulfilled not just spoken.
  • Consistent behavior that matches verbal commitments.
  • Dependability that is established through repeated actions.

Reliability forged in honesty is epitomized by the adage “ actions speak louder than words. ” For example, if one friend agrees to help another during a move, showing up and lending a hand solidifies that friend’s reliability.

Honesty Supports Emotional Well-Being and Self-Esteem

An honest friendship is instrumental in bolstering the emotional well-being and self-esteem of both parties involved. This support comes from knowing that praise and encouragement are genuine and that any critique is meant constructively and delivered with kindness.

The ways in which honesty enhances emotional health include:

  • Affirming a friend’s worth with sincere compliments.
  • Providing honest yet compassionate feedback.
  • Building confidence through trustworthy interactions.

An honest friend might, for example, recognize and affirm another’s talent, which can validate their self-worth and embolden them to pursue their goals. This sincere support has the powerful ability to uplift spirits and bolster self-esteem, contributing significantly to a friend’s overall emotional well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can honesty negatively affect a friendship.

While honesty is generally positive, if not delivered thoughtfully, it can sometimes be hurtful. It’s important to balance honesty with tact and kindness. Honest feedback should be given with the intent to support and uplift, not to criticize or harm. Honesty should always be accompanied by compassion.

How can you maintain honesty in a friendship without being hurtful?

Maintaining honesty without being hurtful involves practicing empathy and choosing words carefully. It’s essential to consider the friend’s feelings and deliver the truth in a supportive way. Sometimes it’s not just what is said but how it’s said that can make a difference. Being honest doesn’t mean being brutal; tactfulness is key.

How can you encourage honesty in a friend who is hesitant to share?

To encourage honesty from a hesitant friend, assure them of a safe and non-judgmental space. Show consistent understanding and patience, and lead by example by being honest yourself. Building this trust may take time, but it will encourage them to open up.

Final Thoughts

In a world that often celebrates the glossy over the genuine, it’s the honest friendships that anchor us to reality, enriching our lives beyond measure. These are the friendships that endure the trials of time, the companions who walk with us in light and in darkness, always willing to share the burden with nothing but pure intentions.

Let’s cherish these genuine connections, for they are the ones that truly reflect the essence of who we are and who we can become. May we approach our friendships with open hearts and honest words, sustaining and being sustained by the unbreakable bonds of trust and respect.

After all, at the end of our stories, it’s the chapters filled with truth, love, and loyalty that we’ll revisit time and again.

How To Be Honest With Your Friends (With Examples)

How To Be Honest With Your Friends (With Examples)

“I tend to tell people exactly what I think and feel, but sometimes I think it makes them uncomfortable. Where’s the line between being honest about your feelings and being too honest with friends?”

Honesty is important in a friendship because it creates a sense of mutual trust. But it’s not always easy to know when and how to be honest, especially regarding sensitive topics. In this article, you’ll learn how and when to balance truth and tactfulness.

1. Act in your friend’s best interests

Before you say something honest but potentially hurtful, ask yourself whether you are acting in your friend’s best interests. If the answer is “Yes,” it’s usually OK to be honest.

For example, if you know your friend hasn’t dressed appropriately for an occasion and their outfit could cause them some embarrassment, it’s good to be honest with them even if it feels awkward. It would be appropriate to say something like, “Hey, I should tell you that if you don’t smarten up a little before we go out, you might not be allowed into the club.”

2. Be honest if it will improve your friendship

If you think you are in a toxic friendship , it’s a good idea to be honest about how you feel if you want to try saving the friendship. Sometimes, people do not realize that they are hurting others. An honest conversation can lead to positive change.

Use this formula:

  • Briefly describe the behavior that is making you unhappy
  • Tell them how it makes you feel
  • Say what you’d like to happen in the future

For example:

“You often speak over me when we talk. When you interrupt me, I feel like you don’t care what I have to say. I’d like you to let me finish my sentences.”

3. Choose the right time and place to be honest

Do not embarrass your friend by delivering a blunt truth or raising a sensitive issue in front of other people. Be as discreet as possible.

For example, if they are flirting with someone else’s partner at a party and people are starting to stare, it would be best to take them aside to a quiet corner and say something like, “Hey, I know you’re having fun, but you’re clearly flirting with that guy, and people are starting to stare at you.” Calling them out in front of the other guests might put them on the defensive and start an argument.

4. Be gently honest rather than brutally honest

You can deliver an unpalatable truth without using harsh words.

Let’s say your friend asks you whether you like her new boyfriend. Your personal opinion is that she should stop seeing him because he is dull, lazy, and spends an inappropriate amount of time looking at other girls when you’re all out together.

A brutally honest response would be: “Your boyfriend is boring, openly gawks at other women, and you should dump him. He’s a loser.”

A gently honest response would be: “If you’re happy with him, then I’m happy for you. But I’ve noticed that he has a habit of looking at other women when you’re out, though, which isn’t good.”

A gently honest response:

  • Respects your friend’s feelings and choices
  • Makes it clear that you want the best for them
  • Refers to specific instances to make a point instead of relying on generalities (e.g., “he’s lazy,” “she’s annoying,” “you’re always late,” etc.)

Only resort to brutal honesty if both of the following are true:

  • You’ve tried gentle honesty
  • You truly think it’s essential that your friend hears what you have to say; for example if you know for sure that they are about to invest a large sum of money into a scam

5. Don’t offer unwanted advice

When a friend tells you about their problems, think carefully before jumping in with your opinion about what they ought to do. Unless they specifically ask you for advice, they are probably looking for empathy and understanding, not possible solutions.

For example, let’s say your friend, who you’ve known since you were both teenagers, is training to be a doctor. It seems an odd career choice for them because they’ve always been more interested in history and languages than science.

One day, they start telling you about their recent troubles:

Friend: “Med school is so hard. I’ve been so stressed lately, sometimes I even think I should drop out. I’m exhausted.”

Honest but unhelpful response: “Maybe you aren’t well-suited to medicine. Do you think you should switch to history instead? You were always good at that in school.”

Empathetic, more helpful response: “That sounds really rough. I always heard that medical school was hard. How long have you been feeling like this?”

When you know someone well, it’s easy to assume that you know what’s best for them but remember that they need to make their own decisions. Aim to be a good listener rather than an adviser.

Common questions about being honest with friends

Is it good to be honest all the time.

You should be honest with friends when it’s in their best interest or when you need to ask them to treat you differently. Before sharing your thoughts or feelings, ask yourself, “Is this helpful? Does my friend need to hear this?”

Should friends be honest with each other?

Honesty is a desirable trait in a friend. Friends should be honest with each other most of the time because honesty is key to building and maintaining trust.

Is brutal honesty good?

In some circumstances, brutal honesty can be the best option. For example, if your friend is about to make a very bad decision and has ignored tactful feedback, you can try being blunter when sharing your opinion.

Why Honesty Is Important In Friendship

  • May 21, 2021 May 21, 2021

honesty in friendship, reasons why you should be honest in a friendship, reasons why honesty is important in a friendship, honesty in friendships, being honest to a friend

A friendship will never last without honesty. It is the glue that keeps us together and it’s one of the most valuable possessions in any relationship. In this article, I want to discuss all the reasons why honesty is important in a friendship.

If there’s one thing I know, it’s that a friendship will never last without a fair deal of honesty.

Here’s a quick look at the reasons why honesty is important in a friendship.

  • It builds trust.
  • It shows respect for your friendship.
  • It helps you grow as a person.
  • Honesty prevents unnecessary drama.
  • Honesty in friendship creates loyalty.
  • You can open up to each other more freely.
  • Honesty is a loving thing to do.
  • Being honest can save a friendship.

With that being said, let’s discuss each of these reasons why honesty is important in friendship in more detail so that you have a better understanding of the role it plays in forming, nurturing and preserving a friendship for a lifetime.

1. It builds trust

For any friendship to survive and thrive, trust is an irreplaceable component. Without trust, a friendship will eventually cease to exist.

As far as I know, the only way to build trust in a friendship is through honesty.

Being able to share the truth with your friend, irrespective of how uncomfortable it makes you feel, is something to be celebrated.

Most people opt to take the easy route out but that creates a friendship built on an unstable foundation.

When you can be honest with your friend, they’ll trust you and vice versa. If the truth doesn’t tear you apart, nothing will and your friendship will be solidified.

2. It shows respect for your friendship

Much like trust, respect is another non-negotiable component of a healthy friendship. When you respect a friend, it will often be reciprocated.

If it’s not, then you are dealing with a toxic friend .

But, from what I know through experience and research, being honest often creates respect because it’s not always the easy thing to do.

The fact that you are willing to deal with the side effects of truth for the sake of respecting your friendship demands respect itself.

Even if your friend is upset with you, he or she will respect you for being honest and that can create ample opportunities to build a stronger and healthier friendship in the long run.

3. It helps you grow as a person

Honesty given and received not only helps a friendship develop into something stronger but it has the same effect on the people themselves.

There have been many times when being honest with a friend forced me to take responsibility for my actions.

True maturity develops when you become responsible.

Furthermore, getting honesty from my friends made me snap out of behaviors that were detrimental to my well-being.

The best relationships in your life will be those that help you to grow into a better person.

Friendships can offer that very same benefit as long as you both are willing to be honest with each other.

4. Honesty prevents unnecessary drama

Misunderstandings and drama are not always avoidable in friendships but when you are honest, it makes it infinitely easier to navigate these situations towards a resolution.

I have a friend who used to act cold, immature and rude when he was upset with me instead of just being honest.

He would also go behind my back and pretend to be a confidante.

Obviously, this tarnished the quality of our friendship and it’s hard to even look at him the same way because nothing has changed.

On the flip side, one of my healthiest and best friendships is with someone who exercises a great deal of honesty with me and I return the favor.

By doing so, we have avoided unnecessary drama and fights for over a decade.

5. Honesty in friendship creates loyalty

When a friend can be honest with you, especially if someone is doing something bad or wrong to you, it can build trust and loyalty.

Nobody likes to be left in the dark.

Even to information that is hurtful, it is far more rewarding to be respected and told the truth than to be lied to.

For this reason, when you can be honest with a friend even if it may be problematic to you at times, it can result in a great deal of loyalty being earned from that friend.

6. You can open up to each other more freely

Every one of us needs someone we can open up to freely without the worry of being judged.

If you allow things to fester inside you, it can be extremely stressful and detrimental to your well-being.

For this reason, having a friend you can be honest with will have a huge impact on your mental health.

This will give them the opportunity to be understanding, compassionate and supportive which will feel great to both of you.

On the flip side, by you being honest, it shows your friend that you trust and care about them truly or else you wouldn’t open up to them like you have.

In turn, this will give them the comfort to open up to you.

In doing so, the two of you will develop a real friendship that can last a lifetime.

7. Honesty is a loving thing to do

When you care about someone, you want them to succeed and be happy.

Sometimes, this may place you in a position of disagreement with them, especially towards a decision that could very well be self-destructive.

At this point, being honest and trying to talk your friend out of a bad decision is a loving thing to do.

It shows that you care about them and want to see them succeed instead of fall apart.

Most people get a kick out of watching someone self-destruct because it appears to be entertaining.

But, not you.

Because you’re a good and loving friend!

8. Being honest can save a friendship

Being honest doesn’t only refer to interventions and revelations. It can also refer to the simple truth of expressing your feelings for a friend.

Sometimes, friendships suffer when people drift apart or get busy with the demands of life.

But, letting your friend know that you miss them and actually want to see them can save a friendship.

You never know when your friend could have been feeling ignored or like you don’t care about them because you haven’t made time to see them.

At this point, honesty could be the saving grace for your friendship.

In conclusion

If you can find and develop a friendship that prioritizes a two-way flow of honesty, I’m willing to bet that it will be a friendship that lasts for a lifetime.

It takes a lot of effort but you can have an honest friendship with people.

What’s important is to find good-natured individuals who value honesty above most things. Also, become the kind of friend you want to find in others.

To put it differently, be an honest person and it will help you to attract honest people.

Even if you haven’t been honest before, now is a great time to start.

It’s never too late to become a better person and an honest friend.

With that being said, we have reached the end of this discussion on the importance of honesty in a friendship. If you have any thoughts or questions, please head over to the comment section below and let me know.

Why Honesty Is Important In a Friendship

Introduction.

Friendship is a connection between two or more people who share common views and who find each other’s company rewarding. It is a mutually beneficial union that is cultivated through trust and which becomes finer and deeper with time. Friendship can sprout even in the most unlikely of situations, and between the most unlikely individuals. One of the key aspects that strengthen friendship is honesty, a feature that this paper centers on and expounds upon.

Friendship involves friends making commitments to each other. It entails two people, whether strangers or acquaintances, developing a ‘liking’ for one another. It is often said that unless friendship is inculcated in families, the family members cannot stick together. Cousins, brothers, and sisters must put in extra effort to inculcate friendship for their family ties to grow strong. Apart from trusting one another, friends need to be open, sincere, and honest to one another.

Honesty must exist for friendship to thrive. A friend who is transparent and hides nothing is a good friend. He has a good motive and can take the friendship to a higher level. If one party in a friendship discovers that the other has cheated him, or is hiding vital information, that would likely mark the beginning of the collapse of the companionship. Cheating a friend implies that one is not interested in his or her mutual wellbeing and is not the best way to handle a person who is supposed to be a confidant. A friend is someone whom you can tell anything, you can share any and every piece of information in your life. A friend is more than just a brother or sister, he or she represents an important part of one’s life and it makes one complete.

Essay Writing

Human beings are prone to mistakes and failure. However, even where one has made a mistake or put the friendship in jeopardy, showing sincerity and making an effort to restore the relationship can go a long way in maintaining the friendship. If for instance, I realized that my friend has said something against me or has taken an action that could jeopardize our friendship, I’m more likely to forgive him if he came forward and told me the truth. If he is honest, explains his perspective and makes a genuine effort to mend any possible adverse consequences I will find him to be a sincere friend. However, if he makes a grave mistake and still denies, I will likely end the friendship immediately as that would no longer be a friend but an adversary.

It is often easier to end a friendship that it is to forge one. Friendship requires cultivation, commitment and the desire to contribute to the wellbeing of each party. Honesty is thus in the middle of friendship. A friendship not built on trust, honesty, and sincerity is sure to collapse sooner or later. A friend who proves to be indeed only when in need is clearly not one.

Friendship Sample Essay in 200 words

Friendship is something exceptional. Whenever life gets rough, one thing that we can always rely on is our friendship. We know that we have our friends to support us through the tough times in life. Not only that, friendship is such a deep-rooted emotion that even when we don’t share what we are feeling at the same moment, just by looking at our faces, our friends can figure out that something is bothering us. And they, just by having a thoughtful talk with us, have the strength to make all the bothering go away in a snap. Such is the power of friendship. It’s more than meets the eye. However, there are times when we have those life tests that make us reach our limits and test us through thick and thin.

Everything in life isn’t always smooth and happy, there are phases when even friends get into a fight with each other, but when they come out of that situation with their friendship still intact, then that bonding reaches new heights of strength.

If you have deep friendships with people, always be grateful to god for that, because not every bond of friendship lasts forever. Those people who have friends who last a lifetime are truly blessed because friendship truly is beautiful.

The word friendship may have a particular number of alphabets, but the meaning it conveys cannot be measured in numbers. The word “friendship” is more than meets the eye. The depth it holds in terms of emotions, bonding, trust, understanding, support, communication, and much more is unparalleled. At every phase of our lives, we come across people and don’t even realize the bonds that get forged with time. These bonds are filled with the spirit and essence of trust, honesty, support, etc. hence becoming the pillars of friendship.

In every person’s life, friendship plays different roles but one thing that every person can agree on without a doubt is that friendship sustains you. Now, there are basically 2 types of friends, first ones are those who are good friends while the other ones are best friends. The best friends are the ones that we share a special bond of affection and love with. They make our lives much richer and easier

In true friendship, there is no place for judgment. True friends can share anything they are feeling without the fear of being judged by the other. To put it simply, we can say that true friendship gives us a reason to become even stronger in life.

Friendship makes us stronger in all aspects. No matter how much we fight our friends, we always come back to them. This is what teaches us the virtue of understanding and being patient. Without an iota of doubt, we can conclude that there is nothing out there that is nearly as beautiful, and as strong as friendship. Lucky are those who have this blessing in their life. Forever cherish it.

True friendship is one where there is mutual respect, good communication, honesty, and trust. When you know that no matter what, you can rely on your friend and that friend has got your back in every situation.

The full form of “FRIEND” is” Few Relations In Earth Never Die”.

When you have a good friendship topic, essay writing becomes as easy as it gets. We have some for you!

📝 Friendship Essay Structure

🏆 best friendship topic ideas & essay examples, 💡 good essay topics on friendship, 🎓 simple & easy friendship essay titles, 📌 most interesting friendship topics to write about, ❓ research questions about friendship.

Describing a friend, talking about your relationship and life experiences can be quite fun! So, take a look at our topics on friendship in the list below. Our experts have gathered numerous ideas that can be extremely helpful for you. And don’t forget to check our friendship essay examples via the links.

Writing a friendship essay is an excellent way to reflect on your relationships with other people, show your appreciation for your friends, and explore what friendship means to you. What you include in your paper is entirely up to you, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t structure it properly. Here is our advice on structuring an essay on friendship:

  • Begin by selecting the right topic. It should be focused and creative so that you can earn a high mark. Think about what friendship means to you and write down your thoughts. Reflect on your relationship with your best friend and see if you can write an essay that incorporates these themes. If these steps didn’t help – don’t worry! Fortunately, there are many web resources that can help you choose. Browse samples of friendship essays online to see if there are any topics that interest you.
  • Create a title that reflects your focus. Paper titles are important because they grasp the reader’s attention and make them want to read further. However, many people find it challenging to name their work, so you can search for friendship essay titles online if you need to.
  • Once you get the first two steps right, you can start developing the structure of your essay. An outline is a great tool because it presents your ideas in a clear and concise manner and ensures that there are no gaps or irrelevant points. The most basic essay outline has three components: introduction, body, and conclusion. Type these out and move to the next step. Compose an introduction. Your introduction should include a hook, some background information, and a thesis. A friendship essay hook is the first sentence in the introduction, where you draw the reader’s attention. For instance, if you are creating an essay on value of friendship, include a brief description of a situation where your friends helped you or something else that comes to mind. A hook should make the reader want to read the rest of the essay. After the hook, include some background information on your chosen theme and write down a thesis. A thesis statement is the final sentence of the first paragraph that consists of your main argument.
  • Write well-structured body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should start with one key point, which is then developed through examples, references to resources, or other content. Make sure that each of the key points relates to your thesis. It might be useful to write out all of your key points first before you write the main body of the paper. This will help you to see if any of them are irrelevant or need to be swapped to establish a logical sequence. If you are composing an essay on the importance of friendship, each point should show how a good friend can make life better and more enjoyable. End each paragraph with a concluding sentence that links it to the next part of the paper.
  • Finally, compose a conclusion. A friendship essay conclusion should tie together all your points and show how they support your thesis. For this purpose, you should restate your thesis statement at the beginning of the final paragraph. This will offer your reader a nice, well-balanced closure, leaving a good impression of your work.

Friendship is considered as one of the treasures that anyone can possess. God has given us the liberty to choose friends because they are for our lifetime. It is quite normal for our parents and siblings to love us because they are our own blood but a friend is someone who is initially a stranger and then takes his/her place above all the other relations. Friendship is nothing but pure love without any expectations.

Role of a Friend:

True friends share and support each other even during the toughest of times. A true friend is one who feels happy for our success, who feel sad for our failures, fight with us for silly things and hugs us the next second, gets angry on us when we do any mistakes. Friendship is all about having true friends who can understand us without the need for us to speak.

Conclusion:

Friendship is very essential for a happy life. Even a two-minute chat with a friend will make us forget our worries. That is the strength of friendship.

Friendship is a divine relationship, which is defined by neither blood nor any other similarity. The Desire to Belong:

Each one of us have been so programmed that we need a companion even if it’s not romantic, someone just to tag along. There are several definitions of friendship and it is upon you as to how you believe your relation to be. Friendship can happen when you are simply sharing a bowl of food with a person day after day. It can be expressed in the way you silently care for someone even when they may not be aware of your existence.

The Little Moments that Matter:

It is giving up the little things you love dearly for the sake of someone you cherish a great deal. Friendship often refers to the little moments of senseless laugh you two share when the rest of the world starts to look bleak. It is to know what your friend needs and being there for them even when the rest of the world has turned their back towards them.

Friendship is the kind of relation which sometimes even exceeds the realms of love because it is all about giving without even once bothering to sense what you shall get back. Every time spent is special because when you are with friends, you don’t feel the blues!

The Bottom-Line:

Of course the definition of friendship is going to vary a great deal from one person to another. The friendship was invented for trade purposes because when two people with opposite things that depend on each other re put together, trade is maximized.

The second type of friendship is based on pleasure. This is described as friendship in which two individuals are drawn to each other based on desires of pleasure and is characterized by passionate feelings and feelings of belonging. This type of friendship can ether last long or is short-lived depending on the presence of the attraction between the two parties.

The third type of friendship is based on goodness. In this friendship, the goodness of people draw them to each other and they usually have the same virtues. People like this tend to end the friendship once they get what they want or stab their supposed friends in the back just to get what they think is best for them. Friendship is a very good thing that can help meet our need for companionship and other emotional needs.

Friends can both be the good or the bad types. Good friends help push us on the right path in life while on the other hand, bad friends don’t care about us but only care about themselves and can lead us into the wrong path; because of this, we have to be absolutely careful when choosing our friends in this life.

Bad friends can ruin our lives completely so we have to be weary of them and do our best to avoid bag friends totally. We need friends in our life that will be there for us at every point in time and will share all of our feeling with us, both the good and bad. This is the reason behind why it is appropriate to settle on an appropriate decision with regards to making friends.

Genuine friendship is truly a gift delighted in by a couple. The individuals who have it ought to express gratitude toward God for having genuine pearls in their lives and the individuals who don’t have a couple of good friends ought to always take a stab at better approaches to anchor great friends. No organization is superior to having a friend close by in the midst of need. You will stay cheerful in your one-room flat on the off chance that you are surrounded by your friends; then again, you can’t discover satisfaction even in your estate in the event that you are far away from others.

Types of Friends:

There is variety everywhere, so why not in friends. We can see different types of friends during our journey of life. For instance, your best friend at school is someone with whom you just get along the most. That friend, especially in the case of girls, may just get annoyed even if you talk to another of your friend more than her. Such is the childish nature of such friendships that at times it is difficult for others to identify whether you are best friends or competitors.

Then there is another category of your siblings. No matter how much you deny, but your siblings or your elder brother and sisters are those friends of yours who stay on with you for your entire life. You have a different set of friendship with them as you find yourself fighting with them most of the times. However, in times of need, you shall see that they are first ones standing behind you, supporting you.

There is another category of friends called professional friends. You come across such friends only when you grow up and choose a profession for yourself. These friends are usually from the same organisation and prove to be helpful during your settling years. Some of them tend to stay on with you even when you change companies.

Friendship Examples from History:

History has always taught us a lot. Examples of true friendship are not far behind. We have some famous example from history which makes us realise the true value of friendship. The topmost of them are the Krishna and Sudama friendship. We all must have read or heard as to how after becoming a king when Krishna met Sudama, his childhood friend, he treated him with honour even though Sudama was a poor person. It teaches us the friendship need not be between equals. It has to be between likeminded people. Next example is of Karna and Duryodhana, again from the Mahabharat era.

Despite knowing the fact that the Pandavas were his brothers, Karna went on to fight alongside Duryodhan as he is his best friend and even laid down his life for him. What more example of true friendship can one find? Again from the same era, Krishna and Arjun are also referred to as the best of the friends. Bhagavad Gita is an example of how a true friend can guide you towards positivity in life and make you follow the path of Dharma. Similarly, there are numerous examples from history which teach us the values of true friendship and the need to nourish such for own good.

Whether you accept or deny it, a friend plays an important role in your life. In fact, it is very important to have a friend. However, at the same time, it is extremely important to choose the friends wisely as they are the ones who can build you or destroy you. Nonetheless, a friend’s company is something which one enjoys all through life and friends should be treated as the best treasure a man can have.

Why Honesty is Important in Friendship & How To Achieve that?

Honesty Is Important - I appreciate people who are honest in a warmly direct way. There's less hurt, stress and surprise battles to be fought. And more communication, understanding and peace of mind. Karen Salmansohn

Honesty is important when it comes to long-term friendship!

In today’s short read, you’ll learn why and how to cultivate an honesty focused friendship.

Guest post by: Aimee Halpin

I have been told I am good at listening to my friends.

I always “hear” what they don’t say, even if it is just a status update on Facebook.

No matter what, I believe that friends should be able to say what they mean to a true friend even if it hurts just a little.

Also, let me highlight that I am not saying that I don’t get my feelings hurt, because I do, but I do prefer honesty in my life.

And, if your friend has the ability to admit when he/she is wrong, then that’s a plus.

Humility is an important quality to have.

Honesty and Friendship Art:

That being said, please don’t hold a grudge if you haven’t ever told your friend what is wrong in the first place.   As cool as it might be, I don’t have mind-reading abilities…yet 🙂

For those of you wondering if I am talking about anyone in particular, the answer is no, but don’t you think being vague on Facebook is more detrimental than the truth?

We now have the ability to post on Facebook in a roundabout way something that we clearly could have said to the person.

That my friends, is mean and childish.

Using the status posts, the new FB Lives, or anything else like that to talk about a friend is actually worse than gossip .

You are doing your friend a disservice by thinking that telling the world is better than telling him or her.

If you ever start to experience a rough patch with a friend, grab a journal and write down what you are feeling so you can think about what might be going on .

Ask yourself these question :

  • Are you returning calls in a timely manner?
  • Do you have a new job or person in your life that might make your friend feel left out?
  • Any health issues they are not sharing?

I once got over a huge bump in the road with one of my dearest friends, and I’ll never forget the day she told me what was bothering her.

It wasn’t something I had any control over at all, but she had held it in for so long, it was a relief when she got it out.

Just remember, what you don’t say could actually be hurting your friendship, so go ahead and get it out.

Strengthen Your Friendship With This Bracelet:

3 steps to honesty in your friendship:.

  • Figure out why you want to hide the truth. The lie we tell ourselves might make us look better, but are you really helping the situation by hiding things?
  • Sometimes people lie or hide the truth to avoid embarrassment . Again, that has nothing to do with you, but if you pick up on vibes easily, you might wonder why your friend keeps telling you that he or she is “busy” every single time you ask them to do something.
  • We hide the truth because we are jealous or have been comparing ourselves to other people. This was one place that surprised me about a friend years ago.  The good news is, I had finally had enough and after our talk, we have never looked back.  It was time to talk about 30 years of friendship and that was worth more to me than pride.

Importance of Friendship Essay Outline

Introduction.

Thesis: Friendship brings people together in a bond that helps them realize and experience a meaningful life.

Paragraph 1:

A good friend is always available irrespective of the circumstances.

  • A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness.
  • A loyal friend makes one to be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment.
  • A good friend can know one more than one knows themselves.
  • A friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself.

Paragraph 2:

Friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them.

  • Friends give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it.
  • The ugly, the bad, and the good should be endured in friendship.
  • A good friend brings out the best in someone.
  • A person in friendship expects their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness.

Paragraph 3:

Friendship can be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person.

  • Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family.
  • One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them.
  • One may get from their friends that which they do not get from their family.
  • A true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life.

Paragraph 4:

“A friend in need is a friend in deed” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship.

  • It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need.
  • I fully understood the meaning of this saying when a classmate friend of mine once handed in my takeaway assignment in my absence.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they love and care for each other.

A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness. Even at that moment when everyone decides to walk away from a person for whatever reason(s), their true friend would walk in and be with them and support them. With a loyal friend, one can be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment because they know the friend fully understands them. A good friend can as a matter of fact know one more than one knows themselves. In addition, a friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself. If one is on a wrong path, the friend would tell them as soon as they notice it.

Additionally, friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them. They give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it. In a friendship, there should be expected to be the ugly, the bad, and the good, all of which should be endured. A good friend brings out the best in someone by encouraging them and prevailing upon them to make the best out of their abilities and strengths. Just like in a business partnership, a person in friendship would expect their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness. This is why it could be true to say that life is partly what one makes it and partly what the friends they choose make it.

Friendship can also be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person. Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family. One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them. In such a case, they would get from their friends that which they do not get from their family. However, in the best case scenario, friendship can also develop between or among family members. Normally, a true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life. One should consider a good friend of theirs as their greatest relation because just one loyal friend is more than a thousand relatives.

“ A friend in need is a friend in deed ” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship. It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need. I never really gave much weight to this saying until I once had to rely on a friend and classmate for an important favor. I had missed school due to an unavoidable circumstance on a day everyone in the class was to hand in their final takeaway assignment in print format. I tried calling people I had thought were my friends among my classmates but none was willing to help. When I was just about to give up, Jasmine, a classmate who was not so close a friend, called and asked me to email her my assignment. I later learnt she downloaded the assignment, printed it, and handed it in together with hers. From then, I am careful about people I treat as friends.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they not only love each other but care for them too. It is akin to striking a partnership in which one partner is always there for the other partner in his or her absence. Friends broaden each other’s horizon by opening new doors for each other. They seek to soar beyond limits as a single determined force. Indeed, friendship guarantees one a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Why honesty in relationships is non-negotiable & 7 rules to follow.

Kelly Gonsalves

Honesty is one of those things we intuitively know is a good thing, but we can really stumble a lot in trying to actually put it into practice.

But when it comes to our relationships, having open and honest communication is necessary to creating a healthy, sustainable partnership.

Here’s why honesty in relationships is so important.

What do we mean by honesty in a relationship?

Honesty is the quality of always speaking the truth and being totally authentic, straightforward, and transparent in our words and actions.

It involves a few key practices: never lying, never hiding the truth, and never purposefully omitting or misdirecting people from the truth.

Honesty in a relationship means always telling your partner the truth and being totally open with them, both for the big things and the little things.

If you’re avoiding talking to your partner about something—such as things that are bothering you in the relationship, something you did that you know your partner will be upset about, or how you really feel about the things you talk about together—then you aren’t being honest.

Being honest means being your true self around your partner, never hiding who you are, what you think, or how you feel.

Why honesty is so important in a relationship

Honesty is the foundation for trust in a relationship, and trust is necessary for a relationship to function and thrive.

When you’re always honest with someone, it tells them that they can trust you and the things you say. It helps them know they can believe your promises and commitments.

“Relationships are built on trust, so honesty is very important in a relationship,” relationship and well-being coach Shula Melamed, M.A., MPH , tells mbg. “We depend on our partner being our port in the storm, a person who we can trust with our thoughts, feelings, and heart.”

Being honest with your partner also facilitates healthy communication , which is also necessary for a functional relationship.

Couples need to be able to talk to each openly and be real with each other; that’s what true connection is all about.

That commitment to being honest also means that both people will be proactive about addressing any tension, conflicts, or issues in the relationship, bringing them up to their partner for discussion.

“Relationships flourish when partners trust each other to be honest and open to resolving conflict,” relationship counselor Margaret Paul, Ph.D. , has told mbg . “On the other hand, relationships flounder when trust is broken.”

Is honesty always the best policy?

Yes, honesty is always necessary in a relationship 100% of the time.

“Each lie that your partner catches you in dilutes your bond, turning you from teammates to opponents in an invisible conflict where your word is never taken seriously,” Melamed explains. “That being said, no need to be brutal when delivering your opinion or answering questions honestly that you know might hurt.”

For example, if your partner just cooked you the worst meal you’ve ever had in your life and asks you what you think of the food, you should be honest—don’t say you love it when you don’t.

But Melamed recommends avoiding unnecessarily hurtful statements (i.e. “you're a terrible cook”) and springing for kinder ways to convey the same sentiment: “Hmm. I so appreciate that you made dinner tonight. Does it taste a little bitter to you though?” Or, “It’s a little bitter tasting to me, so I think there’s some room for improvement. But you clearly put a lot of effort into this, and I so appreciate it when you make dinner.”

Secrets vs. privacy

Sometimes couples can get a little wrapped up in trying to make sure they know absolutely everything about each other.

For example, someone might insist on sharing an email address or knowing exactly where their partner is at all times, or they might feel entitled to tell their partner how hot they think various celebrities are, even if the comments hurt their partner’s feelings.

“Clearly, there are times when sharing too much could actually be hurting your independence and sense of self—or worse, hurting your partner,” marriage therapist Linda Carroll, LMFT , has told mbg . “It is essential to understand the difference between secrets and privacy. Think of it this way: Privacy is a boundary around one's own thoughts, ideas, and past experiences that don't directly involve one's partner. A secret is something that is misleading in some way and intentionally kept hidden from them for fear of judgment or reprisal.”

Partners don’t need to tell each other absolutely everything in order to be considered honest, but they do need to be transparent about information that’s going to directly affect each other’s well-being.

A good rule of thumb is that if you’re actively avoiding telling your partner something because you’re worried about their reaction, you’re keeping a secret and intentionally being dishonest.

And if your partner asks you something directly, you do need to tell the truth.

How to build more trust and honesty in a relationship

Be consistent.

Do the things you say you’re going to do, and be someone your partner can rely on. Building trust happens through actions, not just words, says Melamed: “Show up when you say you will. Do the things you promise. Nothing erodes trust and builds resentment quite like empty or broken promises .”

Don’t commit to things you can’t do

“People think they should say they can make it and show up for another person when they can't because they don't want to disappoint,” Melamed says. “Better to be honest now and disappoint a little in the moment than disappoint later and errode trust.”

Prioritize communication

Make communicating with each other an open priority in your relationship. Have a conversation and agree that you’ll both be open with each other about how you’re feeling, what you need, what’s working, and what’s not. By establishing this precedent, you make honesty easier to practice for both of you.

Lead by example

Is your partner closed off or isn’t always honest about how they feel? Getting a closed-off person to open up takes patience, not pushiness. A great way to help them feel comfortable being honest is to simply lead by example.

Tell them how you’re feeling or what you’re up to, and allow them to follow your lead. When your partner sees that you’re always being real with them, they’ll feel like it’s safe for them to be real with you.

Avoid judging each other for the things you say

If someone is honest with their partner about how they feel and then gets shut down or yelled at for what they say, they’re less likely to want to be honest in the future. So when someone is being honest and vulnerable, avoid judging them or punishing them for it. That means avoiding calling what they said “stupid” or immediately telling them why they’re wrong to feel the way they do. You want to create a space where people feel safe expressing themselves; this is what breeds honesty.

If someone expresses something that hurts you, tell them you appreciate their honesty and then discuss why you’re feeling hurt. Was there another way they could’ve told you that would’ve hurt less? Let them know. If someone said something that you really wish they hadn’t said, you can let them know that that’s information you would prefer not to hear from them. Just remember that your partner should be able to tell you difficult things; that’s part of being in a relationship.

Address the breaches

“When trust has been broken in your relationship, both partners need to direct real therapeutic attention to the relationship to rebuild it,” Paul says. “The betrayal is an opportunity for each person to look within and heal their part of the relationship-system in order to understand why it resulted in broken trust.”

Healing broken trust takes time and real, dedicated work. You both need to be involved and collaborating on how to rebuild that trust . “Don't kid yourself into thinking that you can repair broken trust with a quick statement of forgiveness and a warm embrace,” Paul adds. “The underlying causes for betrayal need to be identified, examined, and worked on in order for betrayal not to resurface again.”

Give it time

Trust takes time. It’s hard to just force yourself to trust someone when you truly aren’t there yet. Work on finding ways to feel safe and secure in your relationship. Committing again and again to being totally honest with each other will be an important first step.

The takeaway

Telling your partner the truth can sometimes be difficult, but it's the foundation for trust in a healthy relationship .

If you or someone you know is struggling with telling the truth, these seven tips above can help build more honesty and trust in a relationship.
