Do you meet the requirements of a new position in your company? Take the leap and use a template for a cover letter to explain why you’re perfect for the role.

How to use a cover letter template

Choose a cover letter template that highlights your unique qualities..

A cover letter is an extension of your resume. It’s your chance to present yourself to the employer and explain how your skills and experience suit the job. Your cover letter design template should answer four significant points:

  • Why you want the job
  • How you’re prepared to handle the daily requirements of the job
  • How you can fit in and adapt to the company’s culture
  • How you can help the company move forward

Show your passion and interest in the company.

Use our professional cover letter templates to explain what inspires you about your potential employer. It could be the company’s mission, a new initiative, or how you can contribute to its long-term goals. Show the hiring manager you’ve already invested time researching the company; they’ll be more likely to invest in you.

Match your skills and experiences to the job’s requirements with a suitable cover letter template.

Respond directly to duties and  skills  listed in the job description, and show your capabilities in those areas through concrete examples from your own experience and training. You can also point out a challenge the company is currently facing and how you can help solve it, similar to what our cover letter templates showcase.

Encourage the hiring manager to learn more about you.

Your cover letter should incentivize hiring managers to read your resume and follow up for an interview. Be forthright. Direct the reader to examine your resume for more details on your relevant skills and accomplishments. Conclude by expressing your readiness to meet and discuss how you can contribute. If you’re unsure how to do this, you can personalize one of our cover letter templates in our Cover Letter Builder to access professionally written content suggestions tailored to your job title.

Avoid repeating information from your resume.

While your resume and cover letter template must be similar, they shouldn’t reiterate the same information.  Review your resume  and note what you want to explain further in your cover letter; it could be a set of skills, a work achievement relevant to the job you’re applying for, or a project you know will help you stand out. A free downloadable cover letter template from this page will help you tell your story to get noticed.

Tailor your cover letter template to the job.

Whether a resume or cover letter,  tailoring your document  to the job is critical. This includes using keywords from the job description in your writing, using a tone of voice that reflects the company culture and addressing the letter to the hiring manager and not “To whom it may concern.” A cover letter Word template or Apple Pages cover letter template is easy to customize.

Match your resume and cover letter template

Matching your cover letter and resume template helps you craft a polished and cohesive job application. After all, cover letters and resumes are strong when they both read and look their best. We have all the tools and guides you need to build the perfect resume to complement your cover letter.

Cover letter template FAQ

A cover letter is a one-page document you submit alongside your resume or  CV . Its purpose is to support the content of your resume or CV by expanding on your achievements, showcasing your personality and explaining why you’re a great fit for the company.

Even though a cover letter has a supporting role in the application process, it’s no less critical and could decide whether you get hired. Check out these  cover letter basics  and our  cover letter writing tips  to get hired fast.

Yes. A recent survey found that 83% of hiring managers, recruiters and HR staff consider cover letters essential to decision-making. We always recommend writing a cover letter because:

  • It allows you to provide information that isn’t in your resume.
  • It gives hiring managers and recruiters a glimpse into your personality.
  • It has the space you need to market yourself as the best candidate.

Choose a cover letter layout template from this page to increase your chances of getting the job. Look at the  five qualities of every successful cover letter  to learn more.

You can write a cover letter for your resume in just 15 minutes — and we’re here to help you.

A successful cover letter should be formatted neatly for easy reading, and the content should catch hiring managers’ attention. To achieve the first goal, use a cover letter sample template as a model, and keep your letter to the point and one page long.

To ensure your content fits the bill, consult the job description and pinpoint essential  keywords  that you should mention in your letter. For example, if you’re applying to a customer service position that stresses knowledge of customer relations management (CRM) systems, mention your experience with CRM in your cover letter.

Doing so will also help your letter pass automated  applicant tracking systems  (ATS), which many employers use to scan cover letters for the right keywords. Using an  AI cover letter generator  can help you tailor your cover letter to your target job with keywords and industry-specific content.

Finally, your cover letter should answer the most critical question: Why are you interested in the job and the company? Explain  why you should be hired for the role  and what makes you the best fit. Employers will be impressed by a cover letter that shows you’ve done your homework and thought about how you can contribute. Download a free professional cover letter template and get started today!

A cover letter is a blank canvas where you can formally introduce yourself to the hiring manager — think of it as your sales pitch. Generally speaking, the hiring manager wants to know more about your skills and background, why you want to work for them and how you will help them. Still, this approach may differ depending on your professional experience.

For example, hiring managers will want to know why you have a career gap in your resume if you have one. If you ventured into running a small business or were affected by COVID-19, you’d want to explain what happened and show how your past experiences will help you fill this new role, as our professional cover letter templates show.

We recommend checking out our guide on what to include in a cover letter for tips from career advice experts.

Using a cover letter builder is not just OK but encouraged! Our Cover Letter Builder makes the writing process a breeze by providing over 15 cover letter templates, expert suggestions, step-by-step guidance, and customization tools to create and save as many versions of your cover letter as you want.

It’s the easiest way to assemble a professional cover letter for your resume, and all you have to do to get started is choose the downloadable cover letter template that best works for you.

A cover letter should be one page long. This  cover letter length  allows you to detail key achievements without overwhelming the reader. The recruiter or hiring manager won’t spend that much time reviewing your application, so your writing must be concise and straightforward. A work cover letter template from this page can help you organize your cover letter on one page.

If you don’t know who to address your cover letter to, here are some options to try:

  • Address the cover letter to the department you’re interested in joining. For example, “Dear Creative Department,” “Dear Accounting Department,” or “Dear [Company] Team.”
  • If you have the hiring manager’s name but are unsure whether to use titles like Mr., Mrs., or Ms., you can leave it out and use their full name. For example, “Dear John Smith” or “Dear Helena Law.”

Avoid starting your cover letter with greetings such as “To whom it may concern” or “Dear sir or madam” — it’s old-fashioned. This page’s cover letter samples can point you in the right direction.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Choosing a Microsoft Word Cover Letter Template

Now that you’ve seen so many great free cover letter templates for Word, you’re probably rearing to download one, fill it out, and send it. But before you do so, please answer these questions:

  • Are you sure that you can accurately judge cover letter templates? In other words, can you identify if it really is a professionally designed cover letter template that matches both your personal brand AND the culture of your dream company?
  • Do you know exactly what to include in a cover letter ?
  • Do you have a matching resume template on hand?

If you’re a seasoned job-seeker, the first question won’t pose a major challenge: you’ve already developed a gut feeling that tells you if a random letter template you found online will work for you. But if you’re new to the job market and to the world of business letters in general, you might have a hard time estimating the visual impact of different letter templates, especially the more unusual ones.

Now let’s move on to the second question. If you’re not experienced in writing cover letters, it’s very easy to commit one or more cover letter mistakes —and get rejected as a result. Even the most professional-looking template won’t hide any potential weaknesses in the content of your cover letter. To remedy it, we recommend reading our foolproof cover letter writing guide .

Last but not least: don’t forget your resume! Ideally, your resume and your cover letter should have a matching design. But when browsing through cover letter templates for Word, you may notice that not all template designers offer matching resume templates.

This is why we recommend a safe option of going with a dedicated resume and cover letter builder—all the templates are designed with maximal versatility in mind so that you can use them to apply for any job. And it comes with helpful writing prompts you can use to speed up the process of writing your cover letter. You also won’t need to worry about formatting your cover letter . Our builder takes care of it for you.

And what cover letter templates can you expect to see? Here are just five out of all of our templates.

Expert Hint: Wait—do you even need a cover letter ? Well, almost half of all employers will skip job applications without them!

60+ Cover Letter Examples in 2024 [For All Professions]

Background Image

No matter where you are in your career, or what job you’re applying for, submitting a cover letter with your resume is a must .

Done right, a cover letter will effectively complement your resume and explain to the hiring manager in more detail why you’re the right person for the job.

What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is a one-page document that you submit as part of your job application, alongside your resume .

Its purpose is to introduce you and briefly summarize your professional background. On average, your cover letter should be from 250 to 400 words long .

A good cover letter can give the hiring manager more insight into what makes you a good candidate and help them make up their mind about whether they should invite you for an interview. A bad cover letter, though, will get ignored (at best) and lose you the job (at worst).

So, to make sure this doesn’t happen, it’s essential to know how to write a convincing cover letter.

The first thing to remember is that a cover letter is a supplement to your resume, not a replacement. Meaning, you shouldn’t just repeat whatever is mentioned in your resume and call it a day.

Optimally, you should use your cover letter to shed more light on your skills and qualifications, as well as explain anything you didn’t have space for in your resume (e.g. a career gap or why you’re changing careers).

If you’re writing a cover letter for the first time, though, putting all this together might seem pretty tough.

Fortunately, you can follow our tried-and-tested format to make the experience much easier:

  • Header - Input your contact information.
  • Greeting the hiring manager - Open the cover letter with a “Dear Sir or Madam,” or use the hiring manager’s name if you know what that is.
  • Opening paragraph - Grab the hiring manager’s attention by getting straight to the point. Mention what your professional experiences are, and what role you’re applying for.
  • The second paragraph - Explain why you’re the perfect candidate for the job. Mention your top 2-3 achievements, your top skills, why you want to work in that specific industry, and whatever else is relevant.
  • The third paragraph - End your cover letter with a call to action. E.g. “I would love to meet personally and discuss how I can help Company X.”
  • Formal closing - Something like this: “Thank you for your consideration. Best, John Doe.”

Here’s what this looks like in practice:

9 Tips to Write a Cover Letter (the Right Way)

Now that we've covered the basics, let's talk about cover letter tips . Below, we'll give you all the knowledge you need to take your cover letter from "OK" to "great."

#1. Pick the right template

A good cover letter is all about leaving the right first impression.

And what’s a better way to leave a good impression than through a professional, well-formatted, and visual template?

You can simply pick one of our tried-and-tested cover letter templates and you’ll be all set!

cover letter examples templates

#2. Add your contact details on the header

The best way to start your cover letter is through a header.

Here’s what you want to include there:

  • Phone Number
  • Name of the hiring manager / their professional title
  • Name of the company you’re applying to

Optionally, you can also include the following:

  • Social Media Profiles - Any type of profile that’s relevant to your field. Social Profiles on websites like LinkedIn, GitHub (for developers), Medium (for writers), etc.
  • Personal Website - If you have a personal website that somehow adds value to your application, you can mention it. Let’s say you’re a professional writer. In that case, you’d want to link to your content portfolio site or blog.

#3. Greet the hiring manager the right way

Once you’ve listed all your relevant contact information, it’s time to address the hiring manager reading your cover letter.

A good practice here is to find the hiring manager’s name and address them directly instead of using the traditional “dear sir or madam.” This shows that you’re really invested in the company and that you took your time to do some research about the job.

So, how can you find out the hiring manager’s name?

One way to do this is by looking up the head of the company’s relevant department on LinkedIn. Let’s say you’re applying for the position of Communication Specialist at Novoresume. The hiring manager is probably the Head of Communications or the Chief Communications Office.

Or let’s say you’re applying for the position of server at a restaurant. In that case, you’d be looking to find out who the restaurant manager is.

If this doesn’t work, you can also check out the “Team” page on the company website; there’s a good chance you’ll at least find the right person there.

If you still can’t find out the hiring manager’s name, here are several other greetings you can use:

  • Dear [Department] Hiring Manager
  • Dear Hiring Manager
  • To whom it may concern
  • Dear [Department] Team

#4. Create an attention-grabbing introduction

Recruiters get hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of applications. Chances are, they’re not going to be reading every single cover letter end-to-end.

So, it’s essential to catch their attention from the very first paragraph.

The problem with most cover letter opening paragraphs, though, is that they’re usually extremely generic, often looking something like this:

Hey, my name is Jonathan and I’d like to work as a Sales Manager at XYZ Inc. I’ve worked as a sales manager at MadeUpCompany Inc. for 5+ years, so I believe that I’d be a good fit for the position.

As you can probably tell, this opening paragraph doesn’t tell the hiring manager anything other than that you’ve worked the job before - and that’s not really helpful in setting you apart from other candidates.

What you want to do, instead, is start off with 2-3 of your top achievements to really grab the reader’s attention. Preferably, the achievements should be as relevant as possible to the position.

For example:

My name’s Michael and I’d like to help XYZ Inc. hit and exceed its sales goals as a Sales Manager. I’ve worked with Company X, a fin-tech company, for 3+ years. As a Sales Representative, I generated an average of $30,000+ in sales per month (beating the KPIs by around 40%). I believe that my previous industry experience, as well as my excellence in sales, makes me the right candidate for the role of X at Company Y.

The second example shows how the candidate is a top performer. The first just shows that they’ve worked a sales job before.

Which one are YOU more likely to invite for an interview?

#5. Show you’re the perfect person for the job

One great thing about cover letters is that they allow you to expand more on the top achievements from your resume and really show the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job.

A good way to do that is to first read the job ad and really understand what skills/experiences are required, and then to ensure that your cover letter touches upon the said skills or experiences.

In my previous role as a Facebook Marketing Expert at XYZ Inc. I handled customer acquisition through ads, managing a monthly Facebook ad budget of $20,000+. As the sole digital marketer at the company, I managed the ad creation and management process end-to-end. This means I created the ad copy and images, as well as picked the targeting, ran optimization trials, and so on.

Other than Facebook advertising, I’ve also delved into other online PPC channels, including:

  • Google Search

#6. Explain why you’re a great company fit

The HR manager doesn’t only look at whether you’ll be good at the job or not. They’re looking for someone that’s also a good fit for the company culture.

After all, employees that don’t fit in are bound to quit, sooner or later. This ends up costing the company a ton of money, up to 50% of the employee’s annual salary .

To convince the hiring manager that you’re a great company fit, do some research on the company and find out what it is you like about them, or about working there. You want to know things like:

  • What’s the company’s business model?
  • What’s the company's product or service? Have you used it?
  • What’s the culture like? Will someone micro-manage your work, or will you have autonomy on how you get things done?

Then, turn your top reasons for liking to work there into text and add them to your cover letter!

#7. Wrap up with a call to action

To make the end of your cover letter as memorable as possible, you want to:

  • Wrap up any points you couldn't in the previous paragraphs. Mention anything you’ve left out that you think could help the hiring manager make up your mind.
  • Thank the hiring manager for their time. After all, it never hurts to be polite.
  • Finish the cover letter with a call to action. A call to action is a great way to make your cover letter ending as memorable as possible.

#8. Write a formal closing

Once you’re done with the final paragraph, all you have to do is write down a formal “goodbye” and you’re good to go.

Feel free to use one of the most popular conclusions in a cover letter:

  • Best Regards,
  • Kind Regards,

#9. Proofread your cover letter

Last but not least, make sure to always proofread each and every document that you’ll be including in your job application - cover letter included.

The last thing you want is to be claiming you’re a great candidate for the job with a cover letter full of typos!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you still have some questions about cover letters? Check out the answers below:

1. How do I write a simple cover letter?

To write a cover letter that’s simple but also professional, make sure to include a header with your personal information, a formal greeting to the hiring manager, an attention-grabbing opening paragraph, a second paragraph explaining why you’re a good candidate for the job, and a formal closing (preferably with a call to action).

2. What are the 3 parts of a cover letter?

The three parts of a cover letter are:

  • The introduction , namely the header, the greeting to the hiring manager, and the opening paragraph.
  • The sales pitch is usually the body of the cover letter.
  • The conclusion involves a formal closing and a signature line.

3. What makes a great cover letter?

A great cover letter should be personalized for each job you’re applying for, instead of being overly generic. It’s also preferable to address the hiring manager by their name and not use the overly-used “Dear Sir/Madam.”

To make a great first impression, you should mention 1-2 of your top achievements in your opening paragraph - the more job-specific they are, the better. Also, don’t stop at showing the hiring manager why you’re a great candidate for the job. Make sure to also talk about how you’re a good culture fit for the company.

Last but not least, wrap up your closing paragraph with a call to action to give the hiring manager a little extra something to remember you by.

4. When is a cover letter necessary?

Unless the job ad specifically states otherwise, you should always include a cover letter with your job application .

Even if the hiring manager doesn’t read it, you will look more professional simply by including one.

And that’s a wrap! We hope our cover letter examples and writing tips will inspire you to write a cover letter that will land you your next job.

Using words, you should paint a picture of the future impact you could have in the company and articulate how your past experience could help the company hit its goals.

Which template is best for a cover letter?

The choice of a cover letter template depends on your industry. If you’re applying to a more traditional company, opt for a minimalistic cover letter template in black and white or gray scale. If you’re after a job in a more hyp, startup-like company, consider a more creative template, perhaps one featuring a photo or a professional tagline on top.

What does a modern cover letter look like?

A modern cover letter is a one-page, web-friendly document, most times in PDF format. Use an appropriate professional greeting (hello, hi) and the person’s or company name, instead of the old-fashioned “dear Sir/Madam” or the trite “To whom it may concern”. Modern cover letters are also more permissive in terms of design. You can use color (as long as it doesn’t affect readability) and include a headshot and professional tagline in the header area for  personal branding purposes.

Attention-grabber ought to be its middle name.

How to Get a Cover Letter Template on Microsoft Word?

There are two options:

1. Use Microsoft Word on Your Hard Drive

If you have a copy of Microsoft Word on your hard drive, all you really have to do is download your Word cover letter template of choice, double-click on the file, and start editing. (Oh, you may have to unzip a file or two along the way.)

This option is not entirely free because you need to either have an Office 365 subscription or own an older version of MS Word.

2. Use Microsoft Word Online for Free

You don’t have an Office 365 subscription, but you’d still like to use Microsoft Word and one of the Word cover letter templates from our list.

Here’s the good news:

It’s doable, 100% free, and legal. But—

It’s not the most effective method. (More on that below.)

This is how to edit a cover letter template in Word Online

  • Create a free Microsoft account here .
  • If you already a Microsoft account, sign in here.
  • To start using Word Online, just click on the app launcher icon in the top left corner and select Word.

You can select one of the basic Word cover letter templates available straight from Word Online, and start editing right away.

You can download one of the best Word cover letter templates from our list.

And this is where the fun begins, because—

Word Online doesn’t support the .dotx file format, which is the standard for Word cover letter templates.

So, this is what you need to do:

  • Convert the .dotx into .docx. Use a free online file converter. Like this one , for example.
  • Upload the converted file to your One Drive. A simple drag and drop will do the job!
  • Open the file and start editing.

But beware!

The converted files tend to be truly... unruly.

Here are some issues I came across:

  • Some Word cover letter templates aren’t fully editable. (Sooo, frustrating!)
  • The formatting looks a bit off in some documents. But—comes back to normal when you export the file to PDF. (All this is quite confusing, really.)
  • The editing process tended to be veeeeeery time-consuming. (I spent more time trying to figure things out than doing anything meaningful.)

So, how about giving our resume builder a try? It will save you tons of time, and you’ll have your resume and matching cover letter ready in a flash!

Here’s a sample cover letter and resume template available in our builder:

Plus, a great cover letter that matches your resume will give you an advantage over other candidates. You can write it in our cover letter builder here.  Here's what it may look like:

And remember:

Even though a Word cover template may look impressive, it still needs something more than lorem ipsum .

Cover letter writing FAQ

Want to skip the reading and finish your cover letter in 15 minutes?

We also offer an incredible tool, our Cover Letter Builder ! It automates the writing process into a series of easy-to-answer prompts.

A cover letter is a one-page document sent alongside a resume or CV that summarizes your professional experience and explains why you’re an excellent fit for the job.

It consists of contact details, a greeting, three to four paragraphs and a formal signature.

Your cover letter should:

  • Include two to three examples of your top achievements.
  • Tell a story of your skill level and career path.
  • Explain why you’re a good fit for the role and company.
  • Include any relevant details you can’t fit in your resume or CV.

A great cover letter can pique a hiring manager’s interest. 83% of recruiters will interview candidates with great cover letters! If you’re serious about a job, include one.

Here, we’ll break down the process of how to write a cover letter for a resume in six easy steps.

Pick a cover letter template

Cover letter templates are a great tool to jump in and start writing! Templates save you time and effort because the formatting and design of your cover letter are already in place.

Find a template design you like, and just plug in your information!

Professional graphic designers create our cover letter templates to look sharp and modern. Best of all, they’re designed to pass applicant tracking systems (ATS), which most companies use to scan your cover letter for keywords .

Write a professional header

Your cover letter’s header should include:

  • Location (city and state)
  • Phone number
  • The date of when you plan to send the letter
  • Name and job title of the hiring manager
  • Name and address of the company you’re applying to
  • Your current job title (optional)
  • Your LinkedIn page (optional)
  • Links to your professional social media accounts (optional)

Greet the hiring manager

Addressing the hiring manager by name is a great way to show professionalism and attention to detail.

Avoid addressing the recipient with “Dear Sir or Madam,” which is outdated and impersonal.

It’s always best to address them by their title and name. For example:

Good cover letter greeting examples:

“Dear hiring manager,”

“Dear [XYZ Company] team,”

“Dear Customer Acquisition Hiring Manager,”

Weak cover letter greeting examples:

“To whom it may concern,”

“Dear sir,”

“Dear madam,”

Write a compelling opening paragraph

Your opening paragraph should concisely state who you are and your interest in the position in no more than one or two sentences.

If a current employee at the company has referred you, you should mention it immediately in the opening paragraph. This way, the hiring manager will pay more attention to the accomplishments stated in your letter.

A few key elements that should appear in your opening paragraph are your:

  • Profession/current job title.
  • Desired position.
  • Motivation for applying.

Compare these cover letter opening paragraph examples:

Good example of a cover letter opening paragraph

“After seven years working in marketing as a brand manager in multinational companies like P&G and Unilever, I want to use my negotiation and extensive knowledge of retail operations to expand your company’s market as a sales representative.”

Why this cover letter opening works:

In just one sentence, this applicant informs a potential employer of their years of experience, area of expertise, the role they wish to pursue and the skills to back up their career aspirations.

Weak example of a cover letter opening paragraph

“Hello. I am Lester Peterson. I hope you are doing well. I am writing to you because I want to apply to your company. I am a determined professional with all the qualities needed to excel in this role.”

Why this cover letter opening doesn’t work:

This opener sounds informal, and instead of showing examples of his qualifications, the applicant opts for empty statements that need more convincing detail.

Prove your value in the body paragraphs

Your cover letter’s body consists of one or two paragraphs where you offer more context to your career accomplishments .

Because the cover letter is a companion to your resume, you should mix up the language and descriptions you use. Expand instead of repeat!

Try to spin the details of your resume into a story. Narrate the challenges and opportunities during your career that led you to accomplish, for instance, an increase in sales, gaining a valuable client or leading a big project.

Check out these cover letter body paragraph examples for different approaches you could take depending on your unique situation:

Body paragraph example focused on career accomplishments

“In my previous teaching role, I carved out 10-minute slots in my senior class to do SAT prep testing, resulting in having the district’s highest SAT score average in English. My dedication to my student’s needs has always been my priority, and students responded with increased participation in the portion of the class allotted for the syllabus topics. After being named Teacher of the Year, I organized a continuing education and mentorship program for newly graduated teachers in the school district.”

Body paragraph example focused on skill set

“Throughout my career as an accountant, I have acquired skills in various areas of accounting and finance. In my first years, I worked in the public sector, developing budgets between $50,000 and $2 million and ensuring accounting records complied with federal and state regulations. Eventually, I moved to work in private equity firms. I gained firsthand experience in financial analysis in tech investments and monitoring funds’ investments, preparing all financial statements and presenting to investors and stakeholders.”

Body paragraph example focused on career goals

“After graduating from Columbia School of Social Work and volunteering in various non-profit organizations focused on at-risk youth and women’s shelters, I’m eager to put my skills to work as a counselor in the court system. My understanding of vulnerable children’s needs and challenges has inspired me to continue my career supporting children through their caregivers’ or their court proceedings.”

If you find your body paragraph is becoming too long, use bullet points to break up blocks of text.

Body paragraph example with bullet points:

“In my current role as sales lead, I’ve attracted several local businesses in various industries and brought financial gains to our company and clients. Notable achievements in this capacity include:

  • Adding 14 new accounts to our portfolio.
  • Improving client retention rate by 47% over four years.
  • Negotiating and renewing longer contracts with current clients, increasing net revenue by 11%.”

If you want your cover letter to impress a hiring manager, your body paragraph must be full of job-relevant skills and achievements — and written like a pro.

Our Cover Letter Builder will suggest over a dozen body paragraph examples you can choose from to wow employers.

You can edit these content suggestions with quantifiable achievements and keywords from the job ad to make your cover letter unforgettable.

Make my cover letter now

Write a closing paragraph with a call to action.

Your closing statement should be concise and direct, leaving the reader excited to learn more about you.

Make sure your closer is:

  • One or two sentences long.
  • Direct about your eagerness to fill the role.
  • Encouraging the reader to set up an interview.
  • Polite and thankful.

Good example of a cover letter closer

“Let’s discuss my plans to contribute to XYZ Company’s mission to impact women professionals in their search for investment opportunities and financial education resources as Head of Marketing Operations. Thanks for your time in reading my application.”

Why this cover letter closing works:

This closer proves the candidate wants to have a serious discussion with a manager by getting specific. It offers both value and respect to the hiring manager.

Weak example of a cover letter closer

“All in all, you won’t likely find a better candidate than me. My qualifications and experience will knock it out of the park. Let me know when you can meet with me for an interview.”

Why this is a weak cover letter closer

Although supremely confident, this statement lacks substance, and the tone is off-putting. It’s demanding instead of polite and friendly.

Sign off and mention any enclosures

Your cover letter’s sign-off consists of two words at most. Plenty of signatures will make you sound like a pro, and others you should avoid.

Good cover letter sign-offs

Keep it formal and professional with these signature lines:

Most sincerely,

Best regards,

Kind regards,

Thank you for your consideration,

Respectfully,

Bad cover letter sign-offs

Avoid informal phrases you would use with friends:

Take it easy,

Have a great day,

Yours truly,

Warm wishes,

Affectionately,

Thx, or any other abbreviation

If you need to include additional documents beyond your resume –– like a portfolio of your work or letter of recommendation –– add a double space below your signature at the end of the cover letter. Then write “Enclosure:” for one document; “Enclosures:” for two or more documents. Below this, list each enclosure you are including.

Enclosures example:

Sincerely, Tom Smith

Enclosures:

  • Letter of recommendation

The best way to get inspired to write a good cover letter is by looking at solid examples written for the same role you’re applying for.

Check out our collection of cover letter examples for various industries and job titles for inspiration to write your stellar letter.

Here are six of the most-searched cover letter examples in our database:

Sales Associate

Customer Service Representative

Administrative Assistant

Assistant Manager

You’ve written a great cover letter; now is the time to run through this checklist to ensure your letter is the best it can be.

  • Did you choose a cover letter template that complements your resume?
  • Did you include a cover letter heading with your name, professional email, phone number, date and links to relevant social media profiles?
  • Did you greet the hiring manager by name in your salutation?
  • Does your opening paragraph grab the reader’s attention, disclose your current job title, desired position and motivation for applying?
  • Do your body paragraphs prove your value and include skills and quantifiable achievements relevant to the role you’re applying for?
  • Did you describe how your experiences align with the job requirements?
  • Do you convince the hiring manager that you’re passionate about the company you’re applying to?
  • Did you close your cover letter by suggesting a job interview, thank the reader, and use a formal signature?
  • Did you ensure there are no spelling and grammar mistakes?

To recap the main points of how to write a good cover letter, keep these tips in mind:

  • Write a fresh, custom cover letter for every job you apply to.
  • Keep it to three to four paragraphs under one page.
  • Use your cover letter to expand on details in your resume and tell a story.
