How to Become a Fashion Designer

Are you passionate about fashion? Do you have a keen eye for detail and a love for creativity? Then a career as a fashion designer might be the perfect fit for you. Fashion designers are the creative minds behind the clothing and accessories we wear – they bring their unique ideas to life and set the trends that define the industry. In addition to being an exciting and fulfilling career choice, fashion design also offers a competitive salary.

If you’ve ever wondered why some fashion designers are more successful than others, it all comes down to their skills and the opportunities they create for themselves. Fashion design is a multifaceted field that requires a wide range of skills, from sketching and draping to textiles and pattern-making. In today’s digital age, knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) programs is also essential.

Building a strong portfolio is another crucial aspect of becoming a fashion designer. A portfolio is a collection of your best work, showcasing your creativity, technical skills, and unique vision. It includes sketches, illustrations, photographs, and examples of garments you have created or worked on. Designers often use their portfolios to apply for jobs, impress clients, or showcase their work to the media.

While formal education is not always a requirement to become a fashion designer, it can greatly enhance your chances of success. Many designers choose to enroll in fashion design programs or complete courses in related fields. These programs provide aspiring designers with the necessary instructions, learning opportunities, and industry insights to kickstart their careers. Some popular fashion design programs include those offered by national schools or top fashion houses.

When it comes to breaking into the industry, networking and gaining experience are key. Volunteering, interning, or working as an apprentice can provide valuable hands-on experience and open doors to future opportunities. Taking on entry-level positions in fashion retail or sales can also help you learn more about the industry and gain insight into consumer trends.

In 2020, fashion designers have more opportunities than ever before to showcase their work. In addition to traditional fashion weeks and trade shows, designers can use social media and online platforms to reach a wider audience. Creating an online presence and engaging with followers can help you build a brand and gain recognition within the industry.

While a career in fashion design is undoubtedly rewarding, it also requires hard work, dedication, and long hours. Fashion designers often work under tight deadlines and have to keep up with the constantly changing trends. However, if you have a true passion for fashion and a determination to succeed, the journey to becoming a fashion designer can be an exciting and fulfilling one.

So if you’ve always had a knack for style and a love for all things fashion, don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams. Take the first step towards a career in fashion design by honing your skills, building your portfolio, and seizing every opportunity that comes your way. With the right amount of talent, creativity, and confidence, you can make a mark in the fashion industry and be a part of shaping its future.

Follow these tips, stay true to yourself, and never stop learning. With dedication and hard work, you can turn your passion into a successful and fulfilling career as a fashion designer.

Passion for Fashion: The First Step Towards Becoming a Fashion Designer

When it comes to pursuing a career in the fashion industry, having a passion for fashion is the first and most crucial step. Becoming a fashion designer is more than just a job or a trade – it is a calling that requires dedication, creativity, and a true love for the world of fashion.

Whether you spend hours browsing fashion magazines, breaking down the latest runway looks, or constantly searching for new trends online, your passion for fashion is what will drive you towards a successful career in this industry. It is this passion that will push you to constantly push the boundaries of design and make your mark in the fashion world.

Before applying to fashion design programs or universities, it’s important to have a clear understanding of what it means to be a fashion designer. This includes knowing the technical aspects of the trade, such as pattern-making, sewing, and garment construction, as well as having a strong eye for design and an understanding of color, texture, and proportion.

While formal education is not always a requirement to become a fashion designer, many entry-level positions and higher-paying jobs may require a degree or certificate from an accredited fashion program. These programs not only provide students with the necessary technical skills, but also offer valuable networking opportunities and access to industry professionals.

Building a strong portfolio is essential for anyone looking to break into the fashion industry. A well-curated portfolio showcases your design skills, creativity, and ability to translate your ideas onto paper or a digital platform. It is also a tool that demonstrates to potential employers or clients your unique style and vision.

When it comes to the fashion industry, location can play a significant role in your career trajectory. Fashion hubs such as New York, London, Paris, and Milan offer a wealth of opportunities for aspiring fashion designers. However, with the rise of digital media and online shopping, the industry is becoming more accessible from anywhere in the world.

In addition to having a passion for fashion, successful fashion designers also possess strong communication and networking skills. Building relationships with industry professionals, such as buyers, sales managers, and accessory firms, can help open doors and provide invaluable opportunities.

While the average salary for fashion designers can vary greatly depending on factors such as location, experience, and the size of the firm they work for, entry-level designers can expect to earn around $35,000 to $45,000 per year. However, with experience and a successful career, the earning potential can rise significantly.

When it comes to the fashion industry, the path to success is not always straightforward. However, having a passion for fashion and a strong drive to succeed can help guide aspiring designers on their journey. So, if you’re ready to dive into the world of fashion design, use this comprehensive guide to help you along the way.

Education and Training: Acquiring the Necessary Skills

For those looking to embark on a career in fashion design, acquiring the necessary education and training is critical. Becoming a fashion designer requires much more than just a creative eye and a passion for style. It involves acquiring technical skills, understanding the industry, and being able to showcase your unique design aesthetic.

Educational Opportunities

In the fashion industry, there are several educational paths that can lead to a successful career. Many colleges and universities offer specialized programs in fashion design, where students can learn about the different aspects of the industry, such as fashion history, trend forecasting, and garment construction. These programs typically last for 3 to 4 years and provide a well-rounded education in fashion design.

In addition to traditional college programs, there are also a number of online courses and workshops available for those who prefer a more flexible learning environment. These digital programs allow aspiring fashion designers to learn at their own pace and gain the necessary skills needed to succeed in the industry.

Hands-On Experience

While education is an important aspect of becoming a fashion designer, hands-on experience is equally valuable. Many new designers choose to work as apprentices or interns within the industry, where they can learn from experienced professionals and gain insight into the day-to-day workings of a fashion design studio.

By working with others in the industry, aspiring fashion designers can learn about the wholesale and retail aspects of the business, how to collaborate with buyers and manufacturers, and how to showcase their work to potential clients. This hands-on experience is invaluable and can help new designers build their portfolio and network within the industry.

The Future of Fashion Design Education

As the fashion industry continues to evolve, so do the educational opportunities for aspiring designers. In 2020, the National Carlton Association defines fashion design as one of the top five careers in terms of job growth and potential ROI. This industry is expected to grow by 5% from 2020-2023, creating new opportunities for those with the right skills and knowledge.

With the rise of digital technology, new career paths within the fashion industry are also emerging. This includes roles such as digital fashion designer, where individuals use virtual tools to create and showcase their designs. As the industry continues to change, fashion designers must be ready to adapt and learn new skills in order to stay relevant.

Whether you choose to pursue a traditional college program or opt for online courses, acquiring the necessary skills and education is critical for success in the fashion industry. By combining technical knowledge with hands-on experience and staying abreast of industry trends, aspiring fashion designers can set themselves apart and thrive in this competitive field.

Building a portfolio: showcasing your talent

When it comes to pursuing a career as a fashion designer, having a ready and up-to-date portfolio is crucial. A portfolio is a collection of your best work that demonstrates your skills, creativity, and unique style. It serves as a visual representation of your talent and can be the key factor in landing your dream job or getting accepted into prestigious fashion programs.

Why are portfolios important?

Portfolios are essential for fashion designers because they provide tangible evidence of your abilities and accomplishments. They showcase your technical skills, attention to detail, and understanding of design principles. Portfolios also demonstrate your ability to think critically, problem-solve, and collaborate with others.

For entry-level fashion designers, a strong portfolio can compensate for a lack of professional experience. Employers and fashion schools value portfolios that show potential and drive. They want to see your ability to translate ideas into designs and understand the elements that make a collection cohesive and visually appealing.

In today’s digital age, a portfolio is more important than ever. Online portfolios give potential employers and collaborators easy access to your work. It allows them to see your progress and development, and it gives you the opportunity to stand out in a sea of applicants.

Steps to creating a portfolio

Building a portfolio involves several key steps:

  • Learning the trade: Before you can create a portfolio, you need to have a solid foundation in fashion design. Take courses, learn about textiles, watch instructional videos, and seek hands-on experiences to develop your skills and knowledge.
  • Collecting your best work: Choose the pieces that best represent your style and abilities. Whether it’s sketches, technical drawings, or actual garments, select a variety of work that showcases your creativity and range.
  • Caring about the details: Pay attention to the presentation of your portfolio. Organize your work in a logical and visually appealing way. Label each piece with relevant information, such as materials used, inspiration, and techniques employed.
  • Getting feedback: Seek feedback from industry professionals and mentors. They can provide valuable insights and help you identify areas for improvement.
  • Updating regularly: Your portfolio should be a living document that reflects your growth as a designer. Regularly update it with your latest work and remove pieces that no longer represent your current skill level or style.

Having confidence in your portfolio

Confidence is key when presenting your portfolio to others. Practice presenting and talking about your work until you feel comfortable discussing your design choices, inspirations, and process. The more confident and knowledgeable you appear, the more likely you are to impress potential employers, clients, or fashion school admissions boards.

Ultimately, becoming a successful fashion designer requires hard work, dedication, and a standout portfolio. By following the steps outlined above and putting in the necessary time and effort, you can create a portfolio that showcases your talent and sets you on the path to a rewarding career in the fashion industry.

Gaining industry experience: internships and apprenticeships

Gaining industry experience is a crucial aspect of becoming a successful fashion designer. It provides aspiring designers with the opportunity to work with experienced professionals, learn from their expertise, and develop their own skills and creativity in a real-world setting. Internships and apprenticeships are excellent ways to gain this valuable experience and are often considered stepping stones to a successful career in the fashion industry.

An internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work in a fashion-related company, allowing them to apply what they have learned in a practical setting. These positions can be paid or unpaid, and typically last for a few months. During an internship, individuals may be involved in various tasks such as assisting with design projects, attending meetings, providing support to the design team, and learning about the overall workings of the fashion industry.

Apprenticeships, on the other hand, are a more long-term commitment and provide a structured training program for individuals to learn the trade of fashion designing. Apprenticeships typically last for a few years and require individuals to work under the guidance of experienced professionals. These programs aim to teach a wide range of skills, including design techniques, pattern-making, garment construction, and communication skills.

When searching for internships or apprenticeships, it is essential to look for opportunities that align with your career goals and interests. Researching fashion companies, contacting industry professionals, and utilizing online platforms can help you find relevant opportunities.

Internships and apprenticeships are not only a way to gain first-hand experience; they also provide an opportunity to network with industry professionals, which is crucial for future career growth. Building relationships with mentors and colleagues can open doors to job opportunities and valuable connections in the fashion industry.

Keep in mind that internships may come with some costs, such as travel expenses and living costs, especially if the position is in a different city or country. However, the knowledge and experience gained during an internship or apprenticeship are invaluable and can significantly contribute to your overall skill set and future success as a fashion designer.

Overall, gaining industry experience through internships and apprenticeships is a vital step in becoming a fashion designer. It allows individuals to discover and refine their creative abilities, learn from experienced professionals, and earn recognition in the fashion workforce. Whether it is through volunteering, internships, or apprenticeships, taking the initiative to gain real-world experience can break down the barriers to entering the fashion industry and set the foundation for a rewarding career.

What should I include in my design portfolio?

Your design portfolio should include your best fashion designs, sketches, technical drawings, fashion illustrations, fabric swatches, and any other visual representations of your design work. It is important to showcase your creative abilities, attention to detail, and technical skills in your portfolio.

How many designs should I include in my portfolio?

There is no set number of designs that you should include in your portfolio, but it is recommended to have a diverse range of designs that showcase your skills and creativity. It is better to have a smaller number of high-quality designs than a large number of mediocre ones. Aim to include your best work that represents your unique style and aesthetic.

Fashion experts emphasize that an appreciation for beauty and strong visual observation abilities are a must for future fashion designers.

The greatest thrill of being a fashion designer , many of them say, has nothing to do with dressing up supermodels for glamorous events and watching them walk down runways wearing the clothing you designed – though that is a plus and a sign of success. What makes the job truly exciting, several designers say, is watching an everyday person smile when they put on an outfit you created that makes them feel confident.

"As far as the most gratifying thing, it's hearing and seeing people's reactions to the clothes and hearing them say, 'I feel comfortable,'" says fashion brand founder Franne Golde, an award-winning musician and songwriter who created a slenderizing product for women called "magic pant" and now sells multiple versions of that product in addition to women's basics and loungewear.

"You can see when somebody tries something on and they feel good, it's almost like they're empowered," she says. "You know, they look in the mirror, and they love what they see."

Fashion designers make all types of attire from casual to formal, and they are sometimes involved in creating wearable gadgets like smartwatches or accessories like hats, handbags and shoes. They also sometimes produce costumes and wardrobes for plays and movies and can help create patterns for high-tech uniforms such as those worn by firefighters and astronauts.

How to Tell if a Job as a Fashion Designer Is a Good Fit

To excel as a fashion designer, a person must have clear artistic vision and an ability to differentiate objective criticism from subjective opinion, fashion industry experts say.

"You're the right fit for this if you trust your instincts," says Ashley Clark, founder of Soigné Luxury Accessories. "Fashion is a lot of going with your gut ... You've got to be a really strong, self-aware, creative individual."

Longtime fashion designer Bern Conrad, who has produced a significant amount of silk apparel, sportswear and knitwear over the course of his career and plans to launch a modern casual fashion line under his own name this fall, notes that a unique perspective and a distinctive identity are essential for a career as a designer.

"Design is all about getting to know who you are, because you have to express who you are, and you have to be able to convey that to your ultimate customer and client," says Conrad, an alumnus of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, a prestigious school that has educated world-famous fashion designers such as Calvin Klein.

Fashion experts emphasize that an appreciation for beauty and strong visual observation abilities are a must for future fashion designers, but they note that having a good eye is not sufficient, since what counts most is the ability to conceptualize and manufacture clothing items that are somehow better than what is already out there.

One clue that you belong in the fashion industry, experts say, is if you enjoy sewing your own clothes or if you have created costumes for school plays. Some fashion designers explain that they discovered their calling, because they realized how much they enjoyed showcasing their personality through the way they dressed.

"I was always intrigued by the transformative power of fashion and the idea of self expression through clothing," Nicole Ghosn, a senior designer at Marc Jacobs, wrote in an email.

"As a quiet and introverted teenager, I found it easier to express myself through what I wore. I spent countless hours watching the runway shows and obsessing over the looks I would want to create for myself and for others," recalls Ghosn, an alumna of the Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York City, another top fashion design school and the alma mater of industry titans like Isaac Mizrahi.

Fashion designers warn that preparing for and beginning a fashion career is difficult since it is a highly competitive industry, so anyone who intends to enter this field must be hardworking and persistent. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that there will be 4% fewer fashion design jobs in 2029 than there were in 2019. The median salary among U.S. fashion designers in 2020 was $75,810, according to BLS figures, though the challenge of securing full-time work in the field is important to consider when assessing that figure.

Experts on fashion design warn that it is a technical field that requires precision, so a potential fashion designer should think about whether he or she would enjoy the mechanics of creating clothing or other fashion products.

"Your abilities and knowledge about tailoring and construction give you an advantage when you're designing and visualizing fabric properties, silhouette, drape, and unusual construction methods in clothing," Jennifer McGrew, a fashion and costume designer based in Utah, wrote in an email. "Individuals who are mainly just interested in pop culture's 'glamorous' depictions of work in the fashion industry are kidding themselves. "

Steps to Becoming a Fashion Designer

  • Consider attending a reputable fashion design school.
  • Assemble an impressive and unique portfolio.
  • Befriend your peers and seek more experienced mentors.
  • Find a variety of challenging jobs.
  • Save money and spend wisely if you intend to start a brand.

Consider Attending a Reputable Fashion Design School

It is possible to become a fashion designer without formal education in the field, but some experts suggest that, without attending a formal fashion design program affiliated with a well-known school, it is more challenging to break into the fashion industry.

"I'm the first to admit the road that I traveled to get to where I am was not painted in gold," says Clark, a former NFL cheerleader, pageant queen and model who learned the fundamentals of fashion design on her own. "Going to fashion school would have alleviated a lot of hiccups along the way just in terms of even the most minor of things. I mean, I had to teach myself how to sew. I had to teach myself how to dye fabric."

To gain the knowledge she needed for her dream career as a fashion designer, Clark read a lot about fashion, watched YouTube videos and attended master class courses taught by renowned designers.

Lucy Dunne, a professor and director with the apparel design program at the University of Minnesota College of Design, says fashion design programs generally teach students how to brainstorm, how to explain and sell their ideas through sketches or three-dimensional models, and how to execute their vision through two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional garments.

While a fashion design degree can be extremely beneficial professionally, lacking one doesn't make it impossible to break into the industry, experts note. Some of the most famous fashion designers, including Coco Chanel and Michael Kors, never finished – or didn't attend – college or design school.

"The fashion industry does not require certification or licensing for the designer role," Abby Lillethun, chairperson of the art and design department at Montclair State University in New Jersey, pointed out in an email. "The skills and knowledge base may be acquired through a combination of academic work and skill development from working in studios and on project teams in the industry. Also, sometimes an entrepreneurial individual finds success without formal training."

Assemble an Impressive and Unique Portfolio

In order to become competitive for fashion design schools or internships, aspiring designers need to assemble an intriguing collection of their designs, experts say.

Conrad cautions against submitting a portfolio that isn't true to who you are and that is based on what you think others want to see. "Just do who you are – what you want to be, who you want to be or are being," he says.

Befriend Your Peers and Seek More Experienced Mentors

Fashion experts note that fashion is an industry where personal connections matter.

Dunne urges fashion design students to get to know their school faculty and classmates. She notes that fashion schools can offer great suggestions on where to find jobs, and she suggests relying on their fashion school alumni networks to get job leads after graduating.

According to Conrad, most early career fashion designers could use some guidance. He says a generous and experienced designer regularly offered him useful advice when he was starting out and urges anyone interested in fashion design to look for a skilled individual in the industry "who is open to share their experience and knowledge."

Find a Variety of Challenging Jobs

Rowell Concepcion, owner of Binata Millinery in New York, urges early-career fashion designers who want to eventually start their own label to combine experience at a well-known and long-established brand with some time at an emerging brand.

Concepcion notes that a job at a high-end fashion company adds credibility to a designer's resume, but he says that the struggle of starting a new brand is so intense that it forces people to develop grit.

If possible, Concepcion says, it is optimal for designers to get experience on the public relations or sales side of a fashion company so they can understand the business side of fashion.

Dunne emphasizes that taking a job at a new fashion company is a good way for potential fashion entrepreneurs to gauge whether they truly want to start their own venture. "You can't really see what it's actually like until you're immersed in it," she says. "It's easier to be immersed in someone else's risk than your own."

Save Money and Spend Wisely if You Intend to Start a Brand

Concepcion recommends that designers who want to start their own label save 20% to 30% of their earnings so that they can eventually invest that money in a company. That's a significant sacrifice, he acknowledges, but he notes that starting a fashion brand requires "a lot of capital."

It's best to direct most of the brand seed money to product development and testing, Concepcion says, noting that fashion shows are less critical to launching a fashion company than they used to be.

"You can get traction just on social media and building your own personal brand," he says, noting that financing companies like Hilldun Corporation provide support to fashion designers and brands.

How to Set and Achieve Your Fashion Career Goals

An employee in a meeting, smiling and looking at someone speaking.

The BoF Careers series, Insider Advice, offers advice from leading fashion professionals, HR leaders and academics, to answer topical careers questions for today’s fashion employees, to help inform and guide you in your career. Check out the latest job opportunities with 2,500+ roles on BoF Careers today .

In the professional context, strategising your career progression can help you define and visualise success in concrete terms, as well as break down how you may achieve it, helping you see success as attainable. Indeed, neuroscience research suggests people who do so are 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to accomplish their goals, as reported by Forbes .

Nevertheless, the process might feel “overwhelming if you don’t break it down, because then you just don’t know where to start,” says Carla Isabel Carstens, former fashion PR executive turned career coach and strategic fashion communications professor at LIM College’s Graduate Studies Department. “Figuring out how am I getting from X to Y [makes it] easier to outline a strategy, understand it and communicate it, because you understand the reason you’re doing that thing and how it’s going to impact you.”

While there exist several frameworks for goal setting, most are similar in essence, dictating the goal setter first identifies their emotional drivers and motivations before creating a detailed, multi-stage roadmap of their next steps, potential obstacles and respective solutions, before finally placing it all on a timeline.

Since fashion is a notoriously competitive industry, emerging talent often does not have the luxury of choice of entry-level roles, and is urged to expand their horizons and seize opportunities that may not perfectly align with their ambitions just to get their foot in the door.

“At the start of your career, it’s more about discovery [of] what’s out there, how can you apply yourself. Sometimes you just fall into [a role] not by design, but by default — an opportunity comes along, or a [part-time] job — and you might get into your work and want more responsibility,” says Tracy Short, executive career consultant and coach, whose clients include Dr Martens, Harrods, Levi’s, Mango and Moncler, among others. “In the early days, it’s more around experience, trying new things, getting involved and understanding how things work.”

Senior executives and managers also benefit from actively encouraging employees to pursue career goals, be it through mentorship or training schemes. More than a kind act, this has a positive knock-on effect in the workplace, as shown by a study conducted by leadership training and employee engagement firm Leadership IQ. The study found that employees with access to formal training, for example, were 57 percent more engaged in their work, and those whose goals aligned with their organisation’s goals were 75 percent more engaged.

At the onset of 2023, BoF Careers sought the advice of seasoned fashion recruiters, career coaches and academic lecturers on how industry talent — junior and senior — can successfully set and achieve their professional goals.

Conduct a Personal Reflection

Perhaps counterintuitively, effective goal-setting does not start by jotting down a list of desired objectives. Rather, it begins by asking yourself why you want to achieve something in the first place.

Accomplishing your goals is not easy, and the process requires commitment and persistence, which is easier to maintain long-term if you outline your drivers and motivations from the get-go. This helps form a stronger emotional bond with the desired outcome, which in turn raises your chances of achieving it.

“Before you set goals and [how to] accomplish them, it’s important that you figure out why you want to achieve those goals, because when they are connected to a purpose or a reason, they become more meaningful, and it makes them easier to accomplish and to figure out what distractions are in your way,” says Carstens.

Short adds that “goal-setting comes from identifying gaps — what you want to do more of and what you want to do less of. Tune into yourself.”

This reflection will also come in handy later on when you are inevitably met with challenges or feelings of frustration. Re-reading a personal statement detailing your starting point and comparing it to where you are now can serve as a dopamine hit that engages your motivational systems anew. To maximise this effect, make sure your reflection uses words that evoke a growth mindset, such as “improve”, “develop”, “over time”, “progress”, “become” and “grow”.

List Your Goals, Obstacles and Solutions

Once you are clear on your “why”, reverse-engineer your ambitions to plan the necessary steps to accomplish them.

Sacha Milazzo Mercier is co-founder and director of G&M — a consultancy specialising in the recruitment and training of fashion talent. A trained clinical psychologist, Mercier has previously worked in the recruitment department at Louis Vuitton and is a guest speaker at London College of Fashion and Istituto Marangoni, among others. He advises fashion talent to start this process by being honest with themselves.

“[Identify] your skills and expertise, and look into what you want [to achieve]. You have to be aware of what you are good at, but also what you are not good at, because if you want to achieve a certain position, you have to understand what gaps you have to fill,” he says. “You also have to be objective with yourself — what are you willing to do? Fashion is a tough industry to enter and grow into, so you have to understand what you are willing to sacrifice.”

If you want to achieve a certain position, you have to understand what gaps you have to fill.

This pragmatic approach will reveal relevant focus points or changes you have to make in the short and long-term, and also help you think of your goals as realistic and attainable, further increasing the likelihood of achieving them. Remain self-aware and develop a strategy that reconciles your current positioning — your free time, skillset and experience — with objective parameters like the current job market and vocational standards.

Document all of this in writing because, according to research from the Dominican University of California, 61 percent of goals that are written down are eventually achieved, and those who write their goals down formulate action commitments and send reports about their weekly progress to their friends, achieving 76 percent of their goals.

Create a Roadmap

Having clearly defined your target and how to achieve it, build a roadmap to guide you.

Mercier believes designing the right path for yourself is done through data collection and conversations with others. He advises that you refer to outstanding professionals and their journeys for inspiration.

“With LinkedIn, you can discover what the people who have [your desired] job do, where they have been studying, what skills and tools they have learnt, what is their expertise,” he says. “In luxury production, for example, it is very important to speak French or Italian because [...] a lot of luxury products are still made in France [and] Italy. Learning a new language might take time.”

Carstens suggests creating a timeline that fits your immediate needs and schedule. “If your goal is to get your first job in fashion, I would recommend breaking [it] down step by step, whether that’s in 30 days or three-month increments [...] Think: what do [you] need to do in order to get a job? [You] need a resume, a cover letter, references — that is a month’s worth of work.”

For more senior professionals, “the first thing [to consider] is what can you achieve at your current company, any leads or ways that you can get a promotion,” says Short. Whether you wish to leave your current company or perhaps freelance, you should look for a “similar type of environment with more chance to grow. [...] Think strategically about how you are going to get somewhere.”

Be Agile and Persistent

As the past three years have illustrated, remaining agile in the face of tumultuous circumstances is the only way to get through them. In career planning, Mercier advises to “be open-minded, flexible and ready to adapt your plan.”

Whether you have only just started your fashion career or you wish to change direction, things might not immediately fall into place. “I compare your career to a ladder. Each role should guide you one step closer to the place you want to be in 10 years. Sometimes, that step might not look like you think it should, but if you are truly strategic about where your final stop is, you don’t have to worry,” says Carstens.

Put the time in to attend an event, gain insights, post it on LinkedIn and reach out. That says something about a potential candidate.

Carstens suggests, for those who did not have the opportunity to intern, to “attend industry events, whether it be virtual or in-person, and listen. [Afterwards,] get on LinkedIn — not Instagram — and write a synopsis of the event and what you learnt from it. Tag the people you would have loved to meet, and then send them that via LinkedIn. [Tell] them how much you appreciated [their insight], and that if there was ever an opportunity to have a 15-minute conversation to talk about X — be specific — that you would really appreciate it.

“That strategy has [helped] multiple of my clients [book] coffee meetings with C-level executives because of the thoughtfulness behind it. They put the time in to attend an event, gain insights, post it on LinkedIn and reach out. That says something about a potential candidate.”

Seek Out External Support

Having a support network by your side through the career planning process is an invaluable, sometimes differentiating, resource. First, it allows for a more objective reflection of yourself and your capabilities at a time when you may feel more judgemental or critical of those things, offering you a more balanced perspective.

Moreover, support from a manager or a mentor could propel your progression at your company and the industry as a whole. Leaders do not always volunteer feedback, but you should seek it out proactively.

“Schedule time with your boss to get feedback or ask them questions. Don’t wait for them to give you that opportunity, because they might not realise that you’re not getting the oversight or mentorship you need. It shows that you care, and at the end of the day, senior-level employees want employees that care,” says Carstens.

Mercier believes managers are best positioned to support employees’ development as the ones who oversee them directly, with the ability to act as a mirror to identify strengths and weaknesses. Still, he advises fashion professionals seek out external mentors to diversify the pool of opinions they receive.

“Our brain works better when we access diversity, when we get rid of stereotypes. [...] Looking outside [the company] gives you access to diversity, opens up your mind and makes you look further and discover new things,” he says.

Editor’s Note: This article was amended on 11 January 2023 to correctly state Carla Isabel Carstens’ professorial position at LIM College.

Fashion Designer: Applying for a Job

Swot analysis, leadership and conflict solving.

Additionally to the strength issues in the SWOT matrix, it should be emphasized that my leadership skills are extensively developed, and jointly with the problem solving skills my leadership has helped me to take the control over problematic situations several times. Thus, when the team assignment was performed, a serious conflict appeared between two members of the team. Originally, the aggravation of the conflict was obvious, as other participants started taking the side of one of the opponents. I had to take the situation under my control, and the solution, which had been offered, satisfied both sides. Thus my leadership became the defining factor for the destiny of the entire project, as two people had an opportunity to endanger the work performed by the group.

Originally, conflicts are the common things in team projects, nevertheless, the main aim, which should be pursued by team leader is the redirection of the conflict for it was useful for the project, and as a leader I always aim to derive the benefits from any conflict. In accordance with the conflictology rules, any conflict is the engine of progress, nevertheless, it should not exceed the personality barriers. Solving a conflict, I always try to use the energy, spent for arguments, turn in order to originate new ideas and concepts, thus, making the conflict creative, but not personal.

Recruiter analysis

  • Phone Conversation
  • Private Interview
  • Creative Task

HR manager and, probably, head of the design department will be involved in this process.

Originally, the companies are looking for the workers, who are able to offer innovative and original ideas. On the one hand, they need to hear something booming, on the other hand, there is no need to discover all the ideas and considerations and leave them for further work or as a final accord in the recruitment process.

Once on a job I am expected to study hard all the details and particularities of the work, including working in team, communications, and cooperation of the departments. Then, I should be able to work in the required rhythm and regime for being a successful worker of the company.

Competitive analysis

Similarities:

  • With their own original and unique ideas
  • Able to work for their ideas
  • Strong willed
  • Wish to work in a fashion design sphere

Differences:

  • Unable to work overtime
  • Unable to work under pressure
  • Wish to work in other companies

Insight and Specification

Originally, fashion design companies required creative and wit employees, who will be able to generate ideas quickly, analyze the fashion market wisely, and solve the appeared professionally. Nevertheless, there is strong necessity to emphasize that workers who are able to join all the enlisted qualities are few, as some are more professional in design, the others possess better managerial and leading features. Consequently, I will have to select the sphere, I am more interested in, and develop my skills in the selected direction, and take into consideration all the possible variants, which may be required for working as a fashion designer. Thus, my problem solver skills may not be required, as I am more interested in design; nevertheless, these will be extremely useful if some team members will be too impulsive and emotional while discussing their ideas collectively.

Anyway, the main purpose of the fashion designer is to know what consumers want, and to implement these ideas into creative solutions, based on the experience, good taste and the values of customer care policy. If the company is engaged in the sphere of individual design, the tastes and body parameters of the consumers should be properly studied, and my communicational skills will be very useful for this.

Finally, it should be stated that the values of fashion design are generally explained by the factors associated with the requirements of the fashion market and the latest tendencies of clothes design.

Strategy Development

I need to leave an impression of a person, who is:

  • Able to learn quickly
  • With original and unique / innovative ideas

In other words I need to leave an impression of a person, they strongly wish to have as a worker in their company.

Brand Direction

Segmenting: I would like to be involved in the sphere of children’s clothes and fashion, as little fashioners deserve their own segment of fashion design. Moreover, it is the only sphere, where fantasy and creation is almost unlimited due to the imagination of young audience.

Targeting: Surely, these are the companies, which produce clothes for children, or those, who wish to expand their production.

Positioning: My personal brand should be positioned as original, creative but comfortable casual wear. It is useless to invent something vanguard, as little consumers and their parents will not understand it. They need comfortable and good-looking clothes.

Integrated Marketing Mix

  • I have a strong determination to become a professional
  • I am able to self motivate
  • I am a workaholic
  • I know my obligations as a fashion designer

Unfortunately, there are no references, so, I’ll have to act myself.

As for the issues of leadership, I was a leader of a designing group during practical studies. This also entailed a conflict, when two participants of the group were in conflict. I managed to persuade them that the needs and requirements of the team are more important than their own relations.

My own approach to work is associated with the matters of self motivation and realization of the company’s requirements and aims in the market of fashion design.

Design itself is the large business segment, and it is subjected to marketing and business rules as any other profitable activity.

The time when I was the most creative was when our university group was divided into teams and we were creating our term project. So, the main inspiration comes to me when there is a spirit of competition.

Elevator Pitch

I am able to self motivate, and, as a leader in my university group I had an experience of resolving conflicts. On the other hand, I am not so experienced as I wish, so, I have a great stimulus for the self development.

The tools, which will be used for outreaching the key decision makers are the following:

  • Interview preparation
  • Personal presentation/appearance
  • Communication style/skills

Originally, these should be the hooks, that will allow me to catch their attention to myself, and will never let it go.

Getting prepared for an interview, I would like to mention that creativity is the credo of my life, as non-traditional approaches and innovative views are the key aspects of success in modeling and design of the clothes. Consequently, I am absolutely sure of my success, and the further creativity in my works. In order to keep the creativity level high, I often arrange creativity marathons for myself, generating ideas and brainstorming for finding unusual solution for any problem.

Resume and Interview Preparation

Resume for the interview will be mainly based on the experience in the sphere of creativity and garment design, as the key requirement for a fashion designer is the ability to generate and implement new ideas. As for the matters of interview, the key preparation aspect is the preparedness for the questions, which may be asked. Originally, all the questions should not be complex, as I have all the necessary requirements for working as a designer, and I am able to accomplish any test assignment, which may be given during the interview.

Personal Presentation

Surely, I am not going to boast, and personal presentation will be based on my self-confidence, and assuredness in my communicational and professional skills. Otherwise, all the guarantees that I am an experienced designer and responsible worker will not be accepted for granted. My aim is to show my experience indirectly, by answering questions, solving possible problems, providing ideas, etc.

The communication style during the interview should be based on self-confidence. The strategy will entail strong motivation to work in this sphere, awareness on the matters of rights and responsibilities, as well as challenges and problems, which are obvious and inevitable, while working as a fashion designer, the requirements for the corporate behavior, and subordination with the interviewer. Ideally, the communication process should be properly planned, and I am going to think over the possible questions and test assignments, which may be given during the interview.

To blend in with one's social group, one should dress appropriately for the occasion.
