Essay writing is not everyone’s cup of tea. Most students find it difficult to begin writing. Essays can be made easier if students start thinking about the topic either through brainstorming or by putting them down on a sheet of paper. After getting the ideas, they need to know how to organise them to form an essay. For this, they need to practise essays on different topics. Here, we have compiled a list of Essays on various topics.

These are the general essay topics which are most likely to be asked in the exam. Some of these essay topics are also picked from past year papers. Students of Classes 6 to 10 can go through these essays and know the right way of expressing their thoughts to form a perfect essay. Apart from the CBSE , students of ICSE and other state boards can also use these topics to prepare for their English exams.

Essay Topics: List and Writing Ideas

Usually, one essay is asked in the English paper. The essay writing question mainly comes under the writing section and comprises 5 to 10 marks. By having a look at the essays on the below-mentioned topics, students can easily score these marks in the exam.

Characteristics of a Good Essay

A composition on a particular topic consisting of more than one paragraph is an essay. The characteristics of a good essay are:

1) Unity: The essay should deal with the main subject and all parts of it should be clearly linked with that subject.

2) Coherence: There should be a logical sequence of thought. This requires a logical relationship between ideas, sentences and paragraphs.

3) Relevance: Unimportant information should not be included.

4) Proportion: Give more space to important ideas.

Types of Essays

Essays are mainly ways of expressing one’s ideas and thoughts. Essays vary in how one narrates a personal experience, describes an issue, or convinces the reader to accept a certain viewpoint. So, essays are mainly classified into four major types, as mentioned below:

1) Narrative Essays: Telling a Story

While writing a narrative essay, students must consider the topic as if telling a story. Through these essays, they can express themselves in a creative way. These essays are usually written in the first person, so as to engage the readers.

2) Descriptive Essays: Painting a Picture with Words

In a descriptive essay, students have to paint a picture with words. They have to describe something. It can be an object, person, place, experience, emotion, situation or anything else. These essays allow students a great deal of artistic freedom.

3) Expository Essays: Presentation of the Facts

An expository essay is an informative piece of writing that presents a balanced analysis of a topic. To write a good expository essay, students need to investigate the topic, evaluate evidence, express the idea, and set forth an argument clearly and concisely. It can be done by comparison and contrast, definition, example, the analysis of cause and effect, etc.

4) Persuasive Essays: Convince Me

A persuasive essay is one in which a writer tries to convince the reader to accept his/her viewpoint. It presents all sides of the argument but clearly communicates the writer’s personal opinion.

The following points should be remembered while practising essay writing: 1. Constant written practice is required for honing essay writing skills. Writing alone tests the competency of the students to ideate and execute a proper essay within a specified time. 2. Such knowledge can be acquired by regularly developing a habit of reading extensively — especially newspapers and magazines — and following other news sources on various media available to them. 3. Developing a good vocabulary is another important factor students should focus on. Essay writing demands a more formal and extensive vocabulary as the range of topics asked are so wide-ranging. Every topic will demand familiarity with words and phrases pertaining to it. Use of good idiomatic English rich with apt vocabulary will help students pen memorable essays.

How to write an essay on an unknown or unfamiliar topic?

If an essay topic is unfamiliar then students can try to write in general about topics which are related to the main topic. Reading magazines and books can help in acquisition of knowledge in various subject matters.

How to score high marks in essay writing?

Given below are some of the points to be considered to ensure that students can score high marks in essay writing. 1. Maintain flow of text in essay: Ensure that the essay follows a natural progression from introduction to conclusion. Make sure that each paragraph is thematically or logically connected to successive paragraphs. Only then will the essay be evocative and easy to read and comprehend. 2. Phrase the essay is a relatable way: Keep the target audience in mind while drafting the essay and use images and language that resonate with them. Otherwise it would fail to connect with the reader, even if you have come up with a decent essay. 3. Be creative: Show the audacity to think out of the box and to deviate from traditional ways of writing essays while coming up with ideas to present your viewpoints in the essay. Readers will be immediately drawn to a piece of writing that gives them a fresh perspective, even if you are writing on a very common topic. But too much creativity and idiosyncratic writing will only mar an otherwise well-researched essay. 4. Present the essay in a better manner: Always think of new ways and strategies to present your ideas which you may have drawn from multiple sources. Doing background research is definitely essential. But that does not mean that you have to present the content you found in the same way. A fresh approach can turn a boring essay into a very engaging one. 5. Do not be over confident: Essays usually require students to state personal opinions as well as facts. Be prudent in voicing your opinions as well as in stating facts – make sure you don’t hurt the sentiments of readers when writing on sensitive and controversial topics. Practice diligence, not overconfidence, while writing essays as a best practice.

Ans- I decided on an easy-to-care potted plant to give to my parents. The plant is referred to as the Chinese Money Plant. It has round, flat, shiny, dark green leaves growing up and out from the crown, each ending in a single saucer shaped leaf of about two inches in diameter. The plant is around forty cm tall and is planted in a clay pot. The pot had a simple yellow and red abstract design that complements the plant well. Answer – Har Ghar Tiranga campaign appealed to people to hoist the national flag at their homes to mark 75 years of Indian Independence in 2022. On that day, I woke up early in the morning, bathed and hoisted the Indian National Flag along with my parents in our balcony. After hoisting the flag, we took selfies and uploaded them on the platform. We then watched our beloved Prime Minister hoist the National flag at the Red Fort. My parents educated me on the significance of our flag and remembered the freedom fighters who selflessly fought for our nation’s freedom. Story writing is an art. It is the oldest form of written composition. It is a work of imagination that is written in easily understandable grammatical structure. a short story is meant to be read in a single sitting and therefore it should be as direct and brief as possible.

A short story is a fictional work of prose that is much shorter in length than a novel. Edgar Allan Poe, in his essay ‘The Philosophy of Composition,’ said that a short story should be read in one sitting.

A short story usually focuses on one plot, one main character (with a few additional minor characters), and one central theme (whereas a novel can tackle multiple plots and themes, with a variety of prominent characters). Short stories contain underlying themes or motifs that teach students to draw broader conclusions from the material and encourage them to think on a wider level about interconnected issues and themes that run throughout the material?

Question 1. Write a short story with the help of the following outline:

Tortoise and hare – good friends – tortoise – known for his slow speed – hare has fast speed – makes fun of tortoise – challenges him – referee selected – race starts – hare overconfident – takes a nap – tortoise wins.

Answer: Once there lived a tortoise and a hare in a forest. They were good friends. The tortoise was known for his slow speed. The hare was proud of his speed and he often made fun of the tortoise’s slow speed.

One day the tortoise challenged the hare to a race. The hare agreed and a horse was selected as the referee. The race started and the overconfident hare ran fast and attained a lead in the initial stage. The hare now felt like taking a short nap as he believed that he could overtake the slow tortoise any time and reach the target. The hare slept. When the hare woke up he realized that he had overslept.

He began to run fast to overtake the tortoise who slowly and steadily was reaching the target. The tortoise reached the target before the hare could do so and won the race. The moral of the story: ‘Slow and steady wins the race.

Question 2. Write a short story based on the following outline:

two cats – hungry – a loaf of bread – can’t divide – each greedy – wants more – a clever monkey – offered to help – bit by bit – rate the bread – his fee – bread finished – cats foolish – still hungry.

Once upon a time there lived two cats in a village. One day they were hungry; they searched for food but could not find anything to eat. Soon they spotted a loaf of bread on the road. Each of them was greedy and wanted to eat the bigger portion of the bread leaving the smaller portion to the other. They were arguing as to who should get the bigger share of the bread. A monkey who was passing by was amused when he heard the two cats fighting with each other. He was clever. He offered to help the cats solve their problem and the cats also agreed to it. He bit a small portion of the bread and ate it. He then bit a portion of the larger portion to equalize it. He kept on repeating this act till only a small portion was left behind. He ate that piece also saying that it was his fees. The two cats stood dumbstruck having realized their folly and remained hungry that day.

Question 3. You are Jyoti/Jaydeep. Your younger brother was badly hurt on the evening of Diwali and had to be hospitalized. Narrate your experience in the form of a story, with an appropriate title. Answer:

Diwali Evening Fiasco

Diwali is a festival of lights. Diwali evening glitters the autumn with delights of young children. It brings joys and happiness with the blessings of Goodess Lakshmi. Children burst crackers on this day. Elders also keep themselves busy to decorate their houses for Diwali celebration. My younger brother Jaydeep’s joy knew no bounds on the evening of Diwali last October. Diwali is a festival of lights. Children burst crackers on this day. So, Jaydeep bought a lot of crackers. Many friends came to meet him. Everybody asked him to accompany them. He said, “I am waiting for Tiku and Monu. They will bring two baskets full of crackers. We will enjoy bursting crackers on the Diwali evening in our parlour.”

Tiku and Monu reached in time with two big baskets full of crackers. Some crazy boys were bursting chemical bomb–crackers. They started bursting bomb–crackers incessantly. The atmosphere got so much smoky that nothing was visible. Suddenly, one cried loudly, “I can’t see anything, I am almost blind, Who’s there? Save me, save me,” Tiku and Monu found it’s my brother terribly injured. They informed me instantly. I took him by an ambulance to the emergency department in the nearest hospital. The hospital authorities were very cooperative. They admitted my brother then and there. My brother’s life was saved, but Jaydeep lost his one eye for ever.

Bunya was a foolish boy, who liked to be given plenty of attention and was always seeking it. He was a woodcutter and would go deep into the jungle to cut trees. A Foolish Woodcutter Boy

Once there lived a poor woodcutter boy, named Bunya, near a wood. He lost his father in his childhood. As he was foolish enough to do his duty, so he liked to be given plenty of attention as to perform his duties. As he was an orphan he was always at his wits’ end and did foolish things. He was a woodcutter and would go deep into the jungle to cut trees. One day he wanted to do a mischief. He shouted at the top of his voice, “There’s a tiger, there’s a tiger.” Many villagers came rushing to his aid. But on reaching they found Bunya laughing at how easily they got duped.

It amused Bunya very much and he repeated his act. The villagers once again turned up to his aid but found out that Bunya was joking again. The villagers got irritated and vowed never to be made fun of by Bunya again. After a few days Bunya was cutting woods when he saw a tiger. He screamed and screamed for help but no one turned up for his help. Everybody thought that he was trying to fool them again but when Bunya’s mother raised the alarm that it was 8 at night and he hadn’t returned, they set out in his search only to find Bunya’s bones. The tiger roared, “Never tell a lie”.

Question 5. Complete the following story. Some lines are given to help you start.

Lala, the grocer, was very greedy. He would mix stones in pulses and coloured sand in spices and sell them to the poor villagers. Greedy Grocer

There lived a greedy grocer in Lalarampura village in Madhya Pradesh. His name was Lala Prasad. In the whole village it was the only grocery shop. So, poor villagers had to buy all the daily necessaries such as pulses, spices, rice, etc. from his shop. But Lala was a dishonest grocer. He would mix stones in pulses and rice, and coloured sand in spices and sell them with unfair prices to the poor villagers. The poor villagers lived from hand to mouth. All the villagers complained to him but he turned a deaf ear to their pleas. The villagers decided to take action against him and complained to the village panchayat.

The panchayat asked him to serve good quality items to the people which he did for a few days but soon fell back to his old ways. One day his son fell very ill and he was compelled to go to the next village to buy medicine. He brought medicine from the next village unaware that the man who sold the medicine was just as dishonest. He gave his son the medicine and found him getting worse. All the villagers prayed for the young boy and one of the villagers telegrammed his brother in town for the required medicine.

His son soon recovered and Lala learnt that the medicine was tampered with by the seller. He understood the gravity of his sin and vowed to be honest from then on.

Suraj was a very foolish man. He had no common sense and was often seen doing the silliest of things. He earned his livelihood by cutting wood.

Once there lived a young woodcutter on the outskirts of a forest. His name was Suraj Gandiv. The villagers, dearly called him Suraj. He earned his living by cutting wood from the nearest forest. He had no common sense. He was often involved in doing the silliest of things. He earned his livelihood by cutting wood. He cut wood from the nearby forest and was often tired of carrying it from the forest to the village. So he decided to cut the banyan tree at the edge of the forest. He wanted to save money so that he could get married to his beloved Chanda.

Lost in dreams, he began to cut the tree. He cut all the branches of the tree save one, the one on whose edge he was sitting. So he decided to cut off the last branch too and merrily began sawing the branch. He thought the villagers were jealous of him. So when he had given the final blow to the branch he fell down and broke his ribs. His marriage was postponed by a year. After his recovery, during this time he worked very hard and amassed a lot of money. The next year all the villagers attended his wedding. Suraj is no more foolish after that mishap.

It was very amusing to watch the squirrel trying to bite its tail; it soon sensed my presence and looked up to find me staring at it.

I took out a carrot from the shopping bag I had in my hand and offered it to the squirrel that started nibbling it immediately. It did not scamper away but to my utmost surprise jumped on to my shoulders. I felt proud that it chose me as a friend and resolved to keep it as a pet. But I forgot it was somebody’s pet. Just as I sat on the bicycle the shopkeeper came outside his shop looking for some Tony which was the pet’s nick name.

The squirrel jumped from my shoulders to the shopkeeper who fondly patted him and remarked that Tony had kept him company for three years and it was one of the members of his family. I was very disappointed at the prospect of losing Tony but was happy that Tony had a very loving and kind master.

The traffic police noticed it too and signalled the car to stop. The car halted with a screech and a lady darted towards the child and picked her up in her arms. The lady looked very relieved. She went up to the traffic police and thanked him for saving her baby’s life.

The traffic police repeatedly warned the lady not to bring the child when she went for shopping. Particularly, women these days are crazy to bring their children while going for shopping. She narrated the traffic police that while she was busy buying vegetables, the child had slipped away unnoticed. She had been looking for the child frantically then suddenly she spotted him in the middle of the road.

The traffic police reproached her for her carelessness and asked her to be more cautious in future. She should be aware of the traffic rules and act accordingly. For her part, it is an unpardonable offence to harass the police in the context of losing a child, though she may be a parent. She promised that she would never let the child out of her sight whenever she was out of house.

The father was at a loss and decided to teach them a lesson. He purchased a bear. He showered the creature with love and provided a trainer who taught the bear to dance.

The sons were surprised, perplexed and became jealous of the bear. They were planning how they could drive away the animal. They decided to kill the bear, but could not agree on a single plan of action. While one felt that the bear should be poisoned, the other wanted the bear driven out. A third wanted to leave him in the zoo, and the fourth wanted to kill the trainer. A huge quarrel broke out. On learning what his sons were planning, the father was aghast.

He told them that it was a cruel act to kill a pet animal. He was about to send for the police to arrest them for cruelty to animals when the sons realized their stupidity. They were repentant and begged to be pardoned. After extracting a promise of good behaviour and brotherly affection, the father forgave them. The family came together once again.

Descriptive Essay

A descriptive essay will describe something in great detail. The subject can be anything from people and places to objects and events but the main point is to go into depth. You might describe the item’s color, where it came from, what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, or how it feels. It is very important to allow the reader to sense what you are writing about and allow them to feel some sort of emotion whilst reading. That being said, the information should be concise and easy to understand, the use of imagery is widely used in this style of essay. 

Expository Essay

An expository essay is used as a way to look into a problem and therefore compare it and explore it. For the expository essay, there is a little bit of storytelling involved but this type of essay goes beyond that. The main idea is that it should explain an idea giving information and explanation. Your expository essay should be simple and easy to understand as well as give a variety of viewpoints on the subject that is being discussed. Often this type of essay is used as a way to detail a subject which is usually more difficult for people to understand, clearly and concisely.

Argumentative Essay

When writing an argumentative essay, you will be attempting to convince your reader about an opinion or point of view. The idea is to show the reader whether the topic is true or false along with giving your own opinion. You must use facts and data to back up any claims made within the essay. 

Format of Essay Writing

Now there is no rigid format of an essay. It is a creative process so it should not be confined within boundaries. However, there is a basic structure that is generally followed while writing essays.

This is the first paragraph of your essay. This is where the writer introduces his topic for the very first time. You can give a very brief synopsis of your essay in the introductory paragraph. Generally, it is not very long, about 4-6 lines. 

This is the main crux of your essays. The body is the meat of your essay sandwiched between the introduction and the conclusion. So the most vital content of the essay will be here. This need not be confined to one paragraph. It can extend to two or more paragraphs according to the content.

This is the last paragraph of the essay. Sometimes a conclusion will just mirror the introductory paragraph but make sure the words and syntax are different. A conclusion is also a great place, to sum up, a story or an argument. You can round up your essay by providing some morals or wrapping up a story. Make sure you complete your essays with the conclusion, leave no hanging threads.

Writing Tips

Give your essays an interesting and appropriate title. It will help draw the attention of the reader and pique their curiosity

 Keep it between 300-500 words. This is the ideal length, you can take creative license to increase or decrease it

 Keep your language simple and crisp. Unnecessary complicated and difficult words break the flow of the sentence.

 Do not make grammar mistakes, use correct punctuation and spelling five-paragraph. If this is not done it will distract the reader from the content

  Before beginning the essay, organize your thoughts and plot a rough draft. This way you can ensure the story will flow and not be an unorganized mess.

Understand the Topic Thoroughly-Sometimes we jump to a conclusion just by reading the topic once and later we realize that the topic was different than what we wrote about.  Read the topic as many times as it takes for you to align your opinion and understanding about the topic.

Make Pointers-It is a daunting task to write an essay inflow as sometimes we tend to lose our way of explaining and get off-topic, missing important details. Thinking about all points you want to discuss and then writing them down somewhere helps in covering everything you hoped to convey in your essay.

Once you’ve decided on a college essay topic you want to use, it’s time to buckle down and start fleshing out your essay. These six steps will help you transform a simple college essay topic into a full-fledged personal statement.

Step 1: Write Down All the Details

Once you’ve chosen a general topic to write about, get out a piece of paper and get to work on creating a list of all the key details you could include in your essay . These could be things such as the following:

  • Emotions you felt at the time
  • Names, places, and/or numbers
  • Dialogue, or what you or someone else said
  • A specific anecdote, example, or experience
  • Descriptions of how things looked, felt, or seemed

If you can only come up with a few details, then it’s probably best to revisit the list of college essay topics above and choose a different one that you can write more extensively on.

Good college essay topics are typically those that:

  • You remember well (so nothing that happened when you were really young)
  • You're excited to write about

In this case, you could mention a few specific times she tutored you and most strongly supported you in your studies.

There’s no one right way to approach your college essay, so play around to see what approaches might work well for the topic you’ve chosen.

If you’re really unsure about how to approach your essay, think about what part of your topic was or is most meaningful and memorable to you, and go from there.

  • Beginning: Don’t just spout off a ton of background information here—you want to hook your reader, so try to start in the middle of the action , such as with a meaningful conversation you had or a strong emotion you felt. It could also be a single anecdote if you plan to center your essay around a specific theme or idea.
  • Middle: Here’s where you start to flesh out what you’ve established in the opening. Provide more details about the experience (if a single anecdote) or delve into the various times your theme or idea became most important to you. Use imagery and sensory details to put the reader in your shoes.
  • End: It’s time to bring it all together. Finish describing the anecdote or theme your essay centers around and explain how it relates to you now , what you’ve learned or gained from it, and how it has influenced your goals.

Step 4: Write a Rough Draft

By now you should have all your major details and an outline for your essay written down; these two things will make it easy for you to convert your notes into a rough draft.

At this stage of the writing process, don’t worry too much about vocabulary or grammar and just focus on getting out all your ideas so that they form the general shape of an essay . It’s OK if you’re a little over the essay's word limit — as you edit, you’ll most likely make some cuts to irrelevant and ineffective parts anyway.

If at any point you get stuck and have no idea what to write, revisit steps 1-3 to see whether there are any important details or ideas you might be omitting or not elaborating on enough to get your overall point across to admissions officers.

Step 5: Edit, Revise, and Proofread

  • Sections that are too wordy and don’t say anything important
  • Irrelevant details that don’t enhance your essay or the point you're trying to make
  • Parts that seem to drag or that feel incredibly boring or redundant
  • Areas that are vague and unclear and would benefit from more detail
  • Phrases or sections that are awkwardly placed and should be moved around
  • Areas that feel unconvincing, inauthentic, or exaggerated

Start paying closer attention to your word choice/vocabulary and grammar at this time, too. It’s perfectly normal to edit and revise your college essay several times before asking for feedback, so keep working with it until you feel it’s pretty close to its final iteration.

This step will likely take the longest amount of time — at least several weeks, if not months — so really put effort into fixing up your essay. Once you’re satisfied, do a final proofread to ensure that it’s technically correct.

Step 6: Get Feedback and Tweak as Needed

After you’ve overhauled your rough draft and made it into a near-final draft, give your essay to somebody you trust , such as a teacher or parent, and have them look it over for technical errors and offer you feedback on its content and overall structure.

Use this feedback to make any last-minute changes or edits. If necessary, repeat steps 5 and 6. You want to be extra sure that your essay is perfect before you submit it to colleges!

Kabaddi is a regional sport that has existed for many generations in India. It is a physically demanding game played by seven players on each team. In the game, two teams stand opposite each other. A player from one team enters the opponent’s court while continuously saying “kabbadi”. If he touches one of the players and returns to his side, his team wins a point. The opposite team tries to stop him from going back till he runs out of breath and stops saying kabaddi. If they manage to stop him, he loses. I am very good at Kabaddi because I can run very fast before anyone can catch me. I am also able to hold my breath for a very long time. Kabaddi is my favourite because it is a challenging game and one has to be very strong and fast to win at it.

Hockey is my favourite game because it is challenging and also a lot of fun at the same time. It is the national game of India and is also played throughout the world. In the game, there are 11 players on each team. The teams have to chase a ball with their hockey sticks and score a goal. Along with playing hockey, I also love watching it on television. Although it is a national sport, hockey is not very common in the country. The popularity needs to increase, and more people should take up the game in schools and colleges.

Essay On ‘My Favourite is Game is Ludo’ 

Ludo is a popular board game among all children. I play it with my family and friends on weekends when we meet. Ludo is my favourite because I can play the game anytime and anywhere. The game is also available on mobile phones, but I like playing it on the gameboard when I am home. It requires at least two players and a maximum of four. In ludo, each player gets four tokens to play. The players roll the dice turn by turn and move ahead on the board accordingly. The first player who takes all his tokens to the finishing point wins. I also have a magnetic board and tokens for playing the game while travelling to a holiday destination. I like playing ludo with new people and making new friends.

I enjoy playing all ball games, but volleyball is my favourite of them all. The game has two teams standing on opposite sides of a court with a net in between. The first team serves the ball, and the opposite team returns it by hitting the ball with their wrist. If the ball reaches out of the court boundary or touches the net, the team that hits the ball loses. The game requires you to stay focused all the time, as even a small lapse of judgment can cost you the winning point. Unlike other games where you can take your eyes off the ball, you cannot do the same in volleyball until you have gained or lost a point. I like volleyball because it is all about strong team coordination. Everybody has to cooperate and work together to win.

Carrom is one of the best board games there is! It is a two-player game, but I love playing it alone too. I enjoy it because it requires strength, accuracy and swiftness while striking every move. The game is fun but challenging because it requires precise moves with an understanding of force and direction of the strike. It took me many months to learn how to shoot the striker properly and hit the tokens on the board. It takes a lot of time to become good at the game as we need a lot of practice to excel in it.

My favourite game is football. It is a popularly played sport throughout the world! The best teams from every country make it to the world cup, and people across the globe watch it with interest. I love football because there is a sense of freedom in playing the game. It is physically demanding as we have to run around the field to score a goal and simultaneously defend our side of the goal post. I play football every day in school with my classmates. I also play football with other children in my neighbourhood. It is a great way to make friends as you learn to play as a team.

Many of us dream of becoming great footballers someday. I always work on my skills because my coach says we can make it to the state or national level championships if we play well. Football is just as much about strategy and teamwork as it is about physical endurance. We also need great discipline and team cohesion to become a great football team.

When writing a long essay, students have to plan what they are about to write. For writing about a sport, they will need to give a few details about the game and why they like it in the rest of the essay. Here is a sample essay on badminton for students of class 3:

Badminton is a popular sport throughout the world. Many people worldwide watch it on TV, and many play it as a leisure sport. My interest in badminton started when I visited the sports centre in our locality. I was hooked on the sport soon after my first game. Unlike many other games that I play, I find that badminton is fun and challenging at the same time. The game requires two players. We need great stamina to move around the court to serve and return the shuttlecock by hitting it with the racket.

Badminton can be played by anyone as long as they love games. There are a few rules for playing the game in a competition or championship. You can choose to relax some of the rules and play just for fun as per your own plan. 

Badminton is a game that gives a full-body workout. You will have to constantly move around the court in the direction of the shuttlecock and hit it using your racket with the required force. Throughout the game, you exercise your legs, torso and upper body.

I am known as the best badminton player in my school because I practise in the evening every day. I have participated in many events at the regional and national levels, and won several championships. In recent years, badminton has also become popular in video games. My love for the sport makes me play that too, however, I prefer to play the sport on an actual court with a real opponent. The thrill of hitting the shuttlecock high into the air and running around to chase it is unmatched in a video game.

When writing an essay on their favourite game, your child will learn how to express themselves coherently in the written word. Writing about sports involves explaining the rules of a game, its unique rules, and several other aspects. Students will gather thorough knowledge about their favourite sport to write this essay. They will also improve their general knowledge while memorising facts like famous players of the sport.

Since playing games is a fun activity for children, they will enjoy writing this essay as they combine their knowledge, feelings and writing skills to compose an excellent essay.

My Students Are Submitting AI Papers. Here’s What I Do

Like many educators, I've been thrust into a brave new world of AI and modern teaching that I had not been trained for and to which appropriate responses aren't always clear

Last summer it finally happened to me: While reading a student essay in an introductory online college course at one of the universities at which I teach, I began to suspect not only that this student hadn’t written it but that no human mind had. In other words, it was the work of AI (artificial intelligence).

Like many educators across the globe, I was thrust into a brave new world of modern teaching that I had not been trained for and to which an appropriate response was unclear.

While I was aware of many effective AI detection tools , I had also heard horror stories of false positives from these same tools . My institution had recently announced a policy forbidding instructors from accusing students of using AI in their work. This gave me some institutional framework in which to operate, but I also did not want to reward a student with a positive grade for using a machine to do their writing for them.

I’ve since encountered similar situations many times. My AI radar has improved over time, and my understanding of the thorny questions around AI submissions has evolved.

Here’s how I handle these cases. Keep in mind that this is an ever-evolving process and appropriate responses are often institution, class, and student-specific.

1. Detecting AI: I Trust My Instincts to A Point

The first step in this process for me is to use common sense while reading student work. AI tools have gotten good at writing in one sense but tend to be bland – the written equivalent of white noise or smooth jazz. In addition, the student I first suspected submitted work that was markedly different from any they had submitted previously that term.

Since then, I’ve noticed a trend of my online students never submitting their own writing, so this change in tone and style is often unavailable as a comparison point.

On the flip side, I’ve become aware of a number of AI “tells” and have developed methods for detecting AI writing without technology . I’ve started using these more and more instead of AI writing detectors, which I’ve increasingly found to have too many false negatives, as there are now AI tools designed to read AI-written content and tweak it to throw off AI detectors.

But as good as I think my spidey sense for detecting AI writing is, it would definitely not stand up in a court of law, so I do not make AI accusations based on this. Instead, I use these suspicions as a conversation starter.

2. I Confer With Colleagues

I have written about a student who was falsely accused of using AI to generate papers , so I know I need to proceed cautiously to be fair to my students.

I typically reach out to a colleague in my department who oversees my work to share my concerns and any questionable work. If it still looks suspicious, we then bring in a superior for a third opinion and to discuss a course of action. This process helps protect the student by ensuring that I’m not misreading the situation somehow.

Talking with others also protects me as an untenured educator because it documents that I am acting in accordance with the university’s AI’s policies. This is especially important because at many institutions these policies are evolving and in some cases haven’t been formalized yet.

Conferring with colleagues remains one of the most important steps with each and every AI paper I encounter. It can be time-consuming for me and them, Al but I think it’s important, as my sense of what is and isn’t AI writing is not perfect and students deserve the benefit of having this process be conducted with some oversight.

3. I Try to Speak With The Student Without Accusing Them of Using AI 

My colleagues and I typically decide the best course of action is to try and speak with the student. During any conversation I ask how they conducted their research for the paper without mentioning AI or accusing them of anything.

I usually reach out via email and ask to talk with the student on the phone or via video call. If a student doesn’t respond, I email specific questions about the content of the paper, and say that I need these to be answered before I can grade their work.

At the same time, I also send class-wide emails that I have encountered suspected AI-use in the classroom. These announcements remind students that using AI writing for essays is against course and university policies.

Many times, the student will not respond, and I give the paper a zero.

I’ve encountered several instances of suspected AI use and most play out pretty much the same way. None of my students have been penalized for violating academic standards but none receive credit for work that they did not produce, which is my primary concern.

It’s a small, but I think important, victory for human writing.
