  • 140 Environmental Essay Topics

In any academic discipline, writing an essay on the environment can be a daunting task, no matter what the subject matter. Not only should students understand the complexities of the natural world, but they should also be able to communicate their ideas clearly in writing.

To combat the many challenges students can face when crafting an environmental essay, we’ve created this handy guide detailing how to write an environmental essay and even included 140 environmental essay topics to help get you started.

What Is an Environmental Essay?

An environmental essay is a type of paper where a student must choose a topic related to the environment and present an argument, opinion, or point of view about it. The primary purpose of this type of essay is to educate readers on a given issue and raise awareness about potential solutions.

How to Write an Environmental Essay: A Step-By-Step Guide

Step 1: choose an essay topic.

Before you can start writing your environmental essay, you need to choose a topic. Writing this type of paper may appear simple, but finding the right topic can be the most difficult part of the process. You’ll want to choose a topic that matches the essay format to ensure that the writing process is as smooth as possible.

For example, if you are tasked with writing an argumentative essay on a particular environmental issue, make sure that your topic can be argued. Avoid choosing a topic that is too broad or too specific, as this can make it challenging to develop a clear thesis statement and support your argument.

If your environmental essay is a compare and contrast essay, you’ll want to choose two topics that can be effectively compared and contrasted. And if your essay is a cause and effect essay, make sure that your topic focuses on causes or effects (or both) related to an environmental issue.

Step 2: Develop a Thesis Statement

Once you’ve chosen your essay topic, it’s time to develop a thesis statement. This is a sentence (or two) that summarizes your paper’s central argument. Specificity and focus are the hallmarks of a well-crafted thesis statement. In other words, it should be open to discussion and disagreement.

For example, a weak thesis statement might be something like:

“The environment is important.”

While this statement is true, it’s too general to be the focus of an entire essay. A stronger thesis statement might be:

“It’s time to stop polluting and other activities that harm the environment.”

This is a well-reasoned statement that expresses a firm opinion on the subject. It’s a good topic for an argumentative essay because it’s open to debate.

Step 3: Do Your Research

Now that you have a thesis statement, it’s time to do your research. This will involve finding sources (such as books, articles, and websites) that support your argument. When taking notes from your sources, be sure to write down the author, title, and publication date for each one. This will make it easier to create your Works Cited page later on.

As you’re doing your research, keep your essay format in mind. For example, if you are writing a five-paragraph essay, make sure that you have enough evidence to support your thesis statement and fill out each of the three body paragraphs.

Step 4: Write a Draft

Now it’s time to start writing your first draft. Begin by creating an outline that will help you organize your thoughts and ideas. Then, as you flesh out paragraphs from your outline, keep your audience in mind and make sure that your argument is clear and easy to follow.

Your draft should include an introduction, ideas for each body paragraph, and a conclusion. It is important to include your thesis statement in your introduction and to restate it in your conclusion.

Keep in mind that each body paragraph will always need a clear and interesting topic sentence, as well as a transition sentence that sums up the section. The following are some good examples of sentences that begin or transition:

“Even though many people do not consider the environment to be important, it is vital to our continued existence. It is impossible to survive without a healthy environment.

In order to see this, you can look at the…”

“Humans are clearly causing harm to the environment, but what are the root causes of this? I believe that the most important issue is….”

“We can all see the effects of environmental degradation, but persuading people to alter their behavior is a difficult task. While the…”

Each of these sentences offers a clear and concise argument that can be explored in more depth in the body paragraphs.

Step 5: Edit and Proofread

After writing your essay, it’s time to edit and proofread it. This is the process of making sure that there are no errors in your grammar or spelling. It’s also a good idea to read your essay aloud to make sure that it flows smoothly.

With the helpful guide above detailing the process of creating an environmental essay, you should now have no trouble writing on your topic of choice. However, if you’re still struggling to find the perfect topic, consider one of the following 140 environmental essay topics.

Sample Answer

The overconsumption of fossil fuels has become a major topic of concern recently. Some people suggest that increasing the fuel price can be the solution to cope with environmental issues.  Personally, I believe that other measures should also be given equal consideration.

Firstly, increasing fuel expenses cannot minimise the global dependence on fuel. It should be first noted that even when the price of fuel increases significantly, people still cannot cut down the tremendous demand for petrol at once. For example, in daily life, people still need to use their cars despite the fluctuation in the petrol price. Another clear reason is that petrol is also intended for other applications in manufacturing industries and agricultural purposes. If the price of fuel increases, the national economy could suffer many unfavourable consequences.

When it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, some measures should be taken to mitigate the problems of overconsuming fuel. The most practical measure at the moment is to reduce the demand for resources in daily activities like travelling or production.  This can be done by encouraging people to turn to mass-producing energy-efficient products like hybrid cars or implementing new saving energy technology in manufacturing. Besides, the most sustainable solution is to lower the reliance on fuel by taking advantage of alternative resources. Wind and tidal power in the Netherlands, nuclear power in Japan, and solar power in the United States have all proven their efficiency in energy in energy production. These could be employed in other parts of the world to minimise global dependence on fossil fuels .

All existing data above shows that only increases the fuel price will not reduce the global warming effects. Some strong alternative measures need to be implemented to tackle this situation.

Useful expressions:

  • Tremendous (adj.) very great in amount or level, or extremely good.
  • Mass-produce (v.) to produce a lot of goods cheaply using machines in a factory.
  • Energy-efficient (adj.) using little electricity, gas, etc.
  • Hybrid (adj.) (also hybrid car) a vehicle with an engine that uses both petrol and another type of energy, usually electricity.
  • Implement (v.) to start using a plan or system.
  • Solar power: energy from the Sun.
  • Fossil fuel: fuels, such as gas, coal, and oil, that were formed underground from plant and animal remains millions of years ago.

Overconsumption of fuel has been prevalent over the last few decades as the uncontrolled activity has led to environmental hazard world widely. As a remedy, fuel prices should be raised based on someone’s opinion to curb worldwide environmental degradation. Based on my viewpoint, I partially consider this alternative as other measures should be given equal consideration.

From the past generation until present, fuel is a necessity as its consumption is spanning widely from transportation industry to manufacturing or service industry. To its details, the electricity consumption is heavily associated with the demand of fuel. Also, every person needs petrol to fuel one’s mode of transportation. Without fuel, the transportation vehicles cannot function properly. Therefore, fuel is an indispensable thing that most people starve for in terms of economic perspectives. The decrease supply of fuel certainly dampens the global economy severely due to heavy dependence on fuels to keep various industries on run. Hence, the sole rise in fuel prices just palliates the environmental issues, but more heavy negative consequences will arise.

As fuel dependence can’t be entirely eradicated, the other fuel alternatives should be discovered proactively to reduce the reliance on fuels in reducing greenhouse gases emission. For instance, the use of renewable energy must be scaled up effectively to meet the population demand besides preserving environmental sustainability. In Japan, the government encourages the solar projects expansion to replace fuel as major source of electricity generation. To achieve that, the private and government sectors should undertake coordinated effort in commercialising the renewable energy market. Besides, the mass-producing electric vehicles will significantly reduce the use of non-renewable fuels in supercharging the vehicles which emit less poisonous gases into atmosphere. Meanwhile, the legislators can put a cap on the price of electric cars to enhance public affordability to purchase environmental-friendly cars.

In a nutshell, other measures should be discovered such as promotion of renewable energy use in cost-competitive way apart from escalating the fuel prices. The progressive environmental efforts should be implemented in holistic ways to relieve environmental risk.

Hi IELTSMaterial, I’d like to submit my essay of the above topic for evaluation. I’d like to know my band score if this was an IELTS test and feedbacks. Thanks for helping!

Essay: According to some raising the charge of fuel is an optimal way to resolve worldwide environmental issues. In my opinion, I disagree that this is the most excellent way to improve the environment, as there are still other techniques that achieve the same or even better results than this solution. A good reason to assume that this is not the best answer for pollution problems is that severe actions take a large responsibility for contamination that this measure is unable to prevent. One of the notorious causes of environmental troubles is deforestation, and fluctuating the price of fuel will not oscillate any operations of clearing the forested land, which means that this will also not develop any positivities to the environment. When it comes to resolving environmental issues, there are other measures that should be considered. One of the clearest answers in my belief is to replace disposal items with reusable items. As plastic accounts for an extensive amount of time to dissolve, even in a matter of centuries, we should recycle these items to inhibit the superabundance of redundant offal into the ocean, ambiance, and numerous other essential components of the environment that we are supplying unnecessary refuses out of it. In conclusion, operating activity of augmenting the cost of fuel is not a perfect movement to conserve the environment, instead, we ought to be concentrating on crucial actions that will ameliorate environmental problems such as implementing other procedures that are more beneficial in order to prevent serious contamination.

There is no doubt that the use of fuel has had a devastating impact on our environment and unless serious measures are taken we might never be able to save what we still have. That is why I believe that the most effective method to save nature is to increase fuel prices for the reasons that I will be discussing. To begin with, humans are in nature greedy beings, their own benefit will come before any other consideration. This means that if gas is an available and cheap source of energy to run their cars they will keep using it regardless of what harm it might cause. Moreover, many people believe that they will only live for some time on this planet before dying so it does not suite them to make changes that can cause them inconveniences for the benefit of future generations that do not affect them in any way. Another reason to consider is available data that we already have. It has been shown that the best motive to stop an unwanted behavior is to make it expensive. The most prominent example is that of smoking. The number of smokers in countries that made cigarettes more expensive has dropped significantly compared to countries where prices stayed the same. Therefore, if the same concept can be applied to fuel people will be forced to find other means that are less expensive namely renewables. In conclusion, it is not enough to rely on the conscious of people to help save our environment, governments must have the main role by making fuel an undesirable option, one way to do that is by making it financially repelling. However, it is still important to provide fuel substitutes that will make people happy for the plan to work out.

It’s often argued that the most effective way in order to tackle traffic and pollution problems is rising the cost of petrol . I completely agree that this would be the best way to approach these issues.

Firstly,by increasing the price of petrol, the number of people who use public transportation would experience a significant growth . Hence there would be less cars in the streets or highways then less traffic jams would be seen . Moreover, the amount of carbon dioxide or other toxic gasses in the in the air would be decreased.

Having said this, it must also be said that some associations may not spend as much time driving outside as before in order to save more money. For instead, there are some people who are juggling their demands and their inadequate salaries . Therefore they make every endeavour which would help them lessen their expenses.

Another point to consider can be replacing our existing vehicles by electronic ones which could be powered by a renewable power that produces zero emissions . The plan is simple but revolutionary. It starts with the installation of a home charge point , and through this, the vehicle will be plugged into the electricity grid whenever it is in the garage.

Last but not least point would be about evolving the efficient facilities or more essential than that how safe and hygien are our public transportation. This measure also have a decisive impact on the number of people who would have a tendency to use public transportation. For example, if people be ensured that the factors they are searching for ideal transporting is available while using subway they may be more tempted to buy a ticket for it .

In conclusion, I strongly agree that a rise in the price of petrol would solve many kinds of pollution and also traffic. I associate the practicality of this solution with more use of public transportation and eliminating extra or unnecessary transfers . On the other hand, producing electronic vehicles and advancing public transportation’s features are other operable solutions in order to deal with such problems.

In recent times, environmental problems have always been a huge concern to a great proportion of people in many societies. There is a school of thought that the government ought to increase the price of fuel for cars and other vehicles to solve environmental issues. From my own perspective, it is a useful measure, but other measures might be more effective. On the one hand, there were many positive results if the government escalated the expense of fuel for many vehicles like cars or motorbikes. First and foremost, it could restrict the number of people using these private vehicles. Secondly, the money raised could be used to improve the quality of public transport like buses or trains. The public transport would be invested to upgrade and expand, as people would still need to go to school, go to the company, or go to the supermarket, for instance. Both these measures could cut down on carbon emissions from vehicles and help to reduce the greenhouse effect and evenly, global warming. On the other hand, while increasing the price of fuel for many private vehicles would be a useful measure, the government could adopt transport policies which would be more effective for the long term. The government could invest in the quality of public transports and encourage people to use them. Besides that, the government could introduce some free transports that support people having a low income. These measures would improve the air quality in the city and reduce the pollutants from private transports and also decrease the ability of global warming.

To conclude, the rise in the cost of fuels for vehicles would be a useful measure, although there were other ways to solve the environmental problems.

Increasing fuel price is the most effective way to solve environmental degradation globally. While there are certainly valid arguments to support this, I believe that this is not the solution to this problem. This paper is going to discuss my reasons.

Supporters of this argument claim that cars are the major cause of environmental degradation. Thus, raising petrol price would reduce pollution as the number of vehicles on the road would decrease. Nonetheless, I would contend that, hiking the price of fuel is not going affect fuel consumption. This is going to affect only low income earners as a huge part of their income would be used to fuel their cars. People with disposable income would not be affected as they would still be able to afford it. This can be seen in Japan where the number of car users remained the same after the hike in the price of petrol. Therefore, it is obvious that a hike in fuel price is not going to affect the number of automobiles on the road.

Furthermore, increasing the cost of fossil fuels is not a feasible solution as there are no alternatives for the society. Rather than increase the price of fuel the government should focus on making public transport better. For instance, they can create good roads, maintain public buses and make bus fares cheap in order to attract more people to use public transport. Thus, a substitute should be created for people rather than raising the cost of fossil fuels.

In conclusion, I once again reaffirm my position that making fossil fuels more costly is not the best solution to environmental issues worldwide because of its effect on a certain section of the society and the absence of better alternatives.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) writing section is a 1-hour test that comprises two questions: task 1 and task 2, which assess your vocabulary, grammar, word count, collocations, and ability to construct complex sentences with moderation and without repetition.

Table of Contents

To begin, it is pivotal to understand that the IELTS essay topics vary for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Tasks. In Task 1 of IELTS Academic, you must write a report on a graph, diagram or chart, whereas, for IELTS General Training Task 1, you must write a letter. Task 2 of the General and Academic modules is essay writing; while the topics for essays in both modules may differ, the essay writing strategy remains the same.

Examiners use the following criteria to calculate Academic IELTS Writing Task 1 and Task 2 scores: Task Achievement, Task Response, Coherence, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Lexical Resource.

IELTS Writing Task 2 for Academic

The IELTS Academic Writing section consists of two tasks that must be completed in one hour:

Writing Task 1

In Task 1, you are assigned a graph, visual information, table or chart, which you are required to describe in your own words. You must write a report in 150 words, accurately describing what the information in the graph or picture represents. The IELTS writing task 1 marking criteria accounts for 33% of the total IELTS writing evaluation score, and you should try to finish this part in 20 minutes or less because IELTS writing task 2 is more difficult and will take at least 40 minutes to complete.

170 Opinion Essay Topics to Choose in 2023 for Your Writings

  • by Lesley V.
  • August 16, 2023 November 10, 2023

Whether in high school or college, opinion writing prompts will follow you. This essay type is a must to master:

Teachers will assign oped papers to check your critical thinking skills. They want to ensure you know how to build arguments and prove your point of view. Academic writing skills are also here: Opinion essays have a structure (1) to follow.

In this article, you’ll find a massive list of good opinion essay topics and ideas to consider for your work. All are strong, divided by subject, and with actionable writing tips to get an A+ for your piece.

What Is an Opinion Essay?

Op-ed essays are formal, representing an author’s personal take on a specific subject. They aren’t about college work only. You could see op-ed posts on social media or journalistic articles in newspapers.

In academia, you’ll also need to mention the opposite point of view in opinion essays. The final paragraph before a conclusion should contain counterarguments (for a fuller discussion).

How to Choose Good Opinion Essay Topics

While teachers can assign a topic for op-ed writing, college students often have freedom of choice here. And that’s where a challenge comes in:

How to choose a good opinion essay topic? How to ensure it’s controversial enough to trigger a discussion? Is it possible to know of it gives you enough argumentation and evidence to support your point?

What is a Good Topic for an Opinion Paper?

Good opinion writing topics have 3 specific characteristics:

  • They allow you to develop a strong thesis statement (2).
  • You can find enough facts to support your point: examples, reliable sources, quotes, etc.
  • They have opposite viewpoints . Avoid topics presenting the ultimate truth: There’s nothing to discuss there.

How to Choose Your Perfect Opinion Writing Prompt?

Opinion essay topics are many. Follow these 5 steps when choosing yours:

  • Recheck the requirements. How long should your essay be? Do you need to cover a single issue or discuss a few? Depending on the prompt, not all topics may appear to be appropriate.
  • Consider the audience. Who’ll read your paper? Do you write for everyone or a specific group? Choose topics that are relevant and interesting to whom you’ll write.
  • Remember about your interests, too. Consider issues of your knowledge and passion. Write about something bothering or exciting you: Such opinion essay topics are easier to craft.
  • Recheck the essay’s purpose. Will it educate, persuade, or entertain readers? It can help you narrow down the topic choices.
  • Do pre-research. Check if you can find enough sources with reliable information on your chosen topic. Will you have evidence to support your point if writing on this?

Opinion Essay Writing Tips: Start With Easy Prompts

When choosing opinion essay topics, remember you’ll need to structure your paper on it. It’s an academic paper, so please follow the format requirements . Also, you’ll need to cover all the questions related to your chosen topic.

The below writing tips will help ensure you’ve chosen a proper op-ed idea for your essay:

  • Brainstorm several topics before writing. Which one does meet the prompt’s requirements best?
  • Research . Are there other people investigating and discussing your chosen issue? Will you have enough supporting evidence to use throughout the paper?
  • Choose a side . What point of view will you support about the topic?
  • Develop a strong thesis and think of arguments you’ll use to prove it.
  • Remember to mention an opposite viewpoint. What counterarguments do your opponents have? Choose controversial topics, open to discussions.

20 Opinion Topics to Practice Your Writing Skills

Below are 20 elementary topics teachers assign for 5th-grade or for middle school students. They are easy opinion essay topics to practice writing. Also, they are great to consider when you have no idea what to write about in your piece:

Opinion Essay Topics: Choose Yours And Get A+

So, now you have them: 170 topics for opinion writing! Choose yours:

  • Consider the prompt requirements and the target audience of your paper.
  • Check if you have enough arguments and evidence to state and support a thesis in the paper.
  • Choose a topic that interests you but with counterarguments to add to a paper for discussion.

Which opinion essay topics from the list above have you already covered? And which one would you choose for your next paper or article?

Remember the putrid smell of tons of rotting fish in Tampa Bay after that red tide outbreak three years ago? Imagine avoiding that stench, the environmental damage and the millions of taxpayer dollars spent on the clean-up altogether. What would that be worth?

In our gut, we want to make polluters pay. But what if we gave businesses tax incentives not to pollute in the first place? That could save money and protect the environment.

Now, let’s be clear. Red tide, which set off that massive fish kill, is a naturally occurring bloom of the algae Karenia brevis. However, the way we pollute our waters — especially fertilizer run-off — can make the blooms far worse. And that’s where industrial-scale pollution comes in. Who can forget the 215 million gallons of wastewater pumped into Tampa Bay almost exactly three years ago around Piney Point? It was from the site of an old fertilizer plant where a lagoon was in danger of breaching. That level of pollution equals more than 2½ million bathtubs of water and 80,000 bags of fertilizer.

It’s hard to prove definitively that this pollution magnified the red tide outbreaks, but there is common sense. As Tampa Bay Estuary Program executive director Ed Sherwood told the Times, it “doesn’t take much to put two and two together.”

Tampa Bay is a fast-growing region with a population and a business climate that are both booming. But growth and protecting the waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico need not be at odds. Instead, the way we frame the relationship between business and environmental protection needs to change. Expensive, ineffective, bureaucratic environmental policy is not the only option. Florida legislators should back budget-friendly, business-friendly policy to encourage economic growth that supports environmental protection.

The Legislature already has a structure in place to implement tax breaks as a reward for pro-environment business behavior. Florida’s Brownfields Redevelopment Program offers businesses a tax credit for up to 50% of the cost of rehabilitating and developing brownfields. Since it was approved by the Florida Legislature in 1997, the Brownfields Program has resulted in 219 cleaned brownfield sites, $454 million invested in cleanup and development and 16,099 net new direct jobs.

A similar strategy to combat water pollution should provide tax credits for proactively reducing pollution output. After working with local environmental scientists and ecological economists to develop eco-friendly business practices, industries would be eligible for tax credits through water testing requirements and occasional city oversight.

Legislators should support a proactive, business-friendly solution to water pollution, since it would reduce state spending and lower business taxes. Gov. Ron DeSantis rejected Tampa’s $2.5 million proposal to improve wastewater management last June citing fiscal restraint and state debt reduction. However, in the wake of the Piney Point disaster, DeSantis had allocated $15.4 million to assist with pollution cleanup.

To avoid state spending on cleanup, the tax cuts would reduce initial pollution output and the likelihood of environmental disasters. An enlightened plan like this could save the environment and tax dollars. It’s time to give it a try.
