Thesis Executive Summaries

The thesis is the culmination of the program where participants apply theories learned in their master’s in an academic research paper. Executive summaries of a selection of our theses are highlighted here and represent the raw material developed by students as part of the thesis required for their Swiss Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Logistics and Management Program MASHLM. Participants in MASHLM are active professionals working with logistics, operations, and management in the humanitarian sector and they often implement the results of their theses in their place of work. We embrace this practice of applied research, and support participants and alumni in furthering their work in improving humanitarian conditions in the developing world.

In support of the principle of Open Access, we aim to maximize the visibility and availability of the executive summaries of our theses which are based on real-life situations in humanitarian logistics and operations across a variety of contexts, such as migration, military conflicts, emergency operations, negotiations, fundraising, stakeholder coordination, environmental impact, and ICT.

We believe that the study of Humanitarian Operations has a growing role in the relationship of organizations, companies, and governments with the public, between and within organizations. There are many tools such as our theses that are available to facilitate access, analyze and practice humanitarian operations, logistics and management at an advanced and professional level

Providing help to people in need is the responsibility of society and does not exclude logistical issues. Especially in this area of logistics research, a strong practical orientation is of great importance. Case study research is often seen as a suitable instrument to bridge the gap between research and practice and is therefore particularly recommended. However, since the contextual influences in humanitarian operations are very diverse, this research method is exposed to specific challenges. There is a lack of a systematic consideration of these challenges and a comprehensive guideline for researchers. Therefore, this chapter aims at systematically identifying and categorizing the challenges in conducting case study research in the context of humanitarian logistics. Practical recommendations for the application of this research method will be developed to overcome these obstacles. To achieve the research objectives, a mixed-method approach was chosen. First, a systematic literature review was carried out. In addition, six interviews with experts were conducted, all of whom have extensive experience in the field of case study research in the context of humanitarian logistics. The recommendations for action are based on a qualitative and deductive methodology. The results of the study show that four characteristics of humanitarian logistics represent unique challenges for case study research and must therefore be considered particularly: the dynamic environment, the political as well as the international context, and the general complexity.

How to choose a dissertation topic in international disaster management, humanitarian response and global health.

The start of the new academic year is upon us. For those of you entering your final year of your undergraduate degree, dissertations will be making its presence felt. For those of you embarking on a postgraduate Master’s degree, you will know that it won’t be long before discussions on the dissertation start to filter into your chats with others in your cohort.

The dissertation forms a major part of your degree in the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute. Yet, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the topics covered during all our degrees, students often find it hard to choose a topic. By the end of your second year in the undergraduate programme, or end of your first semester as a postgraduate, you will have a good idea which of HCRI’s key themes interest you more; but this still might not lead you to a specific dissertation topic. At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, the dissertation in HCRI should be a critical discussion of a relatively narrow research topic. Furthermore, the dissertation process should allow you to conduct a thorough and sustained piece of research, demonstrating intellectual independence. At undergraduate level, you should show you have an awareness of the relationship between theoretical frameworks, methods and practice, and develop the confidence to express your scholarly opinion in an informed manner. At postgraduate level, you should do all of the above and, in addition, have the opportunity to seek new research findings which add to the existing body of knowledge on your topic. Your choice of subject matter impacts greatly on your ability to achieve these learning outcomes.

There is no right or wrong way to choose your dissertation topic. Personally, I read an interesting chapter on taxation in Uganda (yes, you heard right, ‘taxation’ and ‘interesting’ in the same sentence!).

This led me down a rabbit hole of investigating the relationship between taxation and state-building, which resulted in me jumping feet first into the literature on state formation. The result was a Master’s dissertation looking at processes of state formation in Uganda. This blog post provides you with five pointers to help you overcome the difficulty of choosing the right topic.

Students are often told to think about their favourite topic that they have studied in their previous modules and use this as a starter for their project. This is indeed a good idea. However, some of you may find there were too many topics you really enjoyed; others may feel that nothing has spiked their interest yet. So, let’s turn this idea on its head. Imagine you had my job as Programme Director for your degree. You have been allowed by the School to devise one new module aimed at third-year undergraduate or postgraduate level. What would this module be called? Write an introduction to that module, along with the intended learning outcomes. Then think about the individual lectures (10 or so) for the module – what would the titles be? Once you have a rough plan, send it through to me, and we’ll pop it in the programme structure for next year…only joking! Instead, select the lecture you would want to design first. This should give you a good indication of the topic you have always wanted to learn more about and would get excited spending day after day reading and writing on.

Protecting women under the international humanitarian law: a study of the social, cultural, and political conditions in iraq and palestine that have an adverse affect on women.

This doctoral dissertation examines and studies the protection of women rights under International Humanitarian Law, (also “IHL”) within the context of the social, cultural and political and political conditions with particular reference to the women of Iraq and Palestine. Women in these two countries have suffered unparalleled difficulties that have been afflicted upon them by conditions of war. For a long period in the history of those countries, women as indispensable managers of their families have had to contend with varying challenges necessitating protection under international humanitarian law. This is even more required during periods of war and armed conflicts.

Chapter I opens with a brief definition of International Humanitarian Law, of which there are at least a half dozen working definitions; thereafter follows, a short discussion of each of several documents that have relevance to international humanitarian law. These include one of the oldest documents known. It was actually a stone slab, into which was chiseled several hundred codes pertaining to and governing the citizens of ancient Babylon. Next we shall go to ancient India and consider a volume of her most ancient texts: the Laws of Manu, over 2500 years old; this text regulated affairs of domestic, social and religious life, among many other facets of life in India. Then, we get to the Christian era, where the most avid teachers of a new religion taught having respect for others as if they were your sister or brother. This chapter also presents an overview of early Islamic Law, as well as, the Magna Carta, the latter being a giant step forward for humanitarian concerns in Western Europe. Chapter I concludes with a survey of the all-important Hague and Geneva Conventions, the Additional Protocols to those four Conventions, and finally the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Chapter One provides the background against which we consider the rights of women, and to some extent, civilians, whether man, woman, or child.

Chapter II provides a brief descriptive survey of general protection of civilian women. It provides case examples of Iraqi and Palestinian women prisoners; discusses general protection of civilian women under the 1977 First Additional Protocol, principles of protection of civilian women under the Four Geneva Accords, the Additional Protocols and the United Nations, and introduces the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against women, 1979, as well as the 1995 Peking Declaration and Women’s Special Protocol.

Chapter III highlights the special protection for women as prisoners of war, and during various military operations. The concerns here change depending on whether women are only civilians, or are participating in military operations, which include the very controversial suicide bombing. This chapter delves into several areas of research, among them, treatment of detained and jailed women. Chapter IV continues with discussion of protecting women from capital punishment, and most particularly, the prohibition of capital punishment against pregnant women, women with children, and children themselves.

Chapter V discusses other protections of women, including special aid and assistance rights commensurate to their needs based on their gender. This chapter discusses negative and positive provisions. The negative provisions state what not to do, such as carry out military attacks on women and other civilians, and the positive state what should be done; such as provide adequate food, water, and shelter.

Chapter VI discusses protecting women from the harms of military combat. The chapter points to the relevant international agreements that list and provide for protections against listed war crimes. Here we explore the more common convention base remedies, which include compensation, as they pertain to those crimes, and other misbehavior. This chapter also explores national agreements designed to help women in both Iraq and Palestine. In Chapter VII we take a look at the current conditions that women in Iraq have been enduring for the past fifty years, and more so during the past thirty years, which have been three decades of war along the Persian Gulf. We shall find that the consequences of those wars have been emotionally, psychologically and spiritually devastating upon the Iraqi women. In Chapter VIII, the final section, we retrace our steps through the previous seven chapters, highlighting the main themes. Here, we shall set out recommendations for the International Law, and more general recommendations for the International Law, as well.Towards this end, we suggest ways in which the international community might influence the proper treatment of women, generally in the direction of greater peace despite likely constraints on the resources available for exerting such influence. Knowing that leaders have not been able to shoulder this burden of protecting women around the world, we conclude with an appeal to all to take part in the endeavor of protecting women around the world.

Research on the entangled history of humanitarianism and human rights.

Research Topics, Part 1: Humanitarianism and Intervention

One aim of our blog is to identify, present, discuss and exchange ideas about emerging research topics in the prospering field of the history of humanitarianism and human rights. Today I would like to point to one of these new research topics, namely “ Humanitarianism and Intervention” .

In my current research project ‘In the cause of humanity’ here at the IEG Mainz ( http://www.ieg-mainz.de/likecms/media/public/personen/Projekt_Klose.pdf ) I work about various humanitarian interventions in the 19th century and their impact to an early history of the development of international humanitarian norms. In my eyes it is important to historicize the phenomena of enforcing humanitarian norms by military means and to bridge the experiences of various centuries of “enforcing humanity”. For instance the conference “The Emergence of Humanitarian Intervention. Concepts and Practices in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries.” , which I have organized in October 2012 at the Historischen Kolleg in Munich, sought to investigate the historical emergence of humanitarian intervention in the 19 th and 20 th centuries. Acknowledging the multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary character of the topic, the conference brought together a group of international experts from different disciplines such as international law, sociology, political science, and history, thus emphasizing the enrichment of research from different perspectives and various approaches.

The four leading themes and questions of the conference were:

Which concepts, actors, and practices of humanitarian intervention can be identified in the 19 th and 20 th centuries?
Where are the philosophical and legal origins of enforcing humanitarian norms by military means?
Which role does the mobilization of public opinion play in the decision for and against humanitarian intervention?
What is the relationship between the humanitarian justification to protect and the interest of power politics to interfere in the sovereign rights of states? What chances and risks are implied in the concept of humanitarian intervention?

Research Ideas for the Humanitarian Student

The world we live in is rife with a plethora of issues that would make an interesting and thoughtful read. Below is a list of research ideas that will dazzle your teacher and prove a worthwhile and beneficial experience for you:

1. Compare/contrast poverty reduction strategies of U.S. government foreign-aid programs to those of other donor countries, focusing on the end goals of such programs. For example, do the programs aim to increase income? Or, instead, do they focus on improving quality of life? At the end of your school report, analyze the pros and cons of such strategies and develop your own strategy for how you think poverty should be addressed.

2. Explore the structure and strategies of U.S. based non-profit organizations working to reduce global poverty . What do their programs focus on? Who are their top donors? How do they raise funds? Where are their funds allocated? What are their milestones/achievements?

3. The UN General Assembly designation of February 20 th as the “World Day of Social Justice.” First explore and analyze the concept of social justice. Then specifically delve into the World Day of Social Justice by answering the questions: What is the purpose of this day? How/why was it developed? What are its achievements?

4. With one more year left until the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target date, discuss what the MDGs are, as well as the various efforts made so far by UN member nations and global development institutions toward achieving the MDGs.

5. Research poverty reduction measures taken by your local elected representatives. How often do they focus on poverty related issues? How much poverty related legislation have they drafted or co-sponsored? Discuss what their primary focus is and why. How can a constituent make poverty a priority for them?

Students should view school reports as a challenge and an opportunity to dig deeper into topics that interest them. The issue of global poverty spans many fields that are ripe with information for critical analysis. Due to the unpredictable nature of sudden onset disasters the humans are often caught with surprise so are the humanitarian relief organizations. In order to quickly react to the emergencies, supply chain networks are built instantly by the actors of the relief management. Parallel to this process, need assessment is started with the help of local experts which also confirm that the response cannot be lingered on due a delay in need assessment. After wards the supply chain structure needs to be changed once the right information is gathered by the passage of time. This is not all, actually the situation of the disaster prone area and people also changes by that time which always brings a challenging scenario for humanitarian relief actors to develop the supply chain design with flexibility.Primary focus of this paper is to define right supply chain designs for disaster response and post disaster phases in humanitarian relief.
