New Computers & CAD software for DCG Rooms
Minister for Education and Skills announces €7m in grants to 450 post-primary schools to support implementation of DCG programme.
Following a public procurement competition, a contract for CAD Software for Schools was awarded to Solid Solutions Ireland, the national reseller of Dassault Systemes SolidWorks Corporation 3D Software, SOLIDWORKS, for the next six years. The Department of Education and Skills (DES) purchased this software directly following a procurement process involving representatives from the DES and various partner bodies. “SOLIDWORKS is a worldwide industry leader in parametric CAD software and today’s announcement will ensure that Irish students will remain at the cutting edge of design technology.” The drawdown facility for computers has been put in place by the procurement committee with the support of the Office of Government Procurement. The computers are specially customised and tested to meet the demands of running SOLIDWORKS in a classroom environment. Fujitsu Ireland, with its partners Smart Schools and Total Import Solutions, are supplying the Desktop computers. The Notebook Computers are being supplied by PC Peripherals.
The Minister said: “DCG continues to grow in schools. In 2012, 5,319 candidates sat the Leaving Certificate Examination, with the predicted 2015 figure standing at 5,705. The allocated funding has been increased accordingly and will ensure that this important subject continues to go from strength to strength. Letters are being issued to schools detailing the amount of money being allocated.
A professional development programme for the new CAD software is currently being formulated by the Professional Development Service for Teachers for autumn 2015, and details will be sent to schools. The first phase of support will involve online tutorials and supporting web resources. Phase two will include national workshops.

What is DCG?
Design and Communication Graphics is a follow on subject from Junior Cycle Graphics. It is assessed in the following two areas:
1. Student Assignment 40%
2. Terminal Exam 60%
Graphics provides students with the opportunity for visualizing and comprehending information presented verbally or graphically. Problem solving and creative thinking skills are developed through the analysis and solution of both 2D 3D graphics. Graphics and design are communicated using freehand sketching skills, traditional draughting equipment and CAD. There is a great emphasis in the Leaving Certificate course on comprehension, analysis and problem solving. In simple terms you must be able to understand what has to be done, analyse how you are going to approach it and then proceed to solve the problem. It is a very suitable subject for either architecture or engineering it is regarded as a useful asset if you are thinking of a technical course. It is recommended that you have completed Junior Cert Technical Graphics prior to picking DCG for senior cycle. If you are interested in selecting DCG without completing Junior Cert TG, discuss this with your DCG teacher.
Student Assignment
Every year 6th year DCG students are given a brief in the third week of September. The project is generally due the 2nd week of January. Each student must submit 14 A3 pages, including sketching, research, SolidWorks drawings, working drawings, design concept sketches etc. This project amounts to 40% of the coursework. The brief changes every year.2022

Terminal Exam
The terminal exam is a weighting of 60% of the overall assessment. This is a board drawing exam similar to that of Junior Cert TG. In the exam you will be assessed on your knowledge and understanding of the following topics covered of the two years.
