The New Year’s Resolutions That Changed Your Lives

We asked about the goals and intentions you set for yourselves. Here are some of our favorites.

Photo illustration of various collaged elements that include part of a January calendar, a hand writing in a notebook, a person looking at water, a person walking and a sun.

By Jancee Dunn

I used to make New Year’s resolutions that unraveled by the end of January — like my big plan to get my finances in order at the start of 2019 (and 2020, and 2021). But last year, after several of my friends lost parents, I made a resolution that I’ve been able to keep.

I decided to check in with these friends about the small but important moments in their lives.

One had told me that her mother was the only person who followed up on the little things by asking: How was your doctor’s appointment? Is your dog feeling any better? How did that cookie recipe turn out?

So now I jot down reminders to ask about a friend’s test results or how their kid did in the school play. I’ve also gently prodded them to make medical appointments.

These everyday exchanges have shifted our friendships into something far deeper, making me feel as if my friends are more like family. I realized that we had often communicated only the headlines of our lives — a new job, a big breakup — but that the mundane details add more texture to our bonds. Nothing says “I see you, and I’m paying attention” more than when a friend texts to ask if your basement is still flooded.

Three weeks ago, I asked readers whether they had made any New Year’s resolutions that changed their lives. Here are some of my favorites.

Quotes have been edited for clarity and length.

This year, I decided to try one activity: Every night a calendar pop-up reminds me to record a “joy note,” and I enter one or more things that gave me joy during the day.

At the end of 2023, I will have 365 or more reminders of things that gave me joy. No one else will see my notes, but I will always have them as a record to inspire me. — Denise Abboud, Cleveland

One New Year’s Eve at work, after picking up three or four pens that didn’t write, I jokingly told a co-worker, “This year, I am making one doable resolution: If a pen is dead, throw it away immediately.”

My resolution changed from pens to everything: If it is no longer useful to me, I will discard it, recycle it, sell it or donate it — at least one item each day. I now keep two donation boxes in the garage for a local charity store. — Dez Crawford, Portland, Ore.

When I was a kid, I was considered hopeless in physical education . So, when a friend invited people to join a fitness challenge at the end of 2020, I decided that this was the time I would overcome my fear of failure.

We started by doing workouts via Zoom. I didn’t have weights, so I used soup cans instead. It was difficult. But, over time, I slowly grew stronger and more confident. My teacher replaced the soup cans with three-pound weights. My balance began to improve. I discovered that I was very flexible and could become strong. I joined a gym and actually look forward to working out. At 67, I replaced the “I can’t” attitude of my youth with “Yes, I can.” — Alice Gerard, Grand Island, N.Y.

In January 2023, I resolved to buy only secondhand clothes (except for basics like underwear) as my small attempt to help the planet. I love shopping, and I seriously thought that I would struggle with this. But here we are, almost a year later, and I haven’t bought anything new.

I have discovered a new world of secondhand shops and apps — and even the joys of shopping in my closet.

My teenage daughter made the same resolution, and we’ve spent lots of great days coming home with amazing bargains. — Claudia Rosani, Milton Keynes, England

During the darkest period in my 60 years, I resolved to try every new thing offered to me. Some were duds, but each one taught me something or made the next new thing easier. Now, two years later, my life is vastly different. I accepted jobs overseas. I made deep new friendships outside my typical circle. I met a partner whom I plan to marry. I’m invigorated again. I would never have imagined these results. — Paul Murdoch, Jacksonville, Ore.

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

This essay on ‘Newspaper’ will give them ideas on how to organise their thoughts in a structured format to frame a good essay.

The newspaper is the most authentic and reliable source of information as it only prints the news after proper investigation. Newspapers are delivered to our doorstep early in the morning. We can read the news by having a cup of tea and get to know what is going on around the world. Newspapers are economical as we get information at a very low cost. They are easily available and are also printed in different languages. Thus, newspapers make it easier for people to read news in their native language.

Newspapers cover different columns, and each column is reserved for a particular topic. The employment column provides information related to jobs. This column is very useful for youth who are searching for suitable jobs. Similarly, there are other columns, such as the matrimonial column for finding the perfect match for marriages, a political column for news related to politics, a sports column for analysis and opinion on sports updates, etc. Other than this, there are editorials, readers, and critics’ reviews that provide a wide variety of information.

History of Newspapers in India

The first newspaper to be printed in India was called Gazette Bengal. It was published by an Englishman, James Augustus Hicky in 1780. This newspaper was followed by the publication of other newspapers like the Indian Gazette, Calcutta Gazette, Madras Gazette Courier and Bombay Herald in the coming years. After the first freedom struggle of 1857, the number of newspapers appearing in different languages of India continued to grow. At the time of this freedom struggle, media expansion in India was not large. However, after India became independent, the expansion of newspapers continued.

Importance of Newspaper

A newspaper is an important prerequisite for democracy. It helps in the proper functioning of government bodies by making citizens informed about government work. Newspapers act as powerful public opinion changes. In the absence of a newspaper, we cannot have a true picture of our surroundings. It makes us realise that we are living in a dynamic world of knowledge and learning. Daily reading of the newspaper will help improve English grammar and vocabulary, which is especially helpful for students. It also improves reading skills along with learning skills. Thus, it enhances our knowledge and broadens our vision.

Newspapers contain advertisements which are essential to run a paper. So, along with news, newspapers are also a medium of advertising. Advertisements related to goods, services and recruitment are broadcast. There are also missing, lost-found, and government-release ads. Though these advertisements are useful most of the time, sometimes they result in misleading people. Many big companies and firms also advertise through newspapers to enhance their brand value in the market.

Disadvantages of Newspaper

There are numerous advantages of the newspaper, but on the other side, there are some drawbacks too. Newspapers are a source of exchanging diverse views. So, they can mould the opinion of people in positive and negative ways. Biased articles can cause riots, hatred and disunity. Sometimes immoral advertisements and vulgar pictures printed in the newspaper can severely damage society’s moral values.

Deletion of the vulgar ads and controversial articles removes the above-mentioned demerits of the newspaper to a great extent. Thus, an active reader cannot be misled and deceived by journalism.

Nailing your university essays: The dos and don’ts

daily newspaper essay

Writing an essay is no easy task on its own. However, when it's paired with the weight of affecting your university applications abroad, things can get messy quickly.

As a student applying to multiple universities abroad, you might have to write over a hundred essays about a variety of things. Not only is this time-consuming, but it can also be immensely stressful. Luckily, being able to anticipate what's expected in your writing and avoiding key mistakes can reduce this significantly.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.

University applications involve writing on a plethora of prompts, all of which demand you to showcase a different aspect of yourself. One common type of essay for your university application is the personal statement essay, which aims to know more about who you are. What you write here depends on which country you're applying to.

US universities, for example, want you to talk about what the story is behind your application, and what your surroundings have been like. This allows them to judge how you are as a person, and determine if you would bode well with their culture. Simply reiterating your resume in your essay is not a good idea when applying to universities in the US.

Writing personal statements for UK universities, on the other hand, does not involve as much soul-searching as US ones do.

"The UK universities want one personal statement where you give them a brief overview of all the things you've done in your life, and why you want to study in your chosen field or major," says Nuren Alahee, currently studying at the University of New South Wales. "Once you do that, you just send that through to different universities with your transcripts and grades, and call it a day."

The case is also similar with Australian universities. These universities require a statement of purpose, which mainly covers your academic and extracurricular journey, your reason for choosing the university you applied to, and why you want to enrol in the programme you applied to.

These are the key differences between the essay content of universities in different countries, and knowing them can reduce your troubles tenfold.

Then comes the need to not overcomplicate your essay.

Anxiety can often play a big role in our decisions during this turbulent time of our lives. Essays, in particular, garner a lot of concern and worry, and we end up overthinking the quality and content of the essay. In such circumstances, try to keep your work original while providing an accurate depiction of yourself.

"When I was writing my first university essay, I was really concerned about whether the admissions officers would like it," says Samiur Rahman*, an undergraduate student at the University of Texas, Arlington. "I ended up asking a lot of my teachers and peers to proofread it. I then rewrote the essay six times with their suggestions in mind. What I ended up with was an essay that had no resemblance to my story, which was not what I wanted to show to the universities."

Nuren also has a similar stance.

"When applying, we're all trying to put our best foot forward, but universities can tell when you're trying to portray yourself as someone that you're not," she adds.

English proficiency can also play a big part in our worries. Worrying whether or not your work is linguistically sound can bring a lot of hassle when writing. Luckily, schools do consider this when reviewing your essay. It's important to understand that an easy-to-read, digestible piece of writing will be much more impactful than an essay filled with hard words. If grammar and spelling errors are an issue, tools like Grammarly are your go-to. Taking inspiration from the millions of sample essays floating around on the internet won't hurt either.

To conclude, making sure to stick to the prompt and ticking all your requirements can massively streamline your writing process. Whilst it's unavoidable to some extent, try not to worry too much about the tiniest of details. Time is of the essence, and knowing what to avoid can allow you to concentrate on other aspects of your application.

Now, here we go with Wednesday's news.

Claudine Gay resigns 'in the best interests of Harvard'

Harvard President Claudine Gay announced her resignation Tuesday following accusations of plagiarism in her academic work and a grilling by congressional lawmakers in early December over her response to antisemitism on her campus since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

Questions about whether Gay copied others' work first became public after the congressional hearing, when she and other elite university presidents were excoriated for their responses to questions about whether calling for the genocide of Jews would violate campus policies on bullying and harassment.

  • New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, who questioned Gay and other university leaders in Congress, called Gay's resignation "long overdue."
  • Harvard's board initially stood by Gay after her Congressional testimony . But more recent concerns of academic plagiarism lead to an investigation that found several "instances of inadequate citation."
  • Various civil rights groups and academics have lamented Gay's resignation, highlighting the racial implications of her departure that go beyond a single person or incident.

Who's on the Jeffrey Epstein list?

A number of boldfaced names have been linked to Jeffrey Epstein since federal agents arrested the hedge fund manager on sex trafficking charges in July 2019. Now, hundreds of sealed court filings about Epstein are expected to be released in the coming days or weeks — and are likely to include the names of prominent people. The sealed documents were part of a defamation lawsuit brought by one of Epstein's accusers, Virginia Giuffre. Epstein took his own life inside a jail cell in 2019. Read more

Death of top Hamas leader raises questions about targeted killings outside Israel

Saleh al-Arouri, a top Hamas leader and a linchpin between the group and terrorist affiliates in Iran and Hezbollah − a Lebanon-based Hamas ally − was killed in an Israeli strike in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh, according to Lebanon's state-run news agency and the Hezbollah-linked al-Mayadeen media outlet. The killing marks a potentially significant escalation of Israel’s war against Hamas and heightening the risk of a wider Middle East conflict. Arouri’s death raises questions about whether – and where – Israel can target and kill suspected leaders of Hamas in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attacks. Netanyahu and other Israel leaders say it is their right to do so, while others disagree, citing international laws regarding sovereignty and the rule of law. Read more .

Donald Trump sues after he was disqualified from Maine ballot

Former President Donald Trump sued Maine's secretary of state Tuesday for disqualifying him from the state's primary ballot because of his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, opening another legal front in the saga over whether voters in some states will be barred from selecting the Republican frontrunner. Election officials and courts in several states are considering whether Trump's actions on Jan. 6 disqualified him under a Reconstruction-era provision of the 14th Amendment known as the insurrection clause. Only two states − Maine and Colorado − have so far decided that Trump should be removed from this year's primary ballots. Read more

Japan racing to find survivors after 'catastrophic' earthquake

Rescue efforts continued Wednesday to get out those trapped beneath collapsed buildings after a series of powerful earthquakes hit western Japan, leaving at least 62 people dead. Officials are warning people in some areas to stay away from their homes because of a risk of more strong quakes. Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas two days after a magnitude 7.6 temblor slammed the area on Monday. Meanwhile, investigators continue to look into why a Japan Airlines flight collided Tuesday with a Japanese Coast Guard plane that was going to deliver relief aid. Local news | ai in admissions: cu boulder study creates tool to read college essays.

Author

A new AI tool can read college essays — and it has the potential to change the way admissions is run at colleges and universities nationwide.

University of Colorado Boulder researchers developed AI tools that can read college admissions essays and identify the presence of certain character traits without showing bias toward applicants from certain race, gender or socioeconomic backgrounds.

“It doesn’t look for words,” Sidney D’Mello, CU Boulder professor and the study co-author, said. “It looks for words in context. It’s really looking for meaning. That’s the key thing.”

The tools, while not yet being used at any higher education institution, have the potential to assist admissions officers. It could check officers’ biases and improve efficiency, making sure no applicant is forgotten.

“There’s so much more to a person than what they write in an essay,” D’Mello said, adding, “I really think these tools can help surface aspirational, deserving, amazing students who may otherwise get overlooked.”

Some universities are starting to consider how AI might play a role in admissions. At CU Boulder, spokesperson Nicole Mueksch said the university “is still very much in an exploratory and fact-finding phase in regard to how AI could be incorporated into the admissions process.” Because of this, CU Boulder isn’t in a position to discuss it at this time.

To conduct the study, the team of researchers partnered with Common App to assemble a data set of 300,000 students who applied to college in 2008 and 2009. They took a random sample of essays which were then read by humans and rated for the presence or absence of seven personal qualities including leadership, mindset and teamwork. Then, researchers created an AI model that would be able to replicate the human ratings of the essays.

The study found that the AI-generated ratings of the essays matched the humans’ scores well. The AI model was also able to accurately predict whether a student graduated, based on the presence or lack of desired character traits identified in the essay.

“We found we could replicate the human ratings pretty accurately and that these ratings were then predictive of college graduation,” Benjamin Lira, a doctoral student at the University of Pennsylvania and the study’s first author, said.

The AI tool can sift through large volumes of data with humans making the data and guiding decisions, a key component throughout the study. The tool does not replace admissions officers, D’Mello said. Rather, it offers them more support. There’s often not enough time for people to read all essays deeply and they often don’t agree on their merits.

Additionally, the new Supreme Court rulings against affirmative action mean there’s more emphasis placed on college essays, D’Mello said. Maybe an applicant can’t produce a beautifully written essay with an admissions consultant, but they can express a lived experience in a deeply passionate way. The AI tool can judge both essays for the same character traits, without giving an advantage to the student with the perfectly written essay.

Lira said these types of AI tools could allow admissions officers to be less affected by bias and be more efficient.

“There’s a bunch of research showing that humans can be unreliable,” Lira said. “So, I think we would suggest that having a model alongside you could help you catch things that maybe you would miss.”

Lira said ethical concerns surrounding AI are warranted, and there are a number of examples where the deployment of AI has been harmful. AI is not inherently good or evil, Lira said, it’s simply math that reproduces what it gets from the data and its programming. If it’s harmful, he said, it’s due to biased data.

As long as it’s done carefully and constantly audited for fairness, it can be a beneficial tool in admissions. Lira said it’s unclear when and how colleges might begin to incorporate these types of tools.

“We’re hoping our findings can speak to ways we can try to use AI for admissions in particular but any kind of decision-making in general in a way that’s aligned to what we want to achieve as a society,” Lira said.

Before the tools can be used, D’Mello said, researchers need to do additional work to collect more data sets and make sure the AI tools are robust, accurate and transparent.

“There’s much more work to be done and we think it’s important to go slow rather than release these things into the wild,” D’Mello said.
