Criminology and Criminal Justice Studies

Criminology is the sociology-based study of crime and the criminal justice system. Through the criminology and criminal justice studies major, students learn about the dimensions of the crime problem, explanations of the prevalence of various types of crime, and the various agencies and programs designed to prevent and control crime and delinquency. These agencies and programs include the police, courts, probation and parole systems, and correctional institutions. Attention also is given to such issues as youth and crime, women and crime, and the place of control agencies in the larger societal context.

As a social science/liberal arts field, criminology provides majors with a variety of techniques for examining and responding to important questions about the causes and consequences of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system.

Get started

Upon admission to the university, students can declare a major in criminology and criminal justice studies.

As a prerequisite to declaring a major in criminology and criminal justice studies, all students should complete Sociology 1101: Introduction to Sociology. This three-hour course may be taken concurrently with other lower-level criminology (and sociology) courses. 

Criminology majors must complete the following core requirements:

• Sociology 3410: Criminology
• Sociology 3487: Research Methods in Sociology
• Sociology 3488: Introduction to Sociological Theory
• Sociology 3549: Statistics in Sociology

Criminology majors must complete a minimum of 24 additional credit hours of course work in criminology and sociology, including a minimum of 12 hours of 4000- or 5000-level criminology courses. Students are also required to complete either a research, education abroad, service-learning or internship experience. Students should consult with a sociology and criminology undergraduate advisor to develop a plan of study that is appropriate for meeting their academic and career interests and goals.

Study abroad

Students are encouraged to participate in one of the Department of Sociology's two education abroad programs, Genocide and its Aftermath in Rwanda and the Warsaw Summer School in Social Sciences. The department's faculty are also currently developing additional education abroad programs for the future.

The Department of Sociology has a strong internship program for its undergraduate majors in criminology. Students may augment their course work with career-related internship and volunteer experiences. Students may participate in community-based experiences at settings such as the Columbus City Prosecutor’s Office, Columbus Division of Police, and the Office of the Inspector General. Students can receive credit for their internship experience.

Honors and Scholars

Honors students who pursue a major in criminology and criminal justice studies have the opportunity to enroll in Honors-specific courses, conduct research with faculty, attend departmental forums and engage in intellectual discussions as a member of our Honors community. The following courses have Honors sections:

• Sociology H1101: Introduction to Sociology
• Sociology H3410: Criminology
• Sociology H3463: Social Stratification: Race, Class and Gender
• Sociology H3487: Research Methods in Sociology

Honors students are exposed to research in several ways. Most courses at the 4000 level and above require students to read and critique research articles. Relationships developed in class lead many students to become involved in faculty-led research projects or conduct their own independent research (senior Honors thesis) under the supervision of a faculty advisor.

Current undergraduate research assistants are working on faculty-led research projects such as such as Police Use of Deadly Force, Drug Trade on the Dark Net and Marijuana Criminalization in the United States. 

Student organizations

Criminology and criminal justice studies students can join the national Alpha Kappa Delta sociology honorary society, which hosts annual recognition events and is a forum for intellectual exchange.

Students can also participate in Sociology and Criminology Club to do service work, attend speaking events, explore careers and participate in a variety of social activities.

Possible careers

An undergraduate major in criminology and criminal justice studies provides an excellent liberal arts foundation, and graduates are able to apply their skills and knowledge across a wide variety of occupations and professions and for graduate or professional education. Some graduates enter directly into the labor force in law enforcement, delinquency prevention and control services, crime prevention, corrections, probation or parole, criminal justice administration, and research. Like other social science majors, undergraduate criminology majors also are employed in non-crime-related sectors: health and social services (in substance abuse and rehabilitation counseling); community work (in child welfare agencies); and federal, state and local government (in urban planning and housing). 

The criminology major provides a foundation for postbaccalaureate work in law, public policy, social work, business, theology and urban planning. Many students also will use the undergraduate major as preparation for graduate work in criminology or in a related field, such as sociology. Graduate degrees lead to teaching and/or research positions in universities or colleges, governmental agencies, business and industrial firms, research institutes in the nonprofit sector, or self-employment and consulting.

• develop comprehensive knowledge of the criminology and criminal justice studies discipline;
• understand criminological and sociological theories and concepts;
• apply research methods and statistical analysis to questions about the causes and consequences of crime and the workings of the criminal justice system;
• prepare for employment or graduate school through a series of academic and experiential learning opportunities.

As a criminal justice major, you’ll take challenging courses in corrections, policing, the courts and juvenile justice as well as courses in related fields like psychology, sociology, political science, statistics and research methods. Many of these courses include strong research and writing components. You’ll also build teamwork, communication, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills with hands-on experience in the field. 

Large institutions just can't provide the individualized attention and opportunity you'll find here. Our criminal justice majors can take a wide array of specialized courses including homeland security, intelligence analysis, human trafficking, true crime, serial murder, and criminal behavior. They mentor juvenile offenders and intern with local and national law enforcement agencies. They work with national datasets, conduct research with faculty members in a research lab, present research at regional and national conferences, and lead student organizations.

Intro to Law Enforcement (CJUS 102) - Overview of policing problems and procedures; legal and philosophical issues in law enforcement; organization and administration of police agencies.

Criminology (CJUS 206) - This course explores the cause of crime and deviance from varying theoretical perspectives in the social sciences. As an introductory survey of the classical and positivist schools of criminology, theories covered include human ecology, Social structural approaches, Social process (learning) theories, socio-biological theories, developmental theories and control theories.

Basic Const Law and Amer Justice (CJUS 210) - Studies the ratification and incorporation of the Bill of Rights. Methods of Research in CJUS (CJUS 381) - This course is designed to acquaint students with basic research methodology that is useful in understanding criminological and criminal justice scholarship. Criminal Justice

Serve and protect your community through careers in corrections, law enforcement and the court system. The Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) program is designed for students who have already completed an applied associate degree in a related area such as law enforcement, human services technology, corrections technology, or police administration.

Since a bachelor's degree is rapidly becoming a minimum requirement for employment in this field, your chances for employment and advancement are strengthened greatly by this program. Over 80% of our BCJ students are non-traditional students employed full-time in the criminal justice field.

The multidisciplinary curriculum comprises a broad range of courses from the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and professional disciplines, all of which make a contribution to the complex field of Criminal Justice. Potential Careers

The Criminal Justice program offers students with technical education background the opportunity to broaden their exposure to a liberal arts curriculum while training for careers fields like parole and probation, adult and juvenile corrections, and police administration. Criminal justice students might also prepare for law school or for further study in graduate or professional schools.

• The median annual wage  for police and detectives nationally in May 2021 was $66,020 with 3% growth in employment demand from 2021-31.
• The median annual wage  for Forensic Science Technicians in Ohio in May 2022 was $63,740 with 11% growth in employment demand from 2021-2031.

Learning Environment

The BCJ major is available on all campuses and online through  OHIO Online . Nearly all BCJ majors will be required to complete online coursework. The program is intentionally designed to be completed in two years. Contact your  transfer advisor  to see if your college has an articulation agreement with our BCJ program.

Program Admission Requirements

First-year students.

Completion of an applied associate degree in a related technical field (criminal justice, paralegal, human services, law enforcement, corrections, police science, police administration, security/safety, forensic studies) is required for you to qualify for admission to the BCJ program. If you have not earned an applied associate degree, you may first enroll in and complete the Law Enforcement Technology applied associate degree program at Ohio University.

Transfer and Current OHIO Students

To internally transfer into the criminal justice program, you must:

• Achieve a 2.0 cumulative GPA.
• Earn an applied associate degree in a criminal justice related technical field. The degree completion must be posted on a student’s DARS report for admission to the BCJ.  
• Declare the BCJ major via the Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree Program Application Form. The application form is available from any regional campus student services office. You may also fill out the  application online .

To internally transfer into the criminal justice  pre-major  program, you must:

• Be enrolled in an applied associate degree program in a criminal justice related technical field. OHIO’s Law Enforcement Technology (LET) program is recommended if you are not enrolled in another criminal justice related associate program.  Declare the LET program major code (code: AA5505) by completing this form. An applied associate degree in a criminal justice related technology must be earned prior to admission to the BCJ program.
• Declare the pre-BCJ major via the  Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree Program Application Form . 

Students may complete this application to declare the pre-BCJ or BCJ major at any time.

You should know there are two types of bachelor’s degrees: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal Justice . 

A B.S. tends to be more specialized and focuses on criminal justice's technical and practical aspects, diving into more scientific content, data analytics, forensics, or other technical areas in the field. It's perfect if you're aspiring for a job in law enforcement, forensic analysis, or any position where knowing criminal justice science is key. 

A B.A., on the other hand, is suitable for students interested in broader liberal arts education, covering a mix of topics like psychology, sociology, and humanities. This way, you get a fuller picture of the social and cultural sides of the criminal system. The doctorate is the highest-level of degree in criminal justice and takes around 3-5 years post-master’s, on average. This path is best for those passionate about research, teaching, and leading at the highest levels, and aiming to become a leader in the academic community, a consultant, or even an executive in criminal justice organizations.

The admission requirements for criminal justice programs can change based on the type of program you’re interested in. Let’s take a closer look at the general eligibility criteria for each.

To get started with your application to an undergraduate program, you'll need to meet a few admission requirements. Keep in mind they can vary by school. That said, there are some universal elements to look out for to get yourself ready for your studies. Here's a rundown to help you sort everything out: 

Complete the Admission Application: This is your first step. Make sure to fill out the institution’s application form thoroughly, as it's your initial introduction to the admissions committee. 

Submit Your Official High School Transcript(s): You'll need to have your high school send your transcript(s) directly to the institution. These documents should include important details like your diploma type, class rank, and GPA (Grade Point Averages). It's crucial because it gives the admissions team a comprehensive look at your academic history and achievements. 

Provide Your Official Test Scores: Next up, you'll need to submit your standardized test scores. This includes any combination of SAT, ACT, GED, and TAKS scores. These scores offer a standardized measure of your academic capabilities and readiness for college-level work. Make sure these are sent directly from the testing agency or are included in your official high school transcript. 

Just a heads up: there are often some extra requirements for applicants from abroad or the military. Make sure to look them over before you send in your application.

As we said before, the institution's guidelines might change, but we’ll provide you with a broad picture of what's typically needed for a grad school application. 

When applying for graduate studies, you usually need to have a B.A. or B.S. in criminal justice, criminology, or something similar from an accredited school. Additionally, your GPA should be at least 3.0 for your last 60 hours of upper-level undergrad classes. Don't forget to include a professional resume too, especially if you've got any relevant internships or work experience on your track record. 

Besides that, institutions often require a 3–4-page Statement of Purpose where you detail your background and what you want to achieve with your degree. This essential requirement demonstrates your academic history, interests and objectives to the admissions committee. Therefore, dedicate enough time to write it, explaining in detail why you are interested in pursuing graduate studies, what led you to this decision and how your past experiences have prepared you for it. 

Finally, you’ll need two letters from professionals or academics who can attest to your potential for success in graduate studies. If you are a non-native English speaker, a language proficiency certificate could also be requested.

Now that you know the types of criminal justice degrees and what you need for the admission, let’s look at the degree requirements: 

Usually, you must complete a minimum of 120 semester hours to get your bachelor’s degree, including at least 39 hours at the advanced level. 

For example, at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), the advanced-level courses in the B.A. in Criminal Justice program dive deep into specialized topics, research methods and contemporary issues within the field, getting you ready for professional careers or further academic study. These courses cover a wide range of subjects, from Applied Research Methods in Criminal Justice to Cyber Crime. 

You’ll also need to fulfill general education, block electives, foreign language core requirements, and minor or additional electives. 

To deepen your understanding of societal and behavioral factors influencing criminal justice, at UTEP we encourage students to take courses in Sociology and Psychology as well.

For master's degree programs, you are required to complete 36 credit hours. In some cases, such as at UTEP, you have the option to choose between two tracks: a professional/non-thesis track or a thesis track. 

In the first option, the curriculum includes 9 credits of courses focused on the practical aspects of criminal justice, such as organization and management, program evaluation, and evidence-based practices, culminating in a capstone project. Additionally, you must complete 18 credits of electives, 9 of which must be specifically designated to criminal justice topics. 

Alternatively, the thesis track requires students to engage more deeply with research, requiring 12 credits in track-specific courses and a smaller portion of electives, totaling 15 credits, with the same stipulation for criminal justice-specific courses.

And What About Math?

At this point, you’re probably asking what kind of math you need for criminal justice. 

Typically, for a criminal justice degree, you'll take math courses applied to social sciences. This approach helps you build a critical foundation to develop necessary quantitative skills. 

These math classes encompass college algebra and geometry, as well as key concepts such as set algebra, diverse types of functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic), matrix algebra and addressing systems of equations and inequalities. They also provide a basis in probability and finance-related mathematics.

The University of Cincinnati’s Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program is designed to provide students with an understanding of criminal offending and the criminal justice process. Our bachelor’s program allows students to explore the criminal law system as it relates to crime prevention, child behavioral problems, adolescent delinquency, and information technology. Our students are encouraged to complete a minor, certificate or focus area in a subject matter of their choice that will complement their career goals.

Students pursuing a degree in criminal justice have a wide variety of academic interests and talents. Many students select courses that will enhance a specific area, as well as courses they enjoy. Many of our students want to combine their interest in anthropology, literature, psychology, sociology and women’s studies. However, students who choose extensive courses in accounting, biology, business, chemistry or a foreign language seem to have greater career/job opportunities. All students pursuing an undergraduate degree in criminal justice must complete field placement. The field placement allows seniors to expand upon their education by gaining practical field experience. This unpaid internship is in a criminal-justice related agency of the student’s choice. Many students are successful in obtaining full-time positions after graduation, due to experience from their field placement.

There is a 4.31% increase in demand in employment for the criminal justice field over the next 10 years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). Through both classroom and field placement, students are prepared for responsible positions of service in law enforcement, the courts, corrections, criminal justice administration, crime prevention, the business sector, research, youth services agencies and other related career agencies. For individuals already employed in the field, the degree is a good vehicle for career advancement. Graduates of this major pursue many different careers. A few examples are:

Deciding to major in criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati provides students countless opportunities. Students are allowed to choose various courses across the university in many disciplines for a richer collegiate experience. Many students find that studying abroad or doing an internship still allows them to graduate in four years. The UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services is committed in every way to student success. Each year, the college has a scholarship application process encouraging students to apply. In past years, the college has been able to award scholarships to many students. Alpha Phi Sigma Alpha Phi Sigma is the only National Criminal Justice Honor Society (Fraternity) for criminal  justice majors. We recognize academic excellence of undergraduate and graduate students of criminal justice, as well as juris doctorate.

Criminal Justice Society The Criminal Justice Society is a student-sponsored organization designed to enhance the educational experience of those interested in criminal justice and criminal behavior. Criminal Justice Society promotes the study of crime and justice and sponsors activities for interested students. Activities include prison tours, speaker events and an annual career fair. CECH Tribunal The purposes of the CECH Tribunal are to ensure that the interests of the students of the college are voiced and to provide student representation on behalf of all undergraduate students in CECH where representation is warranted. Also, the tribunal organizes programs and social events for students of the college. Student Ambassador Program The Student Ambassador program represents CECH at the University of Cincinnati by assisting with the recruitment and retention of students in the college. CECH Student Ambassadors provide a valuable service by representing the student perspective of university life to prospective and new students. Ambassadors also represent the college at numerous collegiate functions, professional events and key promotional events. Being selected as a CECH student ambassador is an honor that reflects academic rigor and a commitment to the fields of education, health promotion and education and criminal justice.

In order to graduate from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, a student must:

• Complete all required course work and program requirements.
• Obtain at least a 2.0 university grade point average.
• Be in good academic standing; that is, not on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension.
• Meet the college's residency requirement of 30 semester credit hours.
• File formal application for the degree by the posted semester of graduation deadline.

Admission to this program is generally available for students transferring to the University of Cincinnati if they were admissible directly from high school and have a 2.0 cumulative GPA (all prior institutions combined).

Students who were NOT admissible directly from high school must have:

• 24 semester (36 quarter) hours earned
• at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA (all prior institutions combined)

Admission to this program is generally available for University of Cincinnati students enrolled in other colleges of the University of Cincinnati if they were admissible directly from high school and have a 2.0 cumulative GPA (UC and any prior institutions combined).
