About this course

Things you might need for this course, about the provider.

De La Salle University (DLSU) is a private research university in the Philippines and was established in 1911. It started as an elementary and high school institution for boys up until 1920, when the school began offering an Associate Course in Commerce, but still only accepting male students in the program. The university replaced the associate program with Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1931. It has since expanded with additional colleges under its belt. In 1973, DLSU opened its doors, allowing women to attend the university. From its first campus in Paco, Manila, De La Salle University now has 16 schools across different regions in the country.

At present, De La Salle University has 8 colleges with 36 academic departments and 11 research centers. DLSU’s tradition of excellence has been recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) with the grant of Centers for Excellence and a number of Center of Development awards. Moreover, the institution received a Level IV status from the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) which is the highest accreditation given to a university that exhibits excellence in all operational aspects.

Throughout the years, De La Salle University has provided its students with outstanding academic training. In retrospect, many of DLSU’s students have excelled in the fields of business, politics, arts, science, and sports, consequently making significant impact in the society. During its 100th year last 2011, DLSU celebrated academic excellence with its students garnering a high passing rate in licensure board exams and pioneering innovations in technology.

Spring ’24 creative writing open house, april 3, 2024.

’24 CW Open House Panel

On March 25 th , several Duke English faculty and more than 20 undergraduates met to discuss “Sex, Money, Death (and PIZZA): Why you should be a Creative Writing Minor.”

Each semester, the Duke English Department hosts an Open House for students to learn about the craft of creative writing from faculty members whose areas of expertise include poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Faculty share their writing experiences, what attracted them to a particular genre, how they approach writing, what courses they teach, and a sense of their teaching styles.

The theme for the Spring ’24 Creative Writing Open House is a play on the saying that every book has either sex, money, or death as a subject matter.  Pizza was added as an extra incentive and a pre-dinner snack.  To begin this event, each panelist introduced themself and spoke about the creative writing courses they will teach next semester. Then, each one read a work that related to either sex, money, or death.

Panelists asked questions about what students want to learn. Professor Amin Ahmad asked why they take creative writing classes.

"I'm not pursuing a major related to writing, but I've always been amazed by what writing can do, whether creating mental images, producing emotional responses, or conveying ideas profoundly and thoroughly. Put simply, I believe that writing can often be the best way to express what it's like to experience something. So, while I wouldn't consider myself to be a writer, at least not right now, I do try to find ways to be as close to that world as possible and to put myself in situations where I can learn from those who have extensive experience with and deep knowledge of the craft. – Zane Harrison, '24 , Computer Science and English minor

Professor JP Gritton asked what Creative Writing courses students would like added to ensure that Duke English provides classes that meet their needs and interests. Professor Akhil Sharma encouraged students to visit professors during their office hours, especially if that professor is knowledgeable in an area that they are curious about or if they want to simply chat with them outside the classroom setting. He invited students to stop for a visit even if they are not currently taking a class with that faculty member.

Some of the poets on the panel shared how their love for poetry originated from an interest in another genre, and fiction writers expressed how they often envy those who have perfected the art of poetry. This discussion touched on how a person’s literary genre preference can transcend as one learns more about what they like and finds their niche. As Professor Ahmad noted, a short story may be the warm-up for a forthcoming novel.

Faculty provided a range of writing advice. Professor Joe Donahue suggested that students consider what their writing is saying beyond the words they select for the page. Professor Toby Martinez de las Rivas, Visiting Blackburn Artist in Residence, spoke about opportunities to work on a genre, collection, or a piece beyond the traditional classroom opportunity, whether it is the focus of an Independent Studies course or simply asking for a professor's assistance on a piece that they are passionate about. Professor Donahue added that students can also consider an honors project centered around a piece or collection of writing that they would like to craft into something greater than an assignment.

The panel discussed their experiences with Master in Fine Art (MFA) programs and other professional development they have participated in during their creative writing careers. They encouraged students interested in creative writing to take advantage of Duke English courses, faculty office hours, and opportunities to write and connect with good writing. They hammered home the importance of surrounding oneself with other good writers to continuously improve their craft.

Requirements & Courses

In addition to the g eneral requirements in literature, as creative writers you take a minimum of 9 credit hours in 400- and 500-level creative writing workshops in at least two genres:

  • Creative Non-Fiction

It is recommended that both M.A. and Ph.D. students have a formal reading of their creative work before the academic community prior to graduation and make substantial attempts to publish their original work.

You may take your comprehensive exams beginning in the semester after you complete your coursework and foreign language requirements. Following exam specifications required of your concentration, students select four areas for examination, one primary area and three secondary areas. You may opt to take two additional courses to replace one minor exam. Talk to your advisor for more information.

Dissertation

You will complete a creative dissertation which consists of a book-length creative work and a theoretical introduction to that work. The introduction is a scholarly work which engages issues, ideas, and/or craft elements found within the rest of the dissertation. While you are welcome to stick to a single genre for the creative part of the dissertation, multi-genre work is welcome.

Research & artistry, alumni & giving, a college of liberal arts department, creative writing, fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, creative writing concentration, be creative.

The Creative Writing concentration gives students the opportunity to strengthen their creative writing skills and infuses their analytic reading skills with imagination. Students take beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in one or more of the following genres: fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction.

Intermediate and advanced courses are primarily workshop classes in which students read and critique one another’s work. At the center of all creative writing courses is the study of craft.

Students in the Creative Writing concentration also take a wide variety of English and literature courses that prepare them to be writers by instructing them in literary traditions and styles. An internship program for all English majors offers Creative Writing students positions that may lead to employment. In addition, the Creative Writing program runs a vibrant reading series that gives students the chance to meet visiting writers.

To find out what classes you take in this concentration, take a look at the Creative Writing Advising Checksheet:

What Are Students Saying?

“I felt comfortable connecting with professors on a personal level which allowed me to feel comfortable when stretching my creative boundaries – because I did not fear being criticized or discouraged by professors. Their overall focus wasn’t to teach us one way of learning or one school of thought but to expand our horizons and allow us to discover the terrain on our own.” ~ Teal Vickrey, BA English: Creative Writing
“When I took my first creative writing class in the department, I knew it was my home. My favorite part of the English program was my professors. They were an amazing group of people and I wouldn’t be the same without their support, encouragement and critique.” ~Whitney Pratz, BA English with concentration in Creative Writing and an MFA: Creative Writing

Whitney Pratz

“I initially started out as a Business Major, but it was only in my English classes that I felt completely and wholly stimulated by everything I was engaged with. I think you have to devote yourself to that feeling when you are lucky enough to find it.” ~Justin Goodfellow, BA English: Creative Writing

Creative writing cultivates habits that will serve the student in all walks of life: an understanding of the complexities and mysteries of the human experience as expressed through the written word, a nuanced ear for the music inherent in a composition, and a discerning eye for the significant details that are essential to good writing. Immersion in any or all of the major genres works toward compositions that are luminous and lyrical. Within a supportive and discriminating workshop composed of fellow writers, students explore, experiment with and share techniques that provide new insights into their lives and literary traditions. Creative Writing students learn to closely read, critique, revise, and craft a deeply-felt experience that resonates with readers and enriches the traditions of human knowledge.
